Alum Peter Burdi wants to turn site of old school into community center, light manufacturing complex

The village of Westchester is looking into the prospect of 10900 West Cermak Rd., the site of the old St. Joseph High School, becoming a community center and light manufacturing complex. St. Joe’s closed at the end of the 2020-21 school year due to declining enrollment levels and mounting financial problems. The high school campus is owned by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, the high school’s sponsor. During a Committee of the Whole meeting on Jan. 25, the Westchester village board agreed to advance the proposal to the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission, where the plan will be vetted some more. Westchester native and St. Joe’s alum Peter Burdi is the developer behind the proposal to turn the 30-acre site, which sits in a newly created TIF [Tax Increment Financing] district, into a multipurpose commu-

(MWRD) to discuss the record flooding that ravaged the west suburbs that spring. “Too often the government is forced to address the symptoms of an issue and ignore the actual root of the problem,” Welch stated in a press release issued at the time. “Unfortunately, the longer we wait to address this issue, families are forced to deal with standing water and the health risks it could cause, costly clean-up, and having to discard family belongings or mementos,” he said. The flooding in 2013 had been the second time since 2010 that flash floods in suburban Cook County resulted in waterlogged personal possessions floating in basements deluged

by several feet of water. Hertestyne Watkins, of Maywood, told Village Free Press at the time that the waters took out her washer, dryer and furnace. Watkins was among dozens of residents who complained about the slow federal response, leaving some of them to coordinate their own grassroots relief efforts. One group, a partnership between the Quinn Community Center in Maywood and a group called Maywood Organized Voters Emerged and Engaged, acquired cleanup kits from the Salvation Army and distributed them to residents.
