Rich Hall’s Hoedown Age restriction 14+

Rich Hall’s critically acclaimed new show begins its second leg of touring. There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. Hall’s precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever. His BBC Four documentaries, most recently Rich Hall’s Countrier Than You and Rich Hall’s Presidential Grudge Match and BBC Radio 4 series Rich Hall’s (US Election) Breakdown have built him a new legion of followers, as has appearances on Have I Got News For You and QI. But if you’ve only ever seen Hall on TV, you’ve short-changed yourself. The Hoedown begins as a withering dissection of Trump’s America, but ends up being a celebration of Americana. There¹s stand-up, improvised ballads, cracking good musicianship, and ultimately a hilarious, foot- stomping, shit-kicking good time to be had by all. Even if you don’t own a hoe.

The Blues Band

Formed in 1979 by five seasoned musicians, The Blues Band are celebrating thirty-nine glorious years as Britain and Europe’s leading exponents of one of the greatest musical traditions of all time. It began back then with a phone call by Paul Jones, actor, singer, musician and radio presenter, no stranger to the pop charts throughout the 1960s as front man for the hugely successful Manfred Mann. His fellow Manfred, Tom McGuinness, shared the same love of the music - he’d started out with Eric Clapton in the Roosters. And they knew the right people to make their idea for a band just to play the blues work. The rest, as the saying goes, is history; TV, films, a stadium tour with Dire Straits and over twenty albums. Other blues groups come and go but it takes something special to achieve the iconic prestige enjoyed by The Blues Band. If you want to know what thirty-nine years of skill and devotion sound like, here’s your chance - if you love the blues, it doesn’t get any better than The Blues Band.

Ilfracombe Film Festival silent films

Fri 20 April, 8pm

Sat 21 April, 4pm

(1919) / 70mins (18) Director: Irvin V Willat

(1925) / 110mins (U) Director: Harry O Hoyt

Described as “the holy grail of (graphic) silent horror films” by the BFI, Behind the Door is a film experience that cannot be forgotten. Shocking to a level few expect in silent cinema, the film uses explicit violence and implicit horror to tell a tale scarred by the traumas of The First World War.

Eight years before King Kong (1933), Willis O’Brien brought his masterful skills at stop motion animation to the big screen via Harry O Hoyt’s authorised adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s thrilling dinosaur adventure classic, The Lost World.

Behind the Door

After having been lost and incomplete for years, this stunning new tinted restoration pieces together the most complete version of the film available since 1919. This mind blowing silent film will be accompanied by a new recorded score by highly celebrated silent film pianist, Stephen Horne.

Fri 4 May, 8pm

Ed Byrne: Spoiler Alert

“I originally intended to call the show, “I’ll Millennial You In A Minute”, but my promoter considered the title “off puttingly baffling”. That’s my own chainsaw in the photo, by the way.” Is life bad or have we good reason to complain about it? Are we filled with righteous anger at a world gone wrong or are we all just a bunch of whiny little brats? In short, are we spoiled? Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself.
