Gettingthespoutingscleanedoutlastmonthwasabitofawashout becauseoftheweather,sothismonththefocuswillagainbeon removingleavesandrubbishoutofthespoutings. Pleasebringladdersandtoolsetc.tohelpwiththiswork.

TheBranchislookingforavolunteer(orvolunteerswhocouldshare theworkload)tocomealongtothemonthlyWorkingBeesatthe Clubroomsanddoindoorjobswhichwouldmaintaintidinessand cleanlinessintheMembers’Room.
Thiswouldinvolvetaskslikevacuuming,dusting,cleaningthetoilets/ basins,andgettinganyrubbishreadytoberemovedetc.

Wellwhataninterestingmonthit’sbeenforme,thenewCommitteehashitthe groundrunningandI’mlookingforwardtotheyearahead.
CathyClementsisdoingalotofworkatthemomenton60,50,35and25year serviceawards.Thisissomethingthatasabranchwehaven’tkeptupwithfora verylongtimeandIthinkisimportanttoshowmemberstheirloyaltytothevintage CarClubisappreciated.
AsIwritethisI’msittinginarepurposedshearer’squartersontheTaihapeNapier roadthatishometoKiwiQuinoaandmyjobistenminutesdriveuptheroad. ThisisallcountrythateightManawatumembersincludingmyselfwentthroughon theHighlandFlingoverANZACweekend,thisisasighttobeholdwitheightyfive vintageandveterancarsbasedinTaihapeoutthereenjoyingsomeveryinteresting backcountryroadsandfarmtracks.HometohomeIcovered480milesforthe weekend.OneofthethingsIenjoyaboutthesetypesofralliesisI’mnotthe youngestpersondriving!!!It’sgreattoseesomeoftheoldermembershavingtheir grandkidsthatareintheirearlytwentiessharingthedrivingwiththem.
OnthisnoteIhaveputmyhanduptoorganisetheHighlandFlingfor2024based outofFeilding.Ihavealreadydonesomeveryinterestingreconnaissancesofar thankstoVernJensenbeinganApitinative.
Glyn’sPostrallywasafantasticdayoutwithoneentryevendrivingupfrom Wellingtonfortheday.Itwasagoodlengthrallyfortheeraofvehiclesat approximately160milesandlunchatWanganuibranchclubroomsandacoupleof goodfindsintheirpartsshed.
ThenextbigeventfortheBranchisourannualNighttrialthiseventhasbeengoing sincebeforeIwasbornandhaschangedovertheyears,originallyitwouldstartat about9pmandsometimeswouldn’tfinishtill9am!!Thingsareabitmoresensible nowdaysandlastyear’seventwasveryenjoyableandnodoubtthisyearswillbe too.

IspentmycareerinAdmin/Legalroles,mostlywithFonterra,asPAtoManagement andthenasIntellectualProperty/ResearchContractsAdministratorforanumberof years,whilestudyingtowardsmyLegalExecutiveQualification.I'vealsobeenthe Health&SafetyCo-ordinatorforabusinessunitofalargecorporatecompany. Workingdaysovernow,andsometimeonmyhands,I'mquitehappytobecome moreinvolvedwiththeVCC.

DeirdreandIwereinvitedbyourdaughtertoattendthisauctionandtorestricther husbandfrombiddingtoohigh.TwoweekspriorthesamevendorsheldaFarm Machineryauctiononthesamepropertywhichwasattendedbyapproximately500 people.
WedrovenorthThursday4th Maythroughplentyofrainandwenttovieweverything ontheFridaymorninginmorerain,parkinginthenearbymuddypaddock.
Gumbootsandraincoatswere compulsorythatdaybutsome peopleweredressedlike townies.TheBurgess propertyisverycloseto TeArohamountainandthere wasplentyofmudtopaddle through.Thefirstshedhad carswithroomtowalkaround.
Thebigmainshedhadthe restofthecarsandtrucks packedveryclosetogether. Therewereabout300mm betweeneachvehiclefor peopletosqueezethrough.
Someofthevehiclesmayhavebeeninthatpositionfor40yearsbutatleasttheywere dry.Mostofthetyreshadaironlyinthetop.Becauseoftherainitwasdarkinside theshedanditwasdifficulttoinspectthevehicles.Somepeoplewereusingtheir phonetorchestoseeabitbetter.Thetractorswereallinanothershedandmuch easiertoview.
Saturday,SaleDay.Dueto heavyovernightrainthe auctioneershadtoamendthe onfarmparking.Buyerswere askedtoparkinTeAroha townandcatchashuttlebus totheproperty.Atthe propertycowshedalargetv screensimilartorugbygames wassetuponahighframeat thebackofthetanker turnaroundtrack.
PGGWrightsonspottersstood uphighonseveraltruckdeckstodotheirjob.

Approximately500bidderswereonsiteandanother500wereoffsiteviaonlineor phonelinkstothisauction.Thepublichadthechoiceofsittingonwhiteplasticchairs orstandingintherainorshelterinnearbysheds.Wechosetostandjustbehindthe seatingsowecouldseethescreen.
Thefirstitemwasa1929ModelAtrucksuitableforrestoringanditsoldfor$16000. Intotaltherewereapproximately40vehiclessold.Thehighestpricewasa1966Ford Mustang-guesshowmuch.
A1948FordCoupeexcopcar wentfor$36000.We dreamedabouta1955Ford F100V8trucknicelyrestored whichwentfor$46000.No wedidnotbid.
The18tractorsweremainly Fordsons,withafewMassey Fergusonsandacoupleof FordFergusons.Thesewere soldfrom$1000upto$8000 dependingontheircondition. Wedidnotseeallthetractors soldbecausewehadanother appointment.
Oursoninlawdidnotbidbecausehispreferredvehiclewasmissingontheday. Buyersweregiven8weekstocollecttheirpurchases.Somevehicleswentasfaras Invercargillandatleastonepersonboughttwovehiclestoaddtohiscollection. CongratulationsmustgotoPGGWrightsonforconductingsuchawell-organizedsale undersuchdifficultconditions.Itrainedalmostcontinuouslyduringtheauction. TheMustangsoldfor$52000.

TheEarlierDays:Theoriginalcompanywasestablishedin1870byJamesStarleyandWilliam Hillman.Theybuiltwire-spokewheelsunderthefirstBritishpatent;thisallowedthemalsoto buildalighter"pennyfarthing"bicyclewhichtheynamed'Ariel'(thespiritoftheair).Theyput thenameonthefactorywheretheymadepenny-farthingbicyclesandsewingmachines.In1885 JamesStarley'snephew,JohnKempStarley,inventedtheRoverSafetyBicycle-abicyclewith similarlysizedwheelsandchaindrivetotherearwheel,thedesignusedonbicyclestoday. ArielmergedwithWestwoodManufacturingin1896andmadeapoweredtricyclein1898witha 2.25hpdeDion.

WorldWar1,ArielMotors concentratedonlarge,solid, conventional,4-cylindermachines
basedonavarietyofContinentalmakes,mainlyMercedes.Thelatterwereknownas Ariel-Simplex.Somebigsixeswerealsobuilt.Inabout1909,afewArielswerefitted withAlfordandAlderfront-wheelbrakes.A1.3litrelightcarwasannouncedin1915, butthewarkilledit.
Afterthewar,thecompany'seffortsweredevotedprincipallytomotor-cycles,butfor 1923theytriedtocashinonthesmallcarboomwiththeArielNine.Thiswasasimple three-seaterpoweredbyanair-cooledflattwinengineofalittlelessthan1-litre capacity.Itwasnoisyandvibratedbadly,butanimprovementwasofferedin1924in theshapeofan1100cc4cylinderwatercooledengineof10horsepower.

Arielswereavailablewitheitherair-cooledorwater-cooledenginesof30hpusinga singleoverheadcamshaft.Radiatorswereovalinshape,reminiscentoftheDelaunayBelleville,givingrisetotheirslogan‘LookfortheOvalFront’.In1907themakename waschangedtoMaryland.

Duringmuchofits83-yearlife,Austinwasaserialmakeroftediouslydependable familycars.Butitalsoproducedtwolandmarkdesigns,bothcalledAustinSeven. The1922originalwasanaffordablecarthatputmuchofEnglandonwheels,while its1959namesaketriggeredasmallcardesignrevolution.ThatcarwastheMini, theSevenlabellingsoondropped.
TheMiniwasalsoavailableinlargersizesasthe1100andthe1800,bothadvanced AlecIssigoniscreations.LikebothAustinSevens,the1100(andnearidentical Morris)wouldbemassivesellers.Butitwas1973’s1100replacementthatdoomed Austin.DesignedasacarforEurope,theAllegrowasneitherthatnoran acceptablereplacementfornearlythree-quartersofthetwomillionpeoplewhohad bought1100-1300s.
BythispointAustinwasembeddedwithBritishLeyland’sAustin-Morrisvolumecar division,whichthecompanywasabletorevive.Thatalmostcamewiththehighly successfulminiMetro,buttheawkwardlyformedMaestroandMontegofold-ups blewmuchoftheresultinggoodwill.Austinwitheredin1988withAustin-Rover’s relabellingtoRover,theMetro,MaestroandMontegobrieflylivingoninastrange stateofbrandlessness.
