It is with much pleasure that I offer these few reflections on the past year. Perhaps they might best be considered a snapshot of some of the people, activities and events which have comprised the fabric of life at Villa over the past 12 months. While one’s personal reflections and memory rarely captures fully the totality of any experience, it is my hope that the words and pictures contained here and throughout the Villanovan 2012 will serve to provide a glimpse of the breadth, depth and richness of Augustinian education that has taken place as our community has strived to be “of one mind and heart on the way towards God”.
Reflecting the College’s strong reputation in the community, and the dedication and commitment of current and past staff, the demand for enrolment places at Villa remained very strong throughout the year. Year level enrolments for 2012 were:
Year 5: 112 Year 8: 169 Year 11: 169
Year 6: 131 Year 9: 172 Year 12: 162
Year 7: 115 Year 10: 171
Strong enrolments continue to feature throughout the immediate and foreseeable future, with 1215 student enrolments in place for 2013.
Villanova College relies on the generosity and support of each and every family which comprises our community. Without the parents, families and old boys who constitute our College we have no community. And so on behalf of the College, to each and every family, I say thank you for all that you have been and have contributed during the past year.
I extend a special word of thanks and gratitude to the College’s governing body, Villanova College Council. Under the dedicated and pastoral leadership of Dr Teresa Lynne the Council has consistently and diligently provided direction for and governance of the College throughout the year, and invaluable counsel and support for me.
I also say thank you to four support groups within our College community –Parents & Friends, Music Support, Sports Club and Old Boys. Under the able and dedicated leadership of their presidents, Ernie Civitarese (P&F), Rob Eadie (Music Support), Simon Healy (Sports Club) and John Walsh (VOBAI), together with the support of hard working executive committees and eager members, these groups have worked tirelessly throughout the year so that boys’ education at Villanova remains rich, varied, engaging and all the while authentically Augustinian. A special word of thanks is extended to Ernie and Simon both of whom concluded their roles as presidents of the P&F and Sports Club respectively at the end of the year. Both are Villa old boys who have given loyal service to the College – Ernie as P&F President for the past 3 years, and Simon as Sports Club President for the past 6 years. While both are very quick to say that what has been accomplished by P&F and Sports Club during their time at the helm has been the result of many people’s work and efforts, we are all well aware that every ‘good team relies on a good captain.’
Ernie and Simon have each been excellent captains of their respective teams. In this they have been ably supported by their executive committees and, of course, their life-partners - Grace (Ernie) and Julie (Simon). Julie has, in fact, been Secretary of the Sports Club since 2006 and also relinquished her role at the end of the year. The College community is richer for the service they have given, so willingly and generously.
We are exceptionally fortunate at Villa to have the staff we do; and I am especially grateful to each and every one of them for the very Augustinian way in which they continually strive to give witness to the Augustinian ‘gateway’ values of interiority, search for truth, and community. The composition of our staff at present is such that we are indeed very fortunate to have a number of staff who have been at Villa for a significant period of time and who are the bearers of our Augustinian heritage and story. Complementing these experienced staff members is a growing number of younger, less experienced but by no means less enthusiastic and energetic staff members who are keen to develop their skills as teachers & administrators while immersing themselves in the spirit and ethos of all things Augustinian … our Villanova leaders of tomorrow, if you will. I wish to acknowledge & thank all our College staff … I believe that we have wonderfully gifted and diverse teaching and support staff who consistently place the interests of our students before their own.
The College’s Evangelising Community Project continued to gain momentum throughout the year. Working closely with staff, students from Middle & Senior Schools gave their energies and commitment to a variety of mission, ministry and service initiatives. These included Australian Filipino Augustinian Solidarity (AFAS), Rosies, St Vincent de Paul (SVdP), Young Christian Students (YCS), Young Augustinian Youth Ministry (YAYM), Benenson Society and Student Council.
Ministry Camps were conducted at Kindilan Conference Centre, Redland Bay. Students participated in a variety of opportunities to reflect on, deepen and celebrate their personal relationship with God. These included Days of Reflection (Years 7-10), Year 12 Retreat, Whole-of-College Eucharistic Celebrations, Class Masses (Years 5 & 6), and Morning Mass (Middle & Senior School Pastoral Groups).
My sincere thanks to those students who assumed leadership roles in each of these important ministry groups in 2012, and to the large number of staff who supported them.
Villanova continues to commit itself to providing a rich educational environment in which the curriculum, the teaching and learning practices, our approach to pastoral care, and the activities of the community are all designed to encourage and nurture the development of understanding and wisdom in young adolescent males as they grow into responsible and capable young men. Evaluating the efficacy and effectiveness of the education which boys at Villa receive is more complex than a mere presentation of academic results … important though they are.
This year Villa students again performed very well in the Commonwealth Government’s National Assessment Programme in Literacy & Numeracy (NAPLAN), as the graphs indicate. Complementing these achievements by students in the Junior and Middle Schools are the fine results accomplished by this year’s Senior class.
At Villa it is our belief that a school climate in which young people feel safe, supported and a sense of belonging is the best environment for learning to occur. The College’s programme of class & year level camps is part of our ongoing endeavour to achieve and sustain such an environment.
During 2012 students in all year levels, with the exception of Year12, had the opportunity to attend and participate in an awayfrom-school camp. The programme for each of the year level camps has been planned in response to students’ particular needs and developmental stage of growth. Across the College, the Heads of School with the assistance of class teachers in Junior School and Year Coordinators in Middle & Senior Schools continue to monitor the camp programmes for coherence, continuity and educational purpose.
Pastoral care at Villanova is concerned with the development, support and service of right relationships between all in the College community – students, staff, parents and old boys. A comprehensive Social & Emotional Learning programme presents, teaches and nurtures the personal skills and attitudes necessary for the development of such right relationships. A Restorative Practices philosophy forms the basis of the College’s approach to repairing and restoring relationships which have been damaged through conflict or wrong-doing. Such a philosophy aligns closely with the College’s approach to education within an Augustinian tradition. While providing students with the opportunity to develop self-discipline, authentic relationships and positive behaviours in a caring & supportive environment, they are encouraged to strive for the Augustinian ideal of being ‘free people acting under the influence of grace, rather than slaves under the law.’
For four nights in March this year, Hanrahan Theatre resounded to the music, songs and dance of the popular Broadway stage musical, Grease. A joint production of Villanova & Loreto Colleges the musical entertained and charmed a capacity house each evening. Louis Hanrahan OSA, second Rector of Villanova and after whom the Hanrahan Theatre is named, would have smiled in quiet delight at the consummate skill and competence of the student musicians, performers, stage crew, technicians and staff from both Colleges.
The Queensland Catholic Schools & Colleges Music Festival celebrated its 22nd year in 2012. From a small gathering of 12 schools in 1991 presenting 12 hours of music, the festival has grown into a major event on the music calendar for many Queensland and interstate schools. This year’s festival involved more than 90 schools providing more than 300 music ensembles featuring in excess of 10,000 student performances. Two very successful visual art events in the College calendar this past year have been Celebr8 Art! and Villa Visions. Both events provided opportunity for students to display their artistic skills using a variety of media – pencil, charcoal, water colour, oils, clay, photography and digital media. Celebr8 Arts! showcases the work of our Year 8 students and Villa Visions showcases the artwork of all students across the College from Year 5 to 12.
Villanova enjoyed a very successful year in its inter-school cocurricular programme of competitions during 2012 - chess, debating and sport. While some teams achieved premierships, all participated and competed with energy, enthusiasm and determination exhibiting the best qualities of sportsmanship and fair play. Villanova achieved No 1 overall ranking in the AIC Cricket and Basketball Competition. Other notable achievements included the following premiership winning teams:
• Chess-Senior A
• Basketball – 1ST V, 3RD V, 14B, 14C (non AIC), 13A, 13C (non AIC)
• Cricket – 1ST XI, 15A, 15B, 14A, 14B, 13C (non AIC)
• Football – 1ST XI, 2ND XI, 15A, 15B
• Tennis – 1ST IV, 2ND IV, 14A, 14B, 13A
• Volleyball – 1ST VI, 14B
Of course, the number of premierships secured in and of itself presents a limited picture of the real accomplishments of our student sportsmen. Premierships do not convey, for instance, the number of boys in Junior, Middle & Senior Schools who achieved ‘personal bests’ in swimming, cross-country and track & field competitions. Nor do they convey the increased development in skill, fitness and teamwork achieved from season’s beginning to season’s end.
From the perspective of participation our co-curricular accomplishments throughout 2012 take on another dimension. The number of students from Years 5-12 who participated in various co-curricular activities at different times of the year is telling. In excess of 600 students participated in Cricket, Swimming and Volleyball, 900 students participated in Football, Rugby and Cross-Country, 500 students participated in Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field, and 120 students participated in Chess & Debating. The numbers speak for themselves.
I take this opportunity to thank all staff, parents, old boys and current students who took on roles of coach, manager, trainer and supporter … your participation and contribution is greatly valued and appreciated.
As I pen these few reflections for 2012, we await the academic and OP results of our Year 12 students. I have every confidence that they will account for themselves exceptionally well. To all of them I say congratulations and well done. To all our staff I say the same … thank you for another wonderful year of service and commitment. To our parents I say likewise … thank you for your sustained support for our College … and I look forward to seeing all again in 2013.
(Excerpts from the address delivered by Mr Dennis Harvey to the 2012 Seniors).
In his best-selling book Everything Belongs, author & Franciscan priest Richard Rohr tells us that our first job in life is to see clearly and accurately who we are; our second job is to act on it. Early this year, as the Senior Class of 2012, you began to see with great clarity who you are, and who you were becoming. From that moment you began acting on it; you provided for us the College community a model of student leadership, service and commitment that was shaped by three of the very best Augustinian traditions - warm friendship, generous hospitality and good humour. On behalf of the College, I thank you most sincerely.
Rohr goes on to say that:
“The most courageous thing we will ever do is to bear humbly, the mystery of our own reality. That is each person’s cross … all we can give back to God is what God has given us … nothing more, nothing less”.
As the Senior Class of 2012 you have succeeded in giving back to the College community the very same gifts and graces which your parents have sought to nurture in you since birth, and which your teachers have sought to encourage and develop in you throughout your days at Villa. You accomplished this while demonstrating passion and pride in your school and graciousness and humility in yourselves. And so once again gentlemen I say congratulations … and thank you. For some of you, this evening marks the culmination of 8 years schooling at Villa. For others it is less. For some this evening’s celebration marks the end of your family’s formal association with the College because you are the youngest, or perhaps only, son in your family. For others it marks but a moment in a continuing journey for your family, because you have younger brothers following in your footsteps. Whichever group you belong to, I invite you now to cast your mind’s eye back over your time here at Villa. What are the memories that come immediately to mind for you? In some unique and mysterious way I expect they are the moments and events that have also become part of a memory that is now shared with others.
Tonight, we can ask what marks are the Senior Class of 2012 leaving in the shared memory of their Alma Mater?
Mr Dennis Harvey Ms Juanita Jacobs, Year 12 Coordinator Year 12 Leaders Nicholas Pavouris, Jonathon Wyvill, Ben Ellis and Joseph Potter with next year’s College Leaders Nicholas DiSavia, Bryce Heaton and Chris Paterson Mr Steve Bremner, Head of Senior School Mr Harvey, Mr Steve Rouhliadeff, Ms Juanita Jacobs, Xavier Vasta and Jim Tarbit Donna Finnimore and son Sean celebrate the 1st XI Premiership earlier in the yearThe memories which College Captain Jonathon Wyvill, recalled during his toast to the College two nights ago at the Senior Formal are wonderful marks in your collective memory, I suggest. I have no doubt that, when you gather as Old Boys in years to come, there will be no shortage of memories to look back on … an array of Open sporting premierships, music accomplishments and awards, and ministry achievements in your Senior year the like of which I doubt we have witnessed at Villa for a long, long time.
There are three ‘moments’ that will always and forever mark the Senior Class of 2012 as a special breed of young men, in my memory. One is of a group of four senior students and two staff members who, with the support of family, friends and their school, undertook the physically arduous and emotionally demanding Kokoda Challenge in the Gold Coast hinterland in July this year. Another ‘moment’ is that of a group of four senior students who, on behalf of the Student Council, had an idea for enhancing the newly established Senior School Precinct by introducing the College colours of green and gold and our signature abbreviation - VNC. And the third is this one … a substantial number of Senior Class of 2012 standing on this very stage leading a group of Villa students of all ages in our College anthem during a tense time-out in the closing stages of 1st V Basketball Team’s 2-goal victory over SPC only three short weeks ago to secure the premiership.
Why is it, I wonder, that these ‘moments’, and not others, have left their mark in my memory. I don’t think it’s simply because of the calibre and quality of the individuals involved … as impressive and as inspiring as each is. I don’t think it’s simply because of the grandeur of the accomplishments themselves … as astounding as completing a 96km non-stop cross-country trek through day and night, hill and valley, sunshine and rain, in just over 21 hours is! Or as demanding as the dedication and commitment to training that’s needed in order to secure a basketball premiership!
No … I think those ‘moments’ have marked my memory because they represent and symbolise to me something that I believe the Senior Class of 2012 have demonstrated for us in their journey as young men. Nothing of real and lasting value in life is ever achieved: without a shared vision & belief, without purposeful planning & preparation, without exemplary execution & evaluation and, most important of all, without constant collaboration & companionship. Perhaps St Augustine said it more simply and far more elegantly when he wrote:
“Being faithful in minor things is always a major undertaking.”
We all know that “being faithful in minor things” is much easier when we experience the love and support of others. As the Senior Class of 2012 you have, on numerous occassions throughout the year, readily acknowledged that your accomplishments have not simply been of your own making … they are also the result of the unrelenting support of family, friends and teachers along the way. This evening, on your behalf,
I wish formally to acknowledge the support and love which your parents and families have provided to you and which, as a parent myself, I know never ends!.
I wish also to acknowledge and thank your teachers, and the College’s support staff, many of whom are here tonight. We are profoundly fortunate to have at Villa the staff we do … and I am especially grateful to each and every one of them for the very Augustinian way in which they have placed their lived experience and earned wisdom at your disposal throughout your time at Villa.
From tonight gentlemen you are no longer students of Villanova College. Tonight you graduate to the ranks of Villanova Old Boys. And while you have left your mark on us, well may you ask what mark has your Alma Mater left on you? It is my firm and confident belief that come sunrise tomorrow, and every day after that, the education and love which you have received from your family & friends and which we at Villa have endeavoured to support and extend, will nourish and sustain your engagement in the far larger and much more demanding school into which you are about to enrol – The School of Life.
Towards the end of the 4th century, in completing his Commentary on the Psalms, St Augustine wrote:
“How much wealth is stored within each one of us!
But what use is this wealth to us, if we do not investigate it?”
It is my hope and prayer that, as you engage The School of Life, the Augustinian education which you have received at Villa will stand you in good stead as you continue to search and investigate your wealth stored within; and once discovered, you will share that wealth unhesitatingly with others. For then and only then, will it be truly possible for us all to be “of one mind and heart on the way to God”.
May our loving God bless & keep you safe, ready to experience fully the events of your life, and may our patron St Thomas of Villanova watch over you and preserve in you the capacity to remember always that … Vincit Veritas!
Villanovan of the Year, Joseph PotterFor the College Council, as for the rest of the Villanova community, the highlight of 2012 was completion of the major building project. The blessing and opening of the Fr Michael Morahan Staff Centre, Veritas Building and Senior School precinct on the feast of St Rita (22nd May) marked the culmination of the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan and College Master Plan. This landmark occasion brought to tangible fruition the ‘three schools one college’ concept, which had been the vision of the previous Rector, Fr Mike Morahan that the Council had wholeheartedly embraced. On behalf of the College, the Council also welcomed a visit from Mr Kevin Rudd on 1st June to formally open the Junior School refurbishments to the Lower Library, O’Donnell Building, Junior School Office and Junior School Precinct, all of which were funded through the Commonwealth ‘Building Education Revolution’.
Completion of the major building works also signalled commencement of strategic renewal which will deliver a new Strategic Plan and Master Plan for the 2013-2017period. The Council established a Strategic Renewal Taskforce and a consultation draft of the Strategic Plan will be presented to the Villanova Community in early 2013.
Early in the year the Council received formal advice from the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board that the College had successfully demonstrated that it is meeting the requirements for accreditation as assessed through the five year cyclical review in late 2011. This announcement was followed up with a courtesy visit from representatives of the Board.
During 2012, the Council undertook a formative review of Principal which resulted in the establishment of several key performance indicators which will form the basis of the Principal’s summative review in late 2013.
At the Annual General Meeting of the College Council, the Augustinian Provincial, Fr Tony Banks OSA, announced some changes to the composition of the College Council.
Subsequently outgoing Directors – Ms Joan Bremner, Mr Graeme George, Mr Steve Rouhliadeff - were farewelled and the Council welcomed new Directors: Ms Donna McMahon, Mr Geoffrey Egert, Mr Steve Bremner and Mr Nick Simpson. These joined the existing Council: Dr Teresa Lynne (Chair), Mr Peter Geraghty (Deputy Chair), Fr Dave Austin OSA, Fr Laurie Mooney OSA, Fr Brian Buckley OSA, Mr Dennis Harvey (Principal), Ms Lyn Welch and Mr Bob Peacock. Council meetings are also attended by Ms Donna Foxwell (College Business Manager & Company Secretary) and Ms Amanda Waterson (Minutes Secretary).
The Council is pleased to report that Villanova continues to enjoy a solid financial position with a strong enrolments pipeline and by all accounts, an enviable reputation as an excellent school.
2012 was a wonderful year for the school and the Villanova P&F. We had the successful return of the International Carnival and the continued success of both the Mothers and Fathers Nights, which were well attended and enjoyed by all. New on our social calendar was the Villanova Ball which is set to become an institution at the school. All of these events bring together our wonderful Villanovan community and celebrate the Augustine spirit. The success and enjoyment of all our functions are only possible through the selfless commitment of parents and students. On behalf of the P&F, I wish to thank everyone involved for their efforts this year and look forward to bigger and better things in 2013.

Mr Peter Geraghty, Acting Chair of Villanova College Council, Mr Dennis Harvey and Fr Pete Wieneke OSA are seated on stage. Upper LibrarySt Thomas of Villanova, an Augustinian priest after whom the College is named, began his career as an academic and university lecturer but is most remembered for his generous and dedicated way of life. In fact it was he who said, “The gifts and graces we receive are not for ourselves alone.” St Thomas challenged us to use our talents for the service of others, and in doing so we become more fulfilled ourselves.
This ability of our Senior students to use their talents and abilities while being guided by our teaching staff have led to the achievement of some excellent results in classes this year across all subjects. Our students have also been awarded various levels of distinction in a range of academic competitions outside the College in Chemistry, Mathematics, Business Organization and Management, Social Sciences, Music and the Arts. This year has also seen a large number of students involved in Vocational Education training including traineeships and school based apprenticeships.
Throughout the year, the Seniors have worked positively with their fellow students by supporting one another in their learning and rising to the challenge of Senior study. We are all well aware of the importance of performing well on the Queensland Core Skills Test held in August. We are hoping that this years’ Senior class will fulfill their potential and match or even surpass the outstanding achievements of past Senior groups.
In our 64th year, Villanova history continues to be written by our senior students. This year we combined the outstanding music faculties of Villanova and Loreto to produce Celtic Storm. The key roles were fulfilled by a mixture of boys from Years 10-12. Many other Senior School students were involved backstage, making sure that everything ran smoothly.
Our Senior Musicians continue to share their enormous talents for the benefit of all in the community. We have seen the boys in our various ensembles grow and mature into fine musicians. Our music students have truly risen to each challenge and have represented the College with great professionalism. The boys have also relished the opportunity to work with phenomenally talented professional musicians and many acknowledged it has been the chance of a lifetime.
Such experiences provide our students with invaluable lessons in teaching them how to work together in groups, learn the virtue of persistence, following through on commitments and being generous enough to give up their free time for the benefit of others.
As we journey through life, writing our own history and reaching personal milestones we form our character. The Greek philosopher and intellectual, Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do.” The character of those boys who involve themselves in the various Ministry groups is evident through their generous acts of selflessness. Again in 2012 we had a group of senior students raising funds, organizing raffles, and facilitating the collection and distribution of Easter hampers to families in the local area who have been identified by our local parishes and SVDP as families in need of such assistance. Many recipients were immigrants and refugee families from war torn countries. Other students assisted in fundraising to contribute to the National Winter Blanket Appeal as well as toys and cash raised to assist with the National SVDP Christmas Appeal. A number of other students prepared, organized and worked hard to ensure our annual AID Days continue to raise awareness
and much needed funds to maintain our education Scholarships for poor children in the Philippines. The Student Council successfully raised thousands of dollars for various charities and organizations; YCS continued to promote friendship and community with the Junior school students through regular visits at lunch time.
Boys who willingly give of their time and give of their talents to work at the service of the community listen to their inner moral compass. It is that inner conscience or integrity of character where we put the needs of others before ourselves.
History has continued to be written in the sporting achievements in 2012. If we want to measure success by hard work, commitment to their sport and how our Seniors have used their gifts not just for themselves but for the benefit of the Villanova community then our athletes have been successful. Our senior students have demonstrated sportsmanship, character, and persistence throughout the year. Congratulations to all the Senior School teams on their AIC Premierships this year. There is little doubt that the young men from Villa who wear the green and gold, do so with pride and commitment.
It would be remiss of me if I did not mention the contribution of our wonderful staff who contribute to the Senior School journey. Many staff have given of their time above and beyond ‘the call of duty’. St Augustine wrote, “essence of teaching is example”. Our staff lead by example in their commitment to their work, their interest in the well being of their students and their genuine care and concern of the Senior School boys. One unique aspect about Villanova is the attempt to build relationships between staff, students and parents. This was most evident by the feeling at the Staff Senior Banquet earlier in the year and the number of staff who attended the formal and Senior graduation.
I especially thank Jonathon Wyvill, Ben Ellis, Joseph Potter and Nicholas Pavouris for their exceptional student leadership of the College in 2012. Their selfless ability to serve the community, while dedicating themselves to the academic, sporting and musical aspects of the College will be long remembered.
I wish to offer a special thanks to the members of the Senior School Pastoral Care Team: Mr Sean O’Neill, Mr Peter Meecham & Mrs Juanita Jacobs – our Year Level Coodinators; Mr Adrian Hellwig, our Pastoral Care Worker and Counsellor; and Mr Tass Sakellariou our school psychologist, for their support and care for the boys throughout the year.
Finally, thank you to all the Senior School students and parents who make Villa a wonderful and unique place of teaching and learning. I look forward to building on the history-making events of 2012, as we all develop our own gifts and graces in 2013.

At the beginning of this year, the leadership team of 2012 put forth a vision to their peers; a vision which would encompass achievement, and a vision which would ultimately build upon the legacy left by our predecessors. It is with great pleasure that I affirm that what we envisioned for this year has become a reality. Through the application of the Augustinian values such as love, humility, freedom, community, and friendship, we were able to reform and define what Villanova would be.
Continuing on with past traditions, ministry at Villanova has remained ever so prominent, with numerous programmes running all year round. For years, Villanova has supported those within our local community and provided funding and goods to those who are less fortunate. This year saw the launch of the Villa Miracles programme, where through various fundraisers, the students of Villanova, with additional support from the students at Loreto, raised over a total of $5,000 for both the Mater Children’s and Royal Children’s hospitals in Brisbane. Since 1992, AFAS has provided scholarship funding for secondary school students in the Philippines. In 2012, the members of AFAS raised over $11,000 which will be generously donated towards funding what will be over 100 individual scholarships to date.
Not only has Villanova proudly stated its prominence within the community for its generosity, but this year the college has defined its standing within the sporting arena as well. In total, five of the seven first grade sporting teams have earned themselves glory by winning premierships for their respective sports. Full sporting results are published elsewhere in this magazine.
But it is to the credit of our teachers and staff for their sharing of knowledge and guidance that will define our success in life, and for this we offer our gratitude and thanks. Our teachers make an enormous personal commitment to us as individuals. I speak on behalf of the whole student body in offering my appreciation to our teachers.
In conclusion, I quote Saint Augustine: “To seek the highest good is to live well.” Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it, instead, be your own man.

Jonathon Wyvill Jonathon, Academic MassCapitalising on the successes of past College Student Councils, the 2012 Villanova Student Council has, we believe, successfully continued on this path of service and innovation. The collaboration of minds in the 2012 council has reflected not only the thoughts of the staff and students but the wider Villanovan community. The 2012 Student Council, the largest in the council’s 38-year history, has undoubtedly served with both honour and distinction.
The year began with the election of council members from Years 7 to 12. The number of Council places was expanded this year in an effort to more accurately address to the needs of the Student Body. I would like to thank our Secretary Chris Barnewall, our Treasurer Keegan Nash and our Vice-President Andrew Mylonas for their support and commitment throughout the year. Work began early in the year with the purchase of new video cameras and the donation of funds to YCS for garden projects in the Junior School. In Term 1 we also reintroduced the Villanova College Student Council NRL Tipping competition with an increased prize pool of $100 awarded to first place, $50 to second place and $25 to third place. Later in the year the Council also continued the tradition of awarding a student prize for the Villa Visions art show, with a prize of $150 on offer. The Council also ran a Futsal Competition for Senior School students in term 2 which once again saw Crane house take victory. The Student Council covered all expenses in the College’s newest ministry, Villa Miracles, which has been a great success. However, it is through the organisation and implementation of the Veritas Beautification project which the council is most proud. The Veritas stair (pictured on the page) project was the council’s largest endeavour, designed to lift and promote school pride and respect. The design and planning process took several months to formulate before being implemented over the third term holidays. The stairs act as a constant reminder of the spirit we share in our school. The council also continued with new ideas
posting trivia and jokes of the day through term 2 and 3 in the daily morning notices which allowed pastoral groups to test their knowledge and share a laugh. The council has also planned for future Councils by creating house logos and designing badges ready for 2013.
It has indeed been an honour to serve the College as Student Council President this year. I have been fortunate enough to lead so many enthusiastic senior members, and I hope the same will continue as the younger grades progress in the Council. Additionally, I would like to thank Ms. Neehouse and Ms. Henry for their untiring support throughout the year. Lastly, I wish the incoming Student Council President, Nicholas DiSavia, the best of luck for 2013.

In the late 1970’s, he taught in the Villanova Primary School and was Chaplain to the Primary School in the 1980’s. During the 1980’s and 1990’s, Fr John was also Chaplain to the Villa Old Boys Association.
Fr John had what could comfortably be called an army of friends. He celebrated hundreds of weddings and funerals and had the skill, empathy and humility to make each and every one memorable. He was also blessed with a large and loving extended family.
Fr John died peacefully at Bribie Island on his 83rd birthday.
On this beautiful Tuesday morning, invited guests, parents, friends of Villanova, staff and students assembled to witness and enjoy the official opening of our new splendid Michael Morahan Staff Centre & Veritas Building. In his eloquent address, Prior Provincial Fr Tony Banks OSA took the receptive audience through a history of Villanova College: not a chronological listing of Villanova’s buildings but a look at the soul of Villanova“Community became enfleshed and, like the Jesus of the gospel, pitched its tent here in our midst”.
Fr Tony explained how each new building over the past 60 years reflected the times and ideals of their eras: the practicality of Cascia, the simplicity of the chapel, the architecture and creativity of our library, our Augustine Centre and our Goold Building. And now we have the Veritas Building & Michael Morahan Staff Centre which in Fr Tony’s superbly chosen words are “buildings crafted out of love from generations who pass on this great heritage and tradition to you, the present staff and students of Villanova”.
Current Principal, Mr Dennis Harvey, concluded the opening ceremony by thanking all who had contributed to the day’s proceedings but especially those who had visioned, planned, designed and constructed these wonderful new buildings.
Echoing Fr Tony’s sentiments, Mr Harvey quoted these words of Founding Rector, Fr Ben O’Donnell OSA “the real monuments are to be found in the hearts and minds of the thousands of students who have passed through these halls… monuments of truth and love, of honour and friendship”.
The Hon Mr Kevin Rudd MP, Federal Member for Griffith, addressed the College Community in Term 2 at the Blessing and Opening of the Refurbished Junior School library, classrooms and the new Junior School Recreation Precinct.

Editor’s note:
The apparent imbalance of the number of students in some Year 10 classes is the result of a timetabling issue on the day the class photos were taken. Some students were not available at the time their class picture was taken and these boys were photographed in subsequent classes.
In line with our Middle School core values of Respect, Consideration and Participation all students were called upon at the start of the year to commit the necessary focus and energy to all areas of their life at Villa. For the overwhelming majority of boys, this commitment was rewarded with outstanding academic, sporting and cultural success.
Early in February Year 8 students embarked on their first 2012 adventure- a camp at Dicky Beach, Caloundra. Activities including mountain biking, surf-awareness training and canoeing were enjoyed by all. Special thanks go to coordinator Mr Matt McGrath and to all the staff who gave generously of their time to attend.
In Term Two our Year 7 students, under the coordination of Mr Stephen Rouhliadeff, travelled to Mapleton for their yearly camp. Activities enjoyed were canoeing, the flying-fox, bush-walking, possum-glider swinging and the annual game of ultimate frisbee. Thank you to all the teachers for their efforts on the camp; and to the caring, selfless and respectful cohort of Year 7 students who made the camp the fun and success it was. Our Year 9 camp was held in northern NSW. Sleeping in swags, preparing and cooking over camp-fires with activities dependent on effective communication and teamwork, the four-day-long experience was designed to develop and strengthen the leadership skills. Our Middle School leaders approached each task with great maturity and cooperation. Thanks to Mr Peter Simpson for his coordination and again to all the staff for so generously giving their time to be with the boys.

The Year 9 students certainly used the leadership, communication and teamwork skills developed on camp (in conjunction with their Personal Development lessons) as the year progressed. Opportunities presented themselves and the Year 9 students never failed to step up to the mark. I personally would like to thank the elected House representatives: Douglas Caltabiano, Chris Martin, Harry Heenan, Jonah Rhodes, Jack Rolls, Andrew Stefanou, Louis Cassidy and Emmanuel Alexion for their efforts throughout the year. I congratulate all the Year 9 students on their journey through Middle School and wish you all the best as you move into our Senior School.
2012 witnessed times of disappointment, sadness, reflection, celebration and fun. Each student inside and outside the classroom undoubtedly encountered challenges and, hopefully, each was able to use the support of teachers, counsellors and peers - together with our much celebrated Villanovan attributes of determination, focus and positivity to reach their goals. I do not doubt that impressive growth has occurred both academically, socially and emotionally for each of the boys, and I wish them all the best for 2013.
On behalf of the boys, I would like to thank the academic and support staff who have made the year so successful. I especially thank the Middle School Year Level Coordinators and Mr Tass Sakellariou and Mr Adrian Hellwig for their ongoing support of the pastoral care programme. I also thank the Middle School’s Subject Area Coordinators: Ms Maureen O’Dwyer, Mr Nick Simpson and Ms Shannon Edmonds for their outstanding service throughout the year. The tireless efforts of all our staff help to ensure the Middle School’s curriculum and pedagogy are not only exceptional but also challenging and engaging for our boys. Their passion for their vocation and love for the students is abundantly evident.
Finally, on behalf of the Middle School Pastoral Care Team and all the staff I would like to personally thank the parents for their support throughout the year, and we look forward to continuing to work with you and your sons in 2013.

Each year is a frenetic journey and 2012 was no exception. Once again the quintessence of the Junior School was the strength of community. This community was led by a team of enthusiastic and dedicated staff who provided a breadth of learning opportunities across all areas of the curriculum that allowed the boys to realise and celebrate their talents in a variety of forums.
Many events on the calendar served to provide a perfect medium for all members of the Junior School to experience a sense of camaraderie and goodwill. Grandparents Day, the International Carnival, Aid Day, Year 6 Mother-Son Evening, Year 5 Father’s Day breakfast, Years 5-7 disco were some of the highlights throughout the year, with the pinnacle being the opening of the Veritas Building on May 22nd . The beginning of 2012 saw the last remnants of the building project completed with new desks and chairs arriving just before we greeted the new Year 5 students. The Year 5 boys’ feet only touched the ground briefly before they headed to the Byron Bay hinterland for their annual camp in weeks two and three. Over the three days the newest Villanovans became immersed in the College’s culture under the guidance of some Year 11 leaders. It was no surprise that on their return the Year 5 boys stood proudly stand arm in arm to recite the College war cry in full voice after every cricket match on Saturday morning.
The Year 6 boys headed off to Elanda Point towards the end of Term One for what promised to be a camp packed with fantastic activities. Unfortunately they weren’t so lucky with the weather with the first camp being cut short by a day because of the inclement weather. They only just managed to escape before being trapped by the rising water that circled the camp and surrounding areas. Subsequently, the second camp was postponed until the middle of Term Three.
The Year 6 boys lead by example from the outset. Under the guidance of the Year 6 teachers, the class leaders organised a variety of activities including touch football, handball and basketball competitions during the recess breaks. They also unveiled some unexpected talent with the Villa Masterchef competition. It was a huge success and one that put a few extra centimetres around the waistlines of some teachers who were lucky enough to be selected as judges.
Sport was high on the agenda for the majority of the boys and throughout the year we experienced tremendous success. The skill development and teamwork displayed by the boys improved noticeably throughout each of the seasons and the number of victories recorded was also very pleasing. Our footballers lead the way again in both Years Five and Six with outstanding success enjoyed by all teams. Our CIC Athletics coaching programme paid dividends with the team placing fourth in purple division which is their best ever result. Many fine performances were also recorded in cricket, swimming, rugby, cross-country, tennis and basketball. Our Tournament of the Minds teams also achieved phenomenal success, with our Maths and Engineering team being crowned Australian Champions for the first time ever.
It must have been the special family connection amongst the team that held them in good stead during the national finals that were held in Perth.
The Arts were once again outstanding with many of the ensembles being awarded gold or silver medals at the QCMF held in mid-August. In addition, they were greeted with resounding applause and praise after their performances in a variety of concerts held throughout the year.
At times I wondered with the myriad of additional activities that are on offer at Villa that the boys and staff would have sufficient time to focus on learning and teaching. 2012 presented a number of new challenges with the introduction of the new Mathematics and Science syllabuses. It was a sharp learning curve for many of the Year 5 boys in particular, and with the assistance of the teaching staff they adjusted well to the new expectations. Our NAPLAN results were once again excellent placing us above the state and national benchmarks in all areas apart from writing where we fell just below the national level. In addition, many of the boys took the opportunity to participate in Mathematics, Science, Computer and Writing competitions held throughout the year with some experiencing fantastic success. Thanks to the many parents who took on extra roles throughout the year, from coaching or managing sporting teams to volunteering for the tuckshop or assisting in the classroom; your work is very much appreciated. Thanks also to the talented Junior School staff who generously go above and beyond their normal duties to provide a wonderful education for the boys in their care.
For those leaving our community at the end of 2012, I wish you well in your future endeavours and look forward to hearing good news in the months and years to come. In what has been an extremely busy year, we can now take stock and reflect on what has gone before us before looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead in 2013.

VILLANOVA ENVIRONMENT GROUPBungy jumping and sky diving may all give you a crazy rush of adrenaline but they’re nothing compared to being locked in a room for three hours; solving open-ended challenges on the spot. The Tournament of Minds experience is one of high thrills and fast heart beats when you are asked to solve a compelling challenge in only three hours and perform your solution to an international audience.
This year we had the pleasure of taking not one, but two Villa TOM teams to compete at the Australasian Pacific Finals in Perth. We spent five jam packed days in Fremantle, and on day 4 we began competition at the University of Western Australia in Perth.
Our fabulous secondary team, (mentored by the fantastic Maria Mascadri), of Jonathan Shearman, Sajiv Stephen, Kurt Winter, Dylan Anderson, Dilan Fernando, Mark Knudsen and Jack Forster took out second place honours in the Applied Technology division. Next was the Primary Maths Engineering section. First place went to our magnificent Primary Team of Jacob Perrier, Josh Greenhalgh, Ronan Hughes, Lachlan Perrier, Julian Mascadri, Patrick Cummins, Harry Rieck and their mentor, Villanova Old Boy, Tom Underhill. A fantastic result!
I wish to convey my thanks to many folk. Firstly, to Mr Dennis Harvey and Doctor Irene Lategan, for their assistance in the early stages of planning. for Nationals and to Mr Ernie Civitarese and the P & F association for their generosity in helping the students with their expenses.
Finally, to every teacher who has encouraged the TOM kids at Villa this year, to all TOM parents and to every student who has participated, you can be sure you had a part in our National success!
Villanova College has a proud history of taking part in the Queensland Debating Union Competition. The competition consists of four preliminary rounds of debates held throughout Terms 1 and 2 and allows students to gain extensive speaking and debating experience. In 2012 we were able to field ten teams across Years Eight to Twelve. Once preliminary rounds were completed Villanova had five teams (8.1, 9.1, 10.2, 11.1 and our Senior A team) through to the final round debates. This was an outstanding result and a true testament to the hard work of the boys and coaches. I would like to commend all boys on the way they represented the College, demonstrating exemplary conduct throughout all debates. I would also like to thank the senior debaters many of whom have participated in Villanova debating since Grade Eight. These boys
have contributed positively to debating through their leadership and support of the other age groups, and I wish them the best of luck. Congratulations must go to all teams and coaches for a successful QDU season.

Former staff member Tracey Lenarduzzi has acted as Facilitator of Future Problem Solving groups for a number of years. However, special mention must be made of our Year 12 group of six students who have, since Year 8, won through to the National Finals. Congratulations are in order to: Ben Jarrett, Joseph Potter, Harry Collin, Nick Lenarduzzi, Dan Dennis and James Hulme. The students are expected to progress through a six step problem solving model to solve real life problems based in a futures’ scenario. They need to brainstorm problems, identify the underlying problem, explore possible solutions, develop judgement criteria, rank solutions based on criteria and develop an action plan for the best solution. They are marked
on technicality of expression, flexibility in thinking, creativity and originality of responses, fluency in thinking, research (amongst other things).
The qualifying problem already completed was on Human Rights and the topic for the National Final is Trade Barriers. The team will be in lock up for a two hour period during which they are given an unseen futuristic scenario and must complete their entire booklet continuing the six steps of the Problem Solving Model. One would have to agree this is very intensive!

The most telling aspect of ministry in 2012 was the way in which it has come to be seen as a central part of community life at the College. When College Captain Jonathon Wyvill spoke at the Formal he emphasised the legacy the Seniors of 2012 have left with regard to their ministry commitments. He spoke of the inauguration of the Cor Unum Shield – awarded to the house that does the best ministry and community building work, and he spoke of the exceptional fund-raising efforts for AFAS and for Villa Miracle (supporting local children’s hospitals through over seventy boys running Bridge to Brisbane).
There are other important reasons why ministry has positively impacted on College life this year. The team of teachers, students and parents who undertook the awesome quest to complete the Kokoda Challenge provided a model for what the Villanova community of parents, teachers and students can achieve when “of one mind and heart.” A moment at assembly when shivers ran down the spine was hearing parents as well as boys describe their deep insight into how such a demanding challenge can raise the horizons of families, and a whole community. The names of Olsen, Lubans, Finnimore, Orgill, Vasta and Barnewall have, I sense, opened up a pathway that will inspire other students for many years to come.
Another reason for the sense that it is natural to put our gifts and graces to service of others was the outstanding work done in the Middle School by the YAYM-ites (members of YAYM). Under the enthusiastic guidance of Maria Mascadri and Kath Underhill, a group of Year 7, 8 and 9 boys have utterly transformed what ministry looks like in Middle School, chiefly by establishing a fantastic relationship with the residents of Archbishop Duhig Nursing Home. One of the residents said, “We often wonder what is happening beyond our front gates…it means so much to us that you have been thinking about us.” In fact the YAYM boys have been specially invited back next year to join the celebration of the opening of the new building at the nursing home. The joy on the faces of the boys after their Christmas visit to the residents spoke of transformation: these boys are becoming who they are meant to be. In similar vein, the Junior School once again went out into the Prep and Grade 1 classes of various feeder schools in order to meet, read and share with the children just beginning their school journey. And once again it was the Junior School that threw the most wholehearted support into the campus-wide community ventures.
A good metaphor for the different ministry groups is that of a body made up of different limbs. The most inspiring events often occur when the whole body comes together on one initiative, college-wide. This unity of mind and heart was memorably seen when boys of all year levels from 8 – 12 came together to plan and advertise a far more ambitious Aid Day – something more like a mission day. A creative carnival was organised with a juicy edge, in so far that each house took on a different nationality theme for their quarter. And so for example Murray House was Australia, with sausage sizzle, lammos and Aussie burgers on sale, and activities like 2 Up and the suitably egalitarian Dunk-
the-Teacher. Meanwhile Goold were Asia, and foods like spring rolls and sushi were complemented by King of the Ring in sumo suits. The highlight of the day for most boys was the stirring Battle of the bands, organised by Lauries old boy Ben Lynam, with recent Villa old boys Willie Weightman and Tom Abbot as guest judges. All the proceeds from the day went to AFAS, and it was very satisfying that our own college spirit was enhanced by a strong focus on helping our sister schools. Celebration of the Mass of St Augustine at the start of the day pointed to the link –for those able to see – between the Eucharist and the College coming together as the body of Christ.
The way in which so many limbs of the body quietly and even secretly serve the raising each year of funds for sixteen AFAS scholars in the Philippines is also a sign of the ubiquity of college ministries. Take, for example, the way Villa Visions (College art show) seeks each year creatively to expand its capacity for generosity – this time with Jason Lane’s conjuring of a silent auction of staff masterpieces. Or take the quiet way Michael Burchett sold Darryl Lea chocolates to raise funds for AFAS. Of course it is very important that the end never justifies the means with student ministries: the manner of each group or event must be gracious, fun and humble. Very often the real poverty that is served lies within our own community – for example in lives made pointless by materialism, or in the quiet desperation of those boys who suffer the absence of loving parents. I see this service to our own boys especially at the Rosies Van, when the patrons help us to remember who we are, rather than to worry about face or status.
Likewise there is a tremendous service offered to the busy Year 12s when – through YCS and SVP – they simply stop to share time with the people who may not have the spotlight, like new Year 5s or the poor families of Coorparoo. A high point for YCS was when Matt Hallinan led the joint construction of a garden between Year 5 and Year 12 boys. Meanwhile SVP once again reminded us that we act as and with the church in reaching out with gifts at Easter and Christmas to the unregarded people on our doorstep.
Two events that started in 2011 occurred again in such a way as to confirm how quickly a new idea becomes a great tradition. Ask many Year 5s the highlight of their first year and they mention the Year 5 and Year 12 Breakfast. Meanwhile the FairGoAustralia touch footy competition this time welcomed 11 boys and 4 girls’ teams, including many of Brisbane’s indigenous boarders, as well as a team from Boys Town.
At the whole College masses we greet the Gospel singing “Ancient words ever new/ Changing me and changing you…” I like also to think that the actions of Jesus in touching the outcast and healing the sick are also words that we can humbly seek to copy and “listen” to. The change in individuals and communities is then tangible.

On Friday, October 12th, a strong crowd turned out to support the Villa Visions Art Exhibition in Goold Hall. With fine food and refreshments, music, prizes, raffles and voting initiatives, the evening was a great success and an enjoyable, interactive experience for all involved. Featuring teacher artworks for the very first time, and guest mentor artist Travis Hendrix exhibiting some of his own works, Villa Visions brought the student body, staff and broader professional art community together under one roof for one night only. Of special mention was the very high standard of Senior Visual Art on display on the Goold Hall stage. This year’s graduating Visual Art class received many positive comments from the patrons throughout the day and evening. The highest awards and prizes of the exhibition are listed below. Through the raffle, ‘red dot’ voting, and Teacher Art 4 AFAS Silent Auction, $1080 was raised for AFAS thanks to the generosity of the patrons. What an achievement! My thanks to the army of people who helped make Villa Visions a success this year. Thanks to Mrs Nikki Tervo (curator and mentor), Ms Alison Perrott, Mr Roland Camilleri, Mrs Margie Stevens, Mrs Nichole Rouliadeff, Travis Hendrix (guest judge and mentor artist), Mr Tony Rolls and the Hospitality students, Mrs Emma Dron and the Middle School Chamber Strings group, Mrs Trish McGrath, Mr Tony Hindmarsh, AFAS members, Ms Julianne Macpherson, Mr Harvey, Mrs Antonietta Neighbour and the Upper Library staff, Mrs Theresa Henry and the Student Council, and the hard-working students of Year 11 and Senior Visual Art. Thanks to School Art Supplies, Belisis Café, and the Camp Hill Hotel for generously donating prizes for the AFAS raffle, and to the teachers who exhibited work in our inaugural Teacher Art 4 AFAS silent auction. To the students who exhibited at Villa Visions this year, keep up the good work and congratulations on such an overwhelming display of creativity, expression and talent. We look forward in anticipation to next year’s exhibition.

Congratulations to the 16 Leads, 17 Band Members, 47 Chorus Members, 14 Dancers, 12 Crew Members and the many other students who volunteered to be ushers over the four nights. Each and every one of you contributed to making our combined Loreto/Villanova Musical an outstanding success.
Particular thanks must go to Mrs Helen Radvan (Executive Producer & Director, Loreto College) Mrs Anna Nielson (Musical Director, Loreto College), Mr Gavin Swanson (Producer, Loreto College), Ms Julianne Macpherson, Ms Justine Lawrence, Ms Belinda Ford, Mrs Emma Dron, Ms Julie Davis, Ms Judy Gordon, Mrs Kath Underhill, Dr Peter Morris, Mr Pat Zietsch, Mrs Mary-anne Bray, Mr Craig Atkinson (and his band of “Beauty School Dropouts”), the many parents of the cast and crew who assisted with bar, supper, hair, make-up and other tasks, industry professionals including the incredibly generous Mr Mark Radvan, and so many more who worked behind the scenes to support and showcase the incredible talents of our students in “Grease”. We are incredibly grateful for everyone’s contribution. Thank you to both school communities for purchasing every single ticket to the four shows in record time, which reassured us that we were guaranteed full houses to perform to. And finally a huge thank you to Mr Greg O’Neill, Mr Dennis Harvey, and Mrs Cheryl Hamilton (Principal, Loreto College) for allowing us to produce “Grease” with their generous support every step of the journey since August 2011.
We should all feel very proud of what we have achieved across nearly 7 months of preparation, and just 6 weeks of intensive blocking, and we are certain that “Grease” will be a lifelong memory for many of our students.
After Saturday night’s closing performance (and standing ovation!), Mrs Helen Radvan concluded by reciting the first stanza of lyrics from the theme song “Grease”. It is a fitting way to close this final update as these lyrics convey the central theme of this iconic coming-of-age musical about teenagers, school, rites of passage, love

We all love a good ‘hero’ story and popular culture is full of them! Whether it is good triumphing over evil, the human spirit being tested or justice being pursued, the identity of these heroes and their challenges has always intrigued society and audiences alike.
Without a doubt, the Senior Drama production is a quest that demands super human efforts and our 2012 Seniors have met the challenge with gusto! Villanova College is delighted to welcome back our resident artist, Brad Jennings from Cinematic Theatre Company, Markwell Presents. It is hard to believe that workshops with Brad began in February and after countless Wednesday afternoon sessions of improvisations, scriptwriting and many discussions, our show finally came together.
UNMASKED is a completely original production devised by the boys and the story reveals the true identities of the many different types of heroes that exist in our world. From the outrageous adventures of a superhero to the ultimate sacrifice paid by real heroes, UNMASKED will take you on an action packed journey in true cinematic style through fusing live dramatic action with stunning visual effects. A performance such as this one is not easy to realize on stage and there have been many heroes who have helped us on this journey. Firstly, thank you to Brad Jennings for his ‘super producer’ skills, artistic vision and professional support throughout this process. Secondly, we are grateful for the expertise of Mr Jason Lane, Co-ordinator of Arts (Middle/Senior School) whose work behind the scenes and design of the poster has given our show a cool, visual edge. We extend our thanks to Mr Pat Zietsch, Facilities Manager for his organisation of the technical support and Jayden Naidu and Stewart Williams for their assistance with the technical operation of the show. Finally, I’d like to thank the 2012 Senior Drama boys for their dedication and hard work throughout this process. Break a leg boys…you are all heroes!
Special activities were held on May 22nd as part of the celebrations to mark the opening and blessing of The Father Michael Morahan OSA Staff Centre & Veritas Building including a production involving our drama students and recently retired College Drama teacher Ms Sue Lawson and also an address by former Wallaby Brendan Cannon.
The VNC Music Performance Programme had an extremely busy and very successful year in 2012. As is tradition, the year commenced with our top senior ensembles joining forces with the girls from Loreto College for our Annual Combined Music Camp in Mapleton. The theme was The 50’s to tie in with our 2012 combined musical production of GREASE. The theme surfaced in everything from our guest clinicians’ repertoire choices to camp activities such as 220 boys and girls dancing the jive under the instruction of our guest dance instructors. For the second year of what has now become an annual event, our intermediate ensembles also participated in a music camp at Villanova which included a full Saturday of intense rehearsing, followed by a Sunday of R&R at MovieWorld.
The biannual combined musical, GREASE! was the major focus of term 1, with the mad dash of preparations for the singers, dancers, orchestra and stage crew to mount the production in seven short weeks. This year, the direction and musical direction were the responsibility of the Loreto College staff, with Villanova staff supporting, and it was yet another triumphant success!
After the musical finished, we resumed our normal ensemble rehearsal schedule, and set our sights toward hosting the 22nd annual QCMF festival. Villanova performances at the festival were again very highly regarded by adjudicators, parents and guests. The whole community came together like never before to host over 400 performing ensembles from 104 schools, including over 12,000 student performances! In addition to hosting, the Villa ensembles performed extremely well, earning an unprecedented number of Gold awards.
Throughout the year, the College ensembles had many opportunities to provide service to the community, playing at College masses and assemblies, along with local school fetes, funerals, corporate events and in community concerts. Many of our boys represented the College in the State Honours Ensembles Programme held at the Conservatorium, and our Irish Ensemble continued its rise to fame. In addition to many public performances, the Irish Ensemble recorded an album and also had the great honour of receiving an invitation to perform at the annual Woodford Folk Festival.
Every year, in term 4 the Villanova Music Department explodes with a flurry of concerts and events, and 2012 was no exception. The Strings at the Cathedral concert again filled the glorious St John’s Cathedral with amazing performances and a ‘standing room only’ audience. Our jazz bands performed at the Loreto Live and Wired Festival. Our ‘Big Event’ of the year was titled CELTIC STORM and featured the VNC Irish Ensembles with special professional guest Irish Band, the Barleyshakes along with the VNC and Loreto combined Symphony Orchestra and choirs. We also featured Irish dancers from the Crocker School of Irish Dance. The result was a highly-professional performance experience for over 150 students, and for 1000 audience members.
Of course, we closed the year with the traditional Senior Music Celebration & Dinner which gave us the opportunity to farewell our graduating musicians in style. We will miss our seniors, but are proud of their many concerts, tours and other musical achievements during their time here at Villanova.

Over the course of the year we have all been delighted to hear a multitude of great remarks about the way our students conducted themselves and the way they encouraged their teammates and even opposition players. These remarks were often from parents from other schools who e-mailed us or sought us out on game days to acknowledge the sportsmanship demonstrated by our students. It is a pleasure to hear these comments and it is a credit to the staff and parents who instill in the boys a sense of fairness and sportsmanship.
Villanova fielded a total of 61 teams throughout the year in 5 team sports and we could not have done so without the ongoing support of parents, who gave their time to coach and manage teams. We are fortunate to have committed parents who are more than happy to pass on their expertise and assist the boys. In total, parents were responsible for coaching 34 of those teams while the Villanova staff coached the other 27 teams. Clearly, without your commitment, we would not have been able to field all of these teams and given the boys who played an opportunity not just to participate but to improve their skills. Nine teams were undefeated in 2012, while twelve sides only lost one match. A pleasing result across the 5 team sports.
Training began well before school started in the January for our swimmers and in order to push them harder, training was held at Langlands pool with the AIC squad, rather than train at school. The training in a 50m pool paid off as Villa finished 5th Overall in the A grade carnival, only 7 points off 4th. Special mention needs to be made of Harrison Rieck, yr 7, who won five U12 division 1 races, which was a remarkable achievement. I would also like to congratulate the 5 boys who represented Villa at the QLD Primary School Invitational Relay Carnival- John Lowe, Nic Elsey, Roarke Ronan, Danyon Muller and Harrison Rieck. The boys won both the 4 x 50m freestyle final and the 4 x 50m medley final, breaking a 15yr record along the way.
All 14 CIC schools ran the Cross Country Championships, which was held at Villanova Park for the second time and Villanova finished 7th overall in very wet and muddy conditions. The U10’s finished 4th while the U11 team finished 5th and these results should give us a solid and competitive team for 2013.
Of the 98 cricket matches played by our 17 teams, we won 66 of them, almost 70%. The 7A and 5C sides went through undefeated, while the 7B, 7D Green, 6B, 6C, 6D Green, 6D Gold, 5B and 5D White sides only lost 1 match. This was an extremely successful season which was capped by Villanova being the winning club at the EDJCA 6-a-side fun day and having 15 boys across Yr 6 and 7 selected in Eastern Districts Rep sides.
Football continues to be our most successful CIC sport. The 12 teams who represented Villa each week won 38 matches and had 9 draws from 65 games. Five teams went through undefeated, 6B, 6C, 5A, 5B, 5C while the 6A team only lost 1 match. These results highlight the strength and depth of our football teams and the quality of the coaching.
Basketball isn’t far behind football as far as having a successful season is concerned. The 7B and 5B teams went through undefeated and all three of the ‘A’ teams played some excellent basketball to finish with a 17-4 combined win/loss record. Our teams only lost one round throughout the season against ACGS. Winning the other six rounds was a great achievement and highlights our depth and promising future.
The rugby season was tough for many of our sides and even though Villanova only won two rounds against Padua and SLC, we were very close against Nudgee College and Iona losing both rounds by only 1 match. The Year 5 and 6 sides went through the season winning just under 50% of their matches but showed a lot courage and determination and played their games right to the last minute. Win or lose our boys would gather in the centre of the field and give the war cry everything they had, demonstrating their school spirit. Having a 5-12 rugby pathway in place for 2013 will enhance the programme and hopefully create more success for our teams.
The top four tennis teams enjoyed a good season winning more than 50% of their matches. Hopefully more year six students will have a go as there were only five boys who signed up this year and all of them made up team 4. Thank you to Nicole Hitchcock and Gina Fogerty for their efforts in coaching the Year 5 and 6 boys and to all the parents who managed sides throughout the season. Four of our year 6 students, Noah Hitchcock, Gus Clegg, Tim Hazlewood and Lachlan McDonald competed for Villanova at a Primary Schools Teams Challenge. They won their pool division in the regional tie and will compete in the final at the Brisbane International next January.
Fourth place in the ‘A’ grade Athletics Carnival was an outstanding result for our team. The boys moved from 6th place after the field events into 4th with some outstanding performances. Nic Elsey won five events over the course of the two days in the U11 age group and two boys, Anthony Karamihas and Jacob Bragg broke CIC records in the U10 60m Hurdles and 1500m events respectively. The Under 10 age group finished second and the U11’s 4th and like cross country we are looking forward to next year’s Track and Field season with a lot of enthusiasm. Finally, I would like to thank all of the boys who have worn the ‘Green and Gold’ over the course of the year in CIC. Their participation in these sports has not only made Villanova more competitive but has enabled them to develop their skills and make more friends. The respect and gratitude that was shown to the coaches and managers did not go unnoticed. No matter the situation, state of play or result, Villanova students always played hard but with fairness and with a lot of school spirit.

6D GREEN RUGBY 5A RUGBY 5C RUGBY 5B RUGBYEarly morning starts and after school swim sessions were no problem for our crew of 42 squad members for our 5 week training period in 2012. With Mr Josh Russell and Mr Humberto Angerami as coaches and the AIC squad to set the example, we built up fitness levels, developed techniques and skills that saw CIC achieve its best ranking yet in the purple division – 5th .
Congratulations to our age champions James King (U13), Harrison Rieck (U12), Nick Elsey (U11), and Jeremy Goodsell (U10). Their extraordinary dedication to training, fitness, diet and attitude set the high standard for all other boys to follow, which indeed they did, with improvement from every boy in the squad. Particularly impressive was the second U11 relay team which smashed a 1st place only thirty minutes of being told they were in a race – now that’s the Villanovan spirit!
We would like to extend sincere thanks to the parents who dropped off, picked up, supplied food, cooked the bbq’s, and supported the management and coaches over the past six months. It’s only because of such effort from all fronts that good results were achieved.

Inset)It is with great pleasure that I write my first Director of Sport report for the Villanovan community. As a new member of staff this year, it has given me the opportunity to reflect upon how our new students are transitioned into the College. The feeling of anxiety and the hope that one is accepted, I would say, is felt by all new comers. It comes as no surprise to me that one’s participation and involvement in Sport, among other things, can break down the barriers and allow friendships and camaraderie to form within our College community.
Every year we greet a new intake of Year 5 and 8 students and our task begins to make these boys feel welcomed and to provide them with opportunities to grow and develop across many areas. The sporting programme at Villanova is not just about aiding a boy’s physical development – it is so much more. When a boy dons the green and gold for Villanova he learns the importance of being a valued member of a team and an equally important member of the Villanova community. It is where a boy learns about having pride in himself and in his school. Our students understand that hard work and good preparation are needed to succeed and at times they know that when the chips are down you have to dig deep and support each other in times of difficulty. The experiences which the boys receive from playing sport become life-long lessons which could be applied to many facets of their lives.
The overall culture of a College is formed by the participation, passion and involvement of all members in the community including parents, staff and students. There is no doubt that the building of this positive culture within a school takes many years to develop but unfortunately it can be destroyed in a short time. The Yr 12 cohort was reminded on many occasions that they have a responsibility to uphold the positive culture of the school and they had a responsibility to ensure that they hand over to the next generation of students a school which is in a better state from that which was given to them.
In my brief time at Villanova, I have witnessed many great contributions made by our students and their families, particularly in the area of sport. The grit and determination shown by our students each week as they prepare for competition has been very pleasing. Our success is largely due to the hard work put in at training over the entire season and has certainly been fundamental to Villanova’s success this year. The generosity of our parents, old boys and staff, who give freely of their time to coach, manage, umpire, score, serve at canteens, etc. is paramount to the success of our sports programme and I sincerely thank all those who have assisted in 2012.
I wish also to acknowledge the efforts of the ‘Villanova Sports Club’. This group is a parent driven body which meets regularly in order to provide support and assistance to the Villa sports programme. The support ranges from manning canteens for weekend fixtures, the organisation of fundraising events, providing funding for sports related projects and much more. After many years of service, the Club’s president and treasurer (listed respectively), Mr Simon Healy and his wife Mrs Julie Healy have decided to withdraw from these positions of office as their youngest son graduates from Villa. I thank them both
for their dedication, service and passion shown towards Villanova College over this time. Their contribution over the years has been outstanding.
There is no doubt that Villa had a very successful year in 2012. By our own unofficial rankings, Villa would be ranked in equal second place in AIC for 2012. Altogether our College secured 26 premierships throughout the year. Villanova were crowned the school aggregate Champions in Basketball and Cricket. Our School was only a few points away from securing the Tennis and Football aggregates too. Villanova won an astounding five 1st premierships in 2012.These include the 1st Cricket, 1st Volleyball, 1st Football, 1st Tennis and 1st Basketball titles. A more detailed report of each sport is available within this magazine. However, in my opinion, these results are nowhere near as important as the value the boys receive from participating in a team and enjoying all the benefits that playing sports has to offer. I would like to thank and acknowledge the great work accomplished by my colleagues in the Sport Office including Mr Tony Hindmarsh (AIC Co-ordinator), Mr Chris Everding (CIC Coordinator) and Mrs Erika Schofield (Sports Administrator). I again thank all those who have assisted throughout 2012 by taking on various roles within the sports programme. I hope we are able to have the same level of support from our community in 2013 to fill all positions required.
Finally, to the students who participated in school sport throughout the year, I was impressed by the way in which you have conducted yourselves as representatives of our College community, I offer you all my congratulations. Your success and sportsmanship has made this year a thoroughly enjoyable one.
MR CRAIG STARIHA Director of SportThe Paul Finnimore Memorial Shield for Sportsman of the Year award is given for success in sport, breadth of participation, and sportsmanlike attitude, the last criterion of which takes precedence over the other two.
(Extract from Mr Harvey’s Graduation night speech)
This year’s recipient of the award, Ben Davis, has displayed great dedication and commitment in all his sporting pursuits. He is admired and respected by his peers and looked up to by the younger members of the College Community. A gifted and talented leader as well as sportsman, this young man clothes himself in a garment of humility, ensuring that others are neither intimidated by his ability nor envious of his success. He is a genuine team player in the fullest sense of the word…always displaying the highest ideals of sportsmanlike conduct and behaviour. His commitment to Villanova sport is unquestionable, more often than not placing his beloved school ahead of national duties. During this, his Senior year, he has successfully juggled the academic rigours of Year 12 with representing Australia in Volleyball. He is the only student in recent AIC history to Captain two premiership-winning teams in the one year. I am very confident in saying that the man, after whom the Sportsman of the Year award is named, Paul Finnimore, would be thoroughly delighted with this year’s recipient of the College’s highest sporting award.

Participation in sport allows our boys to demonstrate pride in themselves, their mates and the College. Participation provides opportunities for students to further build character and a positive school culture. I often say to the students that as they pass through the College they will be given lots of opportunities to grow and develop in many areas. From time to time the College will ask students to give back. In future I hope that all students are able to help our College when needed.
I was extremely pleased with how our team conducted themselves and wore the uniform over the Championship. The atmosphere within the squad was very positive. It is something that the students really enjoyed. There were many outstanding performances on the day by many of our athletes However, congratulations go to Michael Criticos (Captain) and Nick Klaassen who were both selected as Villa’s ‘Best Athlete on Day’ at our presentations. Well done to all involved!

The annual AIC Cross Country Championships were held at Limestone Park, Ipswich, on Saturday July 28. The results were an outstanding demonstration of team performance and squad harmony.
Villa placed equal 4th on the day, up from 7th last year. Results from age groups were as follows: U/13 – 1st, U/14 – 5th, U/15 –2nd, U/16 – 7th, Open – 7th . Congratulations to the U/13 boys who won their age group convincingly in their first season in AIC. Every single Villa runner did himself, his coaches and parents proud on the day. Every runner finished the race with nothing left in the tank and almost every runner did a Limestone Park personal best time on the day. Some notable performances were as follows:
U/13 Jared Pascoe 2nd (Age Champion 2012), Callum Davies 3rd, Declan Carr 9th, Matt Porter 11th
U/14 Jack Rolls 2nd (Age Champion 2012), Harry Stokes 20th
U/15 Liam Boudin 8th (Age Champion 2012), Ben MacLean 12th, Connor Fountain 17th, Tom Spillane 19th
U/16 Will Stokes 18th (Age Champion 2012)
OPEN James Stephanos 20th (Age Champion 2012)
Thank you to Coach David Barton (Class of 2009), mentor Lok Seeto (Class of 2011), coach/coordinators Mr Brian Pascoe (staff) and parent Mr David Willems for getting the best out of the runners in 2012. Thank you also to Mr Craig Stariha, Mr Tony Hindmarsh and Mrs Erika Schofield for helping with logistics throughout the season, including the annual camp to Tamborine Mountain.
I await the arrival of the 2013 season with great anticipation. I would encourage as many Villa boys as possible to use Cross Country as a fitness platform to improve their stamina. Who knows, maybe we can reach 200 runners at a training session in 2013? Any parent who would like to gain some fitness and get involved is most welcome: the more the merrier!
Congratulations to ALL runners.

Football results were outstanding this year, with 4 premierships in AIC and 5 undefeated teams in CIC. Many other teams recorded only one loss or were placed second on the ladder in their respective age groups.
We had a fitting end to the season with a tremendous atmosphere at Villa Park for the last AIC game of the season. Our 1st XI Football side defeated St Patrick’s to secure the 2012 1st XI Premiership. Full credit must go to all members of the 1st XI team and the coaching staff of Mr Darren Thomas and Mr Claude Capelli and Manager Ms Justine Lawrence. It was very noticeable that all team members worked well as a team throughout the entire season. The individual skill that each player brought to the table was outstanding. These boys were able to gel as one unit to win all games played and were truly a pleasure to watch each week. The whole team is to be commended and on behalf of the College community I can say we are very proud of you all. Well done.
My sincere thanks to all involved: players, coaches, managers and parents.
1st XI - Coached by Mr Darren Thomas and Mr Claude Capelli, managed by Ms Justine Lawrence.

Although we had no undefeated teams or premierships this year, we did have an abundance of gutsy players who put their bodies on the line each week to produce the very best they could for their team and the College. Saturdays at Villa Park provided the expected spills, thrills and entertainment. My appreciation to the coaches and managers for their great efforts and of course, to all players, parents and supporters.

Congratulations and thank you to the AIC Swimming Squad for their performance during the season. Although our aggregate result this year may have been disappointing, it did not detract from the effort and personal best performances from each and every squad member. For many of the events, the boys were swimming 2 and 3 seconds better than their previous best times and many of them achieved their target times for the season that had been set on camp. Special mention goes to Michael Gaynor who was awarded the “swimmer of the meet” award for his 1st place in the 50m Freestyle. Also thank you to Angus Armstrong and Matthew Owens for their continued effort at training throughout the season. Unfortunately for Angus he was injured and not able to compete in the Championships.
Chris Barnewall and Will Hayes, our team captain and vice captain, gave personal best performances at their final AIC Championship. They led with distinction and their support of all the swimmers and staff was greatly appreciated. To all the staff and parents who assisted during the season, many thanks on behalf of the boys. The challenge is to get back into the water as soon as possible and rebuild our fitness and skills. Next season is looking even better.

U16 SWIMMING U13 SWIMMING U14 SWIMMINGOur tennis boys did us proud once again this year. The AIC tennis competition was extremely close between the top 3 schools (Villa being one of them), in fact, it has been the closest in the history of AIC. Villanova managed to secure 3rd place in the aggregate, only 1 point behind St Peters and Ashgrove who both shared 1st place honours.
As mentioned all season, every win and loss is important in such a competitive competition. I know some of our tennis players would be a little disappointed with the overall third placing, however, our boys should feel very proud of their efforts throughout the entire season. Well done!
