FROM THE PRESIDENT…Don Johnson As we come to the end of another year it is interesting to look back at what the Club has achieved over the past twelve months. It started with the Work for the Dole program which has transformed the Clubhouse at no cost to the Club. The reduction of debt following the transfer of rentals being received to a Company at a considerable price has placed the Club in the best financial position it has been in for a number of years. The purchase of machinery will improve our greens without coring them. Membership numbers are increasing and I am sure that this can be attributed to the state of the course. There are plans in place to further improve the Clubhouse and I am sure everyone will agree that there are a number of items that require attention. The results that have been achieved would not have occurred without the dedication of our staff and volunteers. I can assure that at times the staff have worked additional hours beyond what is expected of them and for this I thank them on behalf of the members. I am sure the staff would appreciate comments from any members in regard to performance during the year. I must also thank Steve Krause and his staff for the service that has been provided over the past year. One of the main reasons for the continued development of our Junior Program is a direct result of what Steve has done for the juniors over the past twelve months. This has increased the number of junior members by 14. We have had a number of juniors participating in various State teams during the year obviously as a result of Steve’s coaching. The Annual Christmas Dinner was held on the 10th of December which once again was a great night with good food and music. I am sure that everyone that attended had an excellent night including one particular person, who will remain nameless. Once again, early in the New Year we will commence an advertising program in regard to membership and the Bistro to ensure we continue the growth in these areas of the Club. Increasing the use of the Bistro naturally increases the profit of the Bar. Finally I would like wish Members, Staff, Volunteers and Sponsors a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year.
FROM THE CAPTAIN…Paul Sutcliffe As a member who joined this Club in 1963, I am delighted to have been elected as Captain of this excellent and proud golf club, The Vines of Reynella. Known as the “Friendly Club” within the golfing circles of Adelaide, it has a history that began in the early part of the previous Century in 1925 For the information of newer members, The Vines Golf Club commenced as the Marino Golf Club on a site near the seaside of Marino Rocks, “that provides a view of Brighton, and Seacliff”. (an excerpt from the History of the Marino Golf Club by our life member Gretta Haylock) In 1925 the Club fielded a team to play against the Kensington Golf Club (now defunct) and even sent the Club Professional, Mr Fergus McMahon to play in the Open Championship of Australia in 1927. Over the years there have been many milestones including the Club’s involvement in the South Australian Golf Association Pennant Matches in 1929. The move to the existing location from Cement Hill on Ocean Boulevard in 1963 followed by a name change to the Vines Golf Club of Reynella, brought success by individuals in South Australian Golf, including players such as Hugh Bell, Gary Simpson and more recently Sam Earl as State Amateur Champions. Other successes were Elizabeth Saint, State Junior Champion and current playing member Wayne Carson, Champion of Champions. Added to these successes the Club was chosen for events such as the first Australian Professional Women’s Open Championship in 1973 (the women golfers then were known as “proettes”) and the South Australian P.G.A. State Championships in 2002/2003, these having done much to enhance our Club’s reputation. The Club has made its mark on South Australian Golf for over 80 years. With this in mind your Match Committee, Dean Nobbs (Vice Captain), Karen Parsons (Women’s Captain), Angela Beaty (Women’s Vice Captain) and I aim to continue in the footsteps of other dedicated Committee Members who have fostered the game of golf at The Vines Golf Club. We look forward to the challenge.

11th Fairway Sprigging of left hand side with Santa Ana grass has now been completed. This has been a project many years in the making. Originally the laying of Santa Ana on the RHS was a test of this new grass (then) and the existing couch was then the preferred grass at that time. Obviously the Santa Ana won the contest and was used throughout the golf course. Finally we have now completed the task. Preparation was by spraying the existing grass with growth retardant, furrows were then made with the root pruner, then individuals from the work for dole scheme and ODD JOB volunteers, on hands and knees, sprigged Santa Ana over 2 days. The new grass has taken well and the fairway is now back in play. Full coverage is expected to take 2 years. 3rd Front Tee Block Reconstruction will commence on Thursday 15th December with assistance from the ODD JOB volunteers and work for the dole participants. The sods will be removed and moved to the mounds on the 14th fairway. The existing irrigation is expected to be used with soil removed from the tee block and replaced with a suitable growing medium. Grass top will be taken from the practice fairway. The front tee is expected to be out of action for at least a month, so ladies will use the “back” tee block during this period. Hospitality…from Wayne Lines (Vice President, Hospitality) The last members draw for the year will be Friday 23rd Dec at the normal time of around 6.30 pm. Happy Hour and members draw will resume again Friday nights on January 6th. Xmas raffle will be drawn Friday 23rd…tickets can be purchased from the bar at $5 each. Thanks to Kitchen and Bar staff for our Xmas Dinner/Dance, once again the food was really good. The dance floor was busy with a few variations of dancing which kept us entertained. Well done to the members and friends for making the night a success. Merry Christmas and a happy new year and thanks for your support in 2016.

A WORD FROM THE GIRLS…from Jan Shaw (Vice President, Women’s Golf) The November AGM resulted in a number of changes to the Women’s Committee for 2017. Pam Deacon resigned as Vice Captain however is staying on the committee. Angela Beaty was elected as the new Vice Captain for the next 12 months. Two new members have also joined the committee – Ros Brunton and Alison Emmett. Deb Gill can now enjoy her retirement after stepping down as Vice President Women’s Golf for the past two years. Thanks Deb for your commitment to women’s golf at the Vines. In November several ladies dressed up in their tartans to celebrate St Andrew’s Day. Pam Deacon won best dressed this year. The Christmas Party was held on 8th December with 90 ladies and green keeping/office staff attending. The weather was a little muggy for some of the ladies as the tradition is to dress up in costumes and then play 9 holes of golf. The theme this year was to dress as your favourite famous male. There was a fantastic array of costumes again - well done. Four new ladies from the Get Into Golf Clinics also attended and got into the party atmosphere. Thanks to Wayne Lines for organising a visit from Father Christmas who arrived in a Golf Buggy with lots of gifts and chocolates for the ladies. Special mention must go the "The Beatles", "the Von Trapp Family Choir", Sally and our local "pro" (Mike Evans) for their entertainment on the day.

THE “ODD JOB” WORKING GROUP …from John Ward (on behalf of the Course Committee)
BECOME AN ODD JOBBER NEXT JOB…Thursday 15th December at 8:30am to help redevelop the front of the 3rd tee and transport that turf to plant out the mounds and surrounds in front of the 14th tee and green. The task should not take more than a couple of hours. All you need is gloves and a sun hat, all other equipment and transport will be provided by the Green staff. Remember many hands make light work. For those who can’t be there next Thursday I take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for your involvement this year and hope you have derived some pleasure and satisfaction from the odd jobs we have undertaken. This will be our last working bee for 2016.

Mixed Foursomes Championship for 2016
Rex Williamson and Caitlin Peirce have taken out the Mixed Foursomes Championships for 2016 to win by 7 strokes from Garry and Denise Merrick. Alan Fulton and Kath Hender took out the Nett Event for the third year in a row. They won by 6 strokes from Nigel and Joan Coles.

RULE of the month…explanation …from John Ward
LOCAL RULES The Rules of Golf address the subject of Local Rules and as provided in Rule 33-8. Local Rules; a. Policy Golf Club Committee may establish, make and publish Local Rules for local abnormal conditions on the golf course you are playing. b. Waiving or Modifying a Rule. A Rule of Golf must not be waived by a Local Rule. We at The Vines Golf Club of Reynella publish a set of Local Rules which are posted in the Starter’s Office or other designated notice boards close to the first tee. Furthermore, the Local Rules are printed on the back of all score cards issued to players. All players should acquaint themselves with the Local Rules of the Golf course they are playing and to avoid delays in play refer to them during their round of golf. Quite often there will be work being undertaken on the golf course and as a consequence some Special or Temporary Local Rules will be brought into play. All players must be aware of these Local Rules and apply them when appropriate to avoid the imposition of penalties or disqualification. Generally the Local Rules for most Golf Clubs will contain reference to specific areas and/or conditions on the Golf Course. For Example; 1. DEFINING BOUNDS AND MARGINS 2. WATER HAZARDS 3. AREAS OF THE COURSE REQUIRING PRESERVATION; ENVIRONMENTALLY-SENSITIVE AREAS 4. COURSE CONDITIONS- MUD, EXTREME WETNESS, POOR CONDITIONS AND PROTECTION OF THE COURSE 5. OBSTRUCTIONS 6. DROPPING ZONES For those members interested you can refer to pages 136 to 163 (Appendix 1) in the Rules of Golf (effective January 2016)
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR OF GOLF
More Success for our Juniors…from Wayne Corbett Four outstanding juniors from our Club were selected onto the State (Under 12) SA School Sports team of 12 to represent the State in the Craig Parry Shield tournament held at the Murray Bridge Golf Club during November. The four were Zoe Manton, Charlie Nobbs, Boston Price and Ryan Scovell. In extremely trying conditions over the 3 days of play, our juniors performed exceptionally well and their individual performances clearly demonstrate the benefit and success of our Junior Development Program and also highlight the coaching expertise of our Club professional, Steve. Results were:Day 1 – Four ball Ambrose SA Boys Team (1) – Finished 3rd in the Gross event. In this team were Boston Price and Ryan Scovell Craig Parry Shield (36 hole event over Day 2 and Day 3) SA Boys - WON the 36 hole Nett trophy, and SA Girls - WON the 36 hole Nett trophy. (We think this is a FIRST for our State to win both the Nett trophies) One of the many highlights was the spectacular individual performance of Zoe Manton. On the first day she recorded a nett score of 69 and then followed this up with a better nett score of 67 the next day.
