N e w Pa c e o f L i v i n g An update from Southeast Asia

Having recently moved to a new city on a new island, one of the biggest differences for me has been adjusting to a different pace of living. Primarily a rural culture, I am learning to accept this slower pace and to function without grumbling. What I view as interruptions and inconveniences are the moments that the Lord often orchestrates to bring meaningful interactions with people into my life. Making these relational connections make all the difference for my attitude and perspective; Jesus was a man who did great things for the Kingdom in the moments of interruption and my hope is to be like Jesus in this way. When my house takes too long to clean and renovate, when people arrive to meetings late, or when everything takes too long to be efficient, I am choosing to ask Jesus what he has for me in the moment instead.

Looking into New Eyes A story from North Africa

We took our Muslim friend with us to a neighboring country recently and upon returning, we have noticed our friend appears to be transformed. While on this trip, he walked through the streets, looking into the eyes of the local people and began to understand their lives and challenges. As we continued our journey, he experienced countless cultural differences and his assumptions were challenged daily, especially in the reality that this was the first place he had ever been to where Islam was not the dominant religion. He expressed feeling humbled by learning from new perspectives. We pray for “S” as he begins to rethink things, that he would also rethink who the Author and Perfecter of Our Faith truly is.

Peace Amidst Protests An update from our Middle Eastern refugee worker For the past several weeks, there have been major protests going on nationwide, calling for a change in government. It’s kept us in “hibernation” mode as we simply stay at home, unless going out in pairs early in the morning because the chaos picks up. All major roads are closed, blocked by tents and protestors. The problem is that we don’t know when this will end, or how it will end. We feel stuck as we are kept from engaging with families or conducting research for the sake of opening our medical clinic. What we do know is that humanly standards of progress aren’t what we should be measuring; being cooped up at home is teaching us that our sole job is to abide with the Lord. When we can’t get into the camps, when we can’t get through the roads, when we can’t do anything but wait, we know that sitting with the Lord is all that is needed. The God of the Impossible is calling us to abide, to pray, and to trust. We feel peace amidst the protests here, knowing who is truly reigning over the nation.

The same thing is true of a woman or a man. You can tell the greatness of people by the size of the wake they leave behind. Some people, when they’re gone, leave a tidal wave in their wake. The world is changed forever because of the impact of that one person. And some people barely leave a trace. There is nothing that indicates that they’ve passed this way.

At the time Jesus was born the Romans dominated the world. Roman religion had no problem with poverty, starvation, homelessness, gladiators, crucifixion, the deliberate killing of infants or adultery. In Roman religion there was no connection between offering sacrifices to the gods and being a moral person. There was no religious obligation to feed the hungry, to visit

It was Jesus, following the tradition of the Hebrew prophets, who pulled together religion and morality. It was Jesus who taught that if you are going to say you love God, you also ought to love your neighbor. And it was Jesus who said that we are hypocrites if we claim to

And when the opportunity comes, share the Lord. Pray for people. And I did that in the work place and I saw people healed. healed. He became a Christian as a result.” In the mid-90s, Rich asked Craig if he would consider becoming an executive pastor. Craig’s question became ‘Is God changing my calling?’ Due to the gravity of that question, both men agreed to enter into a season of serious prayer over several weeks. The Friday and Saturday before Craig was to give Rich his answer, Craig taught a healing conference in Windsor, Canada. At the conclusion, a woman went to him. “I feel like the Lord gave me something for you. And I’ve never done

When you walk into a building, you normally don’t think about the steel and beams that hold it together. But without such an infrastructure, the building cannot stand. It’s the same with the church and the behindthe-scenes players who make the organization run like a well-oiled machine. Craig Heselton, Executive Pastor, is one of those hidden undergirds of Vineyard Columbus. Prior to becoming Executive Pastor, at Vineyard, Cooper Road, Craig had a degree in chemical engineering and was in manufacturing pharmaceutical bulk actives and fine chemicals. Contract manufacturing is an entrepreneurial business, and extremely competitive. Craig’s career advanced quickly in the chemical industry. He always seemed to be reaching higher levels sooner that the average person. Despite being on the fast track and loving his job he hadn’t forgotten that he’d wanted to be a pastor or a missionary.

decision and The Lord says ‘Not Yet.’” Craig shared his answer with Rich and went back to his job which he never stopped loving. He was asked again in the late 90s and didn’t sense a definitive answer from God. But, in 2001, Danny Meyer—who’d been with the church from the beginning and one of the original elders—decided to plant a church in Sunbury. Rich was losing his closest confidant on staff and again asked if Craig would consider leaving his job to become executive pastor. In the eighteen months prior, Craig had been offered a career–launching opportunity to become like the divisional director which would be at the corporate headquarters. This would be VP track ultimately and place him in the corporate world where real wealth is accumulated along with growing importance as a senior

He described becoming a pastor as stepping back from

“The Lord says go.” The second half seemed more puzzling. “And don’t worry about your children because I’ll take care of them.” “I thought, my children? I’m not going anywhere.” As he walked around the plant the following Monday, he realized “his children” were the people that worked for him. His heart had been that he would have opportunities to share the kingdom and Jesus with them but Craig understood that now they were in the Lord’s care. “so i felt like i could let go of that calling. and embrace a new calling. and jumping into the unknown.” The position of executive pastor exists to make the church successful and to make the senior pastor

the front lines to a more logistical position, equipping those on the front line. That stepping back left a void in his life. He missed looking for opportunities to have God conversations and lead people toward Jesus and love of God. For two years he continued to participate in the former job’s golf league once a week. He wanted to be a pastor, not a manager, and needed a pastoral ministry. Pastor Rich placed him over The Empowered Life ministry up until Craig passed the baton a few years ago. His presence on staff did not go unnoticed. In a recent comment Outreach and Connection Pastor Kerry Davis shared his impressions of the Executive Pastor. “Craig has pressed into flooring hard after the Holy Spirit since before this church became a Vineyard in 1987.
