Dr. Martin J. Tobin, who the New York Times described as a “world-renowned expert on breathing,” sat calmly on the witness stand on April 8 to give his expert opinion at the trial of Derek Chauvin. On May 25, 2020, Chauvin, a former Minneapolis Police officer, placed his knee on the neck of George Floyd for roughly nine minutes while attempting to arrest the African American man. “Amid the current COVID pandemic, with its severe impact on the finances of many families, and the serious fiscal burdens St. Joseph High School has experienced during the past several years, as well as our steadily declining school enrollment, the Board of Directors has reluctantly made the recommendation to the Christian Brothers to cease operation of St. Joseph High School at the conclusion of the current academic year,” he explained. “After a comprehensive review by the leadership council of the Christian Brothers, the recommendation of our Board was accepted.” As she was walking out of school last
week, LaTyla Goodwin, a St. Joe’s sophomore, said she was surprised by the news. “I know there was speculation that the school would close last year and it didn’t, so to hear this now is really surprising,” she said. “I feel kind of sad, because I’ve only been here for two years and I thought I would graduate from here.” In a phone interview on April 13 afternoon, Hotek said that the news comes after years of financial struggles.
