Saturday morning outside of the Hillside Municipal Complex, 425 N. Hillside Ave., a plane flew overhead. Mills, the pastor of Westchester Community Church, said the engine’s roar was a solemn reminder of just how loudly the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks reverberated in his own life. “This hit home, because my son has been in Iraq,” Mills said. “My future daughterin-law was to be in Afghanistan. So, I have a deep appreciation for what this means.” Hillside’s commemoration was also an opportunity for residents to honor the sac-

rifice of the roughly 3,000 victims, including the first responders, who lost their lives in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 — and in the weeks, months and years since then. “We’re here today to remember not only the roughly 3,000 people who died in the immediate aftermath of the attacks, but we’re also here to remember the now, they believe, almost 4,000 people to date who have died since then of complications from the dust and toxicity,” Mills said.
