MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR This year marks the 150th Anniversary of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce!

It is with great pleasure that I take on my role as the Chair of The Chamber Board in this monumental year of accomplishment. Our 150 years of history have been pivotal to developing our community in many areas. The creation of a fast-ferry terminal (Swartz Bay), the adoption of jet service (Victoria International Airport) and the creation of a local University (UVic) are just a few of the key elements the Chamber has been involved in over the years. Please join me in celebrating 150 years of success in Greater Victoria, and in toasting the next 150 years of our development at throughout our celebratory events this year.

As we celebrate 150 years of growth and development, we need to continue The Chamber’s good work.

2013 has already proven to be an

exciting year with the re-introduction of PST, a significant assessment of BC Ferries and a provincial election on May 14th. The longer-term prospects of a proposed national marine conservation area, regional transportation, provincial natural gas rates, infrastructure management, and BC Ferries will continue to occupy many of our resources. Both the Chamber’s bi-monthly magazine Business Matters and our website hold insightful information on many of these items and other key issues, and we will continue to update these valuable resources.

The Chamber will continue to advocate for regional construction projects that enhance our region using an infrastructure priority list to solicit governments for their support. Like the previous 150 years, 2013 will see new policy that supports business while advocating for progress on your behalf, as well as ongoing networking and learning opportunities.

If you look at the next page over, you’ll see members who have been part of the Chamber since before 1963. Many of them have been Chamber members

much longer. Having been founded just over a year after the City of Victoria was incorporated; the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has been deeply involved in Greater Victoria’s history. Flip to page 6 to catch up on some of these noteworthy moments in time.

1861: Victoria boasts a population of 608 permanent residents.

The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce was founded on February 9, 1863. Its first task was to organize an armed escort to accompany gold shipments from the Cariboo Region. As The Chamber celebrates its 150th Anniversary, we look back to some noteworthy moments in Greater Victoria’s history in which the Chamber played a pivotal role. Robert Burnaby: The first President of the GreaterVictoria Chamber of Commerce 1893: Construction of British Columbia Legislative Buildings begins.

FUN FACTS

1942: Royal Roads becomes home to Canada’s Navy College.

1893: In February The Chamber, then known as Board of Trade, occupied its new building in Bastion Square.

1960: BC Ferry Corporation is founded.

1908: Empress Hotel, designed

by Legislative Buildings designer Francis Rattenbury, opens for business.

1925: The Victoria Cougars win the Stanley Cup.

1963: Victoria College becomes the University of Victoria.

1980: Islanders watch and cheer as Terry Fox begins his cross country Marathon of Hope.
