Maywood firm bridges global divides

Keynect Global is offering a 6-month internship for 18-25-year-olds in Proviso Township that includes a trip to Africa

Maywood Trustee Miguel Jones said he entertained several stereotypes about Africa as a child.

“Growing up, I thought everybody [in Africa] would be in little villages,” Jones said during a fundraiser for Keynect Global, a travel and tourism firm, at O’Sullivan’s Public House in Forest Park on Sept. 14. “I just didn’t know.”

The trustee said those stereotypes dissolved into a much more nuanced reality after he visited the continent during the pandemic. Keynect’s founder, Chassidy Keys, facilitated Jones’ trip as she has for dozens of other people.

Now, Keys, who has an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is fully committed to her company after leaving her job in Corporate America.

“There are a lot of young people on the continent that don’t have jobs,” she said on Sept. 14. “They have bachelor’s and master’s degrees but don’t have work. So, if you’re a small business or nonprofit looking to grow but maybe don’t have the capital to scale or hire people full-time, we can help you source talent. That’s one of our major services.”

Westchester couple’s miniature world draws thousands

Jim and Michelle Bozic build dollhouses that evoke their love for family and the Beatles

Michelle Bozic said she and her dad often admired the dollhouses they’d see on display at stores like Frank’s Nursery and Crafts.

“We said, ‘One day we’ll build one,’ but we never got around to it,” Bozic said. “My dad has since passed.”

One frigid winter day during the infa-

mous Polar Vortex in 2019, Bozic’s online browsing brought to her some people building a dollhouse. That’s when the spark came. She asked her husband Jim if he’d be willing to work on a dollhouse with her. He agreed.

“We just got the bug, you know? We were painting everything, gluing things, buying the little things that go in,” Michelle said.

Your Property Taxes with Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas

Pappas’ office helps Chicago couple get $2,447 property tax refund

Many Cook County homeowners are losing thousands of dollars in savings because they are not taking advantage of property tax breaks.

My office recently helped an older couple on Chicago’s North Side receive $2,447 in refunds. They didn’t know they were eligible to receive a tax break under the Senior Citizen Exemption. That is a surprisingly common occurrence.

Edmundo and Mirta Figueroa called in this summer to a weekly radio show I host. They have been married for many years and own a home in Avondale.

Edmundo is retired after working as an engineer for Chicago Public Schools. He met his future wife in the 1980s when they worked together at a city school.

They received a Homeowner’s Exemption on their property, but until recently were unaware they should also have been receiving a Senior Citizen Exemption. Homeowners are eligible for the Senior Citizen Exemption if they are 65 years or older and occupy their property as their primary residence.

Edmundo didn’t know he and his wife could apply for the benefit as soon as Mirta turned 65.

“She was a senior citizen for three years before I was, so we got those three years back,” Edmundo told me. “She’s 70, I’m 66.”

My office can help homeowners receive

refunds for up to four years of missed exemptions for homeowners, senior citizens, people with disabilities and disabled veterans. However, if the county owes refunds because a property owner overpaid, taxpayers can seek refunds going back 20 years after the date they overpaid.

My office helped Edmundo and Mirta receive refunds for missed Senior Citizen Exemptions for a total of four years, 2018 through 2021. The amounts were $545 for 2021, $602 for 2020, $639 for 2019 and $659 for 2018 for a grand total of $2,447.

I asked Edmundo what he planned to do with the money.

“I’m going to save it and buy something good for me and her,” he said.

Edmundo told me he earned $2.71 an hour when he started working for Chicago Public Schools in the 1980s. He learned about the potential refund while watching TV in December when my office held a phone bank with ABC7 reporter Samantha Chatman.

Homeowners can visit our website at cookcountytreasurer.com and click on the purple box that says, “Your Property Tax Overview” on the home page. Visitors can search using their address or Property Index Number (PIN). Results will display a picture of their home and show whether taxpayers have overpaid taxes or missed exemptions that could qualify them for refunds.

To learn how we’ve helped homeowners like Edmundo and Mirta receive refunds, tune in to “Black Houses Matter” on WVON-AM 1690 every Monday from 11:30 a.m. to noon.

Today, the couple has completed at least five miniature homes, each of which can take up to two years to finish. The YouTube channel devoted to their hobby, Michelle & Jim’s Miniature World, has amassed more than 170,000 views.

Jim said they get the miniature houses either as kits that can be extended by adding rooms or as homes that other people built but that might need renovating. The process is rather extensive.

“None of these houses come electrified,” Jim said. “We have to put everything in. We have to do the floors and the lights.”

Bozic’s sister, Nicole Heller, said she understands why the dollhouses have attracted so much attention on YouTube. Part of the homes’ appeal lay in their creators’ extraordinary attention to detail and how they’ve layered each dollhouse with aspects of their personal and familial histories.

“[Jim and Michelle] are huge fans of the Beatles, so there’s a Beatle [reference] in ev-

ery room,” Heller said. “She has our family photos on the walls. She has my wedding picture and their wedding picture. There are so many quirky things. Every single thing has meaning.”

Bozic said she considers each room in the dollhouses a separate scene or vignette that tells a story — similar to the objects she, her sister Nicole and their friend Lisa O’Brien had on display Sunday during Westchester’s ReUse-A-Palooza event. The annual event encourages residents to sell or give away items they don’t need anymore.

In her Westchester yard, Bozic pointed to busts of classical composers Mozart, Wagner and Beethoven.

“My parents wanted to find stuff my sister and I could do as art projects for the summer,” Bozic said. “They went to this [figurine store] where they sold plaster you could take home and paint. My father was into classical music so he painted those. They were white and he painted them gold. That’s how I got into my love of painting ceramics.”

“This is a nice thing,” Heller said of the annual ReUse-A-Palooza event. “It would be a shame if this stuff ended up in a landfill.”

Bellwood church gets a new name, but its mission remains

The World Deliverance Christian Center, 439 Bohland Ave. in Bellwood, is now The Launching Pad Worldwide, the church’s pastor, Bishop Thomas Arthur Clark, IV, said at a business owner reception at the church on Sept. 24.

Bishop Clark said the church formally announced its new name and logo two weeks ago. He said the new name is consistent with the church’s mission to impact the local community positively but in a way that can get exported worldwide.

Clark said that every four weeks, he encourages his members to worship twice, engage in the community twice, and serve other people twice — a model he calls “2x2x2=4.”

Over the years, the church has regularly hosted community outreach events, including online mental health workshops, food giveaways, free spring and summer camps for young people, toy giveaways during the holidays, and Sunday’s business networking event.

During the networking event, the church’s Missionary Team recognized local businesses and organizations, including Afriware Books in Maywood, Little Achievers Child Care in Bellwood and Proviso Area for Exceptional Children (PAEC) in Maywood. Full disclosure: Village Free Press was also among the local businesses recognized.

“We don’t charge any money for any of the events we host,” said Felicia Clark, Bishop Clark’s wife.

She said during the free spring camp in March, the church took them on field trips to

the DuSable Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago History Museum, among other cultural destinations.

Bishop Clark said he want his church to build social momentum that might leveraged as it builds spiritual momentum. He said the church plans to partner with the Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance Network (PTMAN), the faith-based community advocacy organization, to host a Social Momentum Symposium in November.

“That’s where we’ll talk to community residents who are doing work in the community about what they’re doing in the community,” Clark said. “People need to hear it. We’ll bring people together and re-neighbor our neighborhood. It’s a lot different when you know your neighbor’s first and last names.”

The Clarks, who live in Maywood, said one informal way they and their church members have helped build social momentum in their communities is by inviting their neighbors and other community members to hang out at their homes.

“We provided the hot dogs and hamburgers,” Bishop Clark said. “We just hung out and got to know each other.”

The pastor said a new website featuring the church’s new name and logo will go live soon. He said the renaming reflects the church’s ambition to spread its gospel of neighborliness to people affiliated with the ministry in other suburbs, states and countries.

Ruth Price, a member of the church’s Missionary Team, said the church may have a new name, but its spirit of community and outreach hasn’t changed.

“The name has changed, but we’re still doing the missionary work,” she said.

Biden responds to calls from Pritzker, other leaders for help with migrant crisis

Homeland Security will expedite work authorizations among other actions

The Department of Homeland Security will speed up the processing of work authorizations for asylum seekers and extend Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan migrants, actions that could help thousands of migrants who have arrived in Illinois in recent months.

Those moves were announced by the Biden administration on Sept. 20 in response to pleas from leaders in Illinois, New York and other states for help in dealing with the ongoing migrant crisis. The crisis is taxing the resources of cities like Chicago, where many migrants have been sent, sometimes without any notification.

At an Aug. 30 news conference, Gov. JB Pritzker, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and state business leaders called on the administration to ease work restrictions for asylum seekers and other long-term undocumented workers. At that time, Chicago officials said the city had received more than 13,000 asylum seekers, the vast majority of whom had no official authorization to work in the United States.

Among other things, those officials requested DHS to allow states to sponsor asylum seekers for work authorizations. And while that was not one of the actions DHS announced Wednesday, Pritzker said he was happy with the actions the agency took to make it easier for those individuals to find employment.

“I’m very pleased that President Biden has listened to my concerns and those of other governors and political leaders and expanded Temporary Protected Status to migrants from Venezuela, thousands of whom have been sent to Illinois over the last year,” Pritzker said in a statement Wednesday.

“Despite traveling thousands of treacherous miles and then being used as political chess pieces by those who should have welcomed and helped them, they are eager to contribute to their new communities and get to work,” the governor added.

Pritzker was referring to actions by Republican Govs. Greg Abbott, of Texas, and Ron DeSantis, of Florida, who have been busing migrants from their states to socalled “sanctuary” cities such as Chicago and New York City.

Asylum seekers are people seeking temporary shelter and protection in the U.S. because they have suffered, or fear suffering, persecution in their home country due to factors such as race, religion, nationality, or political opinion.

To be eligible for asylum, people must be physically present in the U.S. and apply for that status, usually by filing an online application form known as an I-589, within one year of their arrival.

Federal law still requires asylum seekers to wait six months after filing their claim before they can apply for a work permit, officially known as an Employment Authorization Document or EAD. But starting Oct. 1, DHS says it will dedicate additional staff to reducing the median processing time for those applications from 90 days to 30 days.

In addition, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will increase the maximum validity period for EADs to five years for certain noncitizens, including those admitted as refugees or granted asylum, those who have been granted withholding of removal, and applicants for asylum.

DHS will also extend Temporary Protected Status for 18 months to Venezuelan migrants who were living in the U.S. on or before July 31. That’s a temporary immigration status for people from certain countries experiencing issues that make it difficult or unsafe to return home.

According to the humanitarian aid group World Vision International, as of August 2023, more than 7.7 million people had fled Venezuela since 2014, due largely to political unrest brought on by years of hyperinflation, political corruption and economic problems. Most of those have fled to Caribbean and other Latin American nations.

Under the socialist government of former president Hugo Chavez, the country was almost entirely reliant on oil revenue to fund government operations. But that revenue dried up when oil prices plummeted in 2014, resulting in a collapse of the Venezuelan economy and dire shortages of food, medicine, and other necessities.

Grand openings, grand closings in Proviso

Three businesses held ribbon cuttings on Sept. 23 while others poise to close or look to sell

There was a slate of ribbon cuttings for new businesses in the Proviso Township area on Sept. 23, while some companies closed their doors for good.

Berkeley village officials cut the ribbon for Mi Monarca, 5817 St. Charles Rd. on Saturday. The business specializes in high-quality charcuterie boards and grazing boxes made with fresh ingredients.

Mi Monarca has a sale on all of its charcuterie boards to mark its grand opening, but all orders must be made and paid for by Oct. 1.

Two more businesses held grand opening celebrations in Broadview on Saturday. Golden Law had a grand opening at its new location at 2121 Roosevelt Rd. The firm’s LinkedIn profile shows that the general practice firm was established in 2009 and is headquartered in Oak Park.

Asia Insurance also had a grand opening on Saturday at its new space at 1425 Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview. The firm states in marketing materials that it also insures

Uber and Lyft drivers.

Broadview Building Commissioner David Upshaw said in a village press release the suburb has experienced a lot of new business and development activity in the last few years.

He mentioned the construction of a new Chick-fil-A, the national chicken restaurant chain at Broadview Village Square Mall, among other businesses under development. The chicken restaurant will replace the old China Buffett. Another Broadview company, Upshaw added that Vanee Foods, which makes soups, sauces, gravies and meats located at 5418 McDermott Dr., has submitted plans to expand its facility.

At a special village board meeting on Sept. 18, the Broadview board unanimously approved business licenses for Laundry World to operate a new laundromat at 1500 W. Roosevelt Rd., Wheatfield Fresh, a company that transports baked goods, to work at 2700 S. 21st Ave., Nelson’s Environmental Solutions, whose parent company deals in pest control, to work at 2000 S. 25th Ave., and Patrick’s Dog Resort to operate at 1750 Parkes Dr. Meanwhile, as local businesses open, some are closing or going up for sale. Last week, an employee at Boost Mobile at 701 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood confirmed that the business is permanently closing, and an employee at Palmer Florist, 1926 S. Mannheim Rd. in Westchester, confirmed that the owner had placed the business up for sale.

KEYNECT On a mission

from page 1

Keynect’s other primary service is curating tourism experiences for individuals, nonprofits, businesses and professional groups — experiences that often shatter people’s preconceptions about the continent.

“Here in America, we think that Africa is not a safe place for us to go to and that all of our people have diseases over there, which is not true,” said Teresa McKelvy, a former Proviso Township High School District 209 board member who also traveled to the continent by utilizing Keynect’s services.

“Our vision is to be a catalyst for global tourism that inspires economic growth and social impact,” Keys said. She said her firm works in countries like Ghana, Angola and Senegal on co-

ordinating trade missions for people to learn about investment opportunities in those countries. Keys said another aspect of her firm focuses on tourism growth strategies.

“That is basically me going into cities and countries nad helping their ministries create plans to drive business,” she said.

Keynect also offers work opportunities for Proviso Township youth ages 18 to 25. Keys is taking applications from those interested in the Coby Travel Award, named after her best friend and traveling buddy, who died from Covid in 2020. The young person will work as Keys’ intern for six months, functioning as her assistant manager for global experiences.

The internship is unpaid, but part of the six-month experience is an all-expenses paid trip to the continent. The application deadline is Saturday, Sept. 30.

Local government officials leave office

Two local government officials in the Proviso Township area have vacated their positions.

In a Sept. 15 Facebook post, Broadview Park District Director Brian Dawson announced that his contract had ended and that he’ll be “moving on to a new position where I can spend more time with my family.”

Dawson succeeded former executive director Reginald Davis, who held the position from 2015 to 2021. Dawson is also a Lindop District 92 school board member.

“I have enjoyed interacting with the people and creating quality programs and events for the community I grew up in,” Dawson wrote. “Thank you to everyone who was generous with your time, advice, acts of kindness and all the things that helped me do this job.”

Mathis Stegall, the former Broadview

Park District board president, was appointed the new executive director.

During a Sept. 19 village board meeting, Berkeley Trustee Shafi Mohammed was honored by Village President Robert Lee with a proclamation that recognized Mo-

clerk for 16 years and a village trustee for eight years. Red was a World War II veteran who coached wrestling, baseball, football and judo.

The Berkeley board unanimously voted to approve the honorary street designation at a board meeting on Aug. 15.

Police say they’re aware of viral Sergio Brown Instagram posts

A viral video seemingly posted to Instagram by missing former Proviso East graduate Sergio Brown is making the rounds on social media. Maywood Police said on Sept. 19 that they’re aware of the post.

In the video, Brown, 35, appears to be in Mexico and is speaking disjointedly about the circumstances of his mother’s death, mentioning the FBI.

“Maywood Police Department detectives are aware of a video that has surfaced on social media in relation to Mr. Sergio Brown, who is still considered a missing person and are also looking [at its] authenticity,” Maywood Police said in a press release.

Police said on Sept. 8 they were still investigating the crime. They asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Maywood Police Investigations Sgt. Pezdek at (708) 368-4131 or the Maywood Police Department Anonymous Tip Line at (708) 450-1787.

Services set for Myrtle Simmons-Brown

The funeral arrangements for Myrtle Simmons-Brown, the well-known Maywood resident and mother of Proviso East football standout and former NFL player Sergio Brown, have been set.

Simmons-Brown’s son, Nick Brown, Sergio’s older brother, posted the arrangements to his Facebook page on Sept. 23.

The wake will occur on Friday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Family Altar Baptist Church, 5907 W. Chicago Ave. in Chicago.

The funeral will occur on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Rock of Ages Baptist Church, 1309 Madison St. in Maywood. The visitation will occur from 11 a.m. to noon while the funeral service will occur from noon to 1 p.m.

hammed’s public service.

Mohammed recently announced his resignation from the board. Lee appointed Mohammed to the board in 2021 when former Berkeley trustee Herb Washington resigned because he was leaving the village.

An 11-year resident of Berkeley, Mohammed was well-known for doing accounting and taxes for residents and businesses in the village.

Berkeley ‘power couple’ gets honorary street designation

The 2100 block of Calvin Avenue in Berkeley will now be known as Red and Violet Murphy Way. Berkeley Village President Robert Lee called them a “power couple” for their outsized local accomplishments.

The couple’s daughter, Kristen Murphy, submitted the application nominating her parents for the honorary street sign designation.

Kristen said her parents were residents of Berkeley for 67 years. Red passed away while Violet, 93, is still living.

Kristen said Violet was Berkeley’s village

“Currently this is an active investigation, and the department is unable to share any further details at this time. We appreciate your patience while our agency continues to investigate the matter.”

Another Instagram post that stamps his location as Sydney, Australia shows Brown speaking incoherently.

Brown has been missing since at least Friday. On Saturday, the body of his 73-yearold mother, Myrtle Simmons-Brown, was discovered behind her home in Addison Creek. Authorities have ruled her death a homicide. So far, no one has been named a suspect in her death.

Maywood Police arrest Chicago man for July homicide

Maywood Police announced earlier this month that they had arrested a Chicago man in connection to a homicide that happened in Maywood in July.

Police said Charles Williams, 27, was taken into custody on Sept. 8 and charged with First Degree Murder for his alleged role in the shooting death of Tristan Meeks. Meeks was fatally shot on July 16 near 4th and Main Street in the village.

The burial will occur immediately after the Saturday service at Oakridge Cemetery, 4111 Roosevelt Rd. in Hillside. The repast will occur after the burial, from 2 to 6 p.m., at Proviso West High School, 4701 Harrison St. in Hillside.

Simmons-Brown, 73, was found dead on Sept. 16 in an area along Addison Creek directly behind her Maywood home. Authori-

ties have ruled her death a homicide. So far, no one has been named a suspect in her death. Her son, former Patriots safety Sergio Brown, has been missing since at least Sept. 15 and still has not been found. Police are still investigating. Community members with information can report it to the Maywood Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (708) 4501787.

Nick Brown directed community members seeking to provide support and assistance to his website, ynickbrowny.com/, and email at nickbrownlove@gmail.com.
