F

ebruary brought some chilly days, and even though we spent our share of time in the warmth of an office, the staff at Views & Voices also ventured out in search of the season’s most beautiful prom gowns. The endeavor was a success, and the photos inside are proof that our area has lots to offer for those who are seeking some glamour.

We are so grateful for partnerships with the local apparel shops, salons, shoe stores and florists who pull out all the stops to ensure our photo shoots succeed. We hope you appreciate their efforts as much as we do.

In coordinating the shoot, we also had the pleasure of working with a group of area teenagers who volunteered as models. These young men and women were so hard-working and accommodating on a grueling, Sunday afternoon, it was hard to believe they were amateur models.

Many of their parents were also on hand to lend support to cast and crew.

This month, we also looked beyond prom fashions, hoping to discover a broader spectrum of stories about teenagers in our communities. In doing so, we were reminded that young people, our most precious resource, are also our most vulnerable. Let’s remember to keep them close as we pay tribute to their advocates.

T

aylor Galaska was an eighth grader at Kennedy Catholic Middle School in 2012, when 20 first graders and six teachers were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

He is a cadet for The Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima and a recipient of his school’s St. Francis of Assisi Award.

Taylor was recognized by Pennsylvania Sen. Robert Casey Jr. and was invited to his office in Washington, D.C., where he received a letter commending his work in the community and the nation. As a Kennedy Catholic Middle School student, he received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and the Citizenship Award.

Taylor is a volunteer in the outpatient surgery unit at Sharon Regional Health System and for the summer reading program at the Stey-Nevant Public Library in Farrell.

At Kennedy Catholic High School, Taylor is a member of the Spanish club, art club, Environment Science Club and Action Club and is a student council representative. He also participates in the Youngstown State University English Festival. V

How to prepare for

COLLEGE W

ith more than 5,000 colleges in the United States, the choices can be overwhelming. As many differences as there are in institutions and costs, so too are there differences in the way colleges and universities make admission decisions. As a public university in Ohio, YSU has an open access admission policy. This means that while we do not automatically accept any student who applies, those who demonstrate potential for success may be admitted.

The key to making the right decision for you is early planning! Make sure you take the pre-college examinations (PLAN in your sophomore year and PSAT in your junior year). Take the ACT or SAT at least once before the end of your junior year, giving you time to retake them if necessary.

Begin making a list of schools that you would consider. Try to narrow that list to three to five by the end of your junior year. Then, VISIT those top schools. There is no substitute for the campus visit.

Plan on completing applications to all four-year institutions you are considering by Thanksgiving of your senior year. Generally, that means completing the application, submitting a transcript and providing ACT/SAT test results.

At Youngstown State, those are the three things we require to complete your application. Most colleges adhere to the May 1 National Candidate’s Reply Date, meaning you have until that date to make a college decision without any financial consequences.

Early planning, understanding the process, visiting campuses of interest and adhering to all college deadlines will make for the most successful outcome possible. Good luck!

he road to college is much like a journey. It can appear overwhelming, exciting, and at times too far away to be tangible. However, much like planning a road trip, there is preparation involved — and it is always best to start planning early. You must first figure out where you want to go, how you want to get there and what you want to do once you arrive.

For instance, if you start your freshman year determined to graduate with a certain GPA, that decision will steer your choices toward harder curriculum and prioritizing your involvement in activities.

Once you establish short-term and long-term goals, you need to make wise decisions about those goals. If you do not do well in a class, do not make a rash decision to withdraw from any rigorous curriculum in that subject. Continue to take challenging classes, but consider seeking help or tutors to help you succeed.

In addition to identifying your goals for academics, factor in personal interests and activities to help determine the type of college you want to attend.

Finally, ask yourself the question that most students do not: Am I ready for college? If the answer is no, ask yourself what you need to do to be ready. What decisions will get you there?

When looking at applicants, most private colleges will look holistically at the student, taking into consideration their commitment, dedication and character. These attributes along with their academic performance and specific major pursuit indicate whether a student should succeed at our campuses. Having a holistic review process also helps the student if they take advantage of the interview process. Allowing our admission counselors to become your advocate as they get to know you, is essential.

Ultimately, the sooner you start planning, the better prepared you are for the journey you are Sarah Gibbs about to take. Not only will you be prepared for the college planning process, you will be equipped for attending college, then achieving your goals and dreams afterward.

hen 16-year-old Tyler describes his experience in foster care, the account is a little like his life: a mixed bag of hope and deficit.

“You know they’re the foster parents,” he said. “You get that taste of half a family, but you get the taste of not being their kid.”

Tyler ought to know. He estimates living in 20 foster homes since age 6, when his grandmother could no longer house him.

“My mom used to beat me, so I didn’t live with her,” he explains, somewhat matter-of-factly, during a visit at his “placement” in Mercer County. “My grandma got sick.”

Placements, or residential facilities, often house adjudicated youths or those awaiting foster placement. For veterans like Tyler, the placements are a familiar haunt. But still, Tyler would prefer a foster home or — ideally — a permanent family.

Statistics are not on his side, said Carrie Keiser, director of Pennsylvania’s Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network, or SWAN. Most families aren’t interested in adopting older youths.

“Typically they tend to wait the longest in the system,” she said, explaining foster families often step up and adopt the younger children, leaving the older ones to linger indefinitely.

“People are usually afraid of the teenagers,” said Jill Schmidt, director of adoption services at the Bair Foundation in New Wilmington. “But they need a home like everybody else.”

As part of her job at the Christian nonprofit, which offers a range of services to children and families, Schmidt collaborates with other professionals to help place the older youths.

Among those is Nic Landon.

Landon is based at Family Pathways in Butler, where he works as a recruiter through a research grant called the Older Child Matching Initiative, drafted through the SWAN and DIAKON Lutheran Services. One of seven such recruiters, Landon is working on behalf of about 20 youths in the western part of the state. His most difficult challenges include combating the stigmas attached to teenage children in foster care, whom Landon says are held to an unfair standard.

One such example was a young man who recently became frustrated and yelled in class.

“I’m working with a juvenile probation officer because he perceived that as

a threat,” Landon said. “If he (were not) in the system, there wouldn’t be such a fear. This sort of thing happens a good bit.”

When teenagers do get into trouble, the stigmas can be reinforced. In the last four years, Tyler twice found himself in a juvenile detention facility, and he speaks frankly about the decisions that landed him there. Some of those, he said, included going along with activities initiated by

other kids.

His advice to teens in the foster care system: “Try not to do anything stupid. I think if I didn’t do anything wrong, I might have a family by now. At least I have a bed to sleep in — and I get food.”

“Barry,” another 16-year-old in Mercer County, also expresses gratitude for basic necessities.

Schmidt said the Bair Foundation also coordinates training and support services for adoptive children and families.

“We really just need to knock down barriers,” Keiser said. “Not to make it easy for people to adopt, but to make it as easy as possible with the proper procedures in place.”

Although part of those procedures include screening, youths like Tyler and Barry have criteria of their own.

According to Tyler, his ideal parents would be “People who love their kid no matter what. People who care. People who send their kids to school no matter what.” Barry imagines a home with movie nights and card games.

Both boys are legally available for adoption and know they might attend many organized matching events and home visits without being chosen. For Barry, it’s a fact of life.

“If it’s not your match, it’s not your match,” he shrugged.

Still, he hopes families will approach older youths with an open mind.

“Not all kids are bad,” he said. “Some go into foster care for a reason — a very sad story: Their parents might have died. ... It’s just like buying a dog and making it stray and tossing it outside. HOW DO I ADOPT A CHILD? Parents seeking to adopt an infant usually use a private agency, while parents who want to adopt a child with special needs or an older child will use a county agency or SWAN affiliate agency.

The process begins with filling out an application and undergoing initial screening, which includes providing doctor’s statement certifying the parent or parents as healthy, providing financial records, and undergoing a criminal background check and child abuse clearance. Personal references are also required.

After the initial screening, parents complete an adoptive family profile, or home study, which involves a series of meetings with an agency worker. The meetings help determine an applicant’s suitability to be a parent and to answer questions about the process.

Once the profile is complete, parents receive information about children who are available, then have multiple opportunities to spend time with those who might be a match.

When a family chooses a child, the child has the right to veto the adoption. If all parties agree, they undergo a supervision period of six months before the adoption is finalized.

Quinlan’s Irish Pub Story and photography by Sarah Worthington

“M

ay you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live.”

This is an Irish proverb that Quinlan’s Irish Pub in Niles, Ohio, strongly supports. The food, the drinks and the décor make this pub house feel as authentic as a pub straight out of Dublin.

Owner, manager and occasional cook Joan Quinlan chose the menu and interior design after taking a trip to Ireland with her late husband, Mike, in 2005. Separating the bar from the dining area is a cobblestone wall inspired by cottages found in the rural areas of Ireland.

The tile floor features a Celtic cross made from glass and stone found off the shores of Lake Erie.

motherland, while beautiful photos of their trip cover the walls. In 2008, the Quinlans opened their doors, hoping their patrons would fill up on food and spirits and feel right at home at this public house.

Joan said she would like all patrons to leave with “a full stomach of good food and a sense that this is a true pub: That they feel welcomed and part of our extended family.”

On a recent trip to Quinlan’s, my colleague, Wendy Hughes, and I started with the Rings O’Kerry: onion rings, served with chipotle mayonnaise. The chipotle mayonnaise gave a nice zing to an otherwise familiar appetizer. I chose a house salad, while Wendy opted for the broccoli cheese soup — a nice comfort on a cold day.

Since we were dining at an Irish establishment, I thought it best to order a traditional Irish meal, so I selected the Guinness Stew. Filled with beef, carrots, onions and potatoes, this dish was finished off with a puff pastry shell on top. The beef was perfectly cooked and melted in my mouth. Though I am not a Guinness connoisseur, I thought the flavor it added to this dish was quite delicious, though not overwhelming. The puff pastry was crisp and offered a nice opposing texture to this hearty fare.

Wendy ordered the Fire Roasted Vegetable Wrap, which consisted of carrots, portobello mushrooms, red onions, provolone cheese and chipotle mayonnaise served in a tomato wrap. A side of fresh cut fries and homemade chips accompanied the dish. Any vegetarian would appreciate this option.

The menu offers plenty of choices for those in search of comfort foods: potato pancakes, chicken pot pie, meatloaf, stuffed peppers and barbecue ribs. The apple tart or ice

cream sundae is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. The evening can be topped off with one of the restaurant’s signature beverages to complete the Irish experience.

Joan Quinlan is passionate about what Joan Quinlan she does, and some may consider her a “Joan of all trades.” She prepares several dishes herself including the meatloaf, chicken salad, stuffed peppers and ribs and has taken up a second job as a truck driver for On Time Delivery in order to ensure Quinlan’s Irish Pub stays open for business. Her band, Rose & Thistle, provides the entertainment every other Wednesday night, and she is putting two kids through college.

Sky Zone Trampoline Park

or the last 10 years, trampoline parks have emerged as a fitness and recreation trend. In May, that trend arrived in Western Pennsylvania with the opening of Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Leetsdale.

“This place is awesome!” were the only words that 12-year-old Maelyn Marko from Harrisville could say on a recent visit to the 12,000-foot park, which features wall-to-wall trampoline courts under high ceilings.

The main court is 5,000 square feet of 9- foot by 9-foot trampoline squares, and this surface is enclosed with angled trampolines that allow visitors to literally bounce off the walls. Along with the main court, the facility has two dodge ball courts and a Sky Slam basketball court with two basketball rims. There is also a three-lane foam pit.

Although parent waivers are required for jumpers under 18, manager Justin Werth said a range of age groups use the park. For safety, they are separated by size.

“So often parents drop the kids off and then ask if they can jump too,” he said.

Activities that draw adults include a SkyRobics fitness class.

“Studies show you can burn about 1,000 calories an hour doing this. It is recreational, but there is a fitness aspect,” Werth said.

“It’s more of a cardio workout. We partner with the American Heart Association, and we take that pretty seriously.”

Sky Zone pricing is broken up into 30minute increments. Since jumpers are not permitted to wear street shoes when on the trampolines, Sky Zone provides a

complimentary pair of jump socks with specially designed gripped bottom.

or some young women this year, a prom gown will truly symbolize beauty from the inside out. On the outside the frocks will come in all shapes, colors and sizes. But each will contain the same ribbon pinned to the tag inside.

The ribbons identify the source as Kyrsten’s Kloset, an offshoot of the Kyrsten Elizabeth Studer Memorial Foundation, which honors the memory of a teenage girl from Hubbard, Ohio.

Kyrsten was hit by a drunk driver when she and a group of friends were out celebrating: She had just made it for ju-

COMMUNITY ASSISTANT Deedee Evans Slippery Rock University The life of a college student is unique in its own way, however a whole new level is added when you become a community assistant. At Slippery Rock University, this entails being an in-hall leader, guiding firstyear students to the right resources in addition to making sure that a new version of “Animal House” doesn’t break out in the residence halls. Sometimes it’s a challenging balancing act between classes, extracurricular activities, meetings and interacting with 44 residents, but I can honestly say I wouldn’t change it for a minute. It has been one of the most rewarding adventures I have ever experienced. Every day is a little different, but here is an average busy day in the life of a CA.

2:35 to 4:30 p.m. Choir rehearsal: a nice stress reliever for the day!

4:35 p.m. Head to the computer lab to do some damage control on my e-mail inbox: I got 16 new messages in less than 6 hours! I send two to the music therapy club, one reply to a professor, three replies to my supervisor.

5 to 7 p.m. Choir rehearsal, round 2!

9 a.m. Wake up and look out the window, experiencing a mix of excitement and dread as I see that in less than an hour I will be braving the hilly campus through 6 inches of snow to my first class.

7 p.m. Settle into my room, leaving the door open for passing residents. I pull out some homework and pop in my dinner for the evening: the ever delicious Easy Mac.

9:30 a.m. Prepare my books for the day and begin bundling up for the cold walk to and between classes.

7:30 p.m. Do my first round of the evening. Starting on the first floor, I pass through the building, going down four floors and back up the other four to ensure that nothing is on fire and that residents are safe and not blasting music so loud that the people across the street can hear.

9:45 a.m. Set the sign on my door to “In Class” so that my residents know that I’ll be out for a little while in the event that they need me or have an emergency.

10:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sit through three hours of class including conducting, music history and anatomy and physiology. In between, a brief break allows time for me to respond to a resident about a question that they texted me while I was in class.

1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Meet some friends for a quick lunch before I’m off to the second half of my day!

1:50 p.m. Rush back to the dorms to meet with a resident about a roommate conflict: I hope I can help the residents grow in addressing and dealing with conflicts in addition to checking in to make sure they are doing OK. 26

2:32 p.m. Run to choir rehearsal that started two minutes ago because the meeting ran over the intended time limit: It’s important to really be present with residents and listen to what they are going through.

8 p.m. Return to my room after the first walkthrough of the evening, which included stopping at least 10 times to have friendly conversations and check in with residents and other CAs throughout the building.

8:05 p.m. Finally sit down to start working on homework.

8:07 p.m. A resident stops by to ask what time Quaker Steak closes and ends up talking about how classes are going and about a range of other things from roommate disagreements to what happened over the weekend. I provide some resources on getting additional assistance with a difficult class.

8:40 p.m. Finish up the conversation and set off for my second round of the building. On my way around, I knock on a room that was playing music so loud that I was dancing through the halls to it on the floor below.

9 p.m. Meet with my supervisor and seven other staff members about things occurring in the building and paperwork requirements for the week.

9:05 p.m. Rejoice as we realized our supervisor has ordered pizza and baked us cookies!

10 p.m. Leave the meeting happy to have spent a fun hour with my colleagues, although I am exhausted and overwhelmed by the long day and the new list of tasks that need to be done.

10:05 p.m. Cover the shift at the desk while the desk attendant runs out to her car to grab some books for homework.

10:10 p.m. Return to my room and get started on the list of things that I was given at the meeting: make nametags and a bulletin board by next week and create new flyers for a social next week. I finally start on a to-do list of things including homework and social planning.

11:30 p.m. Do one final round with the other CA on duty to close out the night.

11:40 p.m. Get back to my room and curl up in my bed to rest up for an equally busy day tomorrow.

Living life with

PCOS

S

ometimes, life likes to tap us on the shoulder like an annoying little brother. We all know that sensation: a yappy new coworker, unexpected car trouble, your daughter’s new “edgy” boyfriend. Other times, life gives us an unexpected, caught-off-your-guard punch to the gut. A bad breakup. Job loss. A glum health diagnosis.

My unexpected punch to the gut came three years ago in my junior year of high school. School was going well (except for pre-calculus: a lost cause), and a new driving learner’s permit sat in my wallet.

Admittedly though, I was frustrated that I was experiencing unprecedented, severe acne problems. We scheduled a dermatologist appointment to obtain a magical acne-eliminating cream, but were unsuccessful.

I decided to just accept that poor skin was a rite of passage for any teenager.

My mom would not accept this and scheduled an appointment with a gynecologist to see if something was “amiss.”

On the way to the appointment, I sat silent in the car, bitter, disinterested and difficult. The nurse with cold hands took some blood samples to check the levels of several hormones whose names and functions I didn’t know.

Two weeks later, I was so busy with school, sports and admiring my permit that I’d forgotten all about the appointment. But the nurse with the cold hands had not forgotten and called my house with the test results. The tests revealed that my hormones levels were, indeed, amiss and that I had something called polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS.

What is PCOS? Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the leading cause of female infertility. It can affect a woman's menstrual cycle, fertility, hormones, heart, blood vessels and appearance. PCOS can be treated with lifestyle modifications, exercise, diet, not smoking and birth control pills.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common hormonal disorder that occurs in one out of 10 women of reproductive age.

PCOS is characterized by small cysts covering the edge of each ovary. This leads to a hormonal imbalance and resulting symptoms like infrequent menstrual cycles, acne, abnormal hair growth and weight gain.

I had never even heard of this so called PCOS. My mom gave me everything she knew about it and said I would have to take “the pill.” I blushed. Taking birth control pills is one way women control their PCOS and regulate their hormones to keep everything in balance. I was not happy to be dealing with gynecologist checkups, rules, and rows of tiny pills that love to escape to the unreachable space under the microwave.

A year after my diagnosis, I discovered that PCOS would change the way I could eat because it causes Type 2 diabetes-like symptoms, which impacts the way bodies use insulin. If I was not cautious with my eating habits, I would feel sick, sleepy and sluggish. My sweet tooth mourned the changes; my body cheered, and I wanted my cheesecake back.

At first, being diagnosed with PCOS was difficult for me to handle. I tried several medicines before finding one that did not cause me to feel sick. I felt upset by the diagnosis because it required me to think about pills and lifestyle changes — and even infertility — when I just wanted to be a teenager.

Still, I am thankful for my early diagnoses, as most women experience many

health complications before they discover they have PCOS. Today, I write this article about my experiences with PCOS with the hope that someone might benefit from learning about the signs and symptoms.

My journey with PCOS is not over, and there are certainly more bumps ahead. However, I’ve decided that I must embrace change and take the wheel on this road trip called life. Life is not meant to be lived in perpetual park; it is meant to be put in drive. Doctors are there to help along the way; friends and counselors are there to support, and information is there to educate and inform.

Putting my life in drive meant opening up about PCOS, taking an active role in my health, and accepting my body for what it was and all the good things it could do. Putting my life in drive after encountering the roadblock of PCOS meant remembering there is hope at the end of the tunnel. V

eens may have the prom, but residents at St. Paul’s continuing care community in Greenville have the Snowflake Ball. Glitz and glamour, laughter and friendship bring generations together for a night to remember.

Organized each January by the Life Enrichment staff, the event joins students from Thiel College with residents at The Villas of St. Paul’s for an evening of fine food, live music, dancing and socializing in an elegant setting. Attendees dress in their finest, and each resident receives a flower boutonniere or corsage. The 2014 event took place Jan. 30.

Thiel’s junior class football players have been involved since the event began in 2007. Since then, other campus organizations, notably the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, have become involved as well. This year, members of Sigma Kappa Sorority participated. For the students, spending this time with their elders in a social setting can provide an unexpected revelation.

“I can’t believe the energy they have,” said Thiel junior football player Mike Finchio from Waterford. “I’m a little worn out. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I came here tonight, but I had a lot of fun and would definitely do this again.”

Designed initially for the residents as a distraction from the chill of winter, the ball has become a favorite event for staff that plan, organize, decorate and oversee it.

“We created the Snowflake Ball as a way to create a little pizzazz for the residents during the long winter season,” explained Life Enrichment Director Mimi Dreher. “Now, it’s an annual tradition.

The old adage ‘you're only as young as you feel’ rings true when watching the residents’ faces light up during the course of the event.”

Student Emily Harrigan of West Hartford, Conn., said the Snowflake Ball was something she will always remember.

“Everyone looks so happy,” she said.

“It’s great to be a part of something like this.”

The venue also provides a perfect setting for couples to celebrate a special anniversary. Residents Richard and Shirley Huhn have been married for 62 years.

His eyes twinkled as he looked at Shirley. “I let her have anything she wants,” he said. “There’s nothing within my power that I would not give her.”

Resident Leonard Grasso and his wife, Betty, are celebrating their 67th anniversary this year. The pianist at the ball played and sang their wedding song, “To Each His Own,” in honor of the occasion. Leonard’s advice for keeping a marriage strong is very simple. “Just love each other — no matter what.” V

BEYOND THE ROMANCE make sure your relationship is a healthy one

T

he early months of a relationship can feel easy and exciting. It's totally normal to look at the world through rose-colored glasses in the early stages of a relationship. But for some people, those rose-colored glasses turn into blinders that keep them from seeing that a relationship isn't as healthy as it should be.

Knowing what is important before getting into a committed relationship and understanding what a healthy relationship should look like can help you recognize when your relationship is getting off track.

Healthy relationships are based on equality and respect. You may be in an unhealthy or abusive relationship and not recognize the signs. So often, these signs are mistaken for love and young women don’t want to believe their relationship could be an unhealthy one.

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that girls between 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of dating violence. In fact, teens face abuse three times more than adult women.

The definition of dating violence is a pattern of actual or threatened acts of verbal, digital (this includes texting and Internet messages), emotional, physical or sexual abuse against a current or former dating partner.

Dating violence is not just the acts of physical or sexual abuse; it also includes insults, intimidation, bullying and controlling behaviors. At first those behaviors may be very subtle: He just doesn’t like what you’re wearing or thinks you talk with your friends too much. But as time goes on, you feel yourself being alienated from your friends and afraid to talk to your family. You are starting to feel like you can’t make any decisions

without checking with him first, and he’s keeping track of everything you do.

This was the case of Demi Brae Cuccia, a 16-year-old Gateway High School cheerleader who was killed in 2007 by an ex-boyfriend.

Her father, Dr. Gary Cuccia, now speaks in schools and other venues to raise awareness on behalf of the Demi Brae Cuccia Awareness Organization, based in New Alexandria.

“If I, along with her friends and others around her, knew how to recognize the signs of an unhealthy relationship, she might still be alive today,” he said. He also stresses the impact of technology, since excessive cell phone calls and texting are a means of constant control. According to Cuccia’s web site, 82 percent of parents were unaware when teens said they received emails or text messages as often as 30 times an hour.

“Know what’s going on in your child’s life. Today we live in a different world from the one we grew up in,” he said. “It used to be there was only one phone in the house. You knew when someone was receiving a call. In today’s world, you could be sitting on the couch watching a movie with your daughter and she may be receiving emotional and verbally threatening texts the whole time.”

Marty Vansickle at AWARE, said the organization has a hotline and offers free, confidential counseling at its facility in Sharon. The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County offers similar services.

Growing up in the 21st century

A

ccording to the U.S. Census, nearly a fourth of the nation is younger than 18. A tally in 2012 revealed the number at 23.5 percent of 313,875,685 — or more than 73 million.

The optimists among us would say that’s 73 million shots at making the country a better place. But others might say that’s a tall order: America’s youth has changed.

“I think they’ve changed because the

world around them has changed,” said Tina Greig, a guidance counselor in the Mercer School District. After 32 years as a teacher and counselor, Greig has seen how culture permeates youth, then manifests in their actions.

One of the biggest game changers is technology, she said. Although many teens and adolescents have become more sophisticated due to constant access to information, in many cases electronic

communication has thwarted their social skills.

“They’re used to resolving everything through texting and social media,” Greig said, explaining today’s students seem less apt to sit down, look at each other and converse one-on-one. As electronics displace personal interaction, bullying can sometimes intensify and escalate.

“I’ve seen a decline in basic social skills and coping skills: in dealing with

Today, teens are under a lot of pressure to do well in school. We are expected to know exactly what we want to do with the rest of our lives at age 18. We are supposed to pick the perfect major that will

suit us and choose the perfect university that will provide us with everything we need to succeed. Teens are constantly being reminded that it isn't easy entering the work force without a college degree.

Social media is another aspect that really separates my teenage years from my parents'. My parents relied on telephone calls to communicate and make plans.

Teens today are under pressure to have many friends on social media websites and to get “likes” on their different posts.

With social media, everyone is always aware what the entire community is doing in a matter of seconds.

Going along with social media I believe the amount of privacy teenagers get today is far less than that given to my parents’ generation. Everything anyone does is immediately spread throughout society, whether through social media websites like Twitter and Instagram or through a simple text message between a group of girls. With the little restriction teenagers receive today, a person's business can be known to the public in less than a minute — thus adding more pressure to the everyday life of a teenager.

Kalina Wisniewski, 17, North Jackson, Ohio I think my teen years are different from my parents for a few main reasons, one being technology. When my parents were teenagers video game systems were barely out, and now, kids as young as 6 and 7 have smart phones. Because of cell phones, teens today always know what each other are doing. I am constantly on my phone checking Twitter and Instagram just waiting for someone to post something. Most of the time I do it out of boredom, which I partially blame on the invention of cell phones.

You don't even have to leave your room.

The sad thing is people don't go out and do things together like they used to.

When my parents were teens, they had all their school friends as neighbors, so if they were bored they would just walk to a friend’s house and do something. Even now, when I do hang out with my friends, I would say about 70 percent of the time we are all on our phones.

Also, my mom attended a high school with a graduating class of 600 students.

Mine has about 60, so if you don't get

along with someone you have to deal with them every day because most people all have the same friends. But in my mom’s case, if she got in a fight with someone she could find a whole new group of friends.

Sometimes I wish I could live my teen years during the time period that my parents did, but other times I'm perfectly content with my life now.

Gary Revale, a high school guidance counselor in the Sharon School District, agrees technology has impacted teenage thinking. He also said today’s teens have more money to spend than previous generations. As a result, they have become the target for a barrage of advertising for everything from sneakers and cell phones to energy drinks.

“They are their own consumer group,” said Revale, who has worked as a teacher, coach and counselor since 1981.

“That’s made growing up a little more complicated.”

Although growing up has always included some competition — mostly played out through sports and games — Revale said competition is often played out in the consumer arena.

Aeryk McEwen, 14, Pulaski Sometimes I don’t think adults understand all of our challenges. Like, some things they went through as a kid still happen now. Some teens have social problems, may not think they look good — or even feel like they aren’t smart. That’s what parents are for. They comfort us in some situations.

The only time we don’t want comfort is when we think that things will go

away in the future or things don’t really matter. Well, the next time you think something is wrong with your teen, comfort them as much as possible and try to have a good time with them. A lot of the time I don’t tell my parents everything, but they always seem to make me happy somehow.

My parents can be a drag sometimes, but they always pull through for me. When they need help, I can help them because they help me. You may think they hate you, but they just want the best for you. I have learned that over the years spent with them.

The older generation always says, "I remember when I was your age" — and I think to myself “That was a different era. Everything has changed.”

The older generation loves archaic materials and tries to set examples for teens. Most adults don't understand teens, but it's not very difficult to un-

derstand us: Just ask questions and we will answer.

The teenagers back in time had protests to better themselves and their friends so they didn't get drafted. Now the biggest concern we have is when the new iPhone comes out or our friends’ scores on popular apps. The teenage life has changed due to technology and the cost of living.

Whether it’s a tough financial situation or a coming of age, every person undergoes change that helps develop his or her self and their person as a whole. As a result, when I think about the time period my parents grew up in and the time period I am growing up in right now, many differences and similarities come to mind.

And although my teenage years differ from those of my parents, I do not believe they are more difficult than theirs, but that growing up is just difficult as a whole.

When I think of the time period my parents grew up in, I think of Rock n Roll, big hair, and boxy glasses (which are becoming popular today). Their years were spent similarly to mine, playing sports and working hard in the classroom. However, they differ greatly. If my parents were assigned a research paper or other type of report, weeks at a time were spent in the library using encyclopedias and other sources available there. o two prom gowns look alike. Each girl brings her own style to the dress, influenced by florists, hair stylists and jewelry and shoe designers — all keeping pace with the latest trends.

“I would say 75 percent (of prom flowers) are clutch bouquets, and girls are back into the wrist corsages because of how they’re made now,” he said, listing organza ribbon and jewels among the wrist embellishments.

Embellishments are also appearing on clutch bouquets, which feature wrapped stems, coils and jewel accents, but the flowers themselves are more simple and elegant. Choices like orchids or cabbage roses often serve as the focal point amid greenery and understated blooms.

According to Renee Franek at Reyers Shoe Store in Sharon, footwear choices are anything but understated.

Prom shoes have moved beyond the black, silver or gold pumps hiding beneath gowns in earlier days. Tall, glitzy heels of all colors are appearing with glitter and aurora borealis stones.

According to Stephanie Farr, store manager of Stephanie Leigh Bridal in Girard, each season brings a slight variation on four basic dress styles. Despite the timeless presence of empire, ball gown, fit-and-flare or sheath, Farr said this year’s variations include more dresses with straps and cut-outs. Bling, like all-sequin dresses or full-beaded bodices, is making a showing along with short dresses with full-length, flowy overlays.

For showier dresses with beads and sequins, Farr said necklaces are out.

“You don’t want to pull focus away from the dress,” she said, explaining dangly earrings — and sometimes a bracelet — can suffice.

errara’s A Taste of Italy restaurant really does have something for everyone, from dinner in the restaurant to pizza from the drivethrough. Although the family-owned eatery appeals to a range of appetites, about 20 percent of Ferrara’s customers come for the gluten-free offerings, traveling from as far as Cleveland and upstate New York.

“Everything off the regular menu we can do gluten-free,” said Donna Ferrara, who operates the restaurant with her

husband David and their son Dom. “We really go through a ton of food. We make our own gluten-free meatballs,” she said, listing pizza, breads and desserts among the glutenfree options.

Located for nine years at the Thornton Hall Bowling Lanes, Ferrara’s relocated last October to its current location on East State Street in Sharon.

The restaurant can seat 70 or 75 and

PIZZA DOUGH Ingredients: 1 package dry yeast 1 cup warm water, 110 degrees 3 1⁄2 cups high-gluten flour 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons olive oil

Directions: Dissolve yeast in warm water and stir well. Set aside. Combine flour and salt in a 3to 4-quart bowl. Add yeast mixture and olive oil. Begin to mix. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons water if the mixture seems dry and stiff.

Turn out on a floured surface and knead for 6 to 8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl and cover. Let rise until double in bulk. Cut in half and roll out to desired size. Let rise in pans for 30 to 40 minutes.Top with sauce, cheese and toppings. Bake at 450 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Makes two, 12-inch pizzas with generous crusts.

RICOTTA GNOCCHI Ingredients: 1 pound ricotta cheese 1 egg 3 ⁄4 cup flour 1 ⁄2 cup grated Romano 1 teaspoon salt

Directions: Mix ingredients until they form a ball. Cut into four pieces. Roll balls into a rope and cut into small pieces. Place in boiling water until pieces float to the top. Serve with the sauce of your choice.

BROILED FISH Ingredients: 4 cod fillers 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon dry parsley Salt and pepper to taste 50

Directions: Pat fish dry and place in a baking dish that has been sprayed with a nonstick coating.

Pour lemon juice over the fish.Add salt and pepper. Sauté butter, garlic and parsley and drizzle over the fish. Bake at 400 degrees for 18 minutes or until fish is flaky.

PIEROGIES Dough ingredients: 5 cups flour 2 tablespoons shortening 1 tablespoon salt 2 eggs 2 cups warm water

Directions: Mix flour, shortening and salt at low speed until blended. In a separate bowl, mix water and eggs together, then add to the flour mixture a little at a time while mixing at low speed until a ball forms. Let the dough rest for a half hour. Cut dough in half and roll to about 1⁄4-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter or glass to cut dough into circles.

Filling ingredients: 6 to 7 potatoes, cut, boiled and drained 1 1⁄2 cups cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon salt

Directions: Mix ingredients together with a hand mixer. Place walnut-sized portions of filling into the circles and flatten. Fold circles in half and pinch edges shut. Drop into boiling water a dozen at a time until the pierogies float. Sauté with butter and onion.

PEEK A BOOS Ingredients: 2 sticks soft butter 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 tablespoon almond extract 3 cups flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 21-ounce can cherries

Directions: Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.Add eggs, one at a time, and almond extract. Sift together flour and baking powder. Combine with the other ingredients by mixing at a low setting. Spread 3⁄4 of dough evenly in the bottom of a greased, 9by-13-inch baking dish. Spread pie filling over the dough. Spoon small amounts of the remaining dough over the top of the filling. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar when cool.

Breakaway to

the National Cherry Blossom Festival

othing says spring like beautiful flowers and a visit to Washington, D.C., during the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

The annual event celebrates the 1912 gift of 3,000 trees from the mayor of Tokyo. Those trees were planted along the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park, in East Potomac Park and the grounds of the Washington Monument . Today, there are about 3,750 trees in 16 varieties, and 100 of the original trees still survive.

A couple years ago, Jamestown area resident Pat Donner boarded a motor coach for the festival and was not disappointed.

Pat, a retired schoolteacher, said she’d always wanted to see the blossoms, and a clip of the cherry trees on the evening news prompted her to act.

“Having had a long, cold snowy winter, all I had to see was pink flowers to know that I needed to go there,” Pat explained. She and her workout buddy Marian Resek, who had dreamt of visiting D.C., signed up for Anderson Coach & Travel’s express tour. Anderson offers structured, multi-day trips to Washington, D.C., but the express tour travels through the night to provide guests with a day to explore the city on their own.

Although the month-long festival fea-

tures a number of events including a street festival and a range of cultural performances, Pat and Marian’s visit coincided with the event’s closing parade.

For Pat and Marian, walking the mall to see the monuments was a priority.

They got a few surprises on their outing, too. They happened upon a military drill team competition at the Jefferson Memorial. At first, they couldn’t get close to the Lincoln Memorial because of an important visitor who turned out to be President Obama.

The Mercer County adventurers weren’t that interested in visiting museums, but they did make an effort to see the First Ladies Collection exhibit at the National Museum of American History.

Pat said photos through the glass don’t do justice to the gowns worn by some of the most important women in political history.

Pat said the one-day excursion allows “plenty of time to do lots of things,” but she recommended having a game plan before you go. Theirs did not include slowing their sight-seeing to eat. They packed snacks and hit up street vendors and kept on walking.

The weather can be a bit unpredictable in the spring, and Pat said the day of their visit was cold enough for them to need gloves in the morning but the blossoms were in bloom and bright tulips were everywhere. They even spotted a plump robin in a cherry blossom tree earlier than they appear at home.

Although the cherry blossom’s bloom schedule depends on the weather, the area buzzes with activity as more than 1 million people visit every year during various stages of bloom. Early on, the buds are bright pink and then burst into softer pink flowers before turning white and falling to the ground.

The 2014 festival is March 20 through April 13. Anderson Coach & Travel will offer two overnight trips and one express visit during that time frame. V

C

asual observation will usually show that young people look up to older peers. That is one reason the Young Life mentoring program seems to be thriving.

With the motto “Introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith,” the program is typically facilitated by college students, who reach out as mentors to youths in high school.

The mentors often connect with high school students by volunteering in secular activities, then inviting them to attend Young Life get-togethers.

Grove City College student Ashley Sealander, for instance, reaches out to students at Grove City High School, where she volunteers as an assistant coach for track and soccer.

Once students begin attending Young Life events, they sometimes bring their friends. With relationships established, mentors and students share a variety of activities individually or in small groups.

“You’ll go to coffee with the high school kids, play sports, soccer — you can do a wide variety of things,” said mentor Daniel Wilson, also a student at Grove City College.

“You can say ‘Hey, let’s go to Wendy’s and get a Frosty tonight’ or “Let’s go bowling.’ ... You have to be careful in a sense,” Wilson added. “People tend to think you’re a creeper. It’s a good thing when parents ask questions. It means they care about their kids.”

Sealander, from Virginia, agreed, saying she welcomes those relationships. “Their parents want to meet me and invite me over for dinner. I have families away from home.”

Wilson said college students can serve as leader mentors only after undergoing training, which takes about a semester to complete. Once authorized, the college students minister according to gender: females to females; males to males.

The relational ministry is more effective than preaching, Wilson said.

“We believe that’s what Jesus did,” he said. “Jesus did preach, but the people he really affected were the 12 disciples who he hung out with. We kind of base our ministry on that.”

Kristen Bishop, a junior at Grove City High School, began participating in Young Life at the beginning of her sophomore year, when friends invited her along.

“Seriously, it’s the best day of my week,” she said. “It really fits well for high schoolers. We play music; there’s dancing; we play crazy games. The scripture at the end is the best and most important part.”

According to Betsy Branscombe, public relations specialist in Young Life’s service center in Colorado Springs, Colo., the organization counts 5,937 ministries, or “service areas” worldwide. Those include a combined 1.4 million teenagers who participate and 58,295 college students and adults who volunteer and open their homes.

According to Darla Motta of Grove City, between 30 and 80 of them are present in her home on Tuesday nights, when the local group convenes for movie nights, games and other activities.

Motta began hosting the meetings in April when she overheard area director Brad Mowry say at a Rotary meeting the group lacked members and a place to congregate. Since that time, attendance has grown. Two of her sons are serving as leaders.

According to Branscombe, Young Life has a goal of reaching 2 million youths worldwide by 2016. The organization was founded in 1939 in Gainesville, Texas, and formed a board of trustees two years later. V For more information, go to www.younglife.org.

y some standards, the “man purse” is a hip, unisex accessory. By others, trend gives way to tradition, where the man purse — or “sporran” — is ancient news.

Unlike the man purse, explains Josh Briggs of Cambridge Springs, the sporran has been around since the 16th century, when it emerged atop the Scottish kilt.

“It weighs down the kilt so we don’t “Marilyn Monroe” while (bag)piping, he said.

It is not uncommon to see Josh and others wearing the Royal Stewarts tartan and related attire on the Edinboro University campus, where a community bagpipe band was started in 1992.

Josh, 25 and a senior, is a full member of the band and senior member of the school’s bagpiping program, which consists of one-credit classes at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. After completing the classes once, students can repeat them as mentors, helping beginning students master the basics of the Scottish Great Highland bagpipes.

Students begin instruction using a simple, instrument called a chanter to learn finger positions and breathing. The chanter resembles a recorder, but has a reed like a clarinet, Josh explained.

Once new students memorize three songs — “Scots Wha Hae,” “The Brown Haired Maiden” and “The High Road to Gairloch” — they graduate to playing real bagpipes, which consist of a chanter, bag and drones, responsible for the instrument’s continuous sound. Blowing into the chanter, squeezing the bag and fingering the notes requires coordination, musicians say, but the preliminary work of memorizing the songs is not a shallow endeavor.

“I got onto the bagpipes in 10 months,” Josh said.

Marissa Webb, 21, of Titusville also belongs to the band. Now a junior at EUP, Marissa began playing the pipes in her second semester on campus. Like many who join the band, she was moved by the music and likes the instrument’s novelty.

“It’s something different that a lot of people don’t play,” she said.

Josh’s 20-year-old sister Bethany, a freshman at EUP, became inspired after hearing Josh play.

“My brother and I are both Scottish, and I’ve always loved anything Celtic, or Gaelic,” she said. “My brother and I are the first two pipers in our entire family.”

All of the students describe a fellowship among the piping community.

“My brother describes bagpiping as joining a special society of people,” Bethany said.

According to Patrick Regan, director of bagpiping on campus, about 30 students belong to the program, although five were participating when Regan arrived at Edinboro five years ago.

Although Regan participates in club rush events to promote bagpiping, he isn’t surprised students want to play.

“The bagpipe is the most fun instrument to play,” he said. “For the first time, they have a chance to try it.

And for most of them, when they try it, they are hooked.”

Edinboro University is not the only western Pennsylvania school with a bagpipe presence. Carnegie Mellon University offers a major in bagpipe performance. V

Finley-Belgrad said a more pressing issue is that many family structures have shifted to two working parents or single-parent households, where time to interact with children is limited. Without this time to influence children through solid parental relationships, they often don’t learn to “self-regulate,” or control and monitor their thoughts, emotions and behavior.

Finley-Belgrad said this phenomenon combined with the anonymity of social media can easily compound problems.

Even nutrition can impact some individuals.

“Children who have a lot of issues with self-regulation have suicided based on bullying within the social media realm. It is also mirrored in some of the shootings we see,” she said, noting these occurrences happen on an entirely different level. “That leads to a whole lot of people feeling a whole lot less safe on different levels,” she said.

Revale said this lack of regulation is just one ingredient Another is increased power that comes from access to information, which was once filtered and presented by adults. Now, youths often have the information before adults do, he said.

That power is accompanied by increasing pressure.

“Kids feel squeezed. They feel they have to stand up and make a statement.

They show their emotions in inappropriate ways,” he said.

Both Revale and Greig said the pressure derives in part from more stringent academic requirements, standardized testing and early coaching to choose a career path.

“I know they feel a lot of pressure to succeed. It seems to increase every year,” Greig said.

“Many of them are in extra-curriculars. They’re very, very busy. A lot of them have jobs after school. Their lives are much more complicated than, I think, ours were,” she said.

Despite these pressures, Revale and Greig both maintain full faith that their students are up to the challenge.

“We really do have some wonderful students in our school,” Greig said.

“They’ve mastered the consumer game and the technology game,” Revale added. “They all kind of know what’s happening in that realm.”

Does he think they will be OK? “Yep. I do. I think these guys will turn us around.” V Views & Voices

nearly as difficult to complete. With technology like iPads, laptops and smart phones, information is at our fingertips, literally.

Today more people spend time inside playing video games or on the computer.

Back then, there wasn’t as much to do inside, so going out from dawn till dusk was sort of “normal” during the summer time. And although I prefer to be outside, it is nice to have these commodities of instant entertainment available today.

Also, while attending school, there was a more simplistic way of handling situations. Let’s say for instance, a fight broke out in the cafeteria. Back then, a bit of time in the principal’s office and a detention or two after school could handle the situation effectively. Now however, a fight in the cafeteria has police involved, arrests made, and possible charges pressed. In a sense, it seems as if people have become so focused on being politically correct that even small discipline situations can be blown out of proportion.

Although they differ, I can’t say that our teenage years are more difficult. It seems as if there is a balance between the good things introduced today versus the bad consequences that go along with them. For instance, technology today makes research papers easier to accomplish. However, that same technology can take you away from your work and put you on track to beat your high score in Flappy Bird. And even when you do find the information you need, it’s sometimes difficult to tell whether that information is true.

I think it’s just difficult growing up as a whole. There’s still the pressure to fit in that there was back then, along with the desire to be in the popular group. People still get made fun of, relationships start and end and some friendships are made now that will last for years to come.

Policies in schools are still made, homework and study hours are still done and the popular groups in school such as the football team are still popular. Growing up is still tough, and it’s a struggle we face every day.

Growing up is still a challenge. It still carries the same burden it did back then, and it will continue to for generations to come. That being said, in today’s consistently changing world, it gives me a sense of peace to know that some things never change. V
