W3 – CLINICAL WORKSHOP

Standing Strong: The Benefits of Verticalization

We are not made for long hours of sitting in a restrictive or constrained posture, nor are our children. Static sitting occurs when seating is rigid, with sustained mechanical tissue loading. Static sitting creates relaxed abdominal muscles and even atrophy over prolonged periods, which results in prolonged postural loading of the spine. Verticalization provides for extension of the upper trunk and proper alignment of the hip during standing which can help delay typical skeletal deformities often seen in static sitters. With normal growth and development, verticalization allows the head of the femur to be better seated in the acetabulum, which promotes healthy skeletal alignment, as well as proper development of the acetabular socket for children. With full standing, pressure is completely relieved off the ischial tuberosities (ITs) which can also reduce risk of pressure points as well as adaptive asymmetrical pelvic positioning.

Pelvis, Posture, and Prehension: Clinical Assessment and Positioning for Wheelchair Mobility

Various neurological and neuromuscular conditions impact postural control, movement, and grasp. To maximize occupational participation and mobility, clients with neurological and neuromuscular conditions often use wheelchairs. When independent mobility is valued, much effort is involved in determining if clients can self-propel or drive a wheelchair, often by trial-and-error process. Understanding how neurological and neuromuscular conditions affect clients’ posture, motor control, and grasp, informs and focuses clinical assessment. Then clinicians, in collaboration with clients and vendors, can enable product selection based on thorough clinical analysis, functional requirements, and overall fit.

WORKSHOP BLOCK D (75 MINUTES)

Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025 • 10:45 a.m. – Noon

W20 – EXHIBITOR WORKSHOP, ETAC

A Twist on Power Assist for the Manual Wheelchair

We understand that there is an extremely high prevalence of upper extremity overuse injury among individuals who use a manual wheelchair for their primary means of mobility. We also understand that in addition to the development of these injuries with use over time there can be some limitations for the manual wheelchair rider. These may include the type of terrain they may be able to traverse and the speed, distance or duration they may be to travel during their day. Additionally, there are certain activities or tasks they may not be able to do or do well due to having to use their upper extremities during the act of propulsion. While power assist technology has been around for some time, there has not been a system that is modular and capable of multiple modes of use during a given day. This partner workshop will demonstrate how adding modular power assist to Rogue2 and Cat5 can be a game changer for users’ independence in mobility. You’ll be astonished to discover what is meant by the phrase ‘modular power assist’.

The Drive for

Function

and

Development:

An Overview of Alternative Drive Control Considerations for Early Power Mobility

Assessing an end user for power mobility can be an intimidating task. Decisions that are made will have an impact on the individual’s quality of life, functional mobility, physical well-being, and social interactions. This task can seem even more daunting when it comes to the pediatric end user. Children have the natural desire to move, explore, and learn. Research has shown that there is a strong correlation between self-initiated mobility and the development of visual, cognitive, social, language, and perceptual skills. This course will discuss the characteristics and decision-making process for alternative drive control devices, as well as the special considerations on early power mobility intervention. Potential assessment and training tools for pediatric power mobility will also be explored.

Presented by: Markie Ryckman, Occupational Therapist, Enablement Therapy Services

W26 – EXHIBITOR WORKSHOP, AMYLIOR

Providing Comfort and Stability Through a Dynamic Seat Cushion

We will review how the new CG Air 2 and the patent-pending anti-slip cover ensures unmatched pelvic stability and a new method of air cell support to provide client stability while allowing for dynamic mobility and pressure management through immersion. This is critical to maintain pressure management at the same time as providing pain relief, function/stability and comfort. If a client is in pain, they will attempt to shift weight to relieve this pain. With weight shift comes the potential to change where peak pressure points are located, but also the potential for shearing, slouching, loss of postural control, asymmetry and decreased functionality. Additional stability and immersion lead to pain relief with supported dynamic shifting which can reduce the likelihood of clients “sliding out of their chairs” or needing to get out of their wheelchair due to severe pain.

Smart Wheelchairs Have Arrived – What's Next?

Smart wheelchairs enhance mobility, safety, and independence, but adoption remains limited due to cost, clinical, and ethical concerns. Unlike the SAE automation levels used in vehicles, a user-centric functional framework is needed. This presentation introduces three categories: Monitoring (e.g., backup cameras for situational awareness), Alerting (e.g., proximity sensors providing real-time feedback), and Intervening (e.g., collision avoidance and automated navigation). Attendees will experience these technologies firsthand and discuss their applications.

W28 – CLINICAL WORKSHOP

New Generation Dynamic Arm Support: Lab Trials for Use

The use of a new generation dynamic arm support prototype is documented under lab trials in pre-clinical technology transfer phase. Control on objects and joysticks by arms is often preferred rather than special interfaces. Mobile arm supports provide UE stability. Mounted on wheelchairs, adjustments are challenges. Mounted on tables, they help with feeding, writing, computer access and grooming but set up by an attendant is required. Mechanical force is usually provided against gravity to the forearm. Orthotics systems can fit all arm segments and provide support to shoulder and elbow joints dynamically and separately. Thoraco-brachial orthosis usually involves anchoring on trunk braces. Similarly, integration into the seating solution can be done. Techniques inspired by works on UE exoskeletons and orthotics were applied and the arm considered as a “multibody system” with joints mechanics and motions. New ways for low-cost, and optimal designs for 3D print production have been developed.

My Client Has a Wound. Now What?

Wheelchair users are at high risk of pressure injury. Once the wound occurs, achieving a full closure of the PI in the pelvic area is an indisputable achievement. But unfortunately, the tensile strength of the skin will never be as strong as it was before the wound. Individually prescribed skin protection cushions are an important clinical intervention for PI prevention, along with nutrient-rich diet, regular position changes, and moisture management. This session is for clinicians who would like to learn about the PI healing approaches as well as products, tools, and resources utilized. We will review clinical case studies involving wheelchair users who undergo treatments for deep tissue injuries.
