HANOI – PERFUME PAGODA The Perfume Pagoda is one of the highlights of the Hanoi area and one of the most important religious sites for Vietnamese Buddhists, and an annual visit up here in springtime is a must to many believers. Located on the limestone rocks of Huong Son Mountain in beautiful and mystical surroundings, the pagodas are 70 km or twohour driving out of Hanoi. Unlike other temples in Vietnam, the only way to reach this sanctuary is boating along a narrow but extremely poetic stream by rowing boats that takes 45 minutes. An iron boat can carry 35 people and a large wooden boat up to 20 locals. The stream is edged by rice, grass, small paths, and temples here and there.

Departing Hanoi at 08.00 we have a two hour drive through the picturesque countryside and back roads to the village of Duc for some refreshments before boarding our boats for a 1.5 hour ride along the scenic Yen river, surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs. After this we walk to the Thien Tru Pagoda (Heaven's Kitchen) and the Perfume Cave and Pagoda – approximately an hour walk. On our way back we visit Giai Oan and Tuyet Son Pagodas. Lunch will be at one of the little food stalls near Thien Tru Pagoda. After lunch the boat will take us back to our bus for the drive back to Hanoi. We arrive in Hanoi around 18.00 pm. HANOI OLD HANDICRAFT VILLAGES DAY TRIP

Day 9

HANOI

Phu Lang craft village is situated at the poetic Cau River. It impresses tourists with its simplicity. Among dozens of craft villages in the Cau River area, the cradle of the Red River civilization, Phu Lang is well known with many ceramic artisans. The renowned craftsmen of Dai Bai bronze craft village only remain in a very small number. It has been extremely difficult for them to maintain this traditional occupation as the rhythm of the modern living drum has reverberated through the village, causing many social difficulties for a community once rich in cultural tradition. We depart from Hanoi at 8 am and drive to Phu Lang pottery village (50 km away from Hanoi), located in Phu Lang Commune, Que Vo District, Bac Ninh Province. Many tourists like traveling to the village because they have a chance to make ceramics themselves. Clay, the materials used to make ceramics, is bought from other places and transported to the village by boat. Tourists can stay at villagers’ homes to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, see the ceramic kilns mushrooming along the dykes or on the low hills near Luc Dau Giang, facing the Cau River, which runs all the year round. Have lunch. Continue to visit Dai Bai Village it is famous for long aged handicraft village. This point itself creates distinctiveness for this village, is the wellknown village of forging brass. Come back to Hanoi.
