God dwells within you as yourself.
Thepurposeoflifeistodiscoverthatultimatetruth.Weallhavetheopportunityattain liberationbyraisingourconsciousnessbeyondthemisunderstandingthatweare separatefromGod.ItisGod’sGrace,combinedwithourdeepwishtogrow,that transformsourexperiencefromdualitytoUnity.Ifwe’reclearaboutwhatwewantinour lifeandcontinuallyfocusourlifeforcetowardthatinnertransformation,wecanachieve it.Rudisuccinctlyexpressedthiswhenhesaid,“Theequationforspiritualityisdepth overtime.”Thetitleofthisbookwaschosentohonormyteacherandtocapturethe essenceofthejourneyoftransformationandliberationavailabletousinthislifetime.
Whenlightningstrikes andnearstheground,its energeticfieldmagnetizes energyfromtheearth, drawingituptowarditself. Theascendingforceisnot visibleuntilitconnects withthedescendinglightning.Whatweseeisa patternoflight(calleda “leader”)thatspreadsand forksthroughthesky.Asit nearstheground,the leaderattractsanenergy(a “streamer”)thatrisesup fromtheearth.Whenthe leaderandstreamerconnect,apowerfulelectrical currentbeginsflowing.The connectioniscompleteandapparent.
Thisnaturalphenomenonbeautifullymirrorstheprocessofspiritualtransformation. AsGracedescends,ourindividualwishascendstomeetit.Untilthetwomeet,thecurrent cannotflow.IsitthedownwardmovementofGracethatliftstheascendingwishoutof us?Orisitourwishrising,whichdrawsdownGrace?Eitherway,thiscontactcompletesa connectionthatallowsthefullforceofthepoweroftheDivinetostrikeusatthecoreof ourbeing.

WearemirrorsofourDivineSource.God’swillandpower havebroughtusinto existence.EmbeddedwithinusistheGod-givenabilitytobe conscious,touseourwill,andtoact.OurwillandpowerarenotdifferentthanGod’s, meaningwehavethecapacityto createthelifewechoose.
Ioncesawadocumentaryaboutthetransformationofacaterpillarintoabutterfly. Whenitisreadytobecomeabutterfly,thecaterpillarcrawlsupintoatreeandwindsa cocoonaround itself.Thefirst marvelisthat thecaterpillar extractsfrom withinitselfa thread,whichit wrapsaround itsbody,creating thecocoon.
Inside, a miracle of nature to takes place. Anamazing metamorphosis happensasthe caterpillar dissolvesinto mush,yetitsessenceisthesameeventhoughtheformhaschanged.

Fromthatsoup,thebutterflyformsanewbodywithwings,theneatsitswayoutofthe cocoonandfliesoff. Thebutterflymayonly liveforashorttime, butitwentthroughan incrediblemetamorphosisjustfortheopportunitytofly!
Life is Consciousness pulsating into form, with form subsiding back into That.
Consciousness itselfneverchanges inthisprocess.Inthe processofbecoming, thereisnodiminishing ofbeing,noristherea diminishingofbein asitsubsides.The samevibrancyand consciousnessis always there,givingus thepowertochoose toundergoaradical transformationeven moremiraculousthan whathappenstoa caterpillar.

Lifeisaboutthepowerofchoice,thepowertocreate,andthepowertoliberate.Doyou wanttolivealifeofjoyornot?Thisisthefundamentalchoiceinlife.Wehavethepowerto createourlives,rightdowntoeverymomentandeveryexperienceinit.Wegettochoose whetherweliveintheunconditionaljoyoffreedomorinthepainandsufferingofnot knowingweareonewithGod.Myadviceistochoosethehighestinlife.Choosetolivein theexperienceoffreedom,purejoy,andunconditionallove.
Choosetransformationandliberation.Choosetoliveindeptheveryday.Chooseitover andover,againandagain.Wegettochoosewhetherweliveintheunconditionaljoyof freedomorinthepainandsufferingofnotknowingweareonewithGod.Myadviceis tochoosethehighestinlife.Choosetoliveintheexperienceoffreedom,purejoy,and unconditionallove.Choosetransformationandliberation.Choosetoliveindepthevery day.Chooseitoverandover,againandagain.

God Is One, Without a Second
The Chandogya Upaniṣad was written 3,000 years ago. Its entire exposition can be boiled down to this fundamental realization: “God is One, without a second.” This is the expression of a profound understanding, and a direct experience available to every human being, that all creation is simply One Thing. Attaining this realization requires a lifetime of transformation that will shatter every limited perception we have of life, because the experience of Oneness is so radically different from how we normally perceive and live in the world. What is this One Thing? We can call it “God,” or “Divinity,” or “Pure Consciousness.”
The vital force that creates and sustains the universe lives within us. In the Tantric tradition, this force is called Kuṇḍalinī, the energy within the psychic body that lies dormant in the base of the spine. Because the power of the universe is in us, we can learn how to find and connect to it. When we begin to activate this power, it dislodges any interior obstacles that block the Kuṇḍalinī energy from rising, a process that eventually reunites us with our Divine Source.

Tantrictraditionsdescribethestructureoflifeintermsofasilentoceanof infinite Consciousness(Siva)andacreative,activeforce(Sakti,Goddess,orKundalinī).
Kundalinī,byHerpowertomanifestcreation,alsohasthecapacitytohideHersilent Source.Ourexperienceisthatwegetabsorbedinmanifestation,intheactofliving, andforgetthatwithintheveryfabricofcreationthereisonlytheOnenessofGod.
Consciousness and its power to create are not separate.
EverythingonecanseethroughtheHubbletelescopeistheGoddessexpressing Herself,manifestingthroughHerpowertocreate.IftheGoddessdwellswithinusas ourselves,thenHerpowerexistswithinus,whichweuseeverydaytocreateourlife. ThereasonweengageinaspiritualpracticeistotapintothatGod-givenpowerwithin. Spiritualgrowthisalsounderstoodintermsofthedissolutionoftheego.Theegois notourpersonalitybuttheaspectofusthatbelievesweareseparatefromourSource. Spiritualpracticesarecalledsuchbecausetheytrainourawareness.Whenweproject thatvitalforceoutwardlyitcreatesduality,butwhenwelearntodirectitinward,it bringsustotheunityoflife.Thepurposeofspiritualpracticeistoreorientourselves tofunctionfromdeepstillnesswithin,aplacethatcantranscendthegripoftheego.
Ifwecouldsitrightnowandreachintothedepthofourheart,wewouldhaveour realizationinaflash.Yetthishappensforsofew.Therestofushavetoworkatit. DivinePresenceisgivingbirthtousmomentbymomenteternally.Thereisnevera secondinwhichGod’sPresenceandlovearenotavailabletous.Butrealizationis somethingwemustcontinuallyfocuson,andourone-pointeddevotiontofinding itwillbearfruitovertime.
TheSufipoetKabirsaidthatinthesearchforGod,itistheintensityofthelonging thatdoesallthework.Hethenadded,“Lookatmeandyouwillseeaslavetothat intensity.”ItisthispassionatedesiretoknowGodthatbringsustotheplaceof practiceeverydayandwhatfuelsthedeepeningofourpractice.Whatifwedon’tfeel thatlonging?Findit.Ifweonlyhaveafaintimpulse,thentheworkistogetinside, tuneintoit,andaskforthelongingtointensify.Rudioftensaid,“Withinahuman being,thewishisthemostpowerfulforceintheuniverse.”

God Dwells Within As YourSelf
DeepwithinusistheknowledgethattheDivineistheSourceofourlives.Spiritual workistodevelopandrefineourtuningmechanismsowecanresonateonthesame frequencyasthesubtleDivinitythatexpressesalllife.Thepsychicbodyandthe cakra systemfunctionasthismechanism,andtherearespecifictechniqueswecanuseto unfolditspotential.
Think of the richness we would experience if we were tuned into the effulgent expression of Spirit. But this experience isn’t “out there.” The place to start is here and now. This means tuning into a different dimension of life the part of us that remembers its Source. Otherwise, we spend our energy reinforcing a limited vision of what we think life is. When we do that, we are resonating with a slower, denser vibration. In a sense, a higher vibration is like a high-pitched frequency that requires us to develop a finely calibrated inner radio receiver.
Tuning into Divine Love means we are filled with it, and we function within the dimension of it. This doesn’t mean that life is suddenly filled with bliss and love. Outward circumstances might not change at all, but our perception of them is transformed. Even though we continue to experience difficulties and pain, we are grounded in a place within that is unaffected by the surface dimensions of life.
Most people get caught up in the dynamics of their life, and because they can’t see these higher dimensions, they don’t seek them. We have to redirect the energy we expend in reaction to external circumstances. By reorienting our attention inward, we change from the inside out. Meditation is tuning into our Source. This allows a lightness and deeper understanding to filter up through the denser levels within, so these qualities can become manifest in our awareness.

The Depth of Transformation
ThegoalofspiritualworkistoliveinapermanentstateofPresence,andsowemust becomeanewpersonifwewantthatrealization.Tobemadenewistoleaveevery pattern,contraction,andrationalebehind,andopentoanewplacewithin. Onlyinastateofinternalspaciousnessdowehavethecapacitytoreceiveandabsorb somethinghigher.Howdowechangeourpatternofsurfacethinkingandreachintoa placewithinthatcanrevealextraordinaryfreedomandprofoundjoy?Ifwehaven’t foundDivinePresencewherewe’vebeenlooking,weneedtolooksomewhereelse.
Inordertobecomeanew,realizedperson,theegomustbetranscended.Theego fundamentallybelievesitisseparatefromGodandseekstoprotectitsseparate existence.Thecommitmentwemustmakeistotuneintoadifferentfrequencyand resonance,theDivineLoveandstillnesswithin.Weneednotfocusonkillingtheego. ItismoreaccuratetosaythattheegowilldieorfallawayasDivinityemergesin ourlives.ToallowDivinePresencetoberevealed,wemustopentoreceiveit.This requiresthatwesacrificeourunwillingnesstoopenandletgoofourattachmentto suffering.
Many people are called to spiritual work, but very few choose it.
Surrenderisthefoundationrequiredto buildalifeestablishedinDivinePresence. Ifwearehonestwithourselves,every timewegettenseandcontract, every timewesuffer,itisbecausewedonot trusttheGodwithinus.Trustdoesn’t meangivingup.Whenwetrustand surrender,we’resaying,“Hallelujah,let mylifeexpressitselfinitsfullDivinity.” Thechallengeistobecomeanewperson wholivesfromadifferentplace—onein tunewithGod’sheart.
