Dear Big West Basketball Fans,
Welcome to Henderson and the 2025 Big West Basketball Championships, presented by Credit Union 1! We are thrilled to return to Lee’s Family Forum for a fourth year and excited for another unforgettable week of Big West women’s and men’s basketball.
Over the next four days, we’ll cap off one of the most successful seasons in decades by crowning two champions who will proudly represent The Big West in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships starting next week.
We are especially delighted to welcome UC San Diego’s men’s and women’s programs to this event after completing their four-year transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. Their patience and success throughout this NCAAmandated journey has been remarkable, and their presence adds to the strength and depth of Big West basketball. Our goal is to make this week a positive and memorable experience for our student-athletes and fans alike. Your attendance, enthusiasm, and support mean the world to us as we write the next chapter in the history of Big West basketball.
As you may know, our conference membership will evolve in the years ahead, but our mission remains steadfast: to empower our student-athletes in competition and in life and to unite our community through championship experiences. With 21 sponsored sports and 11 championships taking place over just eight weeks this spring, there are plenty of opportunities to experience the spirit of The Big West.
Since I became Commissioner in 2020, the only constant has been change. Intercollegiate athletics continues to evolve in every facet, particularly at the NCAA Division I level, from expanding student-athlete opportunities to shifts in conference membership. Through it all, The Big West remains committed to bold action and to upholding excellence in athletics, academics, and leadership in our communities.
We are grateful for the continued support of our partners at Hercules Tires, Credit Union 1, bdGlobal, the Foley Entertainment Group, and the City of Henderson in making this a first-class event. Our dedicated staff and an incredible team of volunteers have worked tirelessly to create an unforgettable championship experience, and their efforts are deeply appreciated.
To the student-athletes who leave it all on the court in pursuit of The Big West’s ultimate prize, we wish you the very best of success. We also extend our sincere thanks to our game officials for their dedication and professionalism in officiating these championships.
Finally, thank you for your unwavering support of Big West basketball, wherever you call home. We’re thrilled you’ve joined us here in Henderson to witness the next great moments in Big West basketball history.
Enjoy the games!
Dan Butterly Commissioner The Big West

We see that same spirit reflected in the athletes competing in the Big West Basketball Championships. Much like Hercules Tires, their strength comes from unity, teamwork, and the unwavering belief that success is earned through collective effort. We proudly rally under the mantra of Ride on Our Strength, but it is the perseverance and passion of these young men and women that truly inspire us.
We also recognize that none of this would be possible without the support of the passionate Big West community students, alumni, faculty, staff, and fans alike. You are the driving force behind every dunk, every assist, and every victory. Together, you help fuel the ambitions and dreams of these remarkable athletes.
As the 2025 Big West Basketball Championships unfold, we are excited to stand alongside you, as proud supporters of the pursuit of greatness. We look forward to celebrating the triumphs of this season and the incredible future ahead.

Securing the No. 1 seed, Hawai'i (22-8, 6-4 Big West) has showcased exceptional consistency throughout the season under the guidance of Big West Coach of the Year Laura Beeman. The Rainbow Wahine are propelled by Big West Player of the Year Lily Wahinekapu (Sr., G), who has been instrumental in their success, averaging 11.1 points, 2.4 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game. The senior leadership on the court is complemented by the emergence of Freshman of the Year Ritorya Tamilo (C), whose defensive prowess and rebounding have added depth to Hawai'i's lineup. The team boasts a scoring defense allowing just 55.9 points per game, reflecting their defensive tenacity.
No. 2 seed UC Irvine (21-9, 15-5 Big West) has been a formidable force, led by the dynamic backcourt duo of All-Big West first team selections Hunter Hernandez (Jr., G) and Déja Lee (Sr., G). Hernandez's scoring ability, averaging 13.0 points per game, combined with Lee's playmaking skills, has been pivotal for the Anteaters. Additionally, Best Sixth Player Summah Hanson has provided valuable contributions off the bench, enhancing the team's depth. UC Irvine's defense has been impressive, limiting opponents to a field goal percentage of 35.2%, making them a tough adversary.
No. 3 seed and 2024 runners-up UC Davis (19-11, 137 Big West) enters the conference postseason with a balanced attack, anchored by All-Big West first team guard Tova Sabel (Sr., G). Sabel's versatility and leadership have been crucial, while Second Team center Megan Norris (R-Jr., C) provides a strong presence in the paint. The Aggies are second in the conference in scoring offense, averaging 66.9 points per game, and have been efficient from beyond the arc with a three-point shooting 32.7 percent from distance, making them a potent offensive unit.
No. 4 seed UC San Diego (17-15, 13-7 Big West) has
made significant strides this season in their first year of Division I postseason eligibility, with Newcomer of the Year Sabrina Ma making an immediate impact. Ma's scoring and versatility have bolstered the Tritons' offense, while All-Big West First Team guard Sumayah Sugapong (So., G) has been a consistent contributor. As a collective, UCSD averages 11.7 steals per game, good for 13th in the country, with Sugapong (2.50/game), Parker Montgomery (2.13 per game) and Ma (1.91 per game) holding three of the top four lines in the conference rankings. UC San Diego's ability to adapt and compete makes them a team to watch in the Championship.
UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, UC Riverside, and Cal Poly Seek to Upset
The trio of UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State and UC Riverside finished the regular season knotted in a tie, with the Gauchos prevailing in the seeding tiebreaker.
No. 5 seed UCSB (18-12, 12-8 Big West) has demonstrated resilience and competitiveness, led by second team guard Alyssa Marin (5th Yr., G) and Best Hustle Player Skylar Burke (Jr., G). Marin's experience and scoring ability with 14.03 points per game, coupled
with Burke's relentless energy, have been instrumental for the Gauchos. The team excels in free throw shooting, connecting on a conference- and nationalbest 81.9 percent of their attempts, which could be a decisive factor in close games.
No. 6 seed Long Beach State (16-13, 12-8 Big West) relies on the experience of All-Big West First Team guard Savannah Tucker (Sr., G), whose scoring and leadership have been vital. The league’s leading rebounder Rachel Loobie (Gr., F) pulls down 8.71 rebounds per game to spearhead a lineup that paces
The Big West on the boards and ranks 11th in the nation with a 42.41 rebounding average. The Beach's defensive intensity and ability to force turnovers make them a challenging matchup for higher-seeded teams.
No. 7 seed UC Riverside (16-14, 12-8 Big West) is anchored by Best Defensive Player Makayla Rose (Jr., G), whose defensive skills have been a cornerstone for the Highlanders. Alongside second team guard Shelley Duchemin (Jr., G), UC Riverside aims to leverage their defensive strengths to make a Championship run.
No. 8 seed Cal Poly (13-17, 8-12 Big West), led by second team guard Annika Shah (Sr., G) and honorable mention selection Mary Carter, has shown flashes of brilliance this season. The Mustangs made the bracket on the final weekend of the regular season, upending Cal State Fullerton on the road to eliminate the Titans from contention and secure the eighth seed.
