Chairman’s Report Just a few lines to tell you that I am up but not running yet.

I apologise for not being able to be at the AGM but had no choice, I understand recovery will take some time. I can tell you it has taken away my sense of humour, but I am looking forward to a few laughs at our Wednesday mornings smokos.

Thank you Trevor for chairing the AGM and Rob for chairing our first branch meeting for the year. Also I would like to thank those of you who have made yourselves available for the various positions to help make our branch run smoothly.

We are getting a visit from a Government Minister on the 5th October so we will make sure a few things are in place and we will not embarrass ourselves, we will show them how it’s done.

Have to go I’m running out of fuel.

Club Captain’s Report The Whatamango Bay trip was cancelled due to the weather and after a ring around we decided to follow the steam train to Seddon where we supported the local market and eateries.

The noggin and natter was cancelled for May and night trial postponed this will be held now in June.

The AGM was well attended and despite several key members unavailable, Trevor Harris and Don Laing were able to get through the business in hand quickly and everyone enjoyed a plentiful cuppa afterwards.

John Russell has become a new Committee member and Catherine Millar elected as Club Captain following Jim McLean's resignation. Thanks to Jim for some great trips during his reign.

On the lighter side…..

SENIOR DRIVERS NO LONGER NEED A LICENCE! My neighbour was working in his yard when he was startled by a late-model car that came crashing through his hedge and ended up on his front lawn.

He rushed to help an elderly lady driver out of the car and sat her down on a lawn chair. He said to her, "You appear quite elderly to be driving."

"Well, yes, I am," she replied proudly. "I'll be 97 next month, and I am now old enough that I don't even need a driver's licence anymore."

He asked "What do you mean?"

"Well the last time I went to my doctor, he examined me and asked if I had a driver's licence. I told him 'yes' and handed it to him."

He took scissors out of the drawer, cut the licence into pieces, and threw them in the waste basket, saying, 'You won't need this anymore.'

"So I thanked him and left! "

Secretary’s Scribblings First of all, I would like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone from the Branch who have called, sent flowers, emailed and sent cards since the untimely passing of Sharon on the 23 rd May. You will probably know that Sharon had a very aggressive cancer of the bile duct and unfortunately there was nothing the medical profession could do for her.

I would also like to thank Kevin and Cath, Alan and Jan, and Rob for providing Model A’s for her funeral, and to Kevin for taking her on her last ride in a Model A after her service.

I was unable to attend the Branch AGM on 30 th May, but I believe there was a very good turnout of members.

So; Welcome to Cath Millar as Club Captain and John Russell to the Committee.

Thanks to Jim Mclean for your duties as Club Captain over the past 2 years.

Also, Congratulations to John Armiger and David Bruce on presentation of your 60-year certificates.

From our Committee meeting on 2 nd June: Kelly was unable to be with us as he has been undergoing treatment in Christchurch, so lets all wish Kelly a speedy recovery.

The wicker side chair on the Ace motorcycle in the museum is in very bad repair, with borer infestations over time doing the main damage. Ron Hebberd has offered to take on the project to refurbish this so thanks to him for this.

Trevor said some of the motorcycle members were concerned that many of the pre-war bikes don’t get an airing these days, so the group is looking at having an extra monthly run for these bikes.

The Branch needs to appoint a second representative on the Brayshaw Heritage Park Committee so if anyone is interested, please let Don Laing or Kelly know. Don is secretary for this group.

There is a review of the Incorporated Societies Act through Central Government being conducted at the moment. One of the clauses talks about a Societies Assets if the Society ever closes. The Branch has decided we need to consult with a lawyer to look at the implications of this. We as a Branch of the VCC need to be able to keep our collection in Marlborough in the unforeseen and (we think) unlikelihood of our branch ever closing.

Now that the She Oak trees have been removed, the replanting of this area will be in consultation with the District Council Parks and Reserves people. The Council have agreed to pay for part of the cost of removing these trees.

Concern was expressed at the meeting about the difficulty some members are

having at getting WOFs for their old vehicles. Some inspectors are interpreting rules for older vehicles as though they have just been put on the road now, rather than gong back to rules in place when these vehicles were first on the road. Clarification of these rules are being sought from the National VCC body.

Also, for those members who are restoring vehicles with the old black and silver plates, the Clubs website information on this is quite confusing so an update to this is being requested.

The committee have made appointments to the Branch which appear in the back of the Vintage Viewpoint. Please read these and see the changes.

Viewpoint that all members should have a Name Badge and wear them at all events. For those who don’t have a badge, I can order them from Badges and Medals. Cost $15.

COMMUNITY BUS PROPOSAL Consideration is being given to organise a community bus with wheel chair facilities to enable members who do not have a drivers licence or are mobility challenged to enable them to join the VCC Wednesday morning smokos.

There may be a small charge and initially it would only be monthly.

To ascertain if is worth proceeding with this proposal it would be appreciated if interested parties could contact Don Laing advising names & contact details.

Patchett Green Trees - Trevor Harris There are times when our Branch Committee takes time, sometimes more than one meeting, to make a difficult decision. Over recent months a lot of debate has taken place about removing two of the trees on Patchett's Green. The roots of the trees in question have moved the brick post on the lower Patchett Green gate to the extent the gate is now hard to get open.

The debate extended to include removal of all the trees around the Green perimeter. It has been known for some time the trees were prone to dropping large branches & there was concern sooner or later damage could occur to a members vehicle parked under the trees or worse badly injure a member.

Another negative aspect of the trees is the needles they drop in large quantities.

The needles contain turpentine which destroys the fertility of the soil beneath the trees. The rhododendrons planted some time ago to beautify the area have struggled & some have had to be relocated.

Our Farm Machinery neighbors’ also have concerns with the branches & needles especially the needles which accumulate on the roof of the Denton building verandah. Eventually it was resolved the two trees causing the problem with the gate would be removed. Costs were obtained & the trees were removed.

The removal quickly ended the debate about the rest of the trees. Both of the trees were dead in the middle as were some of the larger limbs. The Council officer responsible for the Park was consulted & he inspected & took photos ’ of the dead wood & gave approval that the rest of the trees should be removed.

No one likes to see mature trees removed but the safety of our members, their vehicles & the public is paramount. Once everything is cleaned up more suitable trees & shrubs will be planted.

As a matter of interest, the existing trees were planted by members at a working bee forty six years ago. Some of those members are still active enough to help plant the next lot or at least lean on their walking sticks and give advice.

From the Blokes in the Shed…

The Clubs AGM has come and gone with no contentious issues debated which indicates the Club in in good heart and well managed.

The electrical shed is also a well managed unit and with the increased floor space, stock is well laid out for ease of access. The team in the electrical shed offer an efficient service to members, thank you guys.

John R is attending to some overdue maintenance on the forklifts hydraulics and the front tyres are also due to be replaced. Roger L is one parts assistant who deserves some accolades, he quietly works away on any task on hand, no matter how heavy or dirty it just gets done without any fuss.

Lawrence and Roger M have made much progress on the container shelving and stock will soon be transferred. Incoming inventory has arrived from a Taparewa donor and Friday 4th we will be picking up a 1929 six cylinder Chevrolet sedan. This is a mostly complete car (maybe some smaller items to find) and has been in dry storage for many decades. It will require a full restoration but a great start for an enthusiastic member. Many thanks to Geoff for his more than generous donation.

Update from Your Kitchen

Six months of the year has passed by and gosh it has gone quickly and there is not a lot happening in the kitchen.

Although the weather hasn't been very nice the Wednesday morning teas are still proving popular and if any one would like to join the ladies on a Wednesday morning to either help with scone making, pouring tea or just to have a chat we would love to see you.

We had one function catered for in May. A reminder our ‘Daffodil Day’ is creeping around (August) we again will be kindly asking for baking, more info in next months news letter.

Natter & Noggin this month is Friday June 25th and it is "Soup & Bun Night" As our Mid-winter dinner is going to be on the 25th July I have had to change our High Tea afternoon. A new date will be advised next month.

Motorcycle Report Sunday 16th May dawned cold and damp after overnight rain with more rain predicted, not the sort of day which encouraged young men, let alone VCC members of more mature age to get their motorcycles out for a ride to Seddon, however ten members fronted up. Admittedly five of them were in cars which shows our section members operate on different scales of enthusiasm for riding on wet slippery winding roads.

Once again one of our riders turned up on a new machine and once again it was a Honda. Paul has recently purchased a 1981 Honda C.B. 650. The second outing in a row Hondas were the predominate make on the outing.

At Seddon we were joined by Mindy on her BSA which increased the number of British machines on the run to two. How things have changed. Steve added more variety by arriving on his new 2020 V85TT Moto Guzzi. Amongst us there were some who were envious and some who sadly looked back to a time when we were young enough, fit enough and brave enough to ride a bike like that if anything remotely like it had been available. An interesting afternoon was spent in Ron’s motorcycle museum where we joined by some of our branch members who had taken cars to Seddon to participate in an event featuring a steam train excursion. Mid afternoon it started to rain and the last of group quickly headed for home.

On last years garage run one of our lady riders noticed a 1931 BSA L31 tucked away amongst several other motorcycles in one of the sheds, she broke the commandment that tells us we must not covet our neighbours’ possessions.

Over several months she revisited the shed and drooled over the BSA while plucking up the courage to tell her partner she had fallen in love with it.

Christmas morning, or was it New Year she got out of bed and headed for the kitchen to make a cuppa and guess what was parked in the lounge. The question remains, how the hell did Santa get a BSA down the chimney?

We extend our condolences to Glenn Herkt following the passing of his mother.

1929 AJS M6 350 purchased from Gordon Finlay in Blenheim 2015.

Bike came with a frame, forks front and back wheel and a side valve engine and fuel tank, the engine wasn’t matching numbers.

In 2017 I was at the Sturgess collection in Nelson looking at an AJS and started talking to another person Dave also looking at the same bike, I asked if he had one like it, the answer was yes he had inherited it from his father and had featured in a copy of beaded wheels only months earlier, anyway as you do I asked if he had any spares he would part with, my ears pricked up when he said he had a spare ohv engine a deal was done and engine picked up luckily very complete, a carburettor was also sourced from the same Dave at a later date.

Next a gearbox was found in a sorry state ,Les Freeman (who helped immensely with parts and advice) agreed to overhaul the gearbox for me. Les also supplied foot rests mag platform and rear stand.

At the Jampot rally in Masterton I was riding my 1929 AJS M8 500, I was approached by Peter from Masterton he said he also had an M8 not quite ready for the road ,as you do I asked if he had any 350 parts his reply was he had an oil tank, couldn't go right then but arranged to meet him after the rally run.

On the run had a lot of trouble with my gearbox anyway eventually got to Peters place to see a very nice oil tank for the M6 and also a 1929 AJS M9 which belonged to his brother in law which was also up for sale so both went into my van.

Coincidentally Les told me about this M9 a few years earlier when it was for sale in Nelson, but I was too slow and the machine was sold to the North Island , went through a couple of owners before I purchased it returning it to the mainland.

Rob Hey was contacted regarding machining new valves and machining piston and valve guides to suit.

A suitable mag was sourced and Tiger Lyons who shifted here a few years ago reconditioned this for me.

Rob suggested a friend of his to assemble the engine, it was my lucky day I was introduced to Graeme Mcclintock ,Graeme has helped me immensely also , very knowledgeable and can do all sorts with a lathe, mill and welder I envy him as I have no skill with these things.

New guards were sourced from vintage steel in Perth, very happy with the service and quality of them.

As the frame wasn't perfect I decided to powder coat this, the tank original tank decals in magenta were purchased and tank painted.

A reproduction chain case was brought from another enthusiast who manufactures parts in Slovenia.

Brake plates and drums are not correct but if you can supply some let me know.

So six years after first getting the bike it was time to start it up, the carb also is not correct and gearing is also a bit of a guess , so not sure how this will go, got the oil flowing through so added some fuel and after quite a few kicks it fired up, maybe it had forgotten how to go ? Once running starts first or second kick now.

The mag and choke levers haven't been re plated this was a gift from a great guy and friend of many Mark McClellan who tragically was killed on his way to the 2018 Norton rally in New Plymouth so this lever will stay as given to us by Mark.

Motor sounds sweet and pulls like a train ,frame is only slightly heavier than a bicycle so goes really well although brakes need a bit more work.

Seat cover is a reproduction and doesn't fit correctly ,so if you know someone who can make one let me know also.

Its off to be vinned in a couple of weeks, hopefully no problems there, fingers crossed.

I'm a bit slow at getting this away went to be vinned today got the big tick so need to bolt plate on and get out and do a few shakedown runs.

Maybe you will see her out on a run with one of her shed mates a M8 and a M9.

Vero International Festival of Motoring Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022.

The dates are Jan 16 to 21st 2022 The organising Committee has sent out to all VCC members by email a request for your expression of interest. .

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going.

Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses.

Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Management Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead.

This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous International Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates together, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.

As mentioned at the AGM this issue is late as Mac and I attended the final (40th) Brass Monkey over Queens Birthday weekend and I have just returned home. I apologise to those who were not aware of this change and can assure you no-one missed their newsletter this month- its just 1 week later than usual.

At the AGM I was advised of some changes to the listing in the newsletter some I have done but I have missed a couple that were mentioned to me, sorry I had nothing to write these down and the memory isn’t what it used to be, IF your change has not been made can you call me and I can do this for the next issue?

And the Monkey, great fun, not cold - Mac was in shorts for the evening although he did appear to be only one of two that appeared to be silly enough to be doing so. Good ride there and back and great catching up with many old friends and enthusiast's.

EVENTS : This Month….

20th June: Leave clubrooms at 10.30, destination Rai Valley to meet with the usual Nelson riders. Note the earlier start and the venue change.

25th June: Natter & Noggin’ 5.00pm Clubrooms for Events and Night Trials followed by Natter and Noggin with soup and buns.

Next Month 11th July: Snow Run to Pelorus Bridge – combined with Nelson VCC.

18th July: Motorcycles leave the clubrooms on the annual garage run.

25th July: Club midwinter dinner and prizegiving. Time and venue to be advised.

July: A visit to JEM Aviation's restoration facility. Dated to be arranged.
