Launches “Your Town, Your Vote” Campaign To Boost Election Turnout in Local Races

C00k County Clerk Monica Gordon’s office hopes cookcountyclerk.com/elections web page will boost low voter turnout

As the April municipal elections approach in suburban Cook County, Clerk Monica Gordon is putting out a call to voters to encourage participation and raise awareness about local elections, which have historically had an alarmingly low turnout rate, despite their hometown significance.

The approaching April 1 Consolidated Election will determine leadership for municipal governments, school boards, park districts, fire protection districts, and other key community institutions. These positions determine how lo-

Candidates Address Issues At Nonpartisan Forums Across Township

Nonpartisan community organizations across Proviso Township have hosted various forums for candidates running in key local races in Hillside, Maywood, and Westchester.

Hillside Mayor Joe Tamburino and challenger Roger Romanelli attended a candidates’ forum at Priscilla’s Ultimate Soulfood at 4330 Roosevelt Rd. in Hillside on Feb. 17. The forum was moderated by Remel Terry, the second vice-president and Political Action Committee chair for the Chicago Westside Branch NAACP.

Mayor Tamburino and Romanelli sparred over a wide range of topics, including whether the prospect of introducing residency requirements for village employees, the construction of the Hillside Senior Apartments at the southwest corner

Broadview Swears In First Black Female Firefighter

With Women’s History Month as the background, the Village of Broadview Board of Trustees has approved the appointment of Jasmine Williams as a firefighter in the Broadview Fire Department, making her the first African American woman to serve in this role in the village’s 110-year history. Williams becomes only the third woman to serve as a Broadview firefighter. Mayor Katrina Thompson and the Board of Trustees celebrated this historic milestone, recognizing the significance of diversity and inclusion in the village’s public safety sector.

“Today you see the first African American woman that’s being sworn in as a firefighter, and that’s really showing what diversity looks like in departments across this nation,” said Thompson during the ceremony. “So as we go through Women’s History Month, and we acknowledge the work that women have gone through, even as it relates to voting, it took women to change that narrative, and

you standing here as a young African American woman who is taking a chance on us. You don’t know what that means.”

The evening was also one of reflection and gratitude as the Board and the Mayor honored the retirement of Broadview Police Lieutenant David Yurkovich, who has dedicated 27 years of service to the community.

“We thank Lt. Yurkovich for his years of dedication and selfless service to Broadview,” said Thompson. “His contributions have helped shape the strength and integrity of our police force, and he will always be part of the Broadview family.”

Broadview looks to the future and honors its legacy, the mayor said.

“With the appointment of Jasmine Williams as a firefighter and the celebration of Lieutenant David Yurkovich’s distinguished career in law enforcement, the Village of Broadview continues to embrace progress while honoring its legacy of service of its first responders,” said Thompson.

cal tax dollars are spent and oversee essential services that impact residents’ daily lives.

While presidential elections garner an average of 70 to 72 percent turnout in suburban Cook County, local elections struggle to engage even 15 to 20 percent of eligible voters, a trend that Gordon believes must change.

“Whether it’s sending your children to local schools, checking out books at the library, or having the peace of mind that police and fire service is just a phone call away, decisions made at the local level shape our communities in ways that directly impact our daily lives,” said Gordon.

The Clerk’s Office is launching a “Your Town, Your Vote” voter turnout campaign to help educate voters about the significance of local elections and ensure they are aware of their options for casting a ballot.

“Votes cast in local elections have a direct connection to the funds that flow to local village halls, school boards, township offices, police and fire districts, among many others. Remember, it is Your Town, Your Vote,” said Gordon.

Tamburino is running for his 12th term with the Citizens Improvement Party slate, which includes sitting Clerk Linda Gould and trustee candidates Claudell Johnson, John N. “Jack” Kramer, and Frank J. Lomelli.

Romanelli is running with the Hillside Unity Party, which includes clerk candidate Elva Arroyo, and trustee candidates Tommie Beasley, Keegan Goss, and Rhonda Taylor. The forums are available for viewing online at youtube.com/@VoteforHillside.

Earlier this year, a coalition of nonpartisan organizations throughout Proviso Town-

ship formed Proviso Votes—an initiative to provide information and awareness about critical community issues ahead of elections in Proviso Township.

The affiliated organizations include Village Free Press, Best of Proviso Township, the Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance Network, Neighbors of Maywood Community Organization, the Maywood Public Library, the Westchester Public Library, the League of Women Voters-Proviso Township, and the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership.

Proviso Votes hosted two candidate forums at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, on Feb. 22 and March 1. The Feb. 22 forum hosted candidates running for Maywood mayor and trustee while the March 1 forum was open to candidates running for village clerk, library trustee, park district commissioner, and MaywoodMelrose Park-Broadview District 89 school

board. Both forums were moderated by Village Free Press Publisher Michael Romain.

The April 1 election could be one of the most important in Maywood’s history, with voters having to decide if they buy into incumbent Mayor Nathaniel George Booker’s comprehensive vision to consolidate even more power into the mayor’s office, dissolve the Maywood Park District so that the village can run parks and recreation, create four new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts, and potentially acquire libraryowned vacant land for a future municipal campus, among other key aspects of the mayor’s vision.

But the mayor himself and all but one of the candidates running on or in alliance with his Maywood Together Party slate were no-shows at both Proviso Votes candidates’ forums—the only nonpartisan, community-led forums specifically for Maywood candidates and devoted exclusively to

Maywood issues.

In an email, Booker declined Proviso Votes’ invitation to the forums on behalf of his entire slate, referencing the Maywood Together Party’s involvement in “several community events taking place” on Feb. 22 and a Get Out the Vote event on March 1. Maywood library board candidates who attended the March 1 forum were asked about their opinions on a potential land sale to the village, and during a virtual Zoom forum on March 1 park district candidates were asked whether, if elected, they’d vote to dissolve the park district—one of the many steps necessary for the village to become the sole steward of parks and recreation. Maywood mayoral and trustee candidates who attended the Feb. 22 forum were asked if they’d pursue the new TIF districts. The village board candidates also discussed the strong mayor ballot question.

Another major issue addressed during the Feb. 22 forum was the annual pay for the mayor, which would go from $15,600 to $65,000 effective May 20. The pay raise was voted 4-3 by the village board last year at the prompting of Mayor Booker, who argued that he deserved a raise because due to the many hours he works—even though the raise will go to whoever is elected mayor in April. The village’s ordinance calls for a part-time mayor.

All of the mayoral candidates in attendance—sitting trustees Isiah Brandon and Aaron Peppers (who opted to run as a writein candidate for mayor rather than for reelection as a trustee), and former Maywood liquor commissioner Mary “May” Larry—said they would not take the raise, adding that they would either give the money back to the village or donate it to local nonprofits. Quincy Johnson, a write-in candidate for mayor, said he had to work during the Feb. 22 forum.

Brandon’s People’s Choice Party and Larry’s My Maywood Party are the only other formal slates with candidates running for village clerk, trustee, and mayor. Like the Maywood Together Party, the People’s Choice Party is also endorsing candidates running for seats on the library and park district boards. Both Maywood candidates’ forums are available for viewing online at ProvisoVotes. org, where you can also read the questionnaires for Maywood candidates who completed them.

On Feb. 28, the Westchester Public Library, the League of Women Voters Proviso, and Proviso Votes co-hosted a pre-recorded Zoom forum for Westchester village president candidates. Westchester Village President Greg Hribal and Trustee Gia Maria Benline—the only two village president candidates on the ballot—attended the virtual event, which did not have a live audience. The forum was moderated by Peggy Kell, a

member of the League of Women Voters LaGrange Area.

Hribal, the village’s former acting manager and a 30-year village employee, is running with trustee candidates Brian Cross, Terrance Jones, and incumbent Trustee Evie Slavic, on the Westchester Progress Party slate. Hribal seeks his first full term as village president after he was elected as a write-in candidate in April 2023. Hribal completed the term of Westchester’s former village president, Frank Perry, who died in December 2021 — less than a year into his first term.

Benline, a realtor who is running with trustee candidates Kevin Canfield, Kevin McDermott, and Edward S. Lezza, Jr., was elected to the village board in 2023.

Benline and Hribal addressed a range of topics and issues, including the fallout from the board’s discovery in 2022 that two Enterprise Drive buildings the village was supposed to be renovating and turning into municipal facilities were empty. Since then, the village has tried unsuccessfully to sell the buildings and a state law enforcement officials have opened an investigation into the matter. The two candidates also traded competing approaches to moving village hall, among other things. The forum is available online at youtube.com/ watch?v=HCDjdlWQsPM. A pre-recorded
