able to Table, NJ’s first food rescue organization has received a $100,000 grant from Impact100 Garden State for its program, “Food Rescue Heroes: Bridging the Gap Between Food Waste & Food Insecurity.” This generous funding will enable the nonprofit, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, to expand its mission of rescuing food, reducing waste, and alleviating hunger into Morris County. This expansion adds to its existing service areas of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties. Food rescue efforts for this grant will be supported by Table to Table I-Rescue, a volunteerbased app powered by Food Rescue Hero.

Rediscovering Roots: A Journey of Family, Fate, and Healing
Cynthia North, 55, of Maplewood, underwent a profound transformation in 2024. Raised without knowing any blood relatives after her mother, Purita, a nurse from Sorsogon in the Philippines, married Louis North of Newark, who passed away early in Cynthia’s childhood, leading to estrangement from their families due to religious and cultural differences.
Cynthia, raised by her hard-working single mother, worked over 30 years in Corporate America when she decided to take purposeful pause and reevaluate all aspects of her life. It was a cathartic experience, and she prayed for guidance from her parents. Immediately following that manifestation, she was contacted by longlost Filipino cousins who were now living in the US, who found her through Ancestry.com and Facebook. Simultaneously, relatives from her father’s side in Florida traced her via Ancestry. com and LinkedIn and reached out a few weeks apart. Reconnecting with kin from both sides, Cynthia introduced them to her family, forming deep bonds. Inspired by this reunion, she courageously made significant life and career changes, embracing fate and purpose. Her journey underscores the power of the internet, connection, and the profound impact of family during life’s critical moments.

VISUAL VOICES THROUGH THE LENS: EMPOWERING OTHERS THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

LLisa Rayman Goldfarb, a photographer from Maplewood with a portrait studio in Millburn, dedicates her life to capturing special moments and teaching others the art of photography. She views her passion as more than just a profession; it’s a powerful medium for storytelling. Whether she’s taking a portrait, creating fine art, or teaching someone how to use a camera, her mission remains the same: using her photography skills to inspire and empower others.
Lisa’s charitable spirit is woven deeply into her work. One of her deepest collaborations has been with Isaiah House, a family shelter in East Orange. Introduced to the organization in 2016, she quickly started photographing the staff, residents, and events. She also co-chaired the Happy Spaces Project, which invited local designers to revamp the shelter’s interiors, transforming cinder block walls and cement floors into inviting, modern spaces. Lisa helped to raise awareness and money for the project as well as documenting the entire process from start to finish. Recently, she and fellow photographer Jamie Meier, donated their time to take portraits of Isaiah House families for Mother’s Day.
She has also extended her charitable reach internationally. While living in Hong Kong, Lisa worked with the Centre for Refugees, using her photography skills again to raise awareness and money.
Lisa is similarly dedicated to education. She teaches photography to both children and adults, sharing the fundamentals and nuances of capturing light and emotion. Her ultimate goal is to raise money to buy equipment so that she can extend these lessons to underprivileged children, giving those who may not have access to cameras or classes the chance to learn this valuable skill.
A commitment to community is evident in Lisa’s involvement with local events.
She frequently donates portrait sessions for school fundraisers and sports teams, helping raise money with her art. She also participates in events such as Millburn Girls Night Out, where she volunteers to engage with locals.
Lisa’s journey is one of creativity, passion and giving back. Her work in photography transcends traditional bounds of the profession, making a tangible difference in the lives of the people she photographs and instructs. By empowering others to see more sharply through the lens, she helps them find their voices and tell their stories, one image at a time. Her charitable endeavors, combined with her educational initiatives, make Lisa a vital part of the community. She keeps finding new ways to use her skills for the greater good, proving that a picture is worth even more than a thousand words when it helps change lives.

A Pillar of Community and Library Advocacy in Millburn

DDorothy Kelly of Short Hills embodies community spirit and dedication, tirelessly working to make her town a better place. She is renowned for her unwavering commitment to improving local services, fostering unity among residents, and enhancing educational programs.
As the President of Friends of the Millburn Library since 2018, Dorothy has spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at revitalizing the library and supporting the community. Dorothy’s passion for libraries is evident in her relentless efforts to promote their relevance in the digital age. “People don’t realize how much more libraries offer beyond books,” she says. From educational programs to community events, the Millburn Library has become a hub of activity, thanks in large part to Dorothy’s advocacy.
One of her major projects is the annual library book sale, an event she has managed since 2017. The sale, held every May, involves sorting and selling between 50,000 to 70,000 donated books. Dorothy and her team of volunteers meticulously organize the books, transforming the library’s second-floor auditorium into a sprawling marketplace. This event is not just a fundraiser, raising between $15,000 to $20,000 each year, but also a community gathering where residents can connect and share their love for reading.
Dorothy also ensures the library remains a welcoming space with projects like the library garden, which she and her team maintain, and the installation of permanent Little Free Libraries around town. These initiatives provide constant access to books and encourage a culture of reading.
Beyond her work with the library, Dorothy is deeply involved in educational programs within the Millburn school district. As the chair of the Caring Kids program, she leads character-building classes for students in all the district elementary schools from kindergarten
through fifth grade. These classes cover topics like empathy, understanding differences, and anti-bullying strategies, helping children develop into compassionate and considerate individuals.
In addition, Dorothy serves as the curator of the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society Museum. Her role involves preserving and showcasing the rich
history of the area, ensuring that the stories of Millburn’s past continue to inspire future generations.
Through her various roles, Dorothy has made a significant impact on Millburn. Her dedication is an inspiration. Her tireless efforts exemplify what it means to be a true community champion, making a difference one book, one program, and one smile at a time.

MORRIS MUSEUM PRESENTS Maureen Chatfield: Journey and Destination
TThe Morris Museum presents an exhibition of New Jerseybased artist Maureen Chatfield. Maureen Chatfield: Journey and Destination features large-scale works that she renders using broad brush strokes and vibrant colors in a unique blend of Abstract Expressionism and Bay Area Figurative painting. In this exhibition, works drawn from Chatfield’s extensive oeuvre investigate journeys remembered and destinations experienced. Oversized oil on canvas paintings dating from 1999-2002 are from the artist’s self-titled “Out of My Mind” series, in which visual narratives explore humorous and emotional memories of family outings and travel adventures. These reflections on relationships and universal experiences are exhibited alongside colorful landscapes from her “Abstract” series that capture moments of discovery and delight in vistas that are both intimate and expansive. TThe Maplewoodstock Music and Art Festival 2024 is back and better than ever! This annual free event will feature two days of live music, starting at noon and ending around 9:30 pm each day. Saturday night will close with a highenergy performance by Remember Jones, a national touring artist known as “New Jersey’s most ambitious song interpreter.” The following day, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country will headline, bringing an organic rock band aesthetic

Making Us Look, And Wonder

MMany area residents are familiar with the photographic work of Kate Albright. They may have seen her portraits of families in the homes of their neighbors, she has an uncanny way of getting kids to reveal a side of themselves they often keep hidden. Likewise, many people have seen the photographs she’s made over the years covering local news stories in the press. But it’s her fine art photographs that draw our attention this month.

She began to exhibit her personal work, the fine art images she made having nothing to do with news or commissioned portraits, in 2014. In the truest tradition of seeing the moments in everyday life that most of us just don’t, she simply intrigues us with her observations while often charming us at the same time.
In Knees, captured in Sitges, Spain in 2019, the simple incongruity stops us in our tracks. Midway between the softness of the sea, and hard edge of the rocks we see a pair of knees.
Seemingly detached from a body, alone on a what seems like a desolate beach we can’t help ourselves from wondering. Who is this? Why is this person here? It’s hard not to be charmed by the incongruity of the moment.
Parking Lot Island, made in 2021, offers us another question. Even after being told that it’s a Kmart parking lot, visited with her kids after exploring the Eagle Rock Reservation during a period of dense fog, we still can’t help feeling like we’re someplace else. Are we in the middle of a Stephen King novel? This remarkable photograph won an honorable mention in a photographic contest sponsored the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC called “The Best Photo Sitting On Your Phone”. We are not surprised.
Another prize winning image, this time at the Viewpoints exhibit sponsored by Studio Montclair in 2018 is On Red. Photographed at SUNY Purchase in 2017, we are struck with the simple beauty of this image, and it’s strangeness. What exactly is going on here? Why are those balloons tied to some kind of tripod, and displayed in
the middle of a startlingly red wall with no decoration on it? We find it hard to look away. You may as well.
Finally, Frozen Towel was photographed in 2022 while taking a walk in a Park near her home. Albright noticed first the beams of sunlight playing against an abandoned towel, frozen in the winter’s weather on the sidewalk. The same thing happens to us. We first notice the color of the light, then the geometry, and textures which call to us. It is then that we begin to wonder: wait, what is this and why is it there?
Whether she’s visually informing us about newsworthy goings on locally, or drawing our attention to the unusual she sees in everyday life, her photographs are worth a look. See more at her website and Instagram page.

Great ambiance and outstanding food will bring diners back again and again

CChef James DeSisto of Laboratorio Kitchen in Montclair is excited to bring his passion for food to a new restaurant in the heart of Maplewood Village. “Growing up, my grandfather had a pizzeria and instead of running around playing, I was always there,” he says. “I fell in love with food at a very young age.” As a chef, he enjoys the challenges and creativity of being in a kitchen, and the fact that every day is different. “It’s never the same, which keeps you on top of your game.”
His new restaurant in Maplewood will be known as Osteria LK. As Chef James explains, “the Osteria in Italy was traditionally a casual place for locals to come together, eat good food, drink wine, and share the news of the day. ‘LK’ is a nod to my restaurant in Montclair.”

Osteria LK, slated to open this summer in the former location of Arturo’s, has been completely redesigned and lovingly refurbished by the building’s owners to create a fresh, warm and inviting atmosphere, and features a 16’ telescoping door which engages the interior with the streetscape of the Maplewood Village.
The menu will be similar to a traditional Osteria offering elevated Italian food to include house made pastas, fire roasted entrees, an assortment of vegetable plates, seafood, pizza and desert. As with his other restaurant, all of the ingredients that go into his dishes will be top quality, seasonal and locally sourced.

WWhat does that saying really mean? It’s been a saying that I remember from my past experience in the martial arts and the research of martial arts masters.
Does that mean I don’t desire nice things? That I don’t want success? That I don’t reach out and grab opportunities or set goals?

Not really. I still do. But when so many of the martial arts masters from the past talked about this “effortless effort” and “detachment” it intrigued me.
There is a fine line between the study of Zen and what we call achievement and success. To achieve something great you need to have a hunger, desire, tenacity and go after it with all your might. But that’s contradictory to what Zen emphasizes.
The dictionary definition of Zen: An approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasizes simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on goals.
Does achievement without effort mean you don’t work hard? Not at all. It’s actually a detachment from the desire of caring too much about winning or caring too much about not winning. —And that’s where it gets difficult to put your arms around. It is
pure action with body and mind as one. Too much caring and desire for winning will get in the way of the performance.
There is a saying I have talked about in past columns, called Mushin, which means “no mind” or action without thinking. Yogi Berra said it best, “How can anybody hit and think at the same time.” Actions are pure and come naturally without thought. But the real key is detachment. Not to think and just do. Your body and mind are together and there are no thoughts disrupting the action. Because when you do not care you can be at ease.
One of my favorite books on this subject is “Zen in the Martial Arts,” by Joe Hyams. He tells a story about when he was training with his sensei who told him to hit a baseball mitt that was kept perfectly still. As soon as Joe got ready to punch he tensed up and his sensei was aware of his intention and he moved the mitt before Joe could strike it.
“Relax,” he said. “Stop straining. The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.” As soon as Joe relaxed his body and mind, he hit the target.
His sensei told him, “You stopped caring whether you hit the mitt or not. It is the caring or desire which stands in the way of effortless effort. You must stop caring about doing it and just do it—effortlessly and naturally as snow falls from the tree or water bubbles up from the spring.”
