eptember is, for many of us, a month of change. It marks the end of the holidays, and the beginning of a new school year. It’s the end of summer, and the beginning of autumn. September reminds us that in life, beginnings and endings flow into each other. The poet TS Eliot wrote: “What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.”

The beginning and the end…

In our church of St Mary’s, and indeed in pretty much any church, if you look closely enough you’ll find in a window, on a kneeler, on a candle (pictured), on a hanging or carving, these two characters: AΩ Alpha and Omega, the first and the last letters of the Greek alphabet. Why are they there? They are a reminderbookfromwordssomeoftheofRevelation (the last book in the Bible): “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” For Christians, the letters AΩ are a reminder that Jesus is the beginning and the end, that he encompasses all our beginnings and endings, that the whole of our existence is lived enfolded in his love. For some of us, September may well be a month of significant change, of beginnings and endings. For others of us, it might be a month in which life runs on an even keel. But whatever befalls us, it may help us and reassure us to remember that all of our beginnings and endings are enfolded in the love of God who is the beginning and end of all things.

Of course, beginnings and endings aren’t limited to September; they are a constant feature of life. In church, we are regularly reminded of that as we celebrate the beginnings that baptism marks, and the endings that funerals commemorate.

his year, we celebrate 40 years of running in Barns Green. The first race took place in October 1982 and it is quite incredible that such a small village has kept this event going for 40 years. This year’s Run Barns Green will take place on Sunday 25th September. The Half Marathon will start at 10am and the 10km race will start at 10.20am. To celebrate the 40th anniversary, Run Barns Green has launched a new race this year. The Jennings Junior Jog will take place on the Village Green at 12.30pm on race day. The new race will give primary aged youngsters aged 4-11 the chance to compete in a 750-metre colour run with all those taking part getting a medal. The Jennings Junior Jog is named after longterm Chairman and Race Director of Run Barns Green, Vernon Jennings, who died earlier this year. Vernon put so much into the event and it was always his aim to create a new race for the youngsters and the Run Barns Green Committee are delighted that this will now come to fruition. The Jennings Junior Jog will take place just over two hours after the start of the Half Marathon and 10k races which follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Dragons Green, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. There is plenty of free car parking for runners and spectators and there will be a warm-up for all the runners before the race which will be done by one of Bluecoat Sports fitness instructors. There are highly visible race pacers taking part which enables runners to get help with running at their chosen pace and achieving the finish time that they aspire to. There will be bands and groups playing music at different points on the race routes to help keep all the runners motivated and at the end of the races all runners will receive a medal which this year, as part of Run Barns Green programme of greater sustainability will be made of wood.

The whole event is organised entirely by volunteers and raises a lot of money for charity and also makes donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who help with the staging of the race. Once again the official charity will be St Catherine’s Hospice, a wonderful local charity which has helped many people from the local area. On the Green itself there will be plenty of additional activity. We are holding a reception for people who have been involved in the event since its beginning and we are delighted that Alan Train who had the original idea for the race back in 1981 will be there. Platinum Ambulance Service will have a strong presence to help with any runners who suffer illness or injury, there are physiotherapists on hand to massage aching limbs. There will also be a number of different drinks and catering stalls as well as a funfair and plenty of music and entertainment for all the family.

Saturday 23rd July saw the return of the Six Bells, Billingshurst Charity Fun Day, raising much needed funds for The Midhurst Macmillan Service. The sun shone and it wasn’t long before the pub garden was full, there were stalls, barbecue, bouncy castle, face painting, sweets stall, candy floss, cakes, tombola, raffle, auction and a raffle to win a wheelbarrow full of drinks. The evening continued with live music. Kirsten, the pub’s Landlady was thrilled, saying, “Wow! Billingshurst, all I can say is thank you. It takes a lot of time and organisation to make a day like Saturday happen! I can’t say it’s been easy this year having had a lot going on both personally and with the pub. One of the things in the last year that stopped us in our tracks was my sister, Vicky, having skin cancer. It made today even more important. £2671.54 in one day was incredible. Imagine what we can do next year with no hiccups! Fingers crossed".

t’s an interesting question… with an interesting answer. It turns out that happiness is not a destination; it isn’t something to be achieved. Happiness is something that resides inside you. You can be happy wherever you are, right now. Define happiness for you. Happiness isn’t the same as pleasure. It isn’t a single Happinessemotion.requires you to go through the pain and struggles of life and deal with them like everyone else. How you react to pain and struggle defines your happiness. As you deal with and solve your own problems and those of others you actually become happier. More doesn’t mean happier. More money, a faster car and a bigger house won’t make you happier, because happiness comes from within. Beyond the financial security we need to provide a place to live, pay for essential services and food to eat, we don’t need a whole lot more. More is nice, but not essential for happiness. Find your thing. You’re not going to excel at most things in life but all of us have at least one thing we’re great at. It could be knitting, playing piano, working on classic cars, or making wooden bird houses, but find it, enjoy it, and make it yours. You don’t have to be world class, just good enough to give you pleasure. Find your values. Consciously think about your thoughts and feelings. Don’t stay in a job you hate to buy things you don’t need. Don’t hang out with the group of friends who drag you down when you can spend time with one or two who lift you up, and definitely don’t keep saying yes to things you don’t want to do. This isn’t a magic formula for happiness, but it’s a start. Happiness, like anything worthwhile takes practise. Be happy.

Time for Dementia

Ouch! A guide to ear-piercing

Helix. A helix piercing typically sits at the top of your ear cartilage. There’s plenty of room in this area, so double and triple helix piercings are quite common.

“Isn’t it all just jam and Jerusalem with a sprinkling of knitting thrown in for good measure?” That’s what we thought. But after going to a meeting to start the ball rolling to set up an evening ‘branch’ of the WI in Billingshurst, we were told “The WI is what you want it to be, for your members”. You don’t have to be retired either. We want women from all age groups to join together to share their skills, knowledge and most of all a good old chat over a cuppa.Ipersonally want somewhere where I can go once a month and not be ‘mummy’ and after the turbulence of the past few years, want to meet and socialise with women in the village. We need you to come and share your ideas for what you want this new and exciting opportunity for the WI to be. Whether that’s trying your hand at flower arranging or something more adventurous like rock climbing the choice is yours!

There is a small annual membership which covers activities during the monthly sessions.

The Time for Dementia project, supported by Alzheimer’s Society, pairs families affected by dementia with undergraduate students, helping to better educate them about life with dementia and the challenges that come with it. This autumn a new cohort of Brighton and Sussex Medical School medical students will be taking part and the Alzheimer’s Society are now seeking families in the area who would like the opportunity to make a difference to training health professionals.

Vertical lobe. If you have space for two earrings on your lobe, you could try a vertical lobe piercing, where two studs are stacked on top of each other. Upper lobe. This position, where the main lobe narrows into the outer curve, is ideal for small, intricate piercings.

Conch. A conch piercing refers to the middle section of the ear. An inner conch is when a stud is punctured right through the middle, and nestles in the inner curve, and an outer conch is where a hoop will start in the middle but hugs the outer edge of your ear. This is a little more painful than the other piercings mentioned so far. Industrial / Scaffold. An industrial (or scaffold) piercing requires two holes, both in the outer cartilage. They’re usually punctured diagonally opposite each other (but the angle is up to you) and linked together with a barbell. This is a little more painful again. Daith. A daith piercing sits through the most inner part of the ear’s cartilage. Some people find this piercing offers them relief from severe migraines. Rook. Just above the daith sits a ridge, which is referred to as a rook. Tragus and Anti-tragus. Sitting just above the ear canal, is the tragus and opposite sits the anti-tragus. Both are usually only big enough for one piercing. Snug. Sitting slightly above the anti-tragus is a piercing spot called the ‘snug’. Possibly named because of how snugly a small hoop hugs it.

Local families affected by dementia are being invited to take part in an award-winning programme, to help train the healthcare professionals of tomorrow and improve dementia care.

Louise Addison

Forward helix. A forward helix sits on the inner and top half of your ear cartilage, a couple of inches in and down from the temple. It can be a single stud or ring, as well as a series of piercings.

The Smell of Other People’s Houses Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock In keeping with the theme of smell this month, this is a beautiful Young Adult novel. The Smell of Other People’s Houses is actually a collection of deftly interwoven stories. The lives of teenagers in a small town are simply told, in sparing language with concise description, and highlight how the weighty issues of the world are experienced and processed every day by ordinary children. There are undercurrentsdarkflowingthroughtheback-stories, yet the overriding message is of hope, friendship, and community.Hitchcock’s descriptions of the Alaskan landscape are exquisite, and her handling of cultural and background issues sensitive. This is an emotional, yet never sentimental novel which observes how young people are shaped by the events happening around them. book reviewer Tash Donovan

firmlyAndreallypublishedawardItdiscoveredonlyitrecently.wonaFantasywhenitwasyetIcan’tcallitFantasy.althoughsetinthepastit’s not Historical Fiction either. In spite of the explicit subtitle, it isn’t Horror, nor is it a Murder Mystery. It’s one of those wonderful books which defies a Jean-Baptistegenre.

Grenouille is a peculiar boy who becomes a dangerous yet interesting man. He is born without any body odour. As his wet nurse states, “Babies always have a smell, some stink, but underneath it, there’s always a warm, cuddly smell that even a cold, heartless, child-hating woman such as I can appreciate.” But Grenouille lacks any kind of scent, which marks him out as different. Paradoxically his own sense of smell is perfect, the olfactory equivalent of the perfect pitch possessed by some musicians. He becomes obsessed with scent, particularly the aromas of Paris, and his dark curiosity about perfume is central to the plot. Grenouille knows he is not normal, and his obsession for the pursuit of a perfect fragrance leads him to commit his first murder, for the love of a young woman’s particular scent. Süskind perfectly dissociates Grenouille from the abhorrent acts he performs. On the one hand he never stops telling the reader directly how awful Grenouille is but at the same time, through Grenouille’s actions, the reader can’t help but become attached to this unusual protagonist. Grenouille is driven, constantly working towards his goal, then right at the peak of the story Süskind changes gear with jarring, dramatic effect, as the tale heads into a frenzied denouement.Ifeelthisis a novel readers will love it or hate. You will definitely not remain indifferent.

Billingshurst & District Lions Club is pleased to announce that in August they have now raised over three quarters of a million pounds, all through volunteers selling secondhand books for more than 20 years. As one member said, “That’s an awful lot of books.” The club send grateful thanks to all loyal supporters for their donated books and to those who come and buy them, without whom this would not be possible.

The venture first began selling books from a trestle table stall in Jengers Mead on a Saturday morning. Encouraged by its popularity, the club then sold books from various shops in the village as they became available between permanent occupants. This proved so successful that In 2002, the Club took the decision to lease a permanent shop in Jengers Mead, where it remains today. Inevitably, costs of running the shop have increased with fewer funds available for charitable causes. To try and maintain a reasonable level of income to continue supporting the local community in these increasingly difficult times, the club has reluctantly decided to make some changes and slight adjustments to the pricing.

From 1st August, hardbacks increased to £2 each and jigsaws £1.50 each, but paperbacks still remain at £1 each and children’s books at five for £1. Selected books will continue to be priced individually and displayed in the window. Due to lack of demand, DVDs, as with CDs earlier, can no longer be accepted, allowing more space devoted to books, which seem as popular as ever.

“It’s a real pleasure to come and browse through the fascinating range of books on display, discover new authors and books on all kinds of quirky subjects. Long may it continue.”

When Nanny’s tricycle’s battery died and a new one was £600, she decided she would go back to a bicycle (electric of course) and because there were three dogs in the family now, a dog trailer with the bicycle was clearly needed.

The dog trailer came first, from eBay. Nanny had to organise a courier and after a number of false starts it arrived, beautifully wrapped up. After 15 minutes, when all the packing tape was removed, it took another 30 to figure out how to assemble it. Nanny could see it would be great. Next came the bicycle itself, a lovely Raleigh Forge, for which Nanny had to organise another courier. This time it was more complex with many e-mails exchanged between her and the seller who was thankfully a very obliging man because it including dismantling the bike and putting it in a box. It duly arrived and Nanny and Grandad unpacked it. To their horror they we unable to reassemble it. It would be a job for the expert Dave the travelling bike man. He wasn’t available until the next week. So they had to wait, and so did the Meanwhiletrailer.Grandad said he’d like a bike too. So Nanny dutifully did the eBay thing again, and due to bidding on two items at the same time (so she wouldn’t miss out) she ended up with two! Dave came and checked all three bikes out and so Nanny was set. She tried the Raleigh, fell over and grazed her arm. She tried the other two but she couldn’t get her legs right. Dave changed the seat on the Raleigh and Nanny tried it again. She thought she’d got it right, lost her balance and fell off again, a bruised thigh and dignity this time. Nanny gave up the idea of a bike. The trailer awaited. After a few days of coming to her senses, she realised a mobility scooter was the way to go. On to eBay again, she found one which wasn’t too expensive in Southampton. Obviously too large to courier, they had to go and get it. That was another adventure, featuring Grandad grumbling big time. Nanny tried it a few times at home without falling off and pronounced it a success. They managed to get it on the trailer and down to the caravan at Selsey. After a few brief forays up and down the road, she put it on charge. But, sad to say, the batteries had died. She was told to try a local chappy, named Brian, who arrived on site within the hour. He looked at it and whisked it away for a few hours. When he came back, the mobility scooter (now renamed Veronica) was like new with a number of small repairs made and new batteries fitted. Nanny began to really like Veronica. It was time to try the dogs out with her. With Poppy in the basket, Magnus in a bag at the back and Heidi in front of Nanny, they liked Veronica too. The next time they went down to Selsey, they brought the dog trailer with them and Brian, after several visits, managed to modify Veronica’s bumper bar to attach the trailer. With both Heidi and Magnus in the trailer and little Poppy in the front basket they set off. It was a great success! Two of the adventures were on the back roads and now Veronica is covered in dust.Veronica was so handy and was certainly faster than walking and safer than the tricycle and bicycles. Nanny was so pleased she swallowed her pride. Veronica is now accepted as a fully fledged member of the gang on that small farm near Billingshurst.

Of all the activities that the Renegades get to experience – from canoeing to carpentry the one that has been a huge hit with the children has been Reptiles night, courtesy of Storrington herpetologist Drew Hicks 17-year-old Drew brought her collection of pythons and a bearded dragon for the children to see and to carefully handle under her watchful supervision. “It was a hot day so the reptiles were awake. Some of the more confident children, who were at ease with the creatures, helped those that were a bit unsure at first so that each child got to experience touching them. They were most surprised that the snakes, who are known for being slithery, are in fact warm and dry,” says Gareth Miller, Group Leader.“Drew was so knowledgeable and so generous with her time and her creatures. She told the children all about each of them in turn and how to care for them,” says Gareth. “At one point, Mooncakes, her Albino Granite Burmese python, which is nearly seven feet long, was spread out across the children. They loved it!” The Burmese python is one of the largest non-venemous species of snakes. Drew also showed the children how Pablo, the bearded dragon, feeds. “She put a number of live locusts on the table and the children watched, spellbound, while Pablo caught and ate the insects. It was amazing to see how quickly it could move if it wanted to,” laughs Gareth. Bearded dragons, or ‘beardies’, are one of the most popular lizards in captivity and are so named because the underside of their throats can turn black or gain weight if they feelThethreatened.othernon-venemous pythons were Princess, Lucifer and Lilith – all Royal (Ball) pythons. The name refers to its tendency to curl into a ball when stressed or frightened. They grow to a maximum of six feet. The Renegades is still in need of a home, if anyone can help. “Ideally, we are looking for an existing building with a good amount of external space that we can refurbish, or a field where we can put up a green, off-grid building. connection.Thistechnique has a number of advantages. All our browsing is carried out by the VPN server. No one can track our activity back to our computer. Governments, hackers and websites can only see the VPN server, and these don’t keep any records of who was using the system. Everything we do online instantly becomes fully encrypted. We can connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots without worrying somebodyaboutstealing our information.MostVPN systems allow connection to servers in different countries. It’s then possible to access websites and services as if you were based in that country. However, big organisations like Netflix invest a lot of money trying to stop people using VPN connections to access US shows from the UK. In countries where the Internet is censored, using a VPN can bypass the censorship and allow access the information from forbidden sites.VPN services cost a few pounds per month to rent. Sometimes internet security software offers the service as part of their package. So, if you use lots of public Wi-Fi networks it’s well worth the investment. If you’re worried about people tracking your online activity and building up a personal profile of your likes and dislikes, then VPN is the easy solution.

n a coffee shop the other day I took my phone out to catch-up on some e-mails. The customer Wi-Fi was free so of course I connected and started browsing the web. I glanced up at one point and all around me a number of people were busy doing the same thing. It suddenly struck me that everyone was on the same network, so how safe was my information? Then I wondered whether my home was really any safer. Any time we use the Internet for browsing, watching answeringvideos,e-mail, or any of our apps, our phone or computer has a digital conversation with other computers. If someone monitors this conversation, they will see what we’re looking at, who we’re talking to and, if the computer we’re talking to isn’t secure, our account details and passwords are vulnerable. Organisations make a lot of money from gathering this sort of information. It’s called Big Data. Think of those pop-up ads that seem to know exactly the sorts of things we like. So how can we stop the snoopers? Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a great solution. This works by using our Internet connection to securely connect us to a VPN server. Hackers can see we’ve made the connection but can’t see anything we’re doing. Our device tells the VPN server what we want to do, and it goes on to the Internet to do it for us. It then sends that information back to our device using this secure

Taking your cat to the vets

If you’re buying a new carrier it’s best to choose a plastic one as most can be taken apart quickly and easily which often allows your vet to carry out examinations without your cat needing to leave their comfy blanket.

Sophie Hall B.V.Sc., M.R.C.V.S.

There’s definitely something going on at home –they are talking about a holiday but keep mentioning kennels, which means one thing, we are not invited on this holiday, the cheek! They get to live it up stuffing their faces without us. Well, I can assure them it won’t be half as much fun with out a comedy duo of dogs tagging along! It’s been a long time since we went to the kennels but it’s actually very comfortable. We have a nice run and heated bedding area so it’s home from home really, but my nose will indeed be out of joint at being left behind, I will have a whole week of quiet reflection to plan my revenge for their little jaunt without us! We have new beds! Probably stemming from mum’s guilt about going away without us – I’m not letting that one drop for a while! The new beds are ‘orthopaedic’ according to mum, and she says they will help after we have had a hard day of exercise. Especially for me as I’m getting older – the absolute cheek! I’m middle aged not old and I’m in the prime of my life I’ll have her know! However, the new beds are very comfortable indeed, even Mav agrees for once!

hew! What a hot summer it’s been, I’m actually relieved it’s now September, even though mum is grumbling about the evenings getting darker so early, I think she still has a load of jobs to get done at the stables before winter sets in. I know she was getting annoyed with the ground being so hard she can’t get the fence posts in give it until Christmas and she’ll be moaning about the wet and the mud – it seems humans are never happy! Unlike us canines I love mud! It’s been so dry that our little stream has dried up, so mum has put out some shallow trays of water for the wildlife, she’s less than impressed when we go and tip them over! Mum is delighted to be able to use the stubble fields for our training; we really have to concentrate now as our training dummies are no longer just in straight lines but placed all around us. I try to cheat by grabbing the nearest one but mum makes me do the whole thing again properly, she’s a control freak really but if I let her have her own way she’s delighted with me and I get my dinner faster! Goody two shoes Mav of course is teacher’s pet; he just loves collecting those smelly things, when I’d rather be hunting mice in the barn. We have also started going to the common more again, we have to be careful during the summer as the area is renowned for adders and mum doesn’t want to risk us getting bitten, but now the weather is cooling down and bird nesting season is over we get to hunt the bracken once again, which is amazing fun and just like being in a jungle!

Cats are very sweet but can sometimes be special creatures that like things in their lives to be a certain way and making a trip to the vets rarely makes it into their diary. It’s no wonder that once at the vets some cats are just not pleased to see us. Small steps at home can help ease the stress of getting in a carrier and often the car, whether it’s to see the vet or go on ‘holiday’ to the cattery. If possible and you have the space, leave the cat carrier somewhere so that your cat has access at all times. On many models, the door can be taken off completely making the hole larger and therefore more comfortable to enter the box. Once a nice comfy blanket is in there, many cats will choose their carrier as another sleeping place and it can even be seen as a place of refuge.

While a shrub won’t die if it isn’t pruned, it might grow too large for the or become straggly, or produce poor flowers. So, gardeners prune in order to enhance a plant’s performance; to encourage it to produce better foliage, flowers, or fruit. When should we prune? There are two main pruning seasons: autumn and spring. Shrubs that flower in the winter, spring and early summer generally produce their flowers on old wood, which is any stem that grew the previous year. These shrubs need to be pruned in the autumn. Shrubs that flower in mid-summer or autumn tend to produce their flowers on this season’s growth, which means on stems that were produced this year. These shrubs should be left until spring before pruning.

There’s no magic or mystery involved: we’re working with the natural inclination of the plant. If the foliage and flowers are produced on new wood, then it makes sense to encourage the plant to produce as much of this as possible. It also makes sense to prune in the spring because any new growth in the autumn would be vulnerable to frost. Many autumn-pruned plants benefit from ‘the rule of three’. My grandfather taught me this and it and means that each year, in the autumn, after the shrub has flowered, you prune out one third of the oldest shoots. Treated this way, the shrub will be completely rejuvenated every three years but will flower every year. Pruning is best approached with a clear purpose. What is your aim? If a reshape is in order and you’re only partially shortening a stem, always prune to an outward facing bud which encourages a nice, open shape. As I’ve already mentioned, pruned plants will do a lot of growing, which means they’ll expend a lot of energy, hence all pruned plants need a good feed in the spring, before the growing season getsFinally, underway.ifyou do get it completely wrong, don’t panic. Generally, the worst that can happen is that the plant looks a bit naff for one season then bounces back the following year. That’s the good thing about plants: they just keep on growing!

John Nash

John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by. So, dear friends, I hope you came through the heat and trauma of this summer and we can now settle down to the peace and calm of the coming autumn. But what a summer! Constant reminders of what to do in the blistering heat. And how to avoid the dangers of the results of global warming. In 1976 I was returning from a holiday in Guernsey. The view from the window of the plane as we crossed the coast was amazing. The wonderful patchwork quilt of fields where all brown and crisp from the prolonged drought that had hit us, but it was the rivers that stood out that day. All of them were a ribbon of green. With virtually no flow from feeding tributaries upstream they were just a static mass of duck weed. I hear that the temperatures this summer are fiercer but I hope that the water situation is better protected and we can steer clear of the restrictions that were unavoidable during that memorable summer.Itwas on that holiday that I became aware of the way children learn the tricks of the trade as they grow.We were holidaying as a large family party. Along with the three of us we had nan and gramps, aunt and uncle, sister-in-law and hubby and their children. My son was just one year old and his allotted bedtime was around seven o’clock. His crib was at the base of our bed and I had foolishly volunteered to be his putter-to-bed each evening. (I know… I’m a saint!). As we were in unfamiliar surroundings I felt it best to sit on the bed and read until he dropped off. The little darling had other ideas. He gurgled happily and practised his kicking skills, while all the while eyeing me through the bars of the crib. I tried not looking, but he then added small vocals to the performance to attract my attention. I bit my tongue, and delivered a smile through gritted teeth. The other members of the family were by now all sitting down and enjoying their evening meal and cool glass of wine… buggers!

Warm memories

The best part of another half hour passed as I reflected on the joys of Thenparentage.Ihadabright idea. I draped a large bath towel over the bars of the cot so that I was no longer the object of his undivided attention. It worked. Silence fell and only feint movements could be detected from the other side of the towel wall. I returned to my book. For a full five minutes I thought I had cracked it. Then the movement increased. I viewed the towel with suspicion and then despair as two tiny hands appeared over the top of the bars followed by a head. He studied me squirming on the bed with frustration, accepted the fact I was still there and then the head slowly descended back to the depths. He would repeat this peek-a-boo game for another half hour or so before succumbing at last and sleeping peacefully with the look of pure innocence radiating from his angelic face. The little devil! This was repeated every night of the holiday. No tears well, not from him anyway but I never did get to eat dinner with the others. So, when you younger folks reflect on the heat of this summer try also to lock a memory away of an event that coincided with those days of sweat and sunburn. Then in years to come see which one generates the most joy to the memory!

An occasional mini-series on apple varieties… Originally Parvulum Mysterium or Little Mystery. A lovely story with this pretty little apple… A seedling tree was growing in the 19th century St Cecilia’s Abbey in Ryde, on the Isle of Wight.In2000 the Benedictine nuns at the Abbey had planted and cared for the young tree in the walled gardens overlooking the Solent. The tree grew well and under the attention of Sister Anselma it produced the most stunning blossoms followed by bumper harvests of superb fruit in the late autumn. The fruit has a Pearmain-like shape and has a wonderful sweet and aromatic flavour. Trees are neat and easily controlled.Thefruit stores well, and will keep well into the New Year if kept cool. Boogart describes his love affair with the A272, which he believes to be one of the most beautiful of highways in England, bounded upon either side by a rich tapestry of history, of which he writes profusely in delightful detail, as it threads its way from Poundford in East Sussex, ending at Stockbridge in Hampshire. COMMUNITYBILLINGSHURSTSPEEDWATCH

Billingshurst Community Speed Watch

The leader of the Billingshurst Speed Watch, Eric Bonner said, “We are not police officers and we don’t enforce speed limits. We simply monitor speeds and advise drivers accordingly in the hope of educating and influencing their road behaviour.”

More recently, however, local Community Speed Watch schemes have become alarmed by the apparent increase in the speed of vehicles including motorcycles. The call for a concerted and joint action follows a plea from the Wisborough Green speed watch group, who would like to see a link up of volunteers from Petworth, Loxwood, Billingshurst and Wisborough Green in a joint effort to reduce the incidence of excess speeding.

It is believed the joining up of speed watch groups in a combined operation is a first for road safety. The Billingshurst Speed Watch group is organised and managed by the Billingshurst Parish VolunteersCouncil needed Speed Watch volunteers are needed for speed monitoring duties, so anyone who can give up just one hour or so of their time once a month are urged to join up.

Local Speed Watch Groups join forces to target the A272
