Don’t Let IRMAA Catch You Off Guard:
WHAT HIGH-INCOME RETIREES NEED TO KNOW
by Danny Howes, EA, RFC
If you’re approaching or already enjoying retirement, one hidden cost that might surprise you is IRMAA—the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. Simply put, IRMAA is an additional charge tacked onto your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums if your income crosses certain thresholds.
Many retirees are shocked when they find their Medicare costs significantly higher than expected, all because of income that could have been strategically managed.
In our tax practice this last season, we had quite a few people surprised to find that they had triggered IRMAA for the first time. Why? Simple really. Interest rates have gone up. They have gone up substantially from the first time the Fed increased rates in March of 2022. Believe it or not, because rates were so low before increases began, the Fed Funds rate had increased by over 2,100% by the time it peaked in July of 2023!! Before rates went up, it was not uncommon to see savings of $300k earn $3-4k per year. Now that same amount of money is earning $12-15k per year. In addition, if you are of the age required to take minimum distributions from your retirement accounts, those distributions can substantially increase your exposure to IRMAA.
What is IRMAA?
IRMAA is a Medicare surcharge applied to high-income earners. It affects:
• Medicare Part B (doctor visits, outpatient care)
• Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)
It’s based on your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) from two years prior. So, your 2025 Medicare premiums are determined by your 2023 tax return.
Who Does IRMAA Affect?
*For 2025, IRMAA applies to individuals with MAGI (Modified Adjusted Gross Income) above $106,000 and married couples filing jointly above $212,000 (based on 2023 MAGI). The higher your income, the higher your Medicare premiums can climb, sometimes by hundreds of dollars per month.
How is IRMAA Calculated?
The Social Security Administration reviews your IRS tax return from two years prior. They then place you into one of several income brackets. Each bracket adds a specific monthly surcharge to your standard Medicare premiums.
How to Plan Around IRMAA
Avoiding IRMAA isn’t always possible, but with smart planning, you can reduce the impact:
1. Manage Your MAGI
Use tax-efficient income strategies like Roth IRA conversions (timed properly), qualified charitable distributions (QCDs), and tapping non-retirement accounts first.
2. Consider a Roth Conversion Window
The years between retirement and age 73 (when RMDs begin) can be ideal for converting traditional IRA funds to Roth— potentially lowering future MAGI by having reduced RMDs..
3. Delay Social Security Strategically
Delaying Social Security could help you stay below IRMAA thresholds, especially in early retirement years.
4. Watch Out for One-Time Income Events
Capital gains from a home sale, IRA withdrawals, or severance can trigger IRMAA. Timing matters.
5. Consider Tax Deferral Strategies
If they fit within your overall financial plan. This can shelter savings that are earning interest from being taxed until you actually use the money. This reduces your MAGI in those years you defer.
Common IRMAA Mistakes to Avoid
• Assuming it doesn’t apply to you
• Forgetting about one-time income events
• Ignoring Roth conversion timing
• Underutilizing tax planning in early retirement
• Missing appeals opportunities for life changes
Appealing IRMAA Surcharges
If you’ve experienced a life-changing event—like retirement, divorce, or loss of income—you may be eligible to appeal your IRMAA charges using SSA Form SSA-44.
Common qualifying events:
• Retirement
• Death of a spouse
• Work stoppage or reduction
• Divorce or annulment
Always review your IRMAA determination letter, and don’t hesitate to appeal if something doesn’t look right.
FAQ: IRMAA and Retirement Planning
Q: Can Roth IRA withdrawals trigger IRMAA?
A: No. Roth withdrawals (qualified distributions) are not included in MAGI, making them a valuable tool for managing Medicare costs.
Q: Is IRMAA permanent?
A: No. It is reassessed annually based on your income two years prior. If your income drops, IRMAA may no longer apply.
Q: Do Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) count toward IRMAA?
A: Yes. RMDs from traditional IRAs and 401(k)s are included in your MAGI.
Q: Should I be concerned about IRMAA even if I'm not "rich"?
A: Yes. Many middle-income retirees can unintentionally trigger IRMAA due to poor tax planning or large one-time income events.

The Conclave
RATED PG
AVAILABLE ON AMAZON PRIME, APPLE TV, GOOGLE PLAY, FANDANGO AT HOME
Historic! As we all know, the world experienced a monumental moment when the Catholic Church appointed the first American Pope on May 8, 2025.
For the first time, and the 266th successor of St. Peter, the Pope, who would rule over 1.4 billion Catholics, was born and raised in the great ole USA! But how was Cardinal Robert Franci Prevost elected?
What happened behind the ancient doors of the Sistine Chapel?
The movie The Conclave gives a sneak peek at what transpired before the vote was cast behind the sacred walls.
The movie opens with the words, “The Pope is dead. The throne is vacant.”
David Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), the Dean of the College of Cardinals, was elected as the head of the Conclave to elect the next Pope. Although he knows the uncertainty and stress it will carry, he cannot back down. The job is his and his alone.
Breathless suspense follows scene after scene as the Conclave begins. Just as the 120 cardinals arrive and doors are locked, the first bombshell is released. They discover one more cardinal. Who is he, and who invited him? After many questions, they discover that the Holy Father invited him – Cardinal Vincent Benitez (Carlos Diehz), from Kabul.
Accusations begin swirling about each of the cardinals, who seemed to be their favorites. Cardinal Lawrence succumbs to the only thing he can do. He breaks the holy seal on the door of the Holy Father’s room.
The suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat as Sister Agnes (Isabella Rossellini), discovers the broken seal on the deceased Pope’s apartment door. Will she quietly sneak in to see who was there? And what will Cardinal Lawrence discover? Could he find hidden secrets that could rock the Catholic Church forever?
Although my husband and I continued
to predict the outcome with the many twists and turns, everything remained a mystery. Then, after five successive rounds of voting on paper ballots, the white smoke emanates from the Sistine Chapel chimney as thousands await the outcome in St. Peter’s Square.
Interestingly, the director never showed the crowd outside. We only hear the cheers, so the focus remained on what transpired behind closed doors.
So, who was the new Pope? Was it Emeritus Tedesco who wanted to turn back the hands of time and return to the Latin mass from years ago? Or was it Cardinal Lawrence who finally searched his heart and even chose the name if he were to be nominated? Or was it Cardinal Adami from Nigeria, or maybe our surprise visitor, Cardinal Benitez from Kabul?
Sorry, I will not be a spoiler. It’s a movie with an unbelievable ending that will keep you wondering what just happened, even as the credits begin to scroll.
But I challenge you to pop on Prime or wherever you can find The Conclave and watch this exhilarating movie before it’s gone!
SURPRISING TIDBITS
• According to a Politico article, some of the Cardinals who participated in the Papal Conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV had watched this film, hoping to understand how the real thing would play out.
• The Pope’s brother asked Pope Leo XIV if he had watched the movie The Conclave so he would know how to act once his name was called to be Pope.
• The Conclave was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Actor by Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini.

Happy Father’s Day!
Celebrate with a Shiraz ...
Australian for Syrah
Father’s Day has always been special for me because I have such a great Dad. He has always been there for me. I always try to give him something that is from my heart to show how much I appreciate what he’s done for me.
I discovered these wines years ago when I was looking for a match for my grilled lamb chops with Dijon brown sugar glaze for my Father’s Day meal. (The secret ingredients are ginger and orange zest.) I know he’ll love them.
These wines are big and bold and are perfect with grilled lamb, spicy barbecue, and rich pastas.
One of my favorites is Mollydooker, which is Aussie for left-handed. (The owners chose the name because both Sparky and Sarah Marquis are left-handed.) One of their featured wines is called The Carnival of Love Shiraz, 2021, ranked #3 in Top 25 McLaren Vale Australia Shiraz wines.
This wine is dark violet with a deep crimson hue and bursts with black cherry fruit, dark plum, licorice, and fragrant spice. I find this wine is refined with a display of creamy mocha oak on the palate and hints of black pepper followed by a refreshing balance of mint. The tannins are soft and the taste seems to go on forever.
If you are looking for a wine outside of the norm, do not hesitate to try the marvelous Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Australia. In my view, this is a winery to keep your eyes on. I believe we’ll be seeing more outstanding vintages in the future.
Happy Father’s Day! – Glenn

DELICIOUS RECIPES FOR THE World’s Best Dad!
MARRY ME CHICKEN
I’m not sure I like the name, but I LOVE this chicken! We had it at a friend’s house and we both went back for seconds. It’s fuss-free and company-worthy.
Ingredients
• 1.5 pounds chicken breasts, about 4, skinless and boneless *
• Salt & pepper
• 6 tablespoons flour
• 1-2 tablespoons olive oil
• 3 cloves garlic, crushed
• 1 cup sun-dried tomatoes, drained
• 1 teaspoon dried oregano
• 2 teaspoons paprika
• 3/4 cup heavy cream **
• 3/4 cup chicken broth
• 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, freshly grated
• 3 tablespoons fresh basil leaves
• Juice from 1/2 fresh lemon
Instructions
1. Wash and pat dry the chicken. Salt and pepper the chicken on both sides, then dredge in flour.
2. In a large deep frying pan, heat the oil over a medium heat. When it’s hot, carefully add the chicken. Cook for 5 minutes; flip and cook for another 5 minutes. Chicken should be golden brown.
3. Remove the chicken from the pan and turn the heat down to low. Add the garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, oregano and paprika. Stir for 3-5 minutes until the garlic is softened.
4. Add the cream, broth, parmesan and mix well. Taste and season with salt and pepper.
5. Place the chicken back in the sauce. Put the lid on the pan and cook for 5 minutes. Turn the chicken and cook for another 5 minutes.
6. Make sure the chicken is cooked through.
7. Remove the pan from the heat, squeeze on the lemon juice and garnish with roughly chopped basil leaves.
* You can use thighs instead of breasts.
** Don’t use half and half … you need the heavy cream to thicken the sauce.
BOULANGÈRE POTATOES
This fancy-sounding French side dish is light and flavorful, and elevates any meal. They’re easy to make, but you’ll definitely need a mandolin to slice the potatoes and onions. If serving with the Marry Me Chicken, get these in the oven before starting the chicken. Cooking time is about an hour. Serves 4
Ingredients
• 2.2 pounds waxy potatoes, like Yukon Gold, peeled and very thinly sliced
• 2 medium onions, peeled and very thinly sliced
• 1 cup chicken or vegetable stock
• 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 4 tablespoons butter
• Salt and pepper
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Generously butter an oven-proof dish.
2. Spread a thin layer of onions in the bottom of the dish, then cover with potatoes, some garlic, a sprinkling of fresh thyme, salt and pepper, and several small pieces of butter.
3. Continue layering until the dish is full, making sure you end with a potato layer.
4. Heat the stock in a saucepan; place the dish on a baking sheet.
5. Carefully pour the warm stock into the dish, making sure it reaches just below the top layer of potatoes. Add the final pieces of butter and more salt and pepper.
6. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and cook for a further 30 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and crispy. Adapted from Mary Berry’s recipe
PEANUT BUTTER BANANA CREAM PIE
When I eat a banana, I put a dab of peanut butter on each bite. They just go together so well. This recipe adds chocolate to that flavor combo ... what’s not to love, right? It’s made with a Nutter Butter cookie crumb crust, then layers of chocolate ganache, bananas, a creamy peanut butter mousse, and topped with fluffy whipped cream.
Ingredients
For the crust:
• 20 Nutter Butter cookies (2 and 1/2 cups crumbs) *
• 6 ounces full-fat brick cream cheese, softened to room temperature
• 1 cup creamy peanut butter (processed, not natural)
• 2/3 cup powdered sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 4 bananas
For the topping:
• 1 cup cold heavy cream
• 2 Tablespoons powdered sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For garnish:
• Nutter Butter cookie(s) and/or
• Hershey’s milk chocolate bar
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°.
2. Make the crust. In a food processor or blender, pulse the whole cookies (cookie AND filling) into a fine crumb. Stir the cookie crumbs and melted butter together and pour into an ungreased 9-inch pie dish Use your hand to pat the crumbs down into the bottom and up the sides to make a compact crust, until the mixture is no longer crumbly. (Don’t pack down with heavy force because it will make the crust too hard.) Bake for 15 minutes. Allow to cool.
Make the ganache. Place finely chopped chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl. Heat the cream in a small saucepan over medium heat until it begins to gently simmer. (A rapid boil is too hot!) Pour over the chocolate and let it sit for 2–3 minutes to soften the chocolate. Slowly stir until chocolate
has completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
4. Make the filling. Using a mixer fitted with whisk attachment, beat the cold heavy cream on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form, 3–5 minutes. Spoon the whipped cream into a bowl and set aside. Using the same bowl, beat the cream cheese, peanut butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract together on medium-high speed until combined. Mixture will be thick. Fold in the whipped cream until smooth. Be gentle, you don’t want to deflate the whipped cream.
5. Assemble. Spread the chocolate ganache over the cooled crust. Slice 2 bananas and place the slices in a single layer over the ganache. (The other 2 bananas are for topping the pie.) Spread peanut butter filling evenly on top. The banana slices will move around a little bit, but take your time and spread it on as well as you can.
6. Cover the pie and chill in the refrigerator for 5–6 hours, up to 1 day.
7. Make the whipped cream: Using a hand or a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar and vanilla on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form, 4–5 minutes.
8. Slice remaining 2 bananas and arrange on top of the chilled pie. Top with the whipped cream.
9. If making chocolate curls, run a vegetable peeler down the long side of a Hershey’s milk chocolate bar. Cover the top of the whipped cream with the curls along with a Nutter Butter cookie, if desired.
10. Serve cold. Store leftover pie covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
* Publix carries Nutter Butter cookies.
** The finer you chopped the chocolate, the quicker it will melt with the cream.

for Buying a New PC in 2025 TIPS
s it finally time to say goodbye to your once trusty old computer?
Buying a new PC can be overwhelming, especially if you haven’t purchased a new computer in a while and haven’t kept up with the latest and greatest technology. Like me. I speak here from my own experience and will share what I learned. Keep in mind I am resistant to learn new technology and have entered this new world kicking and screaming and holding on dearly to my Windows 8 the whole way.
It’s not a bad idea to start looking online at the available options so you’ll have some idea what questions to even ask when you walk into the store. It’s been my experience that the store staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and patient, in explaining different features and capabilities.
1.What Are Your Needs
Before you start shopping, it’s important to identify what your particular needs are so you can determine which specifications to look for. This is where the knowledgeable sales person comes in to guide you and make suggestions. Are you using it for everyday tasks, checking emails, keeping track of your finances? Are you a student, a content creator, a gamer? Your purpose will determine which components to look for.
2.What’s Your Budget
Determine how much you want to spend. PCs range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars depending on features and performance. Your budget will narrow down your options. It’s also smart to keep in mind you might consider spending a little more now instead of needing to upgrade too soon. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way and was fortunate that I was able to upgrade as often as I did.
3.Do You Want a Laptop or Desktop
This is a fairly easy one. Desktops offer better performance for the money and are easier to upgrade, but they’re not portable and you need a dedicated space in your home or office for it. If portability is important, then a laptop is the way to go.
4.Key Specifications
This is a good explanation of the different computer components. These are the spec options you’ll see when you shop. Important: Ask questions so you understand the differences and at least have a general understanding of what each component does.
• Processor (CPU): Look for Intel Core i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen 5/7 for most users. Higher-end CPUs like the i9 or Ryzen 9 are better for intensive tasks.
• Memory (RAM): 16GB of RAM is a good baseline for most users. Gamers and creators might want 32GB or more.
• Storage: SSDs are significantly faster than HDDs. Aim for at least a 512GB SSD; larger if you deal with large files.
• Graphics Card (GPU): For gaming or creative work, a dedicated GPU like NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series or AMD Radeon RX 7000 series is essential.
• Display (for laptops or all-in-ones): Look for at least a Full HD (1920x1080) resolution. Higher refresh rates (120Hz or more) are good for gaming.
6.Visit Several Stores
I found that different stores sell different computer brands and different specifications. You get the benefit of talking to other knowledgeable people who may give you new information and suggestions to put in your database.
7.Consider Build Quality and Warranty
If buying a laptop or prebuilt desktop, check the build quality, especially the keyboard, hinge, and chassis. Does the manufacturer offer a good warranty and reliable customer service? Where will you go if you have issues?
8.Ports and Connectivity
Make sure the PC has all the ports you need — USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, and an SD card slot if necessary. Also, check for Wi-Fi 6/6E and Bluetooth 5.0 or higher for better wireless performance.
9. Read Reviews
Once you’ve narrowed down your options, go online and look at the reviews and user feedback. There’s no shortage of opinions and they’re very helpful. I look at reviews for many items I buy, especially the larger ticket items.
Buying a new PC is a significant investment and taking the time to research and understand your options are key. Happy shopping!

A. L. S
BY BETH WALSH STEWART
When I heard the diagnosis, I was flattened. My emotions wouldn’t kick in because my heart wouldn’t allow the truth. I couldn’t get angry. I couldn’t cry. I couldn’t beg God. I took the news in, but I struggled with processing it.
A.L.S. Lou Gehrig’s disease. In denial, I asked things like how and why. But I knew that neither answer would disentangle my heartstrings. My mind was willing, but my heart was paralyzed in fear. I bargained. I rationalized. I knew there had been some injuries from falls, but I thought they were the product of natural aging. I wanted them to be the product of natural aging.
She is my sister, my closest sibling, the one with whom I shared a bedroom from kindergarten to high school. She was my constant – older, wiser in the ways of the world, and able to teach me how to navigate puberty, boys, and how to dress to look cool. She was there when I was born. She has always been there since I was born, even when we were separated by miles. How could this be happening?
When she made the decision to move into an assisted living facility, I was horrified. Surely, it hadn’t come to this. She was adamant. Seemingly without distress, she let go of the beautiful home for which she worked her tail off. She downsized. She lightened the physical load of her life, offering Christmas decorations and china, furniture and yard tools to any in need.
I was tentative about my first visit to her new home. What should I call it? Was it a nursing home, a senior living center, a home healthcare facility? She was too young for any of those. Still, I found out that she was now in a motorized wheelchair, though I hadn’t seen that latest progression in person. My Uber pulled up in front of the building, and I pushed a button to make the glass doors open. Then, I took the elevator to her floor.

My sister was a bright light in this opaque place. She was younger than most of them by at least twenty years, and her joy of living was like an effervescent water that brought them all to life. If anyone was seated alone, she wheeled up and asked if they wanted to join us. If they said no, she promised there would be a next time. She’d make sure of it. The whole weekend was full of interactions like this. Each person she approached was made to feel significant by her honest interest in how they were doing.

She wants to reward the committed staff and let them know that she appreciates their hard work bringing comfort and surety to her new friends. She wants to make a difference.

Father’s Day is a time to celebrate and honor the men who carry the sacred role of fatherhood. But beyond the cards, gifts, and gatherings lies a divine calling that originates from God Himself. As Ephesians 3:14–15 (AMP) reminds us, “every family in heaven and on earth is named [that Father from Whom all fatherhood takes its title and derives its name].” All true fatherhood is modeled after God; every father is called to reflect His character to their families. Unfortunately, that image is sometimes broken or distorted due to human flaws. Yet God’s Word provides a blueprint for restoring and walking in the purpose He designed for fathers. In 1 Corinthians 11:3, Paul outlines a divine order: “The head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” In this chain of authority, I believe the father is called to represent Christ in the home in three different expressions: a priest, a prophet, and a king.
The Father as Priest
The priestly role involves intercession and spiritual covering. In Exodus 12, we see how each father in Israel was commanded to apply the lamb’s blood to the doorposts of his home to protect his family from judgment. It was a father’s duty to ensure his household was covered. Likewise, in Mark 9, we read of a father pleading with Jesus to heal his demon-possessed son. He cried out, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” Fathers must be willing to intercede and stand in the gap spiritually, even when their faith is being tested.
The Father as Prophet
As prophets, fathers are called to represent God to their families, guiding them in truth. Ephesians 6:4 instructs fathers to “bring [your children] up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” It is not just a mother’s job to teach children about God, but it’s a father’s God-given responsibility. Hebrews 11:7 tells us that Noah, by faith, prepared an ark to save his family. Fathers must speak life, set a godly example, and lead their households in righteousness.
The Father as King
A king governs with wisdom, integrity, and justice. Paul teaches in 1 Timothy 3 that a man must manage his household well, because leadership in the home reflects one’s ability to lead in the church. Genesis 18:19 shows us that Abraham was chosen by God because he would command his children to keep the way of the Lord. Fathers who rule under God’s authority will bless not only their homes but also generations to come.
This Father’s Day, let us honor not only the men who have raised us but also the divine calling they carry. May every father rise to be a priest, prophet, and king in his home and lead with love, standing in faith, and walking in the ways of the Lord.

Our Father
In Matthew 6:9-13
Jesus teaches us how to pray. When we have a relationship with God, the Father, we can address Him as “Our Father.” It is a personal and loving relationship.
Maybe your relationship with your earthly father wasn’t the best. But there is a God in heaven that loves you. He understands you and cares about you.
This Father’s Day receive Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. He has put us in right standing with God (John 3:16). You can call God, Who is in Heaven, your Father.
Blessings,
Pastor Rich Ienuso
