What

Where

Hippos Live Hippos live in Africa, where they stay close to rivers, swamps, and lakes. They spend the day in water and come out at night to graze.

Hippo Anatomy Hippos have eyes, ears, and nostrils on top of their heads so they can see, hear, and breathe while almost fully underwater.

What Hippos Eat Hippos eat mostly grass. At night, they walk onto land and can eat up to 80 pounds of grass!

Calves Baby hippos are called calves. They can nurse underwater and ride on their mother’s back for safety.

Hippo Adaptations Hippos have thick, nearly hairless skin that oozes a pink fluid to protect them from

the sun. Their nostrils close when underwater.
Hippo Families Hippos are social animals. They live in groups called pods, sometimes with dozens of members.

Hippos and Water Hippos spend most of their time in rivers and lakes to keep cool. They are excellent swimmers and can even sleep underwater.

Hippo Communication Hippos grunt, roar, and spray water to communicate. Their sounds can even travel underwater.

Record-Breaking Hippos

The

common hippo

is one of the largest land animals, while the pygmy hippo is much smaller and lives in forests.
