Board was scheduled to deny application for 180 luxury apartments at 2 Hickory Lane at July 27 meeting By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
A developer’s years-long plans to build 180 luxury apartment units at 2 Hickory Lane have reached a potentially fatal impasse, with the Westchester village board gearing up to block the project indefinitely. On the board’s July 27 agenda was a proposed ordinance to deny the planned development petition by Continental 523 Fund, LLC for a planned unit development near 31st Street and Hickory Lane in Westchester. Maywood music camp brings joy to participants Grammy-nominated Maywood native D-Erania Stampley opens Jazz Desires music school in her hometown By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
In 2019, Grammy-nominated jazz musician D-Erania Stampley was all set to open her Jazz Desires music school in her native
Maywood only to watch the pandemic derail those plans. Now, she is trying to pick up where she left off. Stampley and three teachers are providing music lessons for kids and adults on a variety of instruments, including guitar, piano, saxophone and percussion. On July 24, Jazz Desires held a daytime music summer camp at the school, located at 1213 S. 17th Ave., for 15 kids and adults who took part in group activities and music lessons before showing off what they learned during a recital later in the day. Stampley said that she hopes to do more activities like this in the future as she works to recruit more students.
Stampley described herself as a “world-traveling musician and a Grammy-nominated saxophonist,” adding that she also plays piano. According to her website, she recorded two albums: “Offerings of Love” in 2005 and “Language of the Heart” in 2016. The latter was nominated in seven Grammy categories, including Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, Best Instrumental Composition and Best Traditional R&B Performance. “I came back to my hometown to open a school to share the gift of music with the community, because we haven’t had a music school in the Maywood area in 50 years,” Stampley said.
