As you know August is when the Sister hood trip to Denmark takes place, and as you are reading this the people on the trip, will either be on our way to Denmark, or the trip has already begun. I have been so excited and have been looking forward to this trip, not only because I get to travel to Denmark, but also because I have been able to invite my mom, Hanne, to go with me. She lives in Denmark so we will meet at the train station and go to the hotel together to start the 12 days of fun.
We could not imagine this trip without Benedikte Ehlers and Connie Schell who has been planning and taking reservations for this trip. I will encourage everyone to dream of going on one of our trips. We endeavor to go every 2 years, so start saving and come with the Sister hood on the next trip, hopefully, in 2024. Please remember that our National Sec retary, Glenda, will be sending out the Delegate packets to the lodge Secretaries this month. Be sure to select a delegate that will represent your lodge and possibly be elected to the National Board. If you have any questions regarding the packet, please contact Glenda at Secretary@ DanishSisterhood.com. She is your best source of information.

In July, I celebrated 10 years with the Danish Sisterhood. In my 10 years with the organization, I have seen a lot of things change. While there have been many changes, the traditional ele ments have remained in tact.
I think the one thing that we can work to change more is complacency. We cannot keep our organization going by being complacent and not getting involved. It's important for each of us to step up and do what we can to help our orga nization survive, and more importantly, thrive.
I understand how life can get busy with family, friends, and work. It's important to find a good balance with involvement in the Sisterhood and part of that is making sure that everyone is doing their part. Do you have an event coming up in your lodge? See if the organizer needs some assistance! Do you have a story to share? Send it on to your favorite DSN. Have you been tak ing too much on? Make concrete asks of support from your fellow sisters. See a fun get together coming up? Put it on the calendar and bring a friend! It takes all of us and many different levels of involvement and support to keep the Sister hood going.
I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the end of summer. Please send along your sto ries, photos, and more to the DSN!
Until next time,
Lauren C. Nielsen, Editor editor@danishsisterhood.com

On a perfectly beautiful July 30th afternoon, Sarah Bengtson, Jim Bengtson, Erika Hansen, Jerry Johansen, Judy Johansen, and Paulette Fisher of Lodge #3, Davenport, Iowa joined Lodge #102 of Des Moines, Iowa for a 2 hour cruise on the Twilight River Boat, anchored in LeClaire, Iowa. The Twilight Captain explained history of that area of the Mississippi River that involved Robert E. Lee and spoke of the commerce we see on the river today and pointed out the miles of water lilies currently in bloom along the Iowa and Illinois shore lines. It was a sunny, breezy, pleasant time together as Danish Sisters.
On September 14, 1884 our Lodge #3 was organized and we will celebrate our 138th anniversary next month. We are thankful for all the friendships, memories and Danish history that our Lodge #3 has provided.
This year, more than ever, it's important to share holiday cheer with our fellow Sisters. Interested in taking out an ad? Here's what you need to know:

When Hygge #188 was chartered in 2018, Sandra Parker agreed to be our president.
Think about all the changes that have been needed to keep a fledgling lodge active during the pandemic months! There was little tradition to cling to but by the same token, our expectations were fewer. Our goal was to stay together and adhere to our vision statement to “maintain a sup portive atmosphere of mutual respect, honesty and caring concern for one another at all times”.
Under Sandy’s leadership, Hygge has stayed ac tive, missing very few meetings but doing fundraisers in order to continue our benevolent giving locally and nationally.
In the words of the proclamation, Sandy has been patient and diligent as she guided us through Covid protocols, extreme weather conditions, or ganizing alternative meeting forms (Zoom aided by Sister Jean Hoiland), and connecting with members ensuring their well-being. She has demonstrated
the Hygge principle of Harmony (It’s not a competition. There is no reason to brag about anything.) Sandra Parker, Hygge President 20222023, Outstanding Sister, Indeed!!
Sandra Nelson, Hygge SecretaryJoyce Irene McGough was born April 4th, 1949, in Powell, WY. Joyce passed away peacefully in hospice care in Littleton, CO on 2nd July, 2022, at the age of 73. Her family was from Powell, WY, and moved to Denver in 1968. She joined our Lodge in December, 2018, and came to meetings and joined our craft get-togethers sharing good times and good crafting.
Joyce was a very kind and thoughtful per son. She was very involved in genealogy and her
search for her family history took her to Salt Lake City and also to Denmark where her paternal grandfather Hans Miller was from. She enjoyed the travelling. Joyce loved animals and had two cats which she loved spending time with in her final years. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Tom, son Shawn, brother Ken and her parents Reed and Lorraine Miller. She is survived by two younger brothers Bruce and Brad. Our kind and gentle Danish Sister Joyce will be remembered as a friend and Sister. We celebrate her long life, and mourn her passing with her surviving family.

Our 2022-2023 program year continued with several interesting programs as we met via Zoom, staying in touch and learning.
For our January meeting Lisa Petersen gathered and shared information on Danish in ventors. Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen and his brother Lars were creators of a technology which would eventually become Google Maps. Peter L Jensen was the first to manufacture a type of loudspeak er. Lars Engstrøm made a bike with a large cargo area on the front which can transport cargo or a person. Ole Kirk Kristiansen founded LEGO. Emil
Christian Hansen isolated a pure cell of yeast which avoided “beer sickness”, a phenomenon that made beer undrinkable.
In February Katrina Parker used Google Maps pictures to help us “travel” to places in Denmark. Lodge members sent addresses that were meaningful to them, and we also looked at some tourist attractions. We saw Hans Chris tian Andersen’s home, Lego House, and Aero Island. We saw the cities of Esbjerg, Svendborg, Herning, Kolding and Copenhagen. We saw Rise Kirke with its cemetery plots amid beautifully manicured gardens. We were tourists at The Little Mermaid, the colorful houses of Nyhaven, Skagen, and walked through Tivoli and Christian ia (Copenhagen’s Hippie commune).
Our March speaker was Cheyenne Jans datter, the archives manager for the Museum of Danish America. Cheyenne shared information on the museum and the archives. She talked about the collection of Danish Sisterhood arti facts, which is the largest collection in the muse um. In 2016, 78 boxes of artifacts were brought to the Museum. Over time, they were sorted, archived, and stored correctly to slow deterio ration. Cheyenne pulled out a few things that were about our lodge including a 1976 national convention program and a group photo from the convention. Karen Kollar and Kim Renehan were excited to see their mother, Bettie Bates, in the picture. Lodge members will share the identity of those they recognize with Cheyenne. Cheyenne then walked us around in a virtual tour showing us vaults where items are kept. This included
textiles, costumes, straw shoes, paintings, house hold items, porcelain and much more. Also on display in the vault for us was the huge Danish Flag donated by the Hartford Lodge of the Dan ish Brotherhood.
In April we had another Danish “Show and Tell” since we enjoyed it so much last year. Betty Titus showed one of many Royal Copenhagen coasters she uses at her tea parties as well as an oval painting which was her grandparents’. Gail Mitchell shared a Royal Copenhagen wood worker figurine which reminded her of her father. Lisa Petersen shared one of the large watercolor landscape paintings her husband’s grandparents brought back from Denmark. Sarah Petersen shared a B&G seagull tea cup and a porcelain plaque with a short poem (a gruk in Danish) by the writer/poet Piet Hein. Kendra Dubiel shared an anchor which had thermometer and mer maid on it and a small kitchen sign of things that are the definition of being Danish. Karen Kollar shared an 8” tall palace guard figure given to her when she was a child as well as an amber neck lace. We Googled amber to learn more about its connection to Denmark.
Show and Tell continued at our May meet ing. Katrina Parker shared photos of a large bell pull depicting Hans Christian Andersen stories. Jackie Smith spoke of a horseshoe made by her grandfather in Denmark and brought to America. Jackie’s father is still in possession of the horse shoe and Jackie still isn’t old enough to touch it (we laughed).
Submitted by Lisa Christensen Petersen, Presi dentColora do has officially welcomed sum mer with heat and no rain. Like so many oth er parts of the world, Colorado is experiencing drought, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have things to cele brate.
First off is Hockey. The 2022 Denver University hockey team won the National Cham pionship, East High School in Denver won State and this week all of Colorado is celebrating the Colora do Ava lanche’s win over the Tampa Bay Light ning in the Stanley Cup Finals. Next week we’ll be on to some thing else, but this week, we are all Hockey fans.
On June 1, Inge Nagata, our beloved sister, turned 99 years young. At the end of the lodge meeting on May 22, we celebrated Inge’s birth day. Inge wore a special crown of Danish flags made just for the occasion by Mindy Brown. Lunch was provided by the lodge, and to top off the celebration was an Othello cake from the Taste of Denmark, Inge’s cake of choice. On top of the cake was a candle like no other, provided by Sister Birthe. It was like a carousel that rotat ed and sang and continued to play even for hours later. Coffee, tea and cranberry akavit accom
panied the Othello. Oh, but wait, the celebration didn’t end there. The next craft meeting, Inge was able to celebrate her birthday again with a Danish layer cake made by Birgitte Jappe Ross. Happy Birthday Inge. All your Ellen Lodge sisters look forward to celebrating the big one next year when you turn 100.
Ellen Lodge Sisters have supplied our monthly meetings with some great heritage pre sentations:
Birgitte Jappe Ross gave an interesting report on her maternal great grandparents: Hans Peter Hansen and Jorgine Karoline Rasmussen, with a display of pictures and a Danish map pointing out the area in Denmark they came from.
Birgitte gave another interesting her presentation on Royal Copenhagen, The Official Royal Porcelain Factory, and its history. Do you know what the three waves on the back of the Royal Copenhagen por celain stands for? They represent the three inland waters. Oresund, Store baelt and Lillebaelt. Members were encouraged to bring their favorite Royal Copenhagen pieces to the meeting and share its importance in their lives.
So we never forget our members, past and present, Pia Edgar gave a very interesting talk about Erna Moller. Erna was a member of Ellen Lodge from 1965 until her passing in 2013. Pia displayed both Erna and her husband Kai’s cos tumes, plus a binder with the original handmade pattern and letters from Erna’s sister, explaining the colors, lace etc., needed for the costume. (For those of you who attended the 2015 National Convention, both costumes were on display).
On June 25th Ellen Lodge celebrated the
Summer Solstice at the home of Mindy Brown and her husband Rich Inman. The event was hosted by Rich and Mindy, Rene’ and Pia Han sen. There were 28 in attendance including family members. A very well constructed fire pit by Rich and Rene’ was a fitting place for many of the “scheduled” activities: baking the snobrad for the hotdogs, burning the witch and Pia Edgar’s traditional quiz. Everyone had their own stick (carefully crafted by Rene’) to wrap the snobrad around. The next step was to slowly bake it over the hot coals. When done, the bread is pulled off of the stick, and a nice hole is formed to “push” your hotdog through. I must admit, it was really quite tasty. To go along with the snobrad, was salads, baked beans, chicken, brats, etc. and des serts. There were even gummy worms for the kids. No one should have gone home hungry.
Next, everyone was to get a witches broom and on the attached slip of paper, write down all the things you want to send away: sad events, bad deeds ……………..Then, all together, toss the broom and note into the fire. Sure hope our wishes come true!!
Burning the witches broom was followed up by Pia Edgar’s quiz. This one was dedicated to Sankt Hans. There were only 8 questions, but as always, it was difficult and no one got a perfect score. Congratulations to Renee Hansen and Gwendolyn Bell (Joanna Christensen’s 8 year old granddaughter).
The weather forecast had mentioned rain,
so we were all prepared to go inside the Nissebo if need be, but the weather was just right; not too hot, not too cold. The kids had a great time and so did the grownups. It was a perfect evening and a perfect setting for the picnic. A big thank you to Rich, Mindy, Renee and Pia for hosting. Also, a shout out to Nick (Rene’ and Pia’s son) for making sure the coals were just right for the snobrad.
Our lodge has been blessed that we have not lost any of our Sisters throughout the pan demic, but we do have some with minor/major setbacks, which I’m sure the rest of the lodges have also experienced. So, from our lodge to yours, we are sending healing thoughts

The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available:
• A change of beneficiary to: Danish Sisterhood of America or, • A change of beneficiary to one of the national schol arship funds. Be specific, ie: Betty Hansen Scholarship, Past National Officers, Camp Grant, etc.
If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or the National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change Form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you'd be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category can participate by donat ing $1,000 to the Danish Sisterhood of America. On behalf of our entire membership, we wish to thank and honor as our first Angels:
