The beloved treat from our childhood summers

HOW IT BEGAN…

The Popsicle was invented by 11-year-old Frank Epperson of San Francisco in 1905.

Frank stirred a package of soda mix into a glass of water with a stick and accidentally left it outside overnight.

By morning it was frozen solid. When he ran the glass under water, he was able to remove the ice pop using the wooden stick.

He called the icy treat the “Eppsicle.”

Frank shared them with his friends and family, and began selling them in his neighborhood. In later years he expanded and sold them at a California amusement park.

Remembering Woodstock

T

his August marks the 55th Anniversary of Woodstock, the legendary 3-day music festival that took place on a dairy farm near Bethel, New York. Nearly half a million people attended, wildly exceeding all expectations.

Despite, or because of, all the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll – and rain – Woodstock was a peaceful celebration that earned its spot in American pop culture history.

Woodstock was sponsored by four men – John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld and Michael Lang – and ultimately cost more than $2.4 million. The oldest of the four was 26.

••• Heir to a drugstore and toothpaste manufacturing fortune, John Roberts paid for the event using a multimillion-dollar trust fund and a lieutenant’s commission in the Army.

The only concert he had ever seen was The Beach Boys.

The festival took six months of preparation. An estimated $50,000 was reportedly paid to rent 600 acres of Max Yasgur’s farm. Woodstock Ventures spent a total of $180,000 on artist fees.

••• About 186,000 tickets were sold before the weekend.

Organizers believed no more than 200,000 attendees would actually show up. They failed to set up the necessary ticket booths and the fence was so shoddy that it was torn down by the crowds on the first day.

Some 400,000 to 500,000 people attended.

One-time Indian River County resident Arlo Guthrie told the Woodstock crowd, “The New York State Thruway is closed, man,” but his claim wasn’t exactly true. The Newburgh and Harriman exits were closed off to prevent even more people from going to the concert, but the actual thruway remained open. The traffic jam extended over 17 miles and cars were delayed from New York to White Lake for over eight hours.

After leaving their cars due to the conditions, festival-goers walked an average of 15 miles to reach the site.

••• Richie Havens helped solve a Woodstock problem when he played earlier than scheduled because the opening acts were stuck in traffic. He premiered a song called “Freedom,” which is now one of the most standout songs from the festival.

••• Jimi Hendrix’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” has been often called “The single greatest moment of the Sixties,” even though it was only witnessed by a fraction of the crowd. Most attendees had gone home by the time he took the stage Monday morning.

••• British musician Joe Cocker played a most beautiful rendition of The Beatles’ song “With A Little Help From My Friends.”

There were 32 bands that performed, including Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Still, Nash & Young, Santana, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Who, Ravi Shankar, John Sebastian, The Band, Canned Heat, and Johnny Winter.

••• The Beatles turned down the invite after John Lennon said he couldn’t get them all together. He did offer to play with his Plastic Ono Band, but the promoters turned him down.

Other declined invitations came back from Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Bob Dylan, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, The Byrds, and Roy Rogers.

••• Only three female artists played solo at Woodstock: Janis Joplin, Joan Baez and Melanie. Joni Mitchell was slated to appear, but was convinced by her manager that it was a better career move to appear on Monday’s The Dick Cavett Show rather than “sit around in a field with 500 people.” She has since admitted it was one of the biggest regrets of her life.

••• Unrecognized by Woodstock officials, Melanie wasn’t even issued a performer’s pass.

Before she was allowed on stage, she had to show her driver’s license and sing “Beautiful People” as proof of identity.

••• No incidents of violence occurred at the Woodstock Festival.

Most of the 80 arrests at Woodstock were made on drug charges involving LSD, amphetamines and heroin. Marijuana smokers, estimated to be the majority of the audience, were not arrested at Woodstock.

••• They ran out of food on the first day.

••• When residents of Sullivan County heard about the food shortages, they rallied with the local sheriff’s office to donate 10,000 sandwiches, water bottles, fruit and canned goods.

1,300 pounds of food was brought in by helicopter. Over 500,000 hamburgers and hot dogs were consumed on the first day of the festival, at a cost of $1 each.

••• The women’s group of the Jewish Community Centre of Monticello prepared 30,000 sandwiches that were handed out by the Sisters of the Convent of St. Thomas.

Members of the New Mexico commune “the Hog Farm” were hired by the organizers to set up camp and act as the “Please Force.” Their leader, Wavy Gravy, walked around dressed as Smokey the Bear and threatened any troublemakers with pies in the face or being doused in fizzy water. They also helped with the food shortage by making tons of brown rice and granola and handing it out for free.

••• You can’t go to a concert these days without running into tables of merchandise featuring T-shirts, sweatshirts, flags – anything you can fit a logo on. At Woodstock there was no official merchandise to be found. The few souvenirs that people were able to take home with them from the show were programs and bootleg items that were sold by attendees.

••• Of the hundreds of thousands present, there were three deaths: two from drug overdose and one especially tragic case of a 17-year-old in a mud-covered sleeping bag who was run over by a tractor that was collecting debris.

“If

” you didn’t see the movie IF in the theater at the start of summer break, it would be a great end-ofsummer movie to stream for the kids. But don’t be mistaken, adults will love it, too.

As a matter of fact, one reviewer stated that if your kids don’t enjoy it now, “it will have a completely different meaning to them in 10, 20, or 30 years. As an adult, you’ll almost definitely enjoy it.”

Maybe that’s because we all have our inner child pestering us in adulthood.

IF stands for “Imaginary Friends.”

Most of us had at least one as a kid, right?

But did you forget them or push them out of your life as you became older?

IF is a live-action fantasy with animation. It’s about 12-year-old Bea (Cailey Fleming), whose father (John Krasinski, who wrote, produced, and directed the film, as well as played the voice of Marshmallow) is about to have heart surgery in the same hospital where her mother died a few years earlier. At age 12, Bea feels she is mature enough to handle the situation without her father’s comical antics to help her to feel better, which are actually heartwarming. They go to New York City where her father will have his surgery and Bea can stay with her grandmother while he’s in the hospital.

On the way to the store, Bea meets a neighbor, Cal (Ryan Reynolds), who is trying to help imaginary friends find new owners. What ensues is a lively and colorful adventure as Bea joins

Cal in matching IFs to new children.

Cal takes Bea to the Memory Lane Retirement Home for lost IFs where she meets Lewis (voice of Louis Gossett, Jr.), an elderly teddy bear IF who runs the facility on Coney Island. Lewis encourages Bea that some IFs don’t need new friends but need to be reunited with old ones (or maybe it’s the other way around). To practice, she helps her grandmother find her IF, a butterfly named Blossom (voice of Pheobe Waller-Bridge), using music to stir her heart.

She then helps a man, Jeremy (Bobby Moynihan), find his IF, a large purple creature named Blue (voice of Steve Carell) by bringing in a smell from his childhood to help him remember.

Bea realizes no matter how old she is, she still needs her IFs, especially during difficult times.

After a scary report from the hospital, Bea visits her father, along with all her IFs, leading to a touching encounter between Bea and her dad.

As the film nears its end, many scenes are brilliantly tied together.

By the way, additional voices of IFs are star packed, including George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon, Christopher Meloni, Maya Rudolph, Jon Stewart and many others, plus several comedians. Brad Pitt is credited as Keith, even though his character is invisible and has no words (symbolizing his appearance as Vanisher in Deadpool 2).

What a sweet film! We watched it with our grandkids, and they loved it.

If this one starts out a little slow for you, stick with it, it makes more sense as it goes along. I enjoyed it more the second time, and it’s one I would watch over and over. You’ll catch things you missed the first time, and it will make the film even more meaningful.

You may want to purchase it. After all, we mustn’t let our sense of imagination get away from us, no matter how old we are!

Summer Favorites NANA’S POOR MAN’S CAKE My grandmother made this cake frequently. The aroma coming from the oven brings back fond memories that still make me smile. It’s a moist spicy raisin cake, easy to make, and uses only one saucepan. It’s also known as a Depression Cake and was popular in the 1930’s because it does not use eggs or milk, items harder to come by or expensive at that time.

INGREDIENTS 12-ounce or 15-ounce box of raisins (about 2 cups) 2 and 1/2 cups water, divided 1/2 cup Crisco shortening 2 cups granulated sugar 1 and 1/2 teaspoon each: salt, cloves, cinnamon 3 cups flour, divided (2 cups/1cup) 1 and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking pan (I use PAM baking spray.)

2. In a medium to large saucepan combine the raisins and 2 cups water. Bring to a boil and simmer gently for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in Crisco until it melts. Cool thoroughly.

3. Add the sugar and salt, cloves, cinnamon. Stir in 2 cups flour, then add 1/2 cup water, then the remaining 1 cup flour.

4. Sprinkle on baking soda and stir in completely. Don’t overmix.

5. Pour into prepared pan and bake about 25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.

6. Leave cake in the baking pan to cool. Wrap with Saran and foil, or store in an airtight container.

Note: My grandmother baked in the mornings and used leftover coffee for cooking the raisins. She used a glass instead of measuring cup which made it tricky to get a precise recipe from her, and I don’t think she used the same amounts each time either, yet her cakes always turned out. And she used Crisco which was very popular back then; the blue-labeled can of Crisco was always in our kitchen when I was growing up.

Crisco came out in 1911 as an alternative to lard, touting “It’s all vegetable! It’s digestible!” It eventually fell out of favor because of the artery-clogging hydrogenated oils. They did change their recipe, cutting the amount of transfats in one serving to less than .5 grams, allowing them to claim it contains zero transfats.

The name “Crisco” comes from the phrase “crystallized cottonseed oil.” I just feel better using butter. This recipe is the only time I use Crisco. Substituting butter just doesn’t work.

MY MOM’S BAKED BEANS These are Rhett’s favorite baked beans.

He likes them for breakfast, English style, with scrambled eggs, a slice of summer tomato, and toast covered with butter and raspberry jam.

INGREDIENTS 3 tablespoons butter 1 medium/large onion, chopped 32-oz can Bush’s Original Baked Beans 1/4 cup Heinz ketchup 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard Dash ground cayenne, to taste Bacon strips, optional

DIRECTIONS 1. Sauté onion in butter until translucent, approximately 20 minutes. Add remaining ingredients; cover and cook over low heat for 15 minutes.

2. Can be topped with bacon strips and baked in a 350-degree oven for 20-30 minutes, until bubbly.

A refreshing summertime treat!

WATERMELON SALAD INGREDIENTS:

There’s no set measurements – use how much or how little you like.

Seedless watermelon, cut into one-inch cubes, chilled Red onion, thinly sliced Crumbled Greek feta cheese Balsamic glaze (not vinegar) Chiffonade of fresh basil leaves

ASSEMBLE: • Arrange the watermelon cubes and onion slices onto salad plates.

Sprinkle on the feta cheese, drizzle with the balsamic glaze. Garnish with ribbons of basil.

Notes: Red onions add color to salads but can also add an unwanted strong bite. The sulphur compounds causing this bite can be minimized by placing onion slices in ice water for 20 minutes.

You can make your own balsamic glaze by combining 1 cup balsamic vinegar and 2 tablespoons brown sugar in a saucepan over high heat; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, stir, and simmer until reduced by half, about 10 minutes. Should be syrupy and coat the back of your spoon.

Chiffonade is a cutting technique and produces more attractive cut herbs. Stack basil leaves, largest one on the bottom, roll length-wise into a little cigar, and cut thin slices cross-wise, producing the confetti-like strands of basil.

SERVE OR DESERVE

I

love words. I play with them. I think about their meaning. I break them apart and try to figure out how they came to be. Sometimes I recognize that the original meaning has been lost in the common usage of a word so I look for another choice to better describe what I’m trying to convey.

Folks that know me watch me sidestep one certain word regularly. The word is DESERVE. I’m not a fan. When I take it apart, the prefix DE means “away from” or “separation from.” Now, you see it, right? When I worry about what I deserve, I move away from service; I become entitled and not a part of the whole. I separate myself from my fellows in a way that may hurt me or them.

Long ago, when this word was formed, it spoke of the difference between slaves and their masters. It reeked of division and judgment, suggesting that one person was superior to another.

Devotion to service is a high spiritual state often tied to agape love. It is common in families with a devoted parent attending to a child who is unable to exercise selfcare. It shows up in other places, especially when there is desperation or great need.

Service is love in action. It has been called the hands and feet of God on earth.

Whether or not we serve others shows up in the way we live and what we attain.

For the service-minded, it doesn’t matter what we “deserve;” it matters only what we can achieve together. Can we make this world better?

When I’m in a grove and I want that beautiful grapefruit high on the branches, I might need a stepstool or a tall friend to help me reach my goal. This is a simple example of how connection will allow me to achieve my highest good. Connection will help me get the sweetest fruit, but I might have to ask for help. I might have to allow someone to serve me. That’s the hardest part for some of us. Our pride tells us that we should be able to achieve our goals without help, or our false pride screams that we are not worthy to ask for assistance. Either way, pride keeps us separated and apart, worrying about what we deserve. uit settling for the low-hanging fruit. Reach higher. Ask for help if you need it. And while you’re up there, grab an extra grapefruit for someone else. That will be the juiciest part of your day, I guarantee it.

As we put our trust in the Lord, we can have hope.

Never give up. We live in troubling and trying times, but we can be assured that God is still in control.

Do not fear. Put your faith is a living God. There is hope.
