What is an Owl?

Owls are birds of prey with big eyes, sharp talons, and round faces. They are known for their silent flight and nighttime hunting.

Where Owls Live Owls live almost everywhere in the world. They can be found in forests, deserts, grasslands, and even icy tundras.

Owl Anatomy Owls have large eyes for night vision, sharp beaks and talons for hunting, and special feathers for quiet flight.

What Owls Eat Owls eat small animals like mice, rabbits, and insects. They swallow prey whole and cough up pellets of bones and fur.

Owlets

Baby owls are called owlets. They hatch in nests and rely on their parents for food until they can fly.

Owl Adaptations

Owls can see in the dark, fly silently, and turn their heads almost completely around. These adaptations make them excellent hunters.

Owl Families

Most owls are solitary, but some species live close to others. Families often stay together while raising young.
Owls in Flight Owls fly almost silently thanks to special feathers. This lets them sneak up on prey without being heard.
Owl Communication Owls use hoots, screeches, and whistles to talk to each other. Their calls can be heard far away at night.

Record-Breaking Owls

The Great Grey Owl is one of the largest owls, while the Elf Owl is the smallest, no bigger than a sparrow.

Fun Fact Owls can turn their heads almost all the way around, but not a full 360 degrees!
