Recalling Maywood’s first black mayor Thirty-five years ago, Joe Freelon won a special election that secured his place in history By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
The following profile of Joe Freelon, Maywood’s first African American mayor, was published on our website last November, after the former mayor died at the age of 87. It is being republished to mark the 35th anniversary of the special election victory, held on Nov. 2, 1982, that sealed his mayoralty. Born on Sept. 15, 1929, in Grenada, Mississippi, Joe Freelon was one of 13 children. He attended Grenada’s elementary and high schools before enlisting in the U.S. Army for three years and eventually enrolling at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama. See JOE FREELON on page 7

residents, pay more for water service (and for fees related to maintenance and reconnections) than some of the wealthiest (and whitest) suburbs in the country. The lengthy report singles out black suburbs like Ford Heights, Harvey and
Maywood as places with some of the highest water rates and reconnection fees in the region. “The latest census figures show that Maywood has about 7,400 households,” the See WATER WOES on page 7
