Richard Hunt’s Proviso presence

Objectors say he’s disqualified under 14th Amendment for role in Jan. 6 Capitol riots By PETER HANCOCK Capitol News Illinois

The township, Maywood in particular, played a role in the famous sculptor’s storied career By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Richard Hunt, the famous Chicago sculptor who died last month at 88, has been getting his posthumous flowers from all over the world. In its obituary of Hunt, the New York Times quoted critic Hilton Kramer, who wrote that “there are really very few American sculptors of Mr. Hunt’s generation who have produced a

comparable body of work so early in their development.” Hunt became famous in his 30s. In 1971, the South Side native landed a coveted solo retrospective in the Museum of Modern Art — the first Black sculptor to do so. He was the youngest artist to exhibit at the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle. In 1968, he became the first Black artist to land appointed to the National Council of the Arts. The accolades go on and on.

Trump faces ballot challenge in Illinois minutes after filing his petitions

But few of the many tributes flowing across the world since Hunt’s death have focused on the role of Proviso Township, particularly Maywood, in shaping Hunt’s storied career and continuing his rich legacy. For one, Hunt was taught by the renowned sculptress Geraldine McCullough, who lived in Maywood before moving to Oak Park. McCullough, who died in 2008 See RICHARD HUNT on page 5

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is now among the growing list of states in which former President Donald Trump will have to fight to have his name appear on the 2024 election ballots. A group of five voters filed a joint objection to Trump’s candidacy on Jan. 4, arguing that Trump should be disqualified under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits anyone who took part in an insurrection against the United States from holding federal office. The objection alleges that Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 elections, including his involvement in events leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, amounted to an insurrection. n Tuesday, Jan. 2, I took a trip to Bookends & Beginnings, a quaint little bookstore in Evanston, and was drawn to “The Loneliness Files,” a small “memoir in essays” by the poet Athena Dixon, who documents her agonizing experience of living alone during the pandemic. “Alone seems like a choice,” Dixon writes. “Loneliness doesn’t.” Dixon shares the story of Joyce Carol Vincent, a London woman in her late 30s who “died in front of the television” in 2003, her body undiscovered until three years after her tragic demise. Dixon sees herself in Joyce, prompting her to investigate what may have resulted in Vincent’s reclusiveness and to wonder whether her own loneliness (Dixon is single and childless) might be setting her up for the same fate. “I am overwhelmingly lonely,” Dixon writes. “And I cannot believe that doesn’t matter and I will not believe there are not scores of others like me. I know there are those who feel the world is always just a little too far away or a little too close—never comfortable in either situation. Those who love to be a part of all life has to offer fully, but something just doesn’t click. Those people who crave the smallest of touches but get lost in the fear of what could go wrong, not all that could be right.” This passage pulled at me because I count myself among this crowd. I am often alone and aloof from the world — often by choice. Despite my career in journalism, I can only take people and social experiences in relatively small doses before I become overwhelmed, overstimulated and exhausted. This sensibility results in my almost preternatural ability to be completely content by myself. It also fuels my writerly powers of observation. But sometimes my choice to be alone turns into loneliness with about as much advance warning as a tsunami’s trough and I’m suddenly engulfed in an overwhelming sense of abandonment, of being left behind by the hyperconnected world. About a decade ago, I lived with my grandmother in the basement of my father’s house in Peoria. She and I bonded over our mutual misanthropy and twin tendency to prefer the

So, when I began reading Dixon’s book, I immediately thought of my grandmother, who, depressed for most of her life, would often respond whenever I asked her how she was doing by simply saying, “I’m here.” “When coworkers ask me, virtually or now in person, how I am, I often answer ‘I am here.’ It means that I am here because I am obligated and I must make money to survive,” Dixon writes. “It means that given the opportunity I would sit in silence in my living room and listen to the cars rush by on the streets below.” “You know, I could be dead for four days before anybody discovered me in that basement,” my grandmother told me one morning over coffee in 2009. “It’s so lonely.” The morning after I bought Dixon’s book, my sister called to tell me that our grandmother had died — alone in a Peoria hospital, just hours before her closest relatives could rush to her bedside. After hanging up, I swaddled myself in the bed sheets and, alone in the dark of dawn, I wept. One of the first phone conversations I had on the day of my grandmother’s death was from a local mayor who was calling to complain about the word “elderly” in an article I’d published in November. He wanted me to know that the term is offensive and ageist. I was embar-

TRUMP from page 1 “Consequently, Donald J. Trump is disqualified from, and ineligible to hold, the office of President of the United States,” the objection states. “Accordingly, his nomination papers are invalid under Illinois law because when Trump swore he was ‘qualified’ for the presidential office, as required by (state statute), he did so falsely.” Jan. 4 was the first day for presidential candidates to file petitions for the March 19 primary ballot. According to the Illinois State Board of Elections’ website, the Trump campaign filed its petitions at 8 a.m., along with fellow Republican candidates Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and Texas businessman Ryan L. Binkley. On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden’s campaign filed petitions, along with Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips and author Marianne Williamson.

vfpress.news As of Jan. 4, Trump was the only candidate facing an objection. The deadline for filing objections is Friday, Jan. 12. Similar objections have been filed in multiple other states. So far, however, they have only been upheld in Colorado and Maine. The Trump campaign has filed appeals in both of those cases, including a direct appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court in the Colorado case. Matthew Piers, a Chicago-based attorney who filed the Illinois objection, said in an interview that the cases highlight the differences in election laws among the various states. In some states, he said, primary elections are considered operations of political parties, not the states themselves, and therefore are not subject to rules set by the state. But in Illinois, he said, state law specifically requires candidates to state on their nominating petitions that they are qualified for the office they are seeking. Article II of the U.S. Constitution requires presidents to be “natural born citizens” who are at least 35 years of age and who have been residents of the United States for at least 14 years.

But the 14th amendment – enacted in the aftermath of the Civil War – adds more conditions, barring any former public officials who previously took an oath to support the Constitution from holding certain public offices in the future if they ever engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States or gave aid or comfort to its enemies. The objection cites numerous other government agencies and officials who have concluded that the events of Jan. 6, 2021, were an insurrection, including decisions of the Colorado Supreme Court and the Maine secretary of state to keep Trump’s name off the ballot in those states. The objection also cites several recent court rulings, including some involving people convicted of crimes stemming from the Jan. 6 attacks on the Capitol. In an email, Illinois Republican Party Chairman Don Tracy said the state party is neutral in the GOP primary but that the issue of Trump’s candidacy should be decided by voters. “This attempt to remove President Trump from the ballot without due process is an anti-

democracy attempt to limit the voting rights of Illinois citizens and should be dismissed outright,” Tracy said. Legal challenges to a candidate’s qualifications for office are not uncommon in Illinois. Dozens of them are currently pending at the Illinois State Board of Elections against candidates for the General Assembly and various judicial positions, mostly based on claims that petition signatures were invalid or insufficient. In 2016, a challenge was filed against Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton based on her petition signatures. And in 2012, Democratic President Barack Obama faced three nearly identical challenges to his candidacy based on false allegations about his citizenship. State Board of Elections spokesman Matt Dietrich said in an email the objection to Trump’s candidacy will be investigated by a hearing officer who will make a recommendation to the board’s general counsel. The full, eight-member bipartisan board will consider the challenge at a meeting Tuesday, Jan. 30.

That was the inspiration for ‘Phoenix,’ but actually, what I tried to express in the piece was something more universal … that universal struggle of peoples and things, their wrestling with adversity, their eventual triumph and the perfection that results from struggle.” “Sculpture is not a self-declaration,” Hunt once said, “but a voice of and for my people MICHAEL ROMAIN — over all, a rich fabric; under “Reaching Up, Reaching Out,” a sculpture by Richard all, the dynamism of the AfriHunt that sits in front of the Maywood Public Library. can American people.”

In 1979, the organization’s primary focus became the global eradication of polio. That year, it initiated “a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines.
