UIC returns seven letterwinners this season, led by a pair of starters in senior guard Toby Okani (11.0 ppg., 7.1 rpg., 2.3 apg.) and junior forward Filip Skobalj (7.7 ppg., teamhigh 61 three-pointers). Okani scored in double figures a career-high 18 times last year, highlighted by a career-best 29 points at Valparaiso. Rounding out the contingent of returnees for the Flames is senior guard Griffin Yaklich (0.9 ppg.), who appeared in a career-high 16 games last season and lends veteran leadership to the 2023-24 UIC roster.

Sixth Man of the Year (2020) and was a two-time member of the MVC All-Bench Team (2020, 2021). As one of the Ramblers’ top backcourt options, Kennedy averaged 8.0 points per game during his career in Rogers Park, including a career-high 26 points against crosstown foe DePaul last December. Sophomore guard Drew King was one of the nation’s top rookies last year during his lone season at Houston Christian. He appeared in 28 games for the Huskies (starting 17 times after early December), scoring in double digits 13 times, including an early-season road matchup at Missouri. Some of the other incoming transfers this season include junior guard Yusef Salih (Idaho), as well as junior guard Ethan Pickett (Triton College/Northwest Mississippi Junior College) and sophomore guard Ethyn Brown (Southwestern Illinois). They will be joined by a trio of incoming freshmen. Nathan Ojukwu is a 6-6 forward from Boise Idaho, who comes to UIC following a successful prep season at DME Academy in Florida. Two other 6-foot-3 guards will suit up for the Flames as well — Chicagoland native Khaled Khaled and Moline, Ill., resident Grant Welch. UIC will tackle a rigorous schedule this season that tips off Nov. 6 with a road trip to Cincinnati, followed by the home opener four days later against Little Rock at Credit Union 1 Arena and then a trip to Loyola on Nov. 14. The highlight of the Flames’ non-conference schedule comes over Thanksgiving, when they head to the Bahamas for the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship, which tips off Nov. 24 with a matchup against Middle Tennessee.

The Flames will also have several new faces donning the Fire Engine Red and Navy Pier Blue this season, highlighted by six transfers. The challenging 20-game MVC schedule begins Nov. 30 with a home game against Illinois State and picks up in earnest after Senior guard Isaiah Rivera appeared in 92 games during Christmas. No stranger to the state of Illinois and the Chi-

cagoland area, Luke Yaklich (YOCK-litch) was named head men’s basketball coach for the UIC Flames by Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Michael Lipitz on March 26, 2020. The 43-year-old Yaklich brings 21 years of coaching experience to Chicago and he has helped lead three collegiate programs – Texas, Michigan and Illinois State – to national postseason success. During his third year in Chicago, Yaklich helped lead the Flames through their first season in the Missouri Valley Conference, including their first-ever MVC win over his alma mater Illinois State on Dec. 28, 2022 by a final score of 55-51. UIC entered its first-ever Arch Madness as an 11-seed, and lost a hard-fought first round game to sixth-seeded Missouri State to end the 202223 campaign. In his second season with the Flames in 202122, Yaklich mentored freshman Jace Carter to the League’s All-Newcomer Team, the first

The Wolverines ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense (63.3 ppg) in his first season on the bench (2017-18) and advanced all the way to the NCAA Championship game against Villanova. It was the first time a Michigan team led the Big Ten in scoring defense since 1963-64. It also ranked third nationally that year in Defensive Efficiency by the KenPom ratings (90.5).

Yaklich also coached at his high school alma mater, LaSalle-Peru High School, from 2003-07 (boys) and 1999-2000 (girls). In between, he was the head boys basketball coach at Sterling High School in Sterling, Ill., from 2000-03. Yaklich’s teams won 214 games in his 14 seasons as head coach.

A native of LaSalle, Ill., Yaklich is a 1994 graduate of La Salle-Peru Township High School, where he played basketball for the Cavaliers. Ashleen Bracey enters her second season as

the head women’s basketball coach for the UIC Flames going into the 2023-24 season. Bracey had a memorable first season back home in Chicago, leading the Flames to a 19win season, a postseason appearance and a tie for the second-most wins by a head coach in school history. The Flames began the 2022-23 season going 8-1, accumulating more wins then they had over the past three seasons combined. They tied the 1976-77 and the 2013-14 teams for the best start over a nine game span. After being projected to place 12th in UIC’s inaugural season in the Missouri Valley Conference, Bracey and her coaching staff led the Flames to a 10-12 record against conference opponents, and a sixth place seed in the 2023 MVC Women’s Basketball Championship at Hoops in the Heartland in Moline, Illinois.

The Flames faced off against the No 11. Valparaiso in the opening round, where they came away with the victory, 72-47. This was the first conference tournament win for UIC since the 2016-17 season. UIC’s play in the conference garnered a postseason bid for Bracey and her staff at the Women’s Basketball Invitational. This was only the third postseason appearance by the Flames, and their second time in the WBI. They finished the threeday tournament in Lexington, Kentucky with a 1-2 record. A native of nearby Oak Park, Ill., and former standout student-athlete at Illinois State University, Bracey arrived at UIC in March 2022 after spending the past six seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri, a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) at. During her tenure at Mizzou working alongside head coach Robin Pingeton, Bracey was instrumental in helping the Tigers reach three NCAA Tournaments and make two WNIT appearances. Bracey played a pivotal role in Missouri’s recruiting efforts during her time in Columbia. Of note, she led efforts to sign the nation’s 12th-ranked recruiting class in 2019, regarded as the best in program history. The group included Aijha Blackwell, the top prospect in the state of Missouri and No. 9 in the country, as ranked by espnW. The Flames head coach mentored seven All-SEC players and three All-SEC Freshman Team standouts while at Mizzou. In addition to Blackwell, All-Conference honorees coached by Bracey also include three-time All-SEC First Team selection Sophie Cunningham, the 13th overall pick in the 2019 WNBA draft by the Phoenix Mercury. Mizzou won at least 20 games three times in Bracey’s six seasons, including 24 victories in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns. The Tigers won 18 games in 2021-22, including an overtime thriller against No. 1 South Carolina and a road win at No. 15 Florida to close out the regular season. Bracey was responsible for developing and administering the game plan and scouting reports for both MU triumphs.

The 34-year-old Bracey cut her coaching teeth at several stops prior to arriving at Mizzou. From 2012-15, she served as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at UAB. She also spent time on staffs at Ball State University and Eureka College. As a student-athlete, Bracey starred on the hardwood at Illinois State from 2006-10. She was a three-year starter for Pingeton and the Redbirds and was a key contributor on three Missouri Valley Conference championship squads. During her time at ISU, Bracey and her teammates reached the postseason each year, qualifying for the 2008 NCAA Tournament and making three appearances in the WNIT, reaching the semifinals in 2009 and 2010. As a senior in 2009-10, Bracey served as team captain and earned All-MVC First Team honors, as well as a spot on the conference’s All-Defensive Team. She was selected MVC Player of the Week four times during that campaign and earned recognition on the 2009-10 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team. She tallied 1,194 points as a Redbird, and shot over 50% from the floor for her career. Her 765 career rebounds tie her for fifth most in program history. Bracey tallied 21 double-doubles in her Redbird career. Upon graduating from Illinois State in 2010 with a degree in Criminal Justice Sciences, Bracey played professional basketball in Greece for one year prior to transitioning to the sideline as a coach. Bracey attended Oak Park-River Forest High School, where she was a three-time All-West Suburban Conference honoree for the Huskies. Her brothers also played college basketball, Bryan (Oregon) and Chris (West Texas A&M), and went on to professional careers in Europe.

Through his first four years at the helm, Lipitz has led the Flames to historic results in the classroom, in competition, and in the community. He also spearheaded UIC’s move to the Missouri Valley Conference with the 2022-23 academic year. The Flames have posted the best academic results in school history in recent years, recording a cumulative 3.4 GPA for the 2022-23 academic year, and an all-time high 93% Graduation Rate in Fall 2022. UIC captured its first-ever Horizon League Women’s All-Sport Trophy in 2021, as measured by team finishes in the regular season and championships. The Flames won three Horizon League Championships in softball, women’s tennis, and volleyball, along with three individual titles in women’s diving, men’s diving, and men’s cross country. In addition, Lena Kurz of women’s soccer won the 2021 Senior CLASS Award recognizing the nation’s best all-around senior, the first UIC studentathlete in any sport to be so honored. Athletics has set fundraising records as well, with Giving Tuesday 2021 achieving record donor participation, after raising the most dollars in program history in 2020. UIC also received its third largest endowed scholarship gift in program history. Athletics recently relaunched its annual giving program, the Flames Athletics Fund, to incentivize annual giving and better reward current and future donors, and created Sparky’s Kids Club for its youngest Flames.

Student-athlete health and wellness are a focus for Flames Athletics under Lipitz’s leadership. In fall 2020, the department launched the Flames Leadership Institute to provide comprehensive programming in leadership, career development, personal development, equity and inclusion, and service to the campus and Chicago communities. In spring 2021, UIC Athletics developed the Flames Unite initiative as an umbrella for its DEI efforts and resources. The department also invested in a multi-year partnership with Millennium Counseling and an on-campus partnership with the Jane Addams College of Social Work that have significantly expanded student-athlete access to mental wellness resources. UIC is enhancing its athletics facilities, too. The Flames Athletic Center basketball practice facility and men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms have been renovated, while enhanced branding has been installed throughout athletics facilities following the department’s comprehensive refresh of its athletics brand. UIC opened Chicago’s premier collegiate soccer venue in fall 2022 following a $5M renovation of Flames Field. Presently, the Flames are pursuing a comprehensive student-athlete performance center to enhance student-athlete resources in athletic medicine, sports performance, nutrition, mental wellness, and related health and wellness services. Lipitz serves in leadership roles on UIC’s campus and nationally. He is a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet at UIC and serves as Chair of the MVC Council of Athletic Directors. He also serves on the league’s Finance Committee, Long-Range Planning Committee, and Sports Medicine Committee. During the 2021-22 academic year, he was one of 10 athletic directors nationally on the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee. In 2022-23, he began his term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Competition Committee. The Missouri Valley Conference -- the nation’s second-oldest NCAA Division I conference -- continues

to be a leader in college athletics and is one of the nation’s most progressive conferences, celebrating its 117th season in 2023-24. The Valley brand remains very strong, both regionally and nationally, and the great athletic tradition of the Conference remains a compelling force in recruiting student-athletes and in marketing all the MVC programs. League members have worked together to focus on common goals and objectives, placing a high value on league harmony, while continuing to invest in athletic programs to compete at the highest level. In 2022-23, for the first time, the MVC had 12 members as Belmont, UIC, and Murray State officially joined the Conference on July 1, 2022. It marked the first time the Conference has admitted three schools for the same season. During the 2022-23 season the Conference celebrated the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX -- a federal civil rights law passed in 1972 that protects opportunities for women. Pioneers from the MVC’smember institutions were instrumental on their campuses, and they continue to shape the landscape today. Men’s basketball continues to be the engine that drives Valley athletic programs as three MVC teams competed in postseason play last year. The league has now combined for 20 wins in the NCAA Tournament in the past 10 NCAA championships and has earned multiple bids 16 times since 1994. The State Farm MVC Men’s Basketball Championship -- affectionately known as Arch Madness -- continues to be a spectacular showcase for the league. The tournament will celebrate its 48th anniversary overall in 2024, observe its 30th anniversary at Enterprise Center, and it will be the 34th-straight season the event has been held in St. Louis. Only the Big East Conference (in New York City) has had a longer continuous run at a single site. In women’s basketball, The Valley sent a total of six teams to the postseason in 2023, including UIC who competed in the 2023 Women’s Basketball Invitational. The MVC has seen an average of four league teams participate in postseason play in the last 24 seasons. The Conference remains committed to keeping the women’s basketball tournament at a neutral site. The women’s tournament tagged “Hoops in the Heartland,” will compete in Moline, Ill., for the ninth year in a row, marking the 17th-straight season held at a neutral site. The Valley is the only Division I standalone women’s basketball event to be held in the same city eight or more consecutive years.

The Flames Athletic Fund is the official fundraising arm for our 300 student-athletes across 18 sports, providing critical resources for the UIC Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to operate and extend a holisitc student-athlete experience. While unrestricted philanthropic gifts to the Flames Athletic Fund are the most impactful on an annucal basis due to the flexibility, they provide the department and its leadership, gifts can also be made directly to a specific sport or the general scholarship fund. All gifts are used to enhance the student-athlete expereince by enhancing 5 major initiatives for Intercollegiate Athletics:

- Making a tax deductible donation to the FAF General Unrestricted account or one of our Restricted Sports Programs

When you donate to the FAF, your contribution supports everything a student-athlete needs to be a successful as a flame. More than 60% of the cost is an investment in scholarships that includes tuition, room, and board. Each scholarship also helps to cover travel costs, strength & conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, and the F.L.A.M.E.S. Leadership institute. These opportunities would not be possible without fans like you helping build the team behind the team. Becoming a member of the FAF is easy, and there are a variety of options available to match your passions and interests.

-Naming Rights in our Athletic Facilities

- Premium seating membership at Men’s or Women’s Basketball games. - Be a men’s or Women’s Basketball season ticket holder - Gift-In-Kind Donations

Regardless of the size, every gift makes a difference and will allow our student-athletes to compete DAY ONE in the Missouri Valley Conference. Whether you are a longtime supporter or a new member of Flame Nation, you are an integral part of the currect and future success of Flames Athletics. We are excited to see you at the field, stadium, and arena. Go Flames!
