Many Illinois residents will be able to use the IRS Direct File service to electronically prepare and file their 2024 federal tax returns for free.
Almost 2 million eligible Illinois taxpayers will be able to use Direct File starting Jan. 27. Gov. J.B. Pritzker said this service will, “put money typically spent on tax preparation services back into the pockets of hardworking families across Illinois.”
After users file their federal taxes, Direct File will connect user to MyTax Illinois, Illinois’ free state income tax filing system where they can file their Illinois state returns. The program is accessible on mobile phones, laptops, tablets or desktop computers and users will have access to help through a chatbot in both English and Spanish.
“We understand that a significant amount of time and money is spent every year to ensure personal income tax returns are filed accurately and on time,” said Illinois Department of Revenue Director David Harris. “This integration will help relieve stress and financial burden for taxpayers.”
The IRS created Direct File as a result of the Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed in 2022 by Presi-

A new Illinois General Assembly was sworn in for the next two years on Jan. 8 with the House and Senate ceremonies taking two starkly different tones.
The House inauguration ceremony,
conducted in an auditorium on the University of Illinois Springfield campus, was at times boisterous, featuring speeches that were more politically divisive and sometimes led to jeering.
House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, who was reelected to his third term leading the chamber, tried to strike
a chord of unity as he exhorted his colleagues to work together to meet the challenges of what he called a unique moment in history.
“The urgency of this moment shows that unity is our power,” he said. “Mem-

The 2022 Annual Tax Sale, conducted by my office and directed by Illinois law, was probably a worrisome process for property owners whose property taxes were delinquent and sold. Understanding how the process works and what steps to take can make the difference between catching up on your taxes or risking losing your property.
Each year, delinquent property taxes are offered at the Annual Tax Sale so that local governments receive the revenue needed to operate. The property itself is not sold, but a third party pays the outstanding tax amount and places a tax lien on the property.
The tax buyer then receives the right to repayment of the taxes, with applicable interest—or the right to go to court to request ownership of the property, if payment is not received. Tax buyers may not change the taxpayer’s information or take any action regarding the property before obtaining a tax deed through the court.
If your taxes were sold at the Annual Tax Sale, here are the next steps:
Request an “Estimate of Redemption”: This document is obtained through the Cook County Clerk’s Office. It will provide a detailed calculation of the total amount you need to pay to redeem (payback) the taxes for your property.
Redeem your taxes: You have the right to regain control by paying the tax buyer the amount they paid at the Annual Tax Sale, plus applicable interest. This process, called redemption, is also handled through the Cook County Clerk’s Office.
Once a tax buyer acquires your tax debt in the Annual Tax Sale, the only way to redeem your delinquent taxes is to pay the debt, interest, and fees in a single payment. Partial payments are not accepted. That is why it is crucial to redeem your taxes as soon as possible to avoid an increase in the amount owed.
Property owners have 2 ½ years to redeem sold taxes for residential properties and approximately one year to redeem sold taxes for commercial properties. After this period, the tax buyer can go to court to obtain ownership of your property.
If your 2022 delinquent taxes were sold at the Annual Tax Sale in December 2024 and you are unable to redeem your taxes, consider seeking an attorney about other options available to resolve your situation.
Acting quickly, understanding the process, and taking advantage of available resources will help you resolve this situation and maintain control of your property. More information is available on my office’s website, cookcountytreasurer.com.

Bellwood native Ivoryana Neal, 21, was one of two young adults presented with the 2nd annual John Lewis Youth Leadership Award (JLYLA) by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. The other winner was Anthony Ray Wright Jr., 23.
“It’s wonderful to honor the impact of the late Congressman Lewis by recognizing two incredible young Illinoisans for their significant service to our communities,” Giannoulias said. “Ivoryana and Anthony are truly carrying out the spirit of Congressman Lewis’ legacy.”
Neal, a December 2024 graduate of Spelman College, is passionate about criminal justice reform and has helped educate peers on the need for more re-entry support for formerly incarcerated individuals and their families. Neal’s firsthand experiences interning with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office in Atlanta and with the Broadview, Illinois, police department have informed her calls for reform with real-life facts. Wright, the author of two self-published novellas focused on Black History, grew up in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. After graduation from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign in May 2024, he returned to continue the work he had begun as an intern at Introspect, a not-for-profit. He helped re-envision a Black History curriculum that engages today’s teens by having students interview their grandparents about their part in the Great Migration. Wright also worked tirelessly in 2024 as a newly trained voting deputy

registrar, helping many Chicago youth register to vote, study the issues and cast their first ballots.
Giannoulias also named 22-year-old school social worker Reagan Johnson of Vienna, Illinois, as first runner-up in the 2024 program. Johnson, born and raised in Illinois’ southern coal country, was recognized for raising funds for bus transportation so that the 400 high school students living in Johnson County’s remote and isolated 340 square mile service area could have access to after school programming in nature and the arts. This is the second year of Illinois’ participation in the NASS JLYLA program. Competitors must be between the ages of 18 and 25, Illinois residents and have established a record of service and leadership that meets the ethos of Congressman John Lewis’ legacy. Giannoulias plans to accept nominations for the third annual Illinois John Lewis Youth Leadership Award in Fall 2025.

■ Mobile driver’s licenses and state ID’s
■ Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says he hopes to bring mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs to iPhones by the end of the year.
Giannoulias announced Monday that his office has officially started working with Apple to allow users to access their driver’s licenses and state IDs digitally on their iPhone or Apple Watch. He said in a news release he expects to expand these features in the future for additional digital wallets, such as Google Wallet for Android users.
Lawmakers passed House Bill 4592 last spring, allowing the secretary of state to issue mobile IDs and driver’s licenses. When it rolls out, Illinois will be the 11th state to adopt mobile IDs.
But a mobile driver’s license and ID would not replace physical cards.
The cards would be issued “in addition to, and not instead of” a physical ID, under the law.
Illinoisans can now vote on whether they want a new state flag.
The Illinois Secretary of State’s office officially opened the voting portal on Friday, and votes will be accepted through Feb. 14.
Voters can choose from 10 designs for a new flag, the current flag, the 1918 centennial flag or 1968 sesquicentennial flag. Individuals can vote for one flag once every 24 hours and may select the same or a different flag each day.
To view the designs and vote, visit www. ilsos.gov/stateflag.
The online vote will be non-binding but will inform a report that the Illinois Flag Commission is set to release to the General Assembly by April 1. After the commission delivers its final report – with a recommendation as to whether the state should adopt a

new flag – the Illinois General Assembly will have the choice to adopt a new flag or keep the old one.
The flag commission is made up of current and former lawmakers, representatives of state agencies and other advocates appointed by current state officials. It was created in the previous General Assembly by Senate Bill 1818, sponsored by State Sen. Doris Turner, of Springfield, and Rep. Kam Buckner, of Chicago. The commission selected the 10 finalists in December from 4,844 entries.
The possible new flags come from a variety of designers, including born-and-raised Illinoisans, students and other young people, longtime residents and the great-grandchild of James McCartney – a Civil War veteran and past Illinois attorney general.
The secretary of state’s office has a sign-up page for Illinois residents to receive updates about the program, including when mobile IDs become available for iPhone users.
The move toward digital IDs is part of Giannoulias’ “commitment to modernizing the office,” according to his office.

But there was less talk about unity and cooperation from Republicans who spoke at the ceremony.
Rep. Steve Reick, R-Woodstock, spoke to nominate Republican Tony McCombie as speaker. He said he agreed that cooperation and compromise are needed to solve the state’s problems. But he also criticized “people on both ends of the political spectrum” for pushing “ideas on which there is nothing resembling a social consensus.”
“What results are laws that offend the heart-felt beliefs of people whose voices are not being heard and toothless resolutions that call for us to separate this state from a world class city that’s being driven into the ground,” Reick said.
Meanwhile, McCombie, of Savanna, who was reelected to her second term as minority leader, used her speech to vent some of the frustration she and other Republicans have felt at being locked out of negotiations with majority party Democrats on major legislative issues.
of Senate president and Senate minority leader, respectively.
The mood in the chamber, where bipartisan engagement has been more common in recent years, was far more reserved than in the House.
“While they may not always see eye-toeye, they share a mutual respect for each other, our caucus and the constituents that allow them to work together for the good of Illinois,” Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said of the two leaders in her nominating speech for Curran. “This calm dialogue may not be the exciting drama that you see in D.C.”
Harmon is beginning his fourth term as the chamber’s leader after being elected by his caucus in January 2020 and serving in the Senate since 2003. His 2020 opponent in that contest, Sen. Kimberly Lightford, DWestchester, gave the nominating speech for Harmon, saying the suburban Democrat has proven to be an effective leader.
“In an era of deeply political division, Don stands apart through his remarkable ability to unite people,” Lightford said.
“Let’s rise to meet the moment together. Let’s use this time and all that has been given to us to do the work and move Illinois forward. Winners do the work.”
EMANUEL ‘CHRIS’ WELCH Illinois House Speaker
“I, like many, were disappointed with our election outcomes and the ability for us to secure more Republican seats to bring some balance to the General Assembly,” she said. “However, this was not due to a lack of good candidates or hard work, but due to special interest in Illinois’ gerrymandered maps, the most outrageous maps in the nation.”
Senators from across Illinois were sworn in on Jan. 8 in the newly renovated Senate chamber. The room had been closed for 2 ½ years while the Senate conducted business in a modified auditorium in a separate building on the capitol complex.
Sen. Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, and Sen. John Curran, R-Downers Grove, were reelected by their colleagues to their positions
The 104th General Assembly has a lengthy to-do list, ranging from eliminating a projected $3.2 billion budget deficit to reforming transit in the Chicago area.
In a news conference following inauguration, Gov. JB Pritzker spoke about the budget challenges he faces this spring ahead of his late February budget address.
“When we talk about priorities, prioritizing the fiscal health of the state has been, you know, among the most important things that I’ve, I think, achieved and will continue to prioritize,” Pritzker said.
Pritzker also faces a reemerging challenge from his first term as governor: a Donald Trump presidency.
Pritzker said he has general concerns about Trump’s plans, particularly as they pertain to health care. But he is taking a waitand-see approach before deciding specific actions to counter the Trump administration’s initiatives.
He noted Trump is often “unpredictable.”
“There’s not a specific thing that I can point to though because he hasn’t taken office yet,” Pritzker said, adding he’d remain “on guard” for what actions may be needed in the future.
