AUSTRAL STANDARD CABLES PTY LTD. Makers of Australia's Telephone Cables Hampstead Road, Maidstone, Victoria Austral Standard Cables was incorporated in 1948 and now supplies about 70 per cent of the communication cable requirements of Australia and New Zealand. There are four factories, (and BIy's Industries Pty. Limited has recently become a Subsidiary,) producing a complete range of communication cables, including paper or plastic insulated for telephone networks, and co-axial for simultaneous transmission of hundreds of conversations, or for T.V. programmes over long distances. The manufacturing activities are backed by laboratories engaged in materials testing, test equipment maintenance and construction and development of new or improved cable types. Each factory has engineering services and an office organisation for accounting, sales and personnel functions. Some specialised areas of skill embrace all branches of engineering, physics and chemistry, with the main laboratories being situated at Maidstone. Technical research and development is receiving special attention to keep pace with, and indeed to be ahead of modern techniques and skills, and with the intention of updating technical resources in the manufacturing and quality control areas. With this progressive development, career opportunities are frequently advertised for suitably qualified personnel to join this expanding organisation.

PRINCIPAL & VICE-PRINCIPAL REPORT This year marked the hundredth anniversary of the introduction of a State system of education, and in those hundred years many educational changes have taken place.

One of the most important changes has been the amount of flexibility that has been introduced and courses that are now available. The idea of a secondary technical school being a place where students are trained for a certain trade or occupation is no longer true. Now the aim is to provide each student with as wide a range of experiences and general education as possible so that he will be able to lead a full and interesting life, but at the same time ensuring that provision is m a d e for him to proceed to further education and the career of his choice. This change has led to the introduction of a greater variety of subjects being offered, to different methods of teaching, and to students and teachers being granted greater freedom. It is most important that this freedom be used wisely and in a responsible w a y . The individual has the right to choose what he thinks is b e s t , subject to recognizing the rights of other people. If it is used in this w a y it m u s t help to develop initiative, independence, ability, and concern for others, and to make our world a better place in which to live.

I wish to congratulate all of those w h o , by their efforts, have achieved success in their studies and have gained something from their last twelve months at school. In other pages of this magazine there are mentioned those who have gained scholarships and academic successes and those who have done so well in sporting activities. For them it has been a most successful year. Others who are not named, but who have worked to the best of their ability, have the satisfaction of knowing that they tried, and they deserve congratulations too. Finally, I wish to thank the staff who have worked so hard for the students, and have done so much beyond the call of duty in organizing extra-curricular activities such as excursions, camps, sport, and clubs. A HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO A L L . W.C.lloore, Principal. Once again we have come to the end of another school year; some have been successful and others not so successful. But m y main concern is those students who seem to drift along without seeming to have any purpose and too easily accept a second rate performance as being "good enough", if they only realised how much they were paying for their own education over a year (outside wage x 52 weeks) then second best is never good enough.

My congratulations to those students who have obtained a scholarship, gained promotion to a higher form, won some sporting event or been in a winning team or been an ordinary student who has done his best at all times and taken part in as many activities as possible. M y thanks to everyone who helped to m a k e the school run successfully; the Form Captains, Roll Monitors, S.R.C. representatives. Social Service Collectors, the "Runners", Depaiitmental Monitors - to Ken Hamley (Lockers) and Scott Oliver (Time Bell), Last year our courses were widened to include certain electives, next year these will be widened even further but students must be extremely careful when choosing subjects to select those leading towards a desired future course or career. The staff will help to guide students as much as possible, but the final decision must rest with the student and his parents. Good luck and best wishes to those students who are leaving, either to employment or on to further academic studies. A happy and a safe holiday to all those who are returning to F.T.S. next year. C . 1. Kangaroo House floated in with "Cyclone Gael" to steal the Shield from Koala House. Congratulations to the Housemaster Mr. J. Hine and his assistant Mr. I. Drayne.

The Open Freestyle Relay and the Open Medley Relay. The same four boys competed in both events:Tom Tomlinson 4K, John Cobby 5A, Michael Kuzmich 4D and Ian Wilkins 5B. 2. Open 200 metres Freestyle was won by Ian Wilkins 5B. 3. Under 16 Diving won by Michael Leach.

b. METROPOLITAN INTER TECHNICAL SCHOOLS SWIMMING CARNIVAL Again in "B" section we found Team success hard to achieve but once again there were some fine individual efforts.

SUMMER TEAMS SPORT With the dismissal of Inter House and Mass Sports, there appeared a noticeable gain of strength in Inter School Sports Teams. Cricket gained recognition by winning their Section, and will playoff for the Premership; Volley ball played off against Essendon for the Section title but were beaten in three sets. Basketball with one loss by one point unfortunately lost their Section Title; Tennis saw renewed interest but in results little improvement, even under the capable hands of Mr, Tibballs.

WINTER TEAMS SPORT Lacrosse and Tennis unfortunately were not successful, however, both Soccer and Football showed real improvement. Soccer under the sound administration of Mr. P. Noss and Mendo the Master as Captain not only won their division but also the Premership. This is the first victory of the coverted trophy since 1962 - a fine achievement. Australian Rules also gained distinction by winning their division and the 1st Semi-final, however, they lost the Preliminary final to Geelong West. The team was ridden with injury and the Master Manager and Coach Messrs. Maxwell and Lyons found this one just too much. The Baseball team I consider suffered defeat because of too few teams entering sides into the Western Section. With the loss of 1 game they had to be content with 2nd placing in our section. Team coaches and managers are to be praised for undertaking the difficult task of organizing and assisting school teams. To all who played a role this year in summer and winter sports please accept my sincere thanks. Thanks to Mr. Noss (cricket and Soccer), Mr. Tibballs and Mr. McMillan (Tennis), Mr. Norman (basketball) Mr. Vernon (lacrosse), Mr. Lyons (football and volley ball), Mr. Maxwell (football) and Mr. Norrish (cricket and baseball).

At the Inter-Technical School level the following boys competed at Wattle Park against 4 runners from each of the competing schools in the various age groups. Order of finishing in each age group:U/14 P. Beales, S. Sinnett, M. Spence A. Tzinis. U/15 S. Barruto, F. Berkery, B. Misavick, G. Aralios. U/16 G. Sturrock, N. Capin, M. Contessi G. Booth. Open R. Meaney, B. Abramszyk, I. Ravenscroft, A. Tzinis. There were three efforts of note when you consider approximately 180 students completed in each age group:

1. Peter Beales in U/14's was running 6th when he fell into a hole and twisted his ankle, but still struggled on and came in 35th. 2. Garry Sturrock ran 9th in the U/16's. 3. The boys in the opens all came in the first 50 boys to finish (28th, 37th, 42nd and 50th)- a good team effort. ATHLETICS RESULTS A. INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS Personal standards again supplied the nucleus for the Inter-House athletic carnival and in turn the foundation of the school athletic squad. The actual finish was in doubt until the last few events. The Kangaroos outstayed the Emus. However, not only must Mr. Hine and Mr. Cunningham be praised for their efforts but all Housemasters. B. METROPOLITAN INTER-TECHNICAL SCHOOLS CARNIVAL 1.

SECTION DAY

The school again achieved success winning the "C" section shield making it two successive section wins. The winning margin was 87 points. The total tally of 359 points exceeding last years total of 327. "A" events registering 19 first placings, 16 second placings and 9 third placings. The team gained in "B" events" 8 first placings, 4 second placings and 2 third placings.

All relay teams will also represent the school on Championship Night 31st October, 1973. Our principal, Mr. Moore, at a team luncheon, praised all team members, not only "A" winners, but all of the competitors on a fine team effort. Space unfortunately does not allow us to list all of the boys who gained certificates on this day.

SPECIAL SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS AND HONOURS 1. Ian Fry's sprinting powers enabled him to gain a Rotary, Exchange Scholarship to Hamilton Canada. 2. Maurice Contessi appears to have lost little ability in the athletic world, with four "A" certificates. 3. Bruce Kiley's eight certificates involving the Javelin, Triple Jump, Hurdles "A", Long Jume as well as 2nd placings in four other events. 4. Leonard Balcam again became a member of the All Technical Schools cricket team. 5. The Basketball team (Tuesday p.m.) also deserves special recognition for under Mr. K. Burbridge (International Basketballer) they won the open "A" division shield Western suburbs and also the U/18 team shield Western suburbs. Credit must go the boys on their initiative, as they organized this team between themselves with the help of other students in the Western region. 6. The soccer teams All-Tech. Premership, which is a fine achievement by the boys. 7. Our Gym club which was started by Mr. Hoare this year saw all our boys who entered for Junior "C" grade standard tests passed and thus becoming eligible to enter "B" grade Victorian championships in 1974.

Well done Steven Barnett IC, Jeffrey Jolley IC, Geoffrey Phillips 3F, Trevor Johnson 3F and Alex Scarpaci ID. 8. Ex-students and local achievements were:- Frank Pocervina and Shane Kilpatrick who both played with Footscray under 19's and Reserves in Football. Also of note was that Ian Wickson this year made Footscray's Senior team. Well done Ian. In concluding this report I must express my appreciation to all staff members for their efforts during the year. Without the staff's backing over the last four years both I and the students in general would not have been able to run a sporting programme within the school. With Mr. Moore, Mr. McLean and Mr. Maxwell's backing, and the great efforts put in by my staff members in Physical Education Department my job as Sportsmaster has been a lot easier this year. Play is involvement, and I hope time over the holidays is used well, and all students enjoy their break and return safely. G.D. Calverley (Sportsmaster)

FORM NOTES

lA

W e would like to thank M r . Bester on organizing the trip to the Royal Show for u s . We are still hoping to go to Healesville with M r . Bester and a couple of other teachers. Nothing really exiciting happened during the year. We are a bunch of good kids and we all have nicknames such asGarry "Birdman"Audley - brains. Joe "Frog Brazza" Brzezinski - has many nicknames. Wayne "Rubber lips" Butson - everyone's friend. Dave "Yo-Yo" Cassar- Yo-yo genius. Scott "Cooke Man" Garnett - money collector. Robert "Tichey" Harris - name from size. Brian "Greasy Rider" Lofts - motorbike. Joe "Skull" Raffaele - Form Captain Roughian. Yuri "Duck" Rogers - everyone's friend. John "Shubbie" Shubert - never here to talk a b o u t . IB Three boys in our form were in the house sports held recently at Royal P a r k . They were D r e w D e n s l e y , Frank Lanciana and m y s e l f . I was lucky enough to represent our school at the T e c h . sports as w e l l . Our form was w e l l represented at the Macedรณn camp held in the first week

14

of October. We were camped in army tents and helped with the chores around the camp. There was horse riding, archery, shooting and swimming for the ones who wanted to brave the cold water of the d a m . The last night of the camp each tent had to put on two items for a concert in the m e s s hall, and fun was had by all. The members of our form are Drew Densley alias D r e w , Brian Gale alias Windy, David Hagarty alias Maggerty, Frank Lanciana alias A n t , Gerald Lukawsky alias W a s p , Neil Thornton alias N a i l , Greg Trawn alias Grog, and Mark Prentice alias G a s . by Neil Thornton IF During this year it has had a very normal year. Nothing exciting happens in our form. If anybody wants to know where James O'Neil is he is in hospital with a broken pelvis. Often boys have asked this question. The members of our form are: Tony Galati - Bristol, Wayne Lewis Zulu Warrior, Ian Soules - Polluter, Mreulje - Mary Jews, David HaberfieldTomatoes, Peter Olcorn - Punkin H e a d , Norman McGuire - M o e s , James 0'NeilOrange P e e l , Mark Coles - Woolworths, Ross Lupton - Steptoe.

FORMI IK STEVEN Nikolic - really interested in rockets and astrology. Likes reading all sorts of things. KADI RANUSHEVSKI - 1 3 years o l d . Likes to be called Jim. Barracks for Richmond nickname Cardboard. FIKRI ALIMOUSKA - thinks M r . Reynold's baby girl jumps around like a monkey and that I K is the "toughest" form in the Migrant centre. Nickname Pocket size. LUIS ATANASOVSKI - likes being called "Luis the fly" and "Lamb chops". Also likes a certain girl (J.L.) MARINZ LAMENTA - likes fishing, bowling, billiards and soccer. Likes playing with IK kids at lunchtime soccer, chasing etc. Nickname "Polish" TOMMY MITRUCSKI - thinks he is a bad boy in class. Likes T.V. and thinks IK is a good form. Nickname "Scar Face". ZUDI RICASKI - thinks IK is a great form and wants to stay in IK next year. Plays a good piano accordion. PASQUALE BIANIO - thinks his mother and father are great. Makes a brilliant pizza. Likes being a court jester. Nicknames "Banana" and "Pinchface". MICHAEL STANJO - likes fishing and billiards. Thinks we should have a bigger space to play i n . Thinks the teachers are m a r b l e s . Nickname "Banjo". MARKO JELOVAC - is holidaying in Yugoslavia for three m o n t h s . Nickname "Jellyfish".

IL At the start of the year we were all lost. We went to a big room and the teachers put name tags on us. Then we went to the old Migrant Centre, we met our teachers. A few days later we learned how to use the timetable. We moved to the new Migrant Centre about a month later - we picked apples off the trees - they put us into new groups. We liked it much better at the new centre. Originating in Victoria, devised by two Australian sisters, Dacomb has progressed to present-day success against tremendous odds. Its worth has been proved —unaided, entirely on its own merit — in business, professional and journalistic fields. In more recent times Dacomb has displayed its accuracy and reliability in Parliamentary and Law Court reporting. Dacomb is unique in its easy adaptability to other phonetic languages. Tonga, Buenos Aires and Nauru are proof of this. It is openly claimed by the Prime Minister's Department in Tonga that Dacomb secretaries are preferred because of the ease when taking dictation with which they can swing from English to Tongan as required. The same is true of Nauru and Buenos Aires where bilingual stenographers swing from English to Spanish as required. Students attending the Queen Salóte College in Tonga learn Dacomb Shorthand to help them with their English. Some who have completed their training at the College in Melbourne have obtained their Dacomb Diplomas for 120 w.p.m. — no mean feat in a foreign language! Any adaptability into a foreign language of course requires thorough knowledge of the basic theory as set out in the textbooks. All diploma tests are taken from Hansard are of five-minute duration and permit a maximum of one per cent (1%) of error. For those vihosQ Hansard speeds range from 120 w.p.m. to approx. 200 w.p.m. the salary scale is up to $11,000 per annum for Hansard reporting and $42 per day for Law Court reporting. Dacomb graduates are employed in both these fields and obtain the salaries stated. The higher the educational level the easier the climb to the above standard and the more rewarding the resultant positions. Added incentive to those high speed aspirants (Dacomb of course) — Mrs. Elaine Robshaw was one of the only two candidates to pass 200 w.p.m. at the C.E.S.A. exam in June this year! AND January, 1973 students attending Dacomb College are now writing speeds of up to and including 150 w.p.m. Hansard, standard 5 minutes, 1% error, spelling and punctuation included. Ease of learning, rapid advancement to spped, sustained high speed potential, easy adaptation into other phonetic languages add up to — Dacomb a powerful Australian tool in any intelligent hand.

2K WITH 2L This year we had second form football matches and the 2K, 2L mob were the best. Our first game was against 2A and 2V, so the form captain of 2K and 2L made up a champion team. It was time to play on the Wednesday, and we got dressed in Parksides dressing rooms and all went out. We didn't know what we were going to do because the other forms didn't have a team, so they had all the other kids from all the other forms. The game started, in the first minute we got our first goal. Then the other one came up and more after that. The game was almost over. They still hadn't scored. We had seven goals and three points up then we kicked another goal and the game was over. The goal scorers were Simpson 3, Rasmovski 2, Musgrove 2 and Jacobson 1. 5B We have this year all had some good times and some bad times at school. One of the good things about school this year has been our understanding English and Form teacher. Miss Leitha Nilsen. We have also been fortunate in having such a good teacher for Maths in Mr. Juchtzer, Physics - Mr. Maxwell and Mr. Bester, Mr. Lyons for Chemistry as well as Mr. Norman, and since this form has two groups in it, e.g. one has Mechanical Appreciation and Tech. Drawing A (Mr. Hocking) whereas the other group does Art and Technical Drawing C (Mr. Rovis). For Social Studies we have Mr. Evans and Mr. Cunningham. Our form has only fourteen persons in it, their names arePeter Thomas Bates, George Bonazza, John Dennis Coby, Peter John Davidson, Alan John Franklin, Russell Dudley Forster, Bemhard Grampe, Paul Thomas, Dudley Nehon Esq., Gregory James Tandy, Jim Tzambazakis , Ian Jeffery Wilkins, Peter John Williams, Emmanuel Zairus and last but not least our student from Laos, Khamlec Thongvilu.

We have all worked hard this year and are looking forward to the Christmas break. All of us, wish otir fellow students and staff a happy and accident free holiday. This year's 5B has nearly dispersed and so, wishing all students good luck for next year, we say farewell. 5F This year the Commerce form is 5F. In 5F we have a unique combination of every queer, funny, mad or just stupid characters. In this lot we have bought together a great form. Everyone has nicknames. Eddie Anastasi (funny) - very funny fellow. Brian Bongetti (nose) - won the stirring award by a nose. Anyone who knows how long his nose is knows how much he won by. David Crees (lolly legs) - won the lolly pop award. Allan Hall (the bow legged jib). David Hillbrick (div) - has had a good year. John Mclntyre (percy) - sometimes forgets his blood pressure, gets excited and turns pink. Robert Mietto (jelly tot) - has formed a group of the future called jelly tot and the oil slicks. A champion group in the making. Michael Medhurst (snake) - wants to get around with all the girls. Tony Pezzano (penguins) - always squashes peoples feet with his huge feet. Robert Reynolds (dickie) - the funny boy of the form with his jokes.

Ross Russo (mafia) - has everyone scared in the form with the Mafia. Has started his protection racket. Joe Santamaria (cleo) - everyone is still wondering where he gets his hair cut. Vic Scalise (machine gun) Scalise always talks about things he knows nothing about. Tony Sofoulis (bones) - his ambition is to become a skeleton in the museum. Graham Stanley (fang) - always puts his cloak on and flies for the big marks. Dale Wyatt (whale) - always was telling us whales of tales.

MY YEARS IN A F.I.T. There is one school in my life-time that I will always prize, As the best and most equiped school in this land, I don't know your opinion, but there's no doubt in my eyes. And that will keep until my bones are sand. I've spent my best years learning here, which I am glad to say. Has helped me to get up and on my feet. At times it wasn't easy, but the path was cut away. By teachers who assisted when I felt beat. My first years at this college will be those I shan't forget. And I needn't be the one to tell you why. For those days have proven guilty to a crime of being set. To pass without an effort from a guy. Those were the days of glory when maths was a delight, There was never a sign of worry on your brow. For the syllabus was easy, you needn't work at night, The last thing on your mind was school-work now. But times have changed as you should know you've seen as much as me. That this is not the case in our late years. The subjects are much harder, than what they used to be. And these are one or all of your main fears. 42

Although I will be leaving soon, I don't want to omit. The fact that I have been a fortunate kid, To have actually been a student at an important school like F.I.T. And I am so very glad that I did. As a finale I want to say, thank you very much. For having me when I was such a brat. There are many things I've written, I hope its not double Dutch, If so then I'm sorry and I'll now take off my Hat. ALEX TZINIS

RAIN I love rain, on a summers day. When I have just been swimming, and the leaves rustle and the winds blow, and my mother calls, and says to get out of the water. And we run home. No animals seem to care; If it rains or snows Or the winds blow, I wonder why. Stephen Barnett IC A FAT MAN There was a fat man, A fat man was he. Every now and then he goes to a tree. But up in the tree there was a bee. That stung his thumb. Which made him bleed.

CREATIVE WORK Opening my eyes at first I feel thick slimy moist fog set in my eyes The new surroundings I perceive A shock at first A cluster of enormous refined shapes Towering high above the endless horizon Cold rigid prisms looming in the vast quiet The absence! of irregular mountain Lying as dust at the base of these pillars I become aware The forest of pillars is space For I find I can touch the inside walls I am space Breathing in the solid fog which surrounds me How negative space lives within the solid. B. GRAMPE 5B THIS IS DEATH You duck from skull fragments And taste his blood The salty warm sensation A cause to shudder The muddy walls of the trench Turn slick deep red with the putrid stench Rising around you. Dismembered comrades, dismembered foe, one last onslaught Your eye sockets fill with blood The cold steel enters And enters once again He's been killed I didn't know him And there's no space Where he used to stand. B..GRAMPE 5B

THE CURVE We didn't think of each other as we came through, but just went straight to the motor bike. Blood, where did that come from as I look over my body. My elbow had a deep slash and it was bleeding badly; my back pocket was torn to ribbonsluckily I had my comb there for as I looked at my comb it was half scraped and my legs were all bruised and sore; the helmet I was wearing had a seven inch long severe mark. Thank whoever it is up there that it wasn't my head. My brother was nearly as bad. The thing that left us both amazed was "Why didn't we fall off, it seemed like we had landed on a bed of flowers Why was that so?" But we know that we do get the after effects which are affecting us now. by TONY SGRO FOG What is fog? What does it do? Does it talk? Does it walk? Will we ever, ever know? I will try to find out. Colin Wilkins

$10 If I found $10 I would keep it and spend it on billiards and machines. On second thoughts, I better hand it in to the police.

"THE RAIN" It hits the roof of my Small warm house and Makes me go to sleep With a singing tune in My mind. Looking out my Damped bedroom window I can see tiny droplets hit The cold ground constantly Looking to see where they come from. But there are only dark Clouds above it - can it be That it comes from those Dark clouds - it's stopped Raining now and the dark Clouds are disappearing With the rain.

STORY BY ALEX TZINIS 5D It's dark in here, it may ruin my sun tan. I hope they get this trial over quick otherwise I'll miss my appointment with that firm. I've never liked these buildings, they've so loomy. Here comes the Judge, and here comes the accused. He's a black, a Negro. Guilty, no question about it, now let's get out of here. Oh no, now I've got to go through a trial. I'll surely miss my appointment and maybe even my date with that rich girl that owns that estate in Toorak, They have no right to keep me couped up in this place. I might as well think of a new slogan for that soap. An hour goes past and the trial is just about to finish.

The rain, it comes...! by TONY SGRO SOUND The drill sound gets in your ears. I can't stand it. At the same time the radio is on. And the kids are talking. It sounds funny. But when Mr. Hine comes in everybody goes quiet and gets on with the work. As soon as he goes they start to talk again. The man went on using the drill. Then it sounded better. by Tony Mancuso IS

Good, we've going into our chambers to decide what it is, the chair or life for that dirty good for nothing. Well, come on, is it that hard to decide whether he is guilty or not? Oh, no, numbers 4 and 11 think that he's innocent. What ignorance they have, no judgement whatsoever. Now we must discuss it all over again and pass the ballots until it is unanimous. The ballot is passed around and, good, it's all over for him. He'll be sent to prison where he belongs. I can go and see my girl friend where I belong. This is the last time you'll see me in one of these predicaments.

CARING FOR OTHERS by PETER CULHANE IC Caring for others is like caring for animals, feeding them, cleaning them and teaching them to do the right thing and not the wrong thing. After a baby is two years old it starts to talk and walk about. It's good to care for a person been in a car accident or some accident and has to lose a leg crippled for the rest of their has to use crutches or a wheel

who has other or is life or chair.

Some people have to spend the rest of their lives in a public hospital or a private hospital in the country or a small one in Melbourne. Some have their own nurse to help them about and feed them and do the shopping. STORY BY KERRY McDONALD I was doing a school project on mining and I had read books on it and studied hard, but there was one thing I didn't know and that was what it would be like to be in a mine. How would it feel? I imagined how it would feel and what I would do. But I had to find out. The only way to do so was to go into one. I went to one of the nearby minefields and looked around until I found the right mine. I took a torch and a geopogists pick into it. I went down into the mine about ICQ yards. Then I started chipping the rock until I had got what I wanted - a sample of gold. As I was walking out of the mine I tripped and fell. The mine caved in and a log fell on my head. Then my father woke me up.

CONFLICT by RICHARD McCLUSKEY Get out of bed you lazy thing It's time to go to school here's your pants and jumper and things it's time to go to school. Hurry up or you'll be late And a teacher will nab you Sneaking through the school gate It's time to go to school. You'll get detention that's what you'll get and deserve every bit All you do is lie there and sigh Now get up before you get hit it's time to go to school. Don't talk back to me my boy or I'll get your father up and you know what he'll do if I have to wake him up it's time to go to school. Here's your breakfast come and eat don't be hanging around all day Come and sit down on the seat Stop fiddling and do as I say it's time to go to school. Make sure you eat all that now don't leave a scrap because there are people desparate for food but you wouldn't know that, it's time to go to school. Here's your books now hurry up or I'll get the belt to you look you've woken your father now what will you do, it's time to go to school. Here comes poppa you'd better go If he catches you He'll hit you good and proper it's time to go to school.

So bye for now I'll see you tonight and don't you get into another fight for if you do I'll see to you and cast you from my sight It's time to go to school. "WHAT A DAY" The sand was a golden yellow. The sky was a glittering white; The sea was a sparkling blue; not A whisper about, not even the sea-gulls were screaming today. Such a lazy day! Relaxing on the warm sand, my Mind for once, was away from thinking About office work - the atmosphere is So peaceful and all I wanted to do was To stay here all through the long hot day; Morning till night - wouldn't it be a Dream, no work, no nothing, just relaxing On the warm sand I What a day - but tomorrow my Holidays will be over and I've just... TONY SGRO

IVICA TOMASEVIC The school was greatly saddened by the death of Ivica Tomasevic of 2H, in the September holidays this year, as the result of a car accident. Ivica was a quiet gentle young man sincerely remembered by his teachers, especially those of the Migrant Centre who knew him best, as a gentle giant. To his parents and his younger brother we extend our sympathy.

What goes ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, plop? A man laughing his head off.

A. Q. A.

What did Tarzan say when he saw the elephants coming? Here come the elephants.

Q. A.

Why did the chicken cross the road. To get to the other side.

Q.

Why did the boy stand out in the middle of the road with two slices of bread? Waiting for the traffic jam.

A. Q. A. Q. A.

If a king sits on gold, who sits on silver? The lone ranger. Why did the chicken cross the road softly? Because he couldn't walk - hardly.

Q. A.

Why did the man cross the road with a gun and a knife? To shoot across the road and cut around the corner.

THE RAT RACfi You got to live, You got to love, You got to be somebody, You got to shove. But it's hard, really so hard. Sometimes I feel like going down, down, down. As I am swallowing pain. You got to eat, You got to drink. You got to sleep. You got to worry. It's so hard, really so hard. When I don't feel like, But when it's good, so good, And when I hold you in my arms. And look into your eyes, I feel so good. But sometimes it's so hard, really so hard. You got to run. You got to hide. You got to keep your woman satisfied. But it's so hard, I mean really hard. Sometimes I feel like going down, down, down, As I am swallowing my own pain. RAY FRENCH

nothing happens on the way - like last year, when the car broke down; that fixed us up, didn't it? Then there's the planning, where shall we go? The children say here, you say there, Âżnd you know what I say; I say let's stay home, at least we know we're going to sleep on a comfortable bed and have a tasteful meal remember last year at that boarding house, what did we pay for? A squeaky bed that you couldn't even sleep on, for food which tasted more like..., paying to be told not to bring wet clothes in, wet costumes in or sand and not to make any noise. Holidays are just a plain straight forward nuisance. RAIN The rain makes me happy. Things grow quickly after the rain, I think about going mushrooming, or standing in the misty rain. Looking up and letting the water fall softly on my face. Trickling water on my hand. Like little ice drops freezing together. Dew drops bring sparkles in the dark lonely morning. by Stephen Barnett IC

SHORT STORY _ "BETTER HOME" TONY SGRO Holidays are just a heck of more frustration and trouble, you'll come back with so much cleaning up to do. Then you're worrying if you hadn't forgotten anything back home and that

"CONFLICT" - ' My definition of conflict, is when a person likes to do something and another force steps in and stops a person from doing it. Conflicts are found at home, between the parents and children. Here is an example of a conflict in a home. "Hi mum, I had a mighty time". "Where have you been Jim? Your father and I Have been worried sick" "What do you mean Mum? I've just been to the flicks with some mates" "But, why didn't you tell me son? Who were the mates you were with? Why are you wearing those clothes around still?" "What is wrong with them Mum?" "We've been through this before Jim, now get to your room and read that book I bought you". "But, mum.." "Do as I say, Jim" The same situation as this arises at school. It is bad enough for Jim at home but when he gets to school it is worse. "How ya going Bluey?" "Alright Jim, the bell will be going soon" "There goes the bell now, come on, let's go and face old Sandwell again Blue". "How are you today Jim?" "Okay sir" "I'm afraid Jim will have to go down to Mr. Spain and explain why you are not in uniform, and why you smell of cigarettes". 50

After school Jim faces another conflict with the law. "Son, how old are you?" "Fifteen, officer" "I'm afraid I will have to report you to the school, for smoking and your offensive behaviour". Wherever Jim and other teenagers go, they will always come up against a conflict. Whether it is at school, home, or just walking down the street. by RUSSELL MEANEY HOW MUCH ADVICE SHOULD PARENTS GIVE THEIR CHILDREN? When children are young and inexperienced they would benefit greatly from adhering to the advice given by parents. They are older, wiser, and more experienced than their offspring. When children take advice at an early age this influences their outlook and helps them to draw conclusions and views on their surroundihgs. However, too much advice may be more of a hinderance than an aid and restrict the child completely from attaining his own outlooks. The child may become dependent upon other's advice which is not always in your best interest. The aspects that I think parents should advise upon are the ones which aid the child who perhaps may be faltering on some decision. I think that parents should have no influence upon your deciding what occupation to undertake. It is a personal matter that can affect your whole life. It is up to you what you feel you are

best suited for and would like to do, perhaps with the assistance of a vocational guidance councillor. On the subject of clothes, parents have absolutely no say whatsoever. On that matter I am inclined to be influenced by friends. They would like me to be well behaved which I do as best as I can although it is usually not good enough to please entirely. Briefly, I feel that parents should openly advise children but allow it up to the child's judgement whether to take it or not. JIM GUY

We have stolen, we all have cheated. We have killed, we have mained, we are dying. We're all living by the sword, we kill for food, we have died for food. Who can define what is right, when we are all murderers. How we act, pure and good, but all underneath we are black and just as bad. Can this be ultimate life, when we kill and hurt to live.

I don't care about not getting a present as long as I go back to the Ranch. When we were there last time I was riding a horse called Candy. She was pregnant. When I go back at Christmas she'll probably have had her foal. by Steven Noon
