Appeal Following Further Damage

fficers investigating a spate of criminal damage in Abbots Langley have reissued an appeal for witnesses and information after four more windows were smashed.

The latest offences take the number of incidents since December 3 to ten, with the total damaged caused thought to be worth around £5,000.

Two windows were smashed in Gallows Hill Lane between 10.40am and 11.30am on Saturday, December 13.

A third window was targeted in the same street sometime

between 1pm on Wednesday, December 10 and midday on Monday, December 15.

A window was also damaged in Abbots Road between 11am and 12.30pm on Friday, December 12.

Previously, windows have been smashed in Gallows Hill Lane, Kindersley Way and Hazelwood Lane.

The suspects have been described as three boys, aged around 14 years old. One is described as having short brown hair and was wearing grey jogging shorts and carrying a dark rucksack.

Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant for Abbots Langley, Neil Canning said: “These are completely mindless acts which have left the victims with the inconvenience of having to replace their windows at a great cost, at a time of year when money is often quite tight.

“We now have a description of those we suspect to be involved and I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened or who saw a group matching this description acting suspiciously in the area around these times to get in contact.

“In the meantime officers

from the Safer Neighbourhood Team will be carrying out extra patrols in the roads affected.”

Neighbouring village Kings Langley has also suffered some similar incidents around the same time.

Neighbourhood Plan

n May 2014 the Parish Council decided to embark on the process to develop a Neighbourhood Plan, under Part 2 of the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012.

The first stage of the process was to designate the Neighbourhood Planning Area.

The Parish Council agreed this should be the whole area of the civil parish.

Three Rivers District Council, as the planning authority, had to consult all residents of the proposed neighbourhood plan area, the consultation took place between July 2014 and September 2014.

Following the consultation Three Rivers District Council approved the designation of the whole of Abbots Langley Parish as the neighbourhood plan area, as shown on this map.

Now the initial designation of the plan area has been completed the Parish Council intend to "launch" the Neighbourhood Plan process to residents at the Annual Parish Meeting, which will be held on Thursday 5th March at 19:30 in Tanners Wood Hall.

Second Season of Feature Films for the Spring at the Henderson Hall

F

ollowing the enthusiastic reception for the first trial series of films shown by the Henderson Hub team during early December, a second programme is being prepared for the spring season. All of the formats trialled in the first series will be repeated; the Sunday afternoon tea cinema, the evening showings and the daytime children’s films, with the added feature of a classic or period cinema special. In all, it is expected that seven or eight films will be shown in this new season running up to the Easter holidays. Actual dates are not available at the time of writing, and the list of films is provisional, subject to the availability of public screening licences.

The planned programme for February includes: What We Did On Our Holiday (2014)– Staring Rosamund Pike, David Tennant and Billy Connolly. Written by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin.

It is a family comedy with a balance of poignancy and laughs and feel good factor. 12 Years A Slave (2013) the multi Oscar winning, true story of

one man's fight for survival and freedom, will be shown served with tea on a Sunday afternoon. Maleficient (2014) – Angelina Jolie is Maleficient in the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” – A Saturday morning adventure.

And, if a copy is available, Cast A Dark Shadow (1955) – featuring Dirk Bogarde at his most sinister, and a brief location visit to Abbots Langley at its most picturesque.

For late March through to the Easter holidays, the programme features The Imitation Game (2014) with

Benedict Cumberbatch as the code-breaker Alan Turing in an intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant and complicated man, The Imitation Game follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.

On a lighter note, the French countryside stars alongside Helen Mirren in The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014), an uplifting and feel-good cultural feast full of Indian spices, French sophistication and British wit. In Mr Turner (2014), Timothy Spall turns in an Award-winning performance in the title role,which explores the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner. The season will conclude with at least one showing, maybe two, of Paddington (2014) sometime around Easter.

Hub are staging these feature films in order to establish their base at the Henderson Hall as a regular entertainment venue in advance of its opening as an exhibition gallery, arts’ centre and social space on a day-today basis. That is the overall objective of the Hub Company, whose plans include installation of equipment and more suitable seating, enabling a permanent Community Cinema programme. Supporting these trial film showings will help that project on its way as well as being good entertainment in a friendly setting. All seats will be £5, and although online booking and payment by card attracts a small fee, it does greatly assist the Film Hub organisers.

he school hall at Bedmond Primary and Nursery School was crowded to capacity when teachers, children and parents congregated for a special Christingle Assembly.

It was a lovely service with carefully selected music, hymns and readings and the children sat expectantly.

Each child held an orange decorated with sweets and topped with a candle.

At the appropriate moment parents took charge.

There was individual supervision to ensure safety

and each candle was lit. The curtains were closed and the hall was immersed in a warm candle-lit glow. The children took it very seriously and were attentive as they sang and clasped their oranges. It was an idyllic moment before the candles were extinguished but one those children will remember.

It had taken such a lot of management and supervision and ran so smoothly. It left some lasting, happy memories of school days and Christmas.

his year the Bedmond Village Task Force held their communal Carol Singing under the night sky around the Christmas Tree outside The Tin Church in Bedmond. The evening started with a candle-lit procession from the Village Hall along the High Street past the shops and car showroomwhich were lit up for Christmas, on to the church. A large congregation gathered round the tree that was again this year, kindly

donated by J and S Funeral Services.

The tree was enthusiastically decorated by the children of Bedmond Village Primary and Nursery School and looked magnificent standing in pride of place in the church forecourt.

People came despite a rainy start and the rain stopped off at the end when the congregation gathered inside the church for mulled wine, mince pies and lots of friendly good-cheer.

igfest friends around the area are working hard at putting puzzles together for the coming event in 2015.

We have many new and different puzzles and we are including a special vintage selection this time.

The Jigfest will be held on Saturday 21st March 2015 from 10am to 5pm in the Abbots Langley Community Centre, Manor House Grounds, WD5 0AP. Admission will be £1 and will include tea or coffee.

Accompanied children are free.

Proceeds will be shared between the Community Centre itself and other local charities.

Yes, we also spent December celebrating the Christmas season at the Abbeyfield house in Abbots Langley but there were some differences from previous years. As well as the school children coming to sing carols, the small choir “Sing for Joy” entertained us one morning with a selection of songs and Christmas music. Our contact with them is through one of the singers, Wendy Meldrum, who is the wife of our Treasurer and we had enjoyed a previous visit from this choir in the summer.

They certainly live up to their name and do sing for joy.

The Christmas Tea Party for the committee members, friends of the house, staff and of course the people who live here was a very cheerful afternoon which began with carol singing led enthusiastically by David Warner and accompanied by Brian on the piano. Then on the Sunday the Christmas

lunch which was prepared by our cook Jose, ably assisted by his wife, was according to the residents a best ever.

The novelty activity of the month was organised by a dear friend and visitor to the house, Janet, who one afternoon had a good number of residents and friends making peppermint creams.

The following week everyone was studiously creasing and folding paper to make boxes and lids to hold these sweets and finally the boxes were decorated and tied with curly ribbons!

Perhaps someone you know is concerned at the prospect of lonely winter days and nights in a house on their own.

Maybe we have just the right affordable accommodation for them at the Abbeyfield in Greenways, where they can remain independent while other people look after the house and organise the meals.

And having lunch and tea together in the dining room does mean that you will be meeting up with others in the house at least twice a day.

great turnout to the Christmas Carols in the Park with £189 being generously donated to the YMCA Health and Wellbeing Projects.

Park Ranger, Damien Weller said: "I would like to give thanks to the YMCA for hosting the event again this year. Thanks also to Chaplin Matt Penny and Team for leading the music and giving the Christmas message; Jo Tindale and team from Charters Nursery,

for preparing food and drinks, serving and coordinating the collection; Lisa Cook and Di Bugeja (TRDC), for the design and production of our posters and leaflets; Kay FitzGerald (TRDC) for supporting us on the night and making sure everyone got their glow sticks.

Lastly, but by no means least, I would like to thank Mark Bennett and the Youth Offenders Team for delivering by hand over 800 leaflets to local residents."

Hymnathon Saturday 7th February

t Lawrence will be holding its first ever “hymnathon” – a 10 hour hymn singing marathon – on Saturday 7th February 2015 from 9am to 7pm to raise money for the work needed to the organ.

An online donation page will be set up shortly with further details announced in the New Year (check our website, Facebook page and the weekly pew sheet). To make a donation please visit the online donation page or use the donation forms which are at the back of church.

You can also help choose the Parish’s top 10 hymns! When making a donation please quote the first line of your favourite hymn. The Parish’s Top 10 Hymns will be sung during the last hour.

So far we have 5 organists scheduled to play throughout the day. There will be a big

screen with live updates of donations and which hymn is top of the leader board at the end of each hour and refreshments will be served throughout. This never before event will be a unique occasion in St Lawrence’s 850 year history so do please drop by and sing for an hour or two.

Abbots Langley Gardening Society Christmas Social Evening

O

ur Christmas Social started off with our secretary and Chairman of Abbots Langley Parish Council, Jane Lay, awarding shiny cups to the local allotment holders for their hard work throughout the year and then on to our entertainment for the evening, Jacky Nutkins imparting her tales of a professional gardener with some thought provoking questions thrown in. How she covers 32 gardens I can’t imagine. That sounds like a lot of hard, but enjoyable work to me. Even though her family was in horticulture it took her 18 years, and starting a family, to make her realise that she was happiest working with plants and has never looked back since.

In the break we had some lovely cheeses and mince pies AND, of course, our sparkly outfit competition.

Had I realised that there was chocolate as a prize I might

have sparkled up a bit more, still, I will remember that for next year!

Our next meeting is on January 15th starting at 7.30pm - Douglas Farrant talking to us about how to care for those Orchids that you were given last year and how to make them flower again and again, and the AGM. We meet at the Manor House Sports & Social Centre on the third Thursday of the month and you can enjoy our social evenings for only £5 for the whole year. Doors open at 7.30pm so you even have time to buy a drink from the bar before the meeting starts.

ur last event of 2014 was the Coffee Morning, run jointly with the Mothers Union, held in November. As always this was very successful with many people enjoying the varied stalls and raffles, buying some Christmas presents and of course sampling the lovely bacon or sausage butties. The two organisations were able to make a joint profit of over £1000, which made an excellent end to a very successful year.

The Friends are continuing to provide money to the church of St Lawrence to maintain the upkeep of the building and have now completed their commitment to pay for the repair to the two large stained glass windows (this cost in excess of £16,000). It is likely that the next project will be repair to some of the stone ‘window

frames’ - watch this space!

Our diary of events for 2015 is already shaping up very well, with most of the old favourites in there, starting with our annual visit to one of the local ‘curry houses’ in February. We are booked into Abbots Tandoori (Langley Road) on Monday February 2nd – 7 for 7.30pm. Perfume Fundraising Project and win a bottle of perfume!

W

ith the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of WW1, and the focus of remembering each local man who went off to war, a joint project with local Perfumer John Bailey and Village Life will hopefully raise the Back to the Front project some much needed funds.

A limited edition perfume will be created which will be called “Memories” but we need your participation. We would like you to visit either Box 2 in Kings Langley High Street or Langley Travel in Abbots Langley High Street as soon as possible and before 15th January 2015, sniff two perfume samples, choose your favourite leaving your name, a contact number/email and the reason for your choice.

The winning submission would then be presented with

a special flacon and refillable purse atomiser with a value of £100.

The winning perfume will then be available for sale just before Valentine's Day until Mothering Sunday in March.

All profits for every bottle sold will be donated to the Back to the Front project and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal

Towpath Improvements Completed

W

ork has now completed on our towpath improvement project along the Grand Union Canal in Watford, transforming this much loved route for the many walkers, cyclists, boaters and joggers who use it every day.

Costing £350,000, two miles of towpath have been resurfaced from Bridge Road, Langleybury to Home Park Industrial Estate in Kings Langley and from Iron Bridge Lock at Cassiobury Park to Moor Lock at Croxley Green.

We've had help from Hertfordshire County Council, Three Rivers District Council and Watford Borough Council to fund this project. The new towpath will allow easy access to the waterway and the surrounding Hertfordshire countryside and parkland.

James Clifton, enterprise manager for the Canal & River Trust, said: “This is a very popular stretch of the Grand Union Canal and this partnership with the local authorities has provided the money to make a real difference, by improving the quality of the towpath significantly and making it much easier for everyone to use.”

Elected Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill, adds: “We are pleased to provide funding for the towpath improvements. I’m hoping even more people will spend a few hours along the waterway, watching the colourful canal boats chug by and see what wildlife they can spot, whilst enjoying some gentle exercise and fresh air.”

s the colder weather descends on the county, Police are warning drivers not to leave vehicles unattended with the keys in the ignition, whilst waiting for it to defrost.

Every year vehicles are stolen when frosty conditions make lengthy defrosting necessary, as drivers leave cars unattended with the engine running on driveways or even on the street. In the event of your car being stolen whilst the keys are in it you will probably find that the insurance company will refuse to pay out your “claim”.

The frosty weather also makes driving very hazardous, but you can stay safe by following a few important driving tips: • ALWAYS ensure your windscreen and other windows are fully de-iced and de-misted before moving off. Driving without clear visibility is not only illegal but puts you, pedestrians and other road users at risk. It’s worth the few minutes it takes to prepare your car properly.

• Ensure your wiper blades are in good condition and make sure you have plenty of washer fluid.

• Slow down – make sure you adjust your driving to the conditions of the road.

The Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat candidates swiftly accepted the invitation to take part in a hustings at Kings Langley School on April 27th.

The school’s Headteacher, Mr Gary Lewis, met all the criteria for chairing such an event- impartiality and substantial experience in handling situations which might become rather lively. He readily accepted the task of conducting an “Any Questions?” style of forum and made sure that a brisk pace was maintained.

An encouraging number of local people attended and put their questions to Ayfer Orhan, Richard Grayson and Mike Penning.

By general consent, it was a useful and civilised event which covered a wide range of issues. It would have been encouraging to have seen some young people present even though only a few would have been eligible to vote.

Hospice Announces New CEO T he Board of Trustees at The Hospice of St Francis has announced that Steve Jamieson, currently Deputy Director of Nursing at the Royal College of Nursing, is to be its new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Dr Ros Taylor, MBE, DL, who has led the Hospice for the last 18 years.

Steve, a high-profile leader in health and social care policy, with significant management, clinical and end of life care experience, will take up his post in March 2015 for a period of handover before Dr Taylor leaves to take up her post more fully as National Director for Hospice Care at Hospice UK in April.

Charles Toner, Chairman of Trustees, said "Following a rigorous selection process, I am delighted that we have appointed Steve Jamieson as our new Chief Executive Officer. He has a clinical background, and brings the leadership, management skills and experience that are needed to continue the development of The Hospice of St Francis".

Steve commented, “I am absolutely delighted to be appointed as CEO at The Hospice of St Francis. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to utilise my leadership skills within an organisation which is at the forefront of delivering excellence in care to people facing serious illness.

As the Royal College of Nursing’s Deputy Director of Nursing since 2007, Steve has brought significant change to the delivery of health policy both nationally and internationally, helping shape and promote excellence in practice.

But he started his career at the coalface, holding various nursing posts at

hospitals in Northern Ireland, Blackpool and London before joining the Royal College of Nursing, the world’s largest professional union of nurses, in 1997 as its HIV sexual health and men’s health policy advisor.

He’s been a prime mover in improving care for people with dementia, has been a vice chair of the Board of Trustees at an HIV Hospice, The Sussex Beacon, in Brighton and is currently a trustee of Dementia Adventure Trust.

He also has extensive media experience, having presented on national television and radio and is an accomplished key note speaker at both national and international events.

Dr Taylor said, “I’d like to warmly welcome Steve to The Hospice of St Francis. I know he will bring leadership and presence to a wonderful organisation which I’m sure will continue to thrive long into the future and which I’m sad to leave.

Advice Column From Your Local CAB I’ve just found out that a shop I’ve bought goods from has gone bust.

How will this affect my consumer rights?

When a trader goes into administration its rights and responsibilities change.

Depending on your situation you might end up losing out, so it’s important to know what you can do to protect yourself.

A common problem when shops go bust is what you can do if you have a gift card. Once they go into administration shops are under no obligation to continue to accept gift cards, although some may continue to do so. If you have a gift card then hold on to it, even if it isn’t being accepted, as the situation can change. This works both ways, so if a shop is taking vouchers then make sure you use them while you can.

If you’ve put down a deposit on an item that you have yet

to receive, then whether or not you receive it will depend on whether it has been ‘earmarked’ for you. If it has then the shop should fulfil your order, but if not then you may not see the goods.

If you’ve bought something, for example electrical or white goods, which become faulty then it might be easier to claim under the manufacturer’s guarantee.

You can log a complaint with the administrators which will add you on to the store's list of creditors, but realistically most customers will be a long way down the list. If you used a credit or debit card you may be able to make a claim from your provider, and if the goods or services you bought came with a manufacturer’s guarantee or an insurancebacked guarantee, you may be able to make a claim under them. If the trader was a member of a trade association, contact them to

French Leave by Voyager Comparisons with life in France from a former resident

Trunk recalls . . .

W

hich are you? A ruthless disposer of junk? Or do you keep everything, because one day it might be useful? When does keeping become hoarding?

It’s a standing joke in Voyager Towers, that I keep everything.

Maximus, who, after ten years away has just returned to France, was heard to mutter as we recently moved the contents of my shed, “What did he keep that for?” Easy peasy. Dispose today, regret tomorrow. It’s a universal truth known to all shedders.

I’m not talking about things like excess paper, the 21st century’s wolfsbane: useless bank letters with terms changed in their favour, junk mail, promotional newspapers, and redundant debit card receipts, though I recently learned from the wireless that even they can be useful. The programme was addressing false allegations and one man interviewed had been cleared of a crime by proving with receipts that he could not have been where he was alleged to have been. No, rather I am talking about screws, nuts that don’t fit bolts, or that bit of cable that will be useful... and eventually is—20 years on.

The problem arises when you move. When my parents left Kings Langley in 1989 after 30 years, the furniture was a doddle, but not the garage.

They moved from Toms Lane to Pound Cottage in Common Lane in the early 70’s and Dad added a narrow garage, just about wide enough to open the car doors. It was to become a miracle of compaction. So much “will-come-in-handy” debris was therein thrust that the removal men had to order up another half-pantechicon. They filled it too. Clearly then, I’m doomed. Doomed. It’s genetic. Or perhaps it’s coming from the last generation for which “waste not, want not” was a reality.

Actually, I’m unrepentant.

My Dinky toys and O-gauge clockwork engines are now collectible, not to mention the bellows’ cameras, lead soldiers and memorabilia of empire… Not that I would sell them. All have been lovingly moved from house to house over forty-five years.

Thus, when we quit Manchester 30 years ago, among other detritus a rusty trunk accompanied us. At some time it had been forced open because the keyless padlock was (and still is) on the twisted hasp and staple. It was always in my mind to restore it. It still is… (I hear a hollow laugh from without.) Over

the years it has proved its worth as a portable glory hole, so when we moved to deepest Brittany in 2008, it descended into the cellar awaiting resurrection.

And this month, it and its contents (several years’ worth of the legendary 1950s’ comic, Eagle, just 4½d, for those that remember pre-decimal money and real comics) finally came in from the damp.

With it came a flood of memories. For one, I had falsely remembered that it came from my mother’s empire-trotting family. In fact, it had belonged to one Lily Shalom, the previous occupant of 10, Everett Road, Withington. Her name still appears on the front in faded white paint. Are we the only ones who remember it now?

Everett (late Albert) Road was built around the turn of the 20th century. (It’s not clear why or when the now obscure Everett displaced the late Prince Consort.) Thirty years on, the road is a grainy film, scratched and faded, but I recall that the red-brick terraced villas on the left are a bit smaller than their lighter counterparts on the right, which in turn are smaller than those in the little cul-de-sacs on either side. I can imagine TS Elliot’s carbuncular, small house agent’s clerk with one bold stare describing the houses as in “a variety of styles available to suit every taste and pocket”.

Because no. 10 was falling down, we only paid about £7,500 for it in 1978, a knockdown price, but still a stretch. Evidently Miss Shalom had lived frugally since the 1920’s and little had been “modernised”. The original marble and tile fireplaces were mostly intact, encrusted with layers of crinkled, grey paint, as was everything else. A mazuma graced each doorframe; in my ignorance I didn’t know they carried a prayer scroll to be touched as you enter, that is until Stan Goodman, our Jewish doctor, explained. There were even two attic bedrooms for the maids, but, if they had ever existed, they were long gone...

In fact, no. 10 mirrored the state of parts of the road at that time. Some houses (homes in today’s ghastly touchy-feely parlance) had been let as student flats: big rooms brutally divided and exteriors left to moulder amid unkempt privet. It was a street that had seen better days, as we learned from our near neighbours, a charming elderly couple, who had moved there in the late 40s. He was a retired plumber and having been “in

Donat plaque trade” they were scorned when they arrived by the posher, postwar petit bourgeois. Forty years on their house was among the best maintained.

It was a nice road, unpretentious and friendly (as was and is Withington village).

Some longstanding residents who had hung on by their fingertips were beginning to see a process of regeneration. And there were characters. The Misses L…, who lived in a house reputedly devoid of furniture, but with windows so clean you thought the glass was missing. One of them would obsessively pick up litter on the street, but wouldn’t engage in conversation...

Peter Sellers said "I think he was God." However, Everett Road has a claim to fame that few knew of

Robert Donat when we were there, but that was finally celebrated in 2011. The actor/manager Robert Donat, who died of a brain tumour aged 53, was born at no. 42. I always knew he was, but I didn’t know where.

Admired by Laurence Olivier, Donat said of himself: "I never found any security in life until I discovered the false security of stardom." However, the plaudits of his peers say it all. Charles Laughton called him "The most graceful actor of our time,” while Peter Sellers said "I think he was God." Since 2011, no. 42 has carried a plaque commemorating his birth. It was organised by the Withington Civic Society (which was formed as we left) and Donat’s son and daughter attended the ceremony. Mum would have been delighted, for she adored him. I just wish I had been there.

Should I take the maintenance payments my husband is willing to give me for our children?

Q. I have recently separated from my partner and we have two children. They are aged 15 and 19. Their father is only willing to pay maintenance in respect of the younger child and takes the view that our eldest child is now an adult. However, our son is still studying for his A levels as he fell behind a year doing retakes. Is he still obliged to pay?

A. Child maintenance is now dealt with through the Child Maintenance Service (CMS), they have replaced the Child Support Agency (CSA). The regulations mean that non resident parents are now required to pay maintenance for children until a child's 20th birthday, provided that child is undertaking full time non advanced education (i.e. not degree level) or is registered with a government approved training course. Therefore your son would fall into this category.

The CMS try to encourage parties to reach their own arrangements for child maintenance. There is formula based on a percentage of the non resident parent's gross income, but also takes into account things such as; other dependant children in their household, other child maintenance obligations to another family and the number of nights the children may spend with them. There is an online calculator which can help if you are aware of your ex-partners income and other details. The new service operates two schemes.

The Direct Pay scheme, where they calculate the level of payments for you (and have access to HMRC records) and you work out between yourselves arrangements for payment, or the Collect and Pay service.

It is far better to try and avoid the collection service as the payor has to pay an additional 20% as a collection fee and the recipient has 4% of their maintenance payment deducted as an admin charge.

Record Numbers Take Part in Hospice Santa Dash!

ecord numbers of Santas on two and four legs cut a festive dash through the centre of Hemel on Sunday 14th December to raise vital funds for charity.

More than 450 mums and dads, babies and children, grandparents, friends, work colleagues and dashing dogs came together as a community to kick start their Christmas at the Hospice of St Francis’ seventh annual Santa Dash.

Clear skies and Lapland temperatures provided the perfect backdrop for the festive fun, which saw teams from all over Herts and Bucks taking part and Camelot Under-10’s Rugby squad even cancelling their Sunday morning fixture so coaches and boys could support teammate, 9-year-old Sam Morley, who was dashing in memory of his mum, Elizabeth and grandad, Michael Beever, who both received care from the Hospice.

Sam’s dad, David, from Shothanger Way, Bovingdon, explained:“Sam was just going to do it on his own, but I emailed Sam’s coach, Jamie, to ask if he’d share Sam’s fundraising link and the next thing I knew, they’d cancelled their fixture and decided to surprise Sam by dashing alongside him.”

Fifteen of Sam’s team mates, who’ve known each other since they were six, plus five Camelot coaches

and a dozen parents dashed alongside Sam, raising an incredible £2k between them in just five days to support the Hospice, which relies on voluntary donations for 80% of its £4.7m a year running costs.

“Sam was a bit overwhelmed but really happy when he saw them all and this shows that true team spirit isn’t just about going out and winning,” added David, 47. “The care Liz received from Hospice nurses at home before she died in April 2012 and the care Michael received in the Hospice before he passed away in September this year was exceptional and we just wanted to show our debt and gratitude.”

Sam’s coach Jamie Beck summed up the event when he said: “It was an amazingly positive atmosphere, running

with so many people who in one way or another, have been touched by the magnificent work that the Hospice of St Francis does. The whole thing was truly astounding.”

Hemel MP Mike Penning stressed the importance of not just taking part but raising money to support the vital work of the Hospice, before sounding the klaxon to start the Dash in Riverside, Hemel, at 10am.

Sprinters set off first, scooters and bikes followed, and strollers, buggies and wheelchairs brought up the rear. Canine companions were out in force too, wearing Santa coats, seasonal ruffles or a touch of tinsel.

Hundreds of spectators, including supporters, shopkeepers and Sunday morning strollers lined the route, which weaved through Hemel Old Town, through Gadebridge Park and back to Riverside through the Water Gardens.

First over the finish line for the second year running was 15-year-old Cavendish School pupil and Watford Athletics Club runner Thomas Rayner, from Chaulden, in a time of just under 14 minutes. “It’s a great community event and fantastic fun for a brilliant cause,” said Thomas, “I’ll definitely be back in 2015!”

Mums Angharad Harrison, 31, from Bridge Street, Berkhamsted and Sarah Vloothius, 29, from Chesham Road, Wigginton, took part as the Yummy Mummy Santa Honeys with their 4-month-old babies Samuel and Jack dressed as an elf and a Christmas parcel. “It’s our first year doing this and it just looked like such a fun thing to do in the run-up to Christmas for a great cause, we couldn’t resist,” said Sarah.

from Bennetts End, was one of hordes of school children who took part. Ollie, a pupil at Nash Mills C of E School, raised an amazing £250 for the Hospice for the second year running and had the time of his life.

“It was brilliant,” he beamed as he came over the finish line with dad, Ian. “I’m definitely doing it again next year” – a sentiment echoed by Theo and India Karia, from Boxmoor Primary School, who raised an amazing £800 for The Hospice, with Boxmoor Primary winning the Dashers Cup for entering the biggest team of over 30 staff, children and families, including head teacher Vicky Evans.

Community Fundraiser Andrea Grant was delighted with how well the Dash went although the exact amount raised has not yet been finalised. She said: “We are so grateful for the amazing support we’ve received. We’d like to thank John Darin from Heart 96 radio for being such a great MC, Mike Penning for all his support, Smiths Coffee for providing refreshments, Lennons solicitors for being sponsors and Riverside Shopping Centre for hosting.

“And of course, huge thanks to our volunteers and marshals not to mention more than 450 Santas who took part, so many of whom come back year after year to support the Dash. It really was a perfect way to get the festive season properly underway!”

Nelson Ashley, who runs the sessions every Tuesday between 8.30-9.30pm has a background in martial arts with over 25 years experience in Karate. Nelson is currently a 4th Dan (degree) Blackbelt and was the 2011 British circuit and 2012 European Karate Champion. After successfully running Karate clubs and Boxercise-Boxfit classes in Dartford and Croydon, he set up a new Boxercise class in Watford and Abbots Langley last year.

‘I started training in Boxercise as an extension of my cross training to get into top fitness for the European and World Karate Championships in 2008. I found that this style of fitness training got me into peak fitness and the best shape of my life in the shortest amount of time. I enjoyed it so much that I retrained and registered as a Boxercise Instructor. My Boxercise

The Major General is a Clergyman Again O

n the poster for our forthcoming production of The Pirates of

Penzance, the characters shown are Cheryl Aughton Clark as Mabel. David

Southorn as the Sergeant of Police, Russell Stratton as the Pirate King, Emma Stratton as Ruth and Geoffrey Farrar as the major General.

Geoffrey is a Methodist minister at Harebreaks Methodist church in North Watford and this is not the first time that the part has been played by a member of the clergy. In 1998 The Rev Brian Andrews from St Lawrence Church, Abbots Langley played the part both at The Palace Theatre and at the Buxton Opera House and the society has had a strong link with local clergy since it was founded in 1950 by the Rev Raymond Wilkinson.

This is a very challenging part with one of the famous Gilbert and Sullivan patter

songs ‘I am the very model of a modern major general’.

For this production the words have been brought up to date in a topical and amusing way.

Misunderstandings and mishaps abound en route, not least with Gran, and events are brought to a riotus conclusion when Maisie tries to apologise and Elsie catches her at it.

Direction will be provided by veteran actor and producer, Wendy Gardner. Wendy has produced over 35 plays and she comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience after acting in over 100 productions with the group.

Our newest member, Beth, will be acting along side her father, Steve, who also plays her father in the production.

Family Planning is an amateur production in association with Samuel French.

2015 its 82nd year. Having performed in 3 different locations in the group’s history The Centralians have been performing at Henderson Hall in Abbots Langley since 1983.

TRDC Successfully Use New Powers To Tackle Antisocial Behaviour A

t the end of November, following a joint investigation with Hertfordshire Constabulary, Three Rivers District Council obtained a Closure Notice on a property for three months following a series of incidents at the address.

Three Rivers were able to get a premises closure order on an address in Rickmansworth managed

by Thrive Homes, following the introduction of the new Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 that came into effect in March 2014. This allows either the Police or local Council to apply for the premises to be closed if the behaviour of the tenants there is causing a serious nuisance to the public.

The Council and Police gathered evidence which

included the accommodation being used by various individuals engaging in disorderly, offensive and criminal behaviour which resulted in serious nuisance to members of the community.

Councillor Roger Seaborne, Lead Member for Community Safety said, “This is the first premises closure in Three Rivers using the new tools and powers and was a fantastic piece of work by Three Rivers Community Safety Team and the policing team at Rickmansworth Police Station. It involved a lot of evidence gathering and partnering work but the new closure power has proven to be fast and flexible in allowing us to protect victims and communities.”

Chief Inspector for Three Rivers, Deirdre Dent said:

“This is a great result. Since August police have received numerous calls about this property from local residents, who were rightly concerned about noise, visitors at all times of the day and night and suspected drug taking and alcohol abuse.

“This is not the type of activity people should have to put up with and so we have worked to build up a strong case to obtain this order and, with assistance from Three Rivers District Council, have achieved a positive result for the residents. I hope this reassures them that we do take reports of anti-social behaviour seriously and will do all in our power to tackle it.”

The property will now remain closed for 3 months to any other person other than

the tenant, which will bring much needed peace and quiet to the local residents. Anyone in breach of the closure order will face up to 6 months in jail, an unlimited fine or both.

Thrive Homes will now aim to use the new powers to take back possession of the property, following this closure order, using the absolute grounds for possession.

Abbots Langley Carol Concert and Christmas Lights

rganised by Abbots Langley Parish Council with support from Abbots Langley Biz, this year the Carol Concert took place on Thursday 4th December 2014 in the High Street, Abbots Langley.

The Carol Concert was opened by Councillor Jane Lay, Chairman of the Parish Council, who turned on the Christmas lights. The event was compered by Dean Courtney, who did an excellent job in keeping proceedings organised!

Once the lights were turned on the choirs of Churches Together, Abbots Langley School and Bedmond Village Primary & Nursery School led the singing of traditional Christmas carols.

Catering was provided by Ginders Catering, there was even some sweets for the children, delivered by Santa.

There was no charge for this event, but a collection was made for the Chairman's nominated charity the "Abbots Langley Community Public Access Defibrillators", ÂŁ627 was raised.

Nativity at St Lawrence A

lmost 2000 people attended various services at St Lawrence Church and the Church of the Ascension at Bedmond over the festive period.

Services ranged from school nativity plays to Christingle Services for the Scouts and of course midnight mass and the candlelit services on Christmas Eve. The donkey was really well behaved and loved all the attention and carrots that were lavished upon him.

He was dressed up for the occasion with a tinsel trim on his head collar.

It was a really special time too for Katherine Bunting who has played the part of Mary for several years. This year was really different as her own new born son Tobias took the part of baby Jesus when Katherine played Mary. Her niece Imogen also debuted as a shepherd.

Another difference this year was that the travelling cribs that have been passed from house to house and

from shop to shop since 1st December were returned during the services. Aimee, granddaughter of Sally and Bill Sanderson was one of those chosen to return the crib. She was there at the first service and proudly presented the crib to the Rev. David Warner. David has been instrumental in persuading local shop keepers to host the crib and display it in their shop windows. He also encouraged those who had them at home to place them on show in a window for the night that it stayed with them.

Many of those attending the candlelit services do so every year and some of those who have been coming for many years, have brought their children along and are now bringing their grandchildren.

Each service is really special and very much a part of the way Abbots Langley comes together to celebrate Christmas with friends and family.

Top 10 Bird Feeding Tips This Winter

A

t this time of year, life can be tough for birds.

A cold snap can mean they need more energy - just to keep warm - and the short days leave less time to find food.

But you can give them a helping hand, whether you have a big garden or a small windowbox. Here are our top 10 bird feeding tips.

1. Know your birds Different species eat different things. Sparrows and finches like seeds; tits like fat; and thrushes and robins like fruit and worms.

And starlings will eat just about anything. Make sure you're providing the right menu for your diners - find out what to feed birds.

2. Look out for leftovers...

Some of our own food can be good for birds – for example, fruit cake or mince pies, dried fruit, unsalted nuts, or apples and pears past their best. Try sprinkling grated mild cheese under trees and bushes for more timid birds like wrens and dunnocks.

3. But choose the right stuff...

Birds probably won't eat

your unwanted sprouts. And putting out turkey fat is a big no-no - it's so soft it'll stick to birds' feathers and stop them from keeping waterproof and warm. Avoid anything mouldy or salty (too much salt is poisonous to small birds).

4. Don't poison your pets!

Birds love dried fruit. But if you have a dog, don't put grapes, currants, raisins or sultanas within their reach.

Vine fruits can be toxic to dogs (check the RSPCA's advice).

5. Keep water in bird baths and ponds unfrozen Birds need to drink and bathe every day - even when it's really cold outside. A pond or bird bath is great, but even an upturned bin lid or plant saucer can give birds the water they need. We've got lots of useful tips on how to keep water from freezing on our website.

6. Put out the right amount of food Only put out what will get eaten during the day. This is important if you want to avoid unwanted visitors like rats. It'll also mean that there

aren't big piles of mouldy food on your bird table.

7. Keep it clean!

Dirty bird feeders and bird tables can help spread diseases. Make sure you clean them regularly to keep your visitors healthy and happy.

And always wash your hands after feeding the birds!

8. Big Garden Birdwatch is coming...

n Wednesday 3rd December a party of members of our group took a trip to St Albans where the annual Christmas Market was being held. Our minibus was fortunately able to park by the Abbey, so we didn’t have far to go to see the stalls set out in the gardens of the Abbey.

There were about 50 stalls, a few offering hot food and drinks but most were selling gifts and craft items, some of them very unusual and beautifully hand made. There is of course much more to see and do in this lovely town so we went off in separate ways, some to see inside the Abbey, always with many visitors including several parties of children having guided tours and to see the gift shop and very well stocked charity cad stall. Others went to the busy street market in the county with more traders than usual for the Christmas season. There were plenty of good places to buy lunch, which most of us did. The few hours we had soon passed and we returned to the village having had a very enjoyable day out. For those of us not

able to easily make such a trip independently it was a real treat to once again see historic and largely unspoilt St Albans.

We had a seasonal celebration on 17th December at an informal coffee morning at which we indulged in mince pies and nibbles and were each given a ‘goodie bag’ with wine, sweets and small gifts, some of the items kindly donated by Budgens.

For many of us the onerous responsibilities of caring for family members at home do not enable us to take part in much social activity and the Carers Group provides useful opportunities to meet and talk to others in similar circumstances. It is also a point of contact for getting help from other agencies and the valuable support and advice via Vine House Surgery. We are grateful to all our helpers and supporters.

We normally meet on the last Wednesday of each month at the Methodist Church Hall at 10.30am and all carers are most welcome at our friendly group.

Abbots Langley Winter Acoustic Concerts

ell, this winter season got off to a marvellous start with concerts from Mary Humphreys and Anahata in October , and the wonderful Youngun's from Hartlepool in November.

Our concerts restart on Sunday the 8th February with a performance by The Melrose Quartet - the Sheffieldbased folk 'supergroup' formed in 2010 from the two established duos Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, and Jess and Richard Arrowsmith.

Amazing vocal harmonies and virtuoso musicianship have established them as one of the most popular acts on the folk scene today. Advance reservation is strongly advised for this concert. (note that we were unable to get sufficient support for a proposed harmony singing workshop on the morning of this concert for that to go ahead) On the Sunday 8th March we have the incomparable Jeff Warner - who performs traditional songs from North America, accompanying himself on concertina, guitar

and banjo. Jeff's seemingly casual style overlies a very polished performance, telling the stories in the songs in a way that has you hanging on every word. One of our favourite performers - we always try to catch a concert from him when he is over here!

Finally, we have an additional concert scheduled for Sunday 10th May, when the amazing New England fiddler Rodney Miller is performing a rare concert in the UK for us. Rodney is credited with being the greatest exponent of the New England fiddle style, which combines elements of English, Irish, Scottish, Quebequois and Nova Scotia styles, with a little jazz thrown in for good measure. For this concert Rodney will be accompanied

by Max Newman on guitar and Stuart Kenney on upright bass/ 5 string clawhammer banjo, who are also the musicians who feature on his most recent CD 'Stringrays'.

As before these concerts will be in the Abbots Langley Community Centre and

all start at 3 O'clock in the afternoon (doors open at 2:30) The event entrance price is ÂŁ10.00 which includes the popular tea, coffee and very scrummy cakes which are served in the interval by the ALWAC crew.

Next Steps For Bus Consultation

t a Cabinet meeting this week, a second public consultation into the buses subsidised by Hertfordshire County Council was agreed.

The Cabinet agreed with a recommendation from Highways and Waste Management Panel that a further consultation goes ahead in January 2015 with three proposals for possible changes to bus services that are subsidised by Hertfordshire County Council.

These proposals have been revised based on the feedback received during the first consultation earlier this year.

The county council does not run bus services - it currently subsidises a number of bus companies to provide services which are not used enough to make them commercially viable. These proposals affect only 2 per cent of all passenger journeys in Hertfordshire.

The proposals are: • Withdrawing funding from subsidised services after 7.30pm Monday to Saturdays • Withdrawing funding from subsidised services that operate on a Sunday (except for routes that directly serve

hospitals up to 7.30pm) • To determine how much money is spent on bus services based on usage and value for money. This will include an amendment to the bus strategy.

Over last four years, the county council has worked hard to deliver savings totalling £150m across the council while protecting essential frontline services.

Due to further significant reductions in national funding and other pressures, the county council needs to save a similar amount over the next four years.

Terry Douris, Cabinet Member for Highways and Waste Management, said: “Thank you to everyone who responded to our first consultation, signed petitions and wrote to us – this information has been helpful in shaping revised options for this new consultation.

“Based on the feedback we received during the first consultation, the revised options we are now proposing as part of a new consultation include a later cut off point for subsidised services, protection where possible for routes that directly serve hospitals and establishing a value for money

approach when supporting local bus services.

“Despite having already made some savings, the future funding gap remains an ongoing challenge. This consultation will enable us to make informed decisions about how to make the savings needed in the future, while balancing the needs of bus users and all other taxpayers.

“We will have to make some difficult decisions in the months and years ahead, but

we have to prioritise how we spend our money to deliver the services that are most needed and we have to do this within our existing budgets.

I must stress that although there is a clear reference in the consultation to a financial impact, no final decision will be taken until the completion of the consultation period and after a period of evaluation.

Final proposals will then be brought to Cabinet for a decision.”

Staying Healthy and Independent

A

new report on adult social care has highlighted how Hertfordshire County Council is supporting residents to live longer and healthier lives.

The ‘Health and Community Services Local Account 2013/14’ shows how we are working closely with NHS partners to develop better and more cost effective ways of helping some of the more vulnerable people in our community and improving the quality of care services.

A community enablement service is helping people regain their confidence after an accident, without needing to stay in hospital.

The report shows that 61 per cent of people who received this support did not need any further social care afterwards.

The service involves care workers visiting people in their home to ensure they are safe and re-learn daily tasks. One recipient of enablement said: “After coming out of hospital I

wasn’t sure how I would cope, but the group of ladies who came to help me put my mind at rest and we soon found a routine that worked.”

Facts in the report include: Nearly £390 million – or 48 per cent of Hertfordshire County Council’s annual budget - is spent on adult social care, with around half of this going on older people (aged 65 or over).

151,000 people contacted the county council about adult social care last year. £7.8m has been spent on providing over 84,000 items of equipment to people’s homes to help them stay in their own home.

81 per cent of people receiving on-going social care services now have a personal budget for their social care – giving them greater choice over how it is spent.

18,000 blue badges were issued to disabled people, with online applications rising to 20 per cent.

Tinsel, Coloured Lights, Carols, Turkey, Mince Pies, Season Greetings – Christmas Had Come Round Again by Billy Crush T he cards kept coming. I read them time and time again with appreciation.

A few unashamed tear drops on cards from Liverpool, Dorking, Cumbria, Isle of Wight, Hailsham and St Albans. Their Pontins holiday camp days are still remembered by the then young Blue Coat Ladies.

It is over 40 years ago now since I had the privilege of grooming them with the confidence for their first summer engagement and what was to be their future way in life. The cards say it all. A few lines from a few cards: Little Canada Isle of Wight (changed hands 3 times) no room now for your fantastic Donkey Derby. A gigantic slide and an activity complex covering the sports field. We must look forward, not back, keep well, love Natalie You saw my Dad, you made me a Blue Coat, you fashioned

my life. I still sing the songs you taught me, love Jane.

Dear Billy, from your Blue Coat girl, the best boss a girl could ever have, love Sylvie.

PS I will always remember my first stage line “What did the girl say to the sailor” So good to hear from you.

I owe my wonderful career to you. I would never have started singing if it wasn’t for you. Lots of fond memories, Sharon I’ll never forget, I loved your Gwen and John. Thanks for all you did for me. You taught me to call Bingo – I still do! It gave me confidence. I was so proud of being Mary for the Christmas Nativity scene. I remember the beach ramble and a sing song with Muriel on the piano. I still sing the songs you taught me at the Liverpool Old People’s Clubs . Love and hugs as always, Vicky.

It was Christmas 1973 and one that will never fade. It was at Pontins, Hemsby (so sad, now all boarded up).

The staff had spent days decorating the camp so the atmosphere was just perfect for the incoming guests. The entertainment programme had been arranged and I had brought from home many props for the Christmas morning carol service. My premade crib, shepherd crooks, the gifts, the aluminium cut outs for the star, Gwen’s colourful scarves and a bag of straw given to me by a local farmer Jock Telford, to make the Christmas morning Nativity Scene just right.

The children had sung

My nativity scene at Hemsby, Christmas 1973 ‘Away in a Manger’, the organist was playing the opener ‘The First Noel’ and the nativity scene was on the road. Gwen was back stage and had dressed Baby Jesus, the Shepherds and Wise Men. All credit must go to the campers who were asked and willingly took part. Each one came on perfectly and on cue and everything was tastefully done. My Blue Coats led the

singing, the campers joined in and it had made the perfect start to what was to be for me a never to be forgotten Christmas 1973. Vicky still remembers with pride that she was the ‘perfect Mary’.
