Ethan and the Bean Opens in Little Falls

A Frighteningly Fun Fundraiser

E

than and the Bean held their Grand Opening last month on November 16, marking the opening of their first retail store. The ribbon cutting was attended by Little Falls Mayor James Damiano. Said Pam Donovan, founder of Ethan and the Bean, “This is a culmination of a dream to open a store with the mission of not only providing an inviting place to grab a cup of coffee in the morning or to meet up with friends after the morning rush, but to provide job training for valuable yet under recognized members of our community: young people with intellectual and/or developmental delays.” “Where Hope is Always Brewing” is more than just a tag line for Ethan and The Bean, a non-profit, New Jersey registered 501(c)(3). The goals of the organization and the new retail location are simple and from the heart. Says Ms. Donovan, “We want to train and employ a significant number of persons with intellectual or developmental delays, become an active member of the community, and change the way people see these special souls challenged by disabilities. We value and respect all who train with us and all who walk through our doors.”

R

obert Calderone and Dr. Joseph Amorino hosted a Halloween party at their gothic hilltop home on Upper Mountain Avenue on October 26. Cowboys, witches, space men, Ninja Turtles, the Addams Family and more than 100 other costumed guests showed up to celebrate. The house is known for being distinctive and eerie, but kicks into over the top during the Halloween season. Dr. Amorino, a professor and artist, handcrafted the gargoyles and medieval specter that graced the front yard. Gikas Painting and Carpentry crafted the bloody circus tent where various entertainers including the renowned contortionist “The Amazing Amy” put on a magical performance. Christina Mihalis of Gikas had one of the night’s best costumes. She came as “The Eye.” The event raised more than $3,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

L

acordaire Academy began its Centennial year celebrating “A Century of Faith, Academics, and Character” on October 24, with a Mass said by The Most Reverend Bishop Manuel A. Cruz, D.D. of the Archdiocese of Newark. The Mass, concelebrated by Fr. Marc Viccari, was held on the front lawn of the Upper Montclair Academy with a crowd of 500, including over 40 Dominican Sisters, many of whom had taught or served as administrators at Lacordaire. Following the Mass, Megan Mannato, Interim Head of School and Nick De Toustain, Director of Development, led the rededication of Lacordaire’s administration building. During the re-dedication, the convent was renamed “James Hall” in honor of the James family, who have consistently provided support in the form of scholarships, donations, and volunteerism for over four decades.

A Camera Q&A with UNIQUE PHOTO! By Jackie Schatell, Photo by Dan Epstein

C

ameras are not only becoming smarter and more compact–they also make a perfect holiday gift, according to Unique Photo’s President Alexander Sweetwood. Here, Sweetwood shares what is new in the world of cameras and some ideas for holiday shopping.

What’s new in the camera world? Recently we’ve seen a large expansion of the mirrorless camera market with many manufacturers introducing their own take on the mirrorless camera system. Mirrorless cameras, as compared to DSLRs, use the camera’s sensor to relay the image through an electronic viewfinder. Without the need to fit mirrors into their design, mirrorless cameras allow a lighter, more compact camera without sacrificing image quality.

even onto a subject’s eye, with extreme accuracy even if the subject is in motion. This is valuable as it frees photographers up from having to worry whether or not their picture is in focus. Another great feature is the ability to send photos and HD videos to one’s phone, allowing us to share our photographs and videos with the world in higher quality–almost instantly.

Are there any new camera gadgets? Being able to back up your work using on-the-go accessories like the Gnarbox 2.0 lets you store your images from your memory card without the need of a computer. Since it utilizes your cell phone, there’s no need to lug a computer. This lightens the photographer’s load considerably.

Are there any cool new features on cameras these days?

What new types of cameras should people know about?

One great new camera feature is the updated autofocusing system, which lets the camera lock onto a face, and

Fujifilm has created a 100 Megapixel camera called the Fujifilm GFX 100, Winter 2019

which is an amazing feat. Now, you can print photographs larger than life and still see the many details inside. In addition, bridge cameras, which fall between point and shoot and DSLRs, like the Sony RX100 series or the Lumix LX100 II, aren’t acknowledged enough. They are extremely portable, but they have a larger sensor and better lenses than cell phones have, so they can take even more beautiful photographs. They also work better in low light conditions.

What cameras will be popular gifts for the holidays, and why? There are a few! The newly announced Nikon Z50, Canon EOS M6 II, and the Sony A6100 will surely be promising gifts for the holidays. They are extremely compact and will preserve many of our customer’s memories.

The Spin Doctors Perform

“From Swastika to Jim Crow”

The Spin Doctors are the last men standing, still making music like their lives depend on it, still riding the bus, still shaking the room. They’ve never been a band for backslaps and self-congratulation. Even now, plans are afoot for a seventh studio album and another swashbuckling world tour, adding to their tally of almost two thousand shows. 8pm. The Wellmont Theater, 5 Seymour St., Montclair. 973-7839500. wellmonttheater.com

Explore how in the early 1930s, Jewish professors from Nazi Germany lost their jobs and ended up coming to America where they were only able to find employment teaching at traditionally black colleges in the still-segregated South. Dr. Lillie Edwards, Professor Emerita of History and African-American Studies at Drew University, will introduce and present this important film, and lead the conversation afterwards. Light refreshments will be served. 3-5:30pm. B’nai Shalom, 300 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. 973-731-0160. Register at www.clc.bnaishalom.net

Jesse Rubin Performs

Thursday, January 30 UNMASKED: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber

Jesse Ruben is a Philly born singer/songwriter currently living in Brooklyn. He has released four independent albums, with his fifth, “A Reply To Violence”, due next year. 7pm. The Troubadour Acoustic Concert Series, Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Rd., Morristown. www.folkproject.org

Written with Richard Curtis and directed by Laurence Connor, Unmasked is a not-always-reverential look at Andrew’s life and musical career. You’ll hear his best-loved work, including classics from Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, and more, in sometimes new and unexpected ways. This new production will also feature new material and rediscovered gems, along with the history of their creation intertwined with Andrew’s extraordinary personal story. Runs through March 1. Paper Mill Playhouse, 22 Brookside Drive, Millburn. 973376-4343. www.papermill.org

Lure Lash Offers an Innovative Eyebrow Solution

M

ontclair’s Lure Lash is well known for their high-quality lash extensions, but did you know that they also offer microblading? This eyebrow solution is continuing to grow in popularity, especially for those who have lost their brows through age or disease. A form of semi-permanent makeup, microblading is an innovative solution that uses a specific technique to recreate hair strokes. It partially or fully camouflages missing eyebrow hair with the appearance of simulated hair, using fine deposits of cosmetic tattoo pigments. The technique is done using a blade like tool, giving appearance of a natural brow.

The space has been transformed it into a new lightfilled, state-of-art surgical office and spa.

Turn Your Home into a Natural Oasis A s the year comes to an end, many people make resolutions to start the New Year strong. This might mean ramping up your workout routine, increasing your self-care regimen or finding time to de-stress.

The EPA reports we spend 90 percent of our time indoors, but most people feel that spending time in nature has a positive effect on their mental well-being and stress level, according to a recent YouGov study commissioned by VELUX. So, if your goal is to de-stress, here are some healthy behaviors and design tips to help you bring nature’s sanctuary indoors.

Fill your home with photos of nature Surrounding yourself with images of nature can have a positive effect on wellness. Try framing some photos of special memories in nature like a hike with your family, beach sunset or mountain view.

Let in more fresh air and natural light Today’s homes are built tighter and more sealed, which means they trap toxins from daily living - such as cooking, cleaning, pets and more - inside. Adding skylights that can open is a simple home renovation project to improve fresh air flow, helping rid indoor air of pollutants. Additionally, studies show that exposure to natural light helps to sync your circadian rhythm, allowing for better sleep at night.

Fill your home with natural scents Up your chef game by using fresh herbs in your cooking that will fill your kitchen with natural fragrance. Making an indoor herb garden ensures you’ll always have some on hand. You can also incorporate fresh herbs into bouquets or wreaths for a natural air freshener throughout your home.

Meditate or do yoga in the morning Waking up with stretching or meditating is a great way to prepare yourself for a successful day. Open the blinds or curtains on your windows and skylights to 72

let in early morning light and help you feel invigorated and refreshed.

Go green with your décor Reap the benefits of nature by bringing it inside, adding greenery or even fruit into your décor. The possibilities are endless use a bowl of fresh fruit as a centerpiece or mix different sizes of pots to create a succulent gallery. Little touches of green in each room will go a long way.

Use natural cleaning products Many common cleaning products have harsh chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed into your skin. Combat the dangers of these toxins by switching to natural cleaning products. You’ll feel safer and more relaxed when your home is chemical-free. From boosting your home’s natural light to going green and adding plant life, it’s easy to turn your home into a natural oasis with these simple steps. Spa Owner Combines Love of Running with Helping Charities Photo by Dan Epstein

A

fter being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer at the beginning of 2019, Alla Shapiro, owner of the Woodhouse Day Spa in Montclair, decided to start running marathons. While going through treatments, running helped her to be more herself and feel stronger physically and emotionally. She made a decision to run her first marathon in 2019 and then to compete in the top 6 Marathon Majors. Earlier this year, Shapiro ran the Berlin Marathon, and recently took part in the NYC Marathon, running for a charity called Fred’s Team (benefitting Sloan Memorial Cancer Center, where she was treated). She is registered for Tokyo in 2020 and will also be running for the Cam Neely Foundation in the Boston Marathon. Cam Neely Foundation helps cancer patients and their families with their traveling and living arrangements when they need to go for treatments outside of their local areas. “I am very passionate about helping people with cancer and I am happy that I can combine my dream of running marathons and helping charities at the same time,” said Shapiro. Beautiful Smiles Start Here!

T

he things that make hair look pretty, such as highlights, hairspray and flat irons, are the very same things that lead it to its demise—a deadly combination of bleach, alcohol and 400ºF titanium plates. But even if your mane is brittler than the boar’s hair you brush it with, you can still give it a fighting chance by treating it to a weekly (or bi-weekly) deep conditioning regimen. Pure coconut oil is an awesome alternative to name brand hot oil treatments; it makes hair incredibly soft and shiny, without any added ingredients. You can pick up a jar of it in the cooking oil aisle of your local supermarket. Coconut oil has buttery consistency; when it’s cold, its solid, but it melts easily. Keeping the jar closed, run it under hot water until it starts to liquefy. On average, you’ll only need about an ounce of it to do the trick. You can apply it from roots to ends, or, if you’re prone to an oily scalp, just the ends. Leave it on for as long as you want—15 minutes, a few hours, or even overnight—then rinse your hair as normal.

F L O AT I N G T H E R A P Y:

MassagingtheMindandBody

By Christine S. Maxwell

S

ince opening two years ago, Salt Float Center in Montclair has hosted more than 7,000 visits from clients ages 9 through 86, who have enjoyed the healing effects of float therapy. “I believe that everyone can benefit from float therapy,” states owner Rob McDonald.

The refocusing and rebalancing of one’s sensory awareness are the hallmarks of R.E.S.T., often resulting in profound relaxation and relief from physical and mental pain, including stress, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, arthritis, and pregnancy-related discomfort.

While floating is considered an alternative therapy, its benefits are well documented in Restrictive Environmental Stimulation Therapy (R.E.S.T.) scientific research.

Floating offered at Salt Float Center draws upon the therapeutic restorative and regenerative effects of R.E.S.T. The center maintains several tub-like facilities–two Float Suites and a Float Orb. Although slightly different in design, both types deliver the same results. Each contains about ten inches of water, includes roughly 1100 pounds of dissolved Epsom salt, and maintains a 93.5-degree water temperature. This salty, temperaturecontrolled, gravity-free environment encourages the therapeutic benefits of R.E.S.T as well as the similar salt-healing attributes of the Dead Sea.

Winter 2019

After lying in the tub, turning out the lights, and eliminating any sounds, the client floats effortlessly in a private spa setting for 60-120 minutes. Within the first 20 minutes of floating, cortisol and adrenaline decline while endorphins and dopamine increase, inducing a “runner’s high.” The rapid rush of the feel-good hormones produces a deep state of relaxation. Most guests drift naturally into a meditative state. Inflammation decreases and mental blocks clear, causing a post-treatment euphoria of wellness and creativity that can last for days. States McDonald, “With floating, guests can experience ultimate ‘me time’ in an environment their mind and body have never had the sublime pleasure of enjoying.”

New Year, New You–Fitness

A Boutique Indoor Rowing Studio

R

ow House is a boutique fitness concept that is revolutionizing the way people view indoor rowing. Co-founders and husband/wife team, Eric Von Frohlich and Debra Strougo took the rowing machine out of the corner, and put it front in center. Born of the couple’s search for a workout that two individuals with varying fitness levels could do together, they created a workout that gives people of all different shapes, sizes, and abilities an efficient and effective workout. At Row House Montclair, a variety of classes are offered, including Power, House, Body, Full Row, Stroke, Restore, and Launch. Build strength, endurance, and confidence with the different class types. Each class has a different focus and programming varies to help you progress throughout the week to avoid plateaus.

The Ulimate Stretch with StretchLab

N

o two bodies are the same, and therefore no two stretches at StretchLab are the same. Through their team of highly trained Flexologists®, StretchLab helps give clients a deeper stretch than they could ever achieve on their own. One-on-one stretching is about identifying tightness and imbalances in the body and customizing a stretch routine that is just for every individual. Clients come in with pain, tightness and tension, but keep coming back to experience the freedom that comes with having a wider range of motion and flexibility.

Packages are available to visit the studio multiple times a month...whether that’s 4 times, 8 times, or unlimited!

At their location in Livingston, StretchLab offers a full schedule of one-on-one stretches throughout the week, with 25 minute and 50 minutes options. First time stretches are $29 for 25 minutes, and $49 for 50 minutes. Group stretches are also occasionally available.
