MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL John Evans

2

It is safe to say we have all learned more than we expected during this past year. Here is my most valuable lesson: Never underestimate the power of a village. Village is where we connect and take notice of the wonder around us. Village is where we activate our spirit, engaging and learning together. Village is where we give our time, enthusiasm and resources and reap the benefits. Being part of a village is central to the human experience, and with so many personal, professional and societal changes over the last year, we have never appreciated the importance of our village more. For so many of us, recognizing the incomparable value in being together, in person, is the standout lesson of the past year. Our students are delightful, and they are engaging, and their unbridled joy and enthusiasm beams infinitely brighter in person than across even the highest-definition screen. Looking ahead, I am confident our collaboration, creativity and commitment to each other will continue to thrive as we come together on campus and in our homes, sharing life experiences, guidance, and laughter. After this most unexpected first year as your new Head, with the unflinching support of the board, faculty, staff and parent body, I can honestly say the Village community is here to support us, one and all.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Suzanne Ginestro

While the 2020-2021 school year was challenging on many levels, it was a year of tremendous growth and transition for Village School. Like other schools, we navigated uncharted waters and were faced with quick pivots as county protocols evolved in real time. In addition to showing great resilience and adaptability to the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic, our community also welcomed and rallied around a new leadership team. Stepping in to lead a school after a long-standing head is no easy task, even during a “normal” transition. John’s transition was anything but normal—onboarding virtually, building relationships through a computer screen, and making tough decisions based on ever-changing regulations that made it impossible to please all constituents. It was a challenging environment, but John carried us through with transparency, collaboration, steadfast leadership, and grace. Despite the many challenges we faced this year, our community remains strong. Our new leadership team has successfully protected the operational and cultural well-being of this school and has set us up for a strong start to the 2021-22 school year. Our faculty

and staff have stepped up, leaned in, and built new capabilities to better support our students. Our parents have shown great adaptability, warmth, and a desire to find new ways to build connections across our community. And most importantly, our students have continuously reminded us how to persevere with a smile. While I expect our return to school will look more normal this year, I am confident that we will continue to grow and flourish together through continuous improvement opportunities. Our core values remain intact, and we will begin to roll out a new strategic plan that will guide us through this next tranche of growth. We look forward to sharing the strategic plan with you in the coming months. Thank you to John Evans and Caroline Byfield for your extraordinary leadership. Your partnership, dedication to our faculty and our students, continuous problem-solving, and openness to feedback served us well during an extremely difficult time. We have great confidence in your ability to lead us into this next chapter. We hope you all found muchneeded joy and light over the summer and are excited to welcome everyone back to school.

MESSAGE FROM THE VSPA CO-PRESIDENTS

What. A. Year. We honestly did not know what to expect when we kicked off the 20202021 school year, but we did know that supporting our children and their phenomenal teachers would require our community to come together in order to meet the moment. And come together we did. While zoom became a verb and “cohort” an integral part of our lexicon, we tried to pivot to make the best of an extraordinarily challenging situation. VSPA volunteers logged hundreds of miles delivering goodie bags for Let’s Connect events, drinks and desserts for the annual fundraiser, and welcome swag to our newest families. We decorated cars for Halloween and had s’mores indoors. And we watched as family after family raised their digital paddle to support the creation of a beautiful new play structure, enabling our kids to get back to the business of being kids. We connected at our quarterly book clubs, and filled up our brand new Little Library all year long. Parents shopped online at our Holiday Boutique, and when we asked students to help us honor their teachers, they more than answered the call—flowers poured into the teachers’ lounge by the dozen in recognition of the herculean efforts of our beloved Village School Faculty.

It was not an easy year. But we found strength in our children’s resilience, and used them as our guide for what was possible. It was not the year that any of us wanted, but it was a year that we got through together, and we believe that we are stronger for it. We were reminded over and over again that the heart of Village School does not exist in any one place, but rather beats strongly because of the kindness and generosity of the people who make up its community, wherever they may be. It has been a privilege for us to serve Village School these past two years; thank you for coming along on the ride with us. It takes teamwork at every level to have a strong VSPA, and we certainly could not make any of it happen (in person or remotely) without the tremendous support of Village School’s devoted teachers, faculty, and administrators. We would like to specifically recognize Sara Singsank— without whom the VSPA simply would not function—as well as Chris Gonyaw, for indulging our requests and favors and being a constant support for the VSPA’s efforts. Thank you all for making Village School the special place that it is for our children and our families. Kristyn Romans and Lisa Weinberger VSPA Co-Presidents VILLAGE SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT Danny Kramer In just a few short months, I have come to learn that Village is a generous and supportive school filled with resilient people of the highest character. Our students grow and thrive in warm and inspiring classrooms with teachers who care deeply about reaching every learner. Seeing many of our Village kids at camp this summer and watching them explore, investigate, laugh and connect reminds me why we do what we do. Successful fundraising begins with heart and an audacious ambition. Last year, Village set out to raise $800K in 100 days and we did it resoundingly! Raising our paddles at the spring fundraiser enabled us to purchase a brand-new state of the art play structure that is already bringing great joy and imagination to our kids, and helped us improve many nooks and crannies of our campus. The impact of your gifts can be felt throughout our school at every turn. The pages of this annual report are populated with smiling faces and names of our generous and kind supporters. The connection between your support and our students’ success is easy to see. I urge you to take a moment to read through this report. Know that your contributions make so much possible and there is still so much more we can and will accomplish together. Thank you to all of our parents, grandparents, trustees, faculty and staff, alumni, parents of alumni, friends, and volunteers. You have all made a difference in the lives of our children. Until we meet each other in person, please know that I am eager to partner with you.

24

THE ANNUAL FUND Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Annual Fund. Your contribution strengthens the value of a Village School education in many ways. Each year, these funds help bridge the gap between tuition revenues and the actual cost of providing this excellent independent school education. Village depends upon this tradition of giving to enhance all of its programs and facilities, thus enriching the academic, creative and ethical development of each student. The funds also serve to supplement teacher resources, expand the use of technology and provide competitive compensation packages for our faculty. Every gift, no matter the amount, helps to ensure that our students receive the best possible Village School education.

thank you! e-mail-a-thon volunteers Each year, a group of dedicated volunteers send emails during our Email-A-Thon to ask fellow parents to support the Annual Fund campaign. We are deeply grateful to the 20202021 Email-A-Thon Committee for their ongoing commitment to Village School, and we give a special thanks to the Board of Trustees Development Chair, Emily Park, and to the extraordinary Advancement Team for all their hard work throughout the year! WAYS TO GIVE Cash and Pledges

MAKING A GIFT Every contribution to Village School is vitally important to its continued growth and strength. Like those who helped build the foundation of the school in the past, each donor will be an integral part of the school’s history and future. An investment in Village School will benefit generations of children—a legacy of which we can all be proud.

32

For income tax purposes, your gift is taxdeductible to the full extent allowed by law. Gifts may be made by cash, check or credit card. Village School also accepts pledges that can be paid at a later date.

Securities

You may achieve significant tax savings by making your gift via stocks or other capital assets. If you have stocks that have appreciated, your charitable deduction may be based on the full market value on the date of the transfer. If you have stocks that have decreased in value, you may be able to take a deductible loss when you sell the stocks and donate the proceeds.

Matching Gifts

Many corporations encourage philanthropy by matching employee donations. Matching gifts can double or triple the amount of your gift. To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, please contact the Advancement Office.

Planned Giving

Donors may wish to consider giving through such means as life insurance, bequests or charitable trusts. Planned giving may be a way to reduce estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering any type of planned gift.
