We are glad to be able to bring you a piece from the new leader of Spelthorne Council, John

September 2020 Boughtflower. He has ambitious plans to change the focus of how council is run. Good luck to him. A plea also to keep Shepperton looking lovely. There has been a plague of litter. Let’s take pride in our village. ‘Til next month

Why all the Rubbish?

On our morning amble down the high street Mojo, the Shepperton Matters dog and I often meet Jean Davies and her trolley of rubbish bags. We will all recognise this smiley face. Jean walks the length and breadth of Shepperton every day from Sheep Walk to Gaston Bridge Road and Dockett Eddy Lane to Green Lane and everywhere in between, picking up rubbish and sweeping the pavement to make Shepperton look its best, the place we love. She does it with good humour, even during the recent heat wave, and loves her job. What an amazing lady!

Food waste litters the ground and wrapping on a bench and the bin is THERE!

and younger alike. I can only think it is laziness. So come on, lets see if we can all do our little bit and keep Shepperton looking lovely, a place we all like to walk around and be proud of. As always, if we all do our little bit, we will all benefit. But if we all have the attitude “my little wrapper is not a big deal” we will carry on drowning in rubbish. One local has taken matters into his own hands. He makes it his mission to do a walk and litter pick most days “On a walk along Black Ditch, through the lakes and back along the Towpath and up Ferry Lane I collected two full heavy duty bags of all kinds of litter this despite other people and the Streetscene folks doing the same. I have also walked along the Towpath and Dumsey Meadows to Chertsey bridge. I could hardly lift the heavy duty black bag by the time I was half way round Dumsey Meadows and still could have half filled another.” But what is also amazing is the amount of rubbish being dumped by those who don’t seem to care for our village! Jean has noticed an increase in rubbish this year. Do people not care? Smashed bottles litter the pavements almost daily, making it hazardous for dogs. Cans, wrappers, food boxes galore. There are plenty of bins in Shepperton so why leave rubbish for someone else? Is this a matter of education? Is it the youngsters who have not been told that it is NOT ok to litter, even if there is a litter angel in the form of Jean? I think in fact it is down to older To advertise call Monica on 07979 808991

Lords Bridge Court Lockdown Buddies Lords Bridge Court is a development of 38 individual apartments with residents mostly over the age of 75. When the government announced a Lockdown, many of us had no idea exactly what that would mean. Once we realised we would not be allowed to go to shops, supermarkets and pharmacies we started to wonder how we would manage. We soon realised that the wonderful Shepperton Community would come to our aid. A neighbour in Mervyn Road called Karen approached our Manager and offered help. A group of ladies and one husL to R. Jenny, Karen, Dave and Debbie. band have formed a group of shoppers called Buddies Linda could not make the ‘photo shoot’ and Brigitte our manager arranged a Buddy for each group of about 6 residents so that everyone had a volunteer to get shopping, collected medication etc. Because the supermarkets were inundated with people grabbing not only toilet rolls but all the home delivery slots, these people were a Godsend. Of course eventually the pharmacies and volunteer drivers plus local shops started to offer deliveries but they too were often overwhelmed. So our team of Buddies were very important to us. They have never let us down and are always at the end of a telephone. As things are gradually easing we are hoping to become the independent and lively group that we were before the Pandemic. Our grateful thanks to Karen, Jenny, Debbie, Jenny, Linda Jane and not forgetting Jane’s Husband, Dave, who has shopped and delivered along with the others. We feel lucky to have these wonderful people as our neighbours. Written by a resident of Lords Bridge Court., Mary Archer

A New Era of Schooling How Thamesmead School supported our learners through lockdown and the next steps

H

During the period of lockdown Thamesmead School was one of the 6% of state schools that offered live lessons to all students from the outset. We knew how important it was going to be to keep routine in place Du for our students if we were to keep them motivated through the weeks of home learning ahead. The week les before closure we trained all the staff and students in how to use MS Teams and ordered laptops to distribfo ute to our families where we knew there was no computer access. Out students had access to five 45-minute lessons daily, and a 10 minute tutor period, with their days replibe cating their normal timetables of lessons in school, with their regular teachers online at that time to teach ut them. We delivered assemblies online, and a series of house activities and other competitions too. While Ou we know remote learning is no substitute for being in school, our students who made the most of the remote provision available will have significantly reduced the learning that would have been lost during this ca period. th Throughout the lockdown period we continued to have students in school whether they had parents who were key workers or we had identified them as students who would benefit greatly we from the additional support being in school would provide. Once permitted to bring Year 10 GCSE students back into school m for face to face learning we were careful to ensure our plans included pastoral care pe to check on their well being during lock down. We also had a dedicated team of staff who made regular contact with students and families at home if we had any worries about their well being so that we could Th provide support. We were thrilled when our local Aurora Rotary club made a generous donation of supermarket vouchers to our we families who receive Free School Meals. su Our staff willingness to work hard to master new technology and deliver their lessons every day from fo home demonstrates their professionalism, commitment and care for our students. They went above and beyond that which was expected of them during this time. Throughout this time ourbe parent community shared just how much they appreciated all that Thamesmead School was doing, andan their encouraging messages of thanks provided motivation for our staff to keep going all the way through to the summer. We we now look forward to seeing our students return to school in September, as unusual as that will be. fa We hope that once we start September with all of our students returned to school that we not see further closures affecting schools in the same way. We have used the DfE guidance to prepare for reopening the Ou school and have made some key changes to ensure we are keeping our students, staff and families safe. As ho recommended we have planned our day to ensure that each year group is kept separate from the others. To be do this we have introduced a staggered school day with Key Stage 3 and 4 starting and finishing at different times. We have also extended our break times to ensure students can access oursh dining facilities safely and are zoning parts of the school. To reduce students moving around the school wem will be trying to timetable students in the same room for as many lessons as we can but we hope there will be little change to no learning itself. All practical lessons such as Science, Art, and Music will be still taught in specialist rooms W so that students can have the best learning experience. Most importantly we have increased our cleaning clo and hygiene routines (such as regular hand washing and sanitising) to ensure students, staff, and the school site are as clean as possible. All schools have been asked to have remote learning contingency plans for sc how to deliver remote learning should it be needed again, and we are confident thatre Thamesmead School is already well ahead of many schools with our remote learning having worked so well already. This same do plan will also mean that should any teachers need to self-isolate at home they can continue to teach their en lessons to students in school so that contact is not lost. Unfortunately we have to limit the visitors on site to those who are essential only. Especially during the school day and therefore this an does mean that we cannot offer physical tours of the school as we normally would. We will be doing all we can to help new parents and students get to know Thamesmead School via remote methods such as tab virtual tours, videos lea and webinars.

Thames Sailability

Ready for a September re-launch By Chris Bound

Thames Sailability has now been operating for five years, providing boat trips on the “Impossible Dream” for people who are disadvantaged by reduced mobility or learning challenges. During this time, we have completed over 400 trips and carried nearly 1,000 disabled passengers. 2020 did not start the way that any of us could have anticipated. With high water levels and strong currents in January and February, immediately followed by the Covid lockdown, we only managed one trip with our disabled passengers before we were confined to our moorings. Nonetheless, these have been exciting times for us and the team has been busy restructuring our organisation. In June we finalised our registration with the Charities Commission and, by July, we had opened our own bank account, allowing us to become an independent charity in our own right. Our team of “retired gentlemen” remains as before so, if you come and see us at Shepperton Marina or moored up at Cowey Sale, you’ll see the same familiar faces. Ownership of “Impossible Dream” has now been gifted to us by its previous owners (Sporting Activities for the Disabled) and we are hugely grateful to the trustees for their generosity.

Th fo “I ad ch pl di 20 ha st m Impossible Dream outw on the water pa Now, we are making preparations to rem commence our activities at the beginning of N September. The boat has been cleaned and fo sanitised and we shall be taking every reasonable precaution to protectin our passengers and ourselves from infection. re We are always on the lookout for additional an crew members so, if you know of anyone with boating experience who might like to join our ac team, please get in touch. en Having received no income from passenger O donations and not been able to carry out fundraising events, we would be be grateful for any donations towards continuing our work with to handicapped people. Staines Preparatory School is a happy, welcoming and non-selective school that prides itself on creating a genuine family atmosphere alongside a first rate education. We’re delighted to have just been shortlisted for ‘Prep School of the Year’ in the Independent School awards 2020. This accolade comes hot on the heels of our December 2019 ISI inspection where we achieve the highest rating possible in all categories - ‘excellent’ in in all areas. Here at SPS we adopt a ‘Growth Mindset’ culture which empowers pupils with the core belief that abilities, rather than being fixed, can be developed over time leading to an increased focus on learning, greater resilience, and superior achievement. Our supportive and nurturing environment enables pupils to fulfil their potential and become more confident, independent lifelong learners across all areas of the curriculum. During this unprecedented time we moved online with our Staines Prep @ Home virtual learning including a full timetable of classes with a balanced programme of live virtual lessons, prerecorded lessons and independent learning, all differentiated to each pupil’s stage of development. Following considerable planning and preparation by our staff we welcomed back our Nursery, Reception, Year 1 & 6 classes in June, maintaining social distancing and enriching our pupils learning with that all important social interaction. Further relaxation of restrictions enabled us to bring back our Year 5s part-time and give all year groups time in school before the end of the school year. As we get ready for the safe return of all pupils in September, following the new government guidance, we are fully prepared for an ever changing situation to ensure the consistent provision of an excellent education for our pupils no matter the challenges of the future. To discover more about Staines Prep, contact our admission team on admissions@stainesprep.co.uk.

VJ Day Marked in Style in Shepperton There was much disappointment that the Red Arrows did not make their flight over Shepperton to mark the 75th anniversary since VJ Day. But the celebrations continued at The Bell Inn in Old Charlton Lane with a themed afternoon and evening. Several visitors had made the effort to dress in 40s era outfits and there was a display of WW2 paraphernalia, including siren, outside the pub. There was a prize for best dressed and later in the evening the crowd enjoyed a WW2 themed quiz with a bottle of prosecco to the winning team. With 20/20, the ‘Mums and Dads Army’ proved worthy winners! (But I guess when the head of the team was Nick Pollard, it was a bit of shoe in!) Money was being raised for Combat Stress.

Respect and Civic Pride? We all love the flowering boat ‘Jeannette’ at the end of the high street. The Shepperton Village Conservation group does a fantastic job caring for all the planters in the high street as well as the treasured boat. Even during the heat wave, these wonderful volunteers were out there making the village look cared for. In addition, Shepperton has a “there but not there” soldier, standing guard by the boat, looking towards the war memorial. There is a lot of emotional connection in this little part of Shepperton. I was both shocked and saddened one day (yes it was the day after the pubs opened) to walk past and see that someone with no thought, care or respect had pulled up the begonias from the boat and either thrown them in the stream or placed them at the foot of the soldier, and a symbol of our current situation, a disposable glove, placed over the end of the soldiers gun. Someone may think this was entertaining, funny, cheeky, but you would be in the minority. Most of us would be appalled at the lack of respect on so many levels. I was able to save many of the flowers, and another lady picked them out of the stream. The ‘prank’ was an ignorant act of vandalism.

Watersplash Farm Wildlife Loss Lamented by Nichola Rose

I am sure a lot of us will feel a degree of trepidation and sadness with the impending excavation of the gravel pits, not only bringing about the increase in heavy lorries whizzing up and down the by pass (as if there aren't enough issues with that stretch of road), but also the loss of a wildlife habitat that has evolved over this summer and bought with it a plethora of wildflowers and butterflies.. Since the start of lock down I have been enjoying my daily walks with my sons dog Trigger, a Springer Spaniel, who is in his element sniffing out all the smells abounding at Watersplash Farm. Twice a day we complete a full circuit of the farmland and I have noticed, with the changing seasons, that the wild flowers and weeds have completely taken over. The land was ploughed back in April and grass sown, presumably for silage, however there is now no sight of the grass, just a mass of various types of greenery that have colonised the land. Initially there were many types of Mallow, enjoyed by the bees. More recently I have seen Cornflowers and Raged Robin growing. In total I have counted 10 types of what I would call wild flowers.

In addition to this the large number of butterflies that have been attracted by the flora. My tally so far is 12 different species. I was particularly pleased to see Peacock and Red To advertise call Monica on 07979 808991

I a id va ab up en al ev a Admiral butterflies and Si last week a Yellow j o Brimstone. I lost count of the number of Cinnabar caterpillars destroying a patch of ge groundsel. sn Sadly I have also seen several dead W Shrews. The other delight was a Skylark rising from the middle of the field, hovering w T for a short whilefa then swooping down. This is the first Skylark I have seen in in many years. ha It will be a great shame when this is lost to us, but I look forward to the day when the pits pl will be full of water, the lorries, noise and pollution long gone andsu we can welcome a new genre of wildlife andsi still have some wild flowers to enjoy. of In en Editor: Worth mentioning here the proposed diversion/loss of the ancient footpath across se Watersplash meadow when gravel extraction in starts. The pathway was the main route beof tween Shepperton and Walton before the bridge was built in 1750, with a ferry or ford for crossing. There is a plan to divert the footpath right around the field and residents are up in arms. If you would like to make your objection know please email anne.woods@surreycc.gov.uk

CHRISTMAS DAY AT THE GREENO CENTRE

Normally, around this time of the year, we would be contacting our guests to invite them to the annual Christmas Day Lunch at the Greeno Centre Shepperton, however, sadly because of the continuing effects of the virus and distancing rules / regulations etc and for the safety of our guests and volunteers, we regretfully will not be able to arrange this event this year. Even if the Greeno Centre can reopen, it will be under a very different way of working. This decision has not been taken lightly. We are particularly disappointed as this year would have been the 30th anniversary of the event. We hope to be able to welcome everybody back to Greeno Christmas Day in December 2021. However, to celebrate this 30 year anniversary, we plan to distribute festive gift bags during Christmas week, which will be delivered by volunteers. To support this, we should be grateful to receive monetary donations and volunteers to help with this project. We would like to express our thanks to the members of the Shepperton community, the local churches, businesses, community groups and individuals who kindly support this event each year with their generous gifts and donations. We hereby give notice of our online AGM on Zoom on Monday 21 September at 7.30pm. Anyone may attend.

If you are interested in donating to this event, being a volunteer please or wish to attend the Zoom AGM, please contact Stephen Gould; E-Mail: Sgould6024@btinternet.com Or Telephone/Leave message; 07719 875 684

Ashford and St Peter's hospitals work towards reinstating services back to pre-Covid levels

By Andrea Lewis, Interim Chief Nurse at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Severe restrictions put in place by the Government earlier this year to tackle the ongoing pandemic has significantly affected our hospital services. Like other Trusts, at the start of lockdown we had to implement several changes at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals to help keep the public, members of staff safe and reduce the risk of transmission across our sites. This meant restricting inpatient visitors across most of our services and reducing or suspending outpatient services so that we could reduce the number of visitors on-site at any time and lower the risk of transmission. The majority of outpatient appointments were no longer able to take place face to face, and instead were conducted over the phone or by video call. Many of our services were moved to create dedicated "Covid-safe" areas for elective surgeries, and face to face outpatient services moved to the Ashford and Woking sites to allow St Peter's to focus on Covid, emergency and urgent care.

Local Student Runs for MIND

A tenacious young local lad is raising money for MIND. If you can help him, it would mean a lot. A Shepperton resident for 16 years, Benji Duncan left Thamesmead earlier this year. As someone with ADHD and Aspergers he understands all too well how tough this period has been for many and how fortunate he has been. He therefore decided to train and run a marathon distance of 26.6 miles completing his marathon in October. He has set a £5,000 target and is already close to £1,800 in just a few weeks through friend school teachers and neighbours. In Benji’s words “I'm raising money to benefit Mind (NAMH), and any donation you can make will help make an impact. I’m using lockdown to raise money and awareness of mental health issues by training and running a full marathon distance. Lockdown is tough for all but particularly those with mental health issues so thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me personally”.

This poem was suggested by life-long Laleham Resident Beryl Shattock. Beryl has seen many changes in Laleham in her 90 years but believes that our loss of wildlife habitat and green spaces is the greatest shame and a little reported tragedy. An accident of geology finds this area rich in valuable minerals - but gravel raising has given no benefit to the people of Laleham. We are still fighting for the return of fields which were promised decades ago. Our village continues to be rubbished by greedy industrialists and ineffective controls...

The poem was first published in the Laleham Commonplace Book in 1995

Lalehams’s Loss By Roy Curtis Bramwell

Where they plan to raise the gravel, Whatever ton the promised yield, Was once the place we walked and talked, And picked the flowers of Gosness Field.

Do you want a part of that? Gravel grubbers raise the dust in, Half the fields of Scrubbs Meadow, Laden lorries spilling ballast Round church corner as they go. Forgotten fields that once were fertile Gone beneath the iron claw, Laleham’s loss is no one’s future THAT IS WHAT WE’RE FIGHTING FOR. Most of the fields named above, as they were known in the Laleham Parish registers between 1623 & 1845, have completely or partially disappeared under water due to the extraction of gravel.

Larks still rise from Warress Furlong Looking down on half-filled pits: Chaw Mead, Acre Mead and Steane Plott – Lumps of concrete, cars in bits. St. Clements Piece in bits and pieces, Laleham Common Mead all gone Forget the plants and birds and country Look instead at what you’ve won. Miles and miles of concrete causeway, Yet another high-rise flat, Faceless suburb, motor highway, Please mention Shepperton Matters when responding to adverts

Gardening Matters Dazzling Dahlias

Over the past few years, I've fallen in love with dahlias for their ability to provide autumn colour. I think Dahlias are like the glamorous friend who arrives late to the party, fresh and full of life, outshining all the other guests who are a bit tired and past their best...or maybe that's just me being fanciful. Either way the vibrant colours, tactile textures and stunning petal formations make the Dahlia queen of the September garden for me.
