A Fun Day Out!!

I

t is with great pleasure, as the new Chair of the Kings Langley Carnival Committee, that I can tell you about this year’s Carnival, taking place on the Common on 20th June from 12 noon. After the great support from Hemel Hempstead Rotary Club for the last few years, this year we have ‘gone it alone’ and a group of villagers, Parish Councillors and Rotarians have volunteered their time and joined forces to try and make this the best Carnival yet. We have a hard act to follow however, as last year more money was raised and donated to local causes than ever before – never mind the glorious sunny day!!! 18 organisations and individuals benefited with over £5,700 being distributed and you can hear more about their stories on pages 22 to 25. The Committee’s hard work and support over the last 8 months of planning means that we are hoping to bring you more of what you love to see (music, dog show, dancing etc) alongside some new and exciting entertainment. It’s 800 years this year since the signing of the Magna Carta (1215) and 600 years since the Battle of Agincourt (1415) so we have settled on a general Medieval theme. With this in mind our main attraction is the ‘Company of 1415’ who will be opening the proceedings at noon and then demonstrating, amongst other things, archery; medieval cooking; loom weaving and knights in full armour going into battle. You can also try on the armour and see how it feels. Alongside this we will have our usual community acts on stage as well as other entertainment upon the common. Timings can be found on page 18. But the main purpose of the day, as well as having lots of fun, is to raise awareness as well as money for local organisations and causes, and without our many sponsors, advertisers, stallholders and raffle prize donors this would be impossible. So, many thanks goes to you all for your support. Please try your luck at winning one of the superb raffle prizes by buying a ticket on the day, or beforehand from one of the village shops. Congratulations to Chloe Pearson from Kings Langley Primary School who has won the competition for designing the cover of this brochure. The nine runners up can be seen on the 4

So all that remains is for me to thank my fellow committee members for their invaluable support this year in helping to organise the 2015 Carnival - I hope we can deliver a memorable day. I would like to especially mention Beverley Funnell, the outgoing Chair, for her continued support and commitment. See some of the committee in the picture above or look out for us on the day in our designer high viz jackets!! Keep your fingers crossed for the sun!! If you want to get in touch feel free to email at: kingslangleycarnival@hotmail.com or follow us on twitter #kingslangleycarnival or tweet us @KLCarnival. See you on the common – I’ll be the one with the ice cream!! Have fun. Carol Chandler (Chair – Kings Langley Carnival Committee) With thanks to: Paul McDermid for designing the new logo and banner Shirley Lingwood for help making the bunting and backcloth 5

The Company of 1415

T

he Company of 1415 was founded by a group of like minded medieval enthusiasts who wanted to share their knowledge and passion for all things to do with medieval warfare. They are especially interested in the role played by the English longbow archers in the famous victory of Henry V against the French at the Battle of Agincourt - in 1415. Over the years, The Company of 1415 has grown to also include Men-At-Arms, fighting with different weapons and replica armour from the era. One of the most popular parts of their display is when the archers ‘loose’ their (blunted) arrows to show the devastating effect long bowmen could have on an advancing army. With the attention given to the discovery of the remains of Richard III in a Leicester car park in 2012, the Company of 1415 decided to expand their display to include the ‘Wars of The Roses’ era. Now the group provides a ‘Living History’ display, with authentic medieval cooking, chain mail making, loom weaving and various other trades to demonstrate what it was like on the campaign trail. For the younger generation, there will be a campaign tent where the children can try on different parts of the soldiers armour. If any adults are feeling brave they can even try on a full set of armour and see if they can stand up! Come and spend some time with them, see the Men-At-Arms compete in a Tourney on Foote, the archers practice their longbow skills and what the kitchen is cooking for lunch!

What Happens to the Carnival Profits?

O

nce again the Village surpassed itself with profits increasing to another all-time record and we were able to donate the monies to more good causes than ever before. A total of eighteen benefited, many of whom were represented at our annual Cheque Presentation Evening which was held at Kings Langley Cricket Club last September. As usual those who received donations can be split into four main groups. 1. Those who entertained us on the day, some of whom will be there again this year and you can read about them elsewhere in this programme. 2. Groups in the village which help people, especially the elderly, infirm or less fortunate than most, as well as those who organise sporting activities or entertainment. 3. Larger charities within the local area which offer assistance to those in need. 4. Those who helped with the organisation and running of the Carnival. The first category included the Kings Langley Community Choir, the Kings Langley Primary School Choir & Orchestra and a small group of Brownies, all of whom delighted us with their fine voices. The Senior School Jazz Band once again demonstrated their musical skills and Celtic Hearts Irish Dance and Vivo D’Arte performed for the very first time. You will be pleased to know that we have asked them all to come again this year!

In the second category there were several recipients including the Waterside Centre, which operates as an adult care service every week day. They have been able to buy outdoor garden furniture for their clients which means they can sit more comfortably in the area they have at the back of their meeting place. The Evergreen Club, who hold their alternate Thursday afternoon meetings for the elderly in the Community Centre, were able to buy some games which those who attend have thoroughly enjoyed, especially during the cold winter months. The bulk of the money will go towards a summer outing this coming June. We hope they all enjoy it! Continuing the help given to the elderly, the Heather Club is held twice a week in the Carey Baptist Church in Hemel Hempstead and is for elderly people with memory problems. It relies heavily on volunteers who freely give their time, including acting as escorts that are needed each day and helping out whilst the club is open. They spent their donation on a canal trip and lunch of fish & chips last December – enjoyed by all. A few residents in the village have got together to research the centenary of 100 years of WW1 in the village (Back to the Front). The Kings Langley team has joined forces with the Abbots Langley team and over the next few years will be holding various events within the village. Most of the research and expenses has been paid for out of their own pockets so the contribution from the 2014 Carnival aided the financial help for the Candlelit Vigil which was thoroughly enjoyed by hundreds of people. Kings Langley Football Club used their donation to put towards further ground upgrades and the ever demanding challenge to maintain facilities to an acceptable standard. Continuing the sporting theme, the Kings Langley Bowls Club was able to purchase a new sign to go over their gateway…… ..and the Cricket Club used their donation to improve the training of their junior members. The Carnival was delighted to help Kings Langley Primary School & the Comets Running Club, under the leadership of Alan Johnson, to re-launch The Puffaten Races. The 23

event attracted over 600 runners and spectators with many runners making good times but the loudest cheer of the day was reserved for 81 year old Bryan Rycroft (see photo right - photo by Eddie Dillon Promedia) who finished in the commendable time of a little over 90 minutes. Finally in this section is the Kings Langley Light Opera Company, known to most as KLLOC (clock). How lucky are we to have such talented people in our own village? We were glad to be able to sponsor their programme for a recent production. Recently a group of eight of them volunteered to help the Rotary Club of Hemel Hempstead with a Murder Mystery Lunch, the profit from which will be going to worthy charitable causes. In the third category are Dacorum Community Trust (DCT), the Air Ambulance and the Hospice of St. Francis all of which do sterling work in the area. The former assists anyone in the Dacorum area who is in need and during the year many families and individuals are given assistance. I am certain you are all aware of the Air Ambulance and I don’t think there is anyone in the village who has not heard of the Hospice of St. Francis. Those who have visited the Hospice marvel at the happiness and tranquillity that emanates within the building. Go to their web site and see the different aspects of what is offered by the hospice. It is truly amazing! And finally – the last category! Mainly, the local Scouts. In 2014 they received a substantial donation, partly due to the enormous amount of help they gave us with the distribution of the programme and also they turned out on the day to help us run, amongst other things, the ‘Fun Games Area’ for the younger children. Their assistance was invaluable – many thanks. Their ‘cause’ is the World Scout Jamboree in Japan. Three scouts will be attending - Alice (1st Apsley) and Eloise and Kerry (1st Kings Langley). They had to undergo quite a rigorous selection process, (there are 3000 scouts attending from the UK - 156 from Hertfordshire). When in Japan, young people will live and work together to find out about each other’s cultures and faiths, learn new skills, take part in adventurous activities and tackle some of the biggest issues facing the world today. We certainly wish all three of them the very best of luck Finally three local teenagers, Rachel Wallace, Katie Sadler, and Rebecca Simkin have been raising funds so they can take part in the ‘World Challenge’. The girls, all pupils at St Clement Danes School, spent the whole day helping at the Carnival last year. They are participating in a ‘World Challenge’ expedition in summer 24

Scouts

2015, and they will be travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia, acting as volunteer English teachers, assistants in an orphanage, crop planters, and helping to renovate village buildings. The goals of the expedition are to gain a better understanding of other countries and cultures, and to hone personal skills and gain experience. They have to raise all the funds for their own trip and the Committee were very pleased to be able to make a donation. I hope you will feel that we made good choices when deciding how we should spend the profit you helped us to make. Put the date of this year’s Carnival in your diary (20th June) and hopefully, we can raise even more money this year in order to help those in need in our local community. Margaret Rogers and Richard Chandler

Local Food Market Following the success of the local Food Market at Kings Langley Carnival and monthly in the High Street, Transition in Kings is organising a bigger and better Market this year. When you come to enjoy the Carnival on the 20th June, be sure to stop by the market to see for yourself what fabulous local food is available and to support those giving us a choice in what we can buy. 25
