About VSB

Since 1922, the Villanova School of Business (VSB) has been a leader among business schools in fostering an environment that enables students and members of our community to develop the knowledge, experience and values needed for a lifetime of positive impact and learning.

Our holistic approach includes a liberal arts foundation and collaboration with the business and academic communities to create, share and apply knowledge that bridges theory and practice. Our curriculum encourages students to explore the interconnected nature of business disciplines and to shape innovative and strategic solutions that address contemporary business problems.

Our Augustinian Catholic mission calls upon us to prioritize truth, community and service in all that we do. These values help make our leaders more knowledgeable and capable, our organizations stronger, and our purpose clearer. Therefore, our values serve as our foundation: to develop leaders who can move us forward in our tireless pursuit of creating a better world.

Become what you are not yet.” – St. Augustine

At the Villanova School of Business, we bring together world-class experts and exceptional students to cultivate the skills and appreciation necessary for an evolving business world.

Our community of alumni, parents and corporate partners is a key component in delivering a high-quality education, rooted in our Augustinian heritage and agile for the future. In partnership, we expand our boundaries of current business knowledge to develop new and better practices for an ever-changing global business landscape. The VSB community— faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends—is our greatest strength, and I am honored to serve as dean.

Here, we strive to create a learning environment that is uniquely VSB—one that transforms lives, positively impacts society, nurtures creativity, assures an analytical approach, provides a global perspective and develops ethical leaders. With more than a century of business education experience, we are grateful for our rich legacy and eager to shape a bright future.

Developing business leaders for a better world through the Augustinian values of truth, community, caring and leading through service.

Rooted. Restless. The Role of Values in Business Education

On any given day, business leaders make countless decisions. Whether it's managing people or directing investments, growing a business or creating a new one, every decision offers an opportunity for positive change—the potential to seek what makes us collectively better. Leadership that drives responsible decision-making while serving the common good demands more than knowledge and natural ability. It requires a deeply held commitment to pursuing excellence and the optimal outcome for both the organization and society.

At the Villanova School of Business, our Augustinian values provide the framework for our mission-led approach to business education. Driven by the ideals of truth, community and service to others, we create an environment where students strengthen their intellectual curiosity and their values. They build the competencies to succeed, to pursue lifelong learning and to truly become business leaders for a better world.

Our students, faculty, staff, alumni and partners are rooted in our Augustinian tradition, but also restless to become what we are not yet. This sense of commitment and shared purpose creates a strong community of humble servant-leaders who continually strive to succeed while serving others.

Our Values – Uniquely Villanova

VERITAS

Creative problemsolvers who tackle emerging business challenges with expertise and integrity, paired with courage, resolve and strength of character.

UNITAS

A welcoming community of collaborative leaders who think holistically and work across disciplines.

CARITAS

Humble servant-leaders who are ethical, empathetic decisionmakers, focused on the greater good.

Rooted in Ideals for a Better World

Our values are at the heart of our approach to business education. We passionately pursue truth in our curriculum, blending a strong liberal arts core with solid business fundamentals. Exposure to a breadth of topics enables our students to build strong analytical and critical thinking skills, becoming creative problem-solvers who can tackle the challenges of a global marketplace.

Our community advances the student experience even further. With small class sizes, VSB students engage with faculty and collaborate in and out of the classroom.

These interactions span research, case competitions, professional development, mentorship and much more. This emphasis on helping others succeed underlies a culture of collaborative learning at VSB. With individualized academic and professionaldevelopment counseling, career and executive coaching, and a robust lineup of academic and professional societies, our students build a network of supporters devoted to positive outcomes.

Above all, we embrace a commitment to service.

We readily engage in Villanova traditions such as St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service and the Special Olympics Fall Festival, but it doesn't end there. Service happens every day in our community. From alumni mentoring, to socially responsible investing, to social enterprise consulting, there is a shared recognition of our good fortune and a steadfast commitment to helping others find success.

Our students graduate with an orientation to serve as responsible leaders who use their knowledge to make a difference. And they are finding success: 96% of VSB undergraduates secured opportunities within six months of graduation, with an average starting salary of $84,880.

The strength of Villanova's community, rooted in these shared values, creates a unique learning environment and enables our students to achieve exceptional outcomes.

CRITICAL THINKING & PROBLEM-SOLVING

Inspired by a Restless Heart

Our values make us strong in many ways. And, as the custodians of our Augustinian heritage, we continue to invest in what moves us toward a better world. We asked our stakeholders, “What are the most important ways we could do more to advance our students, strengthen our community and support our faculty to achieve greater impact?” In true Villanova fashion, our entire community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and other partners—stepped forward with ideas and guidance to shape our priorities and further our mission.

For our community

A community is at its best when everyone feels a meaningful sense of welcome and belonging. This happens through a greater awareness of others' perspectives, as well as how our own actions impact the community. After all, when we feel welcome and included, we engage confidently and contribute without hesitation. The VSB community benefits from a diversity of experiences and thought, which fuels our growth and innovation—whether it's in the classroom, through research or in the workplace.

The VSB Unitas: Office of Community Engagement works to foster a sense of belonging and cultivate a welcoming environment throughout our community. For example, we offer a variety of educational opportunities to help students, faculty and staff become more conscious of differences in lived experiences and how our experiences affect the way we interact with each other. The office also explores opportunities to introduce elements of inclusive leadership throughout our business curriculum. These efforts seek to honor everyone’s unique contributions, so that our students, staff and faculty can fully engage in an exchange of diverse perspectives and ideas that enrich our work. Meaningful progress towards inclusivity as a leadership skill is a commitment we share with our external stakeholders and employers.

For our learning environment

VSB follows the teacher-scholar model in which faculty are strong educators and researchers. Students are taught by full-time faculty and experienced business practitioners, many of whom are deeply engaged with private, public and nonprofit organizations bringing current, real-world insights to the classroom experience. VSB supports excellence through:

• Teaching innovation grants to support new courses, innovative course delivery methods and the integration of up-to-the-minute business challenges within current courses

• Incorporating alumni, industry-specific advisory councils and other industry experts as instructional participants and content advisors so students exit courses career-ready

Research at VSB has far-reaching impact, from our students learning to apply knowledge to solve current business problems, to bringing clarity to complex economic and social issues. Generating knowledge and contributing to worldwide academic discourse ties directly to our pursuit of truth. In concert with the University strategic plan, VSB faculty focus on:

• Practical research with impact that improves today’s business practices and society

• Expanding undergraduate and graduate student research opportunities with faculty through the VSB Research Scholars program

Undergraduate Program

The Villanova School of Business is a nationally recognized business school known for its rigorous, integrated curriculum rooted in Augustinian Catholic values. From the first year, undergraduate students engage in strategic thinking, global perspectives and ethical decisionmaking through experiential learning, team-taught courses, executive engagement, business simulations and service opportunities.

About half of students’ coursework is completed within VSB, with small class sizes led by full-time faculty ensuring a personalized experience. A balance of liberal arts coursework that is infused with Augustinian values provides a “whole student” approach to learning, and students can elect to pursue a secondary academic program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to complement their business training. Students leave VSB career ready, with an agile, moral and forward-looking perspective.

Our highly integrated, rigorous curriculum— infused with team teaching, guest speakers, simulations, global perspectives, service-learning opportunities, a firm grounding in ethics and an applied education—prepares students to become outstanding leaders and global citizens within the ever-changing, complex and fast-paced world of business.

Students study the fundamentals of business, explore new issues in real time and complete corporate projects. All students earn Bloomberg Certification and have access to an online subscription to the Wall Street Journal, which is incorporated into their classroom experience.

VSB students begin taking business courses in their first year and continue to fulfill VSB core requirements throughout their academic career. In junior and senior years, students focus on major and minor coursework. VSB students take approximately 50% of their required courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to ensure they become more well-rounded individuals and are exposed to a wide range of topics.

VSB brings together exceptional students with world-class faculty. This collaboration, along with our multidisciplinary approach and liberal arts tradition, ensures that VSB students become successful businesspeople and first-class global leaders—leaders who know how to think holistically and solve problems creatively, and who remain committed to their ethical responsibilities throughout their careers.

The curriculum is supported by significant professional development and business communications training throughout the student’s four-year experience. This means students can write clearly, present effectively and manage their professional interactions with polish to achieve meaningful internships and full-time roles.

Backpack-to-Briefcase (B2B)

First Year: Assessing the Environment

Students focus on their introduction to college life, learn about majors and minors, begin their career exploration, and start to build their professional skills. This includes developing a résumé, introducing students to networking and business communication training.

Sophomore Year: Defining and Implementing Your Strategy

Students work to develop their personal brand through self-assessment and continue to explore career opportunities. Training includes the internship search process, interviewing, a deeper dive into networking skills, and developing their personal brand and professional values. Alumni and employers help students practice these critical skills.

Junior Year: Gaining a Competitive Edge

The Bartley BriefCASE Challenge calls for student teams to solve a cross-disciplinary business case through a VSB case competition. Written and verbal communication skills, analysis, team dynamics, and leadership are integrated throughout the course, culminating in a live presentation in which students present their findings to a panel of alumni, employers and faculty.

Senior Year: Capitalizing on Your Investment

Students continue career and professional development activities through VSB’s O’Donnell Center for Professional Development, Centers of Excellence, student business societies, the Villanova Career Center and other resources. Additionally, one-credit Leadership Academy courses on topics such as negotiations and communication are available to seniors.

EXPERIENCES

A central focus of coursework is giving students hands-on learning experiences by exposing them to real-world business situations. By combining academic work with actual business challenges, students can apply their classroom knowledge in practical ways.

The Victoria and Justin Gmelich ’90 Lab for Financial Markets

This state-of-the art lab is modeled as a Wall Street trading floor. Students take classes in the lab, study and practice coursework, and actively manage VSB’s student-managed investment funds in finance and real estate. Other disciplines leverage the extensive databases hosted in the lab for their coursework as well, exposing students to up-to-the-minute industry data.

The Laboratory for the Advancement of Interdisciplinary Research

This space hosts active research studies for VSB faculty. Work in the lab includes online experiments and surveys, in-person informational research interviews, and focus groups. Additionally, all undergraduate VSB students complete a research project using lab resources for a required core course.

VSB Mentor Program

student/alumni pairs matched since 2014

The VSB Mentor Program brings Villanova students and alumni volunteers together in one-on-one mentoring relationships to support students’ professional development. Students join the program as sophomores and select a mentor based on their interests. Mentors often facilitate career exploration, support the job-search process and assist in building the student’s professional network. Mentees gain a trusted advisor and role model to support them in decision-making, navigating the business world and planning their careers. Mentoring pairs work together through graduation and beyond.
