History On Display At Proviso Juneteenth Commemorations

There was no escaping the complicated racial history Juneteenth is meant to evoke during events across the suburbs

In 2021, Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford sponsored the bill establishing June 19—Juneteenth National Freedom Day—as a state holiday. Three years later, Lightford kicked off a litany of celebrations in her 4th District on June 13 with a community celebration at the Red Door Meeting Place, the event space she owns at 1519 Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview.

Inside the facility, the red, white, and blue Juneteenth flag is on display, along with the Pan-African flag that Gov. J.B. Pritzker ordered flown over the state capitol for the first time a few years ago.

“We were acknowledged as a people and put on display with the United States flag,” Lightford said. “And [the governor] raised that flag high. I told him I’d never forget it, and I won’t. That’s a memory etched [in my mind]. If you walk around the capitol and look at the pictures on the wall, all you see is the abuse of Indians and Black people. It’s all over. So the fact we could put that flag on the capitol meant a lot to the Black community.”

This year’s celebration and the hundreds of others across the state indicate how much Juneteenth commemorations have proliferated in the last several years. Like Lightford’s Pan-African flag, many local commemorations channeled the long and complicated racial history that Juneteenth is meant to evoke.

Lightford attributed much of the progress to George Floyd’s murder in 2020.

“His murder ignited the Juneteenth movement,” the senator said. “Before his murder, [the holiday] was talked about,

Juneteenth celebrations in Proviso Township culminated on June 22 with a scene so serendipitous that nothing like it will probably ever happen again. A Ghanaian king and Dr. Umar John-

son, the activist and self-styled “Prince of Pan-Africanism,” walked into Fred Hampton’s boyhood living room in Maywood. By the time they walked out, they were unofficial honorary residents.

Johnson and His Royal Majesty King Togbi Nyaho Tamakloe VI were special guests of George Stone III, the executive director of Operation Uplift. On Saturday, the nonprofit, along with the village of Maywood, hosted the Juneteenth National Freedom Day and Exchange Ceremony at the corner

of 5th Avenue and St. Charles Road in Maywood.

Sena Alinco, the host of the Progressive Minds Show–an online radio show and media nonprofit–and a native of Ghana, said King Tamakloe VI is head of the Anlo Kingdom, one of three historic kingdoms in Ghana. Anlo is based in the Volta Region, one of 16 administrative regions in the West African country.

but it wasn’t really captured by the people.”

This year, Juneteenth events have been pervasive, particularly across Chicago’s West Side and West Suburbs.

Perhaps nowhere in Proviso Township was that progress Lightford mentioned more prominently on display than in Westchester, which held the first major Juneteenth commemoration on Wednesday.

The commemoration started with a Freedom Walk from Broadview Baptist Church, 2100 S. 25th Ave. in Broadview. The walk culminated at Westchester Village Hall, 10300 Roosevelt Rd. in Westchester, where first responders raised the Juneteenth flag. And on June 22, the village held its first major Juneteenth festival at Gladstone Park, 850 Westchester Blvd.

During the flag-raising ceremony on June 19, Westchester Trustee Nick Steker outlined some of the village’s fraught racial history leading to Wednesday’s Juneteenth commemoration. Last year, Steker introduced the proposal to make Juneteenth an official village holiday, which the village board approved at a meeting on June 8, 2023.

“The original plaque for Westchester drafted on Aug. 1, 1930, contained the restrictions that no lot shall be sold or leased to any non-

Caucasian,” Steker said. “As recent as 1982, our lifetime, Westchester passed an ordinance banning real estate for-sale signs.

“Then the village adopted other measures restricting direct-mail advertising to property owners, telephone sales calls, or doorto-door sales. This was backdoor housing discrimination deemed unconstitutional and eliminated in 1995. As recently as 1995, can we say there was freedom for all?”

Westchester Trustee Victoria Vann, who organized this year’s Juneteenth festivities in the village, said that the local history Steker outlined “can be suppressed, but it can never be erased” before emphasizing Westchester’s racial, cultural, and economic diversity.

“We are a community of many nationalities and economic positions,” she said. “We all want peaceful lives … Our differences do not divide us; they enrich us, making us a more vibrant and resilient community. Like the threads of a beautiful tapestry, each unique and essential, our diversity weaves us together to create a stronger, more cohesive society.”

On Friday, hundreds of community members gathered in Hillside for Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch’s Annual Juneteenth Festival.

Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson, fresh off her suburb’s three-day Juneteenth Festival, held June 14 through June 16, sat inside a tent that served as a traveling museum showcasing pivotal points in Broadview’s history—from the village electing Thompson the first Black female mayor in 2017 to the appointment of the first Black police chief in 2021.

In 2020, Broadview’s village board passed an ordinance recognizing Juneteenth as an official holiday in the suburb — the first municipality in the state to do so. The text of the ordinance was printed in large fonts on one side of the tent. Thompson said the tent was a reminder of the suburb’s pioneering status.

“This Broadview Jubilee Exhibit talks about Broadview’s rich history and the legacies my administration has created and how we can keep [the history] alive for another 100 years,” Thompson said. “We have artifacts to show. This is proof. We were here.”

HANDS-ONLY CPR TWO STEPS TO SAVE A LIFE

People feel more confident performing Hands-Only CPR and are more likely to remember the correct rate when trained to the beat of a familiar song.

When performing CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute, which corresponds to the beat of the song examples

KING Maywood visit

from page 1

Before walking to the lot where the ceremony took place, the King held court inside Operation Uplift’s West Town Museum of Cultural History, 104 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, before an audience of mayors, including Maywood Mayor Nathaniel George Booker, Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey, Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson and Forest Park Rory Hoskins.

In his keynote speech during the ceremony, King Tamakloe VI emphasized some of the wisdom he shared with the mayors for a public audience before formerly apologizing for the role his ancestors played in the African slave trade and encouraging more African Americans to cultivate a deeper relationship with the continent.

“We are not here to make excuses,” King Tamakloe VI said. “Our forefathers did participate in the slave trade, and for that, we are truly sorry … So, as we say ‘sorry’ to you, we are looking at you to forgive us.”

The King then urged African Americans in the United States to cultivate deeper relationships with the continent by taking citizenship in African countries and merging Juneteenth commemorations with exchange

programs that include “clear atonement, clear repair and clear restoration” between continental Africans and African Americans.

“We are nothing else but Africans,” the King said. “Period. No matter which part of the world you live in … We are all Africans. It is an identity that no one can take away from you. It is yours. And we must strengthen that identity through education, ensuring that

our curriculum is clear about who we are as Africans and the African Diaspora—that we are one people.”

Dr. Umar Johnson, a school psychologist who has amassed a large online following through viral videos and memes on social media, spoke against children’s unsupervised use of the addictive technologies.

“Politically and psychologically speaking,

it’s very important that we not forget our experience,” Johnson said. “The future of this struggle will be passed onto our children … It is important that we make sure we spend time with them. It appears we liberate our children at the age of 13, and from 13 to 18, they often raise themselves. So many of us are co-parenting with social media. Instagram is not your baby’s dad. Facebook is not your baby’s mom. TikTok is not your co-parent. We have to raise children ourselves.”

Black Panther Party Cub Chairman Fred Hampton Jr., who visited Ghana a few years ago, recommended that all African Americans take the trip at least once.

“It should be mandatory that all of our people make that trip at least once in their life,” he said. “Everything in our community … is impacted by colonialism … The debt of this system is oppressing us—whether it be colonialism or neocolonialism.”

After the ceremony, King Tamakloe VI was driven to the boyhood home of Fred Hampton, 804 S. 17th Ave. in Maywood, where it dawned on him that Hampton Jr. was Hampton’s son. Hampton Jr. showed the King around the house, which he’s turned into a living museum to tell the story of his father’s life and the unjust systemic forces that led to his political assassination in 1969.

“This is the first traditional ruler to come into this home,” said Johnson. “This is history.”
