Elmar Trenkwalders monumentale Keramikskulpturen erinnern in ihrer Struktur ebenso sehr an prunkvolle Barock- und Rokokoarchitekturen wie an indische Tempel oder spätgotische Ornamente. Die von Details überbordenden Gebilde sind jedoch keine sakralen „Heiligenschreine“, sondern utopische Bilder – Kosmen, deren Gestalten aus einer Welt der Fantasie, des Unterbewusstseins und der Träume entstammen könnten. Die architektonischen Gebilde verschmelzen mit biomorphen Formen aus der Natur, in denen vegetabile Wucherungen und menschliche Körperfragmente vorkommen.

The structure of Elmar Trenkwalder’s monumental ceramic sculptures recalls ostentatious baroque and rococo buildings just as much as Indian temples or late-gothic ornaments. However, even though they overflow with details, these objects are not sacred “holy shrines”, but utopian pictorial universes whose forms could be derived from a world of fantasy, subconsciousness and dreams. The architectural figures merge with biomorphic forms taken from the natural world which feature proliferating vegetation and fragments of the human body. Alongside numerous views of the exhibition in Kunstraum Dornbirn the catalog also features earlier works and selected exhibitions from 2012 to 2018 as well as drawings by the artist.
