The Principal's Page As we approach the end of another year, we feel a tinge of satisfaction in the development of the College. It is nine years since I was appointed Principal of this College and, in that time, one develops a sense of responsibility and ownership—which, no doubt, many of the instructors and students share with me. In the administration of a large institution, one's only regret is that administrative duties preclude teaching and other activities whereby one can associate with the students in the activi ies of the College.

Perhaps there are many other matters that could be mentioned, such as the outstanding success of the Diploma students in sport, the remarkable activity of the Social Service League, and the admission of girls to our full-day Commerce courses.

Before concluding, we must mention the competition held amongst the students of the Royal Melbourne Technical College and the Gordon Institute of Technology to design a sports and physical education building for this College. This building, we hope, will be erected soon on land made available by the Footscray City Council, and will overlook the Turner Reserve. One oval will be used by the Footscray Technical College students.

The next two years will be a further major phase of our development, for the Education Department has approved a new building programme at Ballarat Road, and plans are nearly complete. Work should commence early in 1961. This will mean completely new accommodation for the Junior students, and the Diploma students will take over the building now used by the Juniors. The office and administrative staff will move to Ballarat Road, but the Nicholson Street building will be fully occupied with Commerce, Chemistry, Turning and Fitting, Moulding, Electrical Trades and women's classes in Dressmaking and Millinery.

Numerous functions are held in a school year. Some of the highlights are— Diploma Award Night—at which the largest number of Diplomas ever to be awarded in any one year was presented— and the excellent performance of the Diploma students (girls and boys) in the play: "Enduring as the Camphor Tree."

diverted from the South Esk and, instead of flowing down the Cataract Gorge, is dammed at a point 415 feet above sea level by a concrete dam, 108 feet high. Water from this dam falls down the Leadrace tunnel, 19 feet in diameter, to the power station near the Tamar River. This was the first hydro-electric plant in the Commonwealth, commencing operations in 1896 with a generator which developed 540 h.p. Eventually this plant will have a capacity of 3,000,000 h.p.

In the afternoon we inspected the Australian Aluminium Production Commission's Alumina Plant and Aluminium Smelter at Bell Bay. The tour of this plant was relevant to the morning excursion, for aluminium is produced by an electrolytic process which requires enormous quantities of electricity.

Trevallyn supplies this power cheaply. Most of the raw materials are shipped in and the finished product shipped out. It is to be hoped that in the not too distant future a bridge will span the Tamar River near the plant, so that the limestone, used in calcination, can be trucked directly across instead of the present system where the trucks go 30 miles upstream to Launceston, 30 miles back to the limestone quarries, then the 60 miles back to the plant with their load, a total of 120 miles—whereas the quarry is only about two miles from the plant, but on the opposite side of the river. The plant uses 32,000 kilowatts at about five volts. If there is a power failure which lasts more than four hours the metal solidifies in the baths, some 144 of them, and it would take twelve months to put the plant back into operation. Besides refining the alumina to aluminium and its alloys, alumina—Al(OH) —is dried and sold in bags for use in the manufacture of glass and abrasives. A small quantity is used in stomach powders.

The inspection of this plant was valuable to chemists, electrical engineers and civil engineers. We have now seen something of what has been taught to us since the sixth grade.

Tuesday Night in Launceston Tuesday night in Launceston presents few places of entertainment, especially to a group of twenty-eight lads from F.T.C.

With the kind assistance of Mr. Waterson, head of the Chemistry Department, the Commerce School carried out several tobacco tests and found the average weight of a cigarette to be .8828 of a gram. In fact, it takes 1 lb. of tobacco to make 25.7 packets of cigarettes, costing £ 4 / 3 / 6 . Smokers pay an average of 3 / 3 per packet for cigarettes, of which 1/5 is paid in excise duties. (For 1958-59 excise duties paid by smokers was, in round figures, £71 million.)

Incidentally, medical opinion is that 80 per cent, of all cancer victims are smokers.

TASMANIAN TOUR (By 7th Form Students) Early morning of Tuesday, 23rd August, 1960, amidst yawns, moans and groans, the Tasmanian party rose from their beds to prepare for some little island south of Victoria.

At approximately 7.15 a.m. fifteen members left the T.A.A. terminal in Elizabeth Street and proceeded to Essendon aerodrome, where they joined forces with the other fourteen.

The aeroplane on flight 445 to Launceston and Hobart was fifteen minutes late; but after making friends with the air hostesses, we settled down to enjoy the trip. Mr. Pellizzer is reported as saying, "It is nice to look down and see the birds flying."

Many landmarks could be seen, although the view was covered by occasional patches of cloud. Cameras were clicking in rapid succession until we were over Bass Strait. Then we saw sea and clouds, and more sea and clouds until the Tasmanian coast was sighted. We landed at Western Junction in a li,ght mist, and it was bitterly cold. By 10 o'clock we had travelled the nine miles to the city of Launceston; there we changed buses and were taken to Trevallyn House, situated on the side of one of the surrounding hills.

The geologists were able to show their knowledge when the party stopped for a brief look at a hanging valley near Little Pine Lagoon. The valley was most likely of Permian origin and was cut in a dolerite cliff. Also present around this area (virtually a plateau) were tremendous amounts of morainic deposits from the glacial age.

Another feature of geological importance was the formation of a col at the intersection of two cirques at Saddle Ridge.

The next stop of major interest was the Great Lake, which, as its name suggests, is really great in size. It is some 107 miles around and has an average depth of 16 feet.

It is a deep blue in colour and looks rather exotic against a background of snow-capped mountains. It is some 3300 feet above sea level. It is this lake which forms the initial potential of the hydro-electric schemes we inspected.

most of the 28 visited a night of plays put on by the Launceston Teachers' College.

The plays on show were "Agamemnon" by Aeschyeus and "Piramus and Thisbe" by Shakespeare. The actors were all females, there being no male students in this establishment of two hundred odd females. We later found out that this was the only teachers' college in Tasmania for females, and this was the reason for the large number of inmates.

The plays themselves were, considering the age and sex of the players, reasonably well done. The first, Agamemnon, exhibited wonderful precision and co-ordination, with one or two distinct possibilities for future acting. Perhaps the young lady who played her part particularly well and spoke intelligently, clearly and most audibly would be Bev Procter, who played the part of Clytemnestra (the Queen). Another young lady who showed promise was Venda Hogan, who played the part of Cassandra.

The second play was the one that evoked the most laughter. Although slightly departing from Shakespeare's intentions, the play won the admiration of the audience considering (as we later found out) that this group had had only a limited number of rehearsals. Kay Anderson, who played the part of Pyramus, turned on an excellent performance. So, too, did Wendy Byrne (Thisbe) and Beth Porter (Thesus). Ruth Ginn, who played the part of the fairy Puck, was most sprightly, elegant, and charming and spoke particularly well.

On the whole I think that most of the boys enjoyed the outing, and at least even if they did not get anything educational out of it, at least it was an outing. We were up bright and early Wednesday morning, so that by 8.45 we were on the Bass Highway, heading for Deloraine. Here we had a "short" stop, where we had an unscheduled inspection of the Court of Petty Sessions and the council room. We left the Bass Highway and headed towards Golden Valley, so named because of the abundance of wattle trees growing in the valley between the Cluan Tier and the Quanky Bluff. We had many majestic views of snow-capped mountains, which were a subject for every camera in the party. Frequently the bus would stop at a truly magnificent view and, if there was snow about, a violent snow fight took place.

Whilst in the district, we were the guests of the Hydro-Electric Commission of Tasmania, staying at their chalet at Bronte Park.

This chalet is comparable with the best accommodation in the Commonwealth.

Bronte Park is now a ghost town; once having a population of 4000, it now would have no more than a couple of hundred.

Since the completion of the power developments in the area, the men employed in the constructions have left, leaving a town of empty houses, the chalet being the only decent building.

The two main power stations are Tungatinah (five generators) and Tarraleah (six generators). We inspected the former, Tungatinah, and were favourably impressed by the efficient way in which the station is operated. The Tungatinah Francis turbines have a static head of 1005 feet; the Tarraleah Pelton turbines have a static head of 982 feet. The combined capacity of these stations, which are within a quarter of a mile of each other, is 301,000 h.p.

So that most of the water potential is harnessed, a series of dams, water channels, pipes, syphons, tunnels and, of course, power stations, have been built and are being built at suitable spots in the rugged country. The most economical set-up is where the power station is built directly below the storage reservoir such as Butler's Gorge and at the future station at Catagunya. This latest development consists in 5

the construction of the first pre-stressed concrete dam in the Commonwealth. There are only three such dams in the world, so Tassy isn't completely backward. The method is virtually to tie the dam wall down, reducing the amount of concrete required by 50 per cent. We may expect to see many dams of this type in the future.

As a comparison, the over-all efficiency of hydro power from the first diversions until used by the consumer is 60 per cent., compared with 30 per cent, efficiency of thermal plants.

After inspecting the Catagunya constructions under the expert guidance of Mr. Godfrey, we journeyed to Hobart, two and a quarter hours behind schedule.

On Friday morning we visited the Risdon Electrolytic Zinc Works, which is one of the largest consumers of electric power in Tasmania. The zinc ore concentrate is shipped from Broken Hill and Rosebery, transported to the plant by a series of conveyor belts, roasted to zinc oxide, connected to a zinc sulphate solution, filtered and purified, then used as the electrolyte in an electrolysis process where manganese dioxide impurities deposit on the lead anode and the pure zinc metal deposits on the aluminium cathode. The cathode is stripped, the metal melted and poured into ingots ready for transportation to the markets. Throughout the plant the gangue—the unwanted material—is continually being removed both by mechanical and chemical means. Any valuable material such as sulphur, silver, or cadmium is a valuable by-product. The plant produces a large quantity of superphosphate, which is used as fertiliser. To increase the efficiency of the plant, any zinc sulphate solution lost during a by-product process must be retrieved; the company goes to great pains to ensure that very little zinc is lost. A major problem with a works of this nature is the dust hazard, so special devices are used to prevent undue agitation of the fine zinc oxide, but much is lost as is evident from the brownish colour of the buildings.

Thursday afternoon found us half-way up Mount Wellington. Some of the more adventurous types managed to climb the extra 2000 feet to the top, but most of the party were content to admire the view of Hobart, the Derwent, and the sea from the now empty chalet. There was some snow

on the mountain, but only those members of the party who ventured along the track could claim to have been in it.

Night Life of Hobart Night-time in Hobart, as in most other cities, comes when the sun sets; but the night life in Hobart is somewhat varied. This thriving city is an advocate of 10 o'clock closing, and thus, instead of having the intoxicated on the street at 6 p.m., as in Melbourne, they are on the street at 10 p.m. We cannot really decide which is best, but it was noticed that a large proportion of those on the streets after 10 p.m. were "slightly under the weather."

The name "Tasmaniacs" was given to the demon drivers of Hobart for their driving technique. One never feels safe crossing a Hobart street, especially at night time, for the boys take a delight in sending their vehicles hurtling along the main streets at about 60 m.p.h. One such driver was booked by the police during our stay; he was doing only 75 m.p.h., and he stated that he was just testing his oil pump.

However, despite all these criticisms of driving, one thing which probably stands out alone is the fact that motor horns are not allowed to be used by drivers. This makes travelling through the cities much more pleasant.

Hobart's chief night attractions seem to be a few picture theatres, a couple of local dances and one or two Espresso cafe lounges. Most noticeable was the fact that most of these places closed up at about 11.30 p.m. It is very hard to find anything at all to do or eat after 11.30 p.m., so if one is hungry one stays hungry.

Shops in Hobart close at about 7.40 p.m. and this makes shopping much more pleasant and enjoyable.

However, places of historical value such as the Museum and Art Gallery are not open, which is perhaps a pity.

When our group arrived on Thursday night, we all paid a visit to the town after having a good tea. It was found that most of us wandered aimlessly around and ended up back at the Coronation Hotel, footsore and weary. However, the Friday night was spent a little differently. A few of the boys visited the local picture shows, a few more visited a formal dance, a large number visited a casual dance at the Stork Club as soon as the wise ones, who were few, went 6

be a pity if more students do not take advantage of such trips in the future.

to bed. At about 2 a.m. it was found all were back at the hotel; sleep was the order of the day for all, except the bright lads who stayed up all night playing cards. It was evident next day who they were.

Saturday, the last day of the tour, saw us up bright and early, ready for our trip to the Australian Newspaper Mills at Boyer.

Well, those people who went to bed were up bright and early; the others caught up on some much-needed sleep as we drove the twenty miles along the Derwent Valley.

Within the last few months the Derwent River flooded (150,000 cusecs, compared with the usual 25,000), causing extensive damage to the hop crops, homes, bridges, roads, railways and factories—this cost the Government four million pounds.

The mill manufactures most of the newspaper used in Australia, newspaper being its one and only product. The hardwood timber is barked by hand, sawn into billets 7in. by 7in. by 4ft., ground to a fine pulp, mixed with water, an imported long fibre pulp and caustic-soda treated pulp, screened, rolled and dried, cut to lengths, and finally wrapped in brown paper ready for shipment.

Unfortunately some parts of the factory were not working; but a very interesting tour was had by those members of the party who were awake to appreciate it—we can't speak for the majority.

In conclusion, we should like to express our thanks to the organisers of this educational tour, in particular Mr. Waterson and Mr. Pellizzer, who accompanied the group on the tour. The tour was most excellently arranged and the hard work and planning that was put into the arranging was, we feel, richly rewarded.

Such tours as these add immensely to the education of students, not only as far as their particular field of study is concerned, but also in the field of geography and civics.

An important feature of these tours is the way in which the students live together as a group; living together in this world is one of the most important things in life, and these tours seem to supply ample opportunity. Also they provide for a strengthening of student-teacher relationships, which are important as far as education in this College is concerned.

The tour to Tasmania proved to be of great value and well worth while. It will

"Well, Jack, every month the Railways run an auction sale, where they sell up all unclaimed property."

How do the writers of this article know this?

They know because they are COMMERCE students, and unlike the useless engineers and chemists, they go on excursion, and one of their excursions took them to the Victorian Railways' Lost Property Auction.

FREE PLUG: If you have a son OR daughter, desirii^g to further their studies into a diploma course, send them to the FOOTSCRAY TECHNICAL COLLEGE COMMERCE DEPARTMENT, where they will be well educated (like the writers of this article, and unlike the impractical, industrious engineers and chemists).

At a Victorian Railways auction the goods are laid out on numbered shelves around the wall of a store room, as the goods are auctioned off to eccentric members of the crowd (who are scavengers of secondhand goods) the auctioneer is wheeled along from shelf to shelf in his auction dais.

People who consider women not to be careless and forgetful, could be well straightened out by a visit to the Victorian Railways' auction, where over one hundred women's umbrellas alone were auctioned last month. Of course, men are often forgetful and careless, for instance, like leaving bathtubs and bicycles on platforms and in carriages; and common sense reveals how easy it would be to leave a bathtub in a doorway of a carriage and forget to take it with you while climbing out of the window.

A large array of goods was obtainable at the last auction, but the predominant articles were lots of two dozen, sixteenounce cans of rice pudding (someone must have lost a rice pudding factory, because at least one in four of some three hundred lots was rice pudding).

So if you ever see any of your goods which were lost on a railway trip displayed in the windows of a secondhand shop, you will know where the dealer obtained them (because railway auctions are crawling with such businessmen).

Persons attending these auctions should be very careful about blowing their noses or waving their catalogues in the air, as the auctioneer may take it that a bid has been made for the goods he is auctioning— there were quite a number of withdrawals from indignant people who found themselves in danger of being the proud owners of two dozen tins of rice pudding. The only people who shouted their bids were casuals, and not the dealers, who are old hands at the game and prefer to bid silently, thus preventing opposition dealers from knowing who is bidding against them.

It is worth while attending these auctions and we COMMERCE students displayed our keen business sense by successfully bidding for sports shirts at prices ranging from 12/6 to 15/- each. (But later found that the shirts did not fit; bad deal? HUH!)

Six brave girls have weathered the year with credit to all concerned; for they became a welcome addition to the College, not only in classes, but in other College activities.

They undoubtedly made their mark in the drama club, in which they all participated and helped to make "Enduring as the Camphor Tree" the success it was. They were present on the S.R.C., took part in swimming and athletics, and have made it obvious that what this College lacked in previous years was the feminine touch.

As the Commercial Certificate Course lasts only one year, we wish them luck in careers, hope they will come to our dances next year, and look forward to the intake for 1961.

Remember the roar which greeted the Principal at Assembly last year when he announced the commencement in 1960 of commercial classes for girls? Joyous anti8

warm up on petrol or are externally heated.

This crawler was fitted with a bulldozer blade which effectively moved a large mound of earth. Though the machine was so massive, its stability is comparable to that of the conventional crawler; it is stated that it is stable up to a slope of 60 degrees, which is pretty good considering it weighs over 20 tons. The machine was the International T.25 crawler with a 159 h.p. rating and costs approximately £24,000.

Another piece of equipment worthy of note was the TD.20, fitted with a Rolls Royce engine. This is a really beautiful piece of equipment and develops 88 drawbar horse-power. As well as this, the dozer blade may be rotated in the horizontal.

One piece of equipment which caused some amazement was the Hough Payleader which is called a "four in one." The expression four in one comes from its wide range of application. It can be used as a bulldozer, a scraper, a front end loader or a bull clam. This machine is powered by a 76 H.P. Hercules engine, and for a rubber tyred vehicle has amazing traction powers.

This has been accomplished by means of having water in the tyres—filled to 12 o'clock with water and air filling the remaining space.

Amongst other equipment inspected were smaller crawlers, and a diesel shovel. Unfortunately, at this stage of the afternoon the rain really began to pelt down and we were forced to adjourn to the bus; where our guides answered any questions we had and explained to us the operation of some of the grading equipment.

Despite the poor weather, the students who attended had an educational afte noon; not only from the earth moving equipment side, but also from the angle of road work and traffic engineering: for we went through some areas with various types of roads and on our way home we arrived at Princess Bridge at 4.50 p.m., traffic engineering at its worst.

"CAVEAT EMPTOR" "Caveat Emptor"; this means, "Let the buyer beware." The phrase could also be applied as a warning when signing all documents and contracts.

Recently a middle-aged woman became involved with a Dancing Academy and as a result of high-pressure salesmanship found she signed contracts, which, if enforced, would have cost her over £3000. The result was a court case, presided over by a judge and jury of four, not twelve as in criminal cases. We of the Commerce School attended the hearing and saw at first hand the various contracts produced before the Court. Before the case concluded the lady accepted repayment of £600. If she had not taken this matter to Court she would have lost this money.

There is a lesson in this for us, as these dancing schools are not averse to making a quick nickel from infants (in law, any person under 21). We heard of a young lady who, within minutes found she had signed a "noncancellable" contract for dancing lessons to the tune of £25. Ten lessons at £2/10/each—we are in the wrong profession. The lass received a letter reminding her that the contract could not be cancelled. However, you will be pleased to know that unless dancing lessons can be proved a necessity or in accordance with your station in life, infants cannot be made to pay for these lessons, and this young lady did not have to pay.

Our advice to you fellows who like to trip the light fantastic—don't sign anything until you have taken it home and discussed it with your parents.

RON CLELAND, RON HISLOP, 5F A N EXCURSION TO I.S.A.S. Some of the third year civil engineering students visited the Dandenong section of International Sales and Services, a branch of Internatonal Harvesters. The purpose of the excursion was to see a selection of earth-moving equipment, essential tools for civil engineers, in operation. Unfo r tunately, rain prevented a thorough inspection; but the information gained was beneficial to all.

All were impressed by the giganfic size and immense power of the new type of crawler containing a torque converter, a recent development in diesel engines. We gasped when told that the engine was a direct start to diesel. Usually diesel engines

A "Sun" article of October 20 this year, features the story of Mr. Mott's subsequent progress and fulfilment of his youthful ambition. He is now manager of the ÂŁ20 million Dreadnought project for Vickers Armstrong (Ship Builders) Ltd., which has built and launched Britain's first nuclear-powered submarine, and he will supervise its fitting out and take part in the trials before the submarine is handed over to the Royal Navy.

Mr. Mott completed his Diploma course in Mechanical Engineering in 1943, then graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Melbourne shortly after the war.

A Dafydd Lewis scholarship took him to Britain, where he gained wide experience with Vickers Armstrong. After this he became the supervising engineer for the construction of a bucket dredge and a steam hopper barge, both built on the Clyde, for the Melbourne Harbour Trust.

Mr. Mott is only one of many College diplomates who have made their way to positions of great responsibility, and the College feels pustified pride in having given him the substantial basis of an engineering career.

As well as fabrication work, Johns and Waygood's have their own galvanising plant.

This is done to place a protective zinc coating on structures such as television towers, which are exposed to extreme weather conditions.

It is firms like Johns and Waygood which take the trouble to organise tours over their premises in order to stimulate and educate the future engineers of this country, and for this reason we are deeply indebted to them.

W.J.R., W.J.T. A LAMENTATION TO A N ENGINEER'S SWEETHEART Hear my advice, do not marry an engineer; for an engineer is a queer creature, possessed of many devils. He talks in eternal parables, which he calls formulae; he wields a stick which he calls a slide rule and a handbook is his bible.

He thinks only of serious matters and seems not to know how to smile.

He takes his seat in a car by the springs in it, and not the damsel.

He knows a waterfall only as a power source, or a forest for its calorific value.

He always carries his books with him and entertains his sweetheart with steam tables.

AN EXCURSION TO JOHNS AND WAYGOOD'S, SANDRINGHAM The third year civil engineering students inspected the drawing office and workshop of one of Melbourne's foremost structural engineering firms, Johns and Waygood Pty. Ltd., situated at Sandringham.

These people use the latest techniques in the field, so that they can produce their structures in the shortest possible time, while still maintaining safety, economy and good workmanship. It is for this reason that they are engaged, under contract, in such an important project as the King Street Bridge.

We were fortunate enough to see the final stages of the fabrication of one girder, of 150 ft. span and 9 ft. depth. As can be appreciated, there are many problems to be solved in transforming a sheet of plate steel into an aesthetically designed girder spanning the River Yarra.

In construction work, welded joints, etc., are preferred to their riveted counterparts.

However, in the mass production of roof trusses it is easier and quicker to provide 10

College Pennants for 1960 were bought by the S.R.C. and made available for sale to the students, who were very enthusiastic when they ordered the pennants, but seemed to lose interest when confronted with a bill for 5/6.

The Council was also responsible for numerous small improvements throughout the College. Most of the problems were dealt with through Mr. Beanland, who was considerate and co-operative during the year.

STUDENTS' REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL The S.R.C. this year consisted of a record number of student members. This was due to a greater influx of fifth year students.

For the first time since its inception 14 years ago, girl members from the newly introduced commercial class were elected to the Council.

MOTHERS' CLUB The Mothers' Club has a fine record of service to the College over the years, and we are proud of this record. The importance of mothers taking an active interest in the work of the club cannot be overstressed.

From such activity mothers gain a wider knowledge of the work at the College, and get to know the members of the staff and appreciate their problems. Students naturally become interested in mothers' activities, which develops a greater pride in their College and must lead to better results.

The S.R.C. has been quite active this year, beginning with the S.R.C. Luncheon for new students; the speech of welcome was given by the Secretary for 1959, R. Cruise, who stressed the importance of the S.R.C. to the students. He also pointed out that not only should the students endeavour to be successful scholastically, but they should also take an active interest in sport and social functions organised in the College.

This year the S.R.C. obtained a new table tennis table for the basement and it was used to advantage by the College Table Tennis Club.

The Mothers' Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at Nicholson Street, at 2 p.m. This year has been quite successful. We have made visits to various factories and other places of interest. One of the highlights was the Birthday Luncheon, at which we were entertained by the College Junior Boys' Choir, and Mr. R. Schutt showed a very fine film of the Scout Jamboree. Another function eagerly looked forward to is the College Mannequin Parade, which will be held on 30th November, at Nicholson Street, at 8 p.m. The last meeting for the year will be on 6th December, also at Nicholson Street, at 2 p.m., and we look forward to seeing as many as possible at this meeting.

On behalf of the Mothers' Club I want to pay tribute to the work of our past President, Mrs. S. Curwood, and to express appreciation for the services of our Secretary, Mrs. F. Bennett, and to members of the committee and all who helped to make this year's work successful.

including missionaries, clergymen and the representatives from the central organisation of S.C.M. Three book reviews have been given by members of the group, and besides exhibiting variety, they have provided excellent material for discussion and contemplation.

"The Big Fisherman," Lloyd C. Douglas.

"The Portrait of Dorian Gray," Oscar Wilde.

Religious films have also formed a part of the syllabus. So far this year four such films have been screened, and on all occasions a large number of students were in attendance. We trust that these films may have been of value to those who do not regularly meet with us.

Also introduced into the syllabus was an end of term service, in which members participated, and the Rev. Morgan gave a short talk.

Although our numbers are perhaps small in comparison with the number of students in the College, we feel that we are bearing witness for Christ and that with His blessing and guidance we may be able to go from strength to strength and become a force among the students.

S.C.M. The Student Christian Movement in this College has, over this year, been a virile and active group. We have increased our membership and are looking forward to increasing it even more in the future.

We are indebted to the services of the College Chaplain, the Rev. Morgan, who gives up his lunch hour every Thursday to meet with our group. President of the group is Bill Robertson, with Peter Austin as secretary. They are nobly assisted by a committee, and this committee, plus the president and secretary, are responsible for selecting the various syllabus items throughout the year.

Studies and discussions have been somewhat varied during the year, but we feel that our variety is both educational and informative.

Bible studies that we have undertaken this year include one on prayer, and another set on the parables. Both of these have proved extremely valuable and members ably participated in the following discussions. Also, we have had a number of speakers this year,

started out, seven returned safely. Our next trip was to Mount Donna Buang via Healesville, when four cars started out and three returned. The other, an "Ocker," stands to this day as a monument on the rugged slopes of Donna.

What a fateful day; lost were one car, three friends, and a fiver to Her Majesty's Constabulary. We proved on this trip that Vauxhalls can operate without oil, and on tyreless tubes; that Leo Jones can light a fire—given plenty of time and a dozen boxes of matches; that the saying "Damn the women" was originated by a very smart man; that cars with straightout exhausts are likely to prang; and that as always "CHEMISTS ARE SUPERIOR." SOCIAL COMMITTEE The activities of the Social Committee were increased this year to include the organisation of not only nine monthly dances, but a river trip and barbecue and a snow trip.

All these functions were not only successful socially, but also helped to swell the S.R.C. bank account and so were financial successes.

CAMERA CLUB This year the club has a membership greater than that of most other yea^s, with about forty members. Activities in the club have been varied and mostly along individual lines.

A certain amount of new equipment was purchased at the beginning of the year, and this created a boom in working conditions.

An immediate aim of the club now is to improve our existing 35mm. enlarger or purchase a new one.

A few lectures on photography have been given over the year, namely by Mr. Lewis and John Walsh.

President of the club over the year has been John Walsh, with the financial side of the organisation being ably handled by Mr. lohn Grainger. Bill Robertson has acted as secretary. The committee who have acted over the year have also given good service.

This is the report of the Camera Club for 1960 and it is hoped that bigger and brighter things will develop over 1961.

CAR CLUB Our main activity for the year was the National Road Safety Course, which consisted of weekly hour lectures at the College and monthly practical driving at the Showgrounds. About thirty students took the course.

Early in the year we organised a trip to Anglesea and, apart from the rain, this proved an outstanding success. Seven cars 13

DRAMA CLUB — C O L L E G E PLAY The student members of tne Drama Club, the young ladies from the office, and members of ine staff are to be congratulated on the effort that they put into this year's play, "Enduring as the Camphor Tree," to make it such a success. John Harsley was club secretary and Mrs. Stirling was the producer.

Unusual in many respects, the play presented many problems.

Because it was Chinese, difficulties arose; such as learning customs, eating with chopsticks and looking Chinese.

A further problem was that the play called for sound and lighting effects, such as thunder, lightning, rain, moonlight, crickets and muisc, to provide authentic sounds. Many ingenious methods were employed and, due to the co-operation and correct timing of Robin Davies and Len Wadell, remarkable results were produced.

Much interesting interval music was also played by these two.

The introduction of the girls' commerce class was an immense help in filling the female roles—and in making life more interesting.

At the beginning of rehearsals some three months before the performance, apparent lack of interest disheartened Mrs. Stirling, but thanks to her intense efforts, the play was brought to a remarkable standard. This lack of interest was mainly due to the jazz rehearsals that took place back stage, and also to an initial shortage of actors.

When the time came for the performance befo e an audience, most of the cast thought that it would not go so well. After the first few minutes it was obvious that their work had succeeded, and on the second night, Presentation Evening, the performance was even better—though there were not so many amusing interjections from the student-audience of the first night. The Chinese Consul was present and said that it was the best effort he had seen, although he had seen the play three times. This was quite a compliment and it helped reward the group for their very hard work.

Each scene of this tender love story was well introduced by a well-pigtailed Tom Main, complete with gong, who at times found difficulty in finding imaginary dried peas to scatter around the stage to ward off evil. The evil appeared in the bloodtingling form of Don Sargent as the evil

Lord Ku, who, beaten by Kung (John Harsley), for the love of the sweet Pumelo, enlisted the help of the tempting Fox Goddess and Woman evilly, yet enticingly, played by Janice Smith. Who could forget the dramatic scene when, with thunder booming (banged tins off-stage), and lighting flashing, Ku, with deep resonant voice, called on the enshrined Fox Goddess to curse Kung.

Kung, however, by playing the game of cricket (imagine the set changers sitting in a circle behind stage clacking clackers with much gusto) had won Pumelo's heart and she (Lynette Middleton) showed sweet tenacity in loving a later cursed and missing Kung.

She also showed her sweetness in real life by not complaining at the sundry bruises received.

However, Lynette O'Dea, her maid, Even Su-Su, supported her in her trials, eventuating with honorable rice at the right times. Chi Lin (Mark Edmonds) also proved a worthy friend and Dorothy Dix to Pumelo—and was also adept at eating imaginary dried peas with chopsticks. It was a pity that Pumelo's father, Shen Lo (Peter Austin), wasn't seen in the last half of the play, as he had a fine bearing—and a wonderful costume.

Kung eventually with a sword killed Lord Ku, who almost unexpectedly died of a broken neck instead, and who will ever forget his Escort's (David Waring) funeral oration lamenting the sad death—"Oh joy to lose you—heave him off, boys." David was also a poet, writing many long poems ("Oh Goggle-eyes . . .")

And such a happy ending could have taken place in no better setting than "The Inn of the Poet's Dream of August Springs," where the Innkeeper (Jack Simpson) and the Pretty Inmate (Irene Clements) so politely supplied cups of tea, and bowls of rice and honorable conversation.

While all this was going on, Margaret Higgins, Jillian Asher, Erica Schulzeff, Andrea Currie, Bill Main, Alan Cock and Keith McDougal were having great fun shifting scenery, keeping quiet, finding lotus ponds, burning incense, dropping weights, holding up fences and bowing honorably.

As Bill Main said, "Though you're working in the dark, behind the curtains is quite a lark." Peter Wolfendon added a fine touch of professionalism by taking revealing photos.

Before passing on to our classical studies, we were fortunate in obtaining Mr. A. Lumsden, who gave us an illustrated lecture on typical folk music. This lecture was very well attended, and all present found it extremely valuable and beneficial. After the lecture by Mr. Lumsden we then moved on to the more serious and attentive music, namely, classical.

Before moving into anything rather deep, we played a number of well-known pieces of a lighter sort.

Such music included "Bolero" by Ravel and the "William Tell Overture" by Rossini. These lighter pieces acted as an introduction and since then we have been gradually building into a study of more heavier pieces, some of which were Tschaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, "The Planet Suite" by Hoist, and the "Firebird Suite" by Stravinsky.

As may be seen from the above, we have had quite an active year and quite a varied one. Our main objective is to stimulate some sort of musical appreciation (other than rock and roll and other children's music) among students in this College.

Education in the modern world is becoming more specialised; hence it becomes essential to educate all the capacities of the human mind as well , as to train a specialist in a particular field. Music is in the group of activities that we term the arts, and as such most of us, to some degree, anyway, have some sort of appreciation for music.

Thus we can, if we choose, either develop this latent faculty or let it stagnate. Music, like art and sculpture, can be extremely pleasing and relaxing to the senses, and students in a College like our own can find ease, relaxation and enjoyment in music.

Not only is it beneficial to the senses, but it expands your general knowledge and education.

Today it is believed that engineers, chemists and scientists often know a lot about their own particular field, but precious little about the world in general. Thus we feel that the record club in this school is acting as a stimulus to the broader education of those students who attend, and is in this way serving a very real and worthwhile purpose in the daily life of this College.

Mr. George Johnson spent many hours painting scenery, as did the carpenters in making the scenery, while Mr. Robert Stirling helped give our western faces a Chinese slant.

Sincere thanks go to all these people, plus the Chinese Consul, and Messrs.

Howells and Holmes. Our Principal, Mr. Beanland, was a great encouragement in all things and the cast wishes to thank him for this and the dinner he gave, which put such a fitting seal on their efforts. As he pointed out at this dinner, the enjoyment and fun that is gained through taking part is reward enough, but all of us who saw the play say "Thank you" to the cast and helpers for wonderful entertainment. Here's hoping that next year many others join in and that the Drama Club will continue its success in the years to come.

HONORABLE L.W. V.F.T.S. This year the Tertiary Colleges around Melbourne decided to form a Federation known as the Victorian Federation of Tertiary Students. The Melbourne University S.R.C. instigated the formation of the Federation with the intention of bringing Colleges together so as to help each other solve common problems. Nothing really constructive has been done this year, although attempts were made to obtain Tramways concessions for students over 19 years; and Melbourne Technical College has started to operate a Co-operative Bookshop, which will be beneficial to any students who wish to use it.

The delegates sent by the Footscray Technical College S.R.C. were Bruce Stirling and Alan Welsh.

RECORD CLUB This year saw the recommencement of the Footscray Technical College Record Club.

The club is presided over by Bill Robertson, with Bill Taylor as secretary and Mr. J. Clancy acting as teacher-in-charge.

We commenced the year's programme with a rather short study of jazz. In this study we included a brief treatment of traditional jazz and New Orleans leading up modern jazz as expounded by Dave Brubeck.

We began the season well by defeating Caulfield quite comfortably in a practice match, and again two weeks later in the school match. The second match against Melbourne proved to be our only stumbling block, when we were soundly beaten by a better side.

After this setback, we went on to beat Swinburne quite comfortably. The highlight of the match was when Wendy Hosken suffered her first singles defeat at the hands of Neil Smillie. In the next match we won comfortably from the Ballarat team, which won only eight games.

We were disappointed that our trip to Geelong was twice cancelled because of wet weather. Just before the end of the second term, we played Coburg Teachers' College, and came out on top once again. The highlights were the pleasure of having Mr. Lawlor, one of our teachers, play for us, plus the win David Reed had over his cousin, Gloria Ritchie, in a singles match—a fortunate win, as he had boasted all the year that he could beat her.

Altogether Footscray has done better this year than in previous years, and it seems likely that, if the four younger members stay with the team next year, we shall win the shield from Melbourne.

All members would like to express their thanks to Mr. Baker and Mr. Lawlor for the support they gave throughout the year.

BASEBALL At the time of writing this report it was still undecided who had won the premiership, as the match between the two leaders, Footscray and Melbourne, was abandoned because of bad weather.

Except for a tie with Caulfield, 4-all, Footscray thrashed all the other sides.

The scores were 18-6, Swinbu-ne; 14-6, Ballarat; and 9-0, Geelong; with Bruce Kuhnell scoring the only home run.

The team's fielding and batting was very good, considering that some were playing for the first time. Bob Bitmead must rate a special mention, as he pitched well through most of the games. BASKETBALL The basketball team had a successful season this year, finishing third in the Victorian Basketball Championships and being beaten by one point against Box Hill in the Preliminary Final. Box Hill 51, Footscray 50.

During the season we won all but three of our games, through the good play of all players and the keenness and enthusiasm of our coach, Mr. W. Kingsley. It would be hard to pick a best player for the season, as all players played well; but top scoring honors would go to R. Tschudin, closely followed by F. Meeking and G. Sinclair, who played later in the season quickly built up a high score with good forward play and was a great help in the final against Box Hill. B. McDay was always at his best and never let the team down; he, too, had a high score. The defensive side of the team consisted of R. Carthew, K. Hanser, M. Curwood and B. Marsh, and they helped to keep the opposing sides down to a low score. Two others to play well were D. Carthew and M. Vellino; these two played wherever they were put and always did a good job in helping the side to victory.

TABLE TENNIS The College fielded two teams in the Western Suburbs Table Tennis Association and considering it was our first year the College went remarkably well. The most successful players in the teams were Man Yun Lee, who finished the season undefeated in Section CI, while Sonny Lau was only twice defeated (by the same player) during the year.

The teams would like to thank the Principal for his co-operation during the year, and also Mr. Hanes for his time and effort in making playing arrangements.

CRICKET The team, although seemingly unbalanced at the start of the season, moulded together an even batting list (with a few exceptions), a consistent opening attack and a relatively good fielding team, which proved itself good enough to be undefeated champions.

The batting and bowling averages were won by John Hird and Fred Jurgelait respectively.

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS, 1960 On Wednesday, 30th March, 1960, between the hours of 1.30 and 4.0 p.m., with the barometer reading 29.85 inches of mercury and falling, the temperature 80.2 degrees Fahrenheit, the wind north to northwest and gusty, and a high stratus cloud bank, a large proportion of the College assembled at the Hanmer Reserve to do battle on the field of athletics.

The meeting got away to a good start with confusion and disorganisation the order of the day, the problem being to distinguish competitors from spectators. This wasn't helped by the louder speaker system operating under such adverse windy conditions. In the first event, the 880 open, Peter Ewing displayed some of his form by winning by a distance of over ninety-eight links. Peter displayed his form again by winning the 440 open, and the 220 open; for some unknown reason he didn't finish the mile.

The aid of Science Fiction enthusiasts was enlisted to direct the discus throwing, for flying saucers were landing in the general position of anywhere. One unfortunate put his head in the way of one of these missiles, and was temporarily disabled. The discus suffered minor indentations.

was the first time this event had been included in the programme in this College.

As usual, the event of the day was the open mile. Mr. Harnes says, "It takes only four minutes to run a mile," but little does he know the students of F.T.C. The pace proved to be too hot for most competitors; of the twenty starters only four finished.

The time was 5 min. 15.2 sec.

At the conclusion of the mile, all competitors congregated for the presentation of the flag to the winning house. The Principal, Mr. Beanland, presented the trophy to the captain of the winning team, Bob Cruise, of Mitchell, who were victors with a total of 95V2 points, followed by Deakin 74, Monash 67, and Sturt 6 5 ^ . Mr. Beanland congratulated the competitors, spectators and officials for making the meeting such a huge success, and said that the "young fellows who are doing so well should do well at the inter-technical sports."

There should be a law concerning the sand pit for the long jump and high jump.

Teachers were working, i.e., force through a distance, therefore energy expended; teachers, who, similar to metals, like to persist in their lowest form of energy, were relevelling the sand. It was a pitiable sight seeing them with their ties off and shirts undone.

Organisation continued to run smoothly when a number of events clashed. Bob Cruise was in the open discus throw and the open high jump at the same time. Consequently Bob was a busy boy moving between the two activities. He eventually ended up by winning the open shot-put (he put the shot 31ft. 6in.) and the discus throw.

A record was almost set by W. Hoath in the 100 yards under 17 event. The record for this distance is 10.4 seconds— Bill's time was 10.5; but this was against a strong no r th wind.

The only record set during the day was in the women's 75 yards. L. O'Dea won in the record time of 10.5 seconds. This 19

demonstrated the admirable qualities possessed by the members of the Footscray team. Our vice-captain was one of the many amongst us who displayed such fanatical will to win that he glady demonstrated to us the usage of the open palm upon the opposition; thereafter he was referred to as "Punchy." Best players for Footscray: Sheridan, Malcolm and Schock. The scores: Footscray 8.21 (no misprint here) to Swinburne 4.5.

Although basically handicapped in physique—this is not meant to be a slur on the manly stature of our ruckmen—our team was able to take on the much bigger combination of Melbourne Tech., victory again resulting. Best: Gozhevski, Sheridan and Cousins. Footscray, 9.12 to 8.4. Ballarat was also accounted for in similar manner, for we kicked our highest score for the season of 14.13 against that of Ballarat

SENIOR FOOTBALL Rejoice peasants! Footscray has finally won the premiership for 1960 (no, not the League).

Our fast, rugged and brilliant team systematically annihilated all opposition to come through the season undefeated (well, almost anyway), adding more glory to this worthy' College.

Starting the season at Caulfield, the Footscray Tech. team lagged until half-time, but later dominated with its high marking, long kicking, loose man, and the play-on type of football, to subdue Caulfield completely, allowing only a few occasional scores from the opposition. The feature of this game was the uncanny accuracy of the Footscray forwards who, in the spirit of true sportsmanship towards our hosts, kept kicking points instead of goals. The best players for this game: Sheridan, Jurgelait, Cousins, O'Bryan, Schock and Stahls. The scores: Footscray 8.14 to Caulfield 6.11.

indefinitely, as was the repayment of the students' bus fares to Geelong.

Throughout the season, the half-back line played brilliantly and at every opportunity displayed their unselfishness by always kicking the ball to the opposition whenever their team-mates were not in position. The best exponent of this gentlemanly conduct was the centre half-back, whose action ensured that the forwards had to battle for the ball.

The back line, which consisted of a convert from baseball and a chemist brought out of retirement—he is getting too old for football, he says—cannot be faulted on their go-through type of football. They always had the game in complete control whenever the ball was at the other end of the ground.

The rucks, which are our only six-footers, showed that they COULD move their excess weight whenever they were bullied into it (typical lackadaisical attitude of the electricals). In fairness to them, it should be said that they were rarely beaten, and the heavier of the two improved his game tremendously from that of last season.

The centre line is by far the most fragile combination of the team—no insinuations are made, except that addition of weight would be an advantage. It is surprising, however, that they have one of the longest kicks in the side.

Our main strength, and I am saying this in complete sincerity, are our rovers—no superlatives can adequately describe their contribution to our premiership. The enthusiasm which they showed at nearly every game lifted the side to greater efforts. This is also true of the forwards and halfforwards.

At a certain practice match on a paddock near Melbourne High, about 25 (twentyfive) Footscray players took turns chasing an inflated pigskin. The team combined well and played magnificent football, without exaggeration, worthy of any kindergarten side in the whole of Victoria. The enthusiasm with which the team played was indescribable. The game at all times was vigorous and exciting. But it was mainly due to the captain's sterling, unselfish play that he was able to lead his team to a glorious and magnificent defeat.

The final scores for this match have been misplaced.

Gratitude is extended to a couple of bods from the Maths who not only seized the

opportunity to visit places of refreshment on Wednesday afternoons, but also helped us greatly to win this premiership.

EUGENE ROMANSKY. STURT HOUSE FOOTBALL Right from the beginning of the season, the Sturt football team has been raised on the idea of nothing less than a glorious and complete massacre of all opposition encountered.

Throughout the season we were able to establish a superiority over the rest of the "rabble" formally known as Deakin, Mitchell and Monash.

In our first game against Deakin, the team played magnificently and with instances of actual brilliance to bring about the inevitable annihilation of the Deakin team. The game was highlighted by the brilliant burst of speed that the Sturt football team was able to turn on—every hour or so. Most prominent player to do so was G. J. Walker who, regardless of his own safety, amazed us with his speed. It is not necessary to say that he invariably, if not always, lost the ball. Best players for this game: T. Smith, Roberts and Vivian. The scores were Sturt 4.2, Deakin 1.2.

The next team to suffer humiliation was Mitchell, when we defeated them by 40 points. The scores were Sturt 6.10, Mitchell 0.6. Our self-reliant full-back, T. Smith, played his most brilliant game, for the ball for most of the game was at the other end of the ground. Other outstanding players: Olver, Roberts and Crocker.

In the match against Monash, Sturt was narrowly defeated; actual scores have been misplaced, no record, therefore, is available for this column; apathy prevents me from finishing them.

Through this fine column I am happy to acknowledge the tremendous enthusiasm shown by the Sturt footballers by turning up at each game. Ours was the only House to field a full team consecutively.

Some of the excuses offered to the selectors for not being able to play are worthy of Adamski himself (Venus crackpot). One character, blessed with the name of P. Crocker, beat them all through a stroke of genius, by exclaiming that he would grow muscles on his legs, thus hampering other sporting activities.

The under 19 100 yds. free style was a surprise, not to the competitors, nor the spectators, but to the official photographer who was attempting to take a shot from a precarious vantage point: the gun fired, the competitors dived, the water rose, and our photographer was wet. His exclamation was (CENSORED—Editor).

The centre of attraction of the afternoon was the open 100 yds. free style, in which Leo Jones was to swim. Posters prior to the swimming sports advertised as follows: Come and see if Jones can break the 100 yards record.

The relay events provided fast and thrilling excitement, in particular the 4 x 50m. open. On the last change the competitors dived into the water and streaked towards the finishing line. After the judges had given their decision, the swimmers climbed out of the pool, that is, all except Alan Lewis. We then discovered, much to the embarrassment of the commercial class, that Alan had arrived at the finishing line, but the small piece of red material floating in the middle of the pool was his togs.

At the close of the day, when points were totalled up, it was found that Monash had a total of 9Vi points, Mitchell 35, Deakin 85, and Sturt were the victors with a total of 109.

Individual trophies for the day were won

by Saul Kybartas, of Deakin (C.R.T.S. Cup) and Irene Clements, of Deakin (The Ladies' Cup).

All teachers and students who acted as judges and officials for the meeting are to be commended for their services. Moreover, thanks must be extended to the competitors and the spectators and it is to be HOPED that every student will take a more active interest in the Inter-House function in 1961.

The selectors also feel sorry for not obtaining the services of an all-round sportsman, J. Carkeek, whose presence would immediately be felt, to the delight of the opposition.

Sturt finished this season with 224.5 per cent, points, to become the football premiers.

EUGENE ROMANSKY. INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING SPORTS 17th February, 1960 Under favourable weather conditions, only a small percentage of the Diploma classes attended the annual inter-house swimming sports, 1960. It was notable that most of those attending were either competitors or officials who had volunteered, or otherwise, to give some of their valuable time to help in the successful organisation and running of the sports. It was pleasing to NOTE the presence of young ladies from the day commercial course.

Many members of the staff occupied official positions such as announcers, recorders, starters, timekeepers and judges. Before the running of the first race, it was noticed that Mr. Thompson and Mr. Lawlor were standing at opposite ends of the baths— Mr. Thompson with starting gun, Mr. Lawlor with stop-watch. Evidently they were trying to measure the velocity of sound, but as yet they have not published their results.

The meeting commenced with a grudge race between Collins and Walker. It was established beyond doubt that Collins can still beat Walker over 50m. After this event it was evident that Judge Johnston and Judge Lawlor were showing signs of fatigue, so seats were provided at the finishing line for these gentlemen.

Event No. 17, the Ladies' 50m. Free Style, proved to be very interesting—Miss Clements, of Deakin, set a school record of 45 seconds. She won convincingly. Some things you should know: (a) It was the first time this event had been included in the programme; (b) Miss Clements was the only starter.

It is to be hoped that the Commercial Class will take a more active interest in the future.

Does anybody know the rules for breaststroke swimming? You don't? Neither did the competitors.

5C The future of the Chemistry World rests on the shoulders of 14 bright students in this year's 5C. These comprise the very few intellects from the various tech. schools (reform schools) throughout the surrounding districts. These include Williamstown, Tottenham, Glenroy, Coburg and Sunshine.

According to a certain chemistry instructor, 5C are destined to become a "pack of hack analysts." Needless to say, we contradict this statement firmly.

Interests of our form vary widely. We have a "Top 40" addict in Roy Matthews, who is also known as the form gambler; he will go so far as to bet on the colour of the next train to pull into the station.

Alex Gallagher, the Hot Rod fan, thrills us with his narratives and the advantages of overhead camshafts. The Lone Wolf (Wolfgang Schock) is the star footballer of the form, and besides this he is the most studious student among us. Incidentally, girls, he has been taking dancing lessons lately. Wayne Acreman, the "nice" boy of the form, has a great affinity for the opposite sex, especially Beryl. He interests us with his "boy meets girl" lectures, which are held every time an instructor leaves the room.

Max Douthat's main interests are in talking about Loretta, eating pineapples in Maths. IB classes and turning his home into a Chem. Lab. Bruno Crevatin, a keen student (on week-ends only) creates great interest among certain members of our form on Monday mornings, telling us of his thrilling parties over the week-end. Glen Collins, the form brain, finds great amusement in crashing across the countryside with the "Senior" Scouts and telling us of how the farmer chased them out of his paddock with a shot gun.

Ron Smith, the (weird boy) is so called because of his pecular habit of coming out with the most weird statements and mimicking Tarzan's calls and most of the animals.

Hugh Ford is the little bloke of the form.

Recently he changed his hair style to the

latest "coconut cut." He has not quite got over the shock and has a mania for drawing heads of people, at which he is quite successful—but alas—the majority of the instructors do not appreciate this habit as it takes quite a large portion of the blackboards.

Bill McEwan, the boy from the bush, comes all the way from Riddell to sit through a day down here; he always decides to leave promptly at 3.30 p.m. (We haven't informed him of the fact that school finishes at 5.)

His chief interest is chewing pen tops and finding out ways to evade Maths 1A lessons on Friday afternoons. Gilman Cheung, an outstanding feature of our form, is a dashing table tennis player. Occasionally he attends a Chem. lesson or two; where he spends the rest of his time nobody knows.

Ken West spends most of his time trying to avoid S.R.C. meetings, but always fails, as his conscience gets the better of him.

Peter Davis recently astounded us with his theory of variable constants. He often takes a stroll down the river at lunchtime. He is also the form's aircraft recognition fanatic.

Ray Crofts is about the best-mannered, most courteous, polite, well-behaved, quiet, selfpossessed student of us all. He spends most of his spare time (during Maths 1A lessons) trying to convince us of the demerits of slot machines.

After giving away a few of our secrets, we also would like to thank Mr. Gordon for taking us to A.C.M., and to Mr. Waterson for the Gas Works excursion.

5D The characters in this article are not fictitious; but how any living person has any relation to them is quite amazing.

ROBERT ANDERSON — Holds the coveted title of "Chief Test-Tube Breaker."

Besides having a flair for breaking testtubes, he is the only one in 5D lucky enough 24

to break a window in his first term at school. ANDREA BRUZZESE. One of the most controversial figures in 5D. Never is less than half an hour late in the mornings and after lunch. Spends most of his time staring out the window at members of the fairer sex. Always manages to get the right answers to his Chem. Prac. experiments, even though his apparatus has been "slipped a mickey." GEOFFREY "DING" BELL—Has an unusual head of hair, which houses an inquisitive brain. GERRARD BAKKER—Is one of the stars of the College soccer team. Also did well in his exams.

RUSSELL "MAVERICK" BROWN — Chief interests are—in order of preference— girls, gambling, and "singing." Brown's singing voice is a cross between Mario Lanza's and Frankenstein's grunt. RODNEY DINGFELDER—Tallest boy in the Form (in height, not in story-telling). Is also a professional test-tube breaker. JOHN "BUBS" DIGGINS—Makes quite a MESS of his Phys. Prac. experiments.

RICHARD EVANS—A farmer at heart. Enjoys reading "The Weekly Times." BARRY "DOC" FOREMAN—Makes many "humorous" remarks about physics teachers, etc. RICHARD HUTCHINSON — A professional "fixer" of Chem. Prac. experiments. JOHN "AXE-HEAD" HAXBY — Is constantly rescuing personal belongings from marauding bands of 5D bandits. MICHAEL KOHUT—Too darned noisy.

Is also a good golfer. JOHN KARIUK—Plays in the College soccer team. Also likes iceskating. BORIS KOUZMENKO—Did well in the exams., as you would expect from such a super, superior brain. DONALD LAIRD—Is a quiet, "unsuspecting" type.

KEN "LUVVY" LOVE—Tall, dark and handsome (sigh).

rather unnaturally, a good table-tennis player. BRIAN SHIELDS—"The Walking Brain" managed to get an average of 89 per cent, in the exams. However, he is a 1—y skater, but "with a little bit of luck" he might improve.

TED "BALDY" VIVIAN—Is the top English brain of the Form. Also plays in the College cricket team. KEN "WOODY" WOODHOUSE—Is quite a boy—sorry— a QUIET boy, who is also good at English.

(English teacher's comment: "Good show".)

IAN WORDSWORTH—Like a Scotsman, he is very economical in that he tells the same jokes over and over again. Likes iceskating. CHEAH TEK JIN—Quiet and studious, as shown by having owned two cars this year. FELIX FAN—Is also quiet and studious, until his screaming Vespa hits the road.

Despite biting comments, late trains, cheap apparatus, etc., Mr. Grainger managed to complete the Physics' syllabus in record time.

Our Fitting teacher, Mr. Namser, looks forward to a Thursday afternoon His favourite class, 5D, comes in ready for a well-earned rest—especially after the exhausting lunch times. But their hopes are dashed as, with the steam rising from their pens, the going gets tough. We are convinced that after the rush is over, he will be exhausted.

After a Physics lesson on Light, 5D students are walking around in constant fear of being hit by a gamma ray.

Mr. Delia, apart from consuming large quantities of baby food, teaches us Maths.

Barry Spooner, who is a constant companion to John Powell, is extremely efficient at rolling his own; he hardly ever wastes more than half a packet of tobacco in the attempt. Jeff Nuske—Ah! that physique is Form's lacrosse champion, and says that he has knocked quite a few players in his day.

Then there is Trevor Evans, who is very surprised if he arrives before 9.30 a.m., and so is everyone else. Geoff Rewell is one of our second row boys—he hasn't been able to graduate to the back row yet, but is still trying.

Finally there are the Asian students (I won't mention their names because I can't spell them), who astound Mr. Baker with their amazing knowledge of blackening test tubes and wrongly reading the labels on acid bottles in Chem. Prac.

Happy Concluding Note. Mr. Cock says we are the nicest Fifth Form. He's either right or wrong. But we always like to respect our dear teachers' opinions.

5E Here we are again, with the form notes of that muscle-bound form of brainy nohopers, 5E. The form conchy is a young genius going by the name of John Powell, who somehow managed to obtain a mark of 96 per cent, in the Chem. Mid-year exams.

Keep up the good work. This mark, of course, sent our dear musical-minded Mr. Baker into raptures; he is the proud plucker of a bush bass in the school skiffle group.

Ramar Schmidt and Ernie (Bilko) Cassar are the form's wrecker and explosives experts. Ramar, who is a walking tool shop, believes that a test tube is useful only if it has a hole in the bottom. Our two S.R.C. representatives are Ian Stoney and George Shields. George takes a delight in confounding Mr. Lawler with umpteen new and wrong methods of doing a problem in Maths.

IB. Ian is a very good student, who delights in trying to keep order in the Form (what a hope).

We also have a TV star in our midst, namely, Frank Urban. Frank has appeared on such notable shows as Club Seven, Club Seven and Club Seven. Peter "Unkle" Dause is the Form lover who is always dreaming of Sandra, and believes in telling everyone so. Mr. Baker's back row boys consist of such notable characters as Tim Ferguson, the boy with the strong-smelling pipe, called "The walking chimney"; Bill Brien, who believes that the only way to start a car rolling is by attempting a wheel spin; Jim Andrewartha, who realises that the exams are coming close and is forced to turn con-

5F COMMERCE It was interesting to note the ways in which the commerce boys of 5F dominated school activities throughout the three terms.

You name it, they were in it! Bill Main starred in the drama club as chief scene shifter. He played the pa r t well with his honorable ancestors. He also starred at the Drama Club's dinner by turning up late and sitting with Mr. Bennett. Arnold, TorrielL, Stumieks and Ron Cleland ran the school football team, while Main (the star) and Robert Chan played headball, I believe, or soccer, as others call it. Daryl Rogers, one of Jack Kramer's promising young ballboys for the 1971 Wimbledon championships singlehandedly won all the inter-school matches. Torrielli and Gunn ran the S.R.C. meetings, while the "mouse" Bresnehan presided as blackboard cleaner.

Anyone going near the table tennis rooms at about 8.30 any morning would hear screams and shouting coming out of the smoke bomb-filled air. The "Mouse" could be found in tremendous concentration at 26

the party, Ray Parry and Manfred Hufschmid—alias Terence Smith for Mr. D'Elia's sake. Highlight of the party was an item

by Garry Kemp and John Halliday, two up-and-coming musicians; at least that's what they tell us. Ronny Tsan was quite a livewire at the party and ended up giving a demonstration Samba; only one thing was wrong, it was with someone else's girl. Wally Ponomarenko proved he was a very hungry boy, even when the lights were off; what flavour lipstick was it you were eating, Wal? George Howe was the envy of the form with his new Austin Healey Sprite, even though he'd forgotten to go for his licence for several months. John Wilkinson's latest craze seems to be explosives; all being quite well until the police caught him and put an end to his escapades. Mike Tong's frequent absences may be accounted for by numerous excursions, so we hear. By the way, Mike, how come you not married yet?

Besides being the form conshy—conscientious lad for those who are ignorant—Bob Meincke spends his spare time at a secondhand joint by name of Kirk's, becoming a bigger skinflint than he already was.

Hark! what is that racket? It sounds like a steamroller; but actually it is only Peter Butler on his way to school on his so-called motorbike. Len Poperecznyj has quite a bad habit of driving around in his father's car, wearing a dark blue coat and a naval officer's cap and in the process giving other drivers quite a scare, especially when he follows them! Max Brighton just isn't what his name suggests, as his supposedly wellfounded theories are always frowned upon

by Mr. Faulkner. Unfortunately, there just doesn't seem to be anything to write about Frank Martell; he has not been seen in any of the local haunts, so we take it he must do his hunting further afield.

Jim Tunnecliffe won't come to any of our parties as he says he doesn't go to respectable parties. By the way, Jim, have you taken out Nessy yet. It was quite comical when Tom Main played the part of a Chinese in the school play, seeing he has a Scotch accent. Personally we think he only went to see the girls.

Graham Roberts, besides raving about Brenda—who is too high and mighty for him —is a fine sportsman, as he represented the school in football and cricket. Frank (lover) Meeking is quite a boy—so he tells us—

losing his normal three or four sets before school each morning. Why, even Mr. Porter noted his agility as he took some bats off him when he played table tennis on the table in Room III. But all is not sport. At nine every morning classes start for all except Bill Main, who is always late. Bill, God bless his kind Scotch heart, always arrives at four and a half minutes past nine. When interviewed by Mr. Dyall, he was reported to have said, "It's better to be late than dead on time; with traffic the way it is."

Another interesting event in the second term was when the "slot machine" champions of the world were late (mentioning no names). Mr. Mitchell was on the warpath and sent them into Mr. Dyall, who then thanked them and promised that if they continued to play the machine he would give them a pass, as he owned 50 per cent, of Slot Machines Incorporated.

The Form had several good excursions.

We went to the bank, the Mint, The Herald Office, G air's, Arthur Murray School of Dancing, and to the Stock Exchange. Mr. Mitchell controlled the streaks of terror so well that it was five weeks before Heinze found three fingers, apparently removed by some fascinating machine, in their baby food.

Mr. Dyall and Mr. Mitchell both proved to be excellent teachers. They were very fine chaps and with the help of the English and Maths, departments managed to get most of us budding young accountants through. It is unfortunate that the engineering students, who are perhaps not as bright as the commerce students, were not lucky enough to pick the right course. Our slogan—"Let the engineers build it, we'll run it."

GUNN. 6B After reading the previous reports, we suppose you are wondering what has become of all the intellectuals in this school; but never fear, WE are still here, all in the one form, namely 6B, so that we will not be contaminated by the scum of the school.

It seems that this form is the only one with enough socialites to be able to organise a form party. This little escapade went off with a bang, all laurels being awarded to our S.R.C. representatives and organisers of 27

having represented the College in basketball. The "lover" of the form is Ian Williams, who always raves about being good at sport, which undoubtedly he is, as he represented the school in swimming and athletics; but he would be a better sportsman if he did not chase girls so much.

6A We've just made a shocking discovery.

Most of 6A are ring-ins; Footscray just don't want to be mechanical engineers.

Still, we've got a good bunch. I don't know what they are good for, but what a bunch!

Take Arthur Watson—go on. Take him— he'd rather play table tennis than work, anyway.

Perhaps the most elusive boy in the form is George Gozhevski, as he never seems to be where he should be. Steven Wong is another character, being quite dumbfounded

by Mr. Roberts' calculus and so seeks his learning from a select few of the form.

Clarry Sprague is the form's fishing enthusiast, owning a wonderful set of lures for catching "beauties" Derek is a worthy exponent of the guitar, we are told, as well as being the brains—but not the beauty of the form. There is a thing often dumped near the school that Ray Lim tells us is his car; but frankly we can't imagine it as such by any means whatsoever.

Len Hayes seemed to enjoy immensely a certain 3UZ pop concert, filling his pockets with Hifi Club application forms in the process.

Eddy Vim seems to be the beauty of the form, in his elegant hand-tailored clotheswho's the girl, Ed? Keith Leslie is an enthusiast on flying, exhibiting his skill in making chalk fly straight to someone's head.

While you're lighting that pipe of yours, Ian LePage, how about telling us another joke?

Bruce Robbins is building himself a boat this year, it seems. Incidentally, Bruce, how about telling us where you got the metal for your trailer?

One person in the form who is hard to understand is Graham Buchanan; he has not yet made up his mind whether being a student is interesting or not. Next in line is Peter Webb. Peter spends all his spare time persuading girls to accompany him to his flat; to clean it up, he tells us.

Last, but not least, we'll bring to your notice Ray Grenfell, who tells us quite a story about the party and having been interrupted at an inopportune moment by a certain girl's mother coming home. In conclusion, on behalf of the rest of the form, we should like to congratulate Ray Parry and Ian LePage on their coming marriages.

If you are colour blind, there's Ken Brown and Stuart Black in the front row, with Alan Kenny, Peter Elliot and Kevin Sorraghan. On the sporting side we have Peter Crocker and his push-bike. Bob Anderson, Barry Smith and Colin Reed with their hockey sticks, etc.

In the recent wheelbarrow race we had one entry, David Carthew, and some very staunch supporters. There is a rumour that some of these supporters clashed with a certain Principal and lost their bags at the inter-technical swimming sports.

It's a pity you can't get marks for proficiency in the repairing of motor cars.

Geoff Leake, Ivan Bartlett and Herby Baker talk of little else, although someone reports hearing something about girls once. The boys probably thought they were a new type of car. Alf Bobek and Eddy Biggs have been seen admiring the scenery from the upstairs window. It must be a nice view.

The half-year exams came as a shock to a large number of our students and a lot of records were broken; but we don't believe it! We couldn't possibly be the worst students they ever had. Not with chaps like Tao Hai Sin, who is already odds on to be Dux of the sixth form.

Our representatives on the S.R.C. are Colin Maxfield and John Bailey, who go off at regular intervals to battle for our rights, "More pay and less work" and "Maxfield for president" are their battle cries. Graham Peverell is our tame comedian, but do I detect a hollow sound in that laughter? Perhaps he should get someone else to write his jokes or stop throwing his bag out the window. But as I said, they aren't a bad bunch, despite the fact that most of them will probably be out looking for a job soon if their marks do not improve.

game of football. I have heard that in one game this year an amusing incident occurred.

Lindsay, while playing in the ruck, picked the ball up at full-forward position and booted it the wrong way; as a result he was chaired off the ground by the other side.

GARRY WOOD—Garry has developed a bad habit this year, that is, always being well ahead with his Metallurgy projects. He also commits the inexcusable sin of actually liking Geology, and to top it all off, he even collects rocks. I don't know what Garry expects to gain out of all this, except a pass at the end of the year.

TERRY OUGHTRED—Terry has two hobbies—playing tennis and collecting girl friends—and from what I've heard, he is very proficient at both. In his spare time Terry does a little school work, just enough to enable him to top 6C at the mid-year exams.

RAY PERRING—The scene was set for another dead period of Tech. Chem. Ray was trying his hardest to sleep, when all of a sudden he was completely engulfed in a voluminous cloud of white smoke, which quickly spread throughout the room. But, due to Mr. Finch fearlessly forcing his way through the white blanket, the source was discovered and disposed of. Ray was then revived.

JOHN McINTYRE—One of the quieter members of the form, whose main pastime, apart from passing exams, seems to be beating Tony Seelaff and Co. in the lunchtime game of Poker.

TOM O'BRYAN, DOUG HAGGART, BOB PARK—These three debonair young gentlemen are all well-known personalities on the sporting field, especially football, where all three play in the school team.

Tom was nearly blackballed from this society because of his association with a certain member of the teaching profession. Doug is one of these casual dance fanatics, who can be seen of a Saturday night, entering such dives as the "U" Club, instead of staying home by the fire with a good book as all conscientious students should. Bob is the more conservative of the group and possibly also the most athletic. Apart from playing the full year in the school football team, Bob also represented Footscray in the inter-school athletics, in the high jump section.

6C The year 1960 has had its up and downs as far as the chemists of 6C are concerned.

On numerous geology excursions we outwalked, out-talked and generally out-witted our slow-witted friends, the UnCivil Engineers. 1 will now give you the obituary of the late 6C, who, as you are reading this, will be approaching the doubtful honor of being called 7C. GEORGE SANDILANDS—If George is still intact, and able to return next year, it will not be George's fault. He seems to think Mr. Waterson is being unreasonable in not letting him keep a 101b. jar of potassium chlorate in his locker, just because it was potassium chlorate that caused the biggest explosion before the H-bomb a few years ago.

RAYMOND HORSEBOURGH—It was not until the school excursion to Whyalla that Ray's musical talent was discovered, but he fooled us all in showing his skill on the wobble board, in the Skiffle Group formed on the excursion. By lettirtg one's imagination run riot one can actually hear music come from this instrument with Ray behind it.

NEIL McMAHON—Neil was a great asset to 6C through the examination period as he kept the morale of the form high with his infinite supply of witticisms even when marks were very low. This character has the charm of "Maurice Chevalier," feet like Bugs Bunny, and a haircut like the shaggy dog; he is a crazy mixed-up character, who always seems to get above average marks in exams.

BRIAN GARRETT—Brian is a strange type; apart from being a confirmed Beatnik, he actually seems to enjoy school work.

Although he emphatically denies it there is a strong rumor going around that he actually studies at home. The result of Brian's strange life is that he consistently gets top marks in examinations.

CLYDE RILEY—Although Clyde always looks as though he's standing in a hole, this optimistic Carlton supporter (I say optimistic because everybody knows Richmond is the only team worth following) is always ready to defend the honor of his team with pencils, rulers, wash bottles or anything else he can get his hands on.

LINDSAY BURKE—Lindsay, although being the quiet type, indulges in the great 29

JIM WELLARD—Jim is another of the football enthusiasts, playing in the Essendon District League. He also showed his ability to deal cards by cleaning out Tony SeelafT and Fony Perrin on the S.A. trip.

KEVIN BENEFIELD—One day the school will get a half-holiday; Kevin will arrive early, i.e., before 9.30, and we will get the holiday to celebrate it. Kevin is another of the quieter members of the form, who seems intent on passing exams.

In the story you have just read only names, places and dates have been changed to protect the Guilty. This is an actual account as taken from the files of Russell Street C.I.B.

who is undaunted by the fact that he passed all subjects in the mid-year exams (except one) he's hoping to at least fail two at the finals. Bill was the ever-constant companion of Jeff (owyagoinmate) Anderson until Jeff was paroled early this year. Ken is a fascinating form of life, who hails from as far away as Preston. Ken could not really be included in this group (mainly because we aren't sure that he knows what a girl looks like). But for lack of a better place to put him, he was placed here. Ken was almost thrown out earlier on account of his cavorting and fraternising with some Mechanicals; but we condescended to allow him to stay. A constant enemy of one of the swiftest teachers in the school, Mr. Lawlor, Ken has officially been assigned to the "rock pile" for the remainder of the year.

G. SMILLIE, 6C. 6D Tradition usually demands an introduction to form notes, but as we are nonconformists anyway, we shall dispense with this trivial matter.

The form itself is split into smaller groups, of which we shall first deal with those known within the form as the lady killers, i.e., Geoff Sinclair, Pete Rankin, Graham Palich, Alan Nelson, Bill Ramsay and Ken Edgelay. All of these magnificent specimens of the lowest form of masculine humanity appear in such places as dances and milk bars and, in general, wherever the female of the species is to be found. Geoff is the athletic type, with a torso that would make Mickey Hargitay blush. He delights in stunning you with his impressions of "Gabba" or "Onga." Pete, on the other hand, is the "Marlon" type, who looks, talks and smells like a beatnik. He is also a confirmed jazz fiend, who goes into an uncontrollable trance at the sound of the word "Brubeck." He also has a natural dislike for dry cleaners, for he attempted to press his own trousers, to no avail.

Graham, being the youngest in the form, has the natural talent of being well built, dark and handsome. (Who needs anything more?)

Whenever he passes a group of girls he is immediately swamped by biting, kicking, punching "charlies." Ah, cruel world.

Alan hails from the City of Northcote and is an ex-Collingwood hoodlum. He is the friendly kind who talks to a strange girl for five minutes and then she's taking him home to mother. Now, Bill is a strange one.

Dux of the Footscray junior school in 1958, he is a regular "livewire." A clean-cut lad

While talking about rocks we come to another group, consisting of John Valieukevacius, Otto Pfeiffer, John Blackwell and Allan Welsh, who are officially recognised as the "giggling goons" (or golliwogs). Rocks are the reputed constituents of Blackwell's skull; but as yet nobody has taken the time (or found a meat axe) to find out. John, who revels in the nickname of "Stork," came fresh from Preston with Ken Edgeley and found his way into the football team. It was rumored that he was really just trying to find his way home when wandering across the football field and brushed against another student. When the officials saw that he remained standing, they immediately signed him up. As yet no confirmation of this report has come to hand. John "Visciuous or Veeshuss" Valieukavacius, forever in need of a haircut, is the form's "con" man. He spends most week-ends attached to a glass of one kind or another and has the ability of, while demonstrating how battered and worn your slide rule is fast becoming, talking you into giving him a ride to the Ballarat Road Section, placing two bets for the football on Saturday, and selling you his slide rule. All without you saying one word!

Otto gets the blame for John (he gets the blame for everything else, anyway). An industrious lad is Otto, who hates work, writing, work, problems, work and Chemists.

Whenever he gets past arguing football, he is to be found cluttering up valuable floor space in the dark room. Yes, Otto is an avid "shutterbug." Otto was also our 30

He and Benjamin are an inseparable pair and the rumour is that they are trying to hatch a plot for the assassination of Mr. Baker on the next Geology excursion. Tom Lim is always around when you need a "lift" in his car. Yet he still objects to people throwing ping-pong balls at him when he's driving. Tom is a happy soul who originally came from Malaya five years ago. He has even adopted the Australian habit of trying to get out of work. Sonny Lau is a permanent resident of Australia and came from Singapore originally. Also a table tennis fanatic, he is usually to be found at home.

A tall specimen of manliness is Sonny, and he can usually be seen doing push-ups or chin-ups.

Well, right now we are running out of ink, paper, room, insults and time, so cheers, but no tears, we'll be back in further years.

ALLAN WELSH & OTTO PFEIFFER.

General at the "Battle of the Soggy Flour Bomb," at which the Chemists were thoroughly routed.

Allan Walsh is the only boy in the form who thoroughly believes in being loyal to the one girl, even though he hasn't seen her for nearly a year. He is our representative on the S.R.C. and also represents the College in the V.F.T.S. Allan patiently waits for the week-end, when he can get both hands firmly around a bottle. At the College, like all good Civils, he never misses a chance to throw flour at a low-minded chemist or passing on any new jokes of a doubtful nature during Geology.

Next we pass to the "Brains Trust," Ron Sharpe, Ian McBain and John Hulme. Ron, an outstanding student in the study of the opposite sex, is good at his work, too.

Instigator of all guided chalk flights, he has the mental capacity of a new-born ox when it comes to "flipping chalk." Troubled and bewildered by his rumoured ulcers, Ron throws on regardless and this year alone has the unequalled record of 1297 direct hits, 4028 near misses and 14 doubtfuls.

Ian is a very studious lad (all 6ft. 4in. of him), of which very little is known. Apparently of the strong, silent breed, he manages to stay unruffled in the most fiery of all chalk fights. John is another mystery man, who hails from Essendon. He is tall, fair and handsome (to a female hippo, that is) and unlike most others shows very few tendencies to capture himself a "heart."

In a class of their own are Saul Kybatas and Max Smith, a couple of blow-ins from 7D. Saul, being almost a permanent resident of the College, and having the label of "the noisiest bloke here," is now in his fourth year of senior school work and is hopeful of making next year his third in the sixth form. Max is a quiet fellow, when he's asleep (and even then he snores), but is sticking to his guns in repeating a year.

And last, but not least, is the brigade of Asian students, Heng Ying (Benjamin) Hsu, Kyhe Teng (Robert) Cheah, Peng Sum (Sonny) Lau and Thomas Lim. Benjamin is one of those types that over-indulge in maths classes. He came from Hong Kong this year and has blended in with our way of life like a native Australian. Robert, a member of our victorious table tennis team, always seems to be somewhere else when cleaning up at the Applied Mech. Lab. is necessary.

6E COMMERCIAL Bill Hoath—Convict outfit very reminiscent of Walt Disney's Beagle Boys. Has the rare gift of being able to pass exams while clowning in school.

Brian McKay—Has a notch in his guitar for every song he has murdered. At present trying to write a song about a girl called Denise.

Jeff Kenny—Took a girl home recently on a very COLD night. Both froze.

Robert McRae—Always advocating total prohibition. Funny thing, even drinks his water with alcohol in it.

Joan Murrie—Congenial host. Always entertains friend(s) at lunch time.

Chan Dai Chou—Has a peculiar fascination for French girls.

Derek Ye oh—Looks like taking out the best attendance award.

Harry Leung—An excellent film critic.

Richard Cheng—Wizard on the Stock Exchange. Bankrupt if not careful.

Tan Chitnuyanont—Gives tiepins to the teacher instead of apples.

Ng Tatt Chong—A real kangaroo. Greets everyone with "how ya goin mite."

Winston Sum—Last horse he backed ran with army boots on.

Andrew Kang — Complaining always about our railways service. Every time he arrives late, he says that the train went the wrong way.

The trip to Whyalla took the mask off many of the otherwise studious personalities of members like Trevor Smith, Graeme Collins and Geof Flather. Apart from discussing, in curious terms, the relative merits of various automobile performances, Graeme Collins and Geof Flather have returned to the universal subject, and as a result of damning evidence have revised their hitherto unshakeable opinions of this subject. Geof Flather fancies himself as a motor mechanic, but has been unable to prove it, except by keeping Gordon Weir's Standard on the road by timely maintenance, which improved the over-all efficiency of the machine, during the short half-hour recess.

Geoff Carkeek has accused Flather of devious, subversive activities of a surrealistic nature against the motor industry This is probably due to Carkeek's immense dislike of childish activities which have been prevalent since the introduction of Go-Karting to this State. Carkeek continues to gain top honours during exams and, although keeping the form standard up, deigns to set an ever harder task for those few who must strive for average performances. To be amongst it during English III, one must have decidedly idealistic tendencies, with a desire for intellectual adventure. It is then a case of doing battle with the superior mind of Mr. Porter. His efforts in finding an outlet for our searching minds have resulted in the solving of many gigantic philosophic problems.

Graeme Wood, Alex Newing and Kenneth McFarlane are the three "conshies'" of the form, who sit down the front row and absorb every word from the teachers, They are most helpful in informing us exactly what was said during note-taking, bscause most of the sound emitted by the teacher becomes the merest whisper at the back of the room by the time it has passed over the noise of the classroom. It is to this end that a lapel microphone was proposed so that both teacher and students could have their way, allowing the discussions on politics and sport to continue without interruption. An ardent supporter of financial reforms and integrity is the form's expert capitalist, Eugene R. The effect of his austere presence lends support to the view that he considers all time not earning money

7A This form comprises a collection of the naturally superior mechanical engineers, who, having survived the perilous activities forced upon them by the Education Department in December last year, are slowly achieving amazing results in all spheres of intellect. It is from this highly intelligent bunch of radicals that the future brains of the engineering world will come; and it is our pleasure to astound the outside world with some interesting facts about our extraordinary internal and external activities.

The outstanding mistake of the year was made by Collingwood's Second Eighteen when it decided to challenge Footscray's right to engage in the preliminary final. The weight of this mistake was felt by Will Sheridan, who collected a broken collarbone from one of the locals. He chooses to forget the whole incident, mainly because he cannot remember it, anyway, having woken up in hospital the following day. Will, Hank and Crocker were not successful in getting Mak out to the fields; but their efforts will be remembered by all those who went to Whyalla and can remember that eventfuf night.

The mechanical engineers kept the school football team going by supplying its captain and four others in the persons of Eugene Romansky, G. Weir, W. Sheridan, K. Thornycroft and G. Jurgelait, all of whom gave sterling service and aided the team's rise to fame and fortune in winning all its games so far. Rumours have it that they could take off the premiership this year and the next. The deciding game against Geelong was held up by bad weather when the Barwon River flooded the Geelong ground.

We now come to that inevitable subject of romance, which has done more damage to the form's morale than could be recovered by the football or the mid-year exam, results.

The ominous presence could not be cancelled out even by the form's three misogynists, and the litter of Cupid's broken arrows could perhaps brand this year as the Year of Broken or Separated Romances. It has been "celebrated" by Eugene, Mocca and Hank, who all felt the impact during this year and have gained the form's sympathy in all respects. After remaining so true, Mocca is slowly overcoming the initial shock and is again taking part in the discussions 32

completely wasted. He has, however, found an outlet for his fervent desires in the form of professional photography, hairdressing and draughting.

No two more contrasting personalities could be found anywhere than those two chaps, Lessa Johnson and Doug Roberts.

Lessa Johnson would be mistaken for a "conchi" if it wasn't for the fact that he never sits in the front row and says nothing or little at all about nothing, or little at all. Because he must be in by 12 o'clock he has never been seen guarding any chicks from the wolves on the way home from the dances and this could account for his selfassurance and unusually high marks. However, the first voice to be heard upon entering any room containing 7 A is the highly audible shout of the form's mouthpiece and confidence man, Doug Roberts. Well known around the nurse's home at the Children's Hospital, his frequent outings are the scandal of the form, because he alone has that secret formula which obtains for him a balanced MG engine over Christmas.

Because he is still doing Matric. English, Graeme Johnson cannot be placed in the same class as those violent capitalistic extremists in English III, but his adventures rank closely with Romansky's and it is only the fact that Singers are not as good as Austin Healeys that keeps Graeme from joining the upper bracket financiers of the form. He and Gary Jurgelait are planning a large-scale attack in the final exams, and their intensive study is earning derisive comment from all those who would rather fail than stoop so low as to study. Gary Walker and Gary Jurgelait are among the bike-riding enthusiasts who can often be seen through car windows as they yield to that fanatical urge to ride to Ballarat Road in the rain.

7D This year saw the recommencement of the Diploma Course in Civil Engineering in this college. Although many obstacles have been placed in the path of our high calling, fifteen gentlemen are progressing towards victory through the fortitude which is an exclusive virtue of civil engineers.

In charge of the department, and in fact the only engineer (civil) in the college, is Mr. W. J. Kingsley, B.C.E., Dip.Ed., M.L.L. A.W.L., R.C.S.E., M.S.C.I.I.A.E.S., who, working under extremely adverse conditions, is competently carrying out a mammoth task. He is proving to be invaluable; actually we couldn't do without him.

Although we are not many, what we lack in quantity we have in quality, as can be seen from the following selection: Alan Lewis—he is the only person we know who has one meal a day; it lasts 24 hours; discovered that Newton's law of gravity is invalid (Lewis' law is that gravity acts away from the centre of mass of the

It is always easy to describe an eccentric; whether Trevor Smith is emulating one or actually is one, your own conscience can decide. This self-reliant, arrogant, nearlymarried man astounds us with his capacity for hard work in drawing design.

Whether the girl he marries wfll bake apricot pies or not (which this pie eater thrives on) Trevor tries to teach every girl he meets this fine art. Otherwise, beyond a few dozen other faults in his character, this bod is quite popular in this College.

Alan hopes one day to be a teacher. Furthermore, we have been plagued with two other student teachers: Alan McPherson, who plays cricket in the college tennis team and Robert Bitmead, who has now graduated from the girls' rounders team into the baseball team—is there a difference?

Gold fever frequently strikes our form.

Neil Pearson and Graeme Rathbone are allergic to this disease and are often to be found in outback regions of Victoria panning in creek beds for the elusive auriferous material—that's what they say; however, we suspect an ulterior motive.

David Lumsden is the most recent convert to the school which believes that "pedestrians are a dying race." Since he obtained his licence some months ago he keeps up an average of five pedestrians a day; before breakfast, too.

"Better late than never" is the policy of Caruso Lee Hung Nein, commonly referred to as Charlie Lee, who often appears at lectures a little late. Caruso, with Tieng Yu King (known as Tieng Yu Harry) and Wing Ching Peng comprise the Asian members amongst our group. Caruso is an ardent swot merchant (or so tells us, anyway) and Tieng is interested in photography and even knows what the function of a camera is.

Wong keeps his interests secret.

One of the few remaining motor cyclists on Victorian roads today is Len Wadell.

Len is a lad who left Swinburne Tech. to come to this superior institution of technological learning. Len haunts the roads on his sawn-off sickle at all hours of the day and assures us that he does not hit more than 40 around the town (i.e., pedestrians).

William John Robertson (alias Cherrybob I, Bob Cherry, Jim Springgs, Fred Smith), the advocate of the Rhubarb and Custard Sandwich Eaters, R.C.S.E.) has been hiding behind a beard of late. It is beyond our power to understand the reason for this sudden outburst of luxurious growth; but we are assured that it imparts intellectual qualities. Bill is an active member in many organisations in the College, a few being President of the Record Club, President of the School Christian Movement; Secretary of the Photography Club; and Leader of the Opposition on the School Representative Council. His influence in the College is

invaluable, although some members of staff may not agree.

The lad in the form sporting a muchvalued prefect's badge is one William James Taylor (Cherrybob II). This conscientious student is found around the College at all hours. Unfortunately this ardent member of Cherrybobism shaved off a very distinguished mo. Bill Taylor is also a very active member in College circles, being secretary of the Record Club and an active member of the S.C.M. and S.R.C. This bod managed to collect top marks in the midyear exams.

These last two students, being active Cherrybobs, naturally claim that Cherrybobism is the Ism of all Isms. They assure us that the Cherrybobs are expanding their membership and may one day place a member in Parliament. This group of intellectuals have as their chief emblem the Missouri Fish and have the game of Tiddlywinks as their national sport. This game is better played at 2 a.m. under candlelight.

Perhaps one of the quietest students in the form (or so we think) is Alex (alias Sandy) Dobbin, and a most enterprising and forceful chap.

The two terrors of the form are Bill Richards and Kevin Hence. Bill is the only cyclist in our group, while Kevin is a cool and calculating type of chap, with always something up his sleeve (his arm).

At odd times we have a number of visits from chaps doing some third-year work and some second-year work and some first-year work. These visitors include Saul Kybartus, Max Smith, Tommy Lim and the honourable Tony Tan. Such is the membership of the illustrious 7D. Despite a not very pleasing pass rate in the mid-year exams, it is possible that with a little more work a number of students will manage to pass the finals and enter their names in this magazine next year as 8D (for civil).

THE COUNT DA VIES PERCUSSION GROUP

By The Baron During the year of 1960 a strange, wonderful and new era began in the field of modern musical entertainment. The "Count Davies Percussion Group" was born and with it a new sound in jazz. This fascinat34

reception that they were given, there was no doubt as to its popularity, especially with Mrs. Stirling, the producer of the play.

As time went by, the members of the "Group" had to meet the demands of their studies and so the original "Count Davies Percussion Group" was disbanded late in August. However, after the examinations, the members are certain that a new and still better "Group" will arise to continue giving the people the utmost in modern percusssion

ing and wonderful "Group" came about entirely by chance.

When the Drama Club was rehearsing for the school play, a few of the members began to fill in time during "breaks" by . playing various musical "instruments." New and exotic sounds drifted from behind stage.

Then it happened. One afternoon late in May, the most ethereal sounds began to fill the Assembly Hall. The original "Count Davies Percussion Group" was evolved.

To the rhythmic beat of the "Group," audiences listened in amazement, vigorous applause greeted players after performances and encores were demanded. The original "Group" consisted of Count Davies as the leader, Earl Waring, Duke Byrne, Baron von Waddell and Lord Hutchinson. The Count, a young and handsome gentleman with a long musical background, played Triangle.

No one could possibly play mood music on a Triangle like the Count, his clear ringing tones were produced through many years of hard practice, and those who have heard him will fully appreciate this fact.

First published in the Shell Co.'s Borneo weekly "Salam," which gives the news in Chinese, Malay and English, the photograph reproduced here shows Philip Lim, Chu Kee Ching and Raymond Lim, together with Mr. Beanland and Mr. Bennett.

The Earl, with a musical pedigree like the Count's, was the "Wood and Ropist" of the "Group." His unusual instrument issued the most rhythmic beat imaginable. Harmonising with the Earl, was the Duke Byrne, a quiet and respectable Pogoist, who played for the love of music. There is probably no other person capable of producing such enchanting percussion from a Pogo Stick and in harmonising with the Earl, produced the most salient sounds beyond description.

In the melody section was Australia's leading jazz "Packetist," Baron von Waddell. The soothing voice of this top jazz vocalist, coupled with the excellent playing of his "Fluorescent Light Tube Packet and Wood" was enough to send any audience into a trance.

Finally, to provide the bass, Lord Hutchinson was called upon. This modest tall gentleman gave such a magnificent backaround with his "Thunder Board" that it would not have been the "Group" without Hutch. Such were the beginnings of the Davies Era. After their formation, the "Group" provided entertainment for the audience that came up to the Assembly Hall to watch rehearsals of the school play and from the

8th Form Idenification Line-Up BELL, ROBIN JOHN. First discovered on a mullock heap near Daylesford on 8 / 5 / 4 1 (actually Mornington was the place—the racecourse hospital). Dinger's major investment this year was a 1948 Morris 8/40 tourer which has turned out to be rather expensive and reshaped. His sust nance is reluctantly supplied by the S.E.C., who expect big things from him. Robin's spurof-the-moment temperament often has startling results, as when he left a speeding train too speedily.

CRUISE, ROBERT JOHN. First discovered that women differed from men on 2 8 / 2 / 4 1 and has since done extensive research on the subject. Bob is one of those public eye fellahs, being quite an influential figure in most college activities. He collects a fortnightly cheque from the Education Department, which finances his rocket and Joan, the most important of his school friends.

EDMONDS, MARCUS. Violated the facts of life by being invented on 12/1/41.

This could account for the many strange ideas Mark has put forward during this year.

He is quite a reckless sort of person and his motto is "If I'm okay, why worry about the next person, because he never worries about me."

However, he is quite a talented actor, having "tabled" a number of excellent roles over the years. Mark is one of the unfortunates who have to rely on private funds, but the supply seems to be ample enough to finance his accompanying several of the fairer sex.

But "walk slowly" Mark, it's safer that way.

BEYNON, IAN LLOYD. Became the output of an uncontrolled s y s t e m on 15/10/41 and subsequent physical expansion was unfortunately accompanied by mental instability. A byproduct of this instability was his interpretation of a mountain road which did not go in the expected direction. The result was a flight in space over a cliff that brought minor injury to physique and major injury to pride. However, recovery was quick and sure enough to enable him to play tennis with Mr. D. and bribe him, with Department of the Army currency, into passing Ian's experiments.

EWING, PETER HERBERT (Wheeler). Has just joined the distinguished band of people who are 21. It happened on the seventh of August, 1960, and to achieve this distinction while still at school he prolonged his stretch to five years. On a Monday morning poor old Pete just can't concent r ate; he stares blankly into space, thinking about the marvellous week-end he has just had. At one stage it looked as if he had really crashed for good, but unfortunately (for Peter) it wasn't to be so. His other spare time is occupied by athletics, and football.

CARTHEW, RICHARD FRANK. Was precipitated into a three-dimensional space during the thi r d of November, 1940, on the shores of the Merri Creek.

On passing into the murky waters he speared a longhaired mate after about one whole y ar of chasing. Proceedings are rapidly approaching to the beginning of an invitaion: the finance for which will come from the S.E.C. and lotteries. Being a great social lad Rick strayed off the track up at Cooma, but he says it was all for a good cause: making up with Fay. 36

FONG SHAU ON. Tom is a visitor from Hong Kong and usually is very quiet.

However, he is getting rather cheeky lately and is really telling some of the boys where to get off. Rather than be a brain and go by train, Tom acquired a car (how, we don't know, but he probably pinched it) during the year and now makes his ten-mile dash to school in it in five minutes. The cops will catch him one day, but he would probably leave for Hong Kong before the trial.

GRACE, PHILLIP HENRY. Ploughed up in the original Sunshine harvester works on 20/2/41. He has been heard hurling insults at all and sundry, including teachers (jokingly, though, we think?). Mr. Grace is a bit of a dark horse, having been spied entering Darrod's the style store in the heart of Bourke Street, the object of which, we think, was to buy something soft and flimsy for a close friend? Fed by the Education Department, Phillip has finance available to enable him to participate in forms of the good life.

HARRISON, GRAHAM KENNETH. Scraped off a destroyer in the Williamstown dry dock on 26/2/41. The salvage operation which followed lowered him to the level where he was acceptable to the Department of Supply, who finance him so as he can spend it on his Standard, Jill and Wellum. His car, by the way, has supplied Mr. B. with a couple of excellent service failures. Also it is really an education to drive with Harry and hear about the number of mug drivers there are on the road. Often has a hamburger breakfast at St. Kilda Junction on his way home from Narre Warren.

S. SARATO—Taciturn member of the class. Usually smartly dressed, and somehow manages to conduct experiments in the laboratory without dirtying his immaculate clothes. Sports a dubious handsome moustache for one half and a clean-shaven face for the other half of the year. May one day sport half a moustache throughout the whole year.

HARTONO ROFFI. Hailing from a warmer climate up in Indonesia, Roffi does not take kindly to the Melbourne weather. If it even smells like rain he will be home in bed snug under the blankets while all his pals are out basking in the alternate sun and ram. couple of weeks this year, Roffi ran a death trap (motor cycle), of which nothing was later seen or heard; so we can gather that the couple of grey hairs that appeared on his head have influenced him to terminate the association.

HEWET, ROBERT WILLIAM. Bob was washed aboard his father's customs launch on 2 2 / 1 / 4 2 (young, ain't he?) and educated in the Deeker, which, by the way, is the missing link in the chain of events that led him to the winning of Clare. His Deeker has so much power that Clare can be seen streaking away from it when H wie has it flat out along Nepean Highway. Sorry, Bob, but it had to come out that it doesn't go the best if the both of you aren't pedalling. Unattached as far as bread suppliers are concerned, it is definitely on the cards that Bob will become engaged in a legal contract with the girl mentioned above.

SZAKACS, LESLIE. Has been doing Matric. English with a certain gal since • ^ 20/5/40.

However, Les hopes that this is the last time. Szacky had a number r f of great jazz episodes on the Snowy trip, but since then has become established with Roslyn. A source of constant amazement to us is the way Les carries on with Mr. D. An explanation for this is much harder to find than for Les to be correct when he tells Arfie he's made another blue. But it could be due to the fact that both Mr. D. and Les are undisputed jazz fans or that the weight ratio between these two is about the same— although there is a substantial difference in altitude. A well-known unobtrusive frequenter of the Library, Les also likes Chinese meals, particularly the "pickled" items on the menu.

JONES, LEO JOHN. Reincarnated 5/1/41. Lives down Willy way and can often be seen cruising around this area in an Aucca 7, which is about the same size and colour as a letter box.

Leo often frequents the wellknown milk bars, where he absorbs the dispensed food as fast as a fish can drink water.

The green paper that Leo requires to finance the above commodities and Sue (he's really gone, too) is supplied by the Education Department.

K U H N E L L , BRUCE THOMAS. First saw Margaret on 17/7/41. Bruce has the distinction of attending classes (sometimes) with his father, or maybe it's the other way around. He runs a Standard 10, which is often stranded with an empty fuel tank about three or four days before the next pay packet arrives from the Education Department.

Bruce is starting to get annoyed at Mr. D. because he will not answer any questions or repeat any sentences when Bruce asks him to.

McCORRISTON, GEOFFREY IAN. Became wrapped around a lamp-post on 5/4/40. Geoff has restored a '38 Vauxhall back into excellent order, and it's really a credit to him. He is another Education Department bod and the funds he gets go towards running the Vauxhall and his gal, Mary.

Mac is quite a controversial figure, especially where Mr. D. is concerned, because it came to pass one day that he told Mr. D. where he ought to be.

PRIJAMBADA, TONY. Tony hails from Indonesia and is one of a family of about twelve. Most of these, so he tells us, are educated to the leaving standard and higher. Tony always has his own method or design to solve any problem confronting him. This outlook has sometimes put him into sticky situations with certain teachers. Tony has also recently joined the band of boys known as the "pole suckers."

S I A G O N, SOALON. "Neddy Seagoon" also comes from Indonesia. He obtained a driver's licence this year and the story goes that, when the officer asked him what he would do if he had an accident, Neddy replied, "Nothin, how could I, I'd be dead, wouldn't I, and even if I wasn't I still couldn't do anything because I'm sure the shock would make me incapable of moving."

SITUMORANG, WILLIE. Manufactured in Indonesia, this old chap produces a fantastic giggle when he is manhandled in a number of sensitive places. Always ready to tell someone to "Sut up," Willy can put to shame some of the Aussie lads in the use of the Australian idiom. It was seen on the Snowy trip that Willie is not a very good bus traveller, because as the bus followed the windy mountain road Willy just about turned the same colour as the Brien's coach.

SMITH, DENNIS. First poked his head over the bassinet rail on 3/12/40. Has matured greatly since then, however, and recently is winning the women at the rate of two a week, and if this form continues Dennis will easily take off the prize of the ultimate Romeo for 1960. Dennis has a private goldmine which finances all his borderline vices, which are in the range of anything naughty that can be conjured up by a reactive imagination (probably a woman's).

STEEVENZ, JENA L. Is a visitor from Indonesia and the grapevine informs us that he is living with his wife and children (two boys and a girl) down East St. Kilda way. His two boys are champion Aussie rule footballers, who play for their school. A qualified motor mechanic by trade, Jean can often be seen working on a Ford Anglia which, more often than not, seems to be in his repair shop. However, in times of great need (i.e., a typical Melbourne drizzle) it will often arrive after having been paddled half the way by Jean, Roffi, Tony, etc.

MALCOLM, JOHN ROYAL, is the form's most active member, an S.R.C. representative, Prefect, Car Club secretary, Social Committee member, Badminton captain, and on one occasion he was a debutant. His other college activities are to argue with Mr. Finch, antagonise Mr. Lawlor with his midperiod walking manoeuvre, and assist Fred in girl control. He changes girls so often that it's more complicated than the Congo crisis and requires the Big 3 B.A.R. to sort it out.

A.J.B. GEOFFREY WALKER came to the College from the Junior Section in 1957. He is 6ft. lin. of skinny, bony misery, with a face that would scare death itself. Apart from this he is a conscientious student, taking off several prizes in the past four years. Geoff attends the Congregational Church, where he is active in the Youth Club. Next year Geoff is going to Melbourne University to study Agricultural Science when not occupied with biology.

FREDERICK (Fairy Feet) SARGENT is a picture of Australian manhood. A more alert, precise, gentle, polite, careful and well-dressed cardsharp would be hard to find in any crockery shop. His main hobbies are girls, dancing, and dancing girls.

His dislikes are money, cards and pies. He has recently carried out important experimental work on explosives, fire prevention, and water-spraying equipment.

ANDREW ("drink milk") BUTLER believes in the infallibility of Post, the fallibility of Chemistry and the fallen state of Physics. He keeps healthy by keeping Bic ball-points in prosperity, the Chemistry Department in a flurry, and Fred in a hurry. Andy barracks for Carlton and spends most of his time, to quote, "at a girl's place." He is always in the dark at College and next year will be working at Kodak, where he will find plenty of room to be dark in.

HIRD, JOHN WILLIAM. The Victorian Railways discovered John under Heavy Harry on 8 / 1 / 4 0 and it now appears that he will be spared the job of breadwinning by them for the rest of his life.

Rita is the girl who looks like permanently telling John how, when, where, why and what to do. Recently John degraded himself by relinquishing his Chevy to buy a Morris Minor, which he says will do the same job, anyway—the same job as the Chevy, not Rita. He is quite an athletic sort of bloke and can easily be induced into a fight if someone tells him the truth about the railways.

W I L L I S , GEOFFREY FRANCIS. Geoff aims to follow in his father's footsteps and be a teacher. On the tennis court Geoff brands his opponents like they brand the cattle at round-up time. His mmm^. explanation for this is that "If my opponents walk across the path of the ball that I have just struck and it hits them then it's not my fault."

YOUNG, SIR PAY. Hailing from up north somewhere, Fred joined us after the start of this year. However, during this short time we have come to learn that "Fearless Fred Fosdik" is a well-known singing star among the night, club society. However, he doesn't make most of his money in that occupation, because in his spare time he manipulates the used car market to his own benefit by up to the order of £150 in one sale. Not bad for a newcomer to Australia.

STIRLING, BRUCE ANDREW. This great handsome brute is a cardsharp who specialises in misere. He has notable ability in keeping on the sweet side of certain instructors (borrowed a VW off one for two weeks) whilst still keeping them in their places. He also enjoys flinging himself about corridors and classrooms, often to the detriment of himself and poor souls like Walker. He is a keen student—does Chem. Ill amongst his other night-time activities.

J. APPERLY—"Ned" to his pals. Notorious for his belated entry into the class in the mornings. Often finds his bag filled with objects of unusual shape, size, weight and odour, e.g., fractional- |§§| horse-power motors are frequently found, or more precisely, felt, just before the last whistle is blown; the sudden discovery of an X.O.S. ladies antiquated unmentionables (which are sometimes beyond recognition) has often led to unprecedented and loud self-expression.

SOENARTO KREBERT— "Cupid" of the class; though by no means stupid. One of the few conscientious individuals who manage to keep the instructors busy. Unusually punctual, he has, however, been caught sneaking into the class under the affectedly reproachful stare of the instructor in charge. Sometimes capable of demonstrating active resentment of the ludicrous pranks practised by some of his colleagues.

A. H. NASUTION—More amicably known as the "Colonel." Epitome of mirth and jocularity, his characteristic laugh is sometimes contagious. Plays soccer for the College, and rides a motor scooter to and from the College, even though his place of residence is hardly a stone's throw from the school.

DON SARGEANT — Is one lad who believes he may ^ftttfck make a good teacher in the Jr not-so-distant future. When visiting his home one becomes embarrassed by the number of signs displayed around the study denouncing women. But, as usual with all the most anti-female members, he has been been caught. And you should rave (after classes, of course) about that certain party.

IAN ROBERTSON—Was sentenced to seven years with the Railways; and so he acts as a V.R. cadet on pay days, when he collects large sums of money. He seems to be achieving his aims—a good job with no work.

Has a chronic inability to rise before 9.30 a.m. and likes to get home early to restock with food.

J. PUCE—A close associate of the Indonesian group.

Invariably reads the morning paper brought by Tom. Favourite pastime is displaying pestiferous tendencies towards Tom and sometimes Krebert. Also claims to play soccer for the College, but probably his likely position is linesman.

ALLAN HORSLEY — Shelters beneath a mop of hair that must take at least a * bottle of peroxide every week.

He still maintains that layback seats are one of the greatest inventions since cars, and since Peugeots have these marvellous inventions, then they must be the best car off the road. Allan is often seen disappearing into town, and it is suspected that he visits a certain person of the fairer sex.

JOHN HUTCHINSON— Following a mishap which immobilised his Prefect, John 1 has been seen to arrive at school on a one-man-powered machine, regardless of the ^ weather, and it has been J i k ill rumoured that he will enter the next Olympics cycling team.

Our "new boy" has been seen to adopt a conscientious attitude of late and it is believed to be due to the effort of a young lady friend of his. He is frequently seen parked at the drive-inns.

POERNOMO — Better known as "Po," but recently has acquired the name of Mr. Lumbumba. The coincidental resemblance to his more well-known counterpart is restricted to facial characteristics. Possesses a car that is no more spacious than himself. Responds very readily to Tom's antics with fits and spasms of rib-bursting guffaws.

SOETOMO — Boasts of being the only member of the class with a uniquely singular name. Tom to his colleagues, he appears to be well fed, as evidenced by the sight of prosperity around the waistline. Also known as "A1 Capone" to his more secretive comrades, he frequently makes his presence felt by resorting to his funny antics. Claims to be a denizen of Sumatra.

ROBIN DAVIES — On Mondays he generally has a rough idea of what happened over the week-end; but the truth is rarely known. Intends to become an electrical engineer, but seems to be an expert on fluids. Thrashes a green Singer at reckless speeds, yet manages to arrive at school at odd times.

His interest include girls, jazz, cars and all that comes with them.

L A U R E N C E (LEW) DYSON—This is the student with the unique distinction of travelling the furthest to attend the College. He will give a classical demonstration on how to drive a Riley Pathfinder to anyone who is game enough to get in the car with him. He is an avid member of the Wayout Club and from all reports his girl friend loves to go Wayout.

CLIFFORD JONES — Seldom seen, often heard.

Chief occupations, heckling Mr. Pellizzer during Elec.

Eng. Generally seen disappearing on a motor cycle at high speed. Likes playing with C.R.O.'s and other dangerous equipment. Often found playing tennis in the basement when maths classes are in progress. Ambition: to attend classes.

ROYCE BYRNE—Royce is one of our staff members who always makes it his business to keep the class under CONTROL when lacking a teacher. His main interest seems to be cars in various stages from cold, through warm to hot; a good example is his own Holden which, when necessary, has proved quite fast. Seemingly has no interest in females after dark. Note the seldom seen tie.

DAVE WARING—Dave is a very promising studentship holder, as he has already attained a high degree of accuracy with the blackboard duster. Has a great potential as an actor; as was seen by his fine performance in the school play, and the way he fooled the judge one Monday morning. Does not believe in having a girl friend in case the others become jealous.

DON DOWER—The truth will never be revealed; the censors have been at work.

Claims to be not interested in the three vices, but likes dancing, tennis and studying electronics and nurses. Has never been known to attend assemblies, and always has his bike well positioned for a fast get-away.

Often drives the family chariot and claims to have reached terminal velocity down Nicholson Street.

NEIL MEADEN—Neil is one of the class geniuses, coming top in several subjects, making him quite a good bargain for the S.E.C. and being in a good financial state, drives a sleek black Riley, which he is proud to say can now STOP. Since his 21st birthday he has been the proud owner of a catamaran, and will no doubt be seen thrushing around Sorrento at Christmas.

JACK SIMPSON—Keeps fit by cranking the Hillman every morning and taking Glenn out at week-ends.

Attends all rallies in Room 7 with the hope that he might learn something; but if not, he will suit the Railways.

The Snowy trip proved very exciting for Jack until one night he ran up against a "four-eyed elephant." Ambition—to synchronise with the water mains.

BENG WATT TAN—Onr of the more studious Indonesian students, who amazed the class with his efforts in the mid-year Elec. Eng. exam. He frequents some badly-lit quarters of Parkville and may be seen on any dark night sneaking across to the nurses' new quarters in preference to doing his Electronics homework.

JOHN HARSLEY—Prima'ily an S.E.C. (Slow, Easy and Comfortable) man, but seems to be wound up in other interests. John careers around the countryside in a clapped Singer, which may look a wreck, yet good enough to reach the best of parking spots on Saturday nights.

He prefers to study in bed rather than at school, which is probably due to the way he handles figures.

RALPH CHAPELL — RALPH CHAPPLE — Ralph is one of our brains and hence is a paid schoolboy at the expense of the Victorian Railways, and it has been noticed that he also suffers from the strike attitude, especially on Sundays.

He has also been seen to associate with quite a pretty TV star, which puts him in a class of his own.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER There is a tendency in our education system to over-emphasise the achievement of the brilliant student who, in winning prizes and scholarships, reflects credit on his school. The boy who achieves outstanding results at school undoubtedly has his foot on the first rung of the ladder of success; but if he is to be a successful man in the best sense of the term he must develop many other qualities of character and personality.

Perhaps even more important than scholastic ability are such qualities as integrity, perseverance, and the ability to command the willing co-operation of a team. At Footscral Technical College you have been given the opportunity to develop these qualities in your work as Prefects, House Captains, Form Captains, Captains of sports teams, and as monitors and leaders in such

organisations as the Air Training Corps, Social Service League, and the Library. In doing these things well you have been preparing yourself to take your place as a leader in the wider field of life outside the College.

Many of the leaders in industry and government today were, on their own admission, only average students at school. It cannot be too strongly emphasised that the boy who has average ability can qualitfy for the highest positions. He may have to work harder and apply himself more diligently than the brilliant student; but in doing so he is developing character traits which will fit him for the most responsible positions. In our highly complex modern society, such academic qualifications as a Diploma or a Degree are a necessity for advancement —they are within the reach of the diligent student who is prepared to make the effort derful life!

man amongst gentlemen. Among his many innovations at Footscray have been Social Hour, a notable feature of the routine at Ballarat Road. It is certain that Mr. Green will be sadly missed in 1961, but we must face the inevitable. We wish Mr. Green every success in his new post. Mr. Green's position as Headmaster will be filled by the promotion of Mr. W. H. Horbury, at present Headmaster of South Melbourne T.S. As if the loss of one member of the Green family was insufficient, we are unfortunately also losing Mr. T. Green, our capable Senior Assistant. Although only here for 1959-60 Mr. Green has left his mark on Footscray through his zealous, forthright approach to his duties. Mr. Green goes to the position of Headmaster of South Melbourne T.S. Senior assistant for 1961 will be Mr. T. Elliot, who has been promoted from Oakleigh T.S. Long service leave has caused the temporary absence of Mr. R. Oakley, of the Instrumental Drawing Department, who was absent during the major portion of term 3.

When last heard of Mr. Oakley was headed for the Northern Territory. Mr. L. Simpson, head of the Art Department, will be absent on long service leave early in 1961.

He plans to travel extensively in the U.S.A. and Europe.

Senior newcomer to Footscray in 1960 was Mr. F. Chaplin, who took over the post of head of the Instrumental Drawing Department. After eight years at Maryborough T.S. Mr. Chaplin returned to Footscray, which was the first school at which he taught. Mr. Chaplin is a great tennis enthusiast, with many years' experience on Ihe administrative side of the game in a number of tennis clubs.

The year 1960 saw many new faces on the staff, almost all departments gaining new members. In the maths and science departments are Mr. N. Cary, from Ferntree Gully T.S.; Mr. A. Foot, from Geelong T.S.; and Mr. F. Coldabella, from the C.S.R., as well as Mr. A. Shirriff, from Tottenham T.S. The English and Social Studies Departments gained Mr. A. Handberg from Essendon T.S.; Mr. G. Littlejohn, from East Geelong T.S.; Mr. J. Moore, from New Zealand, and Mr. A. Cock, from the primary schools. Mr. Cock was later transferred to Nicholson Street during term 2. Mr. N. Van Dalen joined the Art Department to

WHO WANTS TO BE ROBINSON CRUSOE? Robinson Crusoe lived on his own, and so he could do as he liked. There was no one to give him orders or to make rules for him to keep. Nobody else had to be considered. He could go out when he liked, and come home when he liked, and go where he pleased while he was out. What a wondeful life!

The trouble was that he had no opportunity to do plenty of things he would very much have liked to have done. He couldn't mak f iends. He couldn't talk over interesting things because there was no one to listen. He couldn't get new ideas from other people. He was horribly lonely.

Other people can be a nuisance to us.

Boys growing up often wish that they could get free of parents and teachers and all the other people who stop them from doing what they like or going where they want to go. They complain because they must be home by a certain time, or are limited in their choice of friends. They would jump at the chance of being Robinson Crusoe.

But they also complain, and with good cause, if they a^e left alone with no one to be interested in them. This means that they cannot get along without o f her people.

Parents and teachers are necessary, as well as all the others. God made us so that we need others and they need us. Th~ sensible thing to do is learn how to get on with them, since we cannot get on without them.

One of the most important things Christ had to teach us is that, if we love other people, get concerned about helping them, no matter who they are, our relationships with them will be so good, and life so well worth living that one one will want to be Robinson Crusoe.

STAFF NOTES After six yea r s as Headmaster at Ballarat Road, Mr. C. Green will be leaving us at the end of 1960 to take up the position of Principal at Sandringham Technical School.

During his stay at Footscray Mr. Green has had the complete confidence and respect of both staff and students. His firm but everunderstanding, combined with outstanding administrative ability, mark him as a gentle44

replace Miss Foard, who transferred to another school. Mr. Holmes took over Footscray's musical activities, while Mr. L. Walker was welcomed to the Plumbing Department, from South Melbourne T.S. Other new members of staff in the workshops include Mr. E. Rochford and Mr. J. Cross (Sheetmetal), Mr. J. Cocks, Mr. R. Wilkie and Mr. J. Spicer (Woodwork).

Term 3 saw the return of Mr. B. Cronin to resume duty at Ballarat Road on his return from abroad. Mr. Cronin worked in the United States on a Fulbright scholarship, returning home via England and the Continent.

During 1960 Mr. D. Davies left Footscray to travel abroad. Letters from as far afield as Moscow have kept us well informed of his travels, which so far have included China and Russia. He plans to move on to Europe in the near future.

PREFECT REPORT 1960 This year, as in previous years, the prefect body numbered eighteen. Seven prefects returned from 1959 and eleven were elected at the commencement of the year.

The prefects are elected in the following way: boys are nominated for the position by members of the staff and the present prefects.

The second and third form boys then vote on a special ballot paper, on which is printed the names of the candidates. Those successfully elected must be approved by the staff. The senior prefect is elected by the prefect body.

Each week prefects are allotted duties, which include supervision of the park, Footscray, the tuckshop, the corridors, and roving commissions. In addition there are two prefects whose job it is to assist the Sportsmaster. This year prefects did well in both academic and sporting spheres. Every

prefect represented the College in some branch of inter-technical school sports.

These depict the costumes of four different centuries, in four panels, each group consisting of three figures. Our sincere thanks and gratitude go to Mr. Van Dalen for this effort on our behalf.

New lighting has been added to the library, making better conditions for reading.

Magazine shelves have been added to the growing maze of shelves. Also added to widen the range of magazine material available have been such well-known magazines as "Time," "Wheels," "Meanjin," "UNESCO Courier," "Popular Science" and several others. Also several series of magazines have been bound into book form, enabling them to last a considerably longer time.

New "Nameplates" with subject headings have also been installed, thus decreasing the degree of difficulty in finding the required books.

Greater interest in books was noted among third and fourth form boys, and it was a rare occurrence for the library not to be full at lunch time.

The monitors worked untiringly throughout the year, and thoroughly deserve their vacation. We wish them the best of luck for the following year, and maybe they will be back to join the library staff next year.

To every member goes our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

SOCIAL SERVICE LEAGUE Footscray Technical College has a very active branch of the Social Service League.

This is under the guidance of Mr. Lambart, who is ably assisted by F. Deans and L. firm, of 3A, and R. Roberts and J. Hodges, of 3G. Each Friday morning contributions are collected during form assemblies by form representatives. So far this year (mid October) we have collected the sum of £172, while we now have a balance of £670 in the fund. The two forms which were consistently best contributors were 2G, who gave over £16 and 3D, who gave over £15.

It is planned to make donations to the Footscray and District Hospital of the furniture necessary to furnish the Day room of the After-Care Centre, at a cost of over £240, and also another item of special equipment for the hospital at a cost of about £200. It has not yet been decided what form this special equipment will take.

LIBRARY NOTES, 1960 The year of 1960 was a most successful one for the "junior" library. With the able assistance of C. Lumsden, L. Cole, P. Lloyd.

S. Hames, J. Charles, D. Ryder, P. Merry, I. Murton, A. Philpott and several others, the library took in between 400 and 500 new books, all of which were entered, painted, lettered, covered and catalogued by these willing boys. The total number of books in the library is now approximately 3500, of which 2500 are reference books, the remaining 1000 bring fiction.

Lunch-hour response was excellent, and the total borrowings well above normal. This was no doubt due in some small way to a fiction drive carried out by many of our English teachers, aided by the librarian, Mr. Billinge. Education Week brought in donations of books from parents, teachers, individual boys and forms. Altogether about 70 books were added from these sources.

THE AIR TRAINING CORPS The close of 1960 marks the completion of another successful year in the history of No. 13 Flight of the Air Training Corps.

During 1960 No. 13 Flight paraded a total muster of about 40 cadets, including two sergeants and three corporals, under the leadership of recently promoted Flying Officer Billinge.

This year's course of study consisted of four compulsory subjects: Drill, Service Knowledge, Armament and Aircraft Recognition. Air Traffic Control was also studied, and the year's course concluded with some suitable general knowledge films.

Interesting highlights of the A.T.C. schedule are the camps which are held at 46

various R.A.A.F. bases during the school vacations. The camp programme includes interesting tours and activities. Sometimes fortunate cadets are given flights in service aircraft. The main aim of these camps is to introduce cadets to typical service life.

Rifle shooting plays an important part in the A.T.C. syllabus, and cadets are taught how to shoot correctly with both small and large bore service rifles. A rifle club exists for those cadets who are very keen on shooting.

Those cadets who specialise in model aeroplanes are catered for by a model aeroplane club.

Occasionally special privileges are granted to A.T.C. cadets, and this year five cadets from our flight were given free admission to the premiere of "The Merry Widow" at the Tivoli Theatre, after having formed a guard of honour for the Governor, Sir Dallas Brooks.

Several competitive activities are conducted each year by the A.T.C. These include swimming sports, athletic sports, drill competition and rifle shooting competition. Unfortunately No. 13 Flight did not possess the necessary experience or good athletes to do as well as last year.

Flight-Sergeant Grieg, who was an active member of this flight last year, has been recently promoted, while L.A.C. Johnstone, also a former member, has achieved great success in the interstate rifle shooting competitions.

Although the A.T.C. was formed to train prospective members of the R.A.A.F. it also develops initiative and powers of leadership, which will be useful to the cadet in later life, no matter what vocation he undertakes.

All A.T.C. uniforms, camps, travel and activities are free of charge. Boys who will be in third or fourth form next year, and wish to enquire about, or to join the Air Training Corps at the commencement of 1961, should contact F.O. Billings as soon as possible.

Many other schools were represented, each choir singing two songs. Later in the year we contributed items at the Social Hour for the third and fourth form boys. We were assisted by members of the band and orchestra. Later the Mothers' Club celebrated its birthday at a function, during which the choir entertained with a number of songs. We are now busily practising for end-of-the-year functions, which will include Speech Night.

Throughout the year we have been grateful for the assistance of our pianist C. Hughes, our trumpeter J. Fudyma, and our cornetist D. Mak, and especially our choirmaster Mr. Holmes, who had to put up with us all the year.

R. HARSLEY, 2A. C. HUGHES, 2A. SENIOR CAMP The annual camp, lasting from February 22 to 26, was once again held in the popular National Fitness Camp at Mt. Evelyn.

A party of 38 boys from the third and fourth forms, accompanied by four members of the staff, travelled by bus to the camp.

On arrival at the camp the different sections were shown to their quarters, Bilkos to the cottage, Untouchables to the cabin, Pelitas to the upper Chalet and Capones to the bottom Chalet.

The boys soon settled in and made themselves at home—soon adaptii;g themselves to sleeping with logs, lizards and the like.

An inter-hut competition was held, points being awarded for various sports played, for hut cleanliness, kitchen duties and for showing co-operative spirit around the camp.

This competition was very popular and always made the competitors put forward their best work.

Each morning, after a cold shower in bed for the reluctant risers, the campers were placed in groups under one member of staff, who acted as leader. The most popular of these groups was the Photography Club, led

by Mr. Chrisfield, and the daily newspaper written and duplicated by a group under the leadership of Mr. Billinge.

Afternoons were devoted to organised sports such as cricket, tennis, football, baseball and swimming. A hike to the Sylvan Dam and a visit to the Healesville Sanctuary proved to be very enjoyable outings to all who participated.

THE CHOIR The choir is a group of boys from Forms 1 and 2, who have taken part in a variety of activities during 1960.

During the year the choir went to Storey Hall in the Royal Melbourne Technical College, to take part in a Music Festival.

Night sports were organised for the evenings, at either the nearby cricket oval, or the "Wreck Hall."

After an eventful and variety-filled camp, the bus was boarded to take the unwilling "bushmen" back to the monotony of city life.

EDUCATION WEEK AT BALLARAT ROAD The Junior section of the College was open for inspection during the afternoon and evening of the Tuesday and Wednesday of Education Week. A large number of parents, ex-students and friends took the opportunity to visit us. Main features of the display were a general exhibition of students' work in Rooms 24 and 25, as well as special features in the Science, Art, Woodwork, Sheetmetal, Craft, Turning and Fitting, Instrumental Drawing, Library, Mathematics and Steel Construction departments. As usual a very popular feature was the Hobbies Exhibition, which attracted a great deal of interest. Films were shown to appreciative audiences by members of the English and Social Studies staff.

All the boys look forward to the coming of Education Week as, apart from our own display, members of the third and fourth forms are taken on excursions to nearby industries, in order to see what certain jobs are really like, so that they will be able to understand the conditions they will work under when they seek employment.

This year Mr. Chaplin gave a talk to parents on the fundamentals of solid geometry. I am sure that this talk will be of help to those parents who are weak in this subject. It may even help some of them to get their homework right now and then!

Education Week displays some very outstanding work, but unfortunately not enough boys take the trouble to show their work.

It would be far better if everyone contributed at least one exhibit, instead of leaving it to a few who contribute work in many sections.

During the September holidays three members of 4A, John ("Moose") Dowdle, Graham ("Chappo") Chapman and the aforementioned "Nugget" spent a few days with the Lester family at Frankston, and perhaps you can guess what they did during their stay.

Robert ("Tex") Dixon is a promising student who, if he studied, could almost pass his examinations. Tex's main interest is the raising of roosters. I hear he managed to win 10th place at the Royal Melbourne Show (did someone say there were only 11 entries?).

4AB has many other lads of varying shapes and sizes; for example, Russell Halverson, who has long ago left the six footers behind, and "Charley" Johnson, who has just joined the ranks of the five footers.

Charley is a remarkably useful member of the form, for, besides being the stooge who nearly always gets the form's lunches, he is also a champion getter of handball courts (sometimes he is even allowed to play on them).

"The boy who never returns" is Richard Frost, a prefect, a fine sport and a very popular member of 4AB. 4CD likewise has its share of notables, among whom must be numbered David Attreed, who has a weakness for all the new "crazes." David's latest project was a "beatnik beard," but he was offended when very few noticed it. Then we have the "Undercover Man," Alan Jenkins, who loves nothing better than playing around with engines, cars, and in fact anything mechanical. Alan is a keen swimmer and is a member of a Life Saving Club. Ray Nolan, another of our prefects, is a judo fan and likes nothing better than to try out the latest holds on his classmates, usually with painful results for somebody. Graham Wells has never been seen wearing a proper College tie this year. He has the unusual hobby of being interested in Samurai swords and wrist radios. David Mann is our book worm. He is always reading, but unfortunately these books rarely have anything to do with his studies. Robert Stone loves to draw "hot rod" cars; the crazier the better. While Graham Barrow, known better to everyone as "Mickey," is another of our prefects, he is also equally well known for his ability

WHISPERS FROM FORM FOUR Top of fourth year in the half-year exams, was Colin Rix, who, apart from finding complicated Maths and Science formulae child's play, has an unusual hobby (it is not connected in any way with girls). Colin is an aeroplane crank, who made some profit from his hobby by cleaning up first prize in the Hobbies Exhibition with a model of a twin-engined Lockheed Lightning. Second to Colin in scholastic ability was senior orefect Terry (Nugget) Roberts, who showed he has other talents by taking over the difficult position of first base in the baseball team. I hear he even managed to get a hit or two. Two newcomers to the College in recent times were the Lester brothers, Ray and Graham, better known as "Stroff" and "China," who each have old cars which they obtained for a small outlay.

Other third formers who forced their way into the sporting limelight were Ken Collins and Ron Wheeler. Ken bowls cunning spinners for the cricket team and plays second base for the baseballers. Ron amazed everyone by being chosen as opening bat for the cricket team, a task he filled with distinction. He wintered in the baseball team doing a capable job at centrefield.

Then of course there is Colin Peatling our swimming and diving champion who amazes us with the dives he knows!!

We also have a champion (?) golfer of the future in that very serious gentleman Fergus Deans who also plays the violin perhaps the Scots ancestry explains the bagpipe-like sounds he produces!!)

Terry Olver has great athletic ability— an outstanding tennis player, sprinter and broad jumper, he is best known for his ability to travel half-fare on the trains.

Neville Buzza has a bicycle which looks like a travelling show. It is the envy of everyone. It is rumored that this character is definitely an "ivy league" fan even to his underwear. The title of the greatest story teller in form three, seems to be a "photo finish" between Greame King, who regularly holds court with a fund of impossible stories, and Jeffrey Hein, who has a similar number of highly improbable stories about his Saturday adventures.

4EF have several claims to fame, apart from the fact that they are outstanding at English and Maths (ask Messrs. Sweeney and Green—if you dare). First there is that remarkable character Graham Bown, otherwise known as "Seaweed," who continually cracks "corny" jokes in every period.

The fact that he is the only one ever known to laugh at these jokes may give you some idea of their quality. Then there is "Trunka," sometimes called Ian Struthers, definitely the only one of his kind in captivity. Ian wears pants so tight that he has been known to have to soak his feet in cold water before he can get them off again. John Watts (known to his friends as "Eagle") is our most punctual attender. He is always thirty minutes late'—especially to Solid Geom. Ray Houston is the form musician—always playing an imaginary instrument. From the strange chant which accompanies this performance, I rather fancy this instrument is an aboriginal didgeridoo. Finally I must mention our two Bacchus Marsh importations, Peter Clarke and Kevin Thorneycroft, who are persistently late, usually with the excuse that the stage coach broke down again.

1 GOSSIP FROM THE THIRD FORM The mid year exams have come and gone; most of the third form pupils have once again buried their forlorn hopes and firmly resolved to do better in the finals. David Mayne topped the form as usual—he is also captain of the lacrosse team, which did not meet with quite the same success. 3A has other noteworthy characters (?) in its midst -—probably the most noteable being Howard Noble, usually referred as "Sleeping Beauty" •—it amazes everyone how he manages to get such good marks. He has just returned from Queensland, where apart from basking in the sun and catching up on his sleep, he managed to admire the local scenery!!

Howard is also noted for his original ideas on school uniforms. 3A also boasts those two band stalwarts George Greaves and Geoff. Lowe whose main distinction is that they never talk in school.

In 3B we find Garry Broadway who apart from being a prefect, also managed to win places in the cricket and football premiership sides, also Lou Dowling who developed mto a handy pitcher for the baseballers.

EDUCATION IN NEW ZEALAND Maori wars had a strong influence on the early settlement of New Zealand. Hostile tribes in the North Island caused more rapid settlement in the South where land was easily cleared for crops. Different settlements were strictly separate both in origin and religion. Otago with Dunedin as its centre was Scottish, Canterbury with Christchurch its main town was English, while Nelson was both English and Catholic.

These early influences are still apparent in the names and traditions of secondary schools in those districts. When a central government was introduced it evened out the standard of education throughout the provinces, but left traditions intact (an attitude of quiet learning in the South, and hustle and bustle in the North.

Although school is not compulsory until the age of six, most children start at five years of age and have two years in the infant department going through Primers 1 to 4.

This is a general preparation for the "three 50

R's" which are introduced at Standard!

About 80 per cent, of children after four years at a Primary school, change over to an Intermediate school for two years, before moving on to a Secondary school, at 12 or 13 years of age. The Intermediate school was introduced in an effort to bridge the ever widening gap between the Primary and Secondary schools.

Most Secondary schools in New Zealand are either High Schools or Colleges, and rely for their technical side on either a department within the school, a central Technical department, or both Technical schools like Footscray are not common, but trade apprentices are expected to attend at night classes.

The "Night Schools" also run classes on Social Studies, English, Typing, Dressmaking, etc., which are open to the public.

The New Zealand school leaving age is 15 but at the end of the third year (or fifth form year) at Secondary school those who wish may sit for a Public Examination, known as the School Certificate Examination. It is conducted entirely outside the schools and a pass has become the required pre-requisite for most jobs. After a further year provided that the student has passed his School Certificate, he is eligible to sit for his University Entrance Examination.

This examination is conducted by the University of New Zealand, and is once again a public examination. There is, however, a system of accrediting by which a percentage of those sitting from most large schools are credited with a pass at this exam without actually sitting. This enables the student to go on to the University, where half his fees are paid.

Education in New Zealand has been based almost entirely on the English system, but has been modified to suit local requirements. New Zealanders like to think that their system equals education anywhere else in the world.

BAND This year's band consists of nineteen members, nine of whom began learning at the beginning of the year. Tuition is free, but a fee of one guinea per year is charged for the upkeep of the instruments. Practice is held during the members' spare time.

Band conductor is Mr. Shea, who has been connected with bands for over thirty years.

He attends the college three times a week, to conduct practices.

The band has had a number of engagements during the year. Our first performance was at the Western Suburbs Music Festival, held at the Barkly Theatre, on August 16th. This festival was attended by numerous choirs and bands from district schools. Our next public performance was at the college during Education Week.

Altogether the band has enjoyed a very successful year, and now, with performances at the Girls' Secondary Schools Sports, and Speech Night approaching, the players will be settling down to solid practice.

Speaking generally it can be claimed that Footscray enjoyed a very successful year on the sporting field. Undoubtedly the highlight of the year was the outstanding performance of the football team which carried all before it, to go through the season undefeated and win the coveted premiership over all metropolitan Technical schools. A very strong cricket side won the premiership in its section, but owing to pressure of school work in term III it was decided that there be no intersection finals. This was unfortunate for us as our side would undoubtedly have done very well. The swimming team acquitted itself very well in the very powerful A section, finishing a close third. Our athletic squad found the competition too strong in A section, finishing last, so that Footscray will be relegated to B selection in 1961. The Soccer team had another good season to finish second to Sunshine the eventual premiers, while the baseballers with an almost new side, did very well in finishing third, in what was probably the strongest section in the competition. The tennis squad continued Footscray's domination in this sport winning three of the six titles and being runners up in another. The basketball side did very well to end the season as runners up in the Technical school competition.

CRICKET Footscray 1st XI cricket team had a very successful season in which they won the coveted title of district premiers. They lost only one game, due mainly to their own slower batting. In these games each innings is limited to 26 overs so that bright batting is a must. The team was quick to learn from th.ir mistakes and never repeated these tactics.

The main strength of the team was a very strong batting line-up, allied to an accurate attack, keen fielding and team work.

The season produced some excellent individual and partnership batting.

Ray H wat topped the batting performances with scores of 71 not out and 61 and combined with Ron Wheeler to record the highest partnership of the season, 105 against Sunshine after a bad start. The fielding was of a very high standard, but special mention is due to slips catches by Ray Hewat and Gary Broadway which were both outstanding. Neil Rankin was a sound wicket keeper taking part in 8 dismissals, and also making some useful scores with the bat.

The bowlers deserve special p aise as tlry always managed to dismiss their opponents inside the 26 over limit, which was an outstanding feat. In general it was a four man atfack with fast mediums Colin Bendelle, Glen Thompson and Greame Borlase carrying the heavy work. They were reliably supnorted by a promising spinner in Ken Collins.

The last game against Williamstown proved to be a real thriller. The team which won the game would win the premiership.

Footscray batting first rattled up 185 for the loss of six wickets when their time ran out, due to extremely bright batting from Ray Hewat, Gary Broadway, Colin Bendelle, Neil Rankin and Graeme Borlase. Williams-

The younger boys were well catered for with regular social games against other schools in the district, with a fair measure of success. The experience gained by these form 1 and 2 boys will prove valuable in competition teams of the future.

Last year's Warragul trip was returned in 1960, with Footscray acting as hosts to the Warragul boys who were billeted over a long week-end. An enjoyable series of matches and social functions proved very popular, and it is hoped that this will become an annual affair.

The inter-house competition is at a very interesting stage with some sports as yet still undecided. In those sports which have been decided Emus were successful in winning the Athletics and Form 2 football, while Wombats won the Swimming sports and the Form 1 football. At the time of going to 53

strength was the vital factor in a close game.

Footscray 12-16 defeated Box Hill 10-7.

town showed that they intended to go down fighting, and despite accurate bowling and brilliant fielding were at one stage well ahead of the clock. Then Ken Collins completely bamboozled the opposition to capture three quick wickets and with the help of skipper Bendelle ran through Williamstown.

Grand Final The game against Brighton was of high standard, with patches of brilliant play from both sides. Footscray's better team work and accuracy in the closing stages proved too much for Brighton.

No side wins a premiership unless all players are capable of pulling their weight, and this was the case in this side. Every one in the team played well at various times, and it would be unfair to single out individual players. However, it would also be unfair not to make special mention of full forward John Williams who had an outstanding season, kicking 65 goals. His best effort was probably against Sunshine when he kicked 14 goals.

The team wishes to express its thanks to Mr. Chrisfield whose coaching paved the way to success. Mr. Harrison should also be thanked for the assistance he gave to Mr. Chrisfield.

Footscray 6/185 and 2/44 (Hewat 71 n.o., Broadway 29, Bendelle 24 and 28 n.o., Rankin 19) defeated Williamstown 117 (Bendelle 5/31, Collins 3/31).

C. BENDELLE, 4A. FOOTBALL Footscray enjoyed its most successful season for many years running out comfortable winners in their section without ever being in danger of defeat.

They then had reasonably easy victories in the finals to run out winners of the Metropolitan Technical Schools' premiership, with an undefeated record for season 1960.

Home and Home games Footscray defeated Glenroy 8-7 to 4-6 and 17-17 to 8-9.

Footscray defeated Essendon 11-16 to 6-7 and 25-19 to 7-5.

Footscray defeated Williamstown 16-18 to 5-5 and 14-20 to 2-6.

Footscray defeated Sunshine 26-18 to 9-10 and 30-24 to 1-1.

Footscray defeated Tottenham 14-8 to 6-5 and 21-13 to 3-3.

BASEBALL With only one member of the 1959 side still at school we were forced to field an almost new line up, but enjoyed a reasonably successful season finishing third in our section behind Essendon (who reached the Grand Final) and Williamstown.

The infield consisted entirely of new players, but once a few games had been played they settled down remarkably well.

Anderson Laid Joe Galea who alternated at third and shortstop, John Smith rounded out a strong infield. Barry Lupton and Ron Wheeler were regulars in the outfield who both aid well at times.

The batting was very solid especially from first year players, led by Ken Collins, Terry Roberts and Ron Wheeler. Home runs were hit by Joe Galea (three), Terry Roberts (two), and Paul Sterritt.

The thanks of the team go to Mr. Sweeney for his capable coaching and his interest in the team generally.

P, STERRITT, 4B

at the Showgrounds on Wednesday afternoons, it was a different story. Footscray was a very prominent team, being successful in reaching the final played at Albert Park, but were then defeated.

W. LINDEMAN, 4B Footscray again entered a team in one of the five sections of the Technical Schools competition, and once again finished second in the section to Sunshine. Other schools in the section were Essendon, Glenroy, Tottenham and Williamstown.

Footscray for most of the year combined together exceedingly well, those showing out being Copley, Bohnke, Quinn and Mullen. Stuber, Adams, Mak, Kotow, Patsamanis, Sofia and Battaglia were others to show out from time to time. When Bill Kotow was moved to goalkeeper later in the season he did an excellent job in this difficult position.

At the end of the season Footscray had defeated all comers except Sunshine, who must be complimented on going on to win the Technical Schools' championship. Two of Footscray's players were selected to play in the Combined Technical Schools' team which defeated the Combined High Schools 5-0. These two boys were Craig Copley and Gordon Mullen, who played in the positions of right wing and left back respectively, and who both gave a good account of themselves in this game.

Thanks must once again go to Mr. Nuttall, who coached the team for part of the season. Without the encouragement and supervision which he gave, Footscray would not have fared as well. Thanks also to Mr. T. Green, who took over the team in Mr. Nuttall's absence. Although not a soccer man Mr. Green deserves praise for his surprising and wonderful attention.

Statistics—Games played 10. Games won 8. Games lost 2 (to Sunshine).

Goals for—52; goals against—10.

Goal scorers—Mullen 30, Bohnke 11, Copley 8, Adams, Stuber, Kotow one each.

LACROSSE Once again Footscray were entered in the Inter Technical Schools' Lacrosse competition, and once again the team found success very elusive, losing every match, mainly due to lack of experience. All members of our team were new to the game while many opposing teams had very experienced players. Although this was our second in lacrosse, all last year's side had left so that we were forced to start afresh.

As the season progressed the side learned a lot from other teams, and the standard of play improved greatly.

In early games Footscray were soundly beaten, but were able to keep the scores down to more respectable proportions in the later games. Valuable experience gained should result in a better team next year.

Best players during 1960 were Smith, O'Connor, Milan, Lane. (David as captain was too modest to include himself, ed.).

D. MAYNE, 3A BASKETBALL A Footscray Technical College team was ente ed in the Under 16 Basketball competition, held at the Basketball Stadium, Albert Park on Friday nights. Footscray was placed in "A" grade, by virtue of winning a grading match. "A" grade proved to be very strong, with a number of very experienced teams taking part, but our team was by no means disgraced. With the help of Mr. Harrison, Footscray shaped quite well, giving many of the top teams stern competition, and also gaining valuable experience, but unfortunately finished well down the ladder.

SOCCER This year Footscray boys were successful in three finals in the Inter-Technical Schools championships, played at Brunswick.

under 14 doubles. Trevor Davidson and Jeff Bently combined well to win the under 15 doubles. Trevor also reached the final in the singles. In the under 16 section our singles entries were eliminated early, but Robert Mann and Barry Tempest managed to reach the semi-finals in the doubles.

The team for the combined sports met with slightly better success this year than for some time, eventually finishing third. Those who were successful in winning events were H. Stuber (open breaststroke), C. Peatling (open diving and under 14 breaststroke), and the under 14 relay team (R. Foy, K. Coster, E. Ebell and C. Peatling).

WRESTLING Under the expert coaching of Mr. Wal Vernon the College wrestlers were successful in gaining three medals in the Victorian Junior Titles. Victor Pelligrini won a silver medal, while bronze medals were won by Brian Walsh and Carl Anderson. The other members of the team were unsuccessful.

At present the team is in training for the Victorian Intermediate Championships, to be held during November of this year.

R. NOLAN, 4D.

ATHLETICS On Tuesday, September 27, Footscray competed in A Section of the Metropolitan Technical Schools' Sports at Olympic Park.

Although the weather was not particularly kind to us, an interesting programme eventuated. Unfortunately our representatives found the opposition a little too good, with the result that Footscray finished eighth in eight schools. Our congratulations go to Essendon on their success. On Monday, October 3, the championship day was held.

Two Footscray boys succeeded in winning events. L. Dalton put up a meritonous performance in winning the under 13 high jump with a leap of 4ft. 8in. J. DeZoete was successful in winning the under 15 880 yards race.

SWIMMING For the first time for some years the interhouse swimming sports were held as a combined event rather than inter-form events.

An interesting afternoon ended with the Wombats running out winners of the sports.
