I N T R O D U C T I O N The essential part played by Exposed Leaf Surface Area and the importance of top grade trellising equipment Most of the higher grade French vineyards are conventionally set out on a trellis. This is often due to vast viticulture experience. Ecophysiological research and viticulture techniques have led to a number of important methods being adopted for the quality of grapes and wine, bringing focus to bear on the important parts played by the Exposed Leaf Surface Area, the micro-climate in which the grapes grow, the control of the vigor and yield and the development of older wood. Practically, this has resulted in trellis rows being optimized and of new and more interesting trellis models being proposed as an initial development. With vines set out on conventional trellises, it is essential to use top grade trellising and carry out careful lifting, for the following reasons: • The investement into the initialization of the vineyard is soon amortized because, as a general rule it represents less than 4% of production costs and it becomes essential to choose top quality trellising materials (stakes, anchors, wires, clips, etc.) to avoid excessively frequent and costly replacements. • Properly done lifting of the vegetation at a sufficiently early stage is essential for controlling the microclimate in which the grape bunches develop and is an important quality aspect. • Properly managed trellising is also particularly conducive to successful grape harvest mechanization, early cutting back, trimming, leaf stripping and powder spraying. • If the vine trellises are correctly set out they add an immediate aesthetic aspect to the conventional vineyard landscape.
