Westchester turns 100 this year, prompting me to create a list of some interesting historical tidbits I came across while looking back on the village’s history.
■ When it was founded, the village was a big deal and a bit mysterious until the Chicago Tribune got wind of developers’ plans
and published them in a report on Nov. 8, 1925. “Definite details about Chicago’s mystery suburb, the illusive ‘Westchester’ of Proviso, were made public last night, and indicate that the largest and most comprehensive suburban division development in the city’s history is about to be launched.” The town’s development was expected to cost up to $100 million (nearly $2 billion today) “in building
operations alone. Millions more will be spent in civic improvements with the idea of making Westchester one of the most attractive communities near Chicago.”
■ According to a 2021 Chicago Tribune article, the village’s longtime motto has been “A Good Place To Live.”

■ The village’s development “began in 1924 when a group of businessmen, headed by transportation magnate Samuel Insull, bought 2,200 acres of farmland south of what is now the Eisenhower Expressway,” that 2021 article reports. “Insull, who was born in London and educated at Oxford, intended to build a model English-style village. The group divided the area into regulation city blocks, paved the streets and sidewalks, put in storm sewers, sanitary sewers and water mains, planted stately elms and erected handsome concrete-and-cast-iro n street lights. Only then did they start to build the single-family houses-English tudors and bungalows-and two- and three-family apartment buildings. The dreamers incorporated the village Oct. 25, 1925. In 1930 the first of two two-room schoolhouses was built on Gladstone Avenue south of Roosevelt Road and named for Grant N. Britten, the first president of the school board. Builder George F. Nixon built its south side twin in 1931.”
■ Born in London, England in 1859, Insull was the man who “made cheap public utili-

electrical factory. “Do it big, Sammy... Make it go,” Edison reportedly told Insull. “It was a beginning from which General Electric would grow. When a company merger pushed Edison out in 1892, Insull left too, for the bustle of Chicago.”
■ According to the 2021 Tribune article, Westchester relied on Maywood for fire pro-
tection until 1953, when Maywood “said no more. A volunteer fire department equipped with one truck was in operation by January, 1955. The police department in 1950 consisted of a chief, a sergeant, one patrolmen and a single squad car. But crime was seldom a problem.”
■ John Prine, a Maywood native, was a mail carrier in the late 1960s whose route was in Westchester before he became a famous singer and songwriter. Prine said he would while delivering mail in the village.
■ According to the Save the Prairie Society, the Franzosenbusch Prairie House built in the 1850s “represents more than 150 years of local history, and is considered the oldest structure in Westchester.” It sits next to the Wolf Road Prairie, which is around 12,000 to 15,000 years old. According to the Salt Creek Greenway Association, the prairie “is recognized as one of the largest and best quality black soil prairies east of the Mississippi River.”
■ Westchester is home to an array of midcentury modern houses popular from 1945 to 1970, that feature wide walls, low footprints, flat rooflines, open floor plans, and short staircases connecting rooms.
■ According to its website, Westchester Public School District 92-5, “was created by taking sections of Bellwood SD 88, Lindop SD 92, and Hillside SD 93. The first school board meeting was held in January 1929 when the primary order of business after electing its officers was to authorize a referendum to support the newly created school district and authorize the construction of two schools.”

■ According to a 2019 Chicago Tribune article, many Westchester residents “define themselves by their parishes.” Former Westchester Mayor Sam Pulia joked “that he has a ‘mixed marriage.’ His wife is from Divine Infant parish, he said, and he is from Divine Providence.”
■ Former Westchester Park District director Gary Kasanders told the Tribune that year that the village— home to the annual Tournament of Champions, one of the premiere premiere sixteen-inch tournaments held each year in Mayfair Park— “is to 16-inch softball what Chicago is to baseball.”

Local youth bowler Ethan Molina recently won the Illinois State Proprietors’ Association Beat the Champs Tournament, Boys 11 and under division. There are four youth divisions based on gender and age, in addition to the staple men’s and women’s adult divisions.
Molina bowled a cumulative 747 in the finals and won a $400 scholarship. He bowls regularly at Hillside Bowl in Hillside. The tournament, having just concluded its 62nd year, added the youth division in 2022. All the net proceeds generated from the operations of the tournament are donated to a charity, with this year’s contributions being directed to the Bowlers to Veterans Link to support VA homes. This year garnered 14,500 bowlers, 850 of them youth bowlers 17 years or younger, 100 more than a year ago. Five thousand
dollars in scholarships were provided to the top 32. The tournament is sponsored and operated by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors’ Association, as well as Storm Bowling Product, Inc.
On April 9, the Maywood Police Department issued a safety alert to inform parents and guardians about a game gaining popularity among high school seniors, known as “Senior Assassin” or “Paranoia,” an activity involving students attempting to “eliminate” each other using water or NERF guns, often resembling real firearms, until a single participant remains. Police said the game has “led to incidents where law enforcement and bystanders have mistaken the toy weapons for real threats, resulting in potentially dangerous situations.” Read the full statement here.

Hillside, IL – The Hillside Police Department and Proviso Central Dispatch Center are enhancing their operational efficiency by utilizing different modules from the technology provider Frontline. One key module both agencies are implementing is for overnight parking requests, which is now live on the Village’s website at frontlinepss.com/ hillside-il
Previously, residents had to call dispatch to request overnight parking. With the new system in place, residents can now submit requests online, streamlining the process for both citizens and law enforcement.
Overnight parking is prohibited from 2 to 6 a.m. Each vehicle is allowed a maximum of three (3) nights per month. All street parking is prohibited after three (3) inches of snowfall, and overnight permissions are automatically voided. Overnight parking permission does not exempt vehicles from other Village parking regulations listed in the Village of Hillside municipal code.
Residents are encouraged to visit the Village website to access the new system and ensure compliance with all parking regulations.

Many women – particularly those in underrepresented communities – endure untreated symptoms of menopause that negatively impact their quality of life. In turn, Senate Majority Kimberly A. Lightford is fighting for more critical access to care.
“Menopause represents a crucial public health concern that demands our attention, particularly for women in marginalized communities,” said Lightford (D-Maywood).
“Health care disparities disproportionately affect Black and Latina women, leaving many without sufficient resources and support during this significant life transition.”
Lightford is working alongside Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton and Academy Award-winning actor and wellness advocate Halle Berry to ensure women have the knowledge and resources they need to receive appropriate menopause care. Senate Joint Resolution 25 would declare Oct. 12-18 Menopause Awareness Week. The resolution raises awareness about the expansive effects that menopause has on women’s health and how women can advocate for themselves.
A 2022 report from the National Institute on Aging found that Black women are less likely to receive menopause-related medical advice due to systemic healthcare barriers. Many endure untreated symptoms that negatively impact their work productivity and quality of life. These inequities make policy interventions like the Menopause Awareness Week resolution critical for ensuring fair access to care and workplace protections.
“Women’s health is a public health priority—and menopause advocacy is long overdue,” said Lieutenant Governor Stratton. “In a time when access to care and medical research are under attack, we cannot afford to let women’s health needs be ignored. Illinois is leading the way in ensuring that menopause is recognized, researched, and addressed through policy. We are not just having the conversation—we are taking action to close the gaps in care, workplace protections, and medical research.”
The Senate adopted the resolution Friday.
