Berkeley military reenactments feature diverse war stories

By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

In May 2020, historic rainfall caused the Maywood Public Library, 125 S. 5th Ave., to flood, ruining the building’s mechanical and electrical systems and causing the library to close indefinitely. Now, the library’s 16 staffers are eager to greet the public again. On Aug. 9, the institution opened for the first time since last year’s flooding. the Broadway actors were dressed like him (Alexander Hamilton that is). “Hamilton was a student at King’s College during the Revolutionary War and he started his own artillery company,” Nordin said, moments after he and his fellow re-enactors, Jack Tyson and Ron Feldman, loaded a three-pound galloper like the one Hamilton would have used to fight the British. As Nordin talked, people dressed as soldiers in other worlds — including the Civil War and World War I and World War II — milled about him. Saturday’s event, billed “America’s Military: When Duty Calls,” was presented by the Berkeley Police Department, the Berke-

ley Park District and the Chicagoland Combined Veterans Museum. The first annual event was an amalgam of stories, many of them unknown to most people, about the people who fought in America’s wars. About 100 feet away, Luther Johnson stood statuesquely in the uniform of a soldier from the 370th Infantry Regiment — one of a small number of Black regiments that served in World War I and the only one commanded entirely by Black officers. The Regiment, which included the 8th Infantry Regiment of the Illinois National Guard, was not allowed to fight; instead, the men were relegated to menial labor like See REENACTMENTS on page 2
