FROM THE PRESIDENT…Don Johnson The first item on the agenda this month is to congratulate the Captain Joan Coles and the ladies of our A2 pennant team in winning the final at Glenelg on Sunday the 10th of July. The team was represented by Cathy Hayward, Mary O’Hagan, Ros Brunton, Caitlin Peirce, Kathy Michaelsen and Lyn Cummings. The weather conditions on the day were very windy with a small amount of light rain which at times made play very difficult. It makes you appreciate and realise how quiet it is at our Club as you hear planes taking off and landing. Well done ladies. The Men’s Simpson Cup and the Bonnar Cup teams have had a very tough year but both teams have managed to remain in the same competition for next year. At the time of writing we only require approximately two days pumping and all the dams will be full. The pumps installed on the edge of the Happy Valley Reservoir have certainly made sure that we fill the dams each year. With the amount of rain that we have had the water in the bore has increased at this stage to 41 metres above the pump. This would suggest that we could pump water from the bore this coming summer at the same rate as last summer…good news. We now have a software program called “Flexi Management System” which has been developed by MiClub to assist with the recording of points when they are used. It does it automatically when people book into MiClub. The system also allows Flexi Members to top up their points on line at any time. The system will save considerable time in the office where points were previously manually recorded. The work for the dole program is continuing to achieve results as expected and we now have another 20 people in two lots of 10 commencing shortly. This will provide further funds thus allowing the Club to look at other projects during the period we have these people at the Club. As our first priority we will continue to paint areas where we intend replacing the carpet. You will also notice that we are recoating table legs to improve what we currently have. The proceeds from the Telstra tower have been received and debts paid off with the ANZ Bank and Capital Finance. There will certainly be some significant changes in our Balance Sheet in the end of year Financials. The format of Twilight Golf will change this year by having just one competition for both men and ladies. Further details will be provided prior to a start of this competition. I must also congratulate Caitlin Peirce for being selected in the State Schools team which will be competing against other States next month at South Lakes, Victor Harbour and McCracken. Well done Caitlin.

Congratulations to the A2 team for winning the Final at Glenelg against Royal Adelaide 3 & 2 on Sunday 10th July. Congratulations also to those who represented the Club in A2, Cleek, Hickory and Nomads competitions. It’s a credit to you all for making yourselves available to represent our Club. To thank those ladies and others who represented the Club in the past year, we are having our Representatives Dinner on Monday 1st August. A big thank you also to the ladies committee for providing salads, slices etc… Once again, Terry from Fashion F’less at The Hub Shopping Centre and Annette Yeomans from Grace Jewellery will be available for Monday 29th August for our Fashion Parade. Put the date in your diaries ladies as it is a great day to have devonshire tea, some bubbles, catch up with friends and have the opportunity to purchase some lovely clothes, jewellery and skin care products.

Box seats plus airfares, accommodation etc, But he didn't realise when he bought them that this is going to be on the same day as his wedding So he can't go. It is with great pride that I announce our A2 Women won on Sunday 3/2. They played Royal Adelaide at Glenelg under challenging weather conditions. Well done to all the Ladies, their caddies and the support group.
UP COMING EVENTS.
We have Southern Shield challenge coming up on the 1st August. Names for this to be put on the sheet on the White Notice Board in the locker room. The handicap range is 16.5 to 25.8. Our next Social Sunday is 7th August. Father/Son or Family Pairs is on the 17th July, entries are still open Pam Deacon is organising Nomads while Bev Cross is away. The next game is on the 21st July at Blackwood. Due to weather conditions on 12th July, play was deemed too dangerous. Monthly Medal has been rescheduled to 19th of July. Pink Ball Day has been rescheduled to 9th August as it is the final of the Laurel Wreath, which will still be played.
From JOHN FORD… Pastoral care!!
Murphy goes to his friend Pat and says ... "I'm sleeping with the Pastor's wife. Can you hold him in church for an hour after services for me?" Pat doesn't like it but being Murphy's long-time friend, he agrees. After service, he starts talking to the Pastor, asking him all sorts of stupid questions, just to keep him occupied. Finally the Pastor gets annoyed and asks Pat what he's really up to. Pat, feeling guilty, finally confesses to the Pastor. "My friend is sleeping with your wife right now, so he asked me to keep you occupied." The Pastor smiles, puts a brotherly hand on Pat's shoulder and says...
"You better hurry home. My wife died two years ago!!”
FROM THE CAPTAIN…Barry Phillips Another season of Pennant competition is now behind us and although I took a back seat role this year it was just as stressful. I won’t go into detail as the respective team managers have provided a summary elsewhere in this edition but we survived relegation from both Simpson Cup and Bonnar Cup by the slimmest of margins. That is not to say we weren’t competitive, particularly in Simpson Cup and as strange as it sounds we could have just as easily been in the final. I must thank the team managers, Les Buckley who took on the role as manager of the Bonnar Cup team and Nigel Coles who was “promoted” to manager of our Simpson Cup team. Thanks of course to the players, caddies and members who came out to support the teams. As usual a special thanks to Steve Krause and his team for coaching and general assistance throughout the season. I have reserved a huge thanks, again, to Wayne Corbett for his ongoing commitment to junior development in general and as manager of our junior pennant team. Well done Wayne and team. Oh, while on the subject of Pennant, apparently our ladies A2 Pennant team won the final against Royal Adelaide on Sunday 10th July. Seriously, congratulations to the ladies concerned who survived the cold conditions at Glenelg and came out winners 3 matches to 2. Well done girls. Not a good year for Royal Adelaide who have been relegated from Simpson Cup in the men’s competition. Best of luck to the Father and Son and Family Pairs teams for Sunday 17th July. Last minute entries will be accepted if you are eligible to play and have overlooked to enter. A reminder for the Men’s Foursomes Championships coming up in August, entry forms will be out shortly. Also an early reminder for the Men’s Club Championships which kick off end of August. A little earlier this year to avoid greens renovation. Same format this year, championships will be over four consecutive stroke rounds on Saturdays with automatic entry on payment of the weekly competition fee which is likely to be increased by $1.00 just for the championships. Well that’s all from me for now, good golfing and I’ll see you out and about on the course.

Simpson Cup (provided by Team Manager, Nigel Coles) Whilst our 2016 Simpson Cup team only recorded 2 wins during the season they had 3 very close matches that could have gone either way and it shows that our players can be competitive at the highest level. Our wins were against Kooyonga and Blackwood. We lost 4 to 3 against Royal Adelaide and Tea Tree Gully, with the final matches being decided on the 18th both times. Against Southern 3 of the matches went to the final hole and we only scored a half. If things had gone our way in those close matches we could have been comfortably near the top of the table. But they didn’t and for the final round we had to play Glenelg on their home course. They were undefeated and we were battling to avoid relegation. In the end we managed 2 1/2 matches to Glenelg’s 4 1/2. Without the win we were at the mercy of the result between Royal Adelaide and Tea Tree Gully. Fortunately they recorded 3 1/2 each, giving us a slight edge over Royal Adelaide by 2 matches. By the slimmest of margins we survived to compete in Simpson Cup again in 2017.

Bonnar Cup wrap up (from Les Buckley, Team Manager, Vice Captain)
Competing in Bonnar Cup again in 2016 was a challenge for the Vines. A squad of nine members was rotated during the seven rounds, with some exceptional golf played by all players but unfortunately without the results we sought. Matches were played in some of the worst conditions encountered this year, with both wind and rain making golf a very difficult proposition. Notwithstanding, the team were successful in 33% of matches played, but with most of our opposition playing off handicaps of 2 or better, it was always going to be hard. The highlight was a win against North Adelaide on the wettest of all days. With a final game requiring at least 2 matches to the good, we finished ahead of North Adelaide by 1 ½ matches to remain in the Bonnar cup for next year. Thanks must go to all players for their dedication to pennants. RULE of the month…explanation
…from John Ward Adverse conditions such as prolonged rains can make fairways unsatisfactory and sometimes prevent use of heavy mowing equipment. When such conditions are so general throughout the course the Committee believes “preferred lies” would promote fair play or help protect the course. Therefore the following Local Rule is brought into play. A ball lying on a closely–mown area through the green may be lifted, without penalty, and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player MUST mark its position. Having lifted the ball, he MUST place it on a spot within 6 inches of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green. A player may place his ball only ONCE, and it is in play when it has been placed (Rule 20-4). If the ball fails to come to rest on the spot on which it is placed, Rule 20-3 applies. If the ball when placed comes to rest on the spot on which it is placed and subsequently moves, there is NO penalty and the ball MUST be played as it lies, unless the provisions of any other Rule apply. IF A PLAYER FAILS TO MARK THE POSITION OF THE BALL BEFORE LIFTING IT OR MOVES THE BALL IN ANY OTHER MANNER, SUCH AS ROLLING IT WITH A CLUB, HE INCURS A PENALTY OF ONE STROKE. Note: “Closely-mown area” means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less. PENALTY FOR BREACH OF LOCAL RULE: Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes. *If a player incurs the general penalty for a breach of this Local Rule, no additional penalty under the Local Rule is applied.”

“Steve was weak”
Many years ago when I was still allowed to play golf, I accidentally overturned my golf cart. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out: "Are you okay, what's your name?" "It's Steve, and I'm okay thanks," I replied as I pulled myself out of the twisted cart. "Steve, she said, "forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while and I'll help you get the cart up later." "That's mighty nice of you," I answered, "but I don't think my wife would like it." "Oh, come on, now "Elizabeth insisted. She was so very pretty and very persuasive...I was weak. "Well okay," I finally agreed and thought to myself, "but my wife won't like it." After a few restorative Scotch and waters, I thanked Elizabeth. "I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset. So I best go now." "Don't be silly!" Elizabeth said with a smile and a wink. "She won't know anything. By the way, where is she?"
"Still under the cart, I guess" I said.
JUNIORS…from Wayne Corbett Round 5 of this year’s Junior Division 2 (handicap competition) was played under very cool and cloudy conditions at the Kooyonga golf course against the very competitive team from Tea Tree Gully. With possibly top position at stake, the representatives for our Club in this important game were Ryan Francis (Captain), Emily Dunbar, Jordan Percey, Louis Pretty and Alex Manton. On completion of the front 9 holes of play our situation was looking somewhat grim with Jordan and Alex holding square, Emily now 6 down and Ryan 2 down but Louis was still playing good golf and, under the watchful eyes of his caddie (Tony Clarke), was sitting comfortably at 6 up. After being 6 down through her first 7 holes, Emily held her score at 6 down through to the 12th hole but eventually ended her match, losing 6 and 5. Louis was continuing on his merry way and soon posted a commanding 7 and 6 win to leave the game score tied at this stage and with 3 close matches still in progress. Jordan rallied from being square after the front nine to win 3 of his next 4 holes to post a very composed and competent 4 and 3 win. One of the many highlights of Jordan’s match came on the long 9th par 5 hole when he hit the flagstick with his third shot. Luckily, his ball settled less than a metre from the cup for his tap-in birdie. Then young Alex Manton, after moving to 1 up at the 12th hole, also came in with a wonderful 4 and 3 win. This sealed the overall win for the team with Ryan still on course endeavouring to improve the final result for the team. Despite his match seesawing all day and his putter not performing, he eventually lost his close match 4 and 2. The final result for our team was an extremely close and nail biting 3 and 2 win. This placed our team in second position behind West Lakes.
It was a very cool and overcast day that our juniors faced at The Grange (East Course) on Sunday 26th to play the top placed team from West Lakes. Representing our Club were Jarred Clarke, Jordan Percey, Louis Pretty, Ryan Scovell and Alex Manton with Charlie Nobbs as our reserve player. After the first 9 holes, it was obvious that our young team would be struggling to maintain our hold on second place on the ladder. Jarred was 5 down, Jordan 2 up, Louis 2 down, both Ryan and Charlie (who was playing a practice round) 3 down and Alex 4 down. It wasn’t long before Jarred posted his 6 and 5 loss followed closely by Ryan’s 5 and 4 loss whilst bravely fighting a severely damaged ankle ligament. Louis (who had to concede 8 strokes) and Alex both followed shortly thereafter with 4 and 3 losses despite playing good golf. Jordan and Charlie continued playing well in the passing misty rain showers to keep their respective matches alive. Jordan’s excellent play and golf skills eventually prevailed to provide him with a very solid and competent 3 and 2 win. Charlie, under the watchful eyes of his caddie friend (Norm), was 2 up with 2 to play when his putter really decided not to agree with him. Unfortunately, he lost the 17th and, after a good approach onto the 18th green, unluckily, missed his short putt that would have seen him finish 1 up in his close and entertaining match. Nevertheless he played extremely well, rarely missing a fairway all day and, for him to finish square with bigger his opponent, was a great outcome for him and confirmed his talent and rapidly improving skills. Our team lost this game 4 and 1 which meant we were now in third position on the ladder. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Sunday 3rd July our junior’s travelled to the Willunga Golf course to play their final game against the team from The Grange. Representing our Club in the cold wintery conditions were Ryan Francis (Captain), Jordan Percey (Vice Captain), Louis Pretty, Alex Manton and Charlie Nobbs. Play got under way from the 1st tee on time and after the first few holes it was apparent that our team was in for a tough day with most struggling to adjust to the pace of the greens. Fairways were a little soft and provided very little run which assisted the older, bigger and longer hitting Grange players. Despite our team giving their best efforts, we were down in four of the five matches after the first 9 holes of play. Shortly thereafter, Jordan registered a rare loss for him, losing his match 7 and 6. He was soon followed by Louis who posted a 5 and 4 loss, followed by Charlie’s 3 and 2 loss and then Ryan’s 2 and 1 loss. Alex was continuing to play great golf and was extending his much longer hitting opponent all the way and eventually won his exciting match on the 18th hole, 1 up. Although our players were overpowered I was very proud of the way they played and gave their very best. This 4 and 1 loss meant that our team fell back to 4th position on the table. However this is still a fantastic result for our very young, talented and highly skilled team as at most games our players were giving away several shots to their respective opponents.

A nun walks into Mother Superior's office and plunks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh heavy with frustration. 'What troubles you, Sister?' asked the Mother Superior. 'I thought this was the day you spent with your family.' 'It was,' sighed the Sister. 'And I went to play golf with my brother. We try to play golf as often as we can. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to Christ.' 'I seem to recall that,' the Mother Superior agreed. 'So I take it your day of recreation was not relaxing?' 'Far from it,' snorted the Sister. 'In fact, I even took the Lord's name in vain today!' 'Goodness, Sister!' gasped the Mother Superior, astonished. 'You must tell me all about it!' 'Well, we were on the fifth tee... and this hole is a monster, Mother – 540 yard Par 5, with a nasty dogleg right and a hidden green... and I hit the drive of my life. I creamed it. The sweetest swing I ever made. And its flying straight and true, right along the line I wanted and it hits a bird in mid-flight!' 'Oh my!' commiserated the Mother. 'How unfortunate! But surely that didn't make you blaspheme, Sister!' 'No, that wasn't it,' admitted Sister. 'While I was still trying to fathom what had happened, this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs my ball and runs off down the fairway!' 'Oh, that would have made me blaspheme!' sympathized the Mother. 'But I didn't, Mother!' sobbed the Sister. 'And I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from God, this hawk swoops out of the sky and grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in his paws!' 'So that's when you cursed,' said the Mother with a knowing smile. 'Nope, that wasn't it either,' cried the Sister, anguished, 'because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the cup!' Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest, fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and said...
'You missed the #!*?#?/$!! (substitute Lord’s name in vain) putt, didn't you?'

THE “ODD JOB” WORKING GROUP From time to time members (both Male and Female) are provided with the opportunity to give some of their time to undertake some odd jobs around the golf course. This work is not heavy or arduous but is an important facet of our golf course maintenance program and in turn allows the ground staff to make the most efficient use of their expert abilities.
