Since Illinois has been under lockdown due to COVID-19, municipal boards across the state have been utilizing Zoom and other videoconferencing technology to conduct business. The transition hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Case in point, the May 5 Maywood Board of Trustees meeting, which Mayor Edwenna Perkins suddenly canceled after roughly an hour of deliberation. Following social distancing guidelines, Perkins, along with Trustee Isiah Brandon and Village Manager Willie Norfleet Jr., were inside Council Chambers, seated at least three feet apart from each other. Trustees Miguel Jones, Antonio Sanchez, Nathaniel George Booker, Kimyada Wellington and Melvin Lightford, along with attorney Michael Jurusik, joined via videoconference, most of their faces shown See Meeting on page 3

A newly renovated and expanded emergency department at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, 701 W. North Avenue in Melrose Park, opened to the public on May 5. The $15.8 million Judd A. Weinberg Emergency
Department will allow the hospital to accommodate more daily patient visits, hospital officials explained in a statement. “An emergency department is the lifeblood of a community and a critical access point for lifesaving care,” said Jack Weinberg, the chairman of the
Gottlieb Memorial Foundation, which funded the renovated ER. Weinberg’s grandparents, David and Dorothy Gottlieb, founded Gottlieb along with other community leaders in 1961. “It is an honor to be part of such an important project that will continue saving lives and
supporting families for many years to come,” Weinberg said. In their statement, hospital officials said that they’re prepared to see more than 30,000 patients per year and additional ambulance bays will accommodate more ambulance traffic. See GOTTLIEB on page 5
