Mayor Katrina Thompson, the first Black woman mayor in the suburb’s history, acknowledged the historic first during a meeting on Dec. 20, when Trustee Jarry Shelby was appointed to replace former trustee John Tierney, who retired last year. Shelby, who was sworn in by Broadview Clerk Kevin McGrier, will serve the remainder of Tierney’s term, which expires in 2023. During that December meeting, McGrier also swore in Ofc. Brandy Johnson and Det. Beata Grzymkowska. Thompson said Johnson is the first Black woman patrol officer in the village’s history while Det.

Grzymkowska is the first woman in Broadview history to be elevated to the rank of sergeant. The historic appointments were followed by the board approving appointments and reappointments to the village’s Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. All of those appointed or reappointed during the meeting were women, including Gwenevere Turner, Angenita Harper-Jordan and Diamond Portee. Thompson said Portee, a recent college graduate, is the youngest appointed official in Broadview. See HISTORIC FIRSTS on page 6
