Jr. Vice Commander’s Corner: Ed Velazquez The United States Navy Douglas A-1H Skyraider (NE-572 BuNo 135297) "Paper Tiger ll" (which was a temporary name used for just this one flight) of attack Squadron VA-25 Fist of the Fleet being readied for a mission over the Mekong Delta in October 1965. VA-25 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing Two (CVW-2) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVA-41). To commemorate the mark of having delivered 6,000,000 lb. (2721.56 to) of ordnance NE-572 was equipped with a special "bomb", a toilet! The toilet was a damaged toilet, which was going to be thrown overboard. One of the plane captains of VA-25 saved it and the ordnance crew made a rack, tailfins and nose fuse for it. VA-25 personnel maintained a position to block the view of the Air Boss and the ship's Captain while the aircraft was taxiing forward to the catapult. The plane was piloted by X/O Cdr. Clarence W. Stoddard, wingman was LCdr. Robin Bacon (in NE-577, BuNo 139768, with Lt. Clint Johnson shot down a MiG17 on 20 June 1965). When the "sani-flush-bomb" was dropped, it almost hit LCdr. Beacon's plane due to its light weight. Cdr. Bill Stoddard (now C/O) was shot down and killed by SAMs over North Vietnam on 14 September 1966, flying with VA-25 from the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) Date: October 1965. Unknown source.

THOUSANDS OF SOLDIERS TO LEAVE EUROPE Ten thousand soldiers now stationed in Europe will be returned to the United States under re-alignment plans announced by the Defense Department. The realignment of the Europe-based 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team will begin later this year, including the transfer of some forces from Germany to Italy. The move are part of an ongoing strategy to reduce U.S. Army Europe from a force of 40,000 soldiers and one corps headquarters and four brigade combat teams to 30,00 soldiers and two brigade combat teams. Key actions announced Friday, March 1, by the Pentagon include the relocations of the 173rd ABCT's headquarters, and the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, from Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy to the newly refurbished Del Din facility, also in Vicenza. These cuts in Europe are not new and will continue into the year 2016 when the remaining four units will head back home. It's approximately 68 years since the end of WWII; it appears that Europe can finally stand on its own. Army Times. March 1, 2013

Chaplains Corner: Ron Allen He came into my study, made a note of the messiness, and looked at my desk. The open Bible was laying there, "I see you've got the Book," he said. "You'll not come to harm as long as you have that there." There are things which can wreck a life. But no one will find it easy to wreck our lives, as long as we have "the Book". And so long as we have beside us, and within us, the one of whom the Book tells. Ed Brenner, is now living at the VA Independence Center. His address is; CLC - Rm 116A 5201 Raymond St Orlando, FL. 32803 He would like a visit if you are down that way.
