Some students in Proviso High School District 209 may return to the classroom part-time beginning Feb. 18, according to an announcement from Superintendent James Henderson on Jan. 22.

The original date for students to return to school was Feb. 1, but in the announcement, Henderson cited availability of 3,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine for the district and talks with the Proviso Teachers’ Union that spurred the decision to push back the return-date.

“After speaking with the Proviso Teachers’ Union, we have decided to push the return to in-person learning date back to February 18,” reads the announcement.

The Maywood Police Department is in the throes of yet another COVID-19 outbreak, according to multiple employees and Maywood Village Manager Willie Norfleet Jr.

During an interview on Jan. 22, Norfleet confirmed that he is aware of “between five and eight” employees in the police department who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the last week.

According to several employees who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation, there may be up to 10 people

in the department, including multiple detectives and administrative personnel, who are currently out with the virus. Other employees are waiting for their test results to return and are out on unpaid sick leave.

The residential real estate market in Chicago and the suburbs finished 2020 strong, Crain’s reported on Jan. 22, when it published a detailed listing of median home prices “compiled from data provided exclusively to Crain’s by the Chicago Association of Realtors, Midwest Real Estate Data and Showing Time.”

The data shows that median home prices in most of the nine suburbs in the Village Free Press coverage area increased slightly. According to the data, median home prices among the nine suburbs are highest in Westchester, where the median home price is $259,000, and lowest in Stone Park, where the median home price is $179,000.

Maywood experienced the highest increase in median home prices, with $186,250 in 2020, a jump of 11 percent from the previous year.

Berkeley, with a median home price of $220,000, did was the only suburb among the nine that did not experience an increase. Crain’s had no data for Broadview.

The chart “covers home sales in all suburbs with at least 25 home sales in each of the years 2019 and 2020,” Crain’s reported, adding “the number of homes sold in the [Chicago] metro area during the year rose by 8.8 percent in 2020, to 120,256 sales. That’s the highest since 2012, according to Illinois Realtors’ archives.

“These increases are big, but pale in comparison to the nationwide surge in home sales,” Crain’s reported. “Home sales across the United States rose by a little over 22 percent in 2020, to the highest level since 2006, according to data released separately today by the National Association of Realtors.”

Maywood Police looking for armed robbery suspects Maywood Police are warning business owners in the suburb to be on alert after a string of armed robberies took place this week in Chicago and the suburbs, according to a statement police released on Jan. 21.

“In these incidents, offenders use vehicles that have been taken in armed robberies,” Maywood Police said. “During late evening or early morning hours, the offenders approach restaurants through the drive-thru, exit their vehicle, and enter the restaurant through the drive-thru window. The offenders are suspects in other shooting incidents in the 10th and 11th Districts of Chicago and should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Maywood Police said that they’re looking for three to four males dressed in black clothing and wearing masks. The men were driving a silver 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander, with Illinois license plate BN48756.

WGN said that, in addition to Maywood, the suspects may also be connected to armed robberies in the nearby suburbs of Summit, Matteson, Palos Heights, Oak Forest and Oak Park.

Bellwood man dies in I-290 crash that also injured 8-year-old boy A Bellwood man has died from injuries sustained in a Jan. 20 car crash on Interstate 290, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office and a Fox 32 news report.

Andrew Lane, 73, “died after driving the wrong way on” the expressway “and crashing into five vehicles, sending four others to hospitals including an 8-year-old boy,” Fox 32 reported.

According to Illinois State Police, Lane “entered the oncoming lanes of eastbound I-290 about noon Wednesday at 25th Avenue.” The State Police added that “while entering the offramp, he struck the passenger side of another car and continued driving.”

The 8-year-old boy “was also taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, state police said. Three other adults also suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.”

No contested races for Berkeley, Stone Park and Northlake village boards There will be no contested races for seats on the village boards in Berkeley, Stone Park and Northlake, according to village officials in those suburbs who responded to Village Free Press inquiries.

Berkeley There will be no contested races for open seats on Berkeley’s village, library and park boards during the upcoming April 6 election, according to Berkeley officials.

Berkeley Mayor Robert E. Lee, Jr., will run unopposed for a third term while incumbent Trustees Lawrence Hammar and Herbert Washington will run for additional terms. Berkeley Trustee Raymond “Rusty” Grenier, who has served on the Village Board since 2013, will not seek re-election, said Berkeley Village Manager Rudy Espiritu. Jason Matthews, who along with Hammar and Washington are running alongside Mayor Lee, will take the third open trustee seat on the board.

Current Berkeley Village Clerk Maria M. Rivera will not seek another re-election after serving one term. She’ll be replaced by Belia Nowak, who is running for clerk unopposed with Mayor Lee’s slate of candidates.

Espiritu said that only two candidates are running for the three open seats on the seven-member Berkeley Library trustee board. The candidates, Ellen Conlin and Roger Thomas, are both incumbent library board members. The library board will have to appoint someone to fill the vacant seat that will be open since there are only two candidates running, Espiritu said.

Maywood candy entrepreneur, ‘mother to all’ dies at 88 Chloree ‘Ree’Vaden operated popular candy truck for 25 years, son says

Chloree Vaden, a woman known throughout Maywood and beyond for her popular candy truck, died on Jan. 19. She was 88 years old. Vaden’s death was confirmed by her youngest son, Kendall Washington.

Generations of young people who grew up in Maywood and surrounding suburbs from the 1980s until the early 2000s were drawn to Vaden’s candy truck, which she named Ree’s Confectionaries. The truck, stocked with ice cream, penny candy and famous pickles, among other items, was a staple in Maywood for 25 years.

Washington said Vaden had a vision of owning her own ice cream truck one day. In the late 1970s, she retired from Montgomery Ward and moved to Maywood from the West Side of Chicago. Several years later, she realized the vision.

Through her truck, Vaden became a mother to a community of young people, said

Once, a group of young men were fighting near Vaden’s truck. Instead of driving off, Vaden exited her truck and scolded the young men, telling them to ‘cut it out!’

“And sure enough, they did, because they respected her like that,” Washington said, adding that Ree’s was never robbed in the 25 years his mother operated the truck.

“Guys that were considered gang bangers looked after her,” Washington said.

Washington said his mother’s truck also served as a cultivating ground for young people like Yolanda Weathers, who started working on Ree’s at 9 years old. By the time she finished at 21, Weathers had put herself through college, Washington said, adding that she’s now a registered nurse.

Tributes to Vander from some of the people who grew up on her treats spread across Facebook after news of her death.

“I’ve known this beautiful lady all of my life,” wrote Sonja McCoy. “She was my official math teacher, because I spent years counting my few coins to get treats from.”

“She took care of every child in Maywood,”

New coffee shop opens in Maywood The owners of Cielito Lindo, 612 W. Lake St. in Maywood, may have permanently closed the doors of the authentic Mexican restaurant, but they’ve bounced back with the opening of a coffee shop right next door at 612 W. Lake St. Daniela Rosas, the coffee shop’s co-owner, served her first customers in the store on Jan. 22. Among menu items are homemade bread, pastries, cappuccino, Mexican

coffee, milkshakes, crepes, grilled cheese, pizza, chilaquiles and empanadas, among others.

“The reason we decided to open this coffee shop is to not lose contact with you, since thanks to you we had the best experiences that will stay forever in the memory of Cielito Lindo Restaurant,” the owners wrote on Facebook.

Limited indoor dining now permitted in the suburbs

“We are still negotiating with the district,” said union president Maggie Riley. She said the union is meeting with Henderson and his team on Jan. 27 to discuss, among other things, the return date for students. “Health and safety concerns will be part of that discussion,” Riley said.

The hybrid model in D209 will consist of students attending classes in-person two days a week and learning remotely the other three. An option will be given and parents and students can opt to continue remote-only if desired.

At the Jan. 12 board meeting, member Theresa Kelly announced that the district was planning to bring students back to the hybrid learning situation on Feb. 1.

However, on Jan. 23 it was announced that returning to school will be postponed until Feb. 18 due to vaccine administration for teachers, staff and students that will be occurring within the next few weeks.

According to the announcement, D209 is receiving 3,000 doses of the COVID-vaccine “in the next few weeks and will establish a plan for safe distribution.”

The district plans to provide the first round of vaccinations to teachers and staff

On Jan. 23, suburban Cook County moved into Tier 1 mitigations under the state’s plan for mitigating the spread of COVID-19, which means that “bars and restaurants may operate during the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and indoor service must be limited to 25 people or 25 percent room capacity, whichever is less,” according to a statement released by the Cook County Department of Public Health.

“Tables must be six feet apart, all patrons must be seated, and wear a mask when not eating. Indoor service is limited to two hours and parties must not be larger than four people.”

He also stated that although the district won’t require employees to be vaccinated, it is strongly encouraged, and anyone who chooses not to won’t be exempt from returning to work.

Maywood names basketball courts after Doc Rivers

Board voted 3-2 for the measure on Jan. 19, amid tense debate over 2006 referendum calling for village to turn over parks to park district

During a regular board meeting on Jan. 19, the Maywood Board of Trustees voted 3-2 in favor of naming the popular basketball courts at Conner-Heise Memorial Park, located at 10th Avenue and Washington Boulevard in Maywood, the Glenn “Doc” Rivers Family Basketball Courts, after Maywood native son and NBA coach Glenn “Doc” Rivers, and his relatives.

The proposal, introduced by Trustee Miguel Jones late last year, also calls for the dilapidated courts to be renovated. At the Jan. 19 meeting and at a meeting last month, Jones presented a tentative budget of $20,000 for the four renovations, which would include installing new backboards, upgrading the outdoor lights and refurbishing the playing surface, among other improvements that would be done in phases.

The costs would be covered by a $15,000 grant from the Jose Antonio Grifols Lucas Foundation and a $7,600 sponsorship from Rivers himself, among other possible sources of private funding. The Jan. 19 vote empowers village staffers to start requesting proposals and bids from contractors.

Mayor Edwenna Perkins and Trustees Isiah Brandon and Jones voted in favor of the matter while Trustees Nathaniel George Booker and Kimyada Wellington voted against the measure. Trustees Antonio Sachez and Melvin Lightford were absent.

Trustees Booker and Wellington both said their nay votes were due to Jones’ proposed renovations of the park and not necessarily because they were against the naming of the courts. The two issues were combined into a single motion.

The vote happened amid a tense debate among board members about an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) that’s still being negotiated between the village and the Maywood Park District, which are each separate and independent taxing bodies.

The agreement, which calls for the village to transfer six parks currently under its administration over to the Maywood Park District, is the result of a 2006 ballot measure that passed with over 75 percent of the vote and called for 10 of the 11 parks in Maywood to be under the consolidated ownership of

The proposed joint meeting was recommended by Trustee Booker and Maywood Park District Executive Director Lonette Hall, who told board members on Jan. 19 that both the park district and the village have been accumulating substantial legal fees over the 14 years that have lapsed since the referendum passed. Maywood Village Manager Willie Norfleet Jr. also expressed support for the joint meeting.

Booker, despite introducing the measure, said he voted against it, because he wanted Jones to table his proposal for the court renovations and court naming, so that those issues could be included in the negotiations between the park district and the village board at the joint meeting. Jones, however, refused.

Hall has explained in the past that, while

renovations to the court fall in line with the park district’s multi-year comprehensive plan for the parks.

“We voted to give this park [ConnerHeise] to the park district already … why would we vote [on renovating the courts], if we’re going to transfer the land to them?”

Booker said at the Jan. 19 meeting, adding that he felt Jones was cutting into the park district’s authority and fueling “the negative narrative the village and park district can’t work together.”

“I’m not giving any directive to the park district,” Jones said on Jan. 19. “I’m not on that board. Until we officially make that transfer, we’re responsible for these parks.”

Jones said he was looking forward to meeting with the park district to discuss the transfer of the parks, but told Booker, “I’m not interested in you rolling [the proposal for the courts] into another discussion.”

Wellington said she voted against Jones’ proposal, because she didn’t have enough information on the specifics.

“For me to vote on this, I would like to see more information,” she said, especially given the public comments made at the last meeting. It’s a little disconcerting.”

On Jan. 13, members of the Berkeley Village Board and the Berkeley Park District board met for the first time to discuss the feasibility of constructing a new community recreational center on the grounds of Berkeley Park, the village’s flagship park located along Kouba Drive.

The proposed center is among the major priorities identified in the park district’s 2020-2025 Comprehensive Master Plan, which was presented to the Village Board last September.

The Jan. 13 meeting of an official ad hoc committee designed to discuss the proposed center signals just how serious the village and park district boards are about the matter.

“We want to be supportive of [the concept],” said Berkeley Village Manager Rudy Espiritu during an interview last week.

Peter Graham, the executive director of the Berkeley Park District, said last week the ad hoc committee will start meeting regularly “either next month or every other month.” Graham said he welcomes the

“I’ve been with the park district for 20 years,” Graham said. “All we have right now is a little building with a forty-by-forty foot room and a thirty-by-fifty foot multipurpose room, so we can only do so many programs at a time.”

Graham and Espiritu both acknowledged that the proposed center is still very much an idea at this point, with more details to come. But Graham said he can conceive of a 12,000- to 13,000-square-foot building

Westchester wants water, light at Norfolk Park

The village of Westchester and the Westchester Park District have signaled that they’re willing to collaborate in order to bring water and outdoor lighting to Norfolk Park, a dog park in the village located at 1112 Norfolk Ave. Village and park district officials discussed the proposed measures during a Committee of the Whole meeting on Jan. 12.

Westchester officials said the water source is located across the street from the dog park. Dean Hoskin, the executive director of the Westchester Park District, said at the meeting that the water will likely be used for watering the grass, although there was some

Abandoned car found half submerged in Des Plaines River After conducting additional searches along the Des Plaines River downstream of the crash site with a drone, first responders reported locating the body of a person in the river on the west side of the Barrypoint Road bridge at about 2 p.m. on Jan. 24.

At about 3 p.m., firefighters using a boat recovered the body, believed to be a female, from the water.

The investigation is being handled by the Illinois State Police, and while earlier information pointed toward possibly two people having been inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, it appears that investigators now believe there was only one

occupant.

Riverside Fire Chief Matthew Buckley, interviewed at the scene Sunday afternoon, told the Landmark that “through the investigative things that [state police and Lyons police] have done already this morning, they determined there was only one person in the vehicle, which is why we’re confident that this is the person from that vehicle.”

A Riverside police officer reportedly did make contact with the owner of the vehicle, a Chicago woman. It is unclear whether or not she may have information about what happened.

Mr. Beef coming to Harlem Ave. in Forest Park Mr. Beef, famous for Italian beef sandwiches and hot dogs, is opening at 123 Harlem Ave. in the former location of the

Long John Silver restaurant. Like the nowgone fast-food seafood restaurant, Mr. Beef will have a drive-through, as well as dinein service (when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted) and potentially an outdoor patio.

Some demolition on the current structure has already begun, though the new restaurant will rehab and use the existing building. The village is awaiting official building plans. Once plans are reviewed, permits will be issued.

The Mr. Beef in Forest Park will be the second restaurant under the same ownership as the Mr. Beef at 3917 N. Harlem in Chicago, according to an employee at that location.

This makes three drive-thru restaurants currently planned for Harlem Avenue: Mr. Beef at 123 Harlem, Chipotle at Harlem Avenue and Madison Street, and Taco Bell at 161 Harlem.

The business mogul requested patience and indicated his busy schedule would likely prevent prompt responses but urged Shalo to get into the coffee shop business as quickly as possible.

Local nature photographer’s eyes are wide open

Westchester photographer Wyndie Giles documents the wild things many west suburbanites overlook

Wyndie Giles sees the suburbs differently than most of us.

“If we go out in the forest right now, everything is brown, but I can pick out a deer, which is a different shade of brown,” she said last week.

“That stands out to me.”

Giles notices the nature that’s just beyond most people’s busy lives.

Now, with the pace of life slowed down due to the pandemic and with more people at home, perhaps now may be the time to take a cue from Giles.

“You have to keep your eyes open,” said the 37-year-old wildlife p h o t o g r a p h e r, whose images, available for sale at wyndiesphotography.com, show the less domesticated aspects of suburban living.

If you’re interested, this is daily life in Bemis Woods, 1100 Ogen Ave. in Westchester — with one exception, Giles spotted the fox on Mandel Avenue, two doors down from where she lives.

Giles said she grew up in La Grange Highlands. Her father, a high school teacher, was also deeply involved in the Boy Scouts and was camp director at a Boy Scout camp in northern Wisconsin, where Giles and her family would spend summers (she’s even adopted the state’s popular football team as her own).

“In Wisconsin, I spent every waking moment outside, running through the woods, swimming in the lake and hiking all over the place,” Giles said. “That’s what got me into nature.”

Giles said her father had a camera and would often take photos, which is how she picked up the craft. She took photography classes in high school and has taken online courses, as refreshers. Nowadays, Giles said, she rarely goes out without the Canon EOS 90D that she received as a birthday present from her husband a year ago.

“I’m always looking,” she said.

“I always have my camera.”

Giles emphasized that she shoots everything in manual mode and doesn’t retouch or Photoshop her images, explaining that she wants the viewer to see the unfiltered reality she sees.

Three’s company As PMSA’s enrollment increases, D209 looks to replicate the school at East and West

If all goes according to an ambitious plan laid out by administrators last week, there will not be one Proviso Math and Science Academy in Proviso Township High Schools District 209 — there will essentially be three.

In a lengthy interview on Sept. 4, D209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez explained that the district is seeking to open math and science academies at Proviso East and Proviso West that replicate PMSA’s academic curriculum while continuing to increase the student population at the selective enrollment school in Forest Park.

Rodriguez said that the expansion will benefit students in the district who have the capability of excelling in PMSA’s academically rigorous curriculum, which notably includes the International Baccalaureate Diploma program.

The program allows high school students the opportunity to earn college credits and is considered by some education experts to See PMSA on page 5
