LIVING LOCAL History of Our Region

H

ome. What does it mean to you? Is it the street where you grew up? The backyard where you played tag with the neighbors? The home where you raised your family? The people that made you who you are today? Where is home?

As a Shenango Valley native, I’ve always loved where I call home. We have snowy winters, sunny summers and who could scoff at the sheer beauty of fall in our region? Here I learned to ride a bicycle in my grandmother’s driveway. I have spent countless afternoons walking Buhl Park. I have shopped the Grove City Outlets, enjoyed ice cream cones at The Corral and tapped my toes at the many venues that host live music on weekends. This, to me, is home.

This month, join Valley Voices as we honor the communities that make our region so special ... and the reason we call this portion of the United States home, in “Living Local -- History of Our Region.”

Learn about the lasting legacy of Frank and Julia Buhl on the Shenango Valley and how their visions from more than 100 years ago are still relevant today. Then, explore the history of our area

(and add to it) in Mercer County Reflections, an online history project that allows the community to contribute stories of Mercer County’s past and present.

Next, explore some of the faces, places and fun information about the valleys in our region: Lawrence and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania and Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio, in “Hometown History”. This compilation does not begin to scratch the surface of our rich history, so feel free to share your favorite historical facts with us on Facebook! And remember, there is plenty more history to explore, so visit our local historical societies and libraries for more information. You just may be surprised at some of the things you will learn!

CHIEF DESIGN OFFICER AT WESEX CORPORATION, WEST MIDDLESEX

D

o something you love and you will never work a day in your life. For Melanie Panutsos, each day is more than time spent ‘in the office’ — it is her passion.

A Beaver County native, Melanie earned her undergraduate degree in architecture and masters degrees in architecture and business administration at Kent State University. After college, she spent five years working as a licensed architect at Desmone Architects in Pittsburgh.

“While I was at Desmone, I was project manager for all of the design/ build projects with Wesex Corporation, which is how I met Greg Koledin [chief construction officer at Wesex]. I loved the work, but often felt that I was progressing too slowly, and I wanted somewhere to run. Greg suggested that we join forces.

For me, the idea of Wesex represented this incredible and unique chance to work with someone who I’d consider to be probably one of the most intelligent and creative individuals on the planet, while getting to maintain a level of autonomy that I was desperate for,” Melanie said.

She continued, “Still, for awhile I tried to talk myself out of an amazing and challenging opportunity for the sake of a comfortable safety net, but ultimately I closed my eyes and jumped. Greg likes to tell people that it was the ability to bring my dog to work every day that sealed the deal. He’s probably right!”

Currently, Melanie serves as the chief design officer at Wesex, alongside Greg.

“When I joined Greg, the idea was that, since our management styles are wildly different, we would work together more

14

like partners. Construction would be his domain, design would be mine,” she said.

“The intricacies of design and construction, however, can and should be so constantly intermingled that there is no clear delineation — this is what we both love about the construction process and the design/build delivery method. So, in actuality, we both do whatever needs done based on whomever of us is free in the moment.”

A ‘typical day’ for Melanie is everchanging — from laying out office space to budgeting construction projects, from project accounting to re-writing the company handbook or a construction site visit to coordinate with subcontractors.

“That’s been the true beauty of my time at Wesex — getting to learn, try, fail and succeed at just about every facet of the design and construction industry.”

When not at the office, Melanie enjoys yoga, sketching, home improvement projects, target shooting, drinking bourbon, reading and watching weird and random documentaries (especially all things true-crime-related).

She technically lives in Pittsburgh with her Great Dane, Lou, but often they can both be found on the couch at Wesex “after losing track of time.”

Melanie is a member of the American Institute of Architects, a member of the National Counsel of Architectural Registration Boards, a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Associate and a “collector of other professional letters and acronyms.”

Q&A WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT YOUR CAREER? I live for a challenge and I love to solve problems. What I most love about my career path is that it affords me countless opportunities to dive into problems both big and small and create meaningful solutions for others; ones that impact the environment in which they live, work and find respite.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR CAREER? Quite honestly, my biggest career challenge was making the decision to come to Wesex. Prior to Wesex, my career had followed a relatively linear and traditional path for that of an architect, and I had a lot of professional cover from co-workers if there was something I did not know. Greg, and Wesex, gave me the freedom and flexibility to spread my wings and expand my knowledge quickly in a multitude of areas, but it also meant entering into a whole new side of the design and construction industry for

which I had, at the time, very limited experience. Making the switch, for someone as risk-averse as I am, took me far outside of my comfort zone. I’m not sure you can really “overcome” a challenge like that, but the more I learned and the more time I put in, the easier it started to become to make decisions with some degree of confidence.

WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION AND WHY? You can find inspiration everywhere. I don’t think there is any one person I could consider to be a role model, but ask me about just about anyone I’ve met in my life (even the people I’ve been less than fond of) and I could probably name you at least one quality they possess that I’ve found to be inspiring and tried to study/ emulate. That’s the beauty of the world — contrast. There is so much to learn from everyone and everything you encounter if you learn to look for it.

HOW DO YOU ENJOY SPENDING YOUR DOWN TIME? I’m not sure I know what down time is, but I spend most of my time with my 135-pound Great Dane, Lou. He is Wesex’s “Head of Security and Chief Cuddle Officer,” and has been known to visit a job site or two in his safety vest. In terms of relaxation, I love what I do, so for me, stress relief almost always takes the same form as work, just in a different context. When I need a break from the office, you can usually find me designing or building something either at my own house Lou or for a friend/sibling.

WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT OUR REGION? I am used to working in the city, so coming to the Shenango Valley to work at Wesex was a bit of an adjustment for me, but I’ve come to love the sense of community. The region has a strong network of builders, makers and all-around solid individuals. I have made more professional connections with whom I would consider personal friends in my first year at Wesex than I had over the course of five years of active networking in the city.

The Shenango Valley is a community which values individuals, honor and respect above deal-making. It’s an “old school” way of doing business that I’ve come to regard highly.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? I think for me, success is simply loving what you do and creating enough stability in your life that you are able to do it without fear of where your next mortgage payment will come from. I view success, personally, as reaching the point of complete independence and self-sufficiency while doing something innately meaningful with the time you have on Earth. Know the SIGNS and SYMPTOMS of a

STROKE

By George Garrow, MD Strokes –– this is a topic that is very important to me, not only professionally, but personally. My mother suffered from a severe stroke years ago, and I saw first-hand the devastating consequences of this condition. I am well aware of the impact of a stroke, not only on the person who has had a stroke, but on those who love and care for them, as well.

A stroke happens when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off, limiting the supply of oxygen. Brain cells begin to die, leading to damage to that area of the brain — sometimes permanently.

It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke so that medical help can be obtained quickly. Stroke symptoms include: SUDDEN numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body SUDDEN confusion, trouble speaking or understanding SUDDEN trouble seeing in one or both eyes SUDDEN trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination SUDDEN severe headache with no known cause Please also familiarize yourself with FAST, an easy way to remember and identify the most common symptoms of a stroke: FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?

TIME: If you observe any of these symptoms or signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.

If possible, please note the time of the first onset of the symptoms and signs.

This information is important and can affect treatment decisions.

What to do when you join the ranks of

#MeToo

A

ll of us have seen the explosion of disclosures about sexual harassment in the workplace through the recent #MeToo movement.

This has resulted in resignation and firings of powerful people who utilized their position to prey on more vulnerable people, both men and women. So far, the focus has been on Hollywood, politics and big business. But what about other sectors of work that do not include celebrity or media attention? Workplaces have workplace safety policies and procedures. But what do you do if you believe you are being sexually harassed at work?

DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU: Each person has a different life experience and situation. Do you have a trusted person you can confide in at home? At work? Try calling the AWARE hotline (888.981.1457) to talk out what you are feeling and experiencing.

TELL THEM TO STOP: If you feel safe doing so, tell the offender to stop. In person, face-to-face or in writing. Be specific about the behavior or conduct that is bothering you. You do not like it and you want it to stop.

DOCUMENT: Write down the date, time and specifics of each incident and who was present. Keep any form of harassing communication (notes, pictures, email, social media posting). Keep your performance reviews or records that mention your job performance. You might consider keeping these things at home and not at your workplace.

REVIEW: Review your company’s sexual harassment policy and complaint process.

If you are part of a union, ask your union representative about grievance procedures.

GET HELP: The EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) has updated direction for businesses of all sizes. Learn more at eeoc.gov/laws/ types/sexual_harassment_guidance.cfm.

Check with your local Chamber of Commerce for assistance. Contact AWARE for technical support on workplace safety. Keeping work safe for all, from all forms of abusive behavior, includes everybody: you, co-workers, supervisors, executives and owners.

Sexual harassment in the workplace also impacts the bottom line in terms of productivity, reputation, staff turnover and retention.

The hallmark of AWARE’s work is innovative program development and change to meet the needs of victims of all ages. In her career of social activism spanning over 40 years, she is active on a host of boards working on economic development, community change and advocacy on behalf of the needs of victims of domestic and sexual violence, locally, regionally, and state-wide. T

he history of Frank and Julia Buhl, both born into families of prominent industrialists, is one worthy of its own history book. Frank, known as the “Father of the Industrial Shenango Valley” due to his successes in the steel and iron ore industries, and Julia, the granddaughter of Shenango Valley’s coal industry pioneer, T.J. Porter, allowed the Buhls to live a life of wealth. But, in addition to the impact Frank Buhl had on Mercer County’s industrialization, the Buhls’ humanitarian efforts have left a lasting impression on Mercer County.

Frank and Julia Buhl married on February 8, 1888 in Sharon, and with their nuptials, vowed to give back to the community that brought them together.

According to the biography of Frank H. Buhl, “His humanitarian spirit found expression not only in gifts of money, but also in personal interest in and service to the people of Sharon, the community in which he spent the greater part of his life and the prominence of which as an industrial center is due in large measure to his efforts. He was one of the outstanding business leaders and one of the most honored citizens of western Pennsylvania.”

The Buhls created opportunity for the valley. Beginning with a home that they shared with the community and leading to a foundation that still today benefits those in need, the legacy of the Buhls continues one step at a time.

MORE THAN A HOME: F.H. Buhl Mansion ~ Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa

A historical landmark on Sharon’s East State Street, Frank and Julia’s 14-room mansion is a story in itself. “The Richardsonian Romanesque “castle” was a wedding present from Frank to Julia,” Laura Ackley, general manager of Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa, said. “The mansion was designed by renowned architect Charles Owlsey (who also designed the Mercer County Courthouse and St. John’s Episcopal Church, to name just a few). Construction began in 1890 and the Buhls moved into their home in 1896.”

The six-year project utilized a New York builder and 150 Italian bricklayers and artisans. “In return for their efforts, Frank helped them gain their American 22

citizenship papers,” Buhl Mansion’s history reads.

Frank passed in 1918 and Julia in 1936, and Julia’s nephew, Henry Forker, inherited the home in 1936. In 1956, he turned the home into three separate apartments and in the early 1970s Forker sold to David E. Braun and Andrew J. Burin, a real estate developer and an architect, respectively,” Laura said. “Due to the tenacity of Braun and Burin, the mansion was accepted into the National Registry of Historical Homes on December 2, 1977. This designation truly saved the landmark from ruin in future years and a revolving door of ownership.”

The mansion changed ownership and served numerous purposes over the years. Eventually, it was vacated. “After years of neglect, Donna Winner and her late husband Jim purchased the mansion in 1996, putting 3.5 million dollars into restoration. Now celebrating 20 years of hospitality, Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa opened its doors to the public on New Year’s Eve 1997,” Laura said.

“The Buhls were world-class hosts and loved to throw lavish parties, often bringing in caterers and bands from Cleveland and Pittsburgh.”

F.H. Buhl Club ~ Buhl Community Recreation Center Built in 1901 and presented to the community in 1903, the F.H. Buhl Club was one of the first facilities Frank Buhl gifted to the valley. “Buhl’s vision was to offer an asset to the community where people of all ages could gather for recreation, socialization and to build character through learning,” Jason Kmick, executive director of Buhl Community Recreation Center, said. “He also believed that services provided by a center should always be offered at an affordable price.”

“Originally, the club opened to service young men and boys offering bowling, billiards, a reading room, a music room, a library, a gymnasium and a small auditorium. It was not until years later that the center also offered programming for both men and women,” Jason said.

With the building of the recreation center also came the Board of Trustees of The F.H. Buhl Club, a self-perpetuating charitable association established to hold the title to properties available for the people of the Shenango Valley. Today the

Buhl Trustees work to maintain Buhl Farm Park with funds from the Buhl Trust as well as community donations. The Buhl Community Recreation Center has it’s own board of directors and receives no funding from the Buhl Trust.

“The landscape in our region has certainly changed over time and the community has seen its fair share of difficulties. However, through it all the BCRC has remained a constant. F.H. Buhl Farm ~ Buhl Park Between 1907 and 1911, Frank Buhl purchased nearly 300 acres of farm land that was developed into an outdoor recreational park called Buhl Farm. Free to the public, the park was intended to offer recreation for the community, Tom Kuster, board member of Buhl Park, said.

“Landscape architecture was evolving because of President Roosevelt and there was a bigger promotion of the outdoors.

When designing the park, Buhl and landscape architect, George Rettig, made sure to keep the picnic groves and trees, but also included baseball fields, tennis, swimming and golf.”

In 1915, “The Farm” was deeded to the same nine Trustees of the F.H. Buhl Club as a gift to the community. In 1918, Frank died. But, through the Trustees, the park proved to be a much needed addition to the valley. “I believe Frank Buhl wanted a gathering place for all the people in our community. A place where everyone could go to meet new people and have fun all while being outdoors in nature,” Tom Roskos, executive director of Buhl Park Corporation said. “He wanted to provide

Christian H. Buhl Hospital ~ Buhl Regional Health Foundation Beyond homes, recreations, socializations and business is wellness.

Frank Buhl, alongside his father, Christian, built the Christian H. Buhl Hospital in 1896 to meet the healthcare demands in Mercer County. A valley necessity today known as Sharon Regional Medical Center, the hospital constructed by the father-son duo has serviced tens of thousands of families.

“The health issues faced by the Buhls

and the communities of the Shenango Valley in the 1890s were also impacted by the social determinants of health. With the growth of the steel industry came a large number of people who settled in the Valley and worked in the steel industry.

Many workers suffered work related injuries due to lack of safety measures,” Mickey Gula, executive director of the Buhl Regional Health Foundation, said.

“There were large families who lived in neighborhoods of company houses.

Antibiotics were not available and contagious diseases, such as diphtheria, small pox, typhoid and pneumonia were common. Dr. Griswold, along with a group of physicians, joined community leaders to form a foundation to raise money to build a hospital. Eventually the foundation grew and was able to pay for 80-percent of the cost of the new hospital. The state of Pennsylvania covered the remaining 20-percent.”

In 2012, The Buhl Regional Health Foundation was formed from the Christian H. Buhl Legacy Trust, which was created in 1893 with the hospital.

“The Buhl Regional Health Foundation is a health conversion foundation that was formed following the sale of Sharon Regional Health System to Community Health Systems of Franklin Tennessee in April of 2014,” Mickey said. “There are more than 40 health conversion

VALLEY CORVETTE CLUB POURS HEART AND SOUL INTO CARS AND THE COMMUNITY

ongs have been written about the legendary Chevy Corvette and some die-hard enthusiasts would rather walk before driving anything else. Ask any member of the Shenango Valley Corvette Club.

Founded in 1985, the SVCC is more than 200 members strong, representing 20 zip codes in Pennsylvania and Ohio. It goes without saying they love their cars, but truth be told, they love their communities even more. That commitment is evident in the money they raise each year to give back to numerous

organizations throughout our valleys.

Many founding members are still active in the club. Dennis Webber of Greenville has been SVCC president for five years. “We all share a love of cars,” Dennis said. “We feel blessed and it’s rewarding to share with others.”

The club is mostly about building relationships, making new friends and contributing to the community, all while talking about the dream car built in 1953, of course. “Every car has a story,” Dennis said.

In sharing their passion for the

beautiful Corvette, members gather regularly for car shows, cruise-ins and parades, but also for fundraising events to benefit valley organizations. As a 501(C) (7) social club, the SVCC donates to the Community Food Warehouse, Second Harvest Food Bank, Meals On Wheels both in Trumbull and Mercer counties, Lakeland Community Center in Linesville, Salvation Army Sharon, Salvation Army Trumbull County, Angels for Animals, Children’s Aid Society of Mercer County, K-9 SOS of Trumbull County, Wounded Warriors, Disabled Veterans of Mercer County and Trumbull County, Greenville, Farrell, Sharon and Trumbull County libraries, Back Pack Programs for Mercer and Trumbull counties and Feed Our Sheep of Lawrence County, among others.

In the past 10 years alone, the club has donated more than $80,000 for local charities. In 2017, members gave $13,500 to assist area organizations.

Donations to these charities are funded by annual car shows at Quaker Steak and Lube in downtown Sharon and Greenwood Chevrolet in Hubbard, Ohio.

SVCC also spends a day at Warren Amphitheatre to earn a percentage of the gate. The largest fundraiser is the annual Spring Classic Dance and Chinese Auction held each April at Yankee Lake Ballroom in Brookfield Township with more than 500 people in attendance.

According to Lori Weston, executive director of the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County, SVCC is recognized as a primary source of aid and service to others in the valley. “The CFWMC is very grateful to the SVCC for its continued support of our mission to feed the hungry in Mercer County,” she said. “Their generosity enables us to assist our children, seniors, families and individuals as they struggle to put food on the table. The SVCC is a dedicated group of caring and compassionate people who are always willing to contribute to the needs of our community.”

Claudia Leyde, executive director of the Mercer County Children’s Aid Society, could not agree more. “Every year the members of the Shenango Valley Corvette Club take time to make sure that Children’s Aid Society can be a good ‘Santa Helper’ and provide the gifts on many children’s wish lists. We are privileged to benefit from their sincere dedication to children.”

In addition to fundraising efforts, the SVCC was also a major contributor to the Mercer County Historical Society in its attribution of the 1915 Twombly tandem cycle car that was manufactured in Sharon.

Members enjoy car shows of any size, from 50 cars at the BP Station in Hermitage on Friday summer evenings to 5,000 cars at the Carlisle Classic Car Show in Carlisle.

“What we do is fun,” Dennis said. “It’s fun to own these beautiful cars, talk about them, make friends because of them, and it is especially fun to be able to raise money with them to benefit our community. • Robert and John Davidson: The first settlers in Wampum, the Davidsons immigrated from Ireland in 1796, making the town the first to be settled in Lawrence County.

• American High Explosives Company: Later known as Burton Explosive Division of American Cyanamid and Chemical Corporation, American High Explosions Company produced an extensive amount of dynamite for the construction of the Panama Canal sometime after 1907. During World War II, the company also manufactured plasma for the war effort. On July 7, 1964, tragedy struck at the complex. A series of explosions took the lives of five men, tossed a locomotive 450-feet and knocked buildings from their foundations.

• Alexander Sharpe Fullerton: Son to James Fullerton, one of the original settlers in Lawrence County, this 13-year-old was an avid doodler and notetaker, as displayed in his notebook that dates back to 1824. (Photo by John Hudson, Lawrence County Historical Society) • Dr. Elizabeth McLaughry: Credited as the first local female doctor in New Castle in 1895, Dr. McLaughry had her own practice. In addition to her credit as the area’s first female doctor, she is also known as the first to use a new serum for the typhoid fever epidemic that broke out. All of her patients survived.

• Paul Minner: New Wilmington native and former professional baseball player, Minner pitched for the New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago Cubs during his career in Major League baseball from 1946 to 1956.

• Nancy Arnott: In the 1800s, Nancy Arnott tapped maple trees for syrup on Nancy’s Island, near Pulaski. At one point, she was dramatically rescued from the island during a flood. Later, Nancy’s Island Resort included 14-acres of attractions including mineral bathhouses, a toboggan slide, bicycle track, dance pavilion, merry-go-round, picnic area and boats, including an Island Queen paddleboat.

• John Carlysle Stewart: Along the Neshannock Creek, John Carlysle Stewart, with support of others, erected a grist and sawmill, now called Volant.

• McConnell’s Mill: Thomas McConnell purchased a famous gristmill on the Slippery Rock Creek, McConnell’s Mill, in 1875. Purchased with his brother James and son John, McConnell’s Mill was an undertaking after his careers in the oil drilling industry as well as a military career during the Civil War. By 1957, McConnell’s Mill was deemed a state park in Pennsylvania.

• St. Mary’s School, New Castle: The first parochial school was created by St. Mary’s Church Catholic Church in New Castle in 1871.

FAST FACTS: • The Flood of 1913 hit New Castle on Easter Sunday, March 23, 1913. This natural disaster was responsible for the destruction of the Old Black Bridge on the Shenango River.

• Shenango China (Shenango Pottery) was founded by James M. Smith. This popular china left a legacy — from specialized china for United States presidents to intricately detailed sets for families, the company underwent a name change in 1941 to Castleton China.

• Established by Joseph A. Clavelli in 1943, New Castle School of Trades was widely attended after World War II when veterans were given educational opportunities through the G.I. Bill.

• President Warren G. Harding is the only U.S. president to have traveled through Lawrence County during his life and after his death. In 1923, his funeral train came through as it headed for Ohio.

• S.N.P.J. in Lawrence County is the smallest borough of all in the state of Pennsylvania! It is also home to a museum dedicated to Slovenian heritage and an exhibit dedicated to Frankie Yankovich.

• A unique 10-sided house, located near Pulaski on old U.S. 422 (one mile from PA 208 at New Bedford) was built after 1848 and is connected to the Underground Railroad.

• Harlansburg is home to Pennsylvania’s longest continuous cave.

• The Matheny Tavern, which would now reside in Ellwood City, was a popular stop amongst famous guests, including Charles Dickens, Thomas Moore, James Finnemore Cooper and President Zachary Taylor. As a young man, President James A. Garfield was nursed back to health after falling into the nearby canal. In 1885, the Pennsylvania Railroad purchased the tavern property, located near the Beaver County line, and developed Rock Point, which included a dance hall, hotels and amusements.

• The Scottish Rite Cathedral, built in 1924 in New Castle, has housed many memorable performances — including one by Johnny Cash!

• The first steam railroad to run locally, the Ohio and Pennsylvania, was stationed in Enon Valley.

• In 1881, the Central District and Printing Telegraph Company was the first to provide telephone services locally.

• New Wilmington Globe is the longest continuously run newspaper in the county, having been in business since 1879.

• Dora Schwebel: Baker Morris Schwebel traveled from Poland to America in 1898. He settled in New York City and sent for his younger brother, Joseph, in 1900. Joseph Schwebel moved to Youngstown and began working in the Ozersky Brothers Bakery.

He married his first cousin, Dora Goldberg, and he soon decided to leave the Ozersky’s bakery to start his own. His first try with an unknown partner failed. Not long after, one of Joseph’s sons heard his mother talking to his father. She said, “If you’re going to have a partner, I’ll be your partner.” Joseph and Dora opened a new shop in Campbell in 1906 below their small apartment. Joseph baked while Dora went out with a huge basket on her arm. She sold loaves of bread to mill workers and their families.

Within two years, the bakery was a success.

It grew and moved to Center Street in Hazelton.

The Schwebel’s had six children before Joseph died in 1928. Full responsibility for the family and the business was left to Dora “Ma” Schwebel. Many felt she would be unable to manage, but she persevered and ran the business successfully. In 1951, Schwebel’s opened the plant on Midlothian Boulevard. After more expansions and a big marketing campaign to reach other parts of Ohio, the little family-run bakery became a multi-million dollar business.

• Arby’s: Forrest and LeRoy Raffle grew up in New Castle. After college, the brothers purchased a restaurant equipment company in Youngstown. Raffel Brothers, Inc. became a leading food service consulting company. After the success of the McDonald’s “fast food” model, the Raffels decided to start their own chain.

They served fresh cut roast beef sandwiches with barbeque or horseradish sauce. The sandwiches cost 69 cents; three times as much as a McDonald’s hamburger, but Forrest and LeRoy were confident the quality would attract customers. In 1976 the Raffels sold Arby’s to Royal Crown Cola for $18 million. Today Arby’s has more than 3,600 stores.

• Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini: Born in Youngstown in 1961, Ray Mancini was the son of boxer Lenny ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini. Ray became a professional boxer in 1978 and carried on his father’s nickname. Mancini won the World Boxing Association’s lightweight title on May 8, 1982, in a match against Arturo Frias, and held that title until June 1, 1984. Mancini officially retired from boxing in 1985, then came back for title fights in 1989 and 1992. He got involved in filmmaking and other business ventures after his boxing career.

First Arby’s restaurant

The first Arby’s restaurant opened on Boardman-Canfield Road (U.S. Route 224) in Boardman on July 23, 1964. This structure borrowed designs from the old American west, with a rolling roof that looked like the cover on a Conestoga wagon and a 40-foot tall neon sign shaped like a cowboy hat.

The “R-B” in the Arby’s name stands for Raffel Brothers, not roast beef as many believe!

Strouss, West Federal Street

• Downtown Youngstown: Youngstown was a rapidly growing industrial city in the early 20th-century. In 1900 the city had a population of about 45,000, by 1920 had reached 120,000, and by 1930, more than 170,000 people. Immigrants came from all over eastern and southern Europe to fill positions in the steel mills. The city grew and by 1930 the downtown featured a number of skyscrapers, public buildings and large department stores. These structures were designed by prominent local architects, as well as those with a national reputation.

West Federal Street – McKelvey’s, Liberty Dome and Hippodrome

• Strouss-Hirshberg Department Store: Bernard Hirshberg and Isaac Strouss were both born in Germany in the mid19th Century. Strouss left Germany and traveled to the United States in 1865. Upon arrival in Youngstown, Strouss was taken in by his distant cousin, David Theobald, who also gave Strouss a job at his downtown store, D. Theobald & Company. At Theobald’s, Strouss met Bernard Hirshberg, who was a salesman and bookkeeper there, and the two became friends. They formed a partnership and purchased Theobald’s business in 1875, re-opening as the Enterprise Store.

The Enterprise Store became known for excellent products and customer service.

Outgrowing their original location, Strouss and Hirshberg moved the store in 1887 to the newly constructed Wick Building on West Federal Street. The store continued to grow, offering more and more merchandise, and became incorporated as the Strouss-Hirshberg Company in 1906.

As its founders aged, their family members took up leadership roles in the Strouss-Hirshberg Company. Isaac Strouss died in 1925, and Bernard

Hirshberg in 1931. Clarence Strouss, Isaac’s son, worked in the store as a teenager and later led the company as it opened its largest West Federal Street store in 1926.

Strouss-Hirshberg merged with retail giant, May Company, in the 1950s, while continuing to do business under its own name. In the 1970s, the company shortened its name to Strouss. In January of 1986, the May Company announced the merger of Strouss and Pittsburgh-based Kaufmann’s department stores. The combined store name became StroussKaufmann. Later that year, the May Company announced the closure of the West Federal Street Strouss-Kaufmann.

After 111 years in business, a downtown landmark was gone.

FAST FACTS: • Mill Creek Park in Canfield is one of the largest metropolitan parks in the nation!

• Powers Auditorium at the DeYor Performing Arts Center, Youngstown, was built by the Warner Brothers in honor of their late brother, Sam. • The penalty flag used in football was invented by YSU coach Dwight Bede. His wife sewed the first flag for a game against Oklahoma City University in October of 1941.

• The Good Humor ice cream bar, as well as the neighborhood ice cream truck, were invented by Youngstown confectioner, Harry Burt, in the 1920s.

• Youngstown’s first high school, The Rayen School, which was free and open to anyone of any religious denomination or ethnicity, opened in 1866, in a brick building that still stands today on Wick Avenue near Wood Street. It was the only high school in Youngstown for 45 years.

Mercer

Mercer County, Pennsylvania was founded in March of 1800 and named after Revolutionary War hero, General Hugh Mercer. Originally intended as Donation Land for Revolutionary veterans, the county was a part of The Last Purchase of 1784 and included Salem, Sandy Lake, Coolspring and Neshannock townships. The county seat, Mercer, was not laid out until 1803, by a number of people, including Benjamin Stokely, who was the surveyor of Fourth and Fifth Donation Districts, and was incorporated in 1814.

• Billy Whitla: In March of 1909, 8-year-old Billy Whitla was kidnapped in Sharon and held for $10,000 ransom, as left in a note to his parents.

Kidnapped by James H. Boyle, Billy was taken by buggy, outside of his school, and they prepared to board a train headed for Cleveland. Billy’s kidnapping made national headway, and after four days, James and Helen Boyle accepted the ransom paid by Whitla’s uncle, Frank Buhl. When arrested, the ransom money was found sewn into Helen’s skirt.

• Stoneboro Fair: The Great Stoneboro Fair has been a family tradition for families from Mercer County and beyond since it started in 1868 by the Mercer County Agricultural and Manufacturing Society of Stoneboro.

• Amelia Earhart: The daughter to a Thiel College, Greenville, alum Edwin S. Earhart, Amelia Earhart visited the college in 1932, when she received an honorary Doctor of Science degree!

• Richard Travis, Senior: Travis was an African American “free man” who established a fugitive slave town on 150-acres along Sandy Lake. The land, today known as Stoneboro, was called Liberia, and became a well-known sanctuary for fugitive slaves on route from New Castle and Sheakleyville stations, heading north toward Canada on the Underground Railroad.

• Mercer County Courthouse: Mercer County’s first courthouse, a two-story wooden home, was built in 1807 and was deemed a total loss after it caught fire in 1866. A second courthouse was built to replace it, soon after, and took claim as home to the county’s tower clock. In December of 1907, after the tower clock was installed, the courthouse was destroyed in another fire.

by Charles Owsley.

• J.A. Farrell: J.A. Farrell served as the president of U.S. Steel, Carnegie Steel, American Steel and Tin Plate, American Steel and Wire, Central Furnace and the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad. Originally called South Sharon, Farrell got its name from the notable Shenango Valley businessman in 1912. In the 1930s, Farrell was changed from a borough to a city.

• Stefan Banic: A Slovak immigrant who lived in Greenville, Banic was awarded the first patent for the parachute, which was issued on August 25, 1914.

• Alf Landon: Born in 1887, the grandson to Reverend William Mossman, pastor of the Methodist church in West Middlesex, Alf Landon moved to Kansas and pursued a career in politics. In 1935, Landon decided to run for the U.S. presidency and made his official campaign announcement in West Middlesex at Tam O’Shanter golf course in August 1936. Landon lost the campaign to President Roosevelt.

• Pennsylvania Railroad Station: With routes to Erie and Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Railroad Station in Sharon was one of numerous routes that ran alongside canals. The paths were originally footpaths that were expanded to suit trains. Eventually, the railroads were used to connect many small towns in the region.

• Avenue of 444 Flags: To honor the Iranian Hostage Crisis from 1979 to 1981, owner Tom Flynn hoisted 100 flags along the avenue leading into what is today known as America’s Cemetery. A flag was hoisted daily until all hostages were released 444 days after they were taken on January 21, 1981.

• Joy Cone Company in Hermitage, a Shenango Valley staple since it started in 1918, is titled as the largest ice cream company in the world!

FAST FACTS: • Mercer County was first inhabited by Native Americans. The land was originally controlled by Erie or Cat Nation (Eriehronon) tribes in the early to mid 1600s. In 1656, the Iroquois Confederation conquered the Erie Indians. When white settlers came to the area, it was controlled by the Seneca Indians, also known as the corn planters. Other tribes also settled in the area, including the Delawares (Lemi-Lenape), the Shawnee and the Wyandot.

• Floods: Beginning on Easter Sunday, the Flood of 1913 peaked after three days when the Shenango River rose to 18.6feet. The valley saw numerous floods afterward, including the Flood of 1959, Smiley’s Coney Island which occurred during flood of 1959 after the Shenango River flooded from heavy rain, which froze the water through downtown Sharon.

• Buhl Day, the annual Labor Day celebration at Buhl Park, Hermitage, began in 1916. To this day, Buhl Day is celebrated by people near and far.

• Tornadoes: Mercer County has experienced the aftermath of sweeping tornadoes through the region more than once. In June, 1947, a tornado killed numerous people, while the May 31, 1985 tornado destroyed Wheatland and caused 12 fatalities.

• The (Sharon) Herald made its first appearance as a weekly newspaper on Thursday, April 14, 1864. It was founded by R.C. and James Frey in an office located at the foot of Pitt Street … until it was washed into the Shenango River during the Flood of 1913!

• Mercer County has been a stop for a number of U.S. politicians — including Richard Nixon in 1959, John F. Kennedy in 1960 and George H.W. Bush in 1985.

Officially a part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, the county was named after Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull. Warren, the county seat, was named the capital of Trumbull County and served as the political and economic center for the Connecticut Western Reserve.

In the years following the American Revolution, many states absolved land claims that they had held since colonial times. Historically, Connecticut owned the land the length of itself “to the sea.� After the Revolution, the state gave up their claim to the sea, but kept a piece of land the same size as itself, 120 miles long west of the Pennsylvania border. This land, known as the Western Reserve, would be sold to the Connecticut Land Company and settled primarily by the families and friends of 35 wealthy investors from Connecticut families.

Over the years, parcels of land were sold off and Trumbull County was further broken down into additional counties, cities and villages, but many of the original families kept hold of the political, economic and social culture of the area. The New England roots of Trumbull County would eventually give way to a new populous as manufacturing and steel became an economic powerhouse in the Mahoning Valley. From its position as an Underground Railroad center to leading the charge in woman suffrage, developing the automobile industry to rivaling world-wide records in steel production, Trumbull County has left its mark on our national identity.

FACES: • Levi and Milton Sutliff: Two of Trumbull County’s prominent men joined forces with national antislavery leaders to form the American Milton Anti-Slavery Society Sutliff in Philadelphia in 1833.

Levi Sutliff was an operator on the Underground Railroad along with his wife, Phebe. Levi was known for his columns in anti-slavery newspapers vilifying the evils of human slavery. His brother, Milton, acted as a spokesperson for anti-slavery efforts, touring Ohio and delivering fiery speeches to promote anti-slavery activity.

• William McKinley: William McKinley, 25th President of the United States, was born in Niles in 1843. He served as governor of Ohio and a U.S. senator before being elected President in 1896.

McKinley’s parents, William and Nancy McKinley, were both from Pennsylvania families and had moved to Ohio by the early nineteenth century. William McKinley, Sr. operated iron works throughout the state. Iron foundries drew a steady stream of workers to Niles for more than forty years.

• The Packard Brothers: Brothers J.W. and W.D. Packard first produced the Packard automobile out of Packard Electric’s 1899 Packard New York and Ohio lamp plant in Warren, Ohio.

Exhibited at the 1900 first National Automobile Show in New York City, two of the cars were purchased by William Rockefeller.

• Alaska Packard: The sister of J.W. and W.D. Packard, Alaska was the first female special agent in the FBI in 1922. After J. Edgar Hoover became the Director of the Bureau in 1924, he stated there was “no particular work for a woman agent,” after which Packard resigned her post. There were no female agents from 1929 to 1972.

• Harriet Taylor Upton: In 1903, with the help of local suffragette Harriet Taylor Upton, the National American Woman Suffrage Association relocated to Warren, where it would be housed for six years.

Headquartered in Upton’s home, the Packard Mansion, and later in the Trumbull County Courthouse, the association was active across the county to promote voting rights for women.

• Ernie Hall: Ernie Hall made his first heavier-than-air plane in 1911. Hall, who would go on to work with the Wright Brothers after meeting them in 1912, had a passion for flying and spent his career developing airplane designs and training pilots. In 1915, he opened a flight school in Conneaut, Pennsylvania, and trained pilots in both World War I and World War II. • Kenneth Patchin: Patchin became a world renowned poet, novelist and artist.

He wrote primarily in the form of “jazz poetry,” rivaling Langston Hughes’ style.

A devout pacifist, Patchin was known for exemplifying the generation “born in one war and doomed to die in another.”

• Thomas Addison Millar: Painter Addison Thomas Millar was born in Bazetta, Ohio, in 1860. Known for his landscapes and plein air paintings, Millar started his career as a portrait painter in Trumbull County. Today, his work is collected by the Smithsonian, New York Public Library, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown.

• Carrie Green Mountain was the first African American woman in Warren to own property. She was born a slave, but arrived in Warren during the Great Migration to serve as a domestic. She spent many years with the Packard Family. When she passed away, she was considered a wealthy woman of her time.

She bequeathed funds that support the Salvation Army to this day.

PLACES: • Trumbull County Courthouse: The current Romanesque building is Trumbull County’s third courthouse. After the second was destroyed by fire in 1895, the firm of LaBelle and French were selected as the architects to design a building that would highlight Warren’s town square.

The building was completed and dedicated two years later in 1897.

• Warren’s City Hall: Warren’s Italianate City Hall was built in 1871 for Henry Bishop Perkins. The son of Simon Perkins, Henry Bishop held court over Millionaire’s Row families, director of the Cleveland and Mahoning Railroad, as well as the director of the Western Reserve Bank. In 1861, Salmon Chase, then Secretary of the Treasury, asked Henry Perkins for the first national loan during the Civil War. • The Clarence Darrow Octogan House in Kinsman, Ohio, was built In 1864.

Lawyer Clarence Darrow was 7 years old when his family moved here while maintaining a furniture shop next door.

Darrow became nationally known as a trial attorney for his involvement in the Scopes “Monkey” Trial.

• John Stark Edwards House: The Edwards House is Warren’s oldest remaining home. Built in 1807, it was constructed by John Stark Edwards.

Edwards was the grandson of fire and brimstone preacher Jonathan Edwards, and a first cousin of Aaron Burr. The Edwards House still survives as the home to the Trumbull County Historical Society, and is open for public tours.

• Harriet Taylor Upton House: The Upton House was the birthplace of Harriet Taylor Upton, suffragette and local social activist. Built in 1840, the home Packard Mansion served for a time as the headquarters of the National Woman Suffrage Association and as Harriet’s home for much of her life.

• The Kinsman House: The Kinsman House was built by Warren pioneer and land agent Simon Perkins as a wedding present for his daughter, Olive Perkins Kinsman. Designed and built in 1832 by Isaac Ladd, Olive and her husband Frederick Kinsman made this federal-style dwelling their home until Olive’s untimely death in 1838. Today, it is operated by the Warren Heritage Center and is open for public tours.

• Newton Falls Covered Bridge: Built in 1831, this bridge is the second oldest covered bridge in Ohio and the only one that remains with a covered pedestrian walkway.

FAST FACTS: • An estimated 5,254 men who served in regiments from Trumbull County gave their lives during the Civil War. The local training camp, Camp Hutchins, was located on the spot where Warren G. Harding High School currently stands.

• In 1909, Warren became the first city in the United States to have tungsten electric street lamps. They were produced and installed by Packard Electric, one of 15 lamp companies operating in Warren in 1910.

• By 1924, the Ku Klux Klan had a large following throughout the United States. In that year, they held a parade through the city of Niles with plans of having additional marches. As a counter to Klan activities, the Knights of the Flaming Circle held a counter-march. Before the march occurred, the mayor’s house in Niles was bombed. The situation escalated to a point where there was an 18-hour riot followed by 10 days of martial law.

• In 1937, workers at Republic Steel and Youngstown Sheet and Tube went on strike to protest low wages and poor working conditions. One of the most wellknown strikes of its day, the protest pitted union workers not only against their

employers, but also citizens groups that arose to combat the strike. Governor Martin L. Davey eventually sent in troops to break up the strike. It was not until 1941 that the companies within Little Steel recognized and began negotiations with unions.

• Warren’s first manufacturing plant was Benjamin Stevens’ Cloth Mill, established 1817. This factory converted wool into cloth. The original building burned down in 1826 and the business was moved to a brick building further down river.

• In 1870, Trumbull County was the largest coal producing county in Ohio.

The mines in Trumbull County were located in the following townships: Weathersfield, Hubbard, Liberty, Brookfield and Vienna. Mahoning County in Ohio, along with Mercer and Lawrence Counties in Pennsylvania were also major producers of coal.

• Constructed in 1835 and open in 1840, the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal claimed 149 registered boats by 1843. The canal opened trade to Warren and helped create the city as a regional economic center.

• Clock manufacturing was one of Trumbull County’s first industries.

Between 1820 and 1835, Hartford, Vienna and Warren produced between 70,000 to 100,000 wooden clock works for consumption nation-wide.

• Built in 1921, the “Trumbull Clifts” blast furnace was the largest in the world at the time. It was owned by Trumbull-Cliffs Furnace Company and designed specifically for efficiency.

egional history is an important aspect of American history. Every little town has something to contribute to the way events may have unfolded on a national level. The Images of America series chronicles the uniqueness of American small towns. Written by local experts and containing many images and memories from local residents, these titles can provide new insight into the history and culture of your hometown. This series includes thousands of titles about small towns throughout the country as well as popular points of interest. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County owns books on local towns in Ohio, such as Poland, Campbell, Struthers and Austintown just to name a few. Some Pennsylvania reads include Farrell, Zelienople and African Americans in Mercer County. You can also find more specific titles such as Pennsylvania’s Covered Bridges, Historic Theaters of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, Kennywood, Lake Erie’s Shores and Islands and Along the Appalachian Trail. This list is just a sampling of the many books that are part of the Images of America book series. Youngstown | By Donna DeBlasio | Youngstown was founded in 1796 and became known for its steel making industry. This industry influenced buildings, people and the aesthetic of the whole area. It was the “lifeblood” of the city. This title contains many pictures of Youngstown and descriptions of the steel industry and its impact on the valley.

Historic Mill Creek Park | By Carol Potter | Mill Creek Park was Ohio’s first park district founded in 1891. Volney Rogers felt a park would make the community a better place for families.

There are many trails, drives, lakes, activities and beautiful views that one can enjoy to this day.

Squire’s Warren Junior Military Band | By Janne HurrelbrinkBias | This band formed was formed in 1927 with Donald W. “Squire” Hurrelbrink becoming the director in 1930. The band traveled across the country and abroad and won many awards.

The Squire directed this band for 66 years. Alumni led the band for 14 more years until it ended in 2010. It was one or our areas greatest assets.

Geauga Lake: The Funtime Years 1969-1995 | By Jim Futrell | Three co-workers from Cedar Point purchased the aging Geauga Lake Amusement Park in 1968 and updated it to a modern, competitive, fun place to go. This book highlights the transformation and many images of the place where families made memories over 26 years.

Three more titles illustrate the strong influence that immigrants had on our area: Italian Americans of the Greater Mahoning Valley, Slovaks of the Greater Mahoning Valley and Irish in Youngstown and the Greater Mahoning Valley. All three books describe how the Mahoning Valley was a place for immigrants to flee to escape poverty in Europe. Jobs were plentiful in the steel and iron industries as well as in the building and trade fields. People could thrive here while living the American Dream. Many of the Italians, Slovaks and Irish that emigrated here and their descendants became vital members of our valley. n Greek, Philadelphia Candies means “candies made with brotherly love” — and with 99 years and counting in the business, the Hermitage candy company has been a staple to chocolate lovers throughout the country.

To find out how sweet it is, I took a trip to the Hermitage factory and retail store to learn the ins and outs of one of the tastiest jobs around — a day in the life of a chocolatier!

John Macris, head of business development at Philadelphia Candies and grandson to one of the founding Macris brothers, is happy to be a part of the family’s business that has been rooted in the valley for nearly a century. “Local is really important,” John said. “This area has always pushed manufacturing. In fact, Pennsylvania makes up 60-percent of the chocolate industry and much of that is made up of small, local businesses.”

Founded in 1919 in the Shenango Valley, local is just what Philadelphia Candies is all about. With a dedication to using quality ingredients and supporting other small businesses, the company has built brand loyalty due to the standard that is upheld in their products, John said. One example can be seen through its newest product in fundraising — a pretzel chocolate bar, which is filled with crunchy, salty pretzels from a local Pennsylvania vendor.

Philadelphia Candies offers more than 100 confections, from novelties to boxed chocolates. The neatest part is that it is all handmade in the factory behind the Hermitage retail location! So, without hesitation, I was ready to learn about candy making. During my trip, the factory was preparing confections for one its most popular holidays, Easter. Solid bunnies, filled eggs, foiled chocolates and more … hundreds of pounds of chocolate are used daily in preparation for the spring. It is a true sight to see (and smell!).

I started with head candy maker, Mike, who has been with Philadelphia Candies for 35 years. Having just finished making marshmallows, raspberry creams were next on the list. Starting in a cream beater, the candy maker prepared the base before cooking it in a high-power cooker. After, the base made its way to a cooling tray, where it cooled before a raspberry purée was added. The base swirled beautiful white and pink as it mixed, turing into 150-pounds of raspberry cream. Then, Mike portioned out the cream and ran it

through a crank that produced centers ready to be cloaked in chocolate.

Next, Andrew and Dave worked in tandem, rolling coconut centers for chocolate eggs. “Our eggs are unique in that all of our eggs’ centers are handmade here in our factory with the freshest ingredients. We make our own fondant centers, use fresh coconuts and shred them to mix with fondant for eggs,” John said.

As the duo rolled dozens of the coconut delights, I asked what their favorite chocolates are. “It’s all good!”

Dave said, while Andrew’s selection changes day-to-day. “It depends on what we’re making for the day,” he said.

Next, I met with Deborah, the decorator. Deborah uses her piping skills

to prepare chocolate baskets, decorated heeled shoes and more. She was adding the final details to 20-ounce bunnies after finishing smash eggs; chocolate eggs filled with jelly beans, foiled eggs and mini pretzels. “Kids get a wooden mallet and can smash into the egg to get the other treats,” she said.

Across the way, Mildred showed me how chocolates are packaged, from bagging to sealing, labeling and even the preparation for chocolates and candies to be shipped anywhere in the United States!

Jen and Ruth filled various candy molds — bunnies, carrots, ballerinas and more — at the novelty station. Equipped with a 500-pound drum of milk chocolate, the ladies make hundreds of chocolates on a stick daily. “That’s what is fun about

Jack, who heads up the line, fills the customs molds with sugar-free, dark, milk or bittersweet chocolate. “We make tens of thousands of bunnies every year and have many different style molds.

Everyone has a favorite [mold],” John said.

Next, I made my way to the dipping room, which houses two belts responsible for enrobing all of Philadelphia Candies’ tasty treats with luscious chocolate. A dark chocolate and milk chocolate belt take cookies, pretzels, chips, creams and more on a trip through a chocolate bottomer then a cascade of chocolate before being decorated with a signature drizzle.

After the factory, it was time to see the products in their final stage at the retail store! I was greeted by Marianne, Halona and Lindsay. “It’s always busy in here, whether we are working with customers or just on the floor,” Marianne said. “We prepare custom orders, design window displays and make baskets. Those are fun because we get to pick and choose what goes into them.”

Aside from working around chocolate daily, the trio had many reasons to why they enjoy their jobs. “It always smells so good!” Halona said. “It’s also so clean and bright. It’s easy to come into work every day.”

“Visiting with longtime regular customers and my co-workers is the best part of my job,” Marianne said. “Plus, it’s a nice atmosphere. It’s so pretty in here … and there is chocolate.”

hen a restaurant has been in business for 100 years, it gets my attention. The Saratoga Restaurant and Catering in Warren, Ohio, has also been owned and operated by the same family for more than 80 of those years. I’m now more than intrigued.

When planning to eat at The Saratoga, go for the food but also be prepared to surround yourself in the history and charm of old family photos, period sconces and mirrors, leather-back booths and metal stools. Founded in downtown

Warren in 1916, brothers Harry and Nick Economos purchased the restaurant in 1935. Harry’s son, Jim Economos, joined the family business in 1960. In 1988, Eric and Chrisi Economos, Jim’s son and daughter, became partners. As Chrisi says, “It’s all I’ve ever known.” If you are lucky to have her cook for you, you are in for a real treat.

Serving up more than delicious food, it delivers friendly service in a unique setting that seems to have stopped time.

With much of its décor from the 1930s,

guests are taken back to an era when dining was an intimate occasion and people who ate in restaurants wanted to be discreet about their fondness for liquor.

golden grilled, seasoned chicken with choice of dressing, but our delightful server, who has been with the restaurant for 10 years, recommended sweet and sour for the beet salad and raspberry vinaigrette for the pear salad. Once again — perfection. Because I already had a main dish, my clever plan was to take most of my salad to-go for lunch the next day.

The regular menu offers a generous selection of sandwiches, burgers, salads, items from the sea and land, daily soups and desserts. Something fun on the menu is the “Secretaries Special,” which is a hamburger for the lighter appetite. It made me smile a little to find it on a modern-day menu, but considering the venue, it fits.

Then, as always, there is my favorite part of any meal: dessert. With everything homemade at The Saratoga, I just knew the warm, creamy rice pudding would be worth the calories. I wasn’t wrong. There also was a chocolate mousse pie. So much chocolate. Mark my words, dessert will be the end of me.

For all its great food and service, The Saratoga is probably best known for its catering, often fielding four functions in one day. Its motto, “An Affair to Remember,” is reminiscent of the 1957 melodrama by the same name. Because of the busy catering side of the business, the restaurant is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Saratoga Catering offers a fullscale menu and limited bar for “two to 2,000” and is already booked for the remainder of this year, so get your reservations in now for 2019.

During our too brief visit, it was more what we observed from behind our booth that made our experience so special. Each guest who came through the door was welcomed by name and even joined at their table by the staff for a chat. I believe that when I return, they will know my name, too. Carolina Shrimp and Grits

CONTRIBUTED

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup coarse grits 3 cups milk 2 cups half-and-half 2 pounds uncooked shrimp 1 lemon, juiced 1 pound andouille sausage 1 pinch cayenne pepper 5 slices bacon 1 green pepper, chopped 1 red pepper, chopped 1 cup chopped Spanish onion 1 teaspoon minced garlic ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 cup chicken broth 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese DIRECTIONS: Bring milk, grits and salt to boil in a heavy saucepan with a lid. Stir in half-and-half and simmer until grits are thickened and tender; 15 to 20 minutes. Set aside and keep warm.

Sprinkle shrimp with salt and cayenne pepper. Drizzle with lemon juice. Set aside in a bowl.

Place andouille sausage slices in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry until browned; about eight minutes.

Remove skillet from heat.

Cook bacon in a large skilled over medium-high heat, turning occasionally until evenly browned; about 10 minutes. Retain bacon 70

drippings in skillet. Transfer bacon slices to paper towels and let cool.

Crumble.

Cook green and red peppers, onion and garlic in bacon drippings until onion is translucent; about five minutes.

Stir shrimp and cooked vegetables into andouille sausage and mix to combine.

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat; stir in flour to make a smooth paste. Turn heat to low and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture is medium brown in color.

Watch carefully — mixture burns

easily. Cook until it is about the color of peanut butter.

Pour the butter-flour mixture into the skillet with the sausage, shrimp and vegetables. Place the skillet over medium heat and pour in chicken broth, bacon crumbles and Worcestershire sauce. Cook and stir until sauce thickens and shrimp become opaque and bright pink; about eight minutes.

Just before serving, mix sharp cheddar cheese into grits until melted and grits are creamy and light yellow. Serve shrimp mixture over cheese grits.

French Farmhouse Vegetable Soup INGREDIENTS: 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups chopped onion 2 cups chopped leeks 3 cups 1-inch diced, unpeeled boiling potatoes 3 cups 1-inch diced carrots 1½ tablespoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 3 quarts homemade chicken stock 1 teaspoon saffron threads ½ pound haricots verts (petite green beans), cut into ½-inch pieces 1 cup Pistou (recipe to follow) Freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano for serving DIRECTIONS: Heat olive oil in a large stockpot; add onions. Sauté over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes or until they are translucent.

Add potatoes, leeks, carrots, salt and pepper and cook for another eight minutes. Add chicken stock and saffron.

Bring to a low boil then simmer, uncovered, for 30 to 35 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add haricots verts and cook for an additional eight minutes.

To serve, whisk ¼ cup of pistou into the hot soup, then season to taste. Serve with grated cheese.

PISTOU: 4 large garlic cloves ¼ cup crushed tomatoes 24 basil leaves ½ cup fresh Parmesan ½ cup olive oil

Place the garlic, crushed tomatoes, basil and Parmesan in the bowl of a food processor and purée. With the motor running, slowly pour in the olive oil to make a paste. Pack into a container and pour a film of olive oil on top. Close lid.

Popovers INGREDIENTS: ½ stick butter, melted 6 eggs, beaten 2 cups milk 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 450-degrees. Using two tablespoons of melted butter, coat muffin tin.

Whisk or blend eggs, milk and two tablespoons of melted butter.

Blend flour and salt. Whisk with egg mixture until smooth.

Fill cups half-full. Bake 20 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 325-degrees. Bake for 15 minutes more.
