How Ballarat Road School will be laid out w h e n completed.

The Principal's P a g e W E have again completed a very satisfactory year in the progress and development of this School. First of all we achieved the record enrolment of 3531, made up as follows: Day Diploma Students 146 Day Junior Students 954 Apprentices 1044 + 229 Evg. Trade Students.

Part Time Students 1 1 58 A t last the Education Department has accepted a tender for the erection of a Caretaker's Cottage on the roof of our Ballarat Road School, and approval has been given to enclose the property with a wire-mesh fence.

The transfer of the Welding Department to Ballarat Road has been carried out, and it is already demonstrating the practical advantages of having the Boilermaking, Steel Construction, and Welding Departments together as a unit. Most of the work was carried out by the Public Works Department, for the Education Department; and the School acted as contractor for one section of the work, which cost £1,500. This work was carried out under the supervision of Mr. Robertson, who must feel very proud of his handiwork.

Approval has been given by the Education Department to paint the Electrical Mechanics' Workshop internally and externally, and new equipment for this Department of the School is on order. The Metrology Room for Production Engineering has been constructed and equipment to the value of approximately £1,500 installed; and as a further improvement to the Senior Machine Shop a new Maintenance Workshop was provided.

Alterations were made to the Junior Machine Shop Storeroom, and a partition erected to provide single section rooms in place of the double rooms.

Plans for the allocation of the space vacated by the Wefding Department have been submitted to the Education Department. They provide for extension of the Moulding Department, Amenities for D i o h r n a and Apprentice Students, and a new section tor tne Pottery. Plans have also been submitted for new offices and store rooms tor the Senior Physics Section of the School.

A move is now being made in conjunction with the Footscray Technical School Old Boys' Football Club to erect a Gymnasium and Sports Pavilion at Ballarat Road adjacent to the Henry Turner Reserve but on school property.

We have not relaxed in our efforts ultimately to have all the buildings at Ballarat Road, especially the Assembly Hall which is so necessary for the Junior School students.

F a d e s

On looking up vital statistics on longevity of races and pe6ples, I f i n d that amongst those who enjoy the greatest are " t a l l lean Scotchmen" of sedentary habits. If this be true (which I inwardly hope may not be without exceptions as I myself am somewhat deficient in the necessary qualities) then our gentleman in question could well run past the average allotted span. This gentleman of course is our retiring Vice-Principal, Mr. Murray, or "George" as he is more affectionately known to past and present staff. Let us briefly trace his career from the time of his entering this School.

It was as long ago as March, 1920, that he elected to join the staff, and, like Johnnie Walker of 1820 vintage, is still going strong. Probably one of the most important events in his life occurred early in his association wtih the School, when he met and married Mrs. M u r r a y , who, at the time was also a member of the staff. His subsequent long and successful career is probably due in no small way to this combination. He continued to grow older and wiser under the mellowing influence of students at F.T.S., as head of the Mathematics department, until in December, 1946, he was appointed Vice-Principal in succession to Mr. Kepert, who was appointed to the principalship of Caulfield Technical School.

The work which this position entailed would have been enough for any one man to cope with, but those of us who were privileged to be on the staff, at this time, will recall that the sudden passing of M r . Hoadley, in February, 1947, left Mr. Murray with the acting principalship as well. The following six months must have been something akin to a nightmare for him, especially as the School's enrolment was increased to twice its normal numbers by ex-servicemen. However, the School continued to prosper under his direction, when the appointment of Mr. Aberdeen as principal, in September, 1947, took the major burden from his shoulders.

Again, in May, 1951, the sudden passing of M r . Aberdeen once more left him with f u l l responsibility, and it must have been a great relief to him when M r .

Beaniand was appointed Principal in September, 1951. The heavy overload of duties he had to carry, during his term of acting in the dual capacities, could have been directly responsible for the somewhat indifferent health he has since experienced. During the current year, therefore, we have been glad to see h i m gradually shedding his duties, so that he might enjoy better health during his final months in the School.

So now, he is at the conclusion of a long career of service to the Education Department. A l l those of its past and present staff and students who know him well wish him years of happy retirement and good health.

1955 has been a transition year for the S.R.C. Under the recently adopted revised Constitution, representation has been broadened to include as Council members all prefects and house captains as well as form representatives.

Once again the S.R.C. welcomeluncheon, on the first day of the School year, was a happy function at which new students mingled informally with students not so new and with representatives of the staff. In brief speeches the work of the S.R.C. was outlined and the best wishes of the staff and present students were extended to those about to commence senior studies. Catering arrangements for the ninety-five persons present were in the very capable hands of Mrs. Allen, whose ability and generosity we greatly appreciate.

Through their form representatives all students are free to place before the S.R.C. any ideas they may have for the improvement of student's conditions or

amenities.

One bright idea recently adopted was that of placing in the school entrance hall a detailed railway timetable showing destination, time of departure, and number of platform for trains leaving Footscray.

As a result of suggestions put to the S.R.C. an attractive F.T.S. school blazer of improved quality will be available and should prove popular with students.

Our Social Committee has organized dances during the year and assisted in the entertainment of visiting sports teams. The Sports Committee has cooperated with the Sportsmaster, Mr. D. E. Fraser, and with the newly-formed Sports Council. It has maintained oversight of table tennis and other indoor

man; Emeritus Professor A. H. Woodr u f f , who spoke on the subject " I n the beginning, God . . . " and gave us some thoughts on the intricacy of God's creation; and Mr. Clark, a Special Magistrate in the Children's Courts, who told us of his work in the Courts, and pointed out that only 2 or 3 per cent, of the children who appeared before him have ever attended a Sunday School.

The S.R.C. has established annual prizes in Drawing to be awarded in memory of the late E. J. Sedgley, a highly respected teacher in this school for nearly 20 years. Donations have been made to various worthy causes, including N.S.W. Flood Relief, Footscray Hospital, F.T.S. Christian Education Fund, and the Furnishing Fund for the School Assembly Hall.

On behalf of the students of the school we extend our best wishes to M r .

G. Murray, our Vice-Principal, who retires at the end of this year after 35 years of service at this school, and we thank him for his constant willingness to give help and counsel to students on all matters affecting their present and their future well-being.

W e wish to assure our Principal, Mr. Beanland, and members of the staff that their efforts on our behalf during this year have been greatly appreciated. W e should also like to thank M r . R. Seamer, the staff representative on the S.R.C., for his help and guidance throughout the year.

GROUP The Christian Fellowship Group did not start until the second term this year.

This was largely because our school chaplain, Mr. Morgan, was not appointed until then, and so was not available to conduct our Fellowship meetings. These are held during lunch hour each Thursday in Room 1 5.

During the year we had a number of helpful discussions led by M r . Morgan, and witnessed two films: " K e n j i e Comes H o m e " and " T h e Prior C l a i m " , the latter being one of the "Fact and F a i t h " series.

Among the visiting speakers were Mr. Doming, proprietor of a tent-making f i r m in Swanston Street, City, who told us of the practicability of maintaining a saving f a i t h in the Lord Jesus Christ while engaged in his life of a business

MOTHERS' CLUB W e commenced our activities for the year with the usual successful Picnic at the Footscray Gardens, followed by an inspection of the Junior School.

In A p r i l we visited MacRobertson's Confectionery Factory and had a very interesting time. Later in the year we paid visits to Mitchell's Brush Works and Swallow and Ariell's Biscuit Factory, both of which occasions were very much enjoyed by all who took part. Our 29th Birthday was celebrated with a Cabaret Dance in the Assembly Hall, and was especially enjoyable because it was so

different from the common run of Club birthdays. The Mothers again got together to provide afternoon tea and supper during Education Week. It is at this time that you really get to know one another, as you are working so closely together. During the year we had a number of monthly dances, all of which were well patronized and very successful. W e will wind up a very satisfactory year's work with a social afternoon on 14th December.

We extend to all Mothers the compliments of the Season, and hope to see many new members at our meetings next year.

A MESSAGE F R O M T H E S C H O O L CHAPLAIN A true man is more than just an animal that walks on two legs and wears clothes. Manhood is character. The man who is worthy of the name has some real purpose. He aims to make some effective use of his life, not merely to wobble through somehow and enjoy himself on the way. A l l the great men have been men whose purpose in life was to give something to the world. The fellow whose only purpose is to get something out of life for himself never achieves much.

Jesus Christ is the great example of what true manhood is. He served men by his life and his death, not seeking to avoid personal suffering or loss. Those who follow him, serving their fellow men for his sake, and seeking to give rather than to get, are the men who make the best citizens, live the most satisfying life, and develop the most manly character.

To those who go out from school to work I would say: A i m to be men — the life you live is more important than the living you get! A n d remember — the highest manhood is only achieved by sharing the life and purpose of Jesus Christ!

To those who stay on at school I would say: It is never too early for a boy to begin to be a man. Manhood is not years but character.

STAFF CHANGES A t the beginning of 1955, vacancies on the staff were filled by a number of new arrivals.

The most important of these was our new Headmaster, M r . C. Green, who came from Brunswick Tech. and who has quickly fitted into the Footscray system to make his presence felt in the right way.

M r . R. W h i t e , who was formerly instructor in Surveying, joined the Science department, and Mr. F. Haig was appointed Librarian.

C E R T I F I C A T E S I N BUSINESS MANAGEMENT A n important milestone in the history of Footscray Technical School was reached this year, when members of the School Council and representatives f r o m most of Footscray's leading industries witnessed the presentation of Certificates denoting that the recipients had successfully completed a 2-year course in Supervision, an essential pre-requisite for the study of Business Management.

A feature of the evening was that, as part of their training, the successful students organized the very interesting evening themselves.

A t Nicholson Street, Mr. J. Millane joined the Engineering Drawing; Messrs.

A. Bathols and K. Gourlay, Machine Shop; M r . G. W h i t f i e l d , Boilermaking; and Messrs. F. Hutchinson, J. Hartney, R. Cronk and C. O'Meara, the Electrical Trades.

The School as a whole has benefited greatly by the presence of these new members of staff, and we hope they are enjoying their life at Footscray. A n inter-school transfer resulted in the return of Mr. Bassett to Nicholson Street, Engineering Drawing, and Mr. B. Johnson to the Chemistry department.

Proceedings opened with a speech of welcome by M r . G. Bindless of A.C.I. Engineering Pty. Ltd. This was followed by an address by the School Principal, M r . C. H. Beanland, who outlined the circumstances leading to the formation of the classes. Films followed, after which Mr. A. G. M a r t i n of the A m m u nition Factory, left no doubt in his hearers' minds of the benefits that he and the other students obtained from their 2-year course.

It is inevitable that we lose some of the instructors in the end - of - year appointments. Mr. W . Pollock, head of the Mathematics at Nicholson Street, will transfer to Richmond as Headmaster; and M r . I. Scott, senior assistant at Ballarat Road and Metallurgy instructor, will become Glenroy's first Principal.

Mr. Haig goes to the Teachers' Training College, and Mr. J. Pitt to Preston, where no doubt he will apply his dramatic ability. Mr. Godfrey, from the Machine Shop at Ballarat Road, transfers to Ferntree Gully, M r . R. Stroud, Sheetmetal and Plumbing, to Preston; and Mr. F. Seymour to English and Social Studies at St. Albans High School. The students in training, Messrs. B. Einsiedel, N. Greenaway, H. Jones, L. Kokkin, A. O'Hoy and D. Mills, will be posted to destinations unknown at present.

M r . R. G. Parsons, the School Council President, emphasised the importance of having properly trained supervisors in industry, and then presented certificates to the following candidates — G. WHO'S WHO in Form Z W I L L I A M MACDOUGALL nourishes •— or nurses—a specialized hobby, namely birdwatching; but has no interest in most of the winged species. His other interest — football — is of much the same type, for although he manages to be where the ball isn't, its flight is a matter of detached, objective interest to him. He thinks that bounce and push are really overdone and not f i t t i n g for a modest and retiring character.

NOEL OLVER — A proud member of the Grace Park Tennis Club, Noel delights in telling us how he beat Frank Sedgman — at draughts.

Among his more startling moves is a proposal to introduce darts and hockey into the school. W h a t ' s a lost eye here or there, most of us are one-eyed anyway. In his spare time, he worries about his urgent need to get the urge to work, an e f f o r t that leaves him incapable of doing much about it.

MAXWELL WEBB — Teddy plays a big part in the school football team, and sometimes his robust style continues long after the game is over. His mathematical interests are essentially practical and he has decided that an M.G. has a better performance f r o m 0-30 than a 31 Whippet, which he clocked at 27 sec.

His sound life oscillates dangerously between parties and the local Rec. — pronounced wreck — dance.

A L A N C O L E M A N came to us, without warning, from Essendon Junior Tech and by the time we realized what had come among us, the trap was sprung. Despite his jungle haircut and unorthodox gymnastic style, he disclaims any relationship to Tarzan, though he apes to outwit the villainous examiners this year.

RICHARD C O P E L A N D — This star of our baseball team is also its chief or| * S | ganizer and publicity agent and he has distinguished himself fur||Ni: ther by playing in the interstate team. He is also a navigator whose skill and experience in handling a sailing boat, will enable him to apply the technique of tacking, sailing close to the wind, and eventually steering through the course next year.

JIM BARKER distinguished himself — as though that were necessary — by winning the award as the school's best and fairest footballer this year. One of his mates has described him as a toothless, toothbrush of an electrical engineer who owns a mechanical wonder.

His skill as a car driver came from the steady practice he gets by absconding from classes.

PETER W H I T F I E L D continues the Munchhausen tradition when he regales us every Monday morning with accounts of his Saturday night dance steps — in the wrong direction. A n enthusiastic footballer, ardent cricketer, and cool swimmer, he plans to extend his sporting activities to cover the field of comedy; this won't be a very sharp transition. He believes in free expression, even in what he writes on old " b o m b s " .

REG LIPSON — This cheerful, likeable advertisement for, and shareholder in, " c u r l e y - p e t " — not a person, a preparation — likes school to the extent of getting up every morning to catch the first edition of the Spirit of Progress. He plans to become either a teacher or a bird breeder and we keep egging him on and giving him the bird. He is an enthusiastic football follower and goes to the pictures every Saturday night to give the f i l m actresses a thrill.

H E R B E R T IRONS is „,. famous around the school ^Bmm.' as a stand-in for Clark Gable, and spends a lot of time singing "Buttons and Bows". W e hope that j * , ^ ^ % before long, he will be securely buttoned up and tied with a severe bow. He is a member of the school football team but was eliminated — as the result of his misc a l c u l a t i o n — in the first round of the table tennis tournament. He went broke selling autographed photographs when the supply exceeded the demand on the opening day of the bargain sale.

DAVE BARNETT warily investigates everything that goes on in the school, and really amazes us with his skill at leaving no stone unturned or avenue unexplored.

He trains energetically for athletics, debates the relative merits of Holdens and Austins, deplores the incursions of diesels, and worries about what people say, think, suspect, or might write in Blue and Gold.

KELVIN PAYNE — Muga's towering ambitions have been realized to the extent of about 6 foot 2 in his socks, some of which he hands out in in the school cricket and football teams. He makes a trip home to Alexandra every Friday to play football or something. In that district, the game apparently goes on right till the end of the year. There's nothing odd about this so long as you leave the term game conveniently undefined.

n BRIAN CLARKSON — 41 Prefect and lively secretary of the S.R.C., Brian ,. comes from the one pony village of Hurstbridge, 1 which will in the course time jhfe*. become one horse, i ^ n A. A when the log bridge is replaced by a plank with rope rail. Einy is in the forefront with haircuts, having sponsored the economical basin cut.

Next year he will try to sign up with Jack Kramer as a professional racket carrier.

He also passes exams often and easily.

JEFFERY LEANEY buzzes into the school grounds every day in a small green beetle which on closer inspection is revealed as a Morris Minor.

Some of the chirpings, creakings and squeakings emanating from his place, come from the flocks of canaries he raises; after months of patient research, he has decided to reduce the mortality rate among his flocks by f i t t i n g ant-caps to the cages.

GEORGE WILSMORE has a lengthy and solid experience of casting, not the trout or drama kind, the plaster.

Sticking plaster also plays a role ^ d " * * ' * i in his car, which keeps " I ^ P / within the 30 m.p.h. limit only because it runs on three of its six or seven cylinders from here to North Williamstown where, in a sense, he lives.

The only student in our form who is engaged — in intensive study. We others have been unhappily wedded to our work L^^lf Wj years now, though m m J k • • s o r n e 0 f us will be judiciously separated before long. Bruce has finally realized his life's ambition by being elected a life member of the Smileaway Club. He's also a major shareholder in Solvo's Limited — good soap, you ask him! Dux two, three years running, isn't it?

BRUCE GANGELL — A Vanguard enthusiast, constantly engaged in the interminable argument with the Holden team.

Another timeconsuming task is the constant struggle he has to engage in to keep his hair in order.

He lost the battle one Friday, when he took a shower in the hydraulics lab, the only real benefit he has ever got there.

BRIAN BROWN appeared among us some time this year and remained in decent obscurity until a rainstorm — strangely predicted by the Weather Bureau — washed off the Yallourn patina of coal dust and showed him for what he is. Just what that is, nobody has yet succeeded in defining, but by next year we shall have dug deeper and will then tell all.

ARTHUR ALEXANDER • — T h i s column gives us the occasion for making a heartfelt, heartbroken plea. W e have at last acquired a defensive deafness to your discourse; but you alone can supply the remedy to your singing.

Our rest is your silence. Arthur's pnysical interests are cycling and T.T., and we have no reliable information about his mental activities.

BOB WOODGER infiltrated unobtrusively into the school three years ago, but has since made himself conspicuous by hard work and eccentric concentration, which is a very elliptical state of affairs when you try to imagine it.

Pedalling his novel car to school has contributed to his success in school athletics.

ERIC HANSTEAD endorses Falstaff's view that " i t was always the trick of our English nation, if they have a good thing, to make it too c o m m o n " , and accordingly does not overdo attendance at classes. But his frequent visits to hospital need not give rise to alarm or despondency, his malady is not physical.

J O H N MOLLISON, on the other hand, is a reformed character to the extent of putting in an appearance at classes as regularly as twice in succession. This is probably a response to the serenade "Dear John", irresistibly performed by the class. John is a cool swimmer and a sharp House Captain; these adjectives, we understand, are words of praise in the English he understands best.

MAURICE LANE is distinguished by the ownership of a father who owns a bus line, two De Soto cars, and Maurice, in that order of worth. He has done his National Service Training and a substantial amount of work at the University, and is thereby qualified to tell us where we stand or fall in the academic world. It's good that someone should know our place, because some of our instructors tell us that we don't. Moreover, they claim to know where we could go, too!

JOHN MCDOWELL IS constantly executing a slow motion retreat from the girls of Reservoir, who have put in pleas and petitions to the local barbers, imploring them to spare his manly locks and so preserve his looks. His manifold experiences provide us with interesting Monday morning reading.

. GRAHAM CARMICHAEL j — The long boy with the 1 short haircut claims that nobody can get him riled, and we are waiting with interest to see whether the Chem III examiner can succeed where all others have failed. He has a sunny personality and a fancy for a girl called Nancy.

ROSS HENDERSON — This hill-billy emerges reluctantly from his rustic cabin in the Dandenongs to lament, on sunny mornings, that he isn't back there fishing in the creek. He is a skilled practitioner at the science of deflection, competently steering M r . Porter from German to relativity, philosophy, but never philanthropy, because we haven't collected that five shillings yet.

BARRY McGREGOR is known to M r . Johnson as 'Cactus Face', which is botanically unsound because they don't have red hair.

He nourishes thoughts of reprisals on the five students who hoisted his lurid tie on the flag-pole, where it fluttered like a signal of distress or infectious disease, Fortunately nobody caught it.

BARRIE LANE deserves his place in this "WHOSE Z O O " chiefly because he is a reputed and perhaps reputable dark horse with the fair sex.

He has earned some distinction as a baseballer but is still in second base in English. W e hope that he'll walk home this year; if someone doesn't strike him out before that.

NEIL STUBBS—The last , of a fast declining Australian tribe comes to us disguised in unfamiliar tartan tattoo. He spends hours in drawing classes drawing up plans for his favourite sport, footbrawl. Throughout the year pushed, and exhorted his team to many a spectacular and glorious defeat. Nevertheless, the feats were admirable despite the frequent waywardness of the feet.

ARTHUR OTTERY makes his presence in the lab evident by the discreet tinkle of fractured glass and the indiscreet murmur of m u f f l e d curses. His heavy hand with a beaker is evidence of his prowess as a weight lifter. He is a versatile lad who skirts easily around a fair number of fair subjects.

FRANK HOOK — W h e n he is not talking, dreaming, and eating cars till we long for the return of the buggy era, Frank waves flags for the school football team, at the same time giving profuse, unheeded, and unneeded advice to the team and the umpire. His unflagging interest in school work and pony tails probably explains how he failed to flag at least one goal, thereby contributing his mite to the games we might have won.

GEOLOGY E X C U R S I O N S Geology excusions are essentially serious affairs, but on odd occasions a spice of humour gives piquancy to them.

Attendance at four part-day excursions and at one full-day excursion is necessary for those who wish to qualify for the subject of Geology.

Our first part-day excursion was to Studley Park, the home of seclusion and natural splendour. Armed with cameras, geological hammers, notebooks, pencils, apples, chewing gum and a teacher, we studied various structures and land formations, including tertiary hi I leaps, high brick walls, the price of fish, and why bananas grow on trees. Often our study of these important subjects would be rudely interrupted by the sound of a raucous voice explaining, " W e can't see it, but its over there, so write about four pages about i t . " Two hours spent in this way was quite sufficient to convince us that the earth is not just green cheese and crust, and so, from this day onward, we began to t h i n k increasingly more like geologists and less like sand castle builders.

Our next part-day excursion carried us to another of Nature's more beautiful sanctuaries, North Coburg lake area.

There we saw more strange geological features, including Pentridge, park-seats, and steel diving boards. W e also learned that the little holes in bluestone were not put there by Junior with his little drill. One point of interest was the basalt pavement, which had resulted when a thick bed of hot lava, on cooling, cracked into almost perfect hexagons. A study of "hillside-creep", or movement of soil

down a hillside, ended this excursion.

Royal Park came next, and here we were instructed to investigate river terraces (not the kind that slum abolitionists are interested in) and a " l a v a p l a i n " we could not see. " W r i t e it u p " , came the familiar voice. " T o the railway c u t t i n g , " was the next order, so off we went. A n adventurous time was had by all who scaled the walls looking for fossils. Had the grass not been at the bottom, poor Duncan would now be permanently set in the ground as a telegraph pole. He fell from the top of the cutting in an avalanche of boulders, pebbles, " t u r r e t e l l a " and " c o n u s " .

Finally came Heyington. Here we saw lakes without water, flood plains that do not flood, and a lava plain that did. The most interesting features here were S.E.C. high tension poles, an open drain, and a stone throwing exhibition.

The climax of the year's work was the excursion to the Bacchus Marsh-Werribee Gorge, Lerderderg Gorge and Coimadai area. Caulfield and Footscray Techs, combined for this trip. Three cars provided transport for the eleven of us who went. Our first stop was at the Dierrewarrh creek on the Ballarat road. Here we saw "paper shales" which were paperthin sheets of rock. Extinct volcanos were also pointed out to us. A f t e r a quick look at various other features, we went on our way again, this time to the Maddingley Brown Coal Open Cut just out of Bacchus Marsh. Here we spent our time dodging 10-ton diesel trucks, 50-ton loading shovels and 5,000-volt power cables. Besides having a huge brown coal deposit, this open cut has springs at the bottom which feed in about

40 gallons per hour, and run-off water from the top feeds in an additional 400 gallons per hour.

The most welcome order of the day was, " T a k e half an hour o f f for lunch".

But 20 minutes later, it was " L o a d up, we're off again". This time our objectives were the Werribee Gorge, to see the effects of long departed glaciers, and the "Council T r e n c h " , the only place in Victoria where Triassic rock is to be found. While we were there we heard an eerie echo. Was it from somebody calling during last year's excursion? Or was it just Duncan calling from the other side?

Back then to the cars, and off we went to Coimadai, where we saw mineral springs that had not sprung for years, and a limestone quarry that had not operated for a very long time. W h e n we had finished our inspection of these remarkable features it was 4.30, so the tour was declared finished and a tired, dirty, but as usual, happy, wisecracking team left for home.

The usual demonstration of glassblowing and organic chemistry manipulation and apparatus was also shown, perhaps to impress the matriculation students from the High Schools. Fortunately we were able to see part of the physics school in the short time which remained after our conducted tour around the chemistry school. There we saw the cyclotron, which is nearing completion; but the majority of visitors were interested in the 5,000 valve electronic brain and the loud cracking of a high voltage spark in the bevatron.

VISIT TO MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY CENTENARY EXHIBITION The use of Carbon 14 and its archaeological relationship was expounded to us by a very notable chemist — notable because of her sex. After describing how the Carbon 14 content of dead trees may be measured and related to its age, our lecturer invited us to come back after the exhibition had officially closed that afternoon and delve more deeply into the subject. Naturally the offer was only accepted by the vainest casanovas of the other schools, and not by us.

A n interesting demonstration of how the internal energy content of a molecule may be affected by the intensity of an incident radiation, such as ultra violet, was given in the basement where Raman spectra were being investigated.

The demonstration molecules were four balls connected by springs suspended on the end of a mechanical vibrator, and illuminated by a beam of ultra violet light of known frequency. The frequency of the vibrator was varied so that dif-

On the morning of Thursday, 1 0th February, the Senior School staff and students were privileged to see General Motors' presentation, "Preview of Progress". W e were shown a host of new inventions and developments such as cooking with a cold stove, detecting criminals with ultra-violet light, piping light around corners, and making old cabbages look like new. Other items included hammering a nail with a glass flask, a tiny but powerful mercury vapour lamp, the transmission of sound by light, and a tablecloth with a pretty design which was visible only under ultra-violet light. The highlights of the show were the small rocket planes powered by carbon dioxide capsules, and the model pulse jet which made much more noise than most of us expected.

Thanks again to General Motors for a very interesting and educational preview of things to come.

R A D I O CLUB The main achievement of the year was the construction of a 3-stage transistor, or crystal triode, receiving set for the School Exhibition. This was our first experience with this type of equipment, and a little of the theory behind their operation is given here.

Substances are generally divided, according to conductivity, into three groups — conductors, insulators, and a group of substances that lie between these two termed semi-conductors. Semiconductors have resistivities between 10- 2 ohm/cm 3 and 10 4 ohm/cm 3 .

Germanium and silicon are two such substances.

W h e n a small amount of arsenic or other pentavalent impurity is added to the quadrivalent germanium, its conductivity is increased. This is due to the surplus electron loosely attached to the impurity atom, and if sufficient energy is given to this electron it will be dislodged from the arsenic atom and is then free to travel through the semiconductor. Now if a metal electrode is placed in contact with the semi-conductor and is made positive with respect to the semi-conductor, there will be a flow of electrons to the metal electrode and therefore a flow of current. If a tervalent impurity is added, only three of the four valence bonds are satisfied.

The unsatisfied bond becomes a " h o l e " and a current will flow through the semiconductor by the travel of the holes.

Semi-conductors which conduct by having free electrons are referred to as " n " type and those which conduct by means of positive holes, " p " type.

3 STAGE TRANSISTOR

CIRCUIT

By experiment it was found that if a second electrode is placed in contact with the semi-conductor close to the other electrode, then a current change in one electrode circuit will cause a corresponding amplified change in the current in the other electrode circuit.

This type of crystal triode is a point contact type, the electrodes being called the collector and emitter and the semiconductor the base. There is also another type called a junction transistor. It con-

sists either of two pieces of " p " type germanium with a layer of " n " type in between them so as to form two junctions, or two pieces of " n " type with a layer of " p " type between them. In this type the layer in between is the base and the other two pieces, the collector and emitter respectively.

The construction of these triodes is very rugged and their physical size is small, and so they lend themselves to such uses as in hearing aids and other small portable equipment. Circuiting is also simplified, as may be seen from the diagram of the receiving set shown.

M r . O'Meara has given us a great deal of help throughout the year. However, operations have been suspended since the Exhibition, largely because the Gas Corporation has insisted on f i l l i n g the Radio Room with a particularly foulsmelling gas. The gas, however, has had

no perceptible effect on the rat population of the place, nor, for that matter, has Gangell's rabbit trap. Brian Clarkson, Jeffrey Leaney, and Noel Olver have also graced the Club with their presence. The Radio Club as a whole hope that our bulky source of information and inspiration, Dave Godfrey, will be with us again next year.

Burley's guiding hand is John Franzi, president of our club, whose work the members have always appreciated. Our secretary could perhaps be more e f f i cient, but maybe he has little time to spare. Improvements on the darkroom were carried out under the supervision of John Franzi. The number of active club members has increased slightly. W e hope to see a much bigger response next year.

During the year four dances were organized by the Dance Committee, and were a great success socially but financially a failure. The attendance at the first dance was excellent, but the next three were poorly supported. Students must remember that these dances are organized for their entertainment, and unless more interest is shown the practice of holding them may have to be abandoned. A small presentation was recently made to Mrs. Allen as a token of our appreciation for the wonderful work she did during the year. The Donee Committee would also like to thank all those who helped to make the dances the social success they were.

The Dramatic Club (By J. Pitt) Not long after my return to the Old Tech., Mr. Howells informed me a " s h o w " was under way and asked me if I was interested in taking part. !i seemed then that I had never been away from the school. Rehearsals as a student with the old gang, Foo, Titch, George, J.O. and Lukey and those hectic performances at the " R o y a l " came back to my mind with exciting vividness.

I must be getitng old, for I t h i n k of those diploma days with great fondness. I have long since forgotten the heartache of exam results.

W e called a meeting and had a good attendance.

W i t h the wonderful new assembly hall and stage, there was nothing in the way of building an active Dramatic Club. However, when casting time came, we had a poor turnout in numbers.

I would like to ask the diploma students " W h a t do you do with your Wednesday afternoons? — Sport? Study?

Pictures?" Believe me, you'd f i n d the work on or behind stage, in preparation for or during a show, a great excitement and relaxation from normal school work.

Ask the cast of " H a r l e q u i n a d e . " I am certain they will agree with me. A n d remember, you are finding that much discussed stuff " c u l t u r e " !

The fabulous world of the theatre will open its doors to you and, wandering through its halls of drama, you'll find strange and wonderful enchantments. If nothing else, it will teach you the use of pure poetry — like this — and it works wonders when you are out to impress the young lady.

Mr. Howells had produced " H a r l e quinade" previously and, as well as providing us with much help in production, he was able to get us experienced players for the important parts of " E d n a " and "Muriel".

Mrs. Hamilton and Joan Wills, from the office staff, as " D a m e Maud" and " M i s s Fishlock" were excellent.

Bruce Key undertook the d i f f i c u l t role of the producer, " J a c k W a k e f i e l d , " and he is to be congratulated for the success he made of it.

We coached Graeme Taylor and Ian Jones as " C h u d l e i g h " and the " 1 s t Halberdier," and in both performances they came out with flying

colours. Ray Gilbertson was every inch the " P o l i c e m a n " — both longitudinally and laterally.

A l a n Marchant gave a fine study as the theatre manager, Ian McDonough as " J o h n n y , " Dave Wilson as the " 2 n d Halberdier," Bob Carter as " T y b a l t , " and Bruce Brown as " T o m " all the way from Australia.

In sheer desperation we had to cast me as the " R o m e o " of the play w i t h i n the play. This part should have been filled by one of the elegant young Romeos of the 7th or 8th forms. There must have been many who were hiding their histrionic abilities in a labyrinth of higher calculus or behind the complexities of electronic wiring diagrams.

Soon rehearsals began.

W e would hammer the scene between Bruce and A l a n into shape, then drag Graeme out of the converter to become "Mr. Chudleigh." "Goodbye!" he shouts, and falls over the step on the way out. Let's try it again, and again. More goodbyes, more falls.

The sight of Joan in tears, scudding across the stage with her soul in torment raised pity in the hearts of her many admirers who peeped into rehearsals to see what the commotion was about. " F a i t h , we may put up our pipes and begone . . . our pipes and begone . . . our pipes and begone . . . " ask Ian Jones all about it. Inflections, stresses, pauses, gestures, movements, and breaks into uncontrollable laughter. But remember you can't laugh at yourself when you're on stage.

Even in comedy you must have complete self-control.

The play is taking shape, but it is still in pieces.

This is not a satisfactory method of production, for a play should

grow as a whole — character assisting character, situation leading to situation.

Then the last hectic week of evening rehearsals into the dead of night. Under M r . Howells' organization and through M r . Beanland's generosity, we had a stage, set, and lighting facilities which many local repertory companies would envy. A t last the play came to life.

The first performance was on Thursday, 16th June, on Presentation Night.

As speeches were being made and congratulations expressed, we were frantic with costumes and the mysteries of greasepaint. A n d then we were on!

Of the performance, what can I say?

As I was both actor and part producer, the occasion calls for some humility. But frankly I t h i n k it was a success, and in my opinion the cast did an excellent job.

They thoroughly enjoyed it, and demonstrated by their discipline and collective effort, that the school is capable of a high standard of anything from Revue to Tragedy.

But a dramatic club will never succeed without the active participation of many of you. You have the facilities, see that you use them. Organize and control your own Dramatic Club.

Spend your Wednesday afternoons designing sets, building them; writing plays, reading them; learning make-up, costume design, stage lighting, production and acting You'll find that it will add greatly to the fullness of your school life.

A l t h o u g h the first part of the play was interesting, the Interval came just when we felt it was most needed. A f t e r a breather, we sat down in our rapidly hardening seats to witness the end of this thrilling play, which was keeping everyone in suspenders. W e noticed, among other things, that England must have reduced her offer of "good siward and ten thousand m e n " , to the " t e n " without the " t h o u s a n d " , as there was very little of Birnham Wood moving across the stage. W e had been told previously in English class that, in the closing scene of the play, we would feel sympathetic towards Macbeth; but I think that when his corpse got up and thanked us for coming, most of the boys felt that he had been let off much too lightly.

SENIOR SCHOOL SPORT on which each sport will be represented.

This move should be a success, but much depends on the backing received from the whole school. Fine school spirit was shown throughout this year in the support given by M r . Johnson, M r . Ryan, Mrs. A l l a n , captains of teams (a fine bunch), and team members who, win or lose, gave of their very best for the school A sportsmaster's life can be quite a happy one.

A sportsmaster's life is not a happy one. The local S.M. spent most of 1955 watching his wards being outdone in various sporting activities. Our football team, last year's premiers, could not continue that devastating run, but gave Geelong its greatest fright for the year with a fine finishing effort. A t Ballarat the team trotted out in spanking new guernseys and socks, looking very glamorous indeed until obliterated by torrents of rain. Jim Barker won the football award.

Greatest headway this year was made by the tennis team. W e a k for years, it now could become a strong combination.

Our baseballers and cricketers show commendable enthusiasm but still need a little more art. The athletic and swimming carnivals were not exactly triumphs for Footscray, but our athletes swear they will sparkle next year, particularly as Footscray is organizing the carnival.

John Mollison won the C.R.T.S. trophy for swimming for the third successive year.

FOOTBALL The football season kicked off with a practice game against University High School, in which we were narrowly defeated after a hard struggle. The following week we were again unlucky, this time against Northcote High School, being defeated by less than a goal. The final two practice games, against Swinburne and Melbourne Technical Colleges, were both won by Footscray in grand style.

Next year the School's sporting activities will be organized by a Sports Council,

Caulfield visited us the following week for the first scoring game in the competition. Early in the first quarter Caulfield surprised Footscray with their spirit and general play. As Footscray began to settle down, Caulfield's early stars began to fade, and by half time we had a good lead. A f t e r half time Footscray took control all over the ground, and then the only interest was in the winning margin. The final scores were, Footscray 16-20 — 1 1 6; Caulfield 5-6 — 36.

The first away from home game was at Swinburne. Rain had made the ground soft in places and the game was hard and at times spiteful. The first quarter was very even, with Swinburne being slightly ahead because of their more purposeful and accurate forward lines.

Poor kicking in the second quarter stopped Footscray from having a winning lead at half time; 2 goals 6 for the quarter is not good football. The third quarter saw Swinburne making full use

of the slight breeze to gain a 23 point lead at tne start of the last quarter.

A f t e r an encouraging address by Mr. Johnson, we started the last quarter f u l l of fight. The ball was on the forward line, within range, for the first 10 minutes of the last quarter, but we could only manage 3 points. Two of these were inexcusable misses from point blank range. Swinburne scored at each attempt, and ran out clear winners in a game in which the two sides were much closer together than the scores indicated.

Scores: Swinburne 9.12 — 66, Footscray 4-12 — 36. Best Players: Stubbs, Webb, Maxfield, and Peterson.

After the exams, with a team weakened through injury, we made a trip to Ballarat to play the School of Mines. Ballarat had the usual wet welcome for us, it being raining when we got there and raining when we left. We fielded the bare 18 players, which included Maurie Lane who showed good team spirit by playing with an injured ankle. The football opened at a high standard, considering the conditions of the ground, with neither team being able to gain a vital break. A t half time only points separated the teams. A f t e r half time the game deteriorated a little, but there were some brilliant individual

exhibitions on both sides. Playing with virtually 17 men, it was sheer guts and determination that kept us in the game at three quarter time. The heavy ground, however, took its toll on the 'Scray players in the last quarter, Ballarat winning by 12 points. This was the first time the team had worn the new jumpers and socks; and they set a high standard of teamwork, determination, and team spirit for future teams to live up to.

Scores: Ballarat 7 - 8 — 5 0 ; Footscray 5-8 — 38.

Best Players: Newman, Barker, Payne, Lane, and Peterson.

Geelong visited us for the last game of the season. The visiting team was first entertained at a luncheon, more like a feast, catered for by Mrs. Allen.

W e started this game determined to make Geelong earn their place at the top of the ladder. In the first quarter 'Scray were dazzled by Geelong's machine-like teamwork with every cog working perfectly. By quarter time they had a good lead. Geelong continued on their merry way in the second quarter, until halfway through, when a sudden change came into the game. Now it was Footscray's turn to dictate the play, and by half time we had pulled up to within 12 points. A f t e r the long interval

the game became clean, fast and high standard football, with first one team and then the other getting on top but neither getting a good break. Geelong ran out winners by 9 points. Scores: Geelong 9-10 — 64; Footscray 8 - 7 — 55. Best Players: Barker, Payne, Coleman, Webb, and Maxfield.

This game ended a season in which Footscray were very unlucky not to win more games. The interest in the team, and the team spirit have increased tremendously over the last two years, but there are still not enough players. Surely a school as big as this can run a football team with reserves. Our congratulations go to Jim Barker for winning the school award of Champion Footballer for this year.

The team wish to thank Mr. Johnson for his guidance and help throughout the season, Mr. Fraser for giving up his time organizing the games, Mrs. Allen for cooking and serving the meal so much enjoyed by ourselves and our Geelong visitors, Frank Hook for standing in as a goal umpire, and all those members of staff and students who f a i t h f u l l y supported us throughout the year. TENNIS

TENNIS Our team, captained by Noel Olver, enjoyed a year of good tennis but did not have outstanding success. Soundly beaten by Swinburne and Geelong, less soundly by Caulfield, and cheated of a win by rain at Ballarat, the team was just not strong enough for the competition. Our star performers were Noel Olver and Doug. Lee, who won a large percentage of their sets throughout the year. Noel was unbeaten at first singles.

Another constantly good performer was A l a n Coleman. W i t h the i n f l u x of new talent and the continued good playing of the above three, next year's team should be strong contenders for the interschools' cup. Our thanks go to M r .

Ryan for his interest in the team throughout the year, and his willingness to lend distinction to the group photograph above.

BALLARAT TRIP On Wednesday, 13th July, we went to Ballarat to play football, baseball, and tennis matches with the Ballarat School of Mines. W e dined with the opposing players, and after we had had a quick look at the town, our bus took us to the football ground. The rain, which was to become worse, had only just begun when the tennis players and baseballers commenced play. In a long, gruelling match the footballers were defeated 7-8 to 5-8

by Ballarat. The baseballers in a spirited finish were unlucky to lose 9-8, while the tennis players saved a little of our honour in abandoning play because of the rain. W e had a quick tea and then our bus brought us through the fog to Melbourne, arriving about 7.30 p.m.

CRICKET

BASEBALL

This year's team comprised only 3 members of last year's team, but this gave the younger lads who wished to play cricket the opportunity of doing so.

There were enough of these for us to field 2 elevens.

The first eleven played the opening game against Melbourne.

Footscray batted first and made the modest total of 76, the principal scorer being Ransford, with a cavalier-like 27 not out.

Melbourne were put through for only 55, due mainly to a brilliant piece of bowling

by Kelvin Payne, who took 7 for 20.

The next game was against Caulfield.

Footscray again batted first, making only 66, which Caulfield were able to better by 20 runs. Our game against Swinburne did not eventuate because rain washed out all hope of play each time the game was scheduled to be played.

The cricket was not high class, but enjoyment was had by all who took part, and the enthusiasm shown by the new members of the teams should ensure that success will come Footscray's way next season.

Although beaten in four out of five competition games, our players performed very well against the bigger and more experienced sides of Melbourne, Swinburne, Caulfield and Ballarat. In the remaining game, by combining team batting with good fielding, we held a strong Geelong nine to a draw.

The find of the season was Barry McGregor, a third year chemist, who recorded three home runs for the season.

Others to perform well were Graham Carmichael, Barry Lane, Ern Jones, and M a x Congdon.

Results: Footscray, 6 v. Caulfield, 8; Swinburne, 12 v. Footscray, 4; Ballarat, 9 v. Footscray, 8; Footscray, 4 v. Geelong, 4; Footscray, 7 v. Melbourne, 13.

From the above results it can be seen that we cannot claim to have had a very successful season, but it was very pleasing to see so many f i f t h formers taking an interest in the game. The experience gained by these players should help to ensure the success of the team next year.

5A ''So fair and foul a form I have not seen" is an expression that can be applied to 5A. It comprises geniuses, and others — all hoping to get jobs as gardeners with the local council.

Our brightest sparks claim to do five minutes study per subject per night per week providing there isn't anything better to do; the other oddities around the form are either leaving next year, taking over their fathers' millions, or getting married.

First in the class, only because of his alphabetical primacy, is Boccalatte who choofs up from his chook farm at Werribee every day, and, from a set of statistics he compiled, it is apparent that his champion rooster lays one egg per 500 grains of wheat, provided that the temperature is constant. Brown from the bush is one of our table tennis fiends, he is usually found wearing his mother's handbag as a schoolbag.

Brown is definitely a lone ranger and paddles his own canoe. Courtnay rambles in from Reservoir each day with his super-deluxe, straight, swept-back, duck-tailed crewcut. He loves motor cycles, his favourite topic of conversation being why a motor bike is not a death trap. Dear Davy Dawson, whose dear dad won Tatts yesterday, has gained many new friends today. His hobby seems to be getting rid of money as quickly as possible. He was mistaken for a sheep at this year's Show, and had his hair shorn into a crew cut. 'Several days later, he received a letter from the R.A.S. to say that he had won the champion super-coarse W.I.R.E.class ribbon for his fleece.

of all classical music and the best figures are like M a r i l y n Monroe's. He haunts the table tennis room, probably because it's the coolest part of the school. Harris possesses a thick mop of hair which is best described as a super-ultra-straight, classically-waved, duck-tailed, truncated mass of long tubular filaments. Under it lies a brain of considerable capacity, judging by the dimensions of his head.

He takes a dim view of trivial practical jokes and usually says, " W h y don't you kids grow up?" Horace Heal, from back of Mernda, has had the exclusive pleasure of repeating the 5th year again.

He's going to become a copper or a wool classer in the near future. He's been threatened with death by several of the criminal element of the form if he turns copper. Hodges is the only exCollingwood Tech member in the class.

First in and last out of the table tennis rocm is his proud boast. Uses very thick glasses to sleep behind during lectures.

Hughes and Sutherland, who are the inseparable Siamese twins of the form, regard the ten-minute breaks as too short, the seats at the back of the room as theirs, and Chemistry with M r . H 2 0 son as a walkover. Strangely, they do the least work and get the best marks Favourite pastimes are table tennis and chalk throwing.

Ernest Jones, from Sunshine, claims to be the only boy in the school with a steady girl friend. He is the start of the form at sports.

Brian Jones graduated to Footscray Tech from Preston Tech or Brunswick Cycling Club. It is his modest opinion that he can hike a bike past any VS. He tries to make us giggle with his iggles. Bruce Key was star of the drac sack. Sorry! Dramatic club. He intends to become a surveyor in the near future, and will probably be sacked the next week on account of his approximations.

" S p i v " reckons it near enough to 5000 feet, because it's easier to multiply by that number. Jock Mackay (pronounced Mee-eye), alias Haggis McTaggis, finds great delight in attempting to act the part of Elizabeth-Jane, and from a critic's point of view could become a lastclass actor if he had a lot of experience, and I mean a lot. The spare time which Mac has between his KBC set and physics studies is profitably occupied in practising his inherited Scotch sagacity.

Peter Moate comes to light with many weird and wonderful methods and hypotheses in Maths IC; he claims to be the only woman-hater in the form — he hates to be without them.

Keith Power, our bushwhacker from Mernda, says that his home-made cartridges can knock a rabbit over at 1000 yards. The after effects of the detonation of one of these cartridges is a dense cloud of smoke and rabbit plastered over Mr. Power's property. W i l l y Reed, future A i r Marshal of the R.A.A.F., has developed a holiday mania during maths periods.

The name W i l l y stands for " W i l l y turn up or not?". But Bill never worries because, he says, he's " g o t the clues".

Stinky Styzinski is a great believer in the T R U T H , and may be seen reading it every Thursday. He practises darts in English, swears at us in Polish, but insists that he is praising us in French.

James (Ford-Mercury) Tomlinson is tall, lanky, and cranky, though he says he's never cranked his father's Mercury

in his life. From descriptions we have received of this Mercury, it seems to have trigger torque, animal-like acceleration, a purr-pull motor, and 5000 b.h.p.

Reckons he picked the " 5 5 Redex winner 6 months before it started, which isn't bad when you consider how long it took the judges to do it. Keith Woolwork says that his Faber guess-stick (slide rule to the uninitiated) is more accurate than any set of 5 figure tables, a claim which he often has to dfeend against various maths teachers. He looks about 5 y.o. but says he's 16 y.o. Favourite pastime is searching for his bag and books. Vic Werbicki — Last and by all means least is Vic. (I'm taking a chance here, he's bigger than me). Tall, blond, and handsome (I've got to pacify him), he says he often has to defend against various yet. Vic's idea is that if he doesn't know it, he'll never know it, therefore he sleeps through classes. Nevertheless, he always gets near the top marks.

P. C O U R T N A Y 5B This year 5B comprises 23 persons who, according to teachers who know us, have been delivered to the wrong government institution. Facts supporting this are that half the form are Engineers and that among the others are people like Nev. Beyer and C l i f f Ransford.

Our mutual friend, John Harrison, is going into the army. How lucky is the navy!

There are many great movements in this

form, one being the Table Tennis Encouragement Group. A member of this group is Harris, who is the Open Singles Champion. Doug. Lee is another mighty player and is always beating " D i n g " Donovan 21-0. The T.T. Brigade are always packed up 5 minutes before the bell and are away on the first clang.

W e have among us, however, some geniuses. Our F.P.E., " C r e a m y " Ransford, starred in Maths and Chem. Nobody ever copies his results though, because he's the only one who can read his writing. " D i n g " Donovan, who does nothing but guard his books all day, is another bright spark in dull surroundings.

He does nix in class and comes up with 90s in the exams. A dark horse to watch is Bob Carter. He sometimes tries some wrestling holds on the butterflies he chases, but is usually engrossed in thrillers like " M a c b e t h " or "Great Expectations". Andy Lezdkahrs and Ron Clark lead many form rebellions.

Then there remain Ron Gray and Dick Sorensen, two bosom pals who are never seen apart. Roy Jackson, A l a n Meers, A l a n Marchant, Ken Cummings, and Dave Wilson are some of the more conscientious students. Then there are the three boys, Doug. Johnstone, Larry Stephens and Daryl Marshall, who not only are addicted to table tennis, but are also friends. They assure us that it's good for the system. In conclusion, we must mention the great friendship between Donovan, Lee, Beyer, and Da Costs, and also the fact that we have a budding fiddler in our form in Hughie McDonough.

5C W e are expecting any day now to see one of our number come roaring into school triumphantly waving a crash helmet, and to recognize, through a choking cloud of dust, that mudW a l l y Oliver, his dream at last realized spattered demon of the speed track, in having won his motor-bike "scramble".

Rob Wilson, who is a baseball player keeps his throwing arm in condition by brushing (raking might be a better word) his hair with a brush, the plastic bristles of which are almost fused together. According to Rob, this came about when

the brush was put on a heater, but it is rumoured that the bristles melted from friction caused by the number of times the brush is used per day. Graeme Parker is the intellectual of our group. In between his periodic ravings about Beethoven and the degenerating effect of modern music, he engages us in a onesided discussion on model trains.

A l t h o u g h we are not all aware of it, we have in our midst a pioneer, a trailblazer of the old tradition. Jeff Brazier came out from the Old Country to live at Fawkner, fully expecting to have to f i g h t his way through hordes of screaming savages and dense bush to get there.

W h e n he did arrive, it was, of course, an anti-climax. The only hordes he had to fight his way through were peak hour train crowds. Don Laught could also be called a foreigner. He came to Footscray fresh from high school. Owing to the inferior educational standards of high schools, Don has to work harder to keep up to Tech. school standards.

He's almost used to it now. In the recent table tennis championships, Ian Miller and V i n Lavender won the doubles.

There was some argument about whether the honours should be shared equally. It was reported by V i n Lavender that the championships were won by V i n Lavender who, in the opinion of V i n Lavender, ranks among the top all-round sportsmen of this day. Ian or " M o o s e " , as he is known to his associates, strongly denies this and maintains that he was responsible for the victory.

Everybody is inclined to believe Vin. Something of the Old West is recaptured whenever M a x Congdon and Lance Abbey come into class. Whenever these two boys enter a room, every sound dies and the atmosphere is charged with an intensity equal only to that in " H i g h N o o n " , as they glare around ready to blast the first person foolish enough to move with one of their repeater-action 12 gauge shotguns. Then, confident that no one would dare, they saunter to their seats to discuss the latest news on huntin', shootin' and fishin' — or canoe-in' maybe. . Don Pedler, the form genius, will not be with us after this year. There is considerable relief among

the teaching staff for they will no longer be embarrassed by questions which they seem unable to answer. In contrast the form will mourn the passing of Don, because there will be no one to blame for everything that goes wrong or, for that matter, anything that happens at all.

It is a familiar sight to see Bruce Brown rushing up and down a classroom with spare engine parts flying all over the floor. Brown is one of a select group of fanatics who isolate themselves to talk about the latest designs in aero-models.

Barry " B a t " Thompson is our classroom angel who really lives up to his nickname in his a f f i n i t y for table tennis. A perpetual late-comer to classes, Barry managed to overjoy the workshop staff by wrecking another of the N u t t a l lathes.

Graham Manson " A g " . A quiet, studious type from Essendon Tech, he has great d i f f i c u l t y in keeping the door attached to his locker, lack of bolts being the main trouble. One of the few successful entrants in the mid-year exams, he hopes to repeat his successes in the finals.

Graham's books are of the mutinous type, for they are forever found wavering on window ledges or fluttering from the flagpole. " Z e k e " Zerger is a keen amateur photographer with a remarkable aptitude for successfully completing physics experiments, we think he rigs them. He is a constant companion of V i n Prestipino. Seeming to be always brushing his sleek hair, the quiet V i n is rumoured to be quite a ladies' man down Werribee way. Barry Gent comes from the Footscray Junior School and is a recent addition to the Form's aeromodelling fanatics, Brown, B. Miller, and Coulson.

He never seems to do any classwork, being too interested in his perpetual conversation with Abbey. "B.Sc." Curwood, another product of the Junior School, appears to know every fish and chip shop in Footscray and is a ready participant in anything that is going on.

Peter Coulson and Bruce Miller are a pair of ex-Prestonites who, if not engaged in describing the antics their latest model plane went through before annihilation, dispute the merits and demerits of various types of motors, planes, and anything else they can think of.

Coulson is an avid Reader's Digest fan.

Bruce is a keen scout, which fact he tried to suppress from publication.

Max Thibou is a member of the baseball team and seems to find every-day happenings either unusually humorous or infinitely boring.

He committed the dastardly crime of falling asleep in physics.

M. T H I B O U , B. BROWN 6A Firstly we must advise all readers that, through some revolutionary arithmetic progression devised by the English teachers, the form of 6A was divided into two quarters. In the opinion of Mr. Burley, we are not as good as his 6A of 1928, although^ M r . Pollock thinks that a " l i t t l e b r a i n " does no harm, providing that it has been well dusted. This " l i v i n g " quarter of 6A has many outstanding characters. The facts stated in this column are true; only the names, place-names, and dates have been altered to protect the " i n n o c e n t " .

Donald Cameron is our S.R.C. representative excelling himself in athletics, cricket, and football. Always putting his head first, he stopped a " f o o t y " boot and received a broken nose, the result — one week's absence from school. His motto is, "Better late than never, into M r . Burley's class". Don is always trying to persuade us that Fords are better than Holdens. His full time job is crashing into Steve and Chrisy whenever they are chewing (their nails).

Neil " H o r r i e " Dawson is a jazzy fiend from Brunswick, just made for the opposite sex. He says he resembles Errol Flynn only in looks, but if every one of his girls contributed one brick, we could build a mansion. Believing that to pass English you must read books, he does, but unfortunately they are not of the right type. His great sense of humour stands out in English as his witty jokes are still being puzzled over by M r . Porter.

Zoltan Janka is still right-back with the Victorian and Sunshine United, under 20, soccer teams, both of which won their competitions; but he refused to comment after the cup final against Brighton. He has recently secured a licence, but for

what we do not know. He can always be heard speaking German with Herr Porter to give variety to the English lessons. Zoltan has finally succeeded in pointing out the difference between Leber and Liebe to Pound.

Ian W i l l i a m Bernard Jones has become noted for his ramblings on racehorses, football, and Milton. He is reported to have written an immoral poem about the latter, but it has yet to pass the censors and we all know how-well it will be censored. Ian thinks that physics should be studied by physicians despite M r . Burley's constant coaching. Ian has a flare for "Redheads" and says that he will know his match when he strikes her.

Jack Nevin is one of the famous bike riding brothers. Every Saturday night he may be seen haunting the Brunswick or Coburg town halls where he "cuts a pretty good rug". Jack sports a genuine Marine haircut. He considers English an easy way for teachers to extend their wealth. Since spring has arrived Jack can be found at the Footscray gardens every lunch hour admiring the beauties of nature.

Lawrie Pound possesses a large argumentative repertoire, which includes girls, dancing, cars (especially Holdens), and yachting. A n y arguments will be interrupted by the famous, " M y brother says . . .". If it has been done or acquired the Pounds have done it or possessed it.

He has cultivated an astonishing knowledge of how to " h e l p " a maths lesson along, and holds the " m o r q u e " - a g e on being chief " d e a d beat" of the physics class.

Varis Puce holds the unrivalled supremacy in both photography and poultry farming, and we have therefore clected him as our "eggspert" in both subjects.

Varis keeps M r . Burley amazed by his unorthodox methods employed in photography, and he has proved on many occasions that an exposure meter is of little use unless light is falling on it. He also claims that he can work winders with all Kodak products, providing a direction for use is attached. His outside activities are little known, but we a - ° told that his interests are distributed all over Melbourne, and have lately been diverted to Ferntree Gully and Mornington.

John Quinlivan is best known for his inexhaustible supply of grunts and groans, which he releases in all classes.

Being a jazz fan he believes that classical music is only for those people who are equipped with hearing aids.

Robert Redman can be found drilling with the A.T.C. on Wednesday afternoons. Bob only makes his presence known in classes when he laughs at a joke to hide his embarrassment.

In physics he manages to astound us all by answering questions as to the correctness of formulae.

Donald Steeper is the engineer who could not remain civil. He is noted for his fine effort in keeping the Applied Mechanics laboratory in order, but he is never on time, except when he clocks his time card. Don was also a member of the 4 x 220 yards relay team, which ran second at the Inter. Tech. School sports. Their excuse for not winning the race was that Don left his glasses at home and did not hear the starter's gun.

This paragraph could have been left a blank because we have little information about his late activities, as he is always 6 months behind time. He excels himself in mathematics by pointing out that to and too is for, but what-four he does not know.

In heat engines on Tuesdays, John Walker is one of M r . Crocker's most intimate friends. I can easily be seen that he has a contract with Wrigley's Pty. Ltd., on the subject of chewing gum.

Pound has stated that he ought to buy a pair of false teeth, for all we can ever see are bubble gums. Every Wednesday afternoon he mysteriously disappears to talk to a young lady apprentice.

Kevin W i l d i n g has become noted for his business-like manner in ushering maidens on Education Week tours. He says he always thought the Footscray Gardens were in the school grounds.

W i l d i n g thinks that drawing classes are for drawing facts and conclusions.

6C The form's chief concern this year — beside that secondary duty of passing e x a m s — W as the introduction of a new worry for teachers. This was none other than a completely new species of gremlin. It came in all shapes and sizes, but

strangely it always dogged the footsteps of Mr. Mason. W e leave behind us one disheartened footballer, full-back or leftback, seven stomach ulcers, one apiece for our teachers, and one master who argues " p a t i e n t l y " that chemists spend too much time in the laboratory. Since he is constantly asserting this dubious fact we can by the application of logic, conclude that he ought to be in hospital.

AvAr. Ryan discards his slide rule for a shot gun, each Friday night, and boards the stage coach for Croydon and all points west. A lengthy journey this, fraught with peril at the hands of the ignorant natives in the adjacent stations of Ringwood and Lilydale. His ally in the Physics department is the imperturbable Mr. Burley, who is able to interpret Log O, and to keep up with our rapid time-table changes. Perhaps he manages this with the help of his slide rule.

Public enemy Number One is still Gentleman George Harris. George comes from Collingwood, a lovely suburb which, so he tells us, fields a football team. W e find this hard to b e l i e v e — l i k e all of his stories except the one about the door he ran into.

Grahame Charlie Blanks, also of Collingwood, boasts a perfect physique.

He won't, however, tell us what he does with it during the weekdays. Grahame's studies have suffered this year as the result of his passionate interest in a charming petite Austin 7.

A l a n Merve Howie is the form's Casanova; but what with the exams, the cost of fuel, driving people home, and that rat who told the girl's father, he has become of late a studious bachelor type.

His f i r m friend, A r t h u r " A r f e r " Marshall, has so far eluded all attempts to nickname him, follow him, and riddle him with shot. But then perhaps he is able to run and t a l k faster than most of us. Then again he might have better taste.

A late newsflash about Merve tells us that he is again engaged in his former amorous pursuits.

John Lamb and Don Macleod are two relatively unknown characters in our rogues gallery. These two emerge from deep reverie only on the mention of geographiggle. Lamb is a most uncivil

engineer, while Macleod is a prospective metallurgist with a striking interest in the girl up the road.

Towering above the rest of our infamous line is Robert " O z z i e " Osborne.

As 6 ' 4 " and 1 s t o n e Ozzie approaches, we are accustomed to hearing such comments as "Done my dough at pitch and toss", and "Physics is a censored of a subject".

Lastly comes Ian Raisin Rae, late again and grumbling about the sort situation. This better-sixth of 6C is a genius at chemistry and maths, and as a lookout for a certain female on Wednesday mornings he reigns supreme.

M U T T and JEFF 7C Plagued as we are with examinations, teachers, indistinguishable smells, and regular pep talks on the evils of procrastination, we have retained our genius for doing as little work as possible. You can usually find us working aciduously in Room 19 under the baleful stare of B.J., who advises us that all that is needed to pass exams is to study eleven hours a night.

We shall now introduce ourselves in order of infamy. The first to receive a mention is John McDowell, or as we know him, Yehoudi the Bohemian barber starver. See photo in Pertinent Pars. John has saved his money at the expense of his hair and is now the proud owner of a vintage car. His main topics of conversation are his car and how much study he hasn't done. During dinner times he leads five interested students through the clothes shops of Footscray, where he tries on all sports coats and promises faithfully to return with the money next Thursday. W i t h all this he is still a f i r m favourite with all teachers, although he generally gets into heated arguments over Physics with Mr. J. The next member of the form is that boy from the Carlton Area, Graham Walter Carmichael. He is a very popular member of the form when he is able to take us to dances in his father's car.

Every weekend he retires to the seclusion of Barwon Heads, to go surfing, or that's what he tells us. W e t h i n k it was

more than the surf that made him put the part back in his hair, but we wish he would have at least two shaves a month instead of his usual one. The same goes for Ross Cecil Henderson, who, besides belonging to the great unwashed, is a part car owner, i.e., he owns part of a car. He hopes to get a motor soon and is usually found discussing the relative merits and demerits of Ford V 8 engines.

A p a r t from car engines his favourite topic is his girl friend, and after any dance all you can get out of him is, " H o w was she, e h ! " " N o t bad, is she?"; and so without embarrassing anyone we should like to tell you, Cedric, we t h i n k she's okay.

The quiet member of the form is Barry Whopper Lane, whose Saturday night and Sunday morning exploits, related to us in the security of the balance room, astound us all. He seems such a nice boy at school. It is believed, mainly by himself, that he is a sensational baseballer; although this was by no means proved during the school series. He assures us he was only saving himself for Saturdays, when he is bat boy for North Melbourne fifths.

Talking of baseballers introduces us to the famous home-run hitter, Barry McGregor.

This intellectual student emerged from his books to hit two homeruns for the school, a feat that had to be seen to be believed. A p a r t from hitting home-runs, Mac takes most of his notes on the back of his hand and in other people's books, where he signs himself as FOO. Last, but not least, is A r t h u r (Splasher) Ottery. A r t h u r is the

A r t h u r also has the distinction of having the lowest number of experiments marked in Physics I IB, a fact which M r . Burley deeply disapproves. A r t h u r can often be heard lamenting that he could only lift lb. at weight-lifting last night, instead of his usual 4 lb., because his shoulder was sore.

Before we go, we would like to thank all teachers who have given their time and energy to helping us this year. W e hope to see some of them again next year, when we repeat Inorg. Chem. III. BUDDE'S BUDDIES FORM NOTES 8A It is now about four years since this school unwarily opened its doors to an assortment of little strangers, each of whom has become a little stranger in the fullness of time. During this period we have secured a precarious grip on a vast amount of technical knowledge, and kept in touch with a considerable volume of hanging subjects; some ill-disposed persons have been known to refer to us as the subjects for hanging.

A n y day of the week this carefree band can be seen, by those who share Superman's paranormal visual powers, conscientiously pursuing their studies, some of us even getting close to catching up with them. If we don't always overflow with enthusiasm for Hydraulics Prac., it can at least be said, that our opinions are fluid, just like the experiment that was unenthusiastically received in a Metallurgy class.

The form is seen in its most typical state during drawing classes, when everyone is present except those who have plausible reasons for being elsewhere.

By 10 o'clock, when Cody has at last turned up, Bob will have slipped out for a haircut or to collect some dry cleaning, and he in t u r n relieves someone else who has to go and negotiate about a pie.

The steadily mounting opulence of 8A is indicated by the increasing volume of

unsteady mechanical wrecks being driven, or goaded, to school.

These mobile suicide packs are discussed, compared and lovingly dwelt upon, their endearing faults weighed against those of less promising offspring. A common feature of all, however, is the need for frequent clutch adjustment, which is most often done at night, cn the remote highways.

A l t h o u g h most of us will be absorbed — drip by drip — into industry next year, we shall all remain loyal to Footscray, and some of us will demonstrate this by their constant attendance at night classes.

M Y FIRST D A Y The holidays were over and I had just entered through the " E x i t O n l y " into the School. In the quadrangle were welldefined groups of boys from the different Junior Techs. A f t e r wandering f r o m the Brunswick to the Collingwood group I finally found my right one. Most of the old faces were there, and the conversations were continuations of those begun on the last day of our school year at Preston. Suddenly a horrible wailing was heard, someone said it was a siren.

I noticed everyone moving in the same direction, so I naturally followed.

See! Some shoulders moving edgeways Through the doorway of the classroom, See! A brave both strong and learned.

Whisper — " W h o is this my comrades?"

I was led into a large hall and eventually found a vacant seat. A f t e r the usual talks and introductions we were graded into our respective forms. I was amazed at some of the weird-looking characters, little realizing that they would become my class-mates. W e were then loaded up with numerous forms, insurance, enrolment and so on, with, "Sign Here", and " I f not, why not?" on them. A f t e r adding up the cost of my books and fees, I debated w i t h myself whether to pawn my old school badge or not. I'm still debating this question.

A f t e r we had been grouped we were taken on a tour of inspection by wiselooking serious young men. I have since deduced that this must have been a spasmodic burst of seriousness, after seeing their behaviour at the lockers.

However, I must force myself to thank them for a job well done, as in that day I saw more of the school than I have in all the months since then. A f t e r this we had a break, and we concluded that our next engagement would be the longexpected meal. Many wagers were made, varying from cigarette butts, to pennies, on what the meal was going to ge. Some optimists tipped roast pork, while the pessimists predicted 15 minutes' chew of the one piece of gum. Fortunately this was not the case, as we had a very pleasant and appropriate meal of cakes, sausage rolls and drinks. I had the good fortune to be near Mr. Palmer, whose sparkling wit kept those near him laughing all the time. (That should be worth a pass in Workshop Technology.) A f t e r a few more short speeches we were at last allowed to go home.

Thus I became a fully qualified engineer, at least in my own imaginaiton. I am now beginning to realize, nearly twelve months later, that I am only beginning to scratch a very hard surface of knowledge. Actually I doubt whether I've even marked it as yet.

T H E A R T OF M A K I N G For those who are not well "versed" in this genteel art, this essay aims to be a five minute text. If perchance you can't write poetry after reading this enlightened work, then at least you will be able to understand why I can't either.

The first essential is to obtain a poetic licence. I have not been able to find out much about this particular requirement as there is general secrecy among poets on the subject. Of its value, however, there is no doubt for it officially authorizes the possessor to misuse his language to a way which not even a five-time-failed Matric. Expression candidate would even dream of doing Having obtained your poetic licence you can proceed to make use of the poetic devices which I will now enumerate.

Firstly it is permissible to modify the form of a word to suit the requirements of the poem. Most people will not notice, some because they can't spell as well as you can, others will think it a printer's error, and the rest are not worth worrying about anyhow.

Said the Cannibal King of Woodunga, I go for the girls in my slumba, W i t h meticulate ease, I boil them in cheese, A n d hot dogs they make without numba.

But don't make the mistake of thinking that you need any fancy knowledge of English to write poetry.

Chaucer couldn't spel for nutz. Look at t h i s — extract from " T h e Knight's T a l e " .

Ther were also of Martes divisioun, The barbour, and the bocher and the smith T h a t forgeth sharpe swerdes on his stith.

By the way, I personally find it very comforting to know that there were "bochers" even in Chaucer's day.

Occasionally one has an impressive experience which arouses a poetic ardour to record it in beautiful language for the sake of posterity. This happened to me during a recent Assembly, while a certain distinguished guest speaker was

moving a revolving blackboard, with the following result: W h a t type of brain is his that thinks Or even which has thunk That elephants eat caviar Or " W o c k a is a Punk".

Another device used by poets of note, both to show their linguistic skill and to f i l l in some awkward spots, is to incorporate a iine in some foreign tongue.

I can recommend its use in the latter case. Of course, it doesn't matter what the phrase means, but to be safe I suggest you write it in Abyssinian, Patagonian, Christmas-lslandish, or some other such language. A t a loss for both thought and rhyme in the following poem, I substituted a line of Dutch.

The swaying firs beat silent time, Unto the rhythm of the wind, A n d as I at the table dine, The mellow sunlight filters in, A n d then the thought came to me briefed, Dat m i j n hond lange ooren heeft.* If you are feeling devoid of ideas, you can always be sure of gleaning some choice ones from reading the poems of the more conventional poets. Occasionally you will light upon a poem t h a t your instructor has murdered in class. Take "Sea Fever" for example. One look at this poem produces acute allergic symptoms in me — something like seasickness. But don't despair if this happens to you; just patch the poem up a little like this.

ODE TO 10 O'CLOCK CLOSING I must go down to the pub again, to the lonely Whisky and Rye, Then all I'll ask is a tall steer and a star to ship her by, A n d the rum's kick and the barmaid's song and my white hand's shaking, A n d a grey mist on my mate's face when 10 o'clock's breaking.

Farewell to Mr. Murray A t the end of the year it's hard, as a rule, to get a big flock of teachers together unless there is some degree of covert compulsion, social obligation, or a very strong attraction.

On Wednesday evening, December 14, the latter motive operated to bring more than a hundred teachers from remote places like Ballarat, Castlemaine, Yallourn, Preston, and Newport, as well as from urban centres, to say farewell to Mr. George M u r r a y who is retiring after 40 years of service, 36 of them spent at Footscray.

Some record of Mr. Murray's career, and recognition of his work in this school is published elsewhere in the magazine, so it will be best to speak first of the brighter side of the evening. The entertainment was of very high quality, for we had several songs by the Sun Aria winner Mr. Len Delaney, whose rich voice was heard to advantage in a number of graceful ballads.

In effective contrast, on another peak of excellence, we heard some affecting songs of another type sung by Mr. Jack Miles, one in particular being a highly educational account of the occupational privileges enjoyed by those who are called upon to clean "winders."

Few teachers have had the opportunity of obtaining such a clear exposition of the matters handled, and it is likely that some of the allusions were beyond the reach of our chaste minds.

A dramatic performance by Mr. Jack Pitt entitled " O n l y a Meal Girl, or her Romance was punctured when she gave him A w l " , in which he played all the parts and the scenery, proved that there is no visible limit to his versatility, and that "beneath those tattered nylons there may beat a heart of gold".

Extempore reminiscences — some of them containing more than a nucleus of t r u t h — by several of Mr. Murray's older friends related odd facts in his long career as a teacher, and at the same time showed the deep affection he has inspired in all of those who have known him well.

A t a serious level Mr. Bsanland spoke effectively of the valuable work that George Murray had done for our school, and Mr. Brooks, representing the Department, pointed out that much of the high prestige enjoyed by Footscray was to be attributed to the tireless devotion to the interests of the boys that Mr. M u r r a y had shown throughout his long stay with us.

As a small token of our deep regard for him, Mr. Beanland made the presentation of an elegant watch, which will not however keep better time than George, who over many years has always been there to greet us — not necessarily with enthusiasm — as we arrive towards or around or on either side of 8.50 every morning.

We shall miss him. The magazine will reflect his absence, for he has been responsible for many of the unsigned contributions that appear in its first few pages. These contributions were always among the few in which we have not had to displace the commas, rectify the syntax, or clarify the sense.

It is not widely known that he is no mere mathematician. Among the open secrets of his complex career is the fact that he is a competent and very well informed student of literature.

He has even taught English, which of course does not add any proof to the preceding statement, and has an active and alert mind.

This, we know, will enable him to get the best out of the many years of placid retirement that we wish him, and we hope that when he returns from his t r i p overseas, he will come among us as often as he can.

D U N C A N M c V E A N is the longest suffering of the chemists and seems likely to pass something this year. He is energetic on all committees concerned with our social welfare, especially when there is need for prolonged deliberation with the office staff.

N O R M A N OVERSON — You might expect a prefect and student teacher to be the original pattern of exemplary behaviour. But if you do you show poor judgment, as well as ignorance of his dual purpose pea-shooter, self adjusting thermomatic cooking-pen, and his own conviction that chemistry has deprived the world of a brilliant f i l m star.

RON W I L K I N S maintains that he's worse at more things than most people, which is a very d i f f i c u l t proposition. But there's no real need to puzzle it out because he finishes his course this year without failing or getting a supp in anything. The entry of this German expert into National Service may well cause the Security Service to knit their brows: but Ron will continue to browse through mysterious subjects like palaeontology.

HAROLD LEPP — A t least one instructor claims merit for having endured Harold's puns for five years and kept his temper if not his hair. He — Harold, of course — is a lady's man, and we infer from the length of certain Kalodorous letters smelt out, and the steadily increasing number of suits, that he might soon relinquish his amateur and single status.

RON JARRETT is chiefly self-educated and often laments that he can't understand his teacher, who imposes en him a novel routine of work at night and sleep during the day. Sometimes it's as late as 10 a.m. before he is comfortably bedded down in room 6.

I A N STRINGER entertains the conspicuously odd notion that study is a pleasant hobby. Incredibly intelligent questions he asks in class are a by-product of his all night vigils. His even more conspicuous means of transport was recently ordered off the roads by a vigilant member of the Force entrusted with ensuring public safety.

KEITH CREE derives some of his popularity from the possession of a car, which enables some of us to save one form of energy and expend it elsewhere in another form. Something peculiar in his creed, or exceptional about the school, prompts him to arrive early and put in hours of overtime, for which he must get some kind of payment.

NEIL M A X F I E L D — Although he is a citizen of Rosanna, Maxie has managed to acquire a veneer of civilization during his stay with us.

He has advanced to the possession of an A model Ford, having dispensed with his venerable Austin on legal advice. The policeman who suggested this move also recommended the acquisition of a licence, preferably a comprehensive one covering driving and marriage.

M U R R A Y N E W M A N is captain of the cricket eleven and a notable footballer to boot. This is a description, not an invitation. Scrouge mingles with the Upper Crust — made of dough — and has become a fine dancer as well as a connoisseur of cocktails.

RAY GILBERTSON, the M i c k , is a working model designed to publicise the body-building virtues of the Gilbertson sausage. His stage performances are solid, as they ought to be, considering the class time he devotes to rehearsals.

NEIL CONGDON, Bonga, is noted for the conscientious way in which he works strictly to his own special time-table, which corresponds at no point to the inferior one drawn up by the school. He projects his mind into the classes while his body remains uninvolved.

ALBERT NICHOLS is the school's most active used-car dealer and chief electrical draughtsman. Some of his designs are ideal in the sense that they don't apply to any real or possible world but tney have the function of abstract art.

GRAEME T A Y L O R — W h e n not attending opening nights at the National Theatre and in general patronizing all manifestations of the higher life, Wowser devotes much of his time in the vain endeavour to convert his constant companion. On the unshakeable evidence of his own admissions, Graeme is a superb dramatic artist, and evidently an avid reader of library books.

J O H N FRANZI is now finally established — against negligible opposition — as the brain of the form. Johnnie Ray's ray of brilliance doesn't always shine in all the maths classes. His chief hobbies are correcting instructors' mistakes — these, of course, are made deliberately to develop our self-expression — and writing original lab reports. Showing sweet young things round the dark room during Education Week was one of his well executed head prefectorial tasks I A N C O L E M A N is one of the Electronic Lab Boys and is thus able to spend some of his paid time cultivating one of his hobbies. Collie was conspicuous — by contrast with the white background — on the snow trip, when his reserved and refined behaviour drew the attention of all who prize such things, and this doesn't include all of us.

FRANK M U R P H Y modestly claims to be the school's prime comedian, and instructors have been known to smile wearily and tolerantly at some of his more cultivated jokes. His first attempt at recording selections of his humour failed as a result of the high degree of sensitivity among metallurgists.

FRED HARRIS is said to be the proud owner of six eyes, all of which are necessary to find the material on which he bases his strict and elevated moral principles.

Equipped with these, he was very well qualified for his position as chaperone to the couples sitting in the back of the bus on the snow trip.

BOB R A M S A Y — R e c e n t l y chosen by a poll of instructors as " T h e boy whose drowning I should shed fewest tears over". Bob has countered on two occasions by trying to drown the whole form.

Constant pursuit by the police has at last convinced him that speed limits and pedestrian crossings are more than conversational topics.

Loss of his left arm would in no way impair his driving technique, while loss of his head might even improve his chances at the exams.

The Headmaster's Message On coming to Footscray Technical School, the first and strongest impression one gets is of a splendid building, incorporating all the best ideas of modern school design and with ample playing space at the back door.

Compared with the older technical schools situated close to the city of Melbourne, Footscray is indeed fortunate. In some of these schools, playing space is so limited that there is not sufficient room to play even the quietest and simplest games. I wonder whether we are inclined to take for granted the facilities that have been provided by far-seeing planners, and to forget that we owe a duty to those generations of school boys who will attend this school in the years to come — to pass on to them these buildings and grounds in such a condition that they will be proud of them and proud to claim as their own the Footscray Technical School.

Every boy in the school can help by doing all in his power to protect and preserve, and where possible, improve, what we have in trust.

But a school is much more than an imposing collection of buildings and grounds. It is much more than a striking list of scholastic successes. The success of a school is in part dependent on these things, but the real measure of its success is in the character of those students who have passed through it. If the school has helped to inculcate ideals of integrity, honesty, courage, diligence, and tolerance, then, indeed, it can claim to be successful.

These qualities do not come like gifts dropped in our hands. They must be cultivated, and nurtured.

Courage may be developed on the sports ground or in the class room when one has to face a d i f f i c u l t situation.

Integrity, honesty and tolerance must be practised in all our relations with the school and with other students. Opportunities for leadership frequently arise in school, and diligence is achieved only by constant practice.

M y message to the students of this school may be put very simply.

Here you have an opportunity to acquire knowledge that will help you in life, and an even greater opportunity to build a character that will f i t you for the fullest enjoyment of life.

Seize the opportunity now, and your reward will be great.

Christian Education This year has witnessed the inauguration of a scheme which, in a few years, could exercise a profound effect not only upon our system of education but upon the lives of thousands of students who graduate from technical schools.

Thompson, Director of the Council for Christian Education in Schools; M r . C. H. Beanland, Principal of the School; and finally Mr. Morgan, focus of attention.

The speakers, in turn, stressed the importance of the whole enterprise and expressed their sincere wishes for M r .

Morgan's success. The newly-appointed chaplain responded with warmth and gratitude.

He spoke of men, men of character and resolution, men with whom he had been privileged to associate, men who, in their frail human way, bore the unmistakable characteristics of Christ, the Man. Success of his mission with the Footscray Technical School would finally be gauged in the numbers of students who, moulded in this ideal pattern, would fearlessly carry their convictions and Christian example into national life.

A n enjoyable afternoon tea, with which the memorable occasion concluded, was provided by members of the Mothers' Club, who were thanked for their services

by Cr. Kinna, of the School Council.

Despite shortages of buildings, material and money, it would be generally admitted that our education system has adequately catered for technical students in regard to scientific training and physical well-being.

However, throughout the decades, the spiritual constituent so essential to complete and dynamic manhood remained to be awakened and developed.

W i t h the introduction of a full-time chaplain service to three Victorian technical colleges, the Council for Christian Education in Schools has set in motion the educative process whereby our future citizens will be suitably equipped to face a troubled world. The dictum: " M e n s sana in corpore sano" pertains not exclusively to intellectually and physical development, but inherently demands in the educated man a healthy and wellbalanced moral attitude. It is true that in a modern world, which calls for men of action, greatest necessity lies in the sphere of living Christianity.

It is precisely to satisfy this need that the school chaplain service owes its existence.

As in recent years, the school was open for inspection during part of Education Week in August. This had the twofold purpose of enabling parents to see the type of work done by their boys and to acquaint them with the opportunities available to Technical School students.

Both units of the school were open, Ballarat Rd. on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Nicholson St. on Thursday, August 18.

W h i l e over 7,000 visitors passed through the Ballarat Rd. school, relatively few went to Nicholson St., the senior section of the school. This is regrettable since it is to this section that junior students will eventually graduate, either as apprentices doing day-time training or as f u l l time students doing engineering diploma courses, and parents would learn

much from a visit to this section of the school.

The Ballarat Rd. display was very comprehensive and did give some insight into practically all courses covered at the school and much favourable comment was heard on the high standard of work.

The Hobbies and Model Trains Section was, as always, the source of pleasure to many visitors, both old and young alike.

Really the ingenuity and diversity ot interests of fifteen year old boys is amazing. The opportunity for adults to interest themselves in such pursuits is present in the school in the various hobby classes in carpentry, cabinet-making, art and craft, dressmaking and millinery.

The wonderful work of the Mothers' Club was evident throughout the display, their various stalls and afternoon tea providing welcome variety for tired feet.

VOCATIONAL

GUIDANCE

In co-operation with the English and Social Studies Department, Mr. W. Cockett took over the position of careers adviser in the second term of this year.

This work is very important and entails giving students some indication of the wide range of available jobs, using as a basis the special booklet, "Choosing Your Career". As well, the Rothwell Interest Test is given to students in Form 3, and from the results Interest Profiles are compiled.

By these methods it is possible to determine fairly accurately the type of employment most suitable for the particular boy.

Finally, visits are arranged to industrial establishments so boys can see for themselves the work carried out in various industries. Students in Forms 3 and 4, and sometimes parents, are interviewed to discuss the choice of occupation. Many students engaged on project work also took advantage of the " j o b i n f o r m a t i o n " sheets in developing projects.

As a supplement to the very important work listed above the weekly social period was inaugurated during first term when students were addressed by representatives of various industries and professions.

Careers advisers cannot undertake the actual placing of boys in occupations but the school is frequently able to suggest suitable contacts to boys seeking work.

A l l boys starting work are strongly recommended to become apprenticed to a recognised trade or profession or where the boy has the ability, to continue on to higher education.

George Bathie, obiit 7.6.55 Parents, members of staff and students were shocked upon hearing that Mr. George Bathie had died after a brief illness early in June.

Coming from Preston Technical School in 1951, Mr. ___ Bathie, originally an instructor i n the Cabinet-making, Carpentry and Joinery Dept., took charge of the Instrumental Drawing Dept. as successor to Mr. H. Morrow.

Of jovial disposition, Mr. Bathie possessed those characteristics which stamped him as a Christian and a gentleman. Patient in the extreme, he was a sincere and helpful friend of those who were fortunate in making his acquaintance. His broad mental outlook received practical expression in the extensive field of Social Service, and his premature death was sorely felt by many of his associates in educational and social spheres.

NOTES

This year the Air Training Corps got away to a good start having two cadet sergeants and two corporals. The total number of cadets was sixty. The year has been f u l l of interest, highlights being a trip to the Commonwealth A i r c r a f t Corporation's factory and the official attendance at the Shrine on Anzac Day and again during A i r Force Week.

General training camps were held during the school vacations at R.A.A.F. stations, Laverton, Point Cook, East Sale and Ballarat. A t these camps the cadets observed all the different aspects of service life and were given flights in aircraft. Cadets were also taken to Point Cook to see the trooping of the Queen's Colours.

Other important events included the annual athletic competition at Northcote and the swimming carnival at Richmond baths. In the latter part of the year the squadron's boxing and wrestling competitions were held, followed by rifle practice and competition at Williamstown range.

The final event of the year was the drill competition and presentation of trophies by A i r Marshal Sir George Jones, at Laverton.

To be eligible to join the A.T.C. it is necessary to be fourteen years of age by 1956.

CORPS

Under the guidance of Mr. Cronin, to us Lieut. Cronin, the sea cadets have had a very successful year, commencing with the ten days camp at Mildura in January.

This camp was enjoyed by all who attended.

The programme included many interesting trips to the vineyards and wineries. The grapes were not really ripe but that didn't deter us. As well, we enjoyed a f i f t y mile trip up the M u r r a y on a motor launch kindly loaned by Mr. Winton, who also let us use his dance hall for a social evening.

Among the more formal ceremonies which we attended during the year was the handing over of the fleet by A d m i r a l Collins to A d m i r a l Dowling on board the aircraft carrier, H.M.A.S. Sydney, in February. A f t e r the inspection we were taken on a tour of inspection of the ship and were told all about the aircraft and ammunition used.

In October we attended an interesting and very important function to commemorate " T r a f a l g a r Day". This takes the form of a display put on by the Navy each year.

W e also attended another important function in October — the handing over of the colours by Sir Dallas Brooks to the M i l d u r a unit at Government House, Melbourne.

You can well see that our year was really interesting. The unit is open to all boys over 14 years of age.

W e attend the Port Melbourne Naval Base (H.M.A.S. Lonsdale) once a week and are transported by bus free of charge.

The syllabus consists of boat work (rowing and sailing), bandaging, knotting, rifle drill and shooting practice at Williamstown range.

The Junior School has repeated successes in winning the A . N . A . garden competition, restricted to schools in our primary inspectorate.

Before the assembly of students on Monday morning, July 25, Mr. Smallwood, formerly Senior Ex-President of the Footscray branch of the Australian Natives Association, presented a framed picture to the Principal, M r . Beanland.

The latter responded on behalf of the teachers and students, and thanked the donors for the g i f t — a very attractive oil by John Rowell. The g i f t now adorns the wall of the Library where it is readily accessible to all students.

The school body appreciates the painstaking work done by the lads under the careful supervision and expert knowledge of M r . Carson, the school gardener.

The Library It could be said that the Library has made an auspicious beginning.

Gradually it is becoming part of everyday school life as more and more teachers and students receive assistance from it. You may be inclined to say that the room is not all that it could be, but remember that the material that is in the library is more important than the building itself. Nor is it meant only for instruction, as it should be able to occupy your leisure time and even provide you with amusement.

In cold figures the Library now contains 1,700 volumes, of which approximately 600 are new this year.

Over £400 has been spent on reading material this year, and this is a figure that few schools could equal.

But to t u r n to the books themselves— W h o are the contemporary library favourites? Capt. Marryat, Percy Westerman, P. C. Wren, Herbert Strang and other once popular writers don't leave the shelves very often these days at all.

On the other hand, most librarians are sick of the sound of Biggies and his many exploits. Indeed he's never at home for very long and to interview him you require an appointment. Then, of course, there are Tarzan, Simon Black and many others worthy of fame. Surprisingly, Mary Grant Bruce and Enid Blyton are quite popular amongst the young and not so young, whilst M a r k Twain and Jules Verne retain many fans. On the number of times borrowed the following would be the most popular in the fiction section—

O L D BOYS WE'RE P R O U D OF Alby Saunders: Alby attended the Footscray Technical School from 1936 to 1939. He started racing in 1938 as an amateur and amongst his successes was the Victorian Long Distance Championship.

He turned professional in 1946 and has since built an impressive list of important victories.

In 1953 he won the Australian and Victorian Championships and the Victorian 150 M i l e Championship. His track and road successes have been too numerous to mention but include fastest time honours in the Warrnambool Road Race on more than one occasion. A t the age of 34 Alby is still riding from scratch in open company.

To young cyclists Alby says, " H a r d training and clean living are essential to success. If you train hard many pleasures must be sacrificed but there is no easy way to the t o p " .

Bill Hutchinson: Bill was a student here from 1937 to 1938. He is regarded as

one of the most accomplished footballers to have ever played League football. He commenced playing with Essendon in 1942 and has played 260 games.

He represented Victoria regularly between 1946 and 1954 and was captain of Essendon from 1951 to 1955. The highlight of his brilliant career was his brilliant Brownlow Medal win in 1953.

To young footballers Bill says, "Be possessed of the determination to succeed, regardless of the obstacles which no doubt will present themselves throughout your career. Obviously ability is essential, but ability without determination does not mean a thing.

It is the player who has this quality who is able to f i g h t back from seemingly hopeless positions, never a d m i t t i n g defeat until the final bell. Never allow yourself to be unduly upset over failures.

Keep in mind an old but very true saying that the man who never made a mistake, never made a n y t h i n g " .

WANDILIGONG In September, 34 Fourth Form boys, accompanied by Messrs. Pitt and Forster spent a week at Wandiligong. The party left by bus from the school at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 12.

The route was along Sydney Rd. to the Hume Highway to Seymour where the m i l k bar had its best day's business for weeks. Lunch was taken on the bus and the next stop was Wangaratta where the party spent an hour inspecting Bruck Mills, one of the largest rayon yarn factories in Australia.

Eventually we reached our destination and were allotted accommodation in two-man huts.

The camp also contained a mess hall, recreation room, showers and a drying house. A t 7 p.m. school was held for half an hour to discuss the day's interests. Lights were out at 9.30 p.m. but the camp was very noisy, much to the teachers' discomfort.

After breakfast on Tuesday we journeyed to Myrtleford, via Bright, to inspect the flax mill. Here flax is processed and the fibre sent to rope works in Melbourne for finishing. A f t e r lunch

at the camp we visited a derelict gold mine at Wandiligong.

W e also visited the Wandiligong school, and while the head teacher was telling us something of the early gold mining days, M r . Forster was busy playing w i t h his eight and five year old daughters.

As we returned early to camp we had some time for fishing, at which Mr. Forster and Barry Skinner were successful.

On Wednesday we drove to M t . Beauty and spent the whole day inspecting the S.E.C. hydro electric scheme. From M t .

Beauty we went to and inspected the surface installations and tunnel above the No. 4 Power Station which is 500 feet below ground.

W e then went on to Clover Dam at Clover Flat, and finally to Bogong on the shores of Lake Guy for lunch. A f t e r walking through the Junction Dam we drove to No. 3 Power Station which we were permitted to inspect thor-

oughly. A f t e r we returned to M t . Beauty, Sidney Brooks and Peter Podolak moved a vote of thanks to our guide for the day, Mr. Roy Morgan.

That evening eight boys from the Bright High School visited us in response to an invitation from the camp committee.

Competitive table tennis, hookey and other games were played and lights were out at 10 p.m.

On Thursday, Mr. Jim Brown, the Bright officer of the Forests Commission visited us and gave us an interesting talk on pine plantations and advice on bush fire dangers and prevention. A f t e r the lecture we were driven to the timber mills at Bright where we saw the various milling processes, the unusual method of unloading logs and the finished pine walls, furniture and flooring in the mill canteen. A f t e r lunch we went to Harrietville where we saw the largest dredge in the Southern Hemisphere.

It weighs 2,000 tons and is now being dismantled to be sent to Malaya. A f t e r "School" that evening an entertainer visited the camp and a concert took place.

As soon as breakfast on Friday was finished, we boarded the bus and drove back through Porepunkah and out up the Buffalo road. We stopped at the Eurobin Falls where some boys took photos.

We then continued on up to the M t .

Buffalo chalet. W h e n we arrived everyone became involved in a high pitched snow fight. Some of us also went sledding on sheets of galvanised iron. A f t e r a barbecue lunch we drove to Dingley Dell ski run where the snow was three feet deep. Bill Clarke and a few others tried skiing on one leg whilst the remainder had some fun on a toboggan I found in the bushes. W h e n we returned to the camp everyone was sopping wet with melted snow but we were happy, for it

had been the most interesting trip of all.

Permission was given for the party to attend the pictures in Bright that night.

Lights were out at 1 1.30 p.m. but a few sneaked in even later than that.

Saturday morning saw us up early to prepare for our return to Melbourne. The mattresses and pillows were returned and luggage was loaded back on to the bus by 7.30 a.m. Breakfast was then served and presentations were then made to the three cooks, the camp orderly or " P o p " as he preferred to be called, and to Mr. Duke, the bus driver. A f t e r a quiet trip back to Melbourne we arrived at approximately 2.30 p.m.

Every member of the party considered the trip a wonderful experience and will talk about it for many a day.

T H E SCHOOLS W E C A M E F R O M Some of our students teli us of their school life in Britain.

Keith Wright, 2 M : Before I came to Australia I attended a Senior Modern School in England. Most of the subjects taught were similar to those taught here but in other ways the school was very different.

There were no lockers and the books and writing equipment were supplied free of charge. Meals were supplied at 3 / 6 per week in the school dining hall. W e had holidays for three days in October, at half term we had eight weeks and at Xmas we had from eight to ten days.

Our school was divided into Houses and we had all the same school functions as we have here. Although I like this school I think I would prefer the one I left in England.

Robert Smithers, 2 N : The school I attended before migrating to Australia was in Glasgow, Scotland A t the age of five I attended the primary school and remained for seven years. I passed my qualifying examination for higher education at the age of twelve and was enrolled for a five year academic course. This was a higher form of education than is obtained in Australia. W e had very little training for a trade, the only trades taught being woodwork and technical drawing. Languages took the place of other practical subjects. M y first school started at 9.15 a.m. and finished at 3 p.m. whilst my senior school started at 9.15 a.m. and finished at 4.15 p.m.

Our summer holidays lasted six weeks and commenced in the last week in June.

As well we had two weeks at Easter and Xmas.

Peter Coventry, 3B: I first attended school in Liverpool, England.

I began at the age of five, the school hours being from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The summer holidays lasted for six weeks, with three weeks at Xmas and two at Easter.

In the sixth grade, fret-work and other handicrafts were taught and we had two periods of Science. Every Friday three or four periods were spent on plays and films. The school uniform was not com-

pulsory but could be obtained at the school.

Throughout the year doctors checked our health and cleanliness. The school provided pupils with all books and there was a school canteen where children could obtain a hot meal for 8d. or 9d. per day.

I would say that the schools in England were of a slightly higher standard than are Australian schools.

GREAT

SINGER Geoffrey Short, star of the Talent Quest, gives some sound advice to wouldbe warblers.

A f t e r enumerating the varied types of singers he has met in his eventful career, Geoff bashfully admitted that most people really considered him very good and that he was particularly competent at causing the female sex to swoon.

In fact, as soon as he croons they swoon.

He describes himself as a "Boo boo singer".

But let Geoff eat his own onions. " T h e most important thing to remember, when you begin to sing, is to have a clear throat. This can be achieved and at the same time rust can be kept down to a m i n i m u m if high-octaine petrol is gargled night and day.

It is not advisable to smoke immediately after a gargle.

But enough of idol chatter.

If you wish to become a really famous singer and earn a place in the next Talent Quest you must practice diligently, my friends.

Practice scales until you can scale fish with your eyes shut.

Sing everywhere and whenever possible. Don't let boos or catcalls deter you. Every great singer has to put up with such enthusiasms and even I encountered it once or twice. The most popular rehearsal place is the bathroom, under a refreshing hot shower where one can give f u l l rein to one's vocal powers.

I am happy to help aspiring young singers in the hope that a small measure of my fame and success will come to some of y o u " .

Footscray won their first football premiership since 1939 when the " U team convincingly defeated Swinburne in the Grand Final 6.10 to 5.8.

Displaying better team-work, and playing excellent negative football against the wind, the team, without three star players, gave a first-class exhibition of school-boy football.

In earlier finals, the " Z ' s " narrowly defeated Geelong Tech. by 10.5 to 8.9, lost to Swinburne 6.11 to 10.4 and defeated Brunswick 8.6 to 5.11.

The Metropolitan Junior Technical Schools Sports Association Cup was presented to the Captain, Doug Kellett, by Mr. Dabb of the Technical Schools' Amateur Sports Union, and Doug, at a ceremony at the school later handed it on to the Headmaster, Mr. Green.

HOME A N D HOME MATCHES Both the " A " and " Z " teams showed improved performances in the district competition matches, after practice matches against University and Williamstown High Schools.

The " A " team had wins over Essendon, South Melbourne and Sunshine and drew with Sunshine, while the " Z ' s " suffered their only defeat against South Melbourne.

Final district points were: Footscray " Z " 21; South Melbourne 16^; Footscray " A " , Essendon 10^; Sunshine 1 Ian Davies captained the " A " team.

Ian Coates and Geoff Balfour were selected in the Interstate Under 14 school-boys' side, who were beaten by the " Z ' s " in a mid-season practice match.

not commence until June, we arranged practice matches with nearby schools and after four such matches we were satisfied that it would take a very good team to head us.

The first set-back to our premiership hopes occurred when we played Preston.

This game was played in continuous rain which made our ground as slippery as a skating rink and ended in a scoreless draw. Players on both sides could not stand up long enough to control the ball successfully, but the Preston right back played a wonderful game in the bad conditions.

Richmond settled our premiership hopes when they scored the only goals kicked against us throughout the season to beat us 3-2.

In a very good match Richmond kicked with the wind in the first half and scored three goals, two of which were scored brilliantly and in a manner not usually expected of schoolboys. W e fought back strongly in the second half but, with Richmond concentrating on defence, we could only manage two goals.

As we were not premiers in our section we were not able to defend the Dunkling Shield which we won last year. W e were not very happy with this situation but as the arrangements for the Dunkling Shield

The competition between the schools was dropped this year but arrangements were made for us to play matches against nearby schools.

Only a few matches were played, one being against Essendon High School whom we defeated 4-0.

This was the school's first win for two years.

The line-up for the 1955 season was: " C h i c k e n " Davidson, vice-captain and centre forward, a dominating player throughout the season.

The backs " M u g g s y " McVickers and Lou Rees, combining with the goalie " T a l k i e " Dalton, made all our opponents fight for their goals. " M a c k a " McGowan and Barry Reeves, both first year players, with Dave Ellis, Norm Casey, Barry Ogier, Brian Wapshott and " G o o f y " W a r i n g , formed an effective forward line. out some harsh words when anything went wrong. The reserves were George Powell, " F a t " Barling, " R u d y " Valstar, Ian Bell and Bill Plant. W h e n needed they played with tenacious spirit. Peter Webb, also on the training list had to withdraw because of an unfortunate eye injury which, incidentally, was not caused by any of " M u g g s y ' s " mighty drives from the back line. Last but not least, Mr. Addicoat should be congratulated on his expert coaching throughout the year.

A l t h o u g h we only won one match out of five we had a successful and enjoyable season.

RUGBY The rugby team commenced training two weeks before the first match which was really closer to the end of the season than the beginning. Most of the players had never played before and for their first game played intelligent rugby, but our first opponents, Scotch College, were more experienced and we were defeated 14-3. The second and last match was played at Scotch College in very wet conditions and again we performed well but were beaten again, 11-0.

Our thanks are due to the Footscray Rugby Union Football Club for sponsoring us, to all those who assisted in our training, especially to M r . T. Taranto, who acted as coach, and M r . Kokkin, who kept a fatherly eye over us throughout the season.

Although this season found most of us raw recruits, next season should find us well established in a regular competition.

CRICKET " A " team was ably coached by Mr. Smillie with assistance from Captain A l a n Corby and Vice-captain Peter Brotheridge. Our batting was strong with Peter Brotheridge and Ian James being effective openers. Don Cornish, A l a n Corby, Graham Ion and Barry Homewood were adept at knocking the cover o f f the ball whilst Harry Griffiths, Len (Boundary Rider) Chard, Neil Evans, Ken Gambling and Gordon Huntington heloed to complete the batting line-up. Under the able guidance of Mr. Pewtress the " Z " Cricket Team played four other teams and although we were unsuccessful some very good cricket was played.

In at least one match, that against South Melbourne, we were most unlucky to lose as we lost our last wicket when only four runs short of victory.

Best performances recorded during the season were as follows — Bowling: R. Spargo, 6 for 37 against Sunshine and 4 for 42 against Essendon; B. Ware, 3 for 11 against Footscray " A " ; D. Kellett, 3 for 46 against Essendon. Batting: Kellett, 42 against South Melbourne; V. W i l l i a m s , 39 n.o. against Essendon and 32 against the " A " team; R. Skillon, 35 against Essendon.

BASEBALL The baseball team played eight matches during the season, being successful in four of the eight. W i t h a little luck we could have finished on top of our section; as it was we finished in second place to Essendon.

The team started the season poorly, losing the first three games.

However we came back into the picture by winning four out of the next five games. W e were unlucky to lose this odd match as Brunswick defeated us by only one run in the last innings.

Three new players who had not previously played the game performed creditably. These were Bill Clarke (1st bag), Geoff W h i t t a k e r (pitcher) and Leon Rogowski (re I ief pitcher).

The other players in the team were Ockwell (catcher), our captain; Corby (second bag), Don Cornish (third bag), McBain (short-stop), Huntingdon (centre field) and Smith (right field).

The team hopes to win its section next season.

Pewtress proved a very helpful coach throughout the season.

Combined School Sports ATHLETICS W i t h the best athletic team we have had for some years the boys and their coaches were confident of doing well at the metropolitan carnival held at South Melbourne Cricket Ground early in October. The overall standard, however, was particularly high and we could only manage third place.

The sprints — both the TOO and 220 yards events, were our downfall as we only gained two third places in six events.

In the jumping, field and relay events, we held our own. Our middle distance runner, " B u l l " Robertson and our miler, Bill Stunnel, found the opposition too strong.

Good individual performances came from " Y o u n g " Bowman, with third places in the under 13 sprint and the under 13 broad jump; " S t e w y " M c N e i l , who gained a second in the open hop, step and jump and a t h i r d in the open broad jump; Geoff Hope, who won the under 15 discus and Ian Broadway, who broke a record in the under 14 broad jump in addition to running third in the under 14 sprint. The under 15 relay team of

Hope, Beet, Errington and Pruned won its relay event.

Despite our defeat we enjoyed the carnival. The healthy spirit of competition evident among all the competitors promises well for the future.

Finally, we extend our thanks to our coaches — Messrs. Pewtress, Rowsell, W i l d , Harrison and McGarvin, who sacrificed their time to coach and train us.

THE

COMBINED TECHNICAL SCHOOLS SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The school swimming team and its supporters travelled to the Olympic Pool at the end of M a r c h with high hopes of success. Our optimism was based on the results of the school carnival previously held at Footscray City Baths, where a high standard had been achieved by many competitors.

However our optimism was short lived as our old rivals — Preston, soon showed that they had entered an extremely strong team. Our hopes were momentarily raised when Russell M c M a h o n

Spargo,

gained second piace in the under 15 backstroke and Bob Spargo was beaten by a touch in the open freestyle, but we were unable to maintain our position for very long. The best individual performance came from Bob Spargo who repeated his 1954 backstroke victory by winning the open backstroke event in record time.

Ken Betts also did well, gaining second place in two events—the under 14 backstroke and the under 14 breaststroke.

The school can be proud of its representatives, not only for their splendid " a l l o u t " effort, but also for the manner in which they competed. They reported promptly to the officials, left the water immediately their event was completed and took defeat like true sportsmen.
