Larry Shapiro, Former Educator, Jazz Enthusiast And Organizer, Dies At 79

Shapiro, a Bellwood resident and retired high school teacher, coordinated a senior club, revived live jazz music in Proviso, represented a congressman, and organized local political campaigns

Larry Shapiro, known throughout Proviso Township for his work mobilizing community members to diverse effects—from coordinating a club for hundreds of senior citizens to rejuvenating the township’s live jazz scene to organizing a winning slate of reform-minded library board and school district candidates—died earlier this month. He was 78. Shapiro’s family members said he died on Sept. 8.

A retired English teacher at South Shore International College Preparatory High School on Chicago’s South Side, Shapiro was beloved by generations of students, some of whom played roles in their former teacher’s post-retirement flourishing in the suburbs.

A Weekend Of Kayaking Renews

‘Twin Villages’ Vow

Trustees in Maywood, Westchester, and River Forest hosted a weekend of kayaking on the Thatcher Glen Pond in what they said is the latest Twin Villages Covenant initiative

Three west suburban lawmakers have teamed up to provide kayaking lessons to community members in what they see as a continuation of a formative pandemic-era program designed to strengthen bonds between Maywood and River Forest. Maywood Trustee Miguel Jones, River Trustee Erika Bachner, and Westchester Trustee Victoria Vann teamed up with the Westchester Public Library to sponsor the kayaking lessons that preceded each half-hour-to-45-minute-session of tranquility on Thatcher Glen Pond in River Forest on Sept. 14 and Sept. 15.

Native Plants In Bloom At Maywood’s Prairie Path

Conservationist and land steward Wyatt Widmer was tapped to restore native plants to the Prairie Path trailhead in Maywood

Thanks to local conservationist Wyatt Widmer, there’s a native plant renaissance happening at the Illinois Prairie Path trailhead on First Avenue, between Quincy and Wilcox streets, in Maywood.

The Illinois Prairie Path nonprofit is paying Widmer’s company, Wyatt E Coyote Ecological Services, to spruce up the path and provide some much-needed land stewardship. Widmer, who manages the 82-acre Wolf Road Prairie Nature Preserve in Westchester, said he’s seen some significant changes at the trailhead since he started work in April.

“The whole idea was to take what was already here and try to manage it as I would a prairie and slowly diversify it,” said Widmer, an associate director of the Save the Prairie Society, a nonprofit chartered in 1975 to protect the Wolf Road Prairie Nature Preserve in Westchester. He also manages the Nature

Preserve’s rare savanna, wetland, and remnant black soil prairie landscape that’s home to nearly 400 native plant species.

Just this year, we’ve seen a lot of good results,” Widmer said, pointing to some of the prairie blossoms on the trailhead. “These are what you’d find in the prairies and good savannah.”

Widmer said the Illinois Prairie Path nonprofit, which manages the 61-mile bike and walking path that cuts through parts of Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties foot the bill, while Maywood public works staffers and volunteers who cleaned up Maywood during the annual Village Pride, Village Wide event offered inkind assistance and additional hands.

Widmer hopes to establish a more formal volunteer program for anyone who wants to learn about growing and stewarding native prairie plants. In the meantime, he’s asking Maywood residents to express their support for the Prairie Path to their local elected officials.

would flank the path’s perimeter as it winds through Proviso Township suburbs, especially Maywood and Bellwood. The native plants aren’t just easy on the eyes.

“Over here, we’ve got this abandoned infill, acres of pavement, two blocks of scrapyard and junkyard — that’s countless chemicals and pollutants getting washed down the pavement with nothing to capture it before getting onto people’s properties,” Widmer said. “You’ve got kids playing back here, and people gardening and growing vegetables. All of these are activities of living.

“Native prairie is a massive free filter for pollutants and contaminants,” Widmer said. “It cleans up all the polluted surface water. That’s surface water that doesn’t have to be treated in water treatment plants that our tax money pays for. On top of that, prairie helps clean up air particulate pollution. They’re even better than trees at taking out all that carbon, gaseous pollution, and all those carcinogens out of the air and storing that stuff down in their roots.”

Widmer said the process of rejuvenating that part of the Prairie Path wasn’t particularly intensive.

“I let everything start growing in and saw all the different flowers growing underneath the grass and lawn,” he said. “I encouraged those plants to grow by giving them the

conditions in which they wanted to grow. It wasn’t this super intensive digging out stuff and replacing stuff. It was just treating plants to the disturbances they would have in the wild and they slowly formed this community that works and looks better.”

KAYAKING

Bonding on water

from page 1

“This is all about having neighbors in River Forest, Maywood, and Westchester come out and make organic connections, have a good time, and enjoy our natural resources,” said Trustee Jones on Sept. 15.

Jones and Bachner helped launch the Twin Villages Covenant in the summer of 2020, after George Floyd’s murder. The Covenant committed majority Black Maywood and majority white River Forest “to the principles of humanity, equity, and inclusion,” according to a draft of the document. “The covenant will guide the overarching spirit of our distinct towns to think as one and interact more collaboratively.”

Those involved with the Covenant had big aspirations and plans for how the neighboring suburbs. They included a Broadwaystyle musical produced by members of both communities, joint Juneteenth celebrations, and parades in honor of war casualties that would process through both villages.

Four years later, some plans have materialized and others haven’t. Jones said the annual Tour de Proviso, a bike riding event he co-founded in the fall of 2020 with Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson, might be seen as an extension of the Twin Villages Covenant. The inaugural Tour included Maywood, Broadview, and Bellwood, but over the years other suburbs, including River Forest and Westchester, have joined as event co-sponsors.

Last year, the Tour occurred in Westchester. This year, the Tour de Proviso will occur

on Oct. 5 in Bellwood. Community members can register for that event at bestofprovisotownship.org/tour-de-proviso. Jones said this year, unlike in years past, the race will feature two courses—one that’s 20 miles long. Jones said he hopes the kayaking event spurs more residents in Maywood to take advantage of the natural resources in their backyards, similar to how he was motivated to explore the Salt Creek Trail after going on one of Mayor Thompson’s constituent bike rides in 2020.

Westchester Public Library, said he and his staffers facilitated kayake training for more than 60 people over the weekend.

“People have had a blast when they’re out there,” he said as a few dozen people paddled on the surface of Thatcher Glen Pond on Sunday. “We had a family yesterday, I believe a grandma, a daughter, and three kids, and none of them had ever kayaked before, and the kids were all afraid of being on the water. But once they kayaked and understood there’s nothing to be afraid of they wanted to do it again.”

Jones said Trustee Vann was “the glue to bringing the Westchester library” into the conversation. He said the weekend event drew people from Maywood, River Forest, Westchester, Oak Park, and even Chicago’s Humboldt Park community, among other areas.

The trustees also circulated educational literature about everything from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s climate action plan to information on pollinator plant seeds.

“I was really motivated by Mayor Thompson and her ‘Ride with the Mayor’ events and I had never been on Salt Creek before,” Jones said. “I didn’t even know that existed and if I didn’t as an elected official, I was sure there were other residents who didn’t.”

Jones also hopes the kayaking event reignites official conversations about possibly making the Chicago Avenue roadway connecting Maywood and River Forest friendlier to pedestrians and bikers.

“People come out with their life vests, get trained up, and then spend about a half-hour to 45 minutes on the water in this pond area,” Bachner said. “We’ve even seen Herron here today flying over the pond. There’s not been a grumpy face after coming off the water.”

Jones said he hopes to do more events like the kayaking outing to bolster Maywood’s image as a riverfront community.

“Maywood is a riverfront community and those communities are highly sought out because people enjoy being around nature and animals,” Jone said. “That’s one thing I’m excited that we share with our neighbors like River Forest. Who doesn’t enjoy fresh air, being outside, and watching kids enjoy themselves and embrace our diversity?”

Broadview Native And Olympic Silver Medalist Returns Home

Kennedy Blades, who won a silver medal in wrestling at the Paris Summer Olympics, was honored in

Broadview

A few hours before the Bridging the Gap parade on Saturday, Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson and other village officials held a reception for hometown hero Kennedy Blades, who won a silver medal in the women’s 76 kg wrestling competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris last month.

Blades, 21, said she and her sister, Korina, started wrestling in Broadview when they were 7 and 6 years old (Korina’s 10 months younger).

“My dad would take us to this gym where he was training this MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter and my sister and I would mimic what our father did,” Kennedy said.

Their dad, Saul Pulido, eventually put his girls in boxing and jujitsu classes before they transitioned to wrestling, which would become their sole sport.

“We got very good, very fast,” Kennedy said. “After the first

week of wrestling, I decided I wanted to be a 2024 Olympic champ.”

With the help of their mom, Cindy Ramos, who worked extra hours, and their dad, who drove them to competitions across the country, the sisters quickly made names for themselves.

Blades said the key to her Olympic appearance and medal victory was mental maturity and God.

“My dad always told me that Jesus is our rock and God has a plan and a talent for everyone,” Kennedy said. “We need to use that talent to spread his word. My goal was to spread the word of Jesus through wrestling. I also leaned on God for everything I did and trusted his plan.”

Participants in Mayow Thompson’s Broadview Young Scholars program said they were grateful for the opportunity to see an Olympian from their hometown up close and personal.

“Today is a big blessing because I got to meet a silver medalist and I never got to meet one before,” said Julissa Mendez, 13. “I didn’t know she would be here until this morning so it was surprising because I’d seen her on the TV. That was cool. She’s a celebrity basically because the whole world got to see her.”

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to experience Kennedy and the Broadview Young Scholars program as a whole,” said Jada Williams, 13. “I want to thank the mayor for giving me a chance to experience this.”

Kennedy Blades, 21, won a silver medal in the women’s 76 kg wrestling event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. She was honored by Broadview Mayor, Katrina Thompson at Village Hall on Sept. 14.

SHAPIRO

A rich legacy from page 1

May 2013, just a few months after founding Village Free Press, a publication he regularly supported in numerous ways over the years.

At the time, Shapiro was Congressman Danny K. Davis’s suburban representative and was ending his tenure as former Maywood Mayor Henderson Yarbrough’s communications director. Before that position, he was then-state Rep. Karen Yarbrough’s chief of staff.

“Some people say, ‘Well, you’re just a spokesperson,’” Shapiro said. “And they believe that the only time people need one is when there’s some crisis like a shooting. But I understood the position as, ‘How do we communicate what we’re doing with the residents?’ So, for instance, during the flooding of 2008, we did robocalls for a week and a half. We created the Maywood News, which has over 400 subscribers. We started Coffee with the Mayor.”

As Mayor Yarbrough’s communications director, Shapiro also launched an initiative highlighting successful young people.

“I established a relationship with District 89 and we did the Honor Roll Reception. Students from every school in Maywood who made the honor roll got rewarded,” Shapiro said in 2013. “Then we added another element that we did at the board meetings. I wanted to do something for students who haven’t made the honor roll, but just need the motivation to do it. So we did the mostimproved students program.”

Shapiro would launch a similar initiative for honor roll students in Bellwood School District 88 in 2019.

Shapiro said he helped found the Maywood Senior Club because at the time, the village didn’t have a well-established senior club comparable to those in surrounding suburbs.

“Whenever I’d go to other villages like Broadview and Bellwood as part of Rep. Yarbrough’s staff, all of them had well-established senior clubs. Maywood had one of its own back then, but it was a hodge-podge compared to those in other villages. So, me and people like Dot Lindsey and Dorris Penington got together and we talked about what we could do. That’s how we came up with the concept that is the model for what we have today. And it’s a wonderful, wonderful thing.”

At one point, the club boasted nearly 200 members and held regular meetings featuring special guests, free legal and healthcare services, and free lunches, among other things.

In 2015, Shapiro teamed up with Theresa

and Joe Wilson, the owners of T&JJ’s Supreme Steaks and Catering at 718 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, to revive T&JJ’s Rebirth of Jazz nights, a bimonthly jazz series that attracted people from all over the Chicago area.

The restaurant had hosted live music events a decade prior, but those eventually tapered off. After relaunching the series, Maywood became a destination for jazz enthusiasts and world-class jazz musicians alike.

“We believe that there’s a jazz audience out there, but particularly on the West and South Sides, where there used to be a lot of jazz places,” Shapiro told Village Free Press in 2016. “They’re now closed and so musicians don’t really have anywhere to play locally. They end up playing downtown and in Europe. We’re now providing venues for artists to showcase their work.”

Audley Reid, a renowned saxophonist who performed at T&JJ’s frequently, was a case in point. So was his keyboardist, Self Black, who was nominated for a Grammy for his work playing with a band called Masque.

“We have some of the absolute finest musicians coming here,” said Shapiro. “We’ve got

people who have played with Ramsey Lewis, Grover Washington — some of the finest musicians in America.”

Shapiro’s outsized influence was felt within organizations he didn’t directly lead, such as the nonprofit Best of Proviso Township. In a Sept. 10 Facebook post, Randall McFarland, the organization’s co-founder, said Shapiro was one of the nonprofit’s “great allies.”

“The incredible support that he gave to our organization and community from behind the scenes is legendary,” McFarland wrote.

“Although Larry never needed acknowledgment for his assistance, it should be [noted] that some [of] our biggest and most successful events for local students [notably two youth outings to see popular movies] were possible because Larry immediately dug into his social network to ensure funding was provided for both events.”

Shapiro also influenced Bellwood’s politics. Roughly a decade ago, Bellwood School District 88 and the Bellwood Public Library regularly garnered headlines for allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and dysfunction.

District 88 meetings were regularly policed by armed, bulletproof vest-wearing security guards hired by the district’s former superintendent, Rosemary Hendricks. Meanwhile, the library board meetings were just as raucous, with police officers called to at least one of them.

Shapiro leveraged his communication skills and political relationships in helping to organize the Bellwood Dream Team slate of D88 school board and Bellwood Public Library board candidates who ran on reforming both institutions. In 2017, the slate won governing majorities on both boards, prompting major reforms and leadership changes.

Shapiro’s community advocacy work won him recognition over the years, including a Village Heritage Award from Operation Uplift, the Maywood nonprofit that operates the West Town Museum of Cultural History at 104 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood.

So far, we’re not aware of any information regarding funeral and/or memorial services. This article will be updated if/when we learn more.
